The study presents a comprehensive assessment of the combustion efficiency of low-grade coal from the Karazhyra deposit in small- and medium-capacity boiler units of the energy workshops operated by Vostokenergo LLP (East Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan). It was found that the average annual thermal energy output amounts to 2,387,348.85 GJ with a coal consumption of 164,328.5 tons. Based on operational data from 2016 to 2017, the average thermal efficiency (boiler efficiency) was 66.03%, with a maximum value of 75% recorded at the Zhezkent energy workshop. The average lower heating value (LHV) of the coal was 19.41 MJ/kg, which is below the design value of 20.52 MJ/kg, indicating the use of coal with reduced energy characteristics and elevated ash content (21.4%). The unburned carbon content in the ash and slag waste (ASW) was determined to be between 14 and 35%, indicating incomplete combustion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed the presence of microspheres, porous granules, and coal residues, with silicon and aluminum oxides dominating the composition (up to 70.49%). Differences in the pollutant potential of ash from different boiler units were identified. Recommendations were substantiated regarding the adjustment of the air–fuel regime, modernization of combustion control systems, and utilization of ASW. The results may be used to develop measures aimed at improving the energy efficiency and environmental safety of coal-fired boiler plants. Full article

The global transition towards a low-carbon energy system urgently demands efficient and safe energy storage solutions. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their inherent safety and environmental friendliness. However, conventional manufacturing methods are costly and labor-intensive, hindering their large-scale production. Recent advances in 3D printing technology offer innovative pathways to address these challenges. By combining design flexibility with material optimization, 3D printing holds the potential to enhance battery performance and enable customized structures. This review systematically examines the application of 3D printing technology in fabricating key AZIB components, including electrodes, electrolytes, and integrated battery designs. We critically compare the advantages and disadvantages of different 3D printing techniques for these components, discuss the potential and mechanisms by which 3D-printed structures enhance ion transport and electrochemical stability, highlight critical existing scientific questions and research gaps, and explore potential strategies for optimizing the manufacturing process. Secondary hypereutectic Al-Si alloys are attractive for sustainable manufacturing, yet their application is often limited by low strength and electrical conductivity due to impurity-induced microstructural defects. Achieving a balance between mechanical and conductive performance remains a significant challenge. In this work, nickel-coated carbon nanotubes (Ni-CNTs) were introduced into secondary Al-20Si alloys to tailor the microstructure and enhance properties through interfacial engineering. Composites containing 0 to 0.4 wt.% Ni-CNTs were fabricated by conventional casting and systematically characterized. The addition of 0.1 wt.% Ni-CNTs resulted in the best combination of properties, with a tensile strength of 170.13 MPa and electrical conductivity of 27.60% IACS. These improvements stem from refined α-Al dendrites, uniform eutectic Si distribution, and strong interfacial bonding. Strengthening was achieved through grain refinement, Orowan looping, dislocation generation from thermal mismatch, and the formation of reinforcing interfacial phases such as AlNi3C0.9 and Al4SiC4. At higher Ni-CNT contents, property degradation occurred due to agglomeration and phase coarsening. This study presents an effective and scalable strategy for achieving strength–conductivity synergy in secondary aluminum alloys via nanoscale interfacial design, offering guidance for the development of multifunctional lightweight materials. Direct Air Capture (DAC) is gaining worldwide attention as a negative emissions strategy critical to meeting climate targets. Among emerging DAC materials, pyrolysis chars (PCs) and gasification chars (GCs) derived from biomass present a promising pathway due to their tunable porosity, surface chemistry, and low-cost feedstocks. This review critically examines the current state of research on the physicochemical properties of PCs and GCs relevant to CO2 adsorption, including surface area, pore structure, surface functionality and aromaticity. Comparative analyses show that chemical activation, especially with KOH, can significantly improve CO2 adsorption capacity, with some PCs achieving more than 308 mg/g (100 kPa CO2, 25 °C). Additionally, nitrogen and sulfur doping further improves the affinity for CO2 through increased surface basicity. GCs, although inherently more porous, often require additional modification to achieve a similar adsorption capacity. Importantly, the long-term stability and regeneration potential of these chars remain underexplored, but are essential for practical DAC applications and economic viability. The paper identifies critical research gaps related to material design and techno-economic feasibility. Future directions emphasize the need for integrated multiscale research that bridges material science, process optimization, and real-world DAC deployment. A synthesis of findings and a research outlook are provided to support the advancement of carbon-negative technologies using thermochemically derived biomass chars. Full article

Thermal analysis (TA) has been a valuable tool for controlling the carbon equivalent (CE) of cast irons. Additionally, this technique can provide enhanced control over melt quality, allowing for the avoidance of defects such as undesirable graphite morphology and the formation of carbides. To obtain the most valuable information from the TA, it is necessary to minimize the variations in the filling operation of the TA cups. However, the mass and pouring temperature of TA cups can vary in TA’s typical foundry operations. A design of experiments was performed to determine whether specific parameters of cooling curves used for quality control can distinguish the inoculation effect in the melt when the mass and the pouring temperature of TA cups are varied. The minimum temperature of the eutectic arrest proved to be a robust inoculation potential control parameter when variations in the cup’s mass were within a range of 268–390 g and were filled at any pouring temperature between 1235 and 1369 °C. Lighter cups under 268 g and poured at a low temperature are not suitable for controlling inoculation potential by TA; however, they remain helpful in controlling CE. These later cups are related to cooling times of less than 180 s, which can serve as a criterion for discarding unsuitable samples. A bimodal population of cell surfaces was revealed in the samples, with the population of small cells being proportionally more numerous in samples with lower TEmin values. Full article

Steel is an important product in many engineering sectors; however, steelmaking remains one of the largest CO2 emitters. Therefore, new governmental policies drive the steelmaking industry toward a cleaner and more sustainable operation such as the gas-based direct reduction–electric arc furnace process. To become carbon neutral, utilizing more scrap is one of the feasible solutions to achieve this goal. Addressing knowledge gaps regarding scrap heterogeneity (size, shape, and composition) is essential to evaluate the effects of increased scrap ratios in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operations. This review systematically examines heat and mass transfer correlations relevant to scrap melting in BOF steelmaking, with a focus on low Prandtl number fluids (thick thermal boundary layer) and dense particulate systems. Notably, a majority of these correlations are designed for fluids with high Prandtl numbers. Even for the ones tailored for low Prandtl, they lack the introduction of the porosity effect which alters the melting behavior in such high temperature systems. The review is divided into two parts. First, it surveys heat transfer correlations for single elements (rods, spheres, and prisms) under natural and forced convection, emphasizing their role in predicting melting rates and estimating maximum shell size. Second, it introduces three numerical modeling approaches, highlighting that the computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) offers flexibility in modeling diverse scrap geometries and contact interactions while being computationally less demanding than particle-resolved direct numerical simulation (PR-DNS). Nevertheless, the review identifies a critical gap: no current CFD–DEM framework simultaneously captures shell formation (particle growth) and non-isotropic scrap melting (particle shrinkage), underscoring the need for improved multiphase models to enhance BOF operation. The growing global demand for electricity, driven by the development of electromobility, data centers, and smart technologies, necessitates innovative approaches to energy generation. Wind power, as a clean and renewable energy source, plays a pivotal role in the global transition towards low-carbon power systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of generator technologies used in wind turbine applications, ranging from conventional synchronous and asynchronous machines to advanced concepts such as low-speed direct-drive (DD) generators, axial-flux topologies, and superconducting generators utilizing low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The advantages and limitations of each design are discussed in the context of efficiency, weight, reliability, scalability, and suitability for offshore deployment. Special attention is given to HTS-based generator systems, which offer superior power density and reduced losses, along with challenges related to cryogenic cooling and materials engineering. Furthermore, the paper analyzes selected modern generator designs to provide references for enhancing the performance of grid-synchronized hybrid microgrids integrating solar PV, wind, battery energy storage, and HTS-enhanced generators. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and engineers developing next-generation wind energy technologies with improved efficiency and integration potential. Full article

Under the dual challenges of global energy crisis and climate change, the building sector, as a major carbon emitter consuming 33% of global primary energy, has seen its energy efficiency optimization become a critical pathway towards achieving carbon neutrality goals. The Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR), serving as a core parameter in building envelope design, directly influences building energy consumption, with its optimized design playing a decisive role in balancing natural daylighting, ventilation efficiency, and thermal comfort. This study focuses on the traditional One-Seal dwellings (Yikeyin) in Kunming, China, establishing a dynamic wind field-thermal environment coupled analysis framework to investigate the impact mechanism of window dimensions (WWR and aspect ratio) on indoor thermal comfort under natural wind conditions in transitional climate zones. Utilizing the Grasshopper platform integrated with Ladybug, Honeybee, and Butterfly plugins, we developed parametric models incorporating Kunming’s Energy Plus Weather meteorological data. EnergyPlus and OpenFOAM were employed, respectively, for building heat-moisture balance calculations and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations, with particular emphasis on analyzing the effects of varying WWR (0.05–0.20) on temperature-humidity, air velocity, and ventilation efficiency during typical winter and summer weeks. Key findings include, (1) in summer, the baseline scenario with WWR = 0.1 achieves a dynamic thermal-humidity balance (20.89–24.27 °C, 65.35–74.22%) through a “air-permeable but non-ventilative” strategy, though wing rooms show humidity-heat accumulation risks; increasing WWR to 0.15–0.2 enhances ventilation efficiency (2–3 times higher air changes) but causes a 4.5% humidity surge; (2) winter conditions with WWR ≥ 0.15 reduce wing room temperatures to 17.32 °C, approaching cold thresholds, while WWR = 0.05 mitigates heat loss but exacerbates humidity accumulation; (3) a symmetrical layout structurally constrains central ventilation, maintaining main halls air changes below one Air Change per Hour (ACH). The study proposes an optimized WWR range of 0.1–0.15 combined with asymmetric window opening strategies, providing quantitative guidance for validating the scientific value of vernacular architectural wisdom in low-energy design. MICP-Treated Coral Aggregate and Its Application in Marine Concrete

In marine engineering applications, substituting conventional crushed stone coarse aggregates with coral aggregates offers dual advantages: reduced terrestrial quarrying operations and minimized construction material transportation costs. However, the inherent characteristics of coral aggregates—low bulk density, high porosity, and elevated water absorption capacity—adversely influence concrete workability and mechanical performance. To address these limitations, this investigation employed microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) for aggregate modification. The experimental design systematically evaluated the impacts of substrate concentration (1 mol/L) and mineralization period (14 days) on three critical parameters, mass gain percentage, water absorption reduction, and apparent density enhancement, across distinct particle size fractions (4.75–9.5 mm, 9.5–20 mm) and density classifications. Subsequent application trials assessed the performance of MICP-treated aggregates in marine concrete formulations. Results indicated that under a substrate concentration of 1 mol/L and mineralization period of 14 days, lightweight coral aggregates and coral aggregates within the 4.75–9.5 mm size fraction exhibited favorable modification effects. Specifically, their mass gain rates reached 11.75% and 11.22%, respectively, while their water absorption rates decreased by 32.22% and 34.75%, respectively. Apparent density increased from initial values of 1764 kg/m3 and 1930 kg/m3 to 2050 kg/m3 and 2207 kg/m3. Concrete mixtures incorporating modified aggregates exhibited enhanced workability and strength improvement at all curing ages. The 28-day compressive strengths reached 62.1 MPa (11.69% increment), 46.2 MPa (6.94% increment), and 60.1 MPa (14.91% increment) for the 4.75–9.5 mm, 9.5–20 mm, and continuous grading groups, respectively, compared to untreated counterparts. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article

Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted much attention as new types of luminescent carbon nanomaterials in recent years because of their tunable fluorescence, good biocompatibility, high stability, and low cost. In this review, the classification of CDs is overviewed based on their differences in structure. Subsequently, the latest research progress of CDs in fluorescence sensing is systematically summarized and various sensing principles are elucidated in detail, including fluorescence resonance energy transfer, aggregation-induced emission, aggregation-caused quenching, electron transfer, and the inner filter effect. Finally, the challenges and future direction of CD fluorescent probes are discussed in detail. The purpose of this review is to stimulate the design of advanced CD fluorescent probes and achieve the accurate and reliable measurement of analytes in complex samples. Full article

Understanding the carbon emissions of multimodal travel—comprising walking, metro, bus, cycling, and ride-hailing—is essential for promoting sustainable urban mobility. However, most existing studies focus on single-mode travel, while underlying spatiotemporal and behavioral determinants remain insufficiently explored due to the lack of fine-grained data and interpretable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a novel integration of high-frequency, real-world mobility trajectory data with interpretable machine learning to systematically identify the key drivers of carbon emissions at the individual trip level. Firstly, multimodal travel chains are reconstructed using continuous GPS trajectory data collected in Beijing. Secondly, a model based on Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) is developed to quantify trip-level CO2 emissions. Thirdly, four interpretable machine learning models based on gradient boosting—XGBoost, GBDT, LightGBM, and CatBoost—are trained using transportation and built environment features to model the relationship between CO2 emissions and a set of explanatory variables; finally, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are used to interpret the model outputs, revealing key determinants and their non-linear interaction effects. The results show that transportation-related features account for 75.1% of the explained variance in emissions, with bus usage being the most influential single factor (contributing 22.6%). Built environment features explain the remaining 24.9%. The PDP analysis reveals that substantial emission reductions occur only when the shares of bus, metro, and cycling surpass threshold levels of approximately 40%, 40%, and 30%, respectively. Additionally, travel carbon emissions are minimized when trip origins and destinations are located within a 10 to 11 km radius of the central business district (CBD). This study advances the field by establishing a scalable, interpretable, and behaviorally grounded framework to assess carbon emissions from multimodal travel, providing actionable insights for low-carbon transport planning and policy design. Helical milling presents a promising alternative to conventional drilling for hole production, offering superior surface quality and improved production efficiency. While this technique has been extensively applied in the aerospace industry, its potential for machining common engineering materials, such as AISI 1045 steel, remains underexplored in the literature. This study addresses this gap by systematically evaluating the influence of key process parameters—cutting speed (Vc), axial depth of cut (ap), and tool diameter (Dt)—on hole quality attributes, including surface roughness, burr formation, and nominal diameter accuracy. A full factorial experimental design (23) was employed, coupled with analysis of variance (ANOVA), to quantify the effects and interactions of these parameters. The results reveal that, with a higher Vc, it is possible to reduce surface roughness (Ra) by 30% to 40%, while an increased ap leads to a 50% increase in Ra. Additionally, Dt emerged as the most critical factor for nominal diameter accuracy, reducing geometrical errors by 1% with a larger Dt. Burr formation was predominantly observed at the lower end of the hole, highlighting challenges specific to this technique. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing helical milling for low-carbon steels, offering a foundation for broader industrial adoption and further research. Full article

This study investigates the synergistic modification of cement–soil using waste brick powder (WBP) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers to address the growing demand for sustainable construction materials and recycling of demolition waste. An orthogonal experimental design was employed with 5% WBP (by mass) and PVA fiber content (0–1%), evaluating mechanical properties based on unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and splitting tensile strength (STS) and microstructure via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) across 3–28 days of curing. The results demonstrate that 0.75% PVA optimizes performance, enhancing UCS by 28.3% (6.87 MPa) and STS by 34.6% (0.93 MPa) at 28 days compared to unmodified cement–soil. SEM analysis revealed that PVA fibers bridged microcracks, suppressing propagation, while WBP triggered pozzolanic reactions to densify the matrix. This dual mechanism concurrently improves mechanical durability and valorizes construction waste, offering a pathway to reduce reliance on virgin materials. This study establishes empirically validated mix ratios for eco-efficient cement–soil composites, advancing scalable solutions for low-carbon geotechnical applications. By aligning material innovation with circular economy principles, this work directly supports global de-carbonization targets in the construction sector. Full article

Hydrogen energy is a pivotal carrier for achieving carbon neutrality, requiring green and efficient production via water electrolysis. However, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves a sluggish four-electron transfer process, resulting in high overpotentials, while the prohibitive cost and complex preparation of precious metal catalysts impede large-scale commercialization. In this study, we develop a FeCo-based bimetallic deep eutectic solvent (FeCo-DES) as a multifunctional reaction medium for engineering a three-dimensional (3D) coral-like FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF composite via a mild one-step impregnation approach (70 °C, ambient pressure). The FeCo-DES simultaneously serves as the solvent, metal source, and redox agent, driving the controlled in situ assembly of FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl hybrids on Ni(OH)2/NiOOH-coated nickel foam (NF). This hierarchical architecture induces synergistic enhancement through geometric structural effects combined with multi-component electronic interactions. Consequently, the FeOOH-Co2(OH)3Cl/NF catalyst achieves a remarkably low overpotential of 197 mV at 100 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 65.9 mV dec−1, along with 98% current retention over 24 h chronopotentiometry. This study pioneers a DES-mediated strategy for designing robust composite catalysts, establishing a scalable blueprint for high-performance and low-cost OER systems. Full article
