UNS S41003 is a low-cost, low-carbon ferritic stainless steel that exhibits moderate corrosion resistance but limited mechanical performance. This study evaluates the electrochemical behavior of untreated and thermomechanically treated UNS S41003 samples. Corrosion tests were conducted in acidic electrolytes with varying pH to simulate aggressive environments relevant to industrial and structural applications where exposure to acidic media and corrosive pollutants occurs. Potentiodynamic polarization curves for all samples displayed passive regions typically associated with protective oxide film formation; however, localized pitting corrosion was detected post-test. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated a marked decrease in corrosion resistance as pH decreased. The corrosion resistance of the treated alloy remained comparable to that of the untreated condition, indicating that thermomechanical processing did not detrimentally affect passivity or corrosion performance under the tested conditions. The literature suggests that the applied treatment enhances mechanical properties, supporting the potential use of this alloy in structural components subjected to acidic environments requiring a balance of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. The rapid rise of short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels has transformed digital engagement by promoting fragmented, high-tempo swiping behaviors and intense sensory stimulation. While these platforms dominate daily use, their impact on higher-order cognition remains underexplored. This study provides preliminary behavioral experimental evidence that even brief exposure to short-form video environments may be associated with reduced cue-based task preparation, a specific subcomponent of proactive cognitive flexibility. In a randomized between-subjects design, participants (N = 72) viewed either 30 min of TikTok-style content, a neutral documentary, or no video (passive control), followed by a task-switching paradigm with manipulated cue–target intervals (CTIs). As expected, the documentary and control group exhibited significant preparation benefits at longer CTIs, reflected in reduced switching costs—consistent with effective anticipatory task-set updating. In contrast, the short video group failed to leverage extended preparation time, indicating a selective disruption of goal-driven processing. Notably, performance at short CTIs did not differ across groups, reinforcing the interpretation that reactive control remained intact, while proactive preparation was selectively impaired. These findings link habitual “swiping” to disrupted task-switching efficiency—a phenomenon summarized as swiping disrupts switching. These findings suggest that short-form video exposure may temporarily bias attentional regulation toward stimulus-driven reactivity, thereby undermining anticipatory cognitive control. Given the widespread use of short-form video platforms—especially among young adults—these results underscore the need to better understand how media design features interact with cognitive control systems. Smartphones have revolutionized our daily lives, becoming portable pocket computers with easy internet access. India, the second-highest smartphone and internet user, experienced a significant rise in smartphone usage between 2013 and 2024. Prolonged smartphone use, exceeding 20 min at a time, can lead to physical and mental health issues, including psychophysiological disorders. Digital devices and their extended exposure to blue light cause digital eyestrain, sleep disorders and visual-related problems. This research examines the impact of 1 h smartphone usage on visual fatigue among young Indian adults. A portable, low-cost system has been developed to measure visual activity to address this. The developed visual activity measurement system measures blink rate, inter-blink interval, and pupil diameter. Measured eye activity was recorded during 1 h smartphone usage of e-book reading, video watching, and social-media reels (short videos). Social media reels show increased screen variations, affecting pupil dilation and reducing blink rate due to continuous screen brightness and intensity changes. This reduction in blink rate and increase in inter-blink interval or pupil dilation could lead to visual fatigue. Full article

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate Achilles tendon ruptures (ATR) in NHL players and the effects on return to play and player performance metrics. The incidence, mechanism of injury, management strategy, return to play (RTP), and post-injury were assessed from official online sports databases. Methods: A retrospective review of NHL players who sustained a partial or complete tear of the Achilles tendon from 2008 to 2024 was performed. Data were collected from NHL injury databases and media reports, and included player demographics, injury mechanism, treatment, and post-injury performance metrics. A Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare pre-injury and post-injury performance metrics, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Here, 15 NHL players with a mean age of 27.8 years were identified, with a prevalence rate of 0.125 injuries per 10,000 athletic exposures. Overall, 73.3% of ATRs were non-contact in nature, with 60.0% of ATRs occurring during off-season training. Fourteen players were managed with non-operative treatment, with no re-ruptures reported. The RTP rate was 93.3%, with players missing a mean number of 45.7 games. However, there was a deterioration in post-injury performance metrics, including games played per season, plus/minus rating, and time on ice per game post-injury. Conclusions: This study found that Achilles tendon ruptures are an uncommon injury in NHL players, with a prevalence rate of 0.125 injuries per 10,000 athletic exposures. A high RTP rate of 93.3% was observed in this cohort. However, there was a deterioration in post-injury performance metrics, including games played per season, plus/minus rating, and time on ice per game post-injury, highlighting the potential devastating sequelae of ATRs in elite NHL athletes. Abiotic processes have ramifications in wastewater treatment, in situ degradation of organic matter, and cycling of nutrients in wetland ecosystems. Experiments were conducted to investigate abiotic oxidation of organic compounds (lactate) as a function of electron acceptors (ferric citrate and hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), media composition, and pH under anaerobic conditions, using sodium bicarbonate as the buffering agent. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was used as a proxy for the oxidation of substrates. HFO media generated more DIC compared to ferric citrate containing media. Light and pH had major roles in the oxidation of lactate in the presence of ferric iron. Under dark conditions in the presence or absence of Fe(III), the DIC produced was low in all pH conditions. Inhibition of DIC production was also observed upon photo exposure when Fe (III) was absent. Isotopically, the system showed initial mixing between the bicarbonate and the carbon dioxide produced from oxidation later being dominated by carbon isotope value of lactate used. These redox conditions align with previous studies suggesting cleavage of organic compounds by hydroxyl radicals. The slower redox processes observed here, compared to previous studies, could be due to the scavenging effect of chloride ion on the hydroxyl radical. Full article

Background/Objectives: Digital food-related videos significantly influence cravings, appetite, and weight outcomes; however, the dynamic neural mechanisms underlying appetite fluctuations during naturalistic viewing remain unclear. This study aimed to identify neural activity patterns associated with moment-to-moment appetite changes during naturalistic food-cue video viewing and to examine their relationships with cravings and weight-related outcomes. Methods: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 58 healthy female participants as they viewed naturalistic food-cue videos. Participants concurrently provided continuous ratings of their appetite levels throughout video viewing. Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM), combined with machine learning regression techniques, was employed to identify distinct neural states reflecting dynamic appetite fluctuations. Findings were independently validated using a shorter-duration food-cue video viewing task. Results: Distinct neural states characterized by heightened activation in default mode and frontoparietal networks consistently corresponded with increases in appetite ratings. Importantly, the higher expression of these appetite-related neural states correlated positively with participants’ Body Mass Index (BMI) and post-viewing food cravings. Furthermore, these neural states mediated the relationship between BMI and food craving levels. Longitudinal analyses revealed that the expression levels of appetite-related neural states predicted participants’ BMI trajectories over a subsequent six-month period. Participants experiencing BMI increases exhibited a significantly greater expression of these neural states compared to those whose BMI remained stable. Conclusions: Our findings elucidate how digital food cues dynamically modulate neural processes associated with appetite. These neural markers may serve as early indicators of obesity risk, offering valuable insights into the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms linking everyday media exposure to food cravings and weight management. With the ongoing advancement of industrialization and rapid urbanization, the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has increased significantly. As key precursors of PM2.5 and ozone formation, VOCs pose a growing threat to the health of ecosystems. Due to their complex and dynamic transformation processes across air, water, and soil media, the ecological risks associated with VOCs have attracted increasing attention from both the scientific community and policy-makers. This study systematically reviews the core literature on the ecological impacts of VOCs published between 2005 and 2024, based on data from the Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. Utilizing three bibliometric tools (CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix), we conducted a comprehensive visual analysis, constructing knowledge maps from multiple perspectives, including research trends, international collaboration, keyword evolution, and author–institution co-occurrence networks. The results reveal a rapid growth in the ecological impact of VOCs (EIVOCs), with an average annual increase exceeding 11% since 2013. Key research themes include source apportionment of air pollutants, ecotoxicological effects, biological response mechanisms, and health risk assessment. China, the United States, and Germany have emerged as leading contributors in this field, with China showing a remarkable surge in research activity in recent years. Keyword co-occurrence and burst analyses highlight “air pollution”, “exposure”, “health”, and “source apportionment” as major research hotspots. However, challenges remain in areas such as ecosystem functional responses, the integration of multimedia pollution pathways, and interdisciplinary coordination mechanisms. There is an urgent need to enhance monitoring technology integration, develop robust ecological risk assessment frameworks, and improve predictive modeling capabilities under climate change scenarios. This study provides scientific insights and theoretical support for the development of future environmental protection policies and comprehensive VOCs management strategies. Full article

Allergy is recognized as a public health problem with pandemic consequences and is estimated to affect more than 50% of Europeans in 2025. Prebiotic and probiotic food implementation has recently emerged as an alternative strategy to promote immunomodulatory beneficial effects in allergic patients. Among prebiotics, Phaeophyceae algae represent a niche of research with enormous possibilities. The present study aims to evaluate the in vitro prebiotic potential of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus, Macrocystis pyrifera, and Undaria pinnatifida algae, to promote the growth of Limosilactobacillus reuteri and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG as probiotic bacteria added to the formulation of a novel yogurt. Concentrations of fucoidan of 100 and 2000 µg/mL were added to reference growth media and kinetic growth curves for both microorganisms were fitted to the Gompertz equation. Optimized prebiotic conditions for fucoidan were selected to validate in vitro results by means of the formulation of a novel fermented prebiotic yogurt. Conventional yogurts (including Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subs. bulgaricus) were formulated with the different fucoidans, and production batches were prepared for L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri. Increased L. reuteri and L. rhamnosus populations in 1.7–2.2 log10 cycles just after 48 h of in vitro exposure were detected in fucoidan supplemented yogurt. M. pyrifera and U. pinnatifida fucoidans were the most effective ones (500 µg/mL) promoting probiotic growth in new formulated yogurts (during the complete shelf life of products, 28 days). Diet supplementation with fucoidan can be proposed as a strategy to modulate beneficial microbiota against allergy. Full article

The developmental processes of microglia follow a general pattern, from immature amoeboid (activated) cells to fully ramified (inactivated) surveilling microglia. However, little is known about the mechanisms controlling the transition of microglia from an activated to an inactivated state during brain development. Due to the complexity of microenvironmentally dynamic changes during neuronal differentiation, interactions between developing nerve cells and microglia might be involved in this process. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-released particles that serve as mediators of cellular crosstalk and regulation. Using neural progenitor cells (NPCs) and a long-term neuron culture system, we found that EVs derived from NPCs or developing neurons possessed differential capacity on the induction of microglial activation. The exposure of microglia to NPC- or immature neuron (DIV7)-derived EVs resulted in the higher expression of protein and mRNA of multiple inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), when compared with mature neuron-derived EVs. Exploration of the intracellular signaling pathways revealed that MAPK signaling, IκBα phosphorylation/degradation, and NF-κB p65 nuclear translocation were strongly induced in microglia treated with NPC- or immature neuron-derived EVs. Using a pharmacological approach, we further demonstrate that Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7-mediated activation of NF-κB and MAPK signaling cascades contribute to EV-elicited microglial activation. Additionally, the application of conditioned media derived from microglia treated with NPC- or immature neuron-derived EVs is found to promote the survival of late-developing dopaminergic neurons. Thus, our results highlight a novel mechanism used by NPCs and developing neurons to modulate the developmental phases and functions of microglia through EV secretion. Full article

As digital marketing becomes more targeted and interactive, it is more critical to understand how young audiences perceive and react to compelling content. This research examines the extent to which consumer responses are affected by neuromarketing knowledge, interest, and screen-based advert exposure for middle school kids. Based on responses from 244 Greek adolescents aged 12–15 years, Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to investigate direct and mediated influences on purchase intentions with advertisement skepticism and persuasion knowledge as mediating factors. Results indicate that exposure and recognition have a significant influence on intentions both by means of cognitive as well as attitudinal processes, while interest only increases skepticism but not interaction. Multi-group analysis yielded significant differences according to age and experience, referring to the development path of advertising literacy. The results provide strong cues to educators, policymakers, and marketers who want to develop media-critical competencies among adolescents in an ever-shaping digital age. Full article

Background: Since the introduction of Pasteur’s rabies vaccine in 1885, rabies prophylaxis and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) have been widely administered globally under the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO). However, 124 documented cases of PEP failure had been reported worldwide between 1980 and 2023. Additionally, sporadic media reports from China showed occasional PEP failures between 2017 and 2024. Rabies remains a serious public health problem in over 150 countries and regions. Methods: In this review, we summarize PEP procedures recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the WHO. We also analyze potential contributing factors to PEP failure, propose a concept of circulating antibodies, and discuss their roles in PEP. Furthermore, we summarize key guidelines for clinical trial design from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and China’s Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE), as well as the latest developments in monoclonal antibody (cocktail) therapies. Results: Adherence to core PEP practices, such as wound cleansing, infiltration of wounds with immunoglobulin (mAbs), and administration of vaccines, and broader societal involvement are crucial for preventing rabies infection in most cases. For high-risk exposures or immunocompromised individuals, the provision of circulating antibodies through high-dose human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) or mAbs is of utmost importance for preventing PEP failure. Conclusions: Early, high-concentration circulating antibodies are important for preventing PEP failure. Addressing the global issue of rabies requires involvement of the entire society. Only through collective efforts can we tackle this neglected disease and achieve WHO’s goal of “zero by 30”. Full article

Public attitudes toward immigration in Spain are influenced by media narratives, individual traits, and emotional responses. This study examines how portrayals of Arab and African immigrants may be associated with emotional and attitudinal variation. We address three questions: (1) How are different types of media coverage and social environments linked to emotional reactions? (2) What emotions are most frequently associated with these portrayals? and (3) How do political orientation and media exposure relate to changes in perception? A pre/post media exposure survey was conducted with 130 Spanish university students. Machine learning models (decision tree, random forest, and support vector machine) were used to classify attitudes and identify predictive features. Emotional variables such as fear and happiness, as well as perceptions of media clarity and bias, emerged as key features in classification models. Political orientation and prior media experience were also linked to variation in responses. These findings suggest that emotional and contextual factors may be relevant in understanding public perceptions of immigration. The use of interpretable models contributes to a nuanced analysis of media influence and highlights the value of transparent computational approaches in migration research. Full article

Studies commonly measure the effects of media narratives on the self immediately following exposure. We explored whether these effects on viewers’ self-esteem, self-efficacy and motivation are confined to the immediate post-exposure period and examined how they are related to the audience’s identification with the protagonist. In Study 1, participants watched movie clips that included inspiring narratives depicting protagonists who succeeded in accomplishing their goals. Implicit self-esteem was significantly higher immediately after watching than after a short break. Unexpectedly, identification was positively correlated only with delayed self-esteem. In Study 2 we changed the control condition and added explicit measures. The reduction in implicit self-esteem between the two measurement times was replicated in the no-treatment control group. Moreover, self-efficacy and motivation were higher than in the control group and were stable over time, and identification was positively related only to delayed implicit self-esteem and motivation. We conclude that the effect of inspiring narratives on the self extends beyond the immediate time of exposure, and identification with the characters contributes to this persistent effect. The findings are explained by theories of contrast and assimilation, identification and inspiring narratives. Full article

Modern industrial ecosystems, particularly those embracing Industry 4.0, increasingly depend on coherent optical networks operating at 400 Gbps and beyond. These high-capacity infrastructures, coupled with advanced digital signal processing and phase-sensitive detection, enable real-time data exchange for automated manufacturing, robotics, and interconnected factory systems. However, they introduce multilayer security challenges—ranging from hardware synchronization gaps to protocol overhead manipulation. Moreover, the rise of large-scale quantum computing intensifies these threats by potentially breaking classical key exchange protocols and enabling the future decryption of stored ciphertext. In this paper, we present a systematic vulnerability analysis of coherent optical networks that use OTU4 framing, Media Access Control Security (MACsec), and 400G ZR+ transceivers. Guided by established risk assessment methodologies, we uncover critical weaknesses affecting management plane interfaces (e.g., MDIO and I2C) and overhead fields (e.g., Trail Trace Identifier, Bit Interleaved Parity). To mitigate these risks while preserving the robust data throughput and low-latency demands of industrial automation, we propose a post-quantum security framework that merges spectral phase masking with multi-homodyne coherent detection, strengthened by quantum key distribution for key management. This layered approach maintains backward compatibility with existing infrastructure and ensures forward secrecy against quantum-enabled adversaries. The evaluation results show a substantial reduction in exposure to timing-based exploits, overhead field abuses, and cryptographic compromise. By integrating quantum-safe measures at the optical layer, our solution provides a future-proof roadmap for network operators, hardware vendors, and Industry 4.0 stakeholders tasked with safeguarding next-generation manufacturing and engineering processes. Social Media Exposure and Muscle Dysmorphia Risk in Young German Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Survey with Machine-Learning Insights Using the MDDI-1

Background and Objectives: Excessive social media use is repeatedly linked to negative body image outcomes, yet its association with muscle dysmorphia, especially in athletic youth, remains underexplored. We investigated how social media exposure, comparison behavior, and platform engagement relate to muscle dysmorphia symptomatology in young German athletes. Materials and Methods: An anonymous, web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted (July–October 2024) of 540 individuals (45% female; mean age = 24.6 ± 5.3 years; 79% ≥ 3 h sport/week) recruited via Instagram. The questionnaire comprised demographics, sport type, detailed social media usage metrics, and the validated German Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI-1, 15 items). Correlations (Spearman’s ρ, Kendall’s τ) were calculated; multivariate importance was probed with classification-and-regression trees and CatBoost gradient boosting, interpreted via SHAP values. Results: Median daily social media time was 76 min (IQR 55–110). Participants who spent ≥ 60 min per day on social media showed higher MDDI scores (mean 38 ± 7 vs. 35 ± 6; p = 0.010). The strongest bivariate link emerged between perceived social media-induced body dissatisfaction and felt pressure to attain a specific body composition (Spearman ρ = 0.748, Kendall τ = 0.672, p < 0.001). A CatBoost gradient-boosting model out-performed linear regression in predicting elevated MDDI. The three most influential features (via SHAP values) were daily social media time, frequency of comparison with fitness influencers, and frequency of “likes”-seeking behavior. Conclusions: Intensive social media exposure substantially heightens muscle dysmorphia risk in young German athletes. Machine-learning interpretation corroborates time on social media and influencer comparisons as primary drivers. Interventions should combine social media literacy training with sport-specific psychoeducation to mitigate maladaptive comparison cycles and prevent downstream eating disorder pathology. Longitudinal research is warranted to clarify causal pathways and to test targeted digital media interventions. Full article
