A First Report on Planting Arrangements for Alfalfa as an Economic Nurse Crop During Kura Clover Establishment

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) persists for several years but must be rotated to another crop before replanting. Kura clover (T. ambiguum M. Bieb) is a perennial legume that can persist indefinitely without replanting; however, establishment is slow, which limits economic returns during the process. Two studies, each with four randomized complete blocks, were planted in two consecutive years at New Mexico State University’s Rex E. Kirksey Agricultural Science Center at Tucumcari, NM, USA, as the first known assessment evaluating alfalfa as an economic nurse crop during kura clover establishment using various kura clover–alfalfa drilled and broadcast planting arrangements. Irrigation termination due to drought limited yield measurements to three years after seeding. In that time, kura clover–alfalfa mixtures generally yielded equally to monoculture alfalfa, except for alternate row planting. After 5 years, the alfalfa stand percentage remained >80%, except for the alternate row treatment (69% stand). Kura clover monocultures attained about 40% stand, and the mixtures had a <25% stand. Alfalfa may persist for more than 5 years before relinquishing dominance to kura clover in mixtures, but the alfalfa would continue to provide economic returns as kura clover continues stand development with minimal production, but develops its root system to maximize production when released from the alfalfa nurse crop. Inertial navigation systems (INSs) exhibit distinctive characteristics, such as long-duration operation, full autonomy, and exceptional covertness compared to other navigation systems. However, errors are accumulated over time due to operational principles and the limitations of sensors. To address this problem, this study theoretically explores a numerically simulated integrated inertial navigation system consisting of a single-axis cold atom interferometer gyroscope (CAIG) and a conventional inertial measurement unit (IMU). The system leverages the low bias and drift of the CAIG and the high sampling rate of the conventional IMU to obtain more accurate navigation information. Furthermore, an adaptive gradient ascent (AGA) method is proposed to estimate the variance of the measurement noise online for the Kalman filter. It was found that errors of latitude, longitude, and positioning are reduced by 43.9%, 32.6%, and 32.3% compared with the conventional IMU over 24 h. On this basis, errors from inertial sensor drift could be further reduced by the online Kalman filter. Full article

The objective of this investigation is to obtain numerical solutions for a variety of mathematical models in a wide range of disciplines, such as chemical kinetics, neurosciences, nonlinear optics, metallurgical separation/alloying processes, and asset dynamics in mathematical finance. This research features numerical simulations conducted with a remarkably low error measure, providing a visual representation of the examined models in these areas. The proposed method is the double Laplace–Adomian decomposition method, which facilitates the numerical acquisition and analysis of solutions. This paper presents the first report of numerical simulations employing this innovative methodology to address these problems. The findings are expected to benefit the natural sciences, mathematical modeling, and their practical applications, representing the innovative aspect of this article. Additionally, this method can analyze many classes of partial differential equations, whether linear or nonlinear, without the need for linearization or discretization. Full article

Effects of Blood-Glucose Lowering Therapies on Body Composition and Muscle Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes: A Narrative Review

Background and Objectives: The management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) extends beyond glycemic control, requiring a more global strategy that includes optimization of body composition, even more so in the context of sarcopenia and visceral adiposity, as they contribute to poor outcomes. Past reviews have typically been focused on weight reduction or glycemic effectiveness, with limited inclusion of new therapies’ effects on muscle and fat distribution. In addition, the emergence of incretin-based therapies and dual agonists such as tirzepatide requires an updated synthesis of their impacts on body composition. This review attempts to bridge the gap by taking a systematic approach to how current blood-glucose lowering therapies affect lean body mass, fat mass, and the risk of sarcopenia in T2D patients. Materials and Methods: Between January 2015 and March 2025, we conducted a narrative review by searching the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for English-language articles. The keywords were combinations of the following: “type 2 diabetes,” “lean body mass,” “fat mass,” “body composition,” “sarcopenia,” “GLP-1 receptor agonists,” “SGLT2 inhibitors,” “tirzepatide,” and “antidiabetic pharmacotherapy.” Reference lists were searched manually as well. The highest precedence was assigned to studies that aimed at adult type 2 diabetic subjects and reported body composition results. Inclusion criteria for studies were: (1) type 2 diabetic mellitus adult patients and (2) reporting measures of body composition (e.g., lean body mass, fat mass, or muscle function). We prioritized randomized controlled trials and large observational studies and excluded mixed diabetic populations, non-pharmacological interventions only, and poor reporting of body composition. Results: Metformin was widely found to be weight-neutral with minimal effects on muscle mass. Insulin therapy, being an anabolic hormone, often leads to fat mass accumulation and increases the risk of sarcopenic obesity. Incretin-based therapies induced substantial weight loss, mostly from fat mass. Notable results were observed in studies with tirzepatide, demonstrating superior reduction not only in fat mass, but also in visceral fat. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) promote fat loss but are associated with a small yet significant decrease in lean muscle mass. Conclusions: Blood-glucose lowering therapies demonstrated clinically relevant effects on body composition. Treatment should be personalized, balancing glycemic control, cardiovascular, and renal benefits, together with optimal impact on muscle mass along with glycemic, cardiovascular, and renal benefits. Protein–polyelectrolyte nanostructures assembled via electrostatic interactions offer versatile applications in biomedicine, tissue engineering, and food science. However, several open questions remain regarding their intermolecular interactions and the influence of external conditions—such as temperature and pH—on their assembly, stability, and responsiveness. This study explores the formation and stability of networks between poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and lysozyme (LYZ) at the nanoscale upon thermal treatment, using a combination of experimental and simulation measures. Experimental techniques of static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and circular dichroism (CD) are combined with all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. Model systems consisting of multiple PAA and LYZ molecules explore collective assembly and complexation in aqueous solution. Experimental results indicate that electrostatic complexation occurs between PAA and LYZ at pH values below LYZ’s isoelectric point. This leads to the formation of nanoparticles (NPs) with radii ranging from 100 to 200 nm, most pronounced at a PAA/LYZ mass ratio of 0.1. These complexes disassemble at pH 12, where both LYZ and PAA are negatively charged. However, when complexes are thermally treated (TT), they remain stable, which is consistent with earlier findings. Atomistic simulations demonstrate that thermal treatment induces partially reversible structural changes, revealing key microscopic features involved in the stabilization of the formed network. Although electrostatic interactions dominate under all pH and temperature conditions, thermally induced conformational changes reorganize the binding pattern, resulting in an increased number of contacts between LYZ and PAA upon thermal treatment. The altered hydration associated with conformational rearrangements emerges as a key contributor to the stability of the thermally treated complexes, particularly under conditions of strong electrostatic repulsion at pH 12. Moreover, enhanced polymer chain associations within the network are observed, which play a crucial role in complex stabilization. These insights contribute to the rational design of protein–polyelectrolyte materials, revealing the origins of association under thermally induced structural rearrangements. Full article

Air pollution is linked to childhood mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries globally. There is growing evidence linking air pollution to asthma and other respiratory diseases in children. Studies have shown that children are likely to experience asthma due to their narrow airways and their heightened sensitivity to environmental irritants. This study aims to investigate the relationship between ambient air pollution and respiratory diseases in children under the age of 5. The study will be conducted in the informal township of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, South Africa. A quantitative approach will be used in this cross-sectional analytical study. Data will be collected using different tools that include a questionnaire to determine the prevalence of asthma and respiratory disease and potential risk factors. While environmental air pollution will be measured using Radiello passive samplers and Gillian pumps. Data will be analyzed using the latest version of the STATANow/MP 19.5 software. Furthermore, health risk assessment will be conducted for lifetime non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk estimation following the USEPA framework. The study will identify environmental triggers that exacerbate asthma and other respiratory conditions in other similar community settings and will contribute to the body of knowledge in public health. Ethical approval was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Johannesburg. Full article

Submaximal Oxygen Deficit During Incremental Treadmill Exercise in Elite Youth Female Handball Players

Laboratory-based assessment of cardiorespiratory function is a widely applied method in sports science. Most performance evaluations focus on oxygen uptake parameters. Despite the well-established concept of oxygen deficit introduced by Hill in the 1920s, relatively few studies have examined its behavior during submaximal exercise, with limited exploration of deficit dynamics. The present study aimed to analyze the behavior of oxygen deficit in young female handball players (N = 42, age: 15.4 ± 1.3 years) during graded exercise. Oxygen deficit was estimated using the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) algorithm, restricted to subanaerobic threshold segments of a quasi-ramp exercise protocol. Cardiorespiratory parameters were measured with the spiroergometry test on treadmills, and body composition was assessed via Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). Cluster and principal component analyzes revealed two distinct athlete profiles with statistically significant differences in both morphological and physiological traits. Cluster 2 showed significantly higher relative VO2 peak (51.43 ± 3.70 vs. 45.70 ± 2.87 mL·kg−1·min−1; p < 0.001; Cohen’s d = 1.76), yet also exhibited a greater oxygen deficit per kilogram (39.03 ± 16.71 vs. 32.56 ± 14.33 mL·kg−1; p = 0.018; d = 0.80). Cluster 1 had higher absolute body mass (69.67 ± 8.13 vs. 59.66 ± 6.81 kg; p < 0.001), skeletal muscle mass (p < 0.001), and fat mass (p < 0.001), indicating that body composition strongly influenced oxygen deficit values. The observed differences in oxygen deficit profiles suggest a strong influence of genetic predispositions, particularly in cardiovascular and muscular oxygen utilization capacity. Age also emerged as a critical factor in determining the potential for adaptation. Oxygen deficit during submaximal exercise appears to be a multifactorial phenomenon shaped by structural and physiological traits. While certain influencing factors can be modified through training, others especially those of genetic origin pose inherent limitations. Early development of cardiorespiratory capacity may offer the most effective strategy for long-term optimization. Full article

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been reshaping maternal, fetal, neonatal, and reproductive healthcare by enhancing risk prediction, diagnostic accuracy, and operational efficiency across the perinatal continuum. However, no comprehensive synthesis has yet been published. Objective: To conduct a scoping review of reviews of AI/ML applications spanning reproductive, prenatal, postpartum, neonatal, and early child-development care. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus through April 2025. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality using AMSTAR 2 for systematic reviews, ROBIS for bias assessment, SANRA for narrative reviews, and JBI guidance for scoping reviews. Results: Thirty-nine reviews met our inclusion criteria. In preconception and fertility treatment, convolutional neural network-based platforms can identify viable embryos and key sperm parameters with over 90 percent accuracy, and machine-learning models can personalize follicle-stimulating hormone regimens to boost mature oocyte yield while reducing overall medication use. Digital sexual-health chatbots have enhanced patient education, pre-exposure prophylaxis adherence, and safer sexual behaviors, although data-privacy safeguards and bias mitigation remain priorities. During pregnancy, advanced deep-learning models can segment fetal anatomy on ultrasound images with more than 90 percent overlap compared to expert annotations and can detect anomalies with sensitivity exceeding 93 percent. Predictive biometric tools can estimate gestational age within one week with accuracy and fetal weight within approximately 190 g. In the postpartum period, AI-driven decision-support systems and conversational agents can facilitate early screening for depression and can guide follow-up care. Wearable sensors enable remote monitoring of maternal blood pressure and heart rate to support timely clinical intervention. Within neonatal care, the Heart Rate Observation (HeRO) system has reduced mortality among very low-birth-weight infants by roughly 20 percent, and additional AI models can predict neonatal sepsis, retinopathy of prematurity, and necrotizing enterocolitis with area-under-the-curve values above 0.80. From an operational standpoint, automated ultrasound workflows deliver biometric measurements at about 14 milliseconds per frame, and dynamic scheduling in IVF laboratories lowers staff workload and per-cycle costs. Home-monitoring platforms for pregnant women are associated with 7–11 percent reductions in maternal mortality and preeclampsia incidence. Despite these advances, most evidence derives from retrospective, single-center studies with limited external validation. Low-resource settings, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, remain under-represented, and few AI solutions are fully embedded in electronic health records. Conclusions: AI holds transformative promise for perinatal care but will require prospective multicenter validation, equity-centered design, robust governance, transparent fairness audits, and seamless electronic health record integration to translate these innovations into routine practice and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. In the rapidly evolving fields of materials science, catalysis, electronics, drug delivery, and environmental remediation, the development of effective substrates for molecular deposition has become increasingly crucial. Ordered mesoporous silica materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique structural properties and exceptional potential as substrates for molecular immobilization across these diverse applications. This study compares three mesoporous silica powders: MCM-41, SBA-15, and SBA-16. A multi-technique characterization approach was employed, utilizing low- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the structure–property relationships of these materials. XRD analysis confirmed the amorphous nature of silica frameworks and revealed distinct pore symmetries: a two-dimensional hexagonal (P6mm) structure for MCM-41 and SBA-15, and three-dimensional cubic (Im3¯m) structure for SBA-16. Nitrogen sorption measurements demonstrated significant variations in textural properties, with MCM-41 exhibiting uniform cylindrical mesopores and the highest surface area, SBA-15 displaying hierarchical meso- and microporosity confirmed by NLDFT analysis, and SBA-16 showing a complex 3D interconnected cage-like structure with broad pore size distribution. TEM imaging provided direct visualization of particle morphology and internal pore architecture, enabling estimation of lattice parameters and identification of structural gradients within individual particles. The integration of these complementary techniques proved essential for comprehensive material characterization, particularly for MCM-41, where its small particle size (45–75 nm) contributed to apparent structural inconsistencies between XRD and sorption data. This integrated analytical approach provides valuable insights into the fundamental structure–property relationships governing ordered mesoporous silica materials and demonstrates the necessity of combined characterization strategies for accurate structural determination. This study investigates the effects of low nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stress on the growth and yield of nine barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes (1267-2, 1749-1, 1149-3, 2017Y-2, 2017Y-16, 2017Y-17, 2017Y-18, 2017Y-19, and XBZ17-1-61), all of which are spring two-rowed hulled barley types from the Economic Crops and Beer Material Institute, Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Data were collected over two consecutive growing seasons (2021–2022) at Huangyang Town (altitude 1766 m, irrigated desert soil with 1.71% organic matter, 1.00 g·kg−1 total N, 0.87 g·kg−1 total P in 0–20 cm plough layer) to elucidate the correlation between stress tolerance traits and yield performance. Field experiments were conducted under two treatment conditions: no fertilization (NP0) and normal fertilization (180 kg·hm−2 N and P, NP180). Growth indicators (plant height, spike length, spikelets per unit area, etc.) and quality indicators (proportion of plump/shrunken grains, 1000-grain weight, protein, starch content) were measured, and data were analyzed using correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and structural equation modeling. The results revealed that low N and P stress significantly impacted quality indicators, such as the proportion of plump and shrunken grains, while having a minimal effect on growth indicators like plant height and spike length. Notably, the number of spikelets per unit area emerged as a critical factor positively influencing yield. Among the tested genotypes, 1749-1, 1267-2, 1149-3, 2017Y-16, 2017Y-18, 2017Y-19, and XBZ17-1-61 exhibited superior yield performance under low N and P stress conditions, indicating their potential for breeding programs focused on stress resilience. Included among these, the 1749-1 line showed the best overall performance and consistent results across both years. Full article

Research concerning green marketing has predominantly focused on consumer behavior. However, aspects such as the extent to which Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) embrace green marketing values, their ability to implement the green marketing mix, and the integration of green marketing into their business culture are critically important. This research aims to provide the 4P (product, price, place, and promotion)-focused green marketing literature with a measurement tool to assess how SMEs implement green marketing practices. The study employed a descriptive design and possesses an exploratory nature. Scale development involved two stages: First, analyses were conducted on a pre-test sample of 159 individuals, revealing the initial scale structure. Second, these analyses were repeated on a larger group of 387 participants. The scale was finalized by confirming the consistency of results across both analyses. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24 and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) version 24 were utilized for descriptive statistics and the scale development process. The final validated 12-item scale demonstrates a robust three-factor structure (“Environmental Promotion”, ”Green Packaging”, and ”Green Distribution”), explaining 62.6% of the total variance. The scale exhibits excellent psychometric properties, including high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.912), strong model fit from Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and both convergent and discriminant validity, as indicated by an Average Variance Extracted (AVE) value of 0.605. The scale is deemed applicable to larger populations. Full article

Water science has always been a central part of modern scientific research. In this study, the viscosity and hydrogen bond structures of methanol aqueous solutions with different molar ratios were investigated via confocal microscopic Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectra of methanol in the CH and CO stretching regions were measured in order to investigate the structure of water/methanol molecules. The points of transition were identified by observing changes in viscosity following changes in concentration, and the bands were assigned to the C-H bond vibration shifts where the molar ratios of methanol and water were 1:3 and 3:1. Furthermore, the large band shift of 19 cm−1 between the methanol solutions with the lowest and highest concentrations contained three hydrogen bond network modes, affecting the viscosity of the solution. This study provides an explanation for the relationship between the microstructures and macroscopic properties of aqueous solutions. Full article

Traditional energy conservation policies have primarily relied on economic incentives and informational campaigns. However, recent insights from behavioral and social sciences indicate that subtle behavioral interventions, particularly social nudges, can significantly influence household electricity use. This paper presents a structured review of 23 recent field studies examining how social nudging strategies, such as peer comparison, group identity, and normative messaging, have contributed to measurable reductions in electricity consumption. By analyzing intervention outcomes across different regions and formats, we identify key success factors, limitations, and policy implications. Special attention is given to ethical considerations, fairness in implementation, and potential challenges in sustaining behavior change. This study offers a framework for integrating social nudges into future energy policies, emphasizing their role as low-cost, scalable tools for promoting sustainable energy behavior. Full article

Healthy food service guidelines (HFSG) comprise food, nutrition, behavioral design, and other standards to guide the purchasing, preparation, and offering of foods and beverages in worksites and institutional food service. To date, there have been few attempts to synthesize evidence for HFSG effectiveness in non-K-12 or early childhood education sectors, particularly at worksites and institutional food services. We conducted a scoping review to achieve the following: (1) characterize the existing literature on the effectiveness of HFSG for improving the institution’s food environment, financial outcomes, and consumers’ diet quality and health, and (2) identify gaps in the literature. The initial search in PubMed and Web of Science retrieved 10,358 articles; after screening and snowball searching, 68 articles were included for analysis. Studies varied in terms of HFSG implementation settings, venues, and outcomes in both U.S. (n = 34) and non-U.S. (n = 34) contexts. The majority of HFSG interventions occurred in venues where food is sold (e.g., worksite cafeterias, vending machines). A diversity of HFSG terminology and measurement tools demonstrates the literature’s breadth. Literature gaps include quasi-experimental study designs, as well as interventions in settings that serve dependent populations (e.g., universities, elderly feeding programs, and prisons). The aim of this research is to identify policy and practice interventions that support a just transition towards resilient practices for resource-dependent communities. We focus on Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho, two provinces in the Northern Midlands and Mountains of Vietnam. The region is reliant on agriculture but is assessed as highly vulnerable to climate change. We surveyed 105 farming households. A Likert-type questionnaire asked respondents to self-assess their experiences of weather extremes and of changes they had made to their farming practices. Our results show that for both Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho, farmers see the effects of climate change on their crops. Respondents in Thai Nguyen were more likely to report technically driven adaptation and engagement with extension services. Respondents in Pho Tho were more likely to continue traditional practices. For both, use of traditional knowledge and practices was related to taking measures to adapt to climate change. Our main conclusion is that at least three actions could support a just transition to resilient livelihoods. First is incorporating natural science and traditional knowledge into decision-making for just transitions. Second is considering long-term implications of interventions that appear to support livelihoods in the short term. Third is tailoring messaging and engagement strategies to the requirements of the most vulnerable people. The main message of this study is that a just transition for resource-dependent communities will inevitably be context-specific. Even in centralized and authoritarian contexts, flexibility to adapt top-down policies to locals’ own experiences of changing climates is needed. Full article
