In embedding systems, protein–polysaccharide complexes can be utilized as wall materials to improve the bioavailability and activity of bioactive substances during delivery. This study used the antisolvent precipitation method to manufacture gliadin from highland barley distillers’ grains (HBDGG)–chitosan (Cs) nanoparticles. Using a variety of characterization techniques, the microstructure and interaction mechanism of HBDGG-Cs nanoparticles were examined, and their stability was assessed. In comparison to HBDGG, the results indicated that the addition of Cs enhanced the intensity of UV absorption and reduced the intensity of fluorescence. The content of α-helix dropped, while β-sheet, β-turn, and irregularly coiled content rose in the complexes. Hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, and electrostatic interactions were the primary forces that formed the nanoparticles. The contact force between HBDGG and Cs enhanced the stability of the nanoparticles. The particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential were 526.10 ± 11.78 nm, 0.20 ± 0.06, and 51.31 ± 0.66 mV, respectively, at a mass ratio of 1:1 between HBDGG and Cs. The nanoparticles exhibited good ionic, acid-base, and storage stability in addition to being widely distributed. This work offers a theoretical foundation for employing HBDGG-Cs nanoparticles to deliver bioactive components in food as well as a novel method for the comprehensive usage of HBDGG and Cs. In the field of advanced electrical energy conversion and storage, remarkable attention has been given to the development of new, more sustainable electrolytes. In this regard, the combination of redox shuttles with aqueous bio-polymer gels seems to be a valid alternative via which to overcome the typical drawbacks of common liquid electrolytes such as corrosion, volatility or leakage. Despite the promising results obtained so far, redox-active species such as bis(6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine)copper(I) trifluoromethanesulfonylimide, ([Cu(I)(dmby)2]TFSI), still present inherent challenges associated with their poor water solubility and oxidative lability, which prevents their employment in cheap and sustainable aqueous electrolytes. The present study investigates the stabilization of the Cu(I) complex ([Cu(I)(dmby)2]TFSI) within two natural hydrogels based on the biopolymers κ-carrageenan and galactomannan, using ZnO nanoparticles as gelling agents. These eco-friendly and biocompatible systems are proposed as potential matrices for quasi-solid electrolytes (QSEs), offering a promising platform for advanced electrolyte design in electrochemical applications. Both hydrogels effectively stabilized and retained the redox species within their networks. In order to shed light on distinct stabilization mechanisms, complementary FTIR and SEM analyses were relevant to reveal the structural rearrangements, specific to each matrix, upon complex incorporation. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis confirmed notable thermal resilience in both systems, with the galactomannan-based gel demonstrating enhanced performance. Altogether, this work introduces a novel strategy for embedding copper-based redox couples into gelled electrolytes, paving the way toward their integration in real electrochemical devices, where long-term stability, redox retention, and energy conversion efficiency are critical evaluation criteria. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor crystals a few nanometers in size. Due to their vibrant colors and unique photoluminescence (PL), QDs are widely utilized in displays, where barrier films provide essential shielding. However, one of the primary challenges of QD applications remains achieving sufficient robustness while keeping costs low. Over the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the encapsulation of QDs within silica matrices, aiming to preserve their original PL properties. Research efforts have evolved from bulk forms to thin films. Silica nanoparticles containing multiple embedded QDs have emerged as particularly promising candidates for practical applications. This review highlights recent advancements in silica-based QD encapsulation, incorporating findings from both the authors’ investigations and those of other research groups within the field. Silica glass possesses inherent shielding capabilities, but silane coupling agents such as (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane and (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane tend to negatively impact this functionality when they are used alone, partly because of the limited formation of a well-developed glass network structure. However, when judiciously controlled, they can serve as mediators between the QD surface and the surrounding pure silica glass matrix, helping to preserve PL properties and control the morphology of silica particles. This review discusses the potential for achieving exceptional shielding properties through sol–gel glass fabrication at low temperatures, utilizing both tetraethoxysilane and other silane coupling agents. Antimicrobial materials are gaining significant interest as awareness of pathogens spread through contact becomes increasingly prevalent. While various compounds with antibacterial properties have been explored as active ingredients in such materials, many are prone to leaching, leading to undesirable risks to the environment and to human health. Herein, we develop and test a multilayered plastic film filled with silver nanoparticles, long known to be potent antibacterial agents, supported in a silica matrix. Cross-linked methacrylate layers on both sides of these nanostructures prevent leaching even after several uses, making the material essentially benign. Furthermore, we derive silica from rice husk, an abundant and affordable agricultural waste product. Our findings demonstrate that initial irradiation of the material with UVA light facilitates the photothermal migration of nanoparticles towards the material’s surface, thereby significantly enhancing its antimicrobial properties. Remarkably, after just 5 min of visible light irradiation, the material exhibits over 99.999% inhibition of bacterial growth. This environmentally friendly plastic composite harnesses visible light to actively combat bacteria, providing an exciting proof-of-concept for future applications in antimicrobial coatings. In this study, we investigate the effect of varying the loading of molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (MIP-NPs) on the morphology and sensing performance of electrospun nanofibres for the selective detection of linalool, a representative plant-emitted monoterpene. The proposed strategy combines two synergistic technologies: molecular imprinting, to introduce chemical selectivity, and electrospinning, to generate high-surface-area nanofibrous sensing layers with tuneable architecture. Linalool-imprinted MIP-NPs were synthesized via precipitation polymerization using methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), yielding spherical particles with an average diameter of ~135 nm. These were embedded at increasing concentrations into a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and processed into nanofibrous mats by electrospinning. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that MIP content modulates fibre roughness and network morphology. Electrical sensing tests performed under different relative humidity (RH) conditions showed that elevated humidity (up to 60% RH) improves response stability by enhancing ion-mediated charge transport. The formulation with the highest MIP-NP loading exhibited the best performance, with a detection limit of 8 ppb (±1) and 84% selectivity toward linalool over structurally related terpenes (α-pinene and R-(+)-limonene). These results demonstrate a versatile sensing approach in which performance can be precisely tuned by adjusting MIP content, enabling the development of humidity-tolerant, selective VOC sensors for environmental and plant-related applications. The development of robust oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst with fast kinetics and good durability is significant for rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs) but still remains a great challenge. Herein, inspired by the chain-like interconnective porous structure of plant luffa, an ORR catalyst of Co/CoCr2O4@ IPCF is fabricated, with Co and CoCr2O4 hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) embedding into interconnective porous carbon nanofibers (IPCF). Contributing to CoCr2O4 NPs stabilized Co active sites, the resulting ZABs assembled with Co/CoCr2O4@IPCF as an air cathode catalyst delivering sustainable cycling stability of 550 h, surpassing that of Co@IPCF based on ZABs (215 h). Also, the Co/CoCr2O4@IPCF has a high ORR performance with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.866 V in alkaline medium. The cycling stability originates from the IPCF carrier and the synergistic effect of Co NPs and CoCr2O4 NPs. The chain-like interconnective porous structure of the fibers provides more active sites and facilitates mass transfer to avoid the accumulation of OH and the exposure of H2O2, while the CoCr2O4 NPs can serve as a regulator for stabilizing the Co NPs electrochemical performance. The preparation and use of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles for water remediation is a widely investigated research field. To improve the efficacy of such nanomaterials, different synthetic processes and functionalization methods have been developed in the framework of green chemistry to exploit their magnetic properties and adsorption capacity in a sustainable way. In this work, iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles embedded in cross-linked sodium alginate beads designed to clean water from metal ions were magnetically characterized. In particular, the effect of copper adsorption on their magnetic properties was investigated. The magnetic characterization in a DC field of the beads before adsorption showed the presence of a superparamagnetic state at 300 K—a state that was also preserved after copper adsorption. The main differences in terms of magnetic properties before and after Cu2+ adsorption were the reduction of the magnetic signal (observed by comparing the saturation magnetization) and a different shape of the blocking temperature distribution obtained by magnetization versus temperature measurements. The evaluation of the reduction in magnetization can be important from the application perspective since it can affect the efficiency of the beads’ removal from the water medium after treatment. The hybrid inorganic–organic material concept plays a bold role in multifunctional materials, combining different features on one platform. Once varying properties coexist without cancelling each other on one matrix, a new type of supermaterial can be formed. This concept showed that silver nanoparticles can be embedded together with inorganic and organic surface coatings and silicon quantum dots for symbiotic antibacterial character and UV-excited visible light fluorescent features. Additionally, fluorosilane material can be coupled with this prepolymeric structure to add the hydrophobic feature, showing water contact angles around 120°, providing self-cleaning features. Optical properties of the components and the final material were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy and PL analysis. Atomic investigations and structural variations were detected by XPS, SEM, and EDX atomic mapping methods, correcting the atomic entities inside the coating. FT-IR tracked surface features, and statistical analysis of the quantum dots and nanoparticles was conducted. Multifunctional final materials showed antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus, exhibiting self-cleaning features with high surface contact angles and visible light fluorescence due to the silicon quantum dot incorporation into the sol-gel-produced nanocomposite hybrid structure. The development of sustainable and functional nanocomposites has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their broad spectrum of potential applications, including wood preservation. Also, a global goal is to reuse the large volumes of waste for environmental issues. In this context, the aim of the study was to obtain soda lignin particles, to graft ZnO nanoparticles onto their surface and to apply these hybrids, embedded into a biodegradable polymer matrix, as protection/preservation coating for oak wood. The organic–inorganic hybrids were characterized in terms of compositional, structural, thermal, and morphological properties that confirm the efficacy of soda lignin extraction and ZnO grafting by physical adsorption onto the decorating support and by weak interactions and coordination bonding between the components. The developed solution based on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and lignin-ZnO was applied to oak wood specimens by brushing, and the improvement in hydrophobicity (evaluated by water absorption that decreased by 48.8% more than wood, humidity tests where the treated sample had a humidity of 4.734% in comparison with 34.911% for control, and contact angle of 97.8° vs. 80.5° for untreated wood) and UV and fungal attack protection, while maintaining the color and aspect of specimens, was sustained. L.ZnO are well dispersed into the polymer matrix, ensuring a smooth and less porous wood surface. According to the results, the obtained wood coating using both a biodegradable polymeric matrix and a waste-based preservative can be applied for protection against weathering degradation factors, with limited water uptake and swelling of the wood, UV shielding, reduced wood discoloration and photo-degradation, effective protection against fungi, and esthetic quality. This study presents the design and microstructural investigation of a single-crystal (SX) Re-bearing high-entropy superalloy (HESA-X1) featuring a thermally stable γ–γ′–γ hierarchical microstructure. The alloy exhibits FCC γ nanoparticles embedded within L12-ordered γ′ precipitates, themselves distributed in a γ matrix, with the suppression of detrimental topologically close-packed (TCP) phases. To elucidate solidification behavior and phase stability, Scheil–Gulliver and TC-PRISMA simulations were conducted alongside SEM and XRD analyses. Near-atomic scale analysis in 3D using Atom Probe Tomography (APT) revealed pronounced elemental partitioning, with Re strongly segregating to the γ matrix, while Al and Ti were preferentially enriched in the γ′ phase. Notably, Re demonstrated a unique partitioning behavior compared to conventional superalloys, facilitating the formation and stabilization of γ nanoparticles during two-step aging (Ag-2). These γ nanoparticles significantly contribute to improved mechanical properties. Long-term aging (up to 200 h) at 750–850 °C confirmed exceptional phase stability, with minimal coarsening of γ′ and retention of γ nanoparticles. The coarsening rate constant K of γ′ at 750 °C was significantly lower than that of Re-free HESA, confirming the diffusion-suppressing effect of Re. These findings highlight critical roles of Re in enhancing microstructural stability by reducing atomic mobility, enabling the development of next-generation HESAs with superior thermal and mechanical properties for high-temperature applications. At emergency sites, bacteria in the environment can cause secondary wound infections. Timely treatment of infected wounds can improve the prognosis. In this study, we designed a closed-loop system for real-time wound infection monitoring and electronically controlled drug release, enabling rapid and stable deployment at disaster sites. Multilayer screen-printed electrodes were developed to detect uric acid (UA), pH, and temperature biomarkers. The electrode’s outermost layer was shielded by a zwitterionic conductive hydrogel (Gel) to prevent environmental interference and achieve systematic antibacterial protection through in situ reduction of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on its surface. For rapid and efficient drug delivery, amikacin (Ami) loaded cationic liposomes (Lipo) embedded in the zwitterionic conductive hydrogel (Gel-Lipo@Ami) were integrated as the core therapeutic carrier. This closed-loop system provides timely infection detection and enables in situ treatment during emergency rescues. Full article

Salmonella is a rapidly spreading and widespread zoonotic infectious disease that poses a serious threat to the safety of both poultry and human lives. Therefore, the timely detection of Salmonella in foods and animals has become an urgent need for food safety. This work describes the construction of an aptamer-based sensor for Salmonella detection, using Fe3O4 magnetic beads and Ag@Au core–shell nanoparticles-embedded 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4MBA). Leveraging the high affinity between biotin and streptavidin, aptamers were conjugated to Fe3O4 magnetic beads. These beads were then combined with Ag@4MBA@Au nanoparticles functionalized with complementary aptamers through hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions, yielding a SERS-based aptamer sensor with optimized Raman signals from 4MBA. When target bacteria are present, aptamer-conjugated magnetic beads exhibit preferential binding to the bacteria, leading to a decrease in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal. And it was used for the detection of five different serotypes of Salmonella, respectively, and the results showed that the aptamer sensor exhibited a good linear relationship between the concentration range of 102–108 CFU/mL and LOD is 35.51 CFU/mL. The SERS aptasensor was utilized for the detection of spiked authentic samples with recoveries between 94.0 and 100.4%, which proved the usability of the method and helped to achieve food safety detection. Electrospun nanofiber membranes based on cellulose acetate (CA) have gained increasing attention for wastewater treatment due to their high surface area, tuneable structure, and ease of functionalization. In this study, the performance of CA membranes was enhanced by incorporating aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) at varying concentrations (0–2 wt.%). The structural, morphological, and thermal properties of the resulting CA/Al2O3 nanocomposite membranes were investigated through FTIR, XRD, SEM, water contact angle (WCA), pore size measurements, and DSC analyses. FTIR and XRD confirmed strong interactions and the uniform dispersion of the Al2O3 NPs within the CA matrix. The incorporation of Al2O3 improved membrane hydrophilicity, reducing the WCA from 107° to 35°, and increased the average pore size from 0.62 µm to 0.86 µm. These modifications led to enhanced filtration performance, with the membrane containing 2 wt.% Al2O3 achieving a 99% removal efficiency for Indigo Carmine (IC) dye, a maximum adsorption capacity of 45.59 mg/g, and a high permeate flux of 175.47 L·m−2 h−1 bar−1. Additionally, phytotoxicity tests using Lactuca sativa seeds showed a significant increase in germination index from 20% (untreated) to 88% (treated), confirming the safety of the permeate for potential reuse in agricultural irrigation. These results highlight the effectiveness of Al2O3-modified CA electrospun membranes for sustainable wastewater treatment and water reuse. Full article

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a benchmark photocatalyst for environmental applications, but its limited visible-light activity due to a wide band gap and fast charge recombination restricts its practical efficiency. This study presents the development of heterostructured Ag (Au)/MoS2-TiO2 inverse opal (IO) films that synergistically integrate photonic, plasmonic, and semiconducting functionalities to overcome these limitations. The materials were synthesized via a one-step evaporation-induced co-assembly approach, embedding MoS2 nanosheets and plasmonic nanoparticles (Ag or Au) within a nanocrystalline TiO2 photonic framework. The inverse opal architecture enhances light harvesting through slow-photon effects, while MoS2 and plasmonic nanoparticles improve visible-light absorption and charge separation. By tuning the template sphere size, the photonic band gap was aligned with the TiO2-MoS2 absorption edge and the localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag, enabling optimal spectral overlap. The corresponding Ag/MoS2-TiO2 photonic films exhibited superior photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and Mott–Schottky analysis confirmed favorable band alignment and Fermi level shifts that facilitate interfacial charge transfer. These results highlight the potential of integrated photonic–plasmonic-semiconductor architectures for efficient solar-driven water treatment. Full article
