This paper investigates the vibration suppression of cantilevered beams using nonlinear shunted piezoelectric circuits. The beam’s inertia and geometric nonlinearities are considered. A quadratic nonlinear piezoelectric capacitance is used such that there exists a two-to-one internal resonance between the mechanical and electrical modes. The internal resonance coupling is exploited to trigger the saturation phenomenon such that the beam’s vibration reaches a limit beyond an excitation amplitude threshold. The equations governing the nonlinear vibration of the beam coupled with the shunt circuit are derived, and modal analysis is used to obtain a system of two nonlinearly coupled modal equations. The equations are then numerically integrated to obtain the results. A parametric study is performed to assess the significance of system parameters, such as the location of the piezoelectric patch, its size, circuit resistance, and nonlinear gain, on the effectiveness of vibration suppression. The results show that the proposed design effectively suppresses the linear and nonlinear vibrations of the beam. The proposed absorber is space-efficient and does not add mass to the primary system, and hence, it has the potential in systems where the weight matters, such as aerospace applications. Full article

Introduction: The presence of syringomyelia associated with Dandy-Walker malformation is rarely described in adults. Case report: We report a case of a 28-year-old woman with a history of Dandy-Walker malformation who developed syringomyelia. She had been previously treated in childhood with a ventriculoperitoneal and cystoperitoneal shunt for hydrocephalus, but over time she developed progressive neurological symptoms, including numbness and weakness in the upper extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a syrinx extending from C4 to T1 associated with large posterior fossa cyst. The patient was treated with cyst fenestration and cystoperitoneal shunts were removed, with complete resolution of symptoms and disappearance of syrinx. Discussion: A literature review revealed only 6 cases of syringomyelia associated with Dandy-Walker malformation in adults. The pathophysiology of this entity is multifactorial and may be related to obstructed cerebrospinal fluid flow, altered pressure dynamics, and formation of arachnoid adhesions. Conclusions: Individualized surgical approaches are essential for optimizing outcomes in this rare condition. Further research is needed to standardize treatment protocols and clarify underlying mechanisms and help to improve the management of these patients. Full article

High-performance acoustic resonators based on single-crystalline piezoelectric thin films have great potential in wireless communication applications. This paper presents the modeling, fabrication, and characterization of laterally excited bulk resonators (XBARs) utilizing the suspended ultra-thin (~420 nm) LiTaO3 (LT, with 42° YX-cut) film. The finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to model the LT-based XBARs precisely and to gain further insight into the physical behaviors of the acoustic waves and the loss mechanisms. In addition, the temperature response of the devices was numerically calculated, showing relatively low temperature coefficients of frequency (TCF) of ~−38 ppm/K for the primary resonant mode. The LT-based XBARs were fabricated and characterized, which presents a multi-resonant mode over a wide frequency range (0.1~10 GHz). For the primary resonance around 4.1 GHz, the fabricated devices exhibited a high-quality factor (Bode-Q) ~ 600 and piezoelectric coupling (kt2) ~ 2.84%, while the higher-harmonic showed a greater value of kt2 ~ 3.49%. To lower the resonant frequency of the resonator, the thin SiO2 film (~20 nm) was sputtered on the suspended device, which created a frequency offset between the series and shunt resonators. Finally, a ladder-type narrow band filter employing five XBARs was developed and characterized. This work effectively demonstrates the performance and application potential of micro-acoustic resonators employing high-quality LT films. Full article

For several decades, Moore’s law has driven the semiconductor industry, with computational power and production costs as the main drivers. Such drivers have enabled several technological innovations in the mechatronics and dynamics architecture of photolithography machines, used for semiconductor circuits manufacturing. Among current investigations, the use of superconductive magnets would enable higher accelerating stages and, thus, higher throughput and lower manufacturing costs. However, this involves a complex magnet structure that needs to operate at cryogenic temperatures and mechanical resonances at relatively low frequencies as a result of the thermal architecture of the system. The damping options are also limited due to the very low temperature. This paper explores the use of shunted piezoelectric transducers for damping the internal modes of the magnet mass. A classical resistive and inductive RL shunt is considered. The study was conducted both numerically and experimentally on a demonstrator of a superconductive magnet plate concept, where piezoelectric transducers are incorporated to support the superconducting coils. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of piezoelectric shunts as a damping solution at very low temperatures, with limited impact of the temperature variation on the performance. Full article

The present paper is concerned with a magnetorheological (MR)-damper-based vibration-reduction system with energy harvesting capability considering sprung mass changes. The system represents a mechanical harmonic oscillator with electrical coupling, set in motion by kinematic excitation. The authors examine the system performance in the case when the MR damper control coil (damper control coil) is powered directly by the alternating current resulting from the voltage generated in an electromagnetic harvester in the assumed frequency range of sine excitation. Such a system is able to attenuate vibration in the near-resonance frequency range when the current in the damper control coil increases; however, its drawback is vibration amplification at higher frequencies. To eliminate this negative feature, it is proposed to connect shunt capacitors in parallel with the damper control coil. Then, the system can be tested experimentally in terms of current in the damper control coil, sprung mass, and the capacity of shunt capacitors in order to evaluate system performance according to the assumed performance index. The obtained results demonstrate significant improvement in system performance at higher frequencies of excitation. Full article

Migraine is a common neurological disease with a still-unclear etiology and pathogenesis. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a kind of congenital heart disease that leads to a right-to-left shunt (RLS). Although previous studies have shown that PFO has an effect on migraine, a clear conclusion about the link between PFO and migraine is lacking. We first summarized the PFO potential mechanisms associated with migraine, including microembolus-triggered cortical spreading depression (CSD), the vasoactive substance hypothesis, impaired cerebral autoregulation (CA), and a common genetic basis. Further, we analyzed the changes in brain structure and function in migraine patients and migraine patients with PFO. We found that in migraine patients with PFO, the presence of PFO may affect the structure of the cerebral cortex and the integrity of white matter, which is mainly locked in subcortical, deep white matter, and posterior circulation, and may lead to changes in brain function, such as cerebellum and colliculus, which are involved in the processing and transmission of pain. In summary, this paper provides neuroimaging evidence and new insights into the correlation between PFO and migraine, which will help to clarify the etiology and pathogenesis of migraine, and aid in the diagnosis and treatment of migraine in the future. The shunt active power filter (SAPF) system oscillation is a massive threat to the security and stability of the power grid. This study classifies SAPF oscillation into two categories according to the difference in mechanisms. The SAPF oscillation in one category is caused by the resonant characteristics of a switching noise filter and is called external loop amplification. The SAPF oscillation in the other category is induced by the presence of a capacitor in the load current for SAPF and is called self-excited oscillation. Unlike previous studies, this study tried to reveal the internal relationship between the two kinds of SAPF oscillation, present a general shunt virtual-damping-based SAPF oscillation suppression strategy covering the previous resonant damping method, and provide the discrete domain stability criterion of the control system. The sampling frequency was at least six times the resonant frequency. The stability region was enlarged with an increase in the sampling frequency and narrowed with a rise in the resonant frequency. As to the harmful self-excited oscillation problem, this study proposes a composite control strategy combining selective harmonic compensation and grid-side current feedback. Moreover, this study considers the more general resistance–inductance–capacitance load situations and analyzes the stability of the SAPF–Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) hybrid compensation system. Simulations and experiments demonstrated that the proposed compound control method can reduce the primary harmonics of the system by more than 90% and has a better oscillation suppression performance than previous suppression methods. In particular, if we selected the TSC series reactance rate following more than 6%, self-excited oscillation could usually be avoided. Full article

The conventional piezoelectric metamaterials with operational-amplifier-based shunt circuits have limited application due to the voltage restriction of the amplifiers. In this research, we report a novel piezoelectric metamaterial beam that takes advantage of mechanical shunt resonators. The proposed metamaterial beam consisted of a piezoelectric beam and remote mechanical piezoelectric resonators coupled with electrical wires. The local resonance of the remote mechanical shunt resonators modified the mechanical properties of the beam, yielding an elastic wave attenuation capability. A finite-length piezoelectric metamaterial beam and mechanical shunt resonators were considered for conceptual illustration. Significant elastic wave attenuation can be realized in the vicinity of the resonant frequency of the shunt resonators. The proposed system has the potential in the application of wave attenuation under large-amplitude excitations. Full article

In this paper, a very high sensitivity microwave-based planar microfluidic sensor is presented. Sensitivity enhancement is achieved and described theoretically and experimentally by eliminating any extra parasitic capacitance not contributing to the sensing mechanism. The sensor consists of a microstrip transmission line loaded with a series connected shunt LC resonator. A microfluidic channel is attached to the area of the highest electric field concentration. The electric field distribution and, therefore, the resonance characteristics are modified by applying microfluidic dielectric samples to the sensing area. The sensor performance and working principle are described through a circuit model analysis. A device prototype is fabricated, and experimental measurements using water/ethanol and water/methanol solutions are presented for validation of the sensing mathematical model. Full article

This work presents the design of a control law based on the average model of a shunt active power filter considering an H-bridge neutral point clamped topology and its experimental validation. Therefore, the proposed controller is formed by three control loops, namely current (inner), regulation (outer), and balance control loops. The current loop aims to compensate both the displacement power factor and the harmonic distortion produced by nonlinear loads connected to the point of common coupling. To deal with harmonic current distortion, the current loop involves an adaptive mechanism based on a bank of resonant filters tuned at odd harmonics of the fundamental grid frequency. The regulation and balance loops are aimed to maintain the voltage of the capacitors forming the DC-link at a desired constant level. For this, proportional-integral controllers are designed. The design of all three loops considers the average model of the system. The performance of the proposed multi-loop control law is evaluated through numerical results and real-time experimental implementation, both considering a 2 kW academic benchmark with a constant switching frequency of 7 kHz. In order to provide harmonic distortion, a nonlinear load based on an uncontrolled diode bridge rectifier is considered. Additionally, step-load changes from 0.5 kW to 1 kW are considered for the nonlinear load. As a result, a suitable current tracking, voltage regulation, and balance are observed despite parametric uncertainties, load variations, and harmonic distortion. As a consequence, in steady state, simulation results indicate that the compensated grid current THD is 1.75%; meanwhile, the nonlinear load current THD is 52.5%. Experimental results indicate that the compensated grid current THD is 2.32%; meanwhile, the nonlinear load current THD is 53.8%. Full article

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as naphthalene, are potential health risks due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. Bacteria from the genus Rhodococcus are able to metabolise a wide variety of pollutants such as alkanes, aromatic compounds and halogenated hydrocarbons. A naphthalene dioxygenase from Rhodococcus sp. strain NCIMB12038 has been characterised for the first time, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. In the native state, the EPR spectrum of naphthalene 1,2-dioxygenase (NDO) is formed of the mononuclear high spin Fe(III) state contribution and the oxidised Rieske cluster is not visible as EPR-silent. In the presence of the reducing agent dithionite a signal derived from the reduction of the [2Fe-2S] unit is visible. The oxidation of the reduced NDO in the presence of O2-saturated naphthalene increased the intensity of the mononuclear contribution. A study of the “peroxide shunt”, an alternative mechanism for the oxidation of substrate in the presence of H2O2, showed catalysis via the oxidation of mononuclear centre while the Rieske-type cluster is not involved in the process. Therefore, the ability of these enzymes to degrade recalcitrant aromatic compounds makes them suitable for bioremediative applications and synthetic purposes. Full article

The interactions between shunt active power filter (APF) and capacitance load tend to result in stability problems and resonance. The conventional model of a shunt APF is not precise enough to reflect this phenomenon. To address it, this paper proposes a modified shunt APF system model to accurately reflect various stability problems. This paper also studies the mechanism of positive feedback resonance brought by capacitance load and proposes a modified hybrid controller to improve the stable margin of the system, making the shunt APF work stably under different working conditions where there are μF capacitors on the demand side. The correctness and validity of the proposed strategy are verified by simulation analysis and prototype experiments. Full article
