Nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) are essential macronutrients for plants whose functions and interactions profoundly influence plant physiological metabolism, environmental adaptation, and agricultural production efficiency. This review summarizes research advances in plant N and K nutrition and their interaction mechanisms, elucidating the key physiological functions of N and K individually and their respective absorption and transport mechanisms involving transporters such as NRTs and HAKs/KUPs. The review discusses the types of nutrient interactions (synergism and antagonism), with a primary focus on the physiological basis of N–K interactions and their interplay in root absorption and transport (e.g., K+-NO3 co-transport; NH4+ inhibition of K+ uptake), photosynthesis (jointly optimizing CO2 conductance, mesophyll conductance, and N allocation within photosynthetic machinery to enhance photosynthetic N use efficiency, PNUE), as well as sensing, signaling, co-regulation, and metabolism. This review emphasizes that N–K balance is crucial for improving crop yield and quality, enhancing fertilizer use efficiency (NUE/KUE), and reducing environmental pollution. Consequently, developing effective N–K management strategies based on these interaction mechanisms and implementing Balanced Fertilization Techniques (BFT) to optimize N–K ratios and application strategies in agricultural production represent vital pathways for ensuring food security, addressing resource constraints, and advancing green, low-carbon agriculture, including through coordinated management of greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigates the production and economic feasibility of biochar for smallholder and family farms in Central Amazonia, with potential implications for other tropical regions. The costs of construction of a prototype mobile kiln and biochar production were evaluated, using small-sized biomass from acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) agro-industrial residues as feedstock. The biochar produced was characterised in terms of its liming capacity (calcium carbonate equivalence, CaCO3eq), nutrient content via organic fertilisation methods, and ash analysis by ICP-OES. Field trials with cowpea assessed economic outcomes, as well scenarios of fractional biochar application and cost comparison between biochar production in the prototype kiln and a traditional earth-brick kiln. The prototype kiln showed production costs of USD 0.87–2.06 kg−1, whereas traditional kiln significantly reduced costs (USD 0.03–0.08 kg−1). Biochar application alone increased cowpea revenue by 34%, while combining biochar and lime raised cowpea revenues by up to 84.6%. Owing to high input costs and the low value of the crop, the control treatment generated greater net revenue compared to treatments using lime alone. Moreover, biochar produced in traditional kilns provided a 94% increase in net revenue compared to liming. The estimated externalities indicated that carbon credits represented the most significant potential source of income (USD 2217 ha−1). Finally, fractional biochar application in ten years can retain over 97% of soil carbon content, demonstrating potential for sustainable agriculture and carbon sequestration and a potential further motivation for farmers if integrated into carbon markets. Public policies and technological adaptations are essential for facilitating biochar adoption by small-scale tropical farmers. Full article

Ecosystem restoration represents a promising solution for enhancing ecosystem services and environmental sustainability. However, border regions—characterized by ecological fragility and geopolitical complexity—remain underrepresented in ecosystem service and restoration research. To fill this gap, we coupled spatially explicit models (e.g., InVEST and RUSLE) with scenario analysis to quantify the ecosystem service potential that could be achieved in China’s Tibetan borderlands under two interacting agendas: ecological restoration and border-strengthening policies. Restoration feasibility was evaluated through combining local biophysical constraints, economic viability (via restoration-induced carbon gains vs. opportunity costs), operational practicality, and simulated infrastructure expansion. The results showed that per-unit-area ecosystem services in border counties (particularly Medog, Cona, and Zayu) exceed that of interior Tibet by a factor of two to four. Combining these various constraints, approximately 4–17% of the border zone remains cost-effective for grassland or forest restoration. Under low carbon pricing (US$10 t−1 CO2), the carbon revenue generated through restoration is insufficient to offset the opportunity cost of agricultural production, constituting a major constraint. Habitat quality, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration increase modestly when induced by restoration, but a pronounced carbon–water trade-off emerges. Planned infrastructure reduces restoration benefits only slightly, whereas raising the carbon price to about US$50 t−1 CO2 substantially expands such benefits. These findings highlight both the opportunities and limits of ecosystem restoration in border regions and point to carbon pricing as the key policy lever for unlocking cost-effective restoration. Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of the global economy, but it increasingly faces sustainability challenges in meeting rising food demands. The intensive use of mineral fertilizers not only improves yields, but also causes negative environmental impacts such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions, water eutrophication, and soil degradation. To develop more sustainable solutions, the focus is on organic fertilizers, which are produced using waste and biostimulants such as amino acids. The aim of this study was to develop and characterize liquid nitrogen–calcium–magnesium fertilizers produced by decomposing dolomite with nitric acid followed by further processing and to enrich them with a powdered amino acid concentrate Naturamin-WSP and liquid extracts from digestate, a by-product of biogas production. Nutrient-rich extracts were obtained using water and potassium hydroxide solutions, with the latter proving more effective by yielding a higher organic carbon content (4495 ± 0.52 mg/L) and humic substances, which can improve soil structure. The produced fertilizers demonstrated favourable physical properties, including appropriate viscosity and density, as well as low crystallization temperatures (eutectic points from –3 to –34 °C), which are essential for storage and application in cold climates. These properties were achieved by adjusting the content of nitrogenous compounds and bioactive extracts. The results of the study show that liquid fertilizers enriched with organic matter can be an effective and more environmentally friendly alternative to mineral fertilizers, contributing to the development of the circular economy and sustainable agriculture. The rhizosphere microbiome plays an important role in carbon- and nitrogen-cycling in soil and in the stress response of plants. It also affects the function of the ammonium transporter (AmtB) that senses nitrogen levels inside and outside the cells of the associative nitrogen-fixing bacterium GXGL-4A. However, the potential mechanism of the interaction between the AmtB deletion mutant of GXGL-4A (∆amtB) and microorganisms in the rhizosphere of plants under low-nitrogen stress is still unclear. As revealed by transcriptome analyses, mutation of the amtB gene in GXGL-4A resulted in a significant up-regulation of many functional genes associated with nitrogen fixation and transportation at transcription level. The application of ∆amtB changed the nitrogen level in the rhizosphere of cucumber seedlings and reshaped the microbial community structure in the rhizosphere, enriching the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Gemmatimonadota. Based on bacterial functional prediction analyses, the metabolic capacities of rhizobacteria were improved after inoculation of cucumber seedlings with the original strain GXGL-4A or the ∆amtB mutant, resulting in the enhancement of amino acids, lipids, and carbohydrates in the cucumber rhizosphere, which promoted the growth of cucumber plants under a low-nitrogen stress condition. The results contribute to understanding the biological function of gene amtB, revealing the regulatory role of the strain GXGL-4A on cucumber rhizosphere nitrogen metabolism and laying a theoretical foundation for the development of efficient nitrogen-fixing bacterial agents for sustainable agricultural production. Understanding the carbon emission efficiency of apple production (APCEE) is critical for promoting green and low-carbon agricultural development. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving factors of APCEE in China remain inadequately explored. This study employs life cycle assessment, super-efficiency slacks-based measures, and a panel Tobit model to evaluate the carbon footprint, APCEE, and its determinants in China’s two major production regions from 2003 to 2022. The results reveal that: (1) Producing one ton of apples in China results in 0.842 t CO2e emissions. Land carbon intensity and total carbon emissions peaked in 2010 (28.69 t CO2e/ha) and 2014 (6.52 × 107 t CO2e), respectively, exhibiting inverted U-shaped trends. Carbon emissions from various production areas show significant differences, with higher pressure on carbon emission reduction in the Loess Plateau region, especially in Gansu Province. (2) The APCEE in China exhibits a W-shaped trend (mean: 0.645), with overall low efficiency loss. The Bohai Bay region outperforms the Loess Plateau and national averages. (3) The structure of the apple industry, degree of agricultural mechanization, and green innovation positively influence APCEE, while the structure of apple cultivation, education level, and agricultural subsidies negatively impact it. Notably, green innovation and agricultural subsidies display lagged effects. Moreover, the drivers of APCEE differ significantly between the two major production regions. These findings provide actionable pathways for the green and low-carbon transformation of China’s apple industry, emphasizing the importance of spatially tailored green policies and technology-driven decarbonization strategies. The life-cycle carbon emissions (LCCE) assessment of dairy barns is crucial for identifying low-carbon transition pathways and promoting the sustainable development of the dairy industry. We applied a life cycle assessment approach integrated with building information modeling and EnergyPlus to establish a full life cycle inventory of the material quantities and energy consumption for dairy barns. The LCCE was quantified from the production to end-of-life stages using the carbon equivalent of dairy barns (CEDB) as the functional unit, expressed in kg CO2e head−1 year−1. A carbon emission assessment model was developed based on the “building–process–energy” framework. The LCCE of the open barn and the lower profile cross-ventilated (LPCV) barn were 152 kg CO2e head−1 year−1 and 229 kg CO2e head−1 year−1, respectively. Operational carbon emissions (OCE) accounted for the largest share of LCCE, contributing 57% and 74%, respectively. For embodied carbon emissions (ECE), the production of building materials dominated, representing 91% and 87% of the ECE, respectively. Regarding carbon mitigation strategies, the use of extruded polystyrene boards reduced carbon emissions by 45.67% compared with stone wool boards and by 36% compared with polyurethane boards. Employing a manure pit emptying system reduced carbon emissions by 76% and 74% compared to manure scraping systems. Additionally, the adoption of clean electricity resulted in a 33% reduction in OCE, leading to an overall LCCE reduction of 22% for the open barn and 26% for the LPCV barn. This study introduces the CEDB to evaluate low-carbon design strategies for dairy barns, integrating building layout, ventilation systems, and energy sources in a unified assessment approach, providing valuable insights for the low-carbon transition of agricultural buildings. In recent years, great attention has been paid to second-generation (from agricultural and industrial wastes) lactic acid (LA) production. In the present study, the possibility of two Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains, namely 53 and 2HS, to produce LA from waste materials was investigated. Distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS), spent coffee grounds (SCG), wood chips, and cheese whey were used as substrates after pretreatment, and the results were compared with those with lactose as a carbon source. Both strains were capable of assimilating sugars from all waste materials. Nearly 20 g/L LA from 23 g/L reducing sugars (RS) obtained from DDGS, 22 g/L LA from 21 g/L RS from SCG, and 22 g/L LA from 21 g/L whey lactose were produced compared to 22 g/L LA obtained from 22 g/L lactose monohydrate in the fermentation broth. The wood chip hydrolysate (WH) contains only 10 g/L RS, and its fermentation resulted in the production of 5 g/L LA. This amount is twice as low as that produced from 11 g/L lactose monohydrate. A mathematical model was constructed based on the Compertz and Luedeking–Piret equations. Full article

This study presents a cost-effective, carbon-negative construction material for affordable housing, developed entirely from locally available agricultural wastes: rice husk ash, wood ash, and rice straw—materials often problematic to dispose of in many African regions. Rice husk ash provides high amorphous silica, acting as a strong pozzolanic agent. Wood ash contributes calcium oxide and alkalis to serve as a reactive binder, while rice straw functions as a lightweight organic filler, enhancing thermal insulation and indoor climate comfort. These materials undergo natural pozzolanic reactions with water, eliminating the need for Portland cement—a major global source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (~900 kg CO2/ton cement). This process is inherently carbon-negative, not only avoiding emissions from cement production but also capturing atmospheric CO2 during lime carbonation in the hardening phase. Field trials in Kenya confirmed the composite’s sufficient structural strength for low-cost housing, with added benefits including termite resistance and suitability for unskilled laborers. In a collaboration between the University of Tartu and Kenyatta University, a semi-automatic mixing and casting system was developed, enabling fast, low-labor construction of full-scale houses. This innovation aligns with Kenya’s Big Four development agenda and supports sustainable rural development, post-disaster reconstruction, and climate mitigation through scalable, eco-friendly building solutions. Carbon Footprint and Energy Balance Analysis of Rice-Wheat Rotation System in East China

The rice-wheat rotation is the main agricultural cropping system in Jiangsu Province, playing a vital role in ensuring food security and promoting economic development. However, current research on rice-wheat systems mainly focuses on in-situ controlled experiments at the point scale, with limited studies addressing carbon footprint (CF) and energy balance (EB) at the regional scale and long time series. Therefore, we analyzed the evolution patterns of the CF and EB of the rice-wheat system in Jiangsu Province from 1980 to 2022, as well as their influencing factors. The results showed that the sown area and total yield of rice and wheat exhibited an increasing–decreasing–increasing trend during 1980–2022, while the yield per unit area increased continuously. The CF of rice and wheat increased by 4172.27 kg CO2 eq ha−1 and 2729.18 kg CO2 eq ha−1, respectively, with the greenhouse gas emissions intensity (GHGI) showing a fluctuating upward trend. Furthermore, CH4 emission, nitrogen (N) fertilizer, and irrigation were the main factors affecting the CF of rice, with proportions of 36%, 20.26%, and 17.34%, respectively. For wheat, N fertilizer, agricultural diesel, compound fertilizer, and total N2O emission were the primary contributors, accounting for 42.39%, 22.54%, 13.65%, and 13.14%, respectively. Among energy balances, the net energy (NE) of rice exhibited an increasing and then fluctuating trend, while that of wheat remained relatively stable. The energy utilization efficiency (EUE), energy productivity (EPD), and energy profitability (EPF) of rice showed an increasing and then decreasing trend, while wheat decreased by 46.31%, 46.31%, and 60.62% during 43 years, respectively. Additionally, N fertilizer, agricultural diesel, and compound fertilizer accounted for 43.91–45.37%, 21.63–25.81%, and 12.46–20.37% of energy input for rice and wheat, respectively. Moreover, emission factors and energy coefficients may vary over time, which is an important consideration in the analysis of long-term time series. This study analyzes the ecological and environmental effects of the rice-wheat system in Jiangsu Province, which helps to promote the development of agriculture in a green, low-carbon, and high-efficiency direction. It also offers a theoretical basis for constructing a low-carbon sustainable agricultural production system. Full article

The Impact of Rural Digital Economy Development on Agricultural Carbon Emission Efficiency: A Study of the N-Shaped Relationship

This study investigates the impact of rural digital economy development on agricultural carbon emission efficiency, aiming to elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms and pathways through which digital technology enables low-carbon transformation in agriculture, thereby contributing to the achievement of agricultural carbon neutrality goals. Based on provincial-level panel data from China spanning 2011 to 2022, this study examines the relationship between the rural digital economy and agricultural carbon emission efficiency, along with its underlying mechanisms, using bidirectional fixed effects models, mediation effect analysis, and Spatial Durbin Models. The results indicate the following: (1) A significant N-shaped-curve relationship exists between rural digital economy development and agricultural carbon emission efficiency. Specifically, agricultural carbon emission efficiency exhibits a three-phase trajectory of “increase, decrease, and renewed increase” as the rural digital economy advances, ultimately driving a sustained improvement in efficiency. (2) Industrial integration acts as a critical mediating mechanism. Rural digital economy development accelerates the formation of the N-shaped curve by promoting the integration between agriculture and other sectors. (3) Spatial spillover effects significantly influence agricultural carbon emission efficiency. Due to geographical proximity, regional diffusion, learning, and demonstration effects, local agricultural carbon emission efficiency fluctuates with changes in neighboring regions’ digital economy development levels. (4) The relationship between rural digital economy development and agricultural carbon emission efficiency exhibits a significant inverted N-shaped pattern in regions with higher marketization levels, planting-dominated areas of southeast China, and digital economy demonstration zones. Further analysis reveals that within rural digital economy development, production digitalization and circulation digitalization demonstrate a more pronounced inverted N-shaped relationship with agricultural carbon emission efficiency. This study proposes strategic recommendations to maximize the positive impact of the rural digital economy on agricultural carbon emission efficiency, unlock its spatially differentiated contribution potential, identify and leverage inflection points of the N-shaped relationship between digital economy development and emission efficiency, and implement tailored policy portfolios—ultimately facilitating agriculture’s green and low-carbon transition. In order to achieve the efficient utilization of agricultural by-products and overcome the bottleneck of animal feed shortages in dry seasons, this study utilized corn stover (CS; Zea mays L.) as a material to systematically investigate the dynamic changes in the fermentation quality, bacterial community structure, and pathogenic risk of silage under different fermentation times (0, 3, 7, 15, and 30 days). CS has high nutritive value, including crude protein and sugar, and can serve as a carbon source and a nitrogen source for silage fermentation. After ensiling, CS silage (CSTS) exhibited excellent fermentation quality, characterized by relatively high lactic acid content, low pH, and ammonia nitrogen content within an acceptable range. In addition, neither propionic acid nor butyric acid was detected in any of the silages. CS exhibited high α-diversity, with Serratia marcescens being the dominant bacterial species. After ensiling, the α-diversity significantly (p < 0.05) decreased, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was the dominant species during the fermentation process. With the extension of fermentation days, the relative abundance of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum significantly (p < 0.05) increased, reaching a peak and stabilizing between 15 and 30 days. Ultimately, lactic acid bacteria dominated and constructed a microbial symbiotic network system. In the bacterial community of CSTS, the abundance of “potential pathogens” was significantly (p < 0.01) lower than that of CS. These results provide data support for establishing a microbial regulation theory for silage fermentation, thereby improving the basic research system for the biological conversion of agricultural by-products and alleviating feed shortages in dry seasons. Gasification of municipal solid waste and other biogenic residues (e.g., biomass and biowaste) is increasingly recognized as a promising thermochemical pathway for converting non-recyclable fractions into valuable energy carriers, with applications in electricity generation, district heating, hydrogen production, and synthetic fuels. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of major gasification technologies, including fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained flow, plasma, supercritical water, microwave-assisted, high-temperature steam, and rotary kiln systems. Key aspects such as feedstock compatibility, operating parameters, technology readiness level, and integration within circular economy frameworks are critically evaluated. A comparative assessment of incineration and pyrolysis highlights the environmental and energetic advantages of gasification. The valorization pathways for main product (syngas) and by-products (syngas, ash, tar, and biochar) are also explored, emphasizing their reuse in environmental, agricultural, and industrial applications. Despite progress, large-scale adoption in Europe is constrained by economic, legislative, and technical barriers. Future research should prioritize scaling emerging systems, optimizing by-product recovery, and improving integration with carbon capture and circular energy infrastructures. Supported by recent European policy frameworks, gasification is positioned to play a key role in sustainable waste-to-energy strategies, biomass valorization, and the transition to a low-emission economy. The advantages of torrefaction preheating, including the production of a hydrophobic solid product, improved particle size distribution, enhanced fuel properties with fewer environmental issues, decreased moisture content, and reduced volatile content. In order to meet the technical requirements of biomass oriented value-added and energy saving and emission reduction, pine sawdust (PS) was taken as the research object, and the physicochemical properties of the PS samples preheated at a low temperature were analyzed by synchronous thermal analysis (TG-DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and organic element analyzer (EA). The effect of preheating at a lower temperature on the physicochemical properties of PS was discussed. The results showed that, under the preheating condition of 200 °C, compared with PS, the water content of PS-200 decreased by 3.23%, the volatile content decreased by 3.69%, the fixed carbon increased by 6.81%, the calorific value increased by 6.90%, the equilibrium water content decreases from 7.06% to 4.46%, and the hydrophobicity increases. This research, based on the improvement of the quality of agricultural and forestry waste and the promotion of the strategy of converting waste into energy, has contributed to the advancement of sustainable energy production. We developed a novel and portable magnetic nanochannel electrochemical sensor for the sensitive detection of cadmium ions (Cd2+), which pose serious risks to food safety and human health. The sensor was fabricated by co-modifying an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanochannel membrane with a composite of glutathione (GSH) and ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4), denoted as GSH@Fe3O4. This modified membrane was then integrated with a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to construct the GSH@Fe3O4/GSH@AAO/SPCE sensing platform. The performance of the sensor was evaluated using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), which demonstrated a strong linear correlation between the peak current response and the concentration of Cd2+ in the range of 5–120 μg/L. The calibration equation was IDPV(μA) = −0.31 + 0.98·CCd2+(μg/L), with an excellent correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.999, n = 3). The calculated limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.1 μg/L, indicating the high sensitivity of the system. These results confirm the successful construction of the GSH@Fe3O4/GSH@AAO/SPCE portable nanochannel sensor. This innovative sensing platform provides a rapid, sensitive, and user-friendly approach for the on-site monitoring of heavy metal contamination in agricultural products, especially grains.
