Structural Optimization of Numerical Simulation for Spherical Grid-Structured Microporous Aeration Reactor

As the core equipment for efficient wastewater treatment, the internal structure of microporous aeration bioreactors directly determines the mass transfer efficiency and treatment performance. Based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology, this study explores the optimization mechanism of a Spherical Grid-Structured on the internal flow field of the reactor through a 3D numerical simulation system, aiming to improve the aeration efficiency and resource utilization. This study used a combination of experimental and numerical simulations to compare and analyze different configurations of the Spherical Grid-Structure. The simulation results show that the optimal equilibrium of the flow field inside the reactor is achieved when the diameter of the grid sphere is 2980 mm: the average flow velocity is increased by 22%, the uniformity of the pressure distribution is improved by 25%, and the peak turbulent kinetic energy is increased by 30%. Based on the Kalman vortex street theory, the periodic vortex induced by the grid structure refines the bubble size to 50–80 microns, improves the oxygen transfer efficiency by 20%, increases the spatial distribution uniformity of bubbles by 35%, and significantly reduces the dead zone volume from 28% to 16.8%, which is a decrease of 40%. This study reveals the quantitative relationship between the structural parameters of the grid and the flow field characteristics through a pure numerical simulation, which provides a theoretical basis and quantifiable optimization scheme for the structural design of the microporous aeration bioreactor, which is of great significance in promoting the development of low-energy and high-efficiency wastewater treatment technology. The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

The Kuroshio Current’s flow velocity imposes exacting requirements on underwater vehicle propulsive systems. Ecological preservation necessitates low-noise propeller designs to mitigate operational disturbances. As technological evolution advances toward greater intelligence and system integration, intelligent unmanned systems are positioning themselves as a critical frontier in marine innovation. In recent years, the global research community has increased its efforts towards the development of high-maneuverability underwater vehicles. However, propeller design optimization ignores the key balance between acoustic performance and hydrodynamic efficiency, as well as the appropriate speed threshold for blade rotation. In order to solve this problem, the propeller design of the NACA 65A010 airfoil is optimized by using OpenProp v3.3.4 and XFlow 2022 software, aiming at innovating the propulsion system of shallow water agile submersibles. The study presents an integrated design framework combining lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations synergized with fully Lagrangian-LES modeling, implementing rotational speed thresholds to detect cavitation inception, followed by advanced acoustic propagation analysis. Through rigorous comparative assessment of hydrodynamic metrics, we establish an optimization protocol for propeller selection tailored to littoral zone operational demands. Studies have shown that increasing the number of propeller blades can reduce the single-blade load and delay cavitation, but too many blades will aggravate the complexity of the flow field, resulting in reduced efficiency and noise rebound. It is concluded that the propeller with five blades, a diameter of 234 mm, and a speed of 500 RPM exhibits the best performance. Under these conditions, the water efficiency is 69.01%, and the noise is the lowest, which basically realizes the balance between hydrodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. This paradigm-shifting research carries substantial implications for next-generation marine vehicles, particularly in optimizing operational stealth and energy efficiency through intelligent propulsion architecture. A combination of lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)-based computations and Lagrangian particle tracking simulations is presented to study the dispersion and clustering of inertial particles in a forced homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow and to analyze the relative importance of the various forces acting on particles. The particle dynamics are investigated across a wide range of particle-to-fluid density ratios (from 0.01 to 1000) and Stokes numbers (from 1.4 × 10−6 to 55.4), at a Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 33.6. Particle clustering is quantified using Voronoï tessellations. Results confirm that clustering intensity is maximized at Stokes numbers around unity, where particles preferentially accumulate in low-vorticity regions. Particle dynamics within the turbulent flow considered here vary fundamentally with density and size, even among tracer-like particles. Low-density and neutrally buoyant particles mimic tracers via either velocity matching or acceleration balance, while dense particles follow inertia-dominated dynamics. Full article

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

Flooding due to dam failures is a critical issue with significant impacts on human safety, infrastructure, and the environment. This study assessed the potential flood hazard that could be generated from breaching of the Alacranes dam in Villa Clara, Cuba. Thirteen reservoir breaching scenarios were simulated under several criteria for modeling the flood wave through the 2D Saint Venant equations using the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). A sensitivity analysis was performed on Manning’s roughness coefficient, demonstrating a low variability of the model outputs for these events. The results show that, for all modeled scenarios, the terrain topography of the coastal plain expands the flood wave, reaching a maximum width of up to 105,057 km. The most critical scenario included a 350 m breach in just 0.67 h. Flood, velocity, and hazard maps were generated, identifying populated areas potentially affected by the flooding events. The reported depths, velocities, and maximum flows could pose extreme danger to infrastructure and populated areas downstream. These types of studies are crucial for both risk assessment and emergency planning in the event of a potential dam breach. Full article

Considering the serious hazard of respiratory dust in underground coal mines and the low efficiency of traditional dust-reduction technology, this study optimizes the atomisation parameters of the gas–liquid two-phase flow nozzle through numerical simulation and experimental testing, and designs an on-board dust-reduction system. Based on the Fluent software (version 2023 R2), a flow field model outside the nozzle was established, and the effects of the air supply pressure, gas-phase inlet velocity, and droplet mass flow rate on the atomisation characteristics were analyzed. The results show that increasing the air supply pressure can effectively reduce the droplet particle size and increase the range and atomisation angle, and that the dust-reduction efficiency is significantly improved with the increase in pressure. The dust-reduction efficiency reached 69.3% at 0.6 MPa, which was the economically optimal operating condition. Based on the parameter optimization, this study designed an annular airborne gas–liquid two-phase flow dust-reduction system, and a field test showed that the dust-reduction efficiency of this system could reach up to 86.0%, which is 53.5% higher than that of traditional high-pressure spraying, and that the dust concentration was reduced to less than 6 mg/m3. This study provides an efficient and reliable technical solution for the management of underground coal mine dust and guidance for promoting the development of the coal industry. Full article

Sulfur particle deposition and wellbore blockage significantly hinder the productivity of high-sulfur gas wells, necessitating accurate prediction of the critical gas flow velocity to prevent deposition. This study presents a comprehensive force-based model to determine the critical gas flow velocity in vertical wells, explicitly incorporating adhesion, boundary layer effects, and particle detachment mechanisms. Through detailed analysis, the forces acting on sulfur particles of varying sizes and flow velocities, as well as the key factors influencing the critical gas flow velocity, were examined. The results demonstrated strong agreement with the experimental data, with a mean absolute percentage error of 6%, while revealing significant deviations from the conventional critical gas suspension velocity, validating the model’s enhanced accuracy and its necessity. This study identified adhesive forces as dominant for small particles (<100 µm) at low velocities (≤10 m/s), whereas gravitational and inertial forces prevailed for larger particles. Key parameters such as the particle size, sphericity, Hamaker constant, friction coefficient, and rolling arm length ratio critically influenced the deposition velocity and detachment mechanisms. These findings provide fundamental insights into sulfur deposition dynamics and establish a scientific basis for optimizing wellbore operations to mitigate sulfur accumulation and improve production efficiency in high-sulfur gas wells. Nokoué Lake is located in the south of Benin and is fed by the Ouémé and Sô Rivers. Its hydrosedimentary dynamics were modelled using Telemac2D, incorporating the main environmental factors of this complex ecosystem. The simulations accounted for flow rates and suspended solids concentrations during periods of high and low water. The main factors controlling sediment transport were identified. The model was validated using field measurements of water levels and suspended solids. The results show that the north–south current velocity ranges from 0.5 to 1 m/s during periods of high water and 0.1 to 0.5 m/s during low-water periods. Residual currents are influenced by rainfall, river discharge, and tides. Complex circulation patterns are caused by increased river flow during high water, while tides dominate during low water and transitional periods. The northern, western, and south-eastern parts of the lake have weak residual currents and are, therefore, deposition zones for fine sediments. The estimated average annual suspended solids load for 2022–2023 is 17 Mt. The model performance shows a strong agreement between the observed and simulated values: R2 = 0.91 and NSE = 0.93 for water levels and R2 = 0.86 and NSE = 0.78 for sediment transport. Full article

A slanted axial-flow pump is extensively applied in coastal pumping stations; however, severe bias flow within the outlet passage will result in unstable operation and low efficiency of the slanted axial flow pump system. In order to mitigate bias flow in a slanted axial-flow pump outlet passage, seven exit setting angle schemes of the guide vanes were designed. The influence mechanisms of the guide vane exit setting angle on internal flow characteristics, hydraulic loss, flow deviation coefficient, vortex evolution patterns, and pump system efficiency were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that under design flow conditions, as the exit setting angle of the guide vane ranges from 90° to 105°, the flow field in the first half of the guide vane remains essentially the same. The low-velocity region at the guide vane outlet demonstrates initial contraction followed by gradual expansion with increasing stagger angles. Looking downstream within the flow passage from the left to the right, the hydraulic loss in the outlet passage goes up after an initial descending trend as the exit setting angle increases. When the exit setting angle is 97.5°, the bias coefficient of the outlet passage is 1.031. At this point, the vortex core distribution intensity within the outlet passage reaches a minimum, corresponding to the lowest recorded hydraulic loss of 0.230 m. Compared with the original guide vane scheme, the scheme with an angle set at 97.5° can improve the pump system efficiency of the slanted axial flow pump system, whether the flow is set at a design point or at a large point, and the pump system efficiency is increased by 2.3% under design flow conditions. To compensate for the instability of renewable energy sources during China’s energy transition, large thermal power plants must provide critical operational flexibility, primarily through deep peaking. To investigate the combustion performance and wear and tear of a 600 MW pulverized coal boiler under deep peaking, the gas–solid flow characteristics and distributions of flue gas temperature, wall heat flux, and wall wear rate in a 600 MW tangentially fired pulverized coal boiler under variable loads (353 MW, 431 MW, 519 MW, and 600 MW) are investigated in this study employing computational fluid dynamics numerical simulation method. Results demonstrate that increasing the boiler load significantly amplifies gas velocity, wall heat flux, and wall wear rate. The maximum gas velocity in the furnace rises from 20.9 m·s−1 (353 MW) to 37.6 m·s−1 (600 MW), with tangential airflow forming a low-velocity central zone and high-velocity peripheral regions. Meanwhile, the tangential circle diameter expands by ~15% as the load increases. The flue gas temperature distribution exhibits a “low-high-low” profile along the furnace height. As the load increases from 353 MW to 600 MW, the primary combustion zone’s peak temperature rises from 1750 K to 1980 K, accompanied by a ~30% expansion in the coverage area of the high-temperature zone. Wall heat flux correlates strongly with temperature distribution, peaking at 2.29 × 105 W·m−2 (353 MW) and 2.75 × 105 W·m−2 (600 MW) in the primary combustion zone. Wear analysis highlights severe erosion in the economizer due to elevated flue gas velocities, with wall wear rates escalating from 3.29 × 10−7 kg·m−2·s−1 (353 MW) to 1.23 × 10−5 kg·m−2·s−1 (600 MW), representing a 40-fold increase under full-load conditions. Mitigation strategies, including ash removal optimization, anti-wear covers, and thermal spray coatings, are proposed to enhance operational safety. This work provides critical insights into flow field optimization and wear management for large-scale coal-fired boilers under flexible load operation. Full article

This study presents a scenario-based, two-dimensional flood modeling approach to assess the potential downstream impacts of a piping-induced dam failure triggered by seismic activity. The case study focuses on the Doğantepe Dam in northwestern Türkiye, located near an active branch of the North Anatolian Fault. Critical deformation zones were previously identified through PLAXIS 2D seismic analyses, which served as the physical basis for a dam break scenario. This scenario was modeled using the HEC-RAS 2D platform, incorporating high-resolution topographic data, reservoir capacity, and spatially varying Manning’s roughness coefficients. The simulation results show that the flood wave reaches downstream settlements within the first 30 min, with water depths exceeding 3.0 m in low-lying areas and flow velocities surpassing 6.0 m/s, reaching up to 7.0 m/s in narrow sections. Inundation extents and hydraulic parameters such as water depth and duration were spatially mapped to assess flood hazards. The study demonstrates that integrating physically based seismic deformation data with hydrodynamic modeling provides a realistic and applicable framework for evaluating flood risks and informing emergency response planning. Low regression rate is the most critical issue for the development and application of hybrid rocket motors (HRMs). Paraffin-based fuels are potential candidates for HRMs due to their high regression rates but adding polymers to improve strength results in insufficient regression rates for HRMs applications. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling and analysis were used to investigate the mixing and combustion of gaseous fuels and oxidizers in HRMs for various fuel grains and injector combinations. In addition, the regression rate characteristics and combustion efficiency were evaluated using a ground test. The results showed that the swirling flow with both high mixing intensity and high velocity could be formed by using the swirl injector. The highest mixing degree attained for the star-swirl grain and swirl injector was 86%. The reported combustion efficiency calculated by the CFD model attained a maximum of 93% at the nozzle throat. In addition, a spatially averaged regression rate of 1.40 mm·s−1 was achieved for the star-swirl grain and swirl injector combination when the mass flux of N2O was 89.94 kg·m−2·s−1. This is around 191% higher than the case of non-swirling flow. However, there were obvious local regression rate differences between the root of the star and the slot. The regression rate increase was accompanied by a decrease in the combustion efficiency for the strong swirling flow condition due to the remarkable higher mass flow rate of gasified fuels. It was shown that the nano-sized aluminum was unfavorable for the combustion efficiency, especially under extreme fuel-rich conditions. Full article

Double-suction centrifugal pumps are extensively employed in industrial applications owing to their high efficiency, low vibration, superior cavitation resistance, and operational durability. This study analyzes how impeller oblique cutting angles (0°, 6°, 9°, 12°) affect a double-suction pump at a fixed 4% trimming ratio and constant average post-trim diameter. Numerical simulations and tests reveal that under low-flow (0.7Qd) and design-flow conditions, the flat-cut (0°) minimizes reflux ratio and maximizes efficiency by aligning blade outlet flow with the mainstream. Increasing oblique cutting angles disrupts this alignment, elevating reflux and reducing efficiency. Conversely, at high flow (1.3Qd), the 12° bevel optimizes outlet flow, achieving peak efficiency. Pressure pulsation at the volute tongue (P11) peaks at the blade-passing frequency, with amplitudes significantly higher for 9°/12° bevels than for 0°/6°. The flat-cut suppresses wake vortices and static–rotor interaction, but oblique cutting angle choice critically influences shaft-frequency pulsation. Entropy analysis identifies the volute as the primary loss source. Larger oblique cutting angles intensify wall effects, increasing total entropy; pump chamber losses rise most sharply due to worsened outlet velocity non-uniformity and turbulent dissipation. The flat-cut yields minimal entropy at Qd. These findings provide a basis for tailoring impeller trimming to specific operational requirements. Furthermore, the systematic analysis provides critical guidance for impeller trimming strategies in other double-suction pumps and pumps as turbines in micro hydropower plants. Full article

This study investigates the nonlinear aeroelastic behavior and energy harvesting performance of a two-degrees-of-freedom NACA 0012 airfoil under varying reduced velocities and electrical load resistances. The system exhibits a range of dynamic responses, including periodic and chaotic states, governed by strong fluid–structure interactions. Nonlinear oscillations first appear near the critical reduced velocity Ur*=6, with large-amplitude limit-cycle oscillations emerging around Ur*=8 in the absence of the electrical loading. As the load resistance increases, this transition shifts to higher Ur*, reflecting the damping effect of the electrical load. Fourier spectra reveal the presence of odd and even superharmonics in the lift coefficient, indicating nonlinearities induced by fluid–structure coupling, which diminishes at higher resistances. Phase portraits and Poincaré maps capture transitions across dynamical regimes, from periodic to chaotic behavior, particularly at a low resistance. The voltage output correlates with variations in the lift force, reaching its maximum at an intermediate resistance before declining due to a suppressing nonlinearity. Flow visualizations identify various vortex shedding patterns, including single (S), paired (P), triplet (T), multiple-pair (mP) and pair with single (P + S) that weaken at higher resistances and reduced velocities. The results demonstrate that nonlinearity plays a critical role in efficient voltage generation but remains effective only within specific parameter ranges. Full article
