In high-precision optical systems such as laser optics, astronomical observation, and semiconductor lithography, anti-reflection coatings are crucial for light transmittance, imaging quality, and stability, but traditional designs face modeling challenges in balancing ultralow reflectivity, high wavefront quality, and manufacturability amid multi-dimensional parameter coupling and multi-objective constraints. This study addresses these by proposing a unified mathematical modeling framework integrating a Symmetric five-layer high-low refractive index alternating structure (V-H-V-H-V) with dual-scale nanostructures, employing a constrained quasi-Newton optimization algorithm (L-BFGS-B) to minimize reflectivity, wavefront root-mean-square (RMS) error, and surface roughness root-mean-square (RMS) in a six-dimensional parameter space. The Sellmeier equation is adopted to calculate wavelength-dependent material refractive indices, the model uses the transfer matrix method for the Symmetric five-layer high-low refractive index alternating structure’s reflectivity, incorporates nano-surface height function gradient correction, sub-wavelength modulation, and radial optimization, applies Zernike polynomials for low-order aberration correction, quantifies surface roughness via curvature proxies, and optimizes via a weighted objective function prioritizing low reflectivity. Numerical results show the spatial average reflectivity at 632.8 nm reduced to 0.13%, the weighted average reflectivity across five representative wavelengths in the 550–720 nm range to 0.037%, the reflectivity uniformity to 10.7%, the post-correction wavefront RMS to 11.6 milliwavelengths, and the surface height standard deviation to 7.7 nm. This framework enhances design accuracy and efficiency, suits UV nanoimprinting and electron beam evaporation, and offers significant value for high-power lasers, lithography, and space-borne radars. Conventional anticorrosive coatings suffer from limitations of low solid content and rigorous surface pretreatment, posing environmental and cost challenges in field applications. In this study, a novel high-solid-content (>95%) epoxy-polysiloxane (Ep-PSA) ceramic metal coating was prepared that enables low-surface-treatment application. The originality lies in the synergistic combination of nano-sized ceramic powders, high-strength metallic powders, polysiloxane resin (PSA), and solvent-free epoxy resin (Ep), which polymerize through an organic–inorganic interpenetrating network to form a dense shielding layer. The as-prepared Ep-PSA coating system chemically bonds with indigenous metal substrate via Zn3(PO4)2 and resin functionalities during curing, forming a conversion layer that reduces surface preparation requirements. Differentiating from existing high-solid coatings, this approach achieves superior long-term barrier properties, evidenced by |Z|0.01Hz value of 9.64 × 108 Ω·cm2, after 6000 h salt spray exposure—four orders of magnitude higher than commercial 60% epoxy zinc-rich coatings (2.26 × 104 Ω·cm2, 3000 h salt spray exposure). The coating exhibits excellent adhesion (14.28 MPa) to standard sandblasted steel plates. This environmentally friendly, durable, and easily applicable composite coating demonstrates significant field application value for large-scale energy infrastructure. Full article

This study investigates the effects of deposition angle and arc current on the surface morphology and optical response of Ti coatings obtained by unfiltered cathodic arc evaporation for spectrally selective solar-thermal applications. 100 nm-thick Ti films were deposited at normal (0°) and oblique (80°) angles of incidence, with arc currents of 65 A and 90 A, respectively. The SEM measurements revealed the characteristic arc-generated microdroplet population. At normal incidence (0°), droplets are predominantly spherical and relatively uniformly distributed, whereas at 80° incidence, many droplets exhibit elongated footprints aligned with the incoming flux from the Ti cathode. This behavior is consistent with oblique-angle deposition (OAD), where the arrival geometry can promote self-shadowing and transient droplet spreading before solidification. AFM confirms an increase in nanoscale roughness, whereas GIXRD indicates nanocrystalline α-Ti and cubic TiO, with maximum crystallinity for 0°/65 A. Contact-angle measurements demonstrate a transition from hydrophobic 316L (~103°) to moderately hydrophilic Ti-coated surfaces (~68–72°), with only minor dependence on deposition geometry. Optical reflectance in the 400–800 nm range is significantly lower for Ti-coated glass and is further reduced for OAD films, indicating enhanced solar absorptance. Full article

Atherosclerosis remains a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality despite advances in pharmacological and interventional therapies. Current treatment approaches face limitations including systemic side effects, inadequate local drug delivery, and restenosis following vascular interventions. Gel-based technologies offer unique advantages through tunable mechanical properties, controlled degradation kinetics, high drug-loading capacity, and potential for stimuli-responsive therapeutic release. This review examines gel platforms across multiple scales and applications in atherosclerosis research and intervention. First, gel-based in vitro models are discussed. These include hydrogel matrices simulating plaque microenvironments, three-dimensional cellular culture platforms, and microfluidic organ-on-chip devices. These devices incorporate physiological flow to investigate disease mechanisms under controlled conditions. Second, therapeutic strategies are addressed through macroscopic gels for localized treatment. These encompass natural polymer-based, synthetic polymer-based, and composite formulations. Applications include stent coatings, adventitial injections, and catheter-delivered depots. Natural polymers often possess intrinsic biological activities including anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties that may contribute to therapeutic effects. Third, nano- and microgels for systemic delivery are examined. These include polymer-based nanogels with stimuli-responsive drug release responding to oxidative stress, pH changes, and enzymatic activity characteristic of atherosclerotic lesions. Inorganic–organic composite nanogels incorporating paramagnetic contrast agents enable theranostic applications by combining therapy with imaging-guided treatment monitoring. Current challenges include manufacturing consistency, mechanical stability under physiological flow, long-term safety assessment, and regulatory pathway definition. Future opportunities are discussed in multi-functional integration, artificial intelligence-guided design, personalized formulations, and biomimetic approaches. Gel technologies demonstrate substantial potential to advance atherosclerosis management through improved spatial and temporal control over therapeutic interventions. Full article

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous organic frameworks (POFs) have been extensively explored in recent years as lubricant additives for various systems due to their structural designability, pore storage capacity, and tunable surface chemistry. These materials are utilized to construct low-friction, low-wear interfaces and investigate the potential for superlubricity. This paper systematically reviews the tribological behavior and key mechanisms of MOFs/POFs in oil-based, water-based, and solid coating systems. In oil-based systems, MOFs/POFs primarily achieve friction reduction and wear resistance through third-body particles, layer slip, and synergistic friction-induced chemical/physical transfer films. However, limitations in achieving superlubricity stem from the multi-component heterogeneity of boundary films and the dynamic evolution of shear planes. In water-based systems, MOFs/POFs leverage hydrophilic functional groups to induce hydration layers, promote polymer thickening, and soften gels through interfacial anchoring. Under specific conditions, a few cases exhibit superlubricity with coefficients of friction entering the 10−3 range. In solid coating systems, two-dimensional MOFs/COFs with controllable orientation leverage interlayer weak interactions and incommensurate interfaces to reduce potential barriers, achieving structural superlubricity at the 10−3–10−4 level on the micro- and nano-scales. However, at the engineering scale, factors such as roughness, contamination, and discontinuities in the lubricating film still constrain performance, leading to amplified energy dissipation and degradation. Finally, this paper discusses key challenges in achieving superlubricity with MOFs/POFs and proposes future research directions, including the design of shear-plane structures. Full article

Large-area metasurfaces were fabricated via a tunable pyramidal interference lithography (PIL) technique, which uses custom-built 2-faced, 3-faced, and 4-faced pyramidal prisms to create metasurfaces with customizable nano- and micro-scale surface feature periodicities. The 2-faced prism produced linear surface relief diffraction gratings, while the 3-faced prism produced metasurfaces with triangular lattices and the 4-faced prism produced metasurfaces with square lattices, all on azobenzene thin films. A double inline prism set-up enabled control over the metasurface feature periodicity, allowing systematic increase in the pattern size. Additional tunability was achieved by placing a prism inline with a lens, allowing precise control over the metasurface feature periodicity. A theoretical model was derived and successfully matched to the experimental results. The resulting metasurfaces were coated with gold and exhibited distinct surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) responses, confirming their functionality. Overall, this work establishes PIL as a cost-effective and highly adaptable metasurface fabrication method for producing customizable periodic metasurfaces for photonic, plasmonic, and sensing applications. The deterioration of concrete hydraulic structures caused by chemical factors, seepage, and environmental stress necessitates advanced protective coatings that enhance durability, flexibility, and environmental sustainability. Conventional protective systems often exhibit limited durability under combined hydraulic, thermal, and chemical stress. In this study, a novel polyfluorosilicone-based coating system is presented, which integrates a deep-penetrating nano-primer for substrate reinforcement, a crack-bridging polymer intermediate layer for impermeability, and a polyfluorosilicone topcoat providing UV and weather resistance. The multilayer architecture addresses the inherent trade-offs between adhesion, flexibility, and durability observed in conventional waterproofing systems. Informed by a mechanistic study of interfacial adhesion and failure modes, the coating exhibits outstanding high mechanical and performance characteristics, including a mean pull-off bond strength of 4.56 ± 0.14 MPa for the fully cured triple-layer coating system, with cohesive failure occurring within the concrete substrate, signifying a bond stronger than the material it protects. The system withstood 2.2 MPa water pressure and 200 freeze–thaw cycles with 87.2% modulus retention, demonstrating stable mechanical and environmental durability. The coating demonstrated excellent resilience, showing no evidence of degradation after 1000 h of UV aging, 200 freeze–thaw cycles, and exposure to alkaline solutions. This water-based formulation meets green-material standards, with low volatile organic compound (VOC) levels and minimal harmful chemicals. The results validate that a multi-scale, layered design strategy effectively decouples and addresses the distinct failure mechanisms in hydraulic environments, providing a robust and sustainable solution. This investigation has yielded a remarkably efficient metallic catalyst. Copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni) nanoparticles were concurrently deposited onto micron-sized aluminum (µAl) through a displacement reaction, resulting in the formation of [nCu+nCo+nNi]/µAl composites. The interfacial layer of the nanocomposite facilitates the creation of efficient oxygen transport pathways, significantly augmenting thermal release. In the context of the ADN/AP oxidizer, the [nCu+nCo+nNi]/µAl configuration demonstrates a substantial synergistic catalytic effect, reducing its thermal decomposition temperature by an impressive 104.1 °C. Combustion experiments have corroborated that this composite markedly enhances flame intensity, combustion temperature, and the burning rate of the ADN/AP system. The underlying thermal-oxidative mechanism was elucidated through comprehensive thermal analysis of the composite both prior to and following a heat treatment at 1100 °C. Moreover, through an integration of thermal analysis and combustion experiments, the catalytic mechanism of [nCu+nCo+nNi]/µAl on the thermolysis of ADN/AP was elucidated, and a plausible reaction pathway under thermal stimulation was proposed (e.g., NH4ClO4+NH4N(NO2)2Cu,Co,NiN2+H2O+HCl+O2+[O]). The developed nanocomposite significantly enhances the performance of oxidizers, presenting considerable potential for a wide array of applications in solid propellants. Full article

Magnesium aluminate spinel nanoparticles (MgAl2O4-S-NPs) represent a promising class of nanoceramics with potential biomedical applications due to their physicochemical stability and antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to determine the structural characteristics, composition, and biological performance of MgAl2O4 spinel nanoparticles that were synthesized via a mechanochemical method. Structural and compositional characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Antibacterial activity was evaluated against Helicobacter pylori and Enterococcus faecalis using bacterial viability assays. Structural and morphological analyses confirmed the successful formation of single-phase cubic MgAl2O4 with a polyhedral morphology and nanoscale size distribution. Bacterial viability was quantified through optical density measurements following exposure to MgAl2O4-S-NPs at different concentrations. The nanoparticles exhibited both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects, with activity being demonstrated against the tested bacterial strains. Mechanochemically synthesized MgAl2O4-S-NPs are promising candidates for biomedical applications, including dental materials, antimicrobial coatings, and infection-control strategies. Overall, the findings highlight the potential of MgAl2O4-S-NPs as effective antimicrobial agents that can be produced through an environmentally friendly synthesis route. Full article

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS)-derived bio-based polyurethane coatings typically exhibit poor hydrophobicity and short nutrient release durations, limiting their ability to satisfy long-term crop requirements. This study developed improved controlled-release urea by preparing water-repellent and compact bio-polymer coatings from recyclable SMS using non-toxic siloxane and nano-SiO2 modifiers through simple processes. The dual modification markedly reduced water absorption (from 6.60% to 4.43%) and porosity (from 6.32% to 3.92%), creating a dense coating with lotus-leaf-like nanoscale surface protrusions and fewer intermembrane pores. As a result, the nitrogen (N) release period of the dual-modified bio-polymer-polyurethane-coated urea (SBPCU) with a 7% coating thickness was extended from 23 days to 42 days. Phytotoxicity assessments confirmed the excellent biosafety of the bio-polymer coating, revealing no adverse effects on maize growth and even promotional effects at low concentrations. This approach offers a sustainable, eco-friendly, and scalable strategy for producing bio-polymer-coated urea from agricultural waste, serving as a viable alternative to petrochemical coatings while improving nutrient use efficiency and biosafety. The miniaturisation of electronic devices has intensified the demand for compact, high-performance lithium-ion batteries. This review synthesises recent progress in microscale battery development, focusing on microfabrication techniques, nanostructured materials, porosity-engineered architectures, and strategies for reducing non-active components. It explores both top–down and bottom–up fabrication methods, the integration of nanomaterials, the role of gradient electrode architectures in enhancing ion transport and energy density, along with strategies to reduce non-active components, such as separators and current collectors, to maximise volumetric efficiency. Advances in top–down and bottom–up fabrication methods, including photolithography, laser structuring, screen printing, spray coating, mechanical structuring, and 3D printing, enable precise control over electrode geometry and enhance ion transport and material utilisation. Nanostructured anodes, cathodes, electrolytes, and separators further improve conductivity, mechanical stability, and cycling performance. Gradient porosity designs optimise ion distribution in thick electrodes, while innovations in ultra-thin separators and lightweight current collectors support higher energy density. Remaining challenges relate to scalability, mechanical robustness, and long-term stability, especially in fully integrated micro-battery architectures. Future development will rely on hybrid fabrication methods, advanced material compatibility, and data-driven optimisation to bridge laboratory innovations with practical applications. By integrating microfabrication and nanoscale engineering, next-generation LIBs can deliver high energy density and long operational lifetimes for miniaturised and flexible electronic systems. A thorough understanding of the dispersion characteristics of graphene oxide (GO), its micro-pore enhancement mechanisms, and correlations with mechanical properties are crucial for advancing high-strength, durable green concrete. Introducing recycled concrete powder (RCP) can weaken the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and inhibit hydration reactions, degrading the pore structure and affecting mechanical strength and durability. However, traditional methods struggle to accurately characterize and quantitatively analyze GO-modified pore structures due to their nanoscale size, microstructural diversity, and characterization technique limitations. To address these challenges, this study integrates deep learning-based backscattered electron image analysis with deep Taylor decomposition feature extraction. This innovative method systematically analyzes pore characteristic evolution and the correlation between porosity and mechanical strength. The results indicate that GO promotes Calcium Silicate Hydrate gel growth, refines pores, and reduces pore connectivity, decreasing the maximum pore size by 33.4–45.2%. Using a Convolutional Neural Network architecture, BSE images are efficiently processed and analyzed, achieving an average recognition accuracy of 94.3–96.9%. The optimized degree of GO coating on enhanced regions reaches 30.2%. Fitting porosity with mechanical strength and chloride ion permeability coefficients reveals that enhanced regions exhibit the highest correlation with mechanical strength and durability in regenerated cementitious materials, with R2 values ranging from 0.79 to 0.99. The deep learning-assisted pore structure characterization method demonstrates high accuracy and efficiency, providing a critical theoretical basis and data support for performance optimization and engineering applications of recycled cementitious materials. This research expands the application of deep learning in building materials and offers new insights into the relationship between the microstructural and macroscopic properties of recycled cementitious materials. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) require reliable micro- and nanoscale patterning of semiconducting layers, yet conjugated polymers have long been considered incompatible with photolithography due to dissolution and chemical damage from photoresist solvents. Here, we present a photolithography-compatible strategy based on doping-induced solubility conversion (DISC), demonstrated using poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT). AuCl3 doping reversibly modulates the benzoid/quinoid resonance balance, lamellar stacking, and π–π interactions, suppressing solubility during lithographic exposure, while dedoping restores the intrinsic electronic properties. Using this approach, micropatterns with linewidths as small as 2 µm were fabricated in diverse geometries—including line arrays, concentric rings, dot arrays, and curved channels—with high fidelity; quantitative analysis of dot arrays yielded mean absolute errors of 48–66 nm and coefficients of variation of 2.0–3.9%, confirming resolution and reproducibility across large areas. Importantly, OFETs based on patterned PBTTT exhibited charge-carrier mobility, threshold voltage, and on/off ratios comparable to spin-coated devices, despite undergoing multiple photolithography steps, indicating preservation of transport characteristics. Furthermore, the same DISC-assisted lithography was successfully applied to other representative p-type conjugated polymers, including P3HT and PDPP-4T, confirming the universality of the method. This scalable strategy thus combines the precision of established lithography with the functional advantages of organic semiconductors, providing a robust platform for high-density organic electronic integration in flexible circuits, biointerfaces, and active-matrix systems. Performance breakthroughs and safety assurance of aerospace equipment are critical to the advancement of modern aerospace technology. As a key protective system for the hot-end components of aeroengines, thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) play a vital role in ensuring the safe operation of aeroengines and overall flight safety. To address the core detection technology challenge for micro–nano damage precursors in aerospace TBCs, this study proposes an enhanced detection framework, namely YOLOv11-LADC. Specifically, the framework integrates the LSKA attention mechanism to construct the C2PSA-LA module, thereby enhancing the detection capability for micro–nano damage precursors and adaptability to complex small-sample datasets. Additionally, it introduces deformable convolutions (DeformConv) to build the C3k2-DeformCSP module, which dynamically adapts to the irregular deformations of micro–nano damage precursors while reducing computational complexity. A data augmentation strategy incorporating 19 transformations is employed to expand the dataset to 5140 images. A series of experimental results demonstrates that, compared with the YOLOv11 baseline model, the proposed model achieves a 1.6% improvement in precision (P) and a 2.0% increase in recall (R), while maintaining mAP50 and mAP50-95 at near-constant levels. Meanwhile, the computational complexity (GFLOPs) is reduced to 6.2, validating the superiority of the enhanced framework in terms of detection accuracy and training efficiency. This further confirms the feasibility and practicality of the YOLOv11-LADC algorithm for detecting multi-scale micro–nano damage precursors in aerospace TBCs. Overall, this study provides an effective solution for the intelligent, high-precision, and real-time detection of multi-scale micro–nano damage precursors in aerospace TBCs. Full article

Silica-based multifunctional coatings hold great promise for applications in optical devices, lenses, and solar panels. Herein, we report a facile, low-temperature route to integrate super-hydrophobicity with high transparency and low haze. By precisely controlling particle gradation and applying fluorine passivation, a multi-scale structure with micro-scale uniformity and nano-scale asperity was constructed. This unique architecture, combined with low surface energy, effectively reduces light scattering and enhances air trapping. Consequently, the coated glass achieves a high optical transmittance of 95.24% with a low haze of 0.97%, alongside a water contact angle of 153° and a sliding angle of 3°. The coating also exhibits distinct anti-reflection (an improvement of ~5.0% relative to the bare substrate) and self-cleaning properties. Furthermore, it demonstrates impressive robustness and durability, withstanding extreme conditions including cryogenic temperatures (−50 °C), hygrothermal environments, and long-term outdoor exposure. This work demonstrates the versatile potential of our strategy for fabricating highly transparent and superhydrophobic surfaces. Full article
