The geochemistry of the fatty acids in the modern sediments in the Northern South Yellow Sea is still poorly studied, and studies on the geochemistry of the fatty acids in relatively long-core sediment samples are lacking. Thus, the fatty acids in the core sediments in the Northern South Yellow Sea were separated and identified to study their components and distribution characteristics, and the sources of organic matter and the early diagenetic evolution of the fatty acids in the sediments were discussed. The results show that saturated straight-chain fatty acids (methyl ester) have the highest content in the core sediments in the Northern South Yellow Sea, which account for 83.89% of the total fatty acids (methyl ester). nC16:0 is dominant, accounting for 30.48% of the n-saturated fatty acids (methyl ester). Unsaturated fatty acids (methyl ester) account for 7.59% of the total fatty acids (methyl ester). Binary unsaturated fatty acids (methyl ester) can only be detected in some samples, which are low in content and dominated by C18:2. Based on the components and distribution of the fatty acids (methyl ester) in the core sediments in the Northern South Yellow Sea, combined with the characteristics of other lipid biomarker compounds, the actual geological background, and previous research results, it is considered that the sources of organic matter in the core sediments are marine–terrestrial mixed materials, with terrestrial materials dominating. The fatty acids’ (methyl ester) CPI, the relative content of short-chain saturated fatty acids (methyl ester), and the unsaturated fatty acids (methyl ester) in the core sediments show non-obvious variation as the burial depth increases, reflecting that the fatty acids in the core sediments are strongly degraded at the early diagenetic stage, and this degradation is controlled by various complicated factors. A multidisciplinary study was conducted to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental evolution of Maladroxia Bay, one of the principal bays of the islet of Sant’Antioco in southwestern Sardinia, over the past eight millennia. As part of an archaeological landscape project, this study explores the paleogeography and environment of the bay from a diachronic perspective to gain insights into the Holocene relative sea level history, shoreline displacements, and the environmental conditions during different phases. This study is based on an analysis of four sediment cores in conjunction with a chronological model that is based on radiocarbon dates. Four relative sea level indicators were produced. These are the first such indicators from the early and middle Holocene for the island of Sant’Antioco. The results indicate that in the early Holocene, the area was a terrestrial, fluvial environment without marine influence. In the 6th millennium BCE, the rising sea level and marine transgression resulted in the formation of a shallow inner lagoon. It reached its maximum extent in the middle of the 5th millennium BCE. Afterwards, a gradual transition from lagoon to floodplain, and a seaward shift of the shoreline occurred. The lagoon potentially served as a valuable source of food and resources during the middle Holocene. During the Nuragic period (2nd to 1st millennium BCE), the Bay of Maladroxia was very similar to how it is today. Its location was ideal for use as an anchorage, due to the calm and sheltered conditions that prevailed. Full article

The paper presents the results of a microfossil study of Holocene sediments in the Yana River flow zone in the southeastern part of the Laptev Sea. A rich diatom flora (242 species and intraspecific taxa, of which 177 species are freshwater) was revealed; additionally, five species of marine tintinnids (planktonic ciliates) and 15 species of freshwater testate amoebae (testacean) were discovered for the first time in the sea sediments. Three assemblages of microfossils reflecting the phases of environmental changes during the Holocene transgression are distinguished in the studied sediments of core LV83-32. Assemblage 1 was formed under terrestrial conditions (assemblage of diatoms Eunotia-Pinnularia and testacean Difflugia-Cylindrifflugia-Centropyxis), assemblage 2 in the zone of mixing of sea and fresh waters (assemblages of diatoms Cyclotella striata-Aulacoseira, Thalassiosira hyperborea-Chaetoceros and T. hyperborea-Aulacoseira, testacean Cyclopyxis kahli, tintinnids Tintinnopsis fimbriata), and assemblage 3 reflects modern conditions in the inner shelf of the Laptev Sea under the strong influence of river runoff (assemblage of diatoms T. hyperborea-Aulacoseira-M. arctica and tintinnids Tintinnopsis ventricosoides). Changes in the natural environment in the coastal part of the Laptev Sea shelf during the Holocene, established by microfossil assemblages, are confirmed by geochemical data. Full article

Based on drilling, core and seismic data, combined with the regional tectonic sedimentary evolution background, the sedimentary environment of the Triassic carbonate rocks in the Mangeshlak Basin was studied. A sedimentary facies model of this set of carbonate rocks was established. Research has shown that the Mangeshlak Basin underwent a complete large-scale marine transgression–regression sedimentary evolution process during the Triassic. During the early to middle Triassic, seawater gradually invaded the northwest region of the basin from northwest to southeast and gradually regressed in the late Middle Triassic. In the lower part of the Triassic carbonate rocks, the primary components are developed granular limestone or dolomite with oolitic structures, interspersed with a small amount of thin mudstone, which is a good reservoir; the upper part of the Triassic is mainly composed of sedimentary mudstone and mudstone, which can form good sealings. The hill-shaped reflections of the platform edge facies, along with the high-frequency, strong-amplitude, and moderately continuous reflections within the restricted platform interior, are clearly visible on the seismic profile. These features are consistent with the sedimentary environment and lithofacies characteristics revealed by drilling data along the profile. Drilling and seismic data revealed that the sedimentary environment of the early and middle Triassic in the basin is mainly composed of shallow water platform edges and restricted platforms, as well as carbonate rock slopes and open non-marine shelves in deep water areas. A sedimentary facies model of the Triassic carbonate rock segment in the basin was established, comprising restricted platforms, platform edges, carbonate rock slopes, and non-marine shelves. Unlike the modified Wilson marginal carbonate rock platform model, the carbonate rock platform edge in the Mangeshlak Basin does not develop reef facies. Instead, it is mainly composed of oolitic beach (dam) sediments, making it the most favorable sedimentary facies zone for the Triassic reservoir development in the basin. Full article

Understanding the climate–weathering coupling mechanisms remains pivotal for interpreting global glacial–interglacial cycles, yet advancements have been constrained by the limited high-resolution sedimentary archives. The newly acquired BXZK2017-2 borehole (30.5 m core) from Bohai Bay provides an exceptional sedimentary sequence to investigate the Late Quaternary climate–weathering interactions. Through an integrated high-resolution chronostratigraphic framework (AMS 14C and OSL dating) coupled with multi-proxy sedimentological analyses (major element geochemistry and granulometric parameters), we reconstructed the chemical–weathering dynamics in the Bohai coastal region since the Late Pleistocene. Our findings revealed four distinct climate-weathering phases that correlate with the regional paleoenvironmental evolution and global climate perturbations: (1) enhanced weathering during mid-MIS3 to ~37.5 cal kyr BP (Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA): 55.9–62.2), corresponding to regional warming and strengthened summer monsoon circulation; (2) weathering minimum in late MIS3 through early–mid-MIS2 (37.5–14.8 cal kyr BP, CIA < 55), marking the peak aridity before the Last Glacial Maximum; (3) maximum weathering intensity from mid-MIS2 to early MIS1 (14.8–3.34 cal kyr BP, CIA: 65–68), documenting the postglacial humidification driven by the intensified East Asian Summer Monsoon; (4) renewed weathering decline during the Neoglacial (3.34 cal kyr BP-present, CIA: 59–63), coinciding with the late Holocene cooling events. Remarkably, this study identifies a striking synchronicity between the CIA in marine drill cores and δ18O records derived from Greenland ice cores. Our results indicate that chemical weathering proxies from marginal sea sediments can serve as robust recorders of post-Late Pleistocene climate variability, establishing a new proxy framework for global paleoclimate comparative research. Quaternary climate has been characterized by pronounced glacial–interglacial cycles, with eustatic sea-level fluctuations directly controlling coastal sedimentary environments. The Yellow River Delta, situated on the southwestern coast of Bohai Bay, bears a distinct stratigraphic imprint of marine–terrestrial environmental transitions. However, critical knowledge gaps persist in reconstructing an integrated continental–marine stratigraphic framework. This study focuses on the nearshore core CB2302, integrating sediment lithology, grain size, foraminiferal assemblages, and geochemical proxies to establish a regional stratigraphic chronology since MIS5. Three depositional units (DU1–DU3) and 12 sedimentary subunits (C1–C12) were identified based on grain-size distributions, geochemical signatures, hydrodynamic, and microfossil assemblages. Integration of AMS 14C dating and sequence stratigraphic analysis establishes a post-MIS 5 stratigraphic framework for the northern Yellow River Delta, revealing sedimentary responses to three transgressive–regressive cycles (MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a) and confirming widespread terrestrial deposition during MIS 4–2, with no detectable marine influence in MIS 3 strata. Furthermore, correlation with representative cores across the Yellow–Bohai Sea coastal system elucidates a unified model of shoreline migration patterns driven by post-MIS5 sea-level oscillations. These findings advance the understanding of Quaternary sediment–landscape interactions in deltaic systems and provide critical stratigraphic benchmarks for petroleum exploration and coastal engineering in active depositional basins. The remotely operated vehicle (ROV), a vital deep-sea platform, offers key advantages, including operational duration via continuous umbilical power, high task adaptability, and zero human risk. It has become indispensable for deep-sea scientific research and marine engineering. To enhance surveys of cobalt-rich crusts (CRCs) on complex seamount terrains, the 4500-m-class Haima ROV integrates advanced payloads, such as underwater positioning systems, multi-angle cameras, multi-functional manipulators, subsea shallow drilling systems, sediment samplers, and acoustic crust thickness gauges. Coordinated control between deck monitoring and subsea units enables stable multi-task execution within single dives, significantly improving operational efficiency. Survey results from Caiwei Guyot reveal the following: (1) ROV-collected data were highly reliable, with high-definition video mapping CRCs distribution across varied terrains. Captured crust-bearing rocks weighed up to 78 kg, drilled cores reached 110 cm, and acoustic thickness measurements had a 1–2 cm margin of error compared to in situ cores; (2) Video and cores analysis showed summit platforms (3–5° slopes) dominated by tabular crusts with gravel-type counterparts, summit margins (5–10° slopes) hosting gravel crusts partially covered by sediment, and steep slopes (12–15° slopes) exhibiting mixed crust types under sediment coverage. Thicker crusts clustered at summit margins (14 and 15 cm, respectively) compared to thinner crusts on platforms and slopes (10 and 7 cm, respectively). The Haima ROV successfully investigated CRC resources in complex terrains, laying the groundwork for seamount crust resource evaluations. Future advancements will focus on high-precision navigation and control, high-resolution crust thickness measurement, optical imaging optimization, and AI-enhanced image recognition. Full article

Gera Gulf, a relatively small embayment on the island of Lesvos, serves as a representative example of a semi-enclosed, shallow marine system in Greece. Previous studies revealed that the gulf seafloor is occupied by numerous small reefs that are evenly distributed. Recently, seismic surveys together with gravity coring have shown numerous relict reefs within a fine-grained matrix, hosted at different stratigraphic levels above the inferred Holocene/Pleistocene boundary and locally extending up to the present seabed. The reefs are primarily engineered by the bivalve Ostrea edulis, with additional colonization by other marine organisms such as the coral Cladocora caespitosa. Key features identified in the seismic profiles include the widespread distribution of buried reef structures, erosional surfaces and unconformities also related to a paleolake, extensive fluid concentrations, and a major fault system paralleling the northeastern coast. Seismic record analysis and sediment dating suggest that the flooding of Gera Gulf began approximately 7500 BP, with O. edulis colonizing the seabed shortly thereafter. Buried reef structures were identified within the transgressive and highstand system tracts, characterized by varying sedimentation rates. These variations reflect changing environmental conditions, probably linked to specific climatic events during the Holocene epoch, which contributed to the evolution and shaping of the oyster reef terrain. Given the limited studies on recent or buried oyster reefs in similar environments, this study provides critical insights into the Holocene evolution of oyster reef terrains and their response to climate changes. The study of marine and terrestrial palynomorphs in fluviomarine environments has been successfully used in combination with different geophysical approaches to understand high-resolution relative sea-level oscillations and to reconstruct the environmental changes affecting estuaries and adjacent inland ecosystems. However, erosion during the postglacial marine transgression frequently causes sedimentary discontinuities or may lead to the redeposition of ancient upland sediments, including secondary, recycled and rebedded pollen. Therefore, a robust seismic and chronological control of the sedimentary facies is essential. In addition, studies of modern pollen sedimentation and its relationship to contemporaneous vegetation are valuable for obtaining a more realistic interpretation of the sedimentary evidence. To explore the significance of the experimental evidence obtained and to support the interpretation of sedimentary records from the same basin, we analysed a large set of modern pollen data from the Ría de Vigo (NW Iberia). The pollen samples derived from different sedimentary environments were compared with the local and regional vegetation cover. Pollen evidence from the various limnetic systems studied allows the identification of major vegetation types in the basin. However, in all the cases, the reconstructed relative pollen contributions of each vegetation unit are often distorted by the overrepresentation of certain anemophilous pollen types, the underrepresentation of some entomophilous species, and the specific taphonomy of each site of sedimentation. The ability of the seabed pollen evidence to represent the modern deciduous and alluvial forests, as well as the saltmarsh vegetation onshore, increases in the shallowest points of the ria (shallower than −10 m). Conversely, pastures and crops are better represented at intermediate depths (shallower than −30 m), while scrubland vegetation is better represented in samples at more than 20 m below modern sea level. It is concluded that shallow seabed pollen can provide information on the main elements of the modern vegetation cover of the emerged basin, including the main elements of the vegetation cover. However, the selection of the most suitable subtidal sites for coring, combined with pollen data from several environmental contexts, is critical for achieving an accurate reconstruction of the changing conditions of the emerged basin over time. This study focuses on the analysis of sediment core retrieved from the deepest part (25 m) of Pirovac Bay. A long sedimentary sequence (7.45 m) supplemented by a shorter sediment core (1.45 m) from a shallower part of the bay was analyzed for sedimentological, mineralogical, geochemical, and micropaleontological (ostracod) parameters. The sediment thickness above the underlying karst paleorelief (karstic bedrock) is up to 12 m. Sediments recorded a transition from a freshwater to a marine environment starting from post-Neapolitan Yellow Tuff tephra sedimentation. First, the floodplain developed in Pirovac Bay, with intermittent pools and ponds, followed by wetland environment. The formation of a shallow freshwater paleolake during the Middle Holocene at 10 cal kyr BP was enabled by the rising sea level and high freshwater input from the karstified underground from the adjacent Lake Vrana (Biograd na Moru). The onset of marine intrusions through the karstified underground is evident with formation of a brackish lake in the Pirovac Bay basin. Marine transgression and flooding of the bay occurred at 7.3 cal kyr BP, evidenced by the geochemical and ostracod parameters, providing crucial insights into the dynamics of coastal inundation under past climate change. Intriguingly, freshwater ostracod species were still present in the marine sediments, brought into the bay from Lake Vrana through surficial canal Prosika and groundwater discharge (numerous estavelles) along the northeastern shores of the bay, proving their mutual influence. This submerged Holocene freshwater paleolake, reported here for the first time, underlines the sensitivity of coastal karst systems to the rise in sea level and serves to stress how important understanding of these processes is for effective management in coastal zone and climate change adaptation strategies. The findings provided evidence supporting the existence of coastal marine basins as freshwater lakes prior to being flooded by seawater as a consequence of the Holocene post-glacial sea level rise. Reconstructing the Environmental Conditions in the Prehistoric Coastal Landscape of SE Lemnos Island (Greece) Since the Late Glacial

Agia Bay is located on the southeastern coast of Lemnos Island. The coastal area today is characterized by aeolian sandy deposits (dunes). The systematic investigation of a 15.5-m long sediment core from the coastal plain of Agia Bay aimed to shed light to the paleoenvironmental evolution of the area that prehistoric groups occupied. The exhaustive study of the faunal and floral remains of the deposits including benthic foraminifera, ostracods, mollusks, pollen, and dinoflagellate cysts as well as plant remains was further supported by sedimentological, micromorphological, and elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements, ERT, and absolute dating. Four main evolutionary stages have been identified since the Late Glacial. At the base of the sequence, the fluvial activity dominated the sedimentation in the area forming a small shallow wetland, while after 12,500 cal BP, a marine signal was observed at the wetland. At 7500 cal BP, the wetland increased in size and depth, whereas at 6000 up to 4000 cal BP, a connection of the wetland to the sea was established, and an inner lagoon formed. After 4000 cal BP, a nearshore environment developed due to the sea-level rise. Pollen assemblages record the occurrence of a mixed deciduous oak forest in the island interior around 6000 cal BP, while after 5000 cal BP, an expansion of Mediterranean vegetation, shaped by human activity, is inferred. Contamination of marine ecosystems by pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) deserves more research since their environmental fate differs from that observed in freshwater systems. However, knowledge remains scarce, especially in semi-arid coastal regions of the Global South. This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of caffeine, carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole in sediments from the La Paz lagoon, a coastal system in a semi-arid region of Mexico with inverse estuarine conditions. Samples of superficial sediments (0–5 cm depth) were collected from 18 sampling points distributed through the lagoon, encompassing sites heavily polluted by discharges of municipal sewage and 3 potentially pristine sites far from the urban and peri-urban zones. Also, a 25 cm length sediment core was taken and divided into 1 cm sub-samples to determine the deposition of target PhACs in the sediment bed through time. The extraction of the target PhACs was performed through the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) technique and quantification was achieved using a validated HPLC-MS/MS analytical method. The concentration of caffeine, carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole in superficial sediment oscillated in the range of 1 to 45 ng g−1 (dry weight). The highest mass fraction of target PhACs was detected in sites impacted by wastewater discharges. The caffeine-to-carbamazepine ratio was determined for the first time in marine sediments impacted by wastewater discharges, resulting in values from 4.2 to 9.12. Analysis of the 25 cm length sediment core revealed a high dispersion of caffeine, which was attributed to high water solubility, while antibiotics were predominantly detected in the upper 20 cm of the core. Risk quotients were calculated, observing low risk for caffeine, carbamazepine, and ciprofloxacin, while sulfamethoxazole presented high risk in all the sampling points. PhACs are retained in superficial sediments from a lagoon impacted by wastewater discharges, and the level of impact depends on the properties of the compounds and the TOC content in sediments. Risk assessments should be performed in the future considering the combination of pharmaceuticals and byproducts in marine sediments. This research emphasizes the importance of sewage management in preserving marine ecosystems in semi-arid regions in the Global South. Full article

The Storegga slide tsunami (SST) at ca. 8100 ± 100–250 cal BP is known to be the largest tsunami that affected the North Sea during the entire Holocene. Geological traces of tsunami landfall were discovered along the coasts of Norway, Scotland, England, Denmark, the Faroes and Shetland Islands. So far, the German North Sea coast has been considered as being well protected due to the wide continental shelf and predominant shallow water depths, both assumed to dissipate tsunami wave energy significantly, thus hindering SST propagation dynamics. The objective of our research was to clarify if the SST reached the German Bight and if corresponding sediment markers can be found. Our research was based on the in-depth investigation of a 5 m long section of the research core Garding-2 from Eiderstedt Peninsula near Garding in North Frisia known from a previous study. For this, we newly recovered sediment core Garding-2A at exactly the same coring location as core Garding-2. Additionally, high-resolution Direct Push sensing data were collected to gain undisturbed stratigraphic information. Multi-proxy analyses of sediment material (grain size, geochemical, geochronological and microfaunal data) were carried out to reconstruct palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographical conditions. We identified a high-energy event layer with sedimentological (e.g., erosional unconformity, rip-up clasts, fining-upward), microfaunal (e.g., strongly mixed foraminiferal assemblage) and other features typical of tsunami influence and identical in age with the SST, dated to ca. 8.15 ka cal BP. The event layer was deposited at or maximum ca. 1–1.5 m below the local contemporary relative sea level and several tens of kilometers inland from the coastline within the palaeo-Eider estuarine system beyond the reach of storm surges. Tsunami facies and geochronological data correspond well with SST signatures identified on the nearby island of Rømø. SST candidate deposits identified at Garding represent the southernmost indications of this event in the southeastern North Sea. They give evidence, for the first time, of high-energy tsunami landfall along the German North Sea coast and tsunami impact related to the Storegga slide. SST deposits seem to have been subsequently reworked and redeposited over centuries until the site was affected by the Holocene marine transgression around 7 ka cal BP (7.3–6.5 ka cal BP). Moreover, the transgression initiated energetically and ecologically stable shallow marine conditions within an Eider-related tidal channel, lasting several millennia. It is suggested that the SST was not essentially weakened across the shallow continental shelf of the North Sea, but rather caused tsunami run-up of several meters (Rømø Island) or largely intruded estuarine systems tens of kilometers inland (North Frisia, this study). We, therefore, assume that the southern North Sea coast was generally affected by the SST but sedimentary signals have not yet been identified or have been misinterpreted. Our findings suggest that the German North Sea coast is not protected from tsunami events, as assumed so far, but that tsunamis are also a phenomenon in this region. Full article

Greece is expanding its energy grid system with submarine power and fiber optic cables between the mainland and the Aegean Sea islands. Additionally, pipelines have been installed to support natural gas facilities, and sites are being demarcated for the development of offshore wind parks. The above developments have necessitated extensive geotechnical surveying of the seabed; however, the survey data cannot be accessed for academic inspection or for desktop studies of future developments. This is further hindered by the limited geotechnical information in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. This review examines the existing information concerning the geotechnical behavior of the surficial sedimentary layers, including certain challenges associated with geotechnical sampling and CPTu interpretation. Certain prospects are discussed regarding marine geotechnical research in Greece, with examples from other European countries. The marine geotechnical data in Greece include geotechnical analyses of sediments cores and slope stability estimations, which are commonly associated with the seismic profiling of unstable slope areas. Underlying mechanisms of slope failure have mainly been attributed to the interbedded presence of weak layers (e.g., sapropels, tephra and underconsolidated sediments), the presence of gas and the cyclic loading from earthquake activity. Due to the limited geotechnical information, geological studies have contributed considerably to describing the distributions of gravity-induced events and lithostratigraphy. Within this context, a geological/geotechnical database is suggested where data can be collated and utilized for future studies. Full article

Paleoenvironmental Transition during the Rhuddanian–Aeronian and Its Implications for Lithofacies Evolution and Shale Gas Exploration: Insights from the Changning Area, Southern Sichuan Basin, South-West China

During the Rhuddanian–Aeronian interglacial period, global geological events such as glacial melting, synsedimentary volcanic activity, biological resurgence, and large-scale marine transgressions caused frequent fluctuations in paleoproductivity, climate changes, and sea level variations. These paleoenvironmental transitions directly influenced the development characteristics of shale lithofacies. This study investigates the Longmaxi Formation shale in the Changning area in the Southern Sichuan basin, focusing on 28 core samples from Well N1. Using scanning electron microscopy, QEMSCAN, TOC, XRD, and major and trace element analyses, we reconstructed the paleoenvironmental transitions of this period and explored their control over shale lithofacies types and mineral compositions. Four shale lithofacies were identified: carbonate rich lithofacies (CRF), biogenic quartz-rich lithofacies (BQRF), detrital clay-rich lithofacies (CRDF), and detrital quartz-rich lithofacies (DQRF). During the Rhuddanian period, rising global temperatures caused glacial melting and rapid marine transgressions. The low oxygen levels in bottom waters, combined with upwelling and abundant volcanic material, led to high paleoproductivity. This period primarily developed BQRF and CRF. Rich nutrients and abundant siliceous organisms, along with anoxic to anaerobic conditions, provided the material basis and preservation conditions for high biogenic quartz and organic matter content. High paleoproductivity and anoxic conditions also facilitated the precipitation of synsedimentary calcite and supplied Mg2+ and SO42− for the formation of iron-poor dolomite via sulfate reduction. From the Late Rhuddanian to the Mid-Aeronian, the Guangxi orogeny caused sea levels to fall, increasing water oxidation and reducing upwelling and volcanic activity, which lowered paleoproductivity. Rapid sedimentation rates, stepwise global temperature increases, and the intermittent intensification of weathering affected terrigenous clastic input, resulting in the alternating deposition of CRF, CRDF, and DQRF. Two favorable shale gas reservoirs were identified from the Rhuddanian–Aeronian period: Type I (BQRF) in the L1–L3 Layers, characterized by high TOC and brittleness, and Type II (DQRF) in the L4 Layer, with significant detrital quartz content. The Type I-favorable reservoir supports ongoing gas production, and the Type II-favorable reservoir offers potential as a future exploration target. Full article
