This study investigated the effects of reducing organic trace minerals below commercial inclusion levels and compared them with both low-dose and commercial levels of inorganic trace minerals, focusing on growth performance, carcass traits, tibia characteristics, oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase [SOD] and malondialdehyde [MDA]), and immune response (serum IgG) in broilers. A total of 384 one-day-old Ross 308 chicks were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments: (1) commercial-level inorganic trace minerals (ILI; Zn 100 ppm; Cu 15 ppm; Fe 100 ppm; Mn 80 ppm; Se 0.2 ppm; I 3 ppm); (2) low-level organic trace minerals (LLO; Zn 30 ppm; Cu 4 ppm; Fe 11 ppm; Mn 30 ppm; Se 0.225 ppm; I 3 ppm), and (3) low-level inorganic trace minerals (LLI; Zn 30 ppm; Cu 4 ppm; Fe 11 ppm; Mn 30 ppm; Se 0.2 ppm; I 3 ppm). Each treatment consisted of eight replicates with 16 birds per replicate, and diets were provided in two phases: starter (days 1–21) and grower (days 22–35). The results showed that the LLO group demonstrated a significantly improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) during the starter phase, 2.4% better than that of the ILI and LLI groups (p = 0.02). Additionally, filet and thigh muscle yields in the LLO group were higher by 11.9% (p = 0.03) and 13.9% (p = 0.02), respectively, compared to the ILI group. Other carcass traits, as well as pH and drip loss, were not significantly affected. However, tibia breaking strength at day 35 was 15.1% lower in the LLO group compared to the ILI group (p = 0.02). No significant differences were observed in oxidative stress markers or IgG levels among groups. This study demonstrated that reducing the inclusion level of inorganic trace minerals did not negatively affect broiler growth performance, whereas supplementation with low levels of organic trace minerals improved both growth performance and carcass quality. The size of the gluteus medius muscle (GM) in swine significantly impacts both hindlimb conformation and carcass yield, while little is known about the genetic architecture of this trait. This study aims to estimate genetic parameters and identify candidate genes associated with this trait through a genome-wide association study (GWAS). A total of 439 commercial crossbred pigs, possessing both Landrace and Yorkshire ancestry, were genotyped using the Porcine 50K chip. The length and width of the GM were directly measured, and the area was then calculated from these values. The heritabilities were estimated by HIBLUP (V1.5.0) software, and the GWAS was conducted employing the BLINK model implemented in GAPIT3. The heritability estimates for the length, width, and area of the GM were 0.43, 0.40, and 0.46, respectively. The GWAS identified four genome-wide significant SNPs (rs81381267, rs697734475, rs81298447, and rs81458910) associated with the gluteus medius muscle area. The PDE4D gene was identified as a promising candidate gene potentially involved in the regulation of gluteus medius muscle development. Our analysis revealed moderate heritability estimates for gluteus medius muscle size traits. These findings enhance our understanding of the genetic architecture underlying porcine muscle development. Full article

Pork is a major global source of animal protein, and improving both its production efficiency and meat quality is a central goal in modern animal agriculture and food systems. This study investigated post-inflection-point growth patterns in two genetically distinct pig breeds—the lean-type Yorkshire pig (YP) and the fatty-type Qingyu pig (QYP)—with the aim of elucidating breed-specific characteristics that influence pork quality and yield. Comprehensive evaluations of carcass traits, meat quality attributes, nutritional composition, and gene expression profiles were conducted. After the growth inflection point, carcass traits exhibited greater variability than meat quality traits in both breeds, though with distinct patterns. YPs displayed superior muscle development, with the longissimus muscle area (LMA) increasing rapidly before plateauing at ~130 kg, whereas QYPs maintained more gradual but sustained muscle growth. In contrast, intramuscular fat (IMF)—a key determinant of meat flavor and texture—accumulated faster in YPs post inflection but plateaued earlier in QYPs. Correlation and clustering analyses revealed more synchronized regulation of meat quality traits in QYPs, while YPs showed greater trait variability. Gene expression patterns aligned with these phenotypic trends, highlighting distinct regulatory mechanisms for muscle and fat development in each breed. In addition, based on the growth curves, we calculated the peak age at which the growth rate declined in lean-type and fat-type pigs, which was approximately 200 days for YPs and around 270 days for QYPs. This suggests that these ages may represent the optimal slaughter times for the respective breeds, balancing both economic efficiency and meat quality. These findings provide valuable insights for enhancing pork quality through precision management and offer theoretical guidance for developing breed-specific feeding strategies, slaughter timing, and value-added pork production tailored to consumer preferences in the modern food market. In this study, we explored the dose-dependent effects of neutral sodium humate (NSH) on the growth performance, slaughter traits, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal health of yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 240 one-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly allocated into three groups, with each group consisting of four replicates containing 20 birds per replicate. The control group (Blank) received a basal diet, while the NSH-L and NSH-H groups were provided with the same basal diet included with neutral sodium humate at concentrations of 0.15% and 0.3%, respectively. The results indicate that dietary inclusion of neutral sodium humate at both low (NSH-L) and high (NSH-H) doses significantly increased the body weight and leg muscle yield of yellow-feathered broilers and improved meat quality (p < 0.05). Furthermore, NSH inclusion effectively reduced serum total cholesterol levels and elevated total protein concentration (p < 0.05). In addition, NSH significantly improved duodenal and ileal morphology (e.g., increased villus height and reduced crypt depth), strengthened intestinal barrier integrity (p < 0.05), and enhanced antioxidant capacity (p < 0.05). Notably, the high-dose NSH group (NSH-H) demonstrated significantly greater enhancements in intestinal and barrier integrity compared to the low-dose group (NSH-L). Microbiome analysis revealed that, compared to the Blank group, both the NSH-L and NSH-H groups exhibited significant shifts in cecal microbiota composition, including increased abundance of Bacteroidota and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and reduced abundance of Euryarchaeota and Methanobrevibacter. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that neutral sodium humate acts as a multifunctional feed additive in yellow-feathered broilers, enhancing productivity and gut health. The study provides a theoretical foundation for the scientific application of neutral sodium humate in broiler production. Full article

Background: Heart failure (HF) is frequently associated with skeletal muscle wasting, reduced functional capacity, and malnutrition. High-protein diets offer a promising nutritional intervention to improve these outcomes in individuals with HF. Objective: This systematic review evaluated randomized controlled trials of high-protein dietary interventions in HF populations, with emphasis on intervention characteristics, quantitative benefits, and risk of bias. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search in PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL from inception to June 2025. Eligible studies enrolled adults (≥18 years) with HF, implemented high-protein regimens (≥1.1 g/kg/day or ~25–30% of energy), and reported on functional capacity, body composition, muscle strength, clinical outcomes, or biochemical markers. Two reviewers independently screened, extracted data, and assessed bias (Cochrane RoB 2). Heterogeneity in dosing, duration, and outcomes precluded meta-analysis; we therefore provide a narrative synthesis. Results: Ten trials (nine randomized controlled trials, one pilot) involving 1080 patients (median n = 38; range 21–652) were included. High-protein interventions yielded mean improvements in six-minute walk distance of +32 ± 14 m, lean body mass gain of +1.6 ± 0.9 kg, and 9 ± 4% enhancement in quality-of-life scores; muscle strength effects varied from −2% to +11%. Two studies reported an 18% reduction in HF readmissions (p < 0.05). The risk-of-bias assessment identified two low-risk, three moderate-risk, and one high-risk study. Key limitations include small sample sizes, varied protein dosing (1.1–1.5 g/kg/day), short follow-up (2–6 months), and outcome heterogeneity. Conclusions: High-protein dietary strategies appear to confer modest, clinically relevant gains in functional capacity, nutritional status, and HF readmission risk. Larger, well-powered trials with standardized dosing and longer follow-up are necessary to establish optimal protein targets, long-term efficacy, and safety. Full article

Beef production in Greece is a sector that has been characterized by a decline in both the output and the number of beef-producing animals over the last decades. The major challenge is low beef self-sufficiency; only 19.1% of demand is met by domestic production. The latter leads to a growing reliance on imports of both live animals and carcasses. Hence, the fattening of young bulls from dairy breeds could be an option to address this challenge subject to improving the quality of produced meat. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of extruded linseed in the diet of young bulls on their performance and meat quality. Sixty-eight young Holstein bulls were equally assigned in two experimental groups: the control group (CON, n = 34) and Linseed Group (LS, n = 34). Bulls in the CON group received a basal total mixed ration while LS young bulls were offered the same basal ration supplemented with linseed (5% on dry matter basis) during the final fattening stage. All bulls were subjected to three individual weightings at the beginning, the middle and the end of the trial. The feed offered was recorded daily and feed refusals were weighed for each pen to calculate feed intake. After slaughter, the Longissimus dorsi muscle from each carcass was collected to evaluate meat pH, color, chemical composition, tenderness and fatty acid profile. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effect of dietary intervention on performance and examined meat parameters, with significance set at p < 0.05, using SPSS software (version 29.0). Average daily gain, dry matter intake and feed conversion ratio were not affected by the dietary intervention (p > 0.05). Similarly, carcass yield and dressing percentage remained unaffected (p > 0.05). Adding extruded linseed did not result in differences in meat quality traits (p > 0.05), except for meat pH, which was significantly decreased in the LS group (p < 0.05), indicating more efficient post-mortem glycolysis. Finally, the inclusion of extruded linseed resulted in higher levels of α-linolenic acid in the meat (p < 0.05). These results suggest that including 5% extruded linseed (on a DM basis) in the diet of young Holstein bulls increased meat n-3 content, improved beef pH and maintained production performance. Meat quality is influenced by factors such as age, breed, slaughter weight, and nutrition. This study investigated the growth performance, slaughter performance, and meat quality of ducks across different breeds and ages. Results indicated that at the same age, significant differences in body weight were observed among breeds (p < 0.05), with the weight ranking in descending order as follows: Cherry Valley ducks (C) > Wuqin 10 meat ducks (W) > Mianyang Partridge ducks (M) > Liancheng White ducks (L). A comparison of the same breed across different ages revealed that the pectoral muscle ratio tended to increase with age, whereas the leg muscle ratio showed the opposite trend; however, total meat production gradually rose. At all three growth stages, C ducks exhibited higher body weight and meat yield than the other breeds. W ducks demonstrated excellent meat quality traits and appropriate meat production, with indices such as shear force, water-holding capacity, and fat content all higher than those of the other breeds. L ducks and M ducks had relatively lower body weight and meat production compared to the other breeds, yet their shear force and water-holding capacity were superior to those of C ducks. The analysis of meat quality at different times showed that across all breeds, shear force, meat color, muscle fiber diameter, crude protein content, and fat content increased with age, while drip loss rate and muscle fiber density decreased. A comprehensive multi-index evaluation model for duck meat quality under different breeds was established, along with a four-factor principal component model (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4). Using the comprehensive ranking equation K, the meat quality performance of different breeds at various ages, in descending order, was as follows: 63-day-old W > 90-day-old M > 63-day-old C > 90-day-old L > 63-day-old M > 90-day-old C > 63-day-old L > 90-day-old W > 42-day-old C > 42-day-old W. This study not only provides a theoretical basis for evaluating meat quality traits in different duck breeds but also offers insights for breed selection and age-related quality optimization. The focus on selecting broilers for rapid growth rates and enhanced breast muscle yield has resulted in a decline in meat quality. The differences in carcass characteristics and meat quality between Hubbard white broilers (HWs, a commercial breed) and Xueshan chickens (XSs, an indigenous breed) at market age were analyzed to determine the potential mechanisms responsible for these differences. The results show that HWs exhibited significantly better carcass performance than XSs, including the larger weight of the carcass, the breast muscle, and the thigh muscle (p < 0.01). In addition, based on HE staining analysis, HWs’ breast muscles had a considerably larger average myofiber area and diameter than those of XSs (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the physical characteristics of the meat revealed that XSs had higher redness and yellowness and also higher lightness. HW meat had a higher pH and thermal loss, but a lower shear force and drip loss than XS meat (p < 0.01). The content of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was, remarkably, lower in the breast muscles of HWs than of XSs (p < 0.01). In contrast, HWs had a larger concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) than XSs (p < 0.01). Finally, the breast muscles of XSs had lower levels of mRNA expression for genes linked to lipid metabolism, such as fatty acid binding protein 4 (Fabp4) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (Pparα), and had higher levels of the phosphofructokinase muscle type (Pfkm) compared to HWs (p < 0.01). These results indicate that a lower carcass yield was observed in XSs compared with HWs, but that XSs showed better performance in terms of meat quality than HW. Full article

The cultured habitat of Eriocheir sinensis is a crucial factor influencing its nutritional quality. Therefore, it is essential to clarify the differences in the nutritional quality of Eriocheir sinensis reared in different habitats. This study investigated and compared the nutritional value of three edible parts (the hepatopancreas, gonads, and muscles) of female Eriocheir sinensis from three different habitats in the lower reach of the Yangtze River, with a special emphasis on lipid compounds. In addition to tissue indices, proximate composition, energy content, lipid classes, and fatty acid profile, eight lipid quality indices were proposed to evaluate the lipid nutritional quality. The results indicated that the Eriocheir sinensis from the three different habitats were all in good developmental condition. No significant differences were observed for the hepatopancreas index (HIS), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and total edible yield (TEY) among the three habitats, except for muscle index (MI), which was significantly higher in the L-crabs and E-crabs compared to the P-crabs. The highest protein content was found in the gonads, while the hepatopancreas had the highest crude lipid content. Regarding lipid classes, triglycerides dominated the hepatopancreas, and phospholipids were predominant in muscles, whereas phospholipids and triglycerides were predominant in approximately equal amounts in the gonads. Taking eight lipid quality indices into account together, the three major edible tissues of Eriocheir sinensis from the estuarine habitat had the highest nutritional value, followed by the hepatopancreas from the pond habitat. The current research will provide basic nutritional data for consumers to purchase Eriocheir sinensis and establish the theoretical groundwork for paving new paths for improving the nutritional quality combined with habitat conditions in future studies. Background: Myofunctional therapy has emerged as a treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) enables objective measurement of lingual and orofacial muscle strength, although it was originally designed for evaluating dysphagia. OSA is frequently associated with a hypotonic phenotype characterized by reduced strength in upper airway muscles, but its identification remains unclear. Objective: We evaluated the usefulness of IOPI measurements in identifying hypotonic phenotypes among patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study analyzing the relationship between IOPI scores, sleep polygraphy metrics—such as the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI)—and findings from physical examination. In addition to the standard IOPI protocol, we introduced novel maneuvers aimed at providing a more comprehensive assessment of oropharyngeal muscle function. Results: Although IOPI conventional maneuvers showed no clear association with AHI or ODI, the inferior tongue maneuver showed higher awake tongue strength, with a statistically significant correlation to both AHI (r = 0.2873; p = 0.008) and ODI (r = 0.2495; p = 0.032). Performing each exercise three times yielded highly consistent results across trials (r > 0.94), but did not significantly alter the overall outcome. Interestingly, lower tongue strength values were observed in patients with a high-arched palate (p < 0.05), whereas no relevant associations were found with the presence of a restricted lingual frenulum or CPAP use. Conclusions: Incorporating specific IOPI maneuvers, especially the inferior tongue exercise, may provide additional insight into muscle function in OSA. The Impact of Physical Activity on Suicide Attempt in Children: A Systematic Review

Suicide in children is a major global health crisis, with profound impacts on families, friends, and society. Understanding ways to ameliorate the rate of suicide attempt (SA) is critical given that it is a key factor in predicting future suicide risk. SA is the deliberate act of causing physical injury to oneself with the intent of death. The incidence of SA may be influenced by physical activity (PA). PA includes bodily movement via skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure and physical fitness. While there is evidence to suggest that PA improves dysregulation of the parasympathetic nervous system which underpins the physiology of suicidal behaviour, evaluating the impact of PA on SA in children is required. Objectives: This systematic review aims to determine the relationship between PA and SA in children to inform alternative preventative and interventional strategies. Methods: This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO: CRD42023389415. Eight electronic databases were systematically searched. References were transferred to Covidence software for title and abstract screening and full text review were performed based on eligibility criteria: (1) children aged 6–18 years old; (2) participated in PA (individual, group exercise, or team sports); and (3) examined SA as a dependent variable. The JBI Checklist was used to measure the quality and level of bias of included studies. Results: Of the 2322 studies identified, 21 were included in the final analysis of the review. Twenty studies were cross-sectional in design, and one implemented a prospective study design. Thirteen studies (61.9%) yielded statistically significant results, indicating that increased PA, particularly team sport, may be associated with reduced odds of SA. There was some evidence to suggest that certain intensities and frequencies of PA may be beneficial to some and detrimental to other subgroups. Conclusions: The results suggest that PA may reduce the risk of suicide attempts. Although PA may be associated with reduced SA in children, future research is required, which (1) uses standardised outcome variables; (2) adopts longitudinal and experimental study designs; (3) explores qualitative research to determine distinctive factors that influence participation in PA not captured by quantitative research; and (4) examines different target populations such as children with a broad range of mental health issues. Monitoring forearm muscle contraction force in home-based rehabilitation remains challenging. Electromyography (EMG), as a standard technique, is considered impractical and complex for independent use by patients at home, which poses a risk of device misattachment and inaccurate recorded data. Considering the muscle-related modality, several studies have demonstrated an excellent correlation between stretch sensors and EMG, which provides significant potential for addressing the monitoring issue at home. Additionally, due to its flexible nature, it can be attached to the finger, which facilitates the logging of the kinematic mechanisms of a finger. This study proposes a method for estimating forearm muscle contraction in a cylinder grasping environment during home-based rehabilitation using a stretch-sensor glove. This study employed support vector machine (SVM), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), and random forest (RF) to construct the estimation model. The root mean square (RMS) of the EMG signal, representing the muscle contraction force, was collected from 10 participants as the target learning for the stretch-sensor glove. This study constructed an experimental design based on a home-based therapy protocol known as the graded repetitive arm supplementary program (GRASP). Six cylinders with varying diameters and weights were employed as the grasping object. The results demonstrated that the RF model achieved the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) score, which differed significantly from the SVM and MLP models. The time series waveform comparison revealed that the RF model yields a similar estimation output to the ground truth, which incorporates the contraction–relaxation phases and the muscle’s contraction force. Additionally, despite the subjectivity of the participants’ grasping power, the RF model could produce similar trends in the muscle contraction forces of several participants. Utilizing a stretch-sensor glove, the proposed method demonstrated great potential as an alternative modality for monitoring forearm muscle contraction force, thereby improving the practicality for patients to self-implement home-based rehabilitation. Sudden cardiac death represents an unexpected death for which a strong underlying genetic background has been described. The primary causes are identified in cardiomyopathies and channelopathies, which are heart diseases of the muscle and electrical system, respectively, without coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular disease, and congenital heart malformations. Genetic variants, especially single nucleotide variants and short insertions/deletions impacting essential myocardial functions, have shown that cardiomyopathies display high heritability. However, genetic heterogeneity, incomplete penetrance, and variable expression may complicate the interpretation of genetic findings, thus delaying the management of seriously at-risk patients. Moreover, recent studies show that the diagnostic yield related to genetic cardiomyopathies ranges from 28 to 40%, raising the need for further research. In this regard, investigating the occurrence of structural variants, especially copy number variants, may be crucial. Based on these considerations, this review aims to provide an overview of copy number variants identified in cardiomyopathies and discuss them, considering diagnostic yield. This review will ultimately address the necessity of incorporating copy number variants into routine genetic testing for cardiomyopathies and channelopathies, a process increasingly enabled by advances in next-generation sequencing technologies. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the potential anatomical and physiological interconnections between the visual system and the cervical muscular system, as well as to examine the role of the visual system in the etiology and manifestation of cervical musculoskeletal pain or discomfort. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PEDro. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO. The included study designs comprised experimental studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and pilot RCTs. Results: The literature search was conducted between January and May 2025 and yielded 51 studies across all databases. Seven experimental studies were finally included, all of which met the inclusion criteria and presented a mean methodological quality score of 5 on the PEDro methodological quality scale. The studies included data from a total of 308 participants (n = 261; 84.74% females). Subjects in the intervention group reported cervical pain or visual fatigue. Conclusions: Our results indicated a relationship between visual accommodation and increased electromyographic activity of the trapezius muscle, suggesting that accommodative stress may induce cervical muscle fatigue and pain. Background: This scoping review aims to map and summarise physical therapy interventions specifically targeting gait and balance in individuals with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), highlighting commonly applied strategies, methodological limitations, and clinical implications. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a hereditary neuropathy characterised by progressive motor and sensory impairment, often resulting in reduced mobility, muscle weakness, balance deficits, and fatigue. Although pharmacological options remain limited, rehabilitation is increasingly recognised as a key component of disease management. However, the scope, type, and effectiveness of rehabilitative interventions in CMT remain poorly mapped. Methods: This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, Cochrane, PEDro, Scopus, and Web of Science) were systematically searched up to March 2024. Studies were eligible if they involved participants with CMT undergoing rehabilitation interventions aimed at improving functional outcomes. Data extraction focused on study characteristics, methods, outcome measures, and results. Results: Eleven studies met inclusion criteria, comprising case reports, cohort studies, and two randomised controlled trials. Interventions included aerobic training, strength and balance exercises, videogame-based home programmes, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation. Most studies reported improvements in walking capacity (e.g., 6MWT, 10MWT), postural balance (e.g., BBS), and lower limb strength (e.g., MRC, dynamometry). Some also showed positive changes in fatigue and quality of life, though data were limited. Methodological heterogeneity and small sample sizes limited comparability and generalisability. Conclusions: Rehabilitation appears to yield meaningful improvements in key functional domains in people with CMT. Tailored, multimodal interventions show promise, though long-term benefits remain underexplored. Future research should adopt standardised protocols and outcome measures to better define best practices and optimise patient care. Full article
