Background/Objectives: Research across multiple disciplines has explored how nutrition is shaped by social isolation and feelings of loneliness, especially in the elderly population. Evidence from neuroscience highlights that loneliness may alter eating patterns, encouraging emotional eating or other compensatory food behaviors. Conversely, isolation from social contexts is often linked to a reduced variety of nutrient intake. This study set out to examine how psychosocial aspects, particularly social connectedness and feeling alone, relate to adherence to the Mediterranean diet among older adults residing in Sicily, southern Italy. Methods: Dietary habits of 883 adults were collected through food frequency questionnaires and assessed for adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Loneliness was measured through a targeted question from a standardized tool designed to capture depressive symptoms. Direct questions asked whether participants were engaged in social networks, such as family, friends and neighborhoods, or religious communities, in order to assess objective aloneness. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess associations between variables of interest. Results: After accounting for potential confounders, both loneliness and aloneness showed an association with stronger adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Specifically, individuals experiencing loneliness and aloneness were less likely to have high adherence to the Mediterranean diet (OR = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.15, 0.51, and OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.12, 0.54, respectively). Conclusions: These findings underscore the importance of fostering social engagement among older populations, who may particularly benefit from maintaining active social ties to support healthier eating behaviors. The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a widely distributed and highly adaptive small carnivore known by its generalist diet, which includes small mammals, invertebrates, and fruits. Despite its ecological relevance, how habitat heterogeneity affects its diet across the Mediterranean, a biodiversity hotspot shaped by long-term human disturbance, remains insufficiently synthesized. In this review, we synthesized and analyzed published studies that reported habitat-specific data on the red fox diet in the Mediterranean. Only 12 studies met the selection criteria, and no study directly compared two different habitats. The studied areas covered three dominant habitats: forests, scrublands (garrigue), and agroecosystems, and diet items were grouped in 7 categories: birds, carcasses, fruits, invertebrates, lagomorphs, small mammals, and reptiles. Overall diet composition varied significantly, with invertebrates and fruits being the most frequent diet items. In turn, lagomorphs and reptiles were the least frequent. In turn, diet composition varied little across habitats, indicating that diet variation follows specific local resource abundance regardless of habitat type. Despite the analytical limitations associated with the limited availability of habitat-explicit studies. The results highlight the pronounced dietary plasticity of the red fox and its capacity to integrate resource availability across heterogeneous Mediterranean landscape mosaics. This trophic adaptability and top predator role support various ecosystem functions such as controlling invertebrate and small mammal populations, dispersing seeds, and cycling nutrients, reinforcing the potential of the red fox as functional bioindicator in the Mediterranean. Therefore, sustainable land management, especially in agricultural areas, and restoration efforts for degraded areas should consider the beneficial roles of generalist carnivores like the red fox. Background/Objectives: The Mediterranean (Med)-style and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating patterns are evidence-based nutrition interventions given their protective effects from cardiometabolic diseases. Little is known about adherence to each eating pattern among the Hispanic/Latine population. The objective of this cross-sectional analysis is to assess the alignment of reported dietary intakes of Hispanic/Latine adults to Med-style and DASH eating patterns and associations with clinical outcomes for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Methods: A sample of 5406 Hispanic/Latine adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2018) was utilized. Alignment to the Med-style and DASH eating patterns was calculated by scoring indices tailored for overconsumption in the United States. Multiple linear regression determined associations between each respective eating pattern and clinical outcomes. Results: Hispanic/Latine adults in the United States have a mean DASH score of 11.2 and a Med-style score of 8.4 (out of 100), indicating poor alignment. Adjusted regression analysis showed increased alignment of both eating patterns was associated with a decrease in average blood pressure (DASH ꞵ = −0.095, p = <0.0001; Med-style: ꞵ = −0.128, p = 0.0002). Greater adherence to a Med-style eating pattern score was also associated with improved average hemoglobin A1c (ꞵ −0.007, p = 0.017). Neither diet pattern score was associated with total cholesterol. Conclusions: Evidence of low alignment to the Med-style and DASH eating patterns among Hispanic/Latine populations exacerbates the need for future work to understand cultural tailoring of evidence-based eating patterns to increase adherence and support improved cardiometabolic outcomes. Climate fluctuations are expected to drive a decline in the growth of many conifer and broadleaf species, especially in the Mediterranean region, where these species grow at or very near the southern limits of their distribution. Such trends have important implications not only for forest productivity but also for plant diversity, as shifts in species performance may alter competitive interactions and long-term community composition. Using tree-ring data sourced from two Abies cephalonica stands with different elevation in Mount Parnassus in Central Greece, we evaluate the growth responses of the species to climatic variability employing a dendroecological approach. We hypothesize that radial growth at higher elevations is more strongly influenced by climate variability than at lower elevations. Despite the moderate to relatively good common signal indicated by the expressed population signal (EPS: 0.645 for the high-altitude stand and 0.782 for the low-altitude stand), the chronologies for both sites preserve crucial stand-level growth patterns, providing an important basis for ecological insights. The calculation of the Average Tree-Ring Width Index (ARWI) for both sites revealed that fir in both altitudes exhibited a decline in growth rates from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, followed by a general recovery and increase throughout the late 1990s. They also both experienced a significant decline in growth between approximately 2018 and 2022. The best-fit model for annual ring-width variation at lower elevations was a simple autoregressive model of order one (AR1), where growth was driven exclusively by the previous year’s growth (p < 0.001). At the higher elevation, a more complex model emerged: while previous year’s growth remained significant (p < 0.001), other variables such as maximum growing season temperature (p = 0.041), annual temperature (inverse effect, p = 0.039), annual precipitation (p = 0.017), and evapotranspiration (p = 0.039) also had a statistically significant impact on tree growth. Our results emphasize the prominent role of carry-over effects in shaping their annual growth patterns. Full article

Background/Objectives: Hypertension control remains a global challenge. Evidence on the association between adherence to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and blood pressure (BP) control in older Mediterranean populations is limited. We aimed to assess this association in Spanish older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis included 371 participants (69 ± 9 years). Dietary intake was assessed using a validated 146-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and DASH diet adherence was categorized as low, medium, or high. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine associations with BP control. Results: Among participants with hypertension (n = 218), 52.8% achieved adequate BP control and consumed significantly more low-fat dairy products (+56%) and less sodium (−11%) than those with uncontrolled BP. The low adherence group had lower proportion of participants with controlled BP (21%) than the medium and high adherence groups (36% and 39%, respectively) (p < 0.05). Across increasing DASH diet adherence categories, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were 4–5 mmHg and 3–4 mmHg lower, respectively. Medium adherence to the DASH diet was independently associated with substantially lower odds of uncontrolled BP (OR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.16–0.82; p = 0.015). High adherence showed a similar magnitude of association but did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: In this cohort of older Spanish adults, moderate adherence to the DASH diet was associated with meaningful improvements in BP control, suggesting that achievable, intermediate levels of DASH diet adherence may be sufficient to improve hypertension management in real-world settings. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm causality and long-term cardiovascular benefits. Full article

The rapid evolution of insecticide resistance in Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) threatens effective pest management in key crops. This study characterized B. tabaci populations from cotton and tomato fields in Kashgar (September–October 2024) using mtCOI-RFLP for cryptic species identification, leaf-dip bioassays with 13 insecticides, and PCR detection of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). All analyzed individuals belonged to the Mediterranean (MED) cryptic species. Extreme resistance was observed to imidacloprid (RR = 320.65) and pyridaben (RR = 331.29), while nitenpyram (RR = 1.77) and the emamectin benzoate–chlorantraniliprole mixture (RR = 2.13) remained effective. TYLCV was detected in 97.5% of adults from tomato greenhouses. These findings provide a concise assessment of resistance status, species identification, and virus prevalence in B. tabaci, informing sustainable management strategies in cotton and tomato production. Land abandonment and recurrent wildfires are major drivers of landscape transformation in Mediterranean Europe, creating favorable conditions for the spread of non-native invasive woody species. Among these, Australian wattles (genus Acacia) are particularly widespread and problematic in Portugal. This work analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of Acacia spp. in two municipalities of central Portugal (Sertã and Pedrógão-Grande) by combining multitemporal photointerpretation of aerial imagery (2004–2021), generalized additive models (GAMs), and local perception surveys. Results reveal a 417% increase in occupied area over the last two decades. Modeling outcomes indicate a temporal shift in invasion drivers: from an establishment phase (2004–2010), mainly constrained by altitude and proximity to primary introduction sites, to a disturbance-driven expansion phase (2010–2021), influenced by fire recurrence, slope, and land-use context. Spatial clustering persisted throughout, underscoring the role of founder populations. Surveys confirmed high public awareness of Acacia invasiveness and identified abandonment and wildfire as the main perceived triggers of spread. By integrating ecological and social dimensions, this study provides a socioecological perspective on Acacia spp. expansion in Mediterranean rural landscapes and highlights the urgent need for integrated, landscape-scale management strategies. Background: Short tandem repeats (STRs) are highly variable sequences present along the human genome, including the Y-chromosome. Y-STRs are exclusive to males, and the haplotypes they define are informative. Objectives: Twenty-six Y-STR loci were genotyped in 252 males from Northern Portugal to characterise Y-chromosome genetic variation using the Investigator Argus Y28 QS Kit. Methods: The kit mentioned was used to amplify male DNA samples, and capillary electrophoresis was used to analyze the fragments. Forensic parameters and haplotype diversity were computed, and samples’ haplogroups were predicted. A multidimensional scaling (MDS) plot was used to graphically represent the RST genetic distances, including reference populations. Results: A total of 250 different haplotypes were observed, including 248 unique ones, yielding a very high haplotype diversity (HD = 0.999) and discriminatory power (DP = 0.992). Haplogroup analysis indicated a predominance of R1b (58.7%), followed by E1b1b, I and J, pointing to a population history shaped by Mediterranean and North African gene flow. Comparative analysis between Portugal and 5 other populations showed greater genetic affinity with Spain and Italy, while revealing marked differentiation from Greece, Morocco, and former Portuguese colonies. Conclusions: The results confirm that the Northern Portuguese Population exhibits high Y-STR variability and robust forensic resolution. The dataset was submitted to the YHRD database, enhancing the representation of the Portuguese population and underscoring the value of the 26 locus panel for applications in forensic science, genealogy, and population genetics. Betanodavirus infection poses a significant threat to marine fish species in the Mediterranean, affecting both aquaculture and wild populations. Despite increasing evidence of viral circulation in farmed and wild fish, data on natural outbreaks in wild groupers remain limited. This study investigated mortality episodes in wild dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) within two marine protected areas (MPAs): Portofino MPA (Liguria, Italy) and Larvotto MPA (Principality of Monaco) during 2018–2019. Pathological examinations and virological diagnostics confirmed that the causative agents were betanodavirus strains belonging to the RGNNV genotype. Phylogenetic analyses revealed high genetic similarity among viral strains detected at geographically distant sites and across host species, suggesting potential regional connectivity mediated by mobile vectors or environmental transport. Seawater temperature analysis indicated that extreme and prolonged high-water temperatures were prodromal and coincided with observed outbreaks, supporting a role for thermal stress in triggering outbreak onsets. These findings highlight the susceptibility of wild dusky grouper populations to betanodavirus and underscore the interplay between host behavior, environmental conditions, and pathogen dynamics. The study emphasizes the importance of integrated health surveillance strategies within and around MPAs to monitor fish health and environmental parameters, thereby conserving wild fish populations and biodiversity. Background: Metabolic syndrome, a clinical condition defined by central obesity, impaired glucose regulation, elevated blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol across the lifespan, is now a major public health issue typically managed with lifestyle, behavioral, and dietary recommendations. However, “one-size-fits-all” recommendations often yield modest, heterogeneous responses and poor long-term adherence, creating a clinical need for more targeted and implementable preventive and therapeutic strategies. Objective: To synthesize evidence on how the gut microbiome can inform precision nutrition and exercise approaches for metabolic syndrome prevention and management, and to evaluate readiness for clinical translation. Key findings: The gut microbiome may influence cardiometabolic risk through microbe-derived metabolites and pathways involving short-chain fatty acids, bile acid signaling, gut barrier integrity, and low-grade systemic inflammation. Diet quality (e.g., Mediterranean-style patterns, higher fermentable fiber, or lower ultra-processed food intake) consistently relates to more favorable microbial functions, and intervention studies show that high-fiber/prebiotic strategies can improve glycemic control alongside microbiome shifts. Physical exercise can also modulate microbial diversity and metabolic outputs, although effects are typically subtle and may depend on baseline adiposity and sustained adherence. Emerging “microbiome-informed” personalization, especially algorithms predicting postprandial glycemic responses, has improved short-term glycemic outcomes compared with standard advice in controlled trials. Targeted microbiome-directed approaches (e.g., Akkermansia muciniphila-based supplementation and fecal microbiota transplantation) provide proof-of-concept signals, but durability and scalability remain key limitations. Conclusions: Microbiome-informed personalization is a promising next step beyond generic guidelines, with potential to improve adherence and durable metabolic outcomes. Clinical implementation will require standardized measurement, rigorous external validation on clinically meaningful endpoints, interpretable decision support, and equity-focused evaluation across diverse populations. Background/Objectives: Emotional eating refers to the tendency to eat in response to emotions rather than physiological hunger and has been associated with changes in food choices and difficulties in dietary self-regulation. Whether emotional eating influences adherence to the Mediterranean diet remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between emotional eating and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 245 adults completed the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ) and the MEDI-LITE questionnaire to assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Participants were classified into three emotional eating categories (NO EE, LEE, EE) and stratified by BMI (normal weight vs. overweight). Results: Higher EEQ scores were associated with greater disinhibition, stronger food preferences, and a higher sense of guilt in both BMI categories. However, adherence to the Mediterranean diet did not differ significantly across emotional eating groups, and overall MEDI-LITE scores were low in the entire sample. Correlations between emotional eating subscales and specific food groups were weak and did not show a consistent pattern. Conclusions: Emotional eating was associated with psychological and behavioral aspects of eating but was not related to adherence to the Mediterranean diet in this population. The uniformly low adherence to the Mediterranean diet may have attenuated potential associations. Further studies using more detailed dietary assessment tools and longitudinal designs are needed to clarify how emotional eating influences food choices over time. Full article

Reports of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in the Mediterranean Sea attract strong scientific and public attention but are frequently based on limited or unverified evidence. This study evaluates the reliability of citizen-science imagery for shark species identification using a comparative morphological framework. A recent Adriatic record was used as a representative case to demonstrate the application of diagnostic criteria for distinguishing lamnid sharks. Dentition and external morphological traits were compared with published reference material and field guides. The analysis indicates that the absence of lateral cusplets and overall dental morphology are inconsistent with C. carcharias, confirming the specimen as a porbeagle (Lamna nasus). Beyond this case, the findings emphasize the importance of expert validation, standardized morphological criteria, and proper reporting for protected species. Establishing clear validation protocols can ensure that citizen-science observations strengthen rather than distort the scientific understanding of Mediterranean shark populations. Full article

Brown algae of the Cystoseira genus are recognized as valuable sources of bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides. Within the framework of current restoration efforts regarding damaged Ericaria amentacea populations in the Mediterranean Sea, the valorization of apices derived from ex situ cultivation waste represents a sustainable opportunity for industrial and biomedical applications. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was extracted from E. amentacea apex by-products using a hydrothermal–alkaline method and subsequently chemically characterized. FTIR analysis showed O-H, C-H, and COO- stretching compatible with commercial alginates, while 1H-NMR spectroscopy indicated high β-D-mannuronic acid content, with an M/G ratio of 2.33. The extracted SA displayed a molecular weight of 1 × 104 g/mol and a polydispersity index of 3.5. The bioactive properties of the SA extract were investigated in chemico and in vitro. SA exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity, showing significant DPPH and nitric oxide-radical-scavenging capacity. Furthermore, SA demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect in LPS-stimulated macrophages through modulation of several inflammatory mediators (i.e., IL-6, IL-8/CXCL5, MCP-1, and TNF-α). In particular, SA promoted a striking iNOS gene expression inhibition, which, paired with its direct NO-scavenging ability, paves the way for future pharmacological use of E. amentacea derivatives, particularly if sustainably obtained from restoration activity waste. Athamanta L. is a small genus of the Apiaceae family, comprising only sixteen species and subspecies, which are distributed in the Canary Islands, Central Europe, and the Mediterranean basin. Background/Objectives: Since the time of Dioscurides, the species of this genus have been reported to have had several ethnopharmacological activities, and some of them are also used currently. Athamanta sicula L., growing in Italy, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, is the only species of this genus present in Sicily. To further explore the phytochemical profile and biological properties of this species, the present study focused on the essential oil (EO) extracted from the aerial parts of wild A. sicula populations collected in central Sicily. Methods: The chemical composition of the EO, obtained by hydrodistillation, was determined by GC–MS analysis. The presence of myristicin was confirmed by isolation and by 1H-NMR spectroscopic characterization. Results: The EO and its main constituents have been tested for possible antimicrobial properties against several bacterial strains, showing MIC values in the of 15–30 mg/mL range, and the mechanism of action was further investigated, revealing membrane-targeting effects consistent with outer membrane permeabilization. In addition, antibiofilm activity (with up to ~80% inhibition of biofilm formation at sub-MICs), antioxidant potential (demonstrating dose-dependent radical scavenging activity), and biocompatibility with eukaryotic cells were assessed to provide a comprehensive pharmacological profile of A. sicula EO. Specifically, the most abundant constituent was myristicin (62.2%), the principal representative of the phenylpropanoid class (64.4%). Hydrocarbon monoterpenes represented the second class of the EO (27.4%), with β-phellandrene (12.2%) as the main compound. Conclusions: Myristicin emerged as the key contributor to the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of the EO. The obtained results highlight the relevance of A. sicula EO as a myristicin-rich essential oil with notable in vitro biological activity. Full article

Background/Objectives: Even with solid proof of its benefits for cardiovascular health and metabolism, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) in Spain has noticeably declined in recent years. The socioeconomic changes occurring in recent decades have prompted shifts in cooking habits and in how food is socially experienced, particularly among children and adolescents. The MD is more than just food: it is a cultural tradition and a lifestyle, rich in food and cooking skills, and food wisdom passed down over generations. When these practices fade, it affects both health and the environment, making them vital components in strengthening support for food knowledge, cooking abilities, and a healthier lifestyle. Considering these shifting dietary patterns and the growing need for targeted educational strategies, the present study aimed to investigate the association between cooking skills, MD-related health literacy, and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet across different developmental stages: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in a sample of the Spanish population. Additionally, a secondary objective was to identify potential critical windows for intervention based on the strength of these associations. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 832 Spanish participants grouped by age: children and early adolescents (n = 408), older adolescents (n = 136), and adults (n = 288). Cooking skills were assessed using CooC11 for children and FCSk for older groups. Adults also completed Lit_MEDiet to assess MD-related health literacy. Adherence was measured with KIDMED (children/adolescents) and MEDAS (adults). Spearman correlations and standardized linear regressions were used. All statistical tests were two-sided, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: In children, no significant association was found between cooking skills (CooC11) and KIDMED scores (β = 0.008; p = 0.875). Among adolescents, a strong positive association emerged between FCSk and KIDMED (β = 0.313; p < 0.001; ρ = 0.371), indicating a large, standardized effect and suggesting that this stage is particularly sensitive to food skills. In adults (18+), both food and cooking skills (FCSk) (β = 0.189; p = 0.001) and MD-related health literacy (Lit_MEDiet) (β = 0.187; p = 0.004) were moderately associated with MEDAS scores. Conclusions: These findings suggest that mid-adolescence could represent a favourable developmental window where food skills may hold potential to influence positive dietary behaviours. Regarding adults, the results indicate that combining practical and educational components appears to beneficial for dietary quality. Overall, this study supports the relevance of age-tailored public health strategies to potentially enhance long-term adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. Full article
