This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. Aim: To analyze the burden of road injuries in Colombia from 1990 to 2021, disaggregated by sex, age groups, and road injury category. Methods: Observational study based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021. National data on prevalence, incidence, mortality, years of life lost (YLL), years lived with disability (YLD), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) were obtained. Data are reported in years and age-standardized and age-specific rates per 100,000 inhabitants. A log-linear segmented regression model was employed to analyze trends in DALY rates of road injuries from 1990 to 2021. Results: From 1990 to 2021, the age-standardized prevalence and incidence rates (per 100,000 inhabitants) due to road injury decreased by −30.6% (95% UI: −34.3; −26.4) and −27.5% (95% UI: −30.7; −24.4), respectively. The age-standardized mortality rate trend of road injuries decreased by −40.6% (95% UI: −50.0; −31.0). Meanwhile, the age-standardized DALY rate decreased by −39.7% (95% UI: −47.9; −31.3) during the study period. In all indicators, men’s rates were higher than women’s. By road injury category, the age-standardized rates increased significantly for motorcyclist road injuries, particularly among men. Conclusions: Road injuries in Colombia have declined but remain significant, especially for young men. Motorcycle injuries show alarming increases in mortality and DALY rates. Full article

This study estimates a willingness-to-pay (WTP) space mixed logit model to evaluate user valuations of travel time, safety, and comfort attributes associated with common access modes in Bangkok, including walking, motorcycle taxis, and localized minibuses. The model accounts for preference heterogeneity by specifying random parameters for travel time. Results indicate that users—exhibiting substantial variation in preferences—place higher value on reducing motorcycle taxi travel time, particularly in time-constrained contexts such as peak-hour commuting, whereas walking is more acceptable in less pressured settings. Safety and comfort attributes—such as helmet availability, smooth pavement, and seating—significantly influence access mode choice. Notably, the WTP for helmet availability is estimated at THB 8.04 per trip, equivalent to approximately 40% of the typical fare for station access, underscoring the importance of safety provision. Women exhibit stronger preferences for motorized access modes, reflecting heightened sensitivity to environmental and social conditions. This study represents one of the first applications of WTP-space modeling for valuing informal station access transport in Southeast Asia, offering context-specific and segment-level estimates. These findings support targeted interventions—including differentiated pricing, safety regulations, and service quality enhancements—to strengthen first-/last-mile connectivity. The results provide policy-relevant evidence to advance equitable and sustainable transport, particularly in rapidly urbanizing contexts aligned with SDG 11.2. Full article

In this research work, the authors propose an approach for analyzing a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. The study was conducted under the condition that there are objects in the accident area that limit the visibility of the participants. For this purpose, a three-dimensional simulation model was developed to determine the relative positions of the pedestrian and the motorcycle-driver system at discrete moments, examining the period of time from the moment the pedestrian steps onto the roadway to the moment of contact between the participants. Background: Trauma-related injuries are among the most common reasons for paediatric hospital presentations and represent a substantial component of orthopaedic care. Their management poses unique challenges due to ongoing skeletal development in children. While most reported fractures occur at home or during sports, prior studies have primarily used data from urban European populations, limiting the relevance of their findings for rural and regional settings. Urban-centred research often informs public healthcare guidelines, treatment algorithms, and infrastructure planning, introducing a bias when findings are generalised outside of metropolitan populations. This study addresses that gap by analysing fracture data from two rural trauma centres in New South Wales, Australia. This study assesses paediatric fractures resulting from severe injury mechanisms in rural areas, identifying common fracture types, underlying mechanisms, and treatment approaches to highlight differences in demographics. These findings aim to cast a light on healthcare challenges that regional areas face and to improve the overall cultural safety of children who live and grow up outside of the metropolitan trauma networks. Methods: We analysed data from two major rural referral hospitals in New South Wales (NSW) for paediatric injuries presenting between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2022. This study included 150 patients presenting with fractures following severe mechanisms of injury, triaged into Australasian Triage Scale (ATS) categories 1 and 2 upon initial presentation. Results: A total of 150 severe fractures were identified, primarily affecting the upper and lower limbs. Males presented more frequently than females, and children aged 10–14 years old were most commonly affected. High-energy trauma from motorcycle (dirt bike) accidents was the leading mechanism of injury among all patients, and accounted for >50% of injuries among 10–14-year-old patients. The most common fractures sustained in these events were upper limb fractures, notably of the clavicle (n = 26, 17.3%) and combined radius/ulna fractures (n = 26, 17.3%). Conclusions: Paediatric trauma in regional Australia presents a unique and under-reported challenge, with high-energy injuries frequently linked to unregulated underage dirt bike use. Unlike urban centres where low-energy mechanisms dominate, rural areas require targeted prevention strategies. While most cases were appropriately managed locally, some were transferred to tertiary centres. These findings lay the groundwork for multi-centre research, and support the need for region-specific policy reform in the form of improved formal injury surveillance, injury prevention initiatives, and the regulation of under-aged off-road vehicular usage. The paper presents the innovative approach to a high-fidelity motorcycle riding simulator based on VR (Virtual Reality)-visualization, equipped with a Gough-Stewart 6-DOF (Degrees of Freedom) motion platform. Such a solution integrates a real-time tension sensor system as a source for highly realistic motion cueing control as well as the servomotor integrated into the steering system. Tension forces are measured at four points on the mock-up chassis, allowing a comprehensive analysis of rider interaction during various maneuvers. The simulator is developed to simulate realistic riding scenarios with immersive motion and visual feedback, enhanced with the simulation of external influences—headwind. This paper presents results of a validation study—pilot experiments conducted to evaluate selected riding scenarios and validate the innovative simulator setup, focusing on force distribution and system responsiveness to support further research in motorcycle HMI (Human–Machine Interaction), rider behavior, and training. Upright-posture motorcycle crashes against steel safety barriers (SSBs) often result in severe upper-body injuries due to the sharp upper edge of the rail. While solutions for sliding crashes on curves, called a ‘motorcyclist-friendly barrier’, are already implemented in practice, protective measures for upright-posture impacts remain underdeveloped. This study systematically reviews patents and patent applications addressing upper guardrail protection for motorcyclists. We identified and analysed a small number of existing innovations aimed at mitigating the consequences of upright crashes. The selected solutions were evaluated according to their technical design, ease of installation, potential for recycling, environmental compatibility, and expected costs. Our comparative analysis reveals that while some patents or patent applications offer promising features, such as flexible caps, bent plates, or modular attachments, none comprehensively address all safety, environmental, and economic requirements. The findings provide a basis for further development of motorcyclist-friendly SSB designs and suggest specific criteria that should be included in future guidelines and standard updates. Full article

Mitigating traffic-related carbon emissions is pivotal for achieving carbon peaking targets and advancing sustainable urban development. This study employs spatial autocorrelation and high-low clustering analyses to analyze the spatial correlation and clustering patterns of urban road traffic carbon emissions in Shaanxi Province. The spatiotemporal evolution and structural impacts of emissions are quantified through a systematic framework, while the GTWR (Geographically Weighted Temporal Regression) model uncovers the multidimensional and heterogeneous driving mechanisms underlying carbon emissions. Findings reveal that road traffic CO2 emissions in Shaanxi exhibit an upward trajectory, with a temporal evolution marked by distinct phases: “stable growth—rapid increase—gradual decline”. Emission dynamics vary significantly across transport modes: private vehicles emerge as the primary emission source, taxi/motorcycle emissions remain relatively stable, and bus/electric vehicle emissions persist at low levels. Spatially, the province demonstrates a pronounced high-carbon spillover effect, with persistent high-value clusters concentrated in central Shaanxi and the northern region of Yan’an City, exhibiting spillover effects on adjacent urban areas. Notably, the spatial distribution of CO2 emissions has evolved significantly: a relatively balanced pattern across cities in 2010 transitioned to a pronounced “M”-shaped gradient along the north–south axis by 2015, stabilizing by 2020. The central urban cluster (Yan’an, Tongchuan, Xianyang, Baoji) initially formed a secondary low-carbon core, which later integrated into the regional emission gradient. By focusing on the micro-level dynamics of urban road traffic and its internal structural complexities—while incorporating built environment factors such as network layout, travel behavior, and infrastructure endowments—this study contributes novel insights to the transportation carbon emission literature, offering a robust framework for regional emission mitigation strategies. This study explores the dynamics of motorcycle tourism in rural areas and its potential contribution to sustainable and regenerative development. A bibliometric analysis of management-related publications was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection, focusing on topics such as tourism, motivation, rurality, and motorcycling. VOSviewer software (version 1.6.20) was employed to support this analysis. Based on the literature, a theoretical framework was developed, leading to four research hypotheses that aimed to empirically examine the relationships between cultural motivation, community interaction, type of accommodation, event location, and tourist behaviour. To test these hypotheses, structured questionnaires were distributed in person during rural motorcycling events in Portugal, yielding a valid sample of 233 respondents. The data were analysed using SPSS 28 software via statistical methods to reduce dimensionality and identify latent structures, chi-square tests, and logistic regression. The results confirmed all four hypotheses, highlighting the importance of cultural motivation for return intentions, community interaction for perceived authenticity, accommodation type for destination recommendations, and event location for overall satisfaction. The study also identifies gender-related differences and reinforces the value of immersive, co-created experiences in enhancing the competitiveness of rural destinations. This theoretical contribution supports the advancement of motorcycle tourism as a sustainable niche while offering practical guidance for inclusive and regenerative tourism planning. Full article

This research presents the results of different periods of T6 heat treatment (homogenization and artificial aging) for A356 aluminum alloy used in the fabrication of motorcycles. The samples were cast using gravity die casting, and industrial furnaces for T6 were used in the experiment. Two heat treatment conditions were used, with a total time of 7 h and 12 h, and the results were compared with the alloy without heat treatment. The effects of the reduction of treatment time on mechanical behavior were evaluated in terms of hardness, Charpy and tensile tests, as well as morphological analysis of fractures and microstructural behavior via optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, measurement of eutectic Si evolution, and XRD. Excellent mechanical properties were achieved with a treatment period of 7 h, which achieved a yield strength of 226.58 (±3.76) MPa, tensile strength limit of 264.78 (±4.27) MPa and elongation of 3.41 (±0.47) %. This is competitive with other cast alloys subjected to T6 heat treatment in longer treatment cycles. The peak of hardness and highest impact resistance was recorded for the sample treated for 12 h; however, in the impact test, there was no significant difference between the two experiments. Motorcycle horns are a dominant source of urban noise in many Southeast Asian cities, driven by high two-wheeler density and limited public transport infrastructure. Although automobiles have been in use for over a century, regulations governing horn design and volume control remain inadequate. This study investigates horn use behavior in Vietnamese urban traffic, identifying distinct acoustic patterns categorized as “attention” and “warning” signals. Measurements conducted in an anechoic chamber reveal that these patterns can increase sound pressure levels by up to 17 dB compared to standard horn use, with notable differences in frequency components. These levels often exceed the daytime noise thresholds recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), indicating potential risks for adverse health outcomes, such as elevated stress, hearing damage, sleep disturbance, and cardiovascular effects. The findings are contextualized within broader efforts to manage traffic noise in rapidly developing urban areas. Drawing parallels with studies on aircraft noise exposure in Japan, this study suggests that long-term exposure, rather than peak noise levels alone, plays a critical role in shaping community sensitivity. The study results support the need for updated noise regulations that address both the acoustic and perceptual dimensions of road traffic noise. Full article

The process of conceptualisation and prototyping of electric energy products is demanding due to the need for a multifaceted approach to product design. This task becomes even more complex during sustainable development, within which supporting techniques are sought. Energy conversion products such as electric motorcycles require special attention due to their impact on energy efficiency, environmental emissions, and operating and production costs. The research gap refers to the lack of a model to aggregate these aspects simultaneously. The objective of the research was to develop a CQ-LCA model (Cost–Quality–Life Cycle Assessment) supporting the creation of alternative product solutions and their evaluation in terms of the following: (i) environmental impact in the life cycle (LCA), (ii) quality, and (iii) production and/or purchase costs. The model was developed in seven main stages and tested for electric motorcycles and their ten prototypes, which are examples of modern products that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. Using the EDAS method, the quality of electric motorcycle prototypes was calculated. Then, by the LCA method according to ISO 14040, the CO2 emissions were estimated and modelled adequately to quality change. Next, by the parametric model based on the static method and the cost value function, including the nominal least squares method, the cost was estimated adequately to quality and environmental change. The model provided a qualitative and quantitative interpretation of electric motorcycle prototypes (CQ-LCA), allowing for the consideration of product characteristics, such as engine power, charging time, and battery capacity, but also environmental impacts and costs. The originality is the provision of a multi-aspect morphological analysis, after which different scenarios of product solutions. The model can be useful for various commonly used energy-converting products. Full article

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems are an essential part of RES systems to identify the registered owners of high-emitting vehicles. Recognizing number plates on L-vehicles (two-wheelers) with a standard ANPR system is challenging due to differences in size and placement across various categories. No ANPR system is designed explicitly for Category L vehicles, especially mopeds. In this work, we present an automatic number plate detection and recognition system for Category L vehicles (L-ANPR) specially developed to recognize L-vehicle number plates of various sizes and colors from different categories and countries. The cost-effective and energy efficient L-ANPR system was implemented on roads during remote emission measurement campaigns in multiple European cities and tested with hundreds of vehicles. The L-ANPR system recognizes Category L vehicles by calculating the size of each passing vehicle using photoelectric sensors. It can then trigger the L-ANPR detection system, which begins detecting license plates and recognizing license plate numbers with the L-ANPR recognizing system. The L-ANPR system’s license plate detection model is trained using thousands of images of license plates from various types of Category L vehicles across different countries, and the overall detection accuracy with test images exceeded 90%. The L-ANPR system’s character recognition is designed to identify large characters on standard number plates as well as smaller characters in various colors on small, moped license plates, achieving a recognition accuracy surpassing 70%. Progressive advancements in the global economy and technology have propelled human civilization forward; however, they have also inflicted significant harm on the global ecological environment. In the present era, electric vehicle (EV) technology is playing a vital role due to its environmentally friendly technological advances. However, widespread adoption of EVs has been hindered by their limited travel range, inadequate charging infrastructure, and high costs. This can be closely observed when we assess the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) among motorcycle taxi drivers, commonly called ‘pilots,’ in Goa, India. Motorcycle taxis are crucial in Goa’s transportation network, providing affordable, efficient, and door-to-door services, especially in regions with limited public transport options. However, the rising costs of petrol and vehicle maintenance have adversely affected the income of these pilots, prompting concerns about their willingness to adopt EVs. This study aims to analyze the factors prompting the behavioral intention to adopt EVs by motorcycle taxi pilots in Goa, India, focusing on six key determinants: charging infrastructure, effort expectancy, performance expectancy, price value, social influence, and satisfaction with incentive policies. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing stratified proportionate random sampling techniques to collect data from 242 motorcycle taxi pilots registered with the Goa State Government Transport Department. It was analyzed using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) through Smart-PLS 4.0 software. The research highlights that performance expectancy and price value are the potential motivators for the adoption of electric vehicles. These findings suggest that pilots are more likely to embrace EVs when they perceive tangible benefits in performance and find the cost reasonable in relation to the value offered. The results offer actionable insights for policymakers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders. These insights can guide strategic decisions and policy frameworks aimed at fostering a sustainable and user-centric transportation ecosystem. Full article

This study explores the relationship between the volumetric fraction of jute fiber and the mechanical properties of epoxy matrix composites for motorcycle fairings, highlighting the feasibility of jute fibers due to their strength and sustainability. Through a methodology that includes meticulous fiber cleaning, precise mold fabrication, and rigorous evaluation of tensile and impact properties, the study provides an innovative perspective in composite materials engineering. The results demonstrate that composites with jute fibers are viable for manufacturing fairings with excellent thermal and mechanical performance, opening new avenues for motorcycle manufacturing that prioritize both performance and environmental responsibility.
