Existing research on iron smelting sites from the Han to Song Dynasties in southeastern Guangxi has focused on metallurgical technology analysis, but geographic information system-based analysis remains limited. To address this gap, this study examines spatial distribution, clustering patterns, and natural controls of iron smelting sites and clarifies the coupling relationship between spatial patterns and the evolution of bloomery iron smelting and cast iron smelting technology. This study examines 38 iron smelting sites using a geographic database that integrates kernel density estimation, Thiessen polygons, and geographic detectors to reveal spatial patterns and driving factors. Results show that: (1) two smelting technologies existed in the region (bloomery iron and cast iron); (2) sites exhibit a three-centre cluster, with the highest density in Pingnan County; (3) lithology was the primary controlling factor, followed by contour density, relief, elevation, and soil properties; (4) shaft furnaces existed in favourable geotechnical conditions and transport access; small-scale furnaces are controlled by ore availability, with additional cultural and safety influences. This study reveals the spatial heterogeneity and key factors of iron smelting sites in southeastern Guangxi, providing quantitative support for Lingnan metallurgical archaeology, human–environment relations, and dissemination of Maritime Silk Road technology. The National Park Service conducted an amphibious battlefield survey in 2023 of the Agat and Asan Beach Units of War in the Pacific National Historical Park, Guam. This exploratory project used a multidisciplinary approach to further understanding of the 1944 Battle of Guam, one of the most significant invasions of the Pacific Theater during World War II. As part of the project, the team located and documented blast features created by U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Teams during the removal of obstacles placed on and near the landing beaches by the Japanese as deterrents. The discovery of these blast features was guided by archival research and documented through photogrammetry, bathymetry, and RTK GNSS surveys. The blast features represent intentional modification to the seafloor and were examined in archaeological and ecological contexts. This article discusses the discovery and documentation of the blast features, the long-lasting impact of World War II on the island, the value of integrating cultural and natural resource studies, and implications for maritime heritage research and management. This article concludes with considerations for future directions for archaeological and multidisciplinary research focused on seafloor modification. Full article

Recent underwater and remote sensing surveys identified, located, and documented the wreck of a Liberty-class cargo ship, SS Samuel J. Tilden, which sank during the German raid of Bari in December 1943. The use of remote sensing technologies (MBES, ROVs) and the photogrammetric acquisition for the creation of 3D models were central for a comprehensive analysis of the wreck site. The analysis of remote sensing and photogrammetric data indicates a well-preserved wreck, as previously noted in avocational underwater surveys, and a complex maritime landscape. By applying remote sensing and non-invasive technologies to conflict archaeology remains, this paper provides a basis for future studies on World War II wrecks in Italy. Full article

Underwater cultural heritage represents a fragile and largely unexplored component of historical landscapes, particularly in dynamic fluvial and coastal environments. Despite increasing international attention to its protection, the spatial identification of submerged heritage remains methodologically challenging. This study proposes a geo-historical approach that integrates historical cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify areas of high archaeological potential in underwater contexts. Focusing on the Douro River in Porto (Portugal), a UNESCO World Heritage city with a long maritime and fluvial history, the research analyses a set of key historical maps from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, complemented by documentary and archaeological sources. These cartographic materials were georeferenced and critically assessed in QGIS, enabling the digitisation of features associated with land–water interaction, navigation hazards, port infrastructures, and military defences. The resulting spatial dataset was used to generate an interpretative map and a kernel density model highlighting potential underwater heritage hotspots along the riverbed and riverbanks. The findings identify several priority zones, including the river mouth, historic quays, former shipbuilding areas, and sectors linked to nineteenth-century defensive structures. While the study does not include in situ verification, it demonstrates the value of historical maps as predictive tools for guiding targeted underwater surveys and proposes a transferable, cost-effective framework for heritage prospection and management in historically active fluvial–estuarine settings. The short career of the Philadelphia-built transatlantic steamship S.S. Lewis (1851–1853) offers an instructive look at speculation, financing, and operating a steamer in the mid-19th century United States. S.S. Lewis was built as an American entry into the highly competitive arena of the transatlantic steam packet service. An early propeller steamer, it was heralded as an exemplar of American technology and shipbuilding prowess. It was also cleverly marketed, and named for Samuel Shaw (S.S.) Lewis, the Boston-based agent for Cunard. Following the failure of the transatlantic partnership that operated S.S. Lewis, the vessel entered the isthmian service from Nicaragua to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. It wrecked, without loss of life, in April 1853 north of the Golden Gate. The wreck site, known to pioneering wreck divers for decades, is now archaeologically described and assessed for the first time. The post-wreck saga of the site is an important part of the story of the evolution of maritime archaeology in California. Full article

This study investigates the archaeological significance and preservation state of the Lombardo, a XIX century paddle steamer closely associated with Garibaldi’s Mille Expedition and now resting off the Tremiti Islands. The research aims to contextualize the vessel’s historical role and to reconstruct its steam engine, paddle wheel and shipwreck dynamics, providing the first comprehensive three-dimensional documentation of the site. Underwater photogrammetry was carried out using high-resolution imaging, a dedicated geodetic network of coded markers, and Structure-from-Motion workflows to generate a scaled 3D model of the wreck. Historical and technical sources were also examined to identify the original configuration of the steam engine and paddle wheel. The results show a highly fragmented site distributed between 9 and 22 m depth, where the surviving remains corroborate historical accounts of post-wreck salvage operations and subsequent natural collapse processes. Analysis of the wreck reveals that the ship’s steam engine was a Maudslay Siamese double-cylinder type, driving radial paddle wheels. The distribution of the remains also suggests that the vessel originally settled on its port side, oriented along a north–south axis. The conclusions demonstrate how integrated archaeological, geomatic, and archival methods could clarify the technical characteristics of the Lombardo and improve understanding of its post-depositional transformation, providing a robust basis for future conservation and dissemination activities. In this study, we investigate the Suvarṇabhūmi area, corresponding to central–southern Mainland Southeast Asia. We test the hypothesis that this region, located to the south of the Himalayan foothills, can be characterised as a convergence zone in which diverse entities involving humans, animals, and artefacts have significantly diverged from their related counterparts outside the area. We argue that this process of convergence was facilitated by the Maritime Silk Road trade networks, which were particularly active between the 3rd century BCE and the 9th century CE. Comparative data are derived from multiple scientific disciplines, including linguistic typology, onomastics, epigraphy, archaeology, and evolutionary biology. This includes typological features of language, toponyms, inscriptions, glass bead chemistry and related material culture, and phylogenetic data from patterns of endemism to illustrate parallel convergence scenarios observed for each data type. The results reveal recurring patterns of convergence. Linguistic, technological, and biological entities tend to diverge from their original forms and realign with predominant regional types when entering the Suvarṇabhūmi area. The spread of Indic and Sinitic linguistic and cultural elements, the adaptation and development of Brāhmī scripts into distinct local forms, the secondary manufacturing of glass beads, and unique genetic lineages in mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and plants all point to the region’s role as a dynamic interaction sphere. We argue that Suvarṇabhūmi functions as an ecological system, in which trajectories of convergence are notable across a number of individual aspects of cultural and biological diversity. Altogether, these components have contributed to shaping the region’s distinctive natural and cultural history. Full article

Historically, the Mediterranean Sea has been an area of cultural exchange and maritime commerce. One out of many submerged archaeological sites is the Roman shipwreck that was discovered in 2006 off the coast of Santo Stefano al Mare, in the Ligurian Sea, Italy. The wreck was dated to the 1st century B.C. and consists of a well-preserved cargo ship of Roman amphorae that were likely used for transporting wine. In this study, we present the results of the first underwater survey of the wreck using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) industrialized by Graal Tech. The AUV was equipped with a NORBIT WBMS multibeam sonar, a 450 kHz side-scan sonar, and inertial navigation systems. The AUV conducted multiple high-resolution surveys on the wreck site and the collected data were processed using geospatial analysis methods to highlight local anomalies directly related to the presence of the Roman shipwreck. The main feature was an accumulation of amphorae, covering an area of approximately 10 × 7 m with a maximum height of 1 m above the seabed. The results of this interdisciplinary work demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating AUV technologies with spatial analysis techniques for underwater archaeological applications. Furthermore, the success of this mission highlighted the potential for broader applications of AUVs in the study of the seafloor, such as monitoring seabed movements related to offshore underground energy storage or the identification of objects lying on the seabed, such as cables or pipelines. The objective of this article is to provide a critical analysis of maritime heterotopia as a category for reinterpreting ships, shipwrecks and maritime landscapes between the 16th and 18th centuries. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining history, underwater archaeology, heritage theory and literary analysis, it explores the ways in which maritime spaces, especially ships and shipwrecks, functioned as ‘other spaces’–following Foucault’s concept of heterotopia–in the articulation of imperial projects, power relations, experiences of transit and narratives of memory. A particular focus has been placed on the examination of shipwreck accounts, which are regarded as microhistories of human behaviour in contexts of crisis. These accounts have been shown to offer insights into alternative social structures, dynamics of authority, and manifestations of violence or solidarity. A review of the legal framework and practices related to shipwrecks in the Spanish Carrera de Indias is also undertaken, with particular emphasis on their impact on maritime legislation and international law. This article proposes a reading of maritime heritage as a symbolic and political device in constant dispute, where material remains and associated narratives shape collective memories, geopolitical tensions and new forms of cultural appropriation. Shipwrecks thus become sites of rupture and origin, charged with utopian, dystopian and heterotopic potential. Full article

This study presents a finite element-based numerical simulation of a shipwreck scenario at the 4th-century BC underwater archaeological site near the island of Žirje, integrating engineering analysis with archaeological interpretation. The site is notable for the wide scattering of amphorae across the seafloor. A scaled model, based on the well-documented Kyrenia shipwreck, found off the coast of Cyprus, was developed to approximate the estimated parameters of the Žirje vessel, incorporating reduced dimensions, an adjusted freeboard, and a total deadweight of approximately six tons. The finite element model of the ship, its cargo, and the seabed was developed using LS-DYNA R11.1. software. Instead of fluid modelling, the study employed explicit dynamic analysis with a rigid seabed, gravitational loading, and automatic contact to reduce computational cost. A series of parametric simulations explored the effects of roll, yaw, and varying gravitational forces on the sinking behaviour and cargo dispersion. Results indicate that only certain non-uniform sinking conditions, combined with seabed currents, accurately replicate the archaeological distribution of the amphorae. This approach underscores the value of integrating finite element analysis (FEA) with archaeological data to generate digitally supported hypotheses, demonstrating how numerical reconstruction can enhance the interpretation of complex underwater archaeological sites. Obsidian was a key toolstone for the development of maritime lifeways in the western archipelago of southernmost South America. This area is a fragmented landscape where the major north–south movement of people along the Pacific was only possible by navigation because it is constrained by major biogeographic barriers. Two obsidian sources have been recorded, each one located on the extremes of the archipelago, and each has played a key role in the canoe-adapted societies that used them. As indicated by repeated inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses, obsidian from Chaitén Volcano to the north was distributed between 38°26′ S and 45°20′ S, and obsidian from Seno Otway to the south was distributed between 50° and 55° S, although it mainly occurred in sites close to the Strait of Magellan and within constrained time periods. This study explores the distribution of these two types of obsidians, their chronology, their frequencies in the archaeological record, the main artifact classes that are represented, and the technological processes in which they were involved. This examination indicates common aspects in the selection of high-quality toolstones for highly mobile maritime groups and discusses the different historical trajectories of two obsidians that appear decoupled across the Holocene. A multiproxy methodology has been employed to characterise two granite anchors discovered on the seabed near the island of Nueva Tabarca (Alicante, Southeast Spain). According to the significant archaeological context where they were found, the studied anchors can be dated from the Roman ages (late Republican period). One of the most interesting aspects is the absence of regional geological outcrops with rocks compatible with the granite used in the production of the anchor, which shows a foreign origin consistent with the connection of the anchor to maritime transport across the Mediterranean Sea. The lack of precise information about the artifact’s origin underscores the interest and need for the application of petrological techniques to determine its provenance. The methodology utilised encompasses five distinct techniques: (1) non-destructive textural analysis using X-ray microcomputed tomography; (2) K–Ar dating; (3) petrological characterisation through optical microscopy; (4) geochemical characterisation using X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry. The results allow for a comparison of the anchor rock’s characteristics with various granite outcrops along the Mediterranean coasts (Eastern, Central, and Western sectors), suggesting potential source areas based on petrological compatibility with the material under study. The findings point to the origin of the Nueva Tabarca granite anchor being granite outcrops in Southern Italy (Calabria), reinforcing the connection between the Spanish southeastern coasts and Southern Italy. These results highlight the utility and significance of multiproxy petrological methodologies in the geoarchaeological study of decontextualised artifacts. Full article

This article explores the maritime connections relating to Buddhism and diplomacy between polities in Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, the Indian subcontinent, and China from the beginning of the 11th century up to the 12th century CE. It focuses on new epigraphic evidence from Muara Jambi in the form of two inscribed strips of copper mentioning the Cūḍāmaṇivarmavihāra, a monastery funded by the king of Śrīvijaya in Nagapattinam (South India), and the Bālādityavihāra, probably located in Nālandā (Northeastern India). These new findings are compared to archaeological and textual materials from elsewhere in the Buddhist world that cast light on the web of transregional connections between Nusantara, China, and India in the early centuries of the second millennium. Bengala, a steamer that sank in 1889 near Capo Rizzuto, Italy, was a relatively new vessel for its time, with an unusually short 18-year service life, given that steamers of the period typically operated for 30 to 40 years. Despite its brief history, SS Bengala played a significant role in the development of Italy’s young merchant navy, undergoing multiple ownership changes and serving various Italian shipping companies. Employed mainly along the route to Southeast Asia, it transported Italian migrants overseas and also participated in troop raids during the Italian military expedition to Eritrea in 1887. Despite its historical significance, no iconographic material has yet been found to depict SS Bengala, and archival research conducted in Italy and England has not uncovered any naval plans, photographs, or drawings of the ship. To overcome this gap, the authors employed new technologies and historical information to create a virtual reconstruction. This research combined archival sources with underwater surveys, including a detailed 3D survey by divers and archaeologists. Archival research, including consultation of official documents, provided critical information on the ship’s dimensions, superstructure, rigging, materials, and construction methods. The 3D modelling of the ship’s external hull, based on precise geometric data from the wreck site, offers a first step towards virtual reconstruction. The modelling is grounded in photogrammetric surveying techniques, ensuring high accuracy in the reconstruction process. The model can be used in augmented reality (AR) applications to enhance underwater exploration, allowing divers to visualise the reconstructed ship in its original environment. Additionally, it supports museum exhibits, interactive visualisations, and educational games, making it a valuable resource for engaging the public with maritime history and archaeology. Full article

A submerged elevation located off the coast of Le Castella, a small village on the Ionian Coast of Calabria (Italy) populated for thousands of years that features notable archaeological remains from the Great Greece (Magna Graecia) and the Middle Ages, was investigated through in-depth, multidisciplinary, geoarchaeological research. This submarine elevation, once aligned with the marine terrace MIS 3 of Le Castella and still completely emerged between 10 and 8 ka years ago, slowly sank due to erosion and local tectonic-structural subsidence and was also favoured by a submerged normal fault that cuts the terrace in two. The dismantling and sinking of this part of the marine terrace has significantly changed the Late Holocene shorelines, with notable consequences on a topographic and archaeological level. In fact, one of the consequences of the sinking of this ancient promontory was the disappearance of two small islands that were reported to be right in front of Le Castella by numerous historical and cartographic sources. In the last decades, there has been a scientific debate over the existence of these islets, but no convincing evidence has been found about their actual presence up until now. This research, funded by the Marine Protected Area “Capo Rizzuto”, was conducted by means of underwater archaeological and geological surveys, geophysical seabed mapping systems, and both direct and instrumental optical surveys made with an Autonomous Surface Vehicle. The outcomes allow us to confirm the presence of these two partially emerged rock bodies up to half a millennium ago. In addition, the presence of anthropogenic extrabasinal materials in a marine area corresponding to one of the highest points of the submerged elevation allows us to define the exact position of one of the two islets. These archaeological findings have been subject, for the first time ever, to a thorough topographical and architectural analysis, then compared with other near and very similar submerged structures. On the basis of these comparisons, the findings should be attributed to the Byzantine Age or, at most, to the Middle Ages. In-depth archival research on portolan charts and navigation maps, in many cases unpublished and dating from the Middle Ages to the early 18th century, supports the results of our marine investigations from a historical point of view.
