Effect of a Nutritional Education Intervention on Sports Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Intake, and Body Composition in Female Athletes: A Pilot Study

Background/Objectives: Studies have reported that female athletes often exhibit low levels of nutritional knowledge and inadequate dietary intake to meet their nutritional needs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a nutritional education intervention on nutrition knowledge, dietary intake, and body composition in female handball players (n = 45; age, 17.6 ± 2.1 years). Methods: A quasi-experimental intervention design was implemented, consisting of a 3-week educational program delivered through six in-person sessions led by a registered dietitian. Nutrition knowledge, dietary intake, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and anthropometric and body composition measurements were assessed. Results: Nutrition knowledge levels were significantly higher both immediately post-intervention and three months later compared to baseline (p < 0.05, ES > 0.8). A total of 36 participants completed a 3-day dietary record at baseline and at follow-up. Initial assessments revealed insufficient energy (31 kcal/kg/day) and carbohydrate intake (3.0 g/kg/day) and a high intake of total fats (1.4 g/kg/day). During follow-up, a significant decrease in the consumption of foods rich in sugar was observed (p = 0.0272). A total of 82.2% of the players needed to improve their adherence to the Mediterranean diet. No significant changes were found in Mediterranean diet adherence or body composition following the intervention. Conclusions: The nutritional education intervention significantly improved athletes’ nutritional knowledge and significantly decreased their consumption of sugary foods; however, further studies are needed to evaluate its impact on dietary intake and body composition, considering the study’s limitations. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by renal resistance to arginine vasopressin (AVP), resulting in the kidneys’ inability to concentrate urine. Approximately 90% of NDI cases follow an X-linked inheritance pattern and are associated with pathogenic variants in the AVPR2 gene, which encodes the vasopressin receptor type 2. The remaining 10% are attributed to mutations in the AQP2 gene, which encodes aquaporin-2, and may follow either autosomal dominant or recessive inheritance patterns. We present the case of a male infant, younger than nine months of age, who was clinically diagnosed with NDI at six months. The patient presented recurrent episodes of polydipsia, polyuria, dehydration, hypernatremia, and persistently low urine osmolality. Despite adjustments in pharmacologic treatment and strict monitoring of urinary output, the clinical response remained suboptimal. Given the lack of improvement and the radiological finding of an absent posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis), the possibility of coexistent central diabetes insipidus (CDI) was raised, prompting a therapeutic trial with desmopressin. Nevertheless, in the absence of clinical improvement, desmopressin was discontinued. The patient’s management was continued with hydrochlorothiazide, ibuprofen, and a high-calorie diet restricted in sodium and protein, resulting in progressive clinical stabilization. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous missense variant in the AQP2 gene (c.398T > A; p.Val133Glu), classified as likely pathogenic according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) criteria: PM2 (absent from population databases), PP2 (missense variant in a gene with a low rate of benign missense variation), and PP3 (multiple lines of computational evidence supporting a deleterious effect)]. NDI is typically diagnosed during early infancy due to the early onset of symptoms and the potential for severe complications if left untreated. In this case, although initial clinical suspicion included concomitant CDI, the timely initiation of supportive management and the subsequent incorporation of molecular diagnostics facilitated a definitive diagnosis. The identification of a previously unreported homozygous variant in AQP2 contributed to diagnostic confirmation and therapeutic decision-making. The diagnosis and comprehensive management of NDI within the context of polyuria-polydipsia syndrome necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, integrating clinical evaluation with advanced molecular diagnostics. The novel AQP2 c.398T > A (p.Val133Glu) variant described herein was associated with early and severe clinical manifestations, underscoring the importance of genetic testing in atypical or treatment-refractory presentations of diabetes insipidus. Background/Objectives: Understanding the impact of dietary habits in terms of obesity, health outcomes, and functional decline is critical in Europe’s growing elderly population. This study analyzed trends in Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence, obesity prevalence, and grip strength among middle-aged and elderly Europeans using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Methods: Data from four SHARE waves (2015–2022) across 28 countries were analyzed. Dietary patterns were assessed through food frequency questionnaires classifying participants as MD-adherent or non-adherent where adherent implies daily consumption of fruits and vegetables and occasional (3–6 times/week) intake of eggs, beans, legumes, meat, fish, or poultry (an unvalidated definition of the MD pattern). Handgrip strength, a biomarker of functional capacity, was categorized into low, medium, and high groups. Body mass index (BMI), self-perceived health (SPHUS), chronic disease prevalence, and CASP-12 scores (control, autonomy, self-realization, and pleasure evaluated on the 12-item version) were also evaluated. Statistical analyses included descriptive methods, logistic regressions, and multiple imputations to address missing data. Results: A significant majority (74–77%) consumed fruits and vegetables daily, which is consistent with MD principles; however, the high daily intake of dairy products (>50%) indicates limited adherence to the MD, which advocates for moderate consumption of dairy products. Logistic regression indicated that individuals with two or more chronic diseases were more likely to follow the MD (odds ratio [OR] = 1.21, confidence interval [CI] = 1.11–1.32), as were those individuals who rated their SPHUS as very good/excellent ([OR] = 1.42, [CI] = 1.20–1.69). Medium and high maximal handgrip were also strongly and consistently associated with higher odds of MD adherence (Medium: [OR] = 1.44, [CI] = 1.18–1.74; High: [OR] = 1.27, [CI] = 1.10–1.48). Conclusions: The findings suggest that middle-aged and older adults are more likely to adhere to the MD dietary pattern if they have more than two chronic diseases, are physically active, and have a medium or high handgrip. Although an unvalidated definition of the MD dietary pattern was used, the results highlight the importance of implementing targeted dietary strategies for middle-aged and elderly adults. Background/Objectives: Accurate dietary assessment is crucial for nutritional epidemiology, but tools like 24 h recalls (24HRs) face challenges with missing or implausible data. The Automated Self-Administered 24 h Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24) facilitates large-scale data collection, but its lack of interviewer input may lead to implausible dietary recalls (IDRs), affecting data integrity. Multiple imputation (MI) is commonly used to handle missing data, but its effectiveness in high-variability dietary data is uncertain. This study aims to assess MI’s accuracy in estimating nutrient intake under varying levels of missing data. Methods: Data from 24HRs completed by 743 adolescents (ages 13–18) in Ontario, Canada, were used. Implausible recalls were excluded based on nutrient thresholds, creating a cleaned reference dataset. Missing data were simulated at 10%, 20%, and 40% deletion rates. MI via chained equations was applied, incorporating demographic and psychosocial variables as predictors. Imputed values were compared to actual values using Spearman’s correlation and accuracy within ±10% of true values. Results: Spearman’s rho values between the imputed and actual nutrient intakes were weak (mean ρ ≈ 0.24). Accuracy within ±10% was low for most nutrients (typically < 25%), with no clear trend by missingness level. Diet quality scores showed slightly higher accuracy, but values were still under 30%. Conclusions: MI performed poorly in estimating individual nutrient intake in this adolescent sample. While MI may preserve sample characteristics, it is unreliable for accurate nutrient estimates and should be used cautiously. Future studies should focus on improving data quality and exploring better imputation methods. Full article

Purpose: To review parental pre-pregnancy and pregnancy exposures in relation to pediatric cancer (diagnosis before age 20). Methods: We conducted literature searches using Ovid Medline and Scopus to find primary research studies, review articles, and meta-analyses published from 2014 to 17 March 2021. Results: Strong evidence links increased risk of childhood cancer with maternal diabetes, age, and alcohol and coffee consumption during pregnancy. Both paternal and maternal cigarette smoking before and during pregnancy are associated with childhood cancers. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure in utero has long been known to be causally associated with increased risk of vaginal/cervical cancers in adolescent girls. More recent evidence implicates in utero DES exposure to testicular cancer in young men and possible intergenerational effects on ovarian cancer in the granddaughters of women exposed to DES during pregnancy. There is strong evidence that childhood cancer risk is also associated with both high and very low birth weight and with gestational age. Evidence is also strong for the protective effects of maternal vitamin consumption and a healthy diet during pregnancy. Unlike early studies, those reviewed here show no association between in utero exposure to medical ionizing radiation, which may be explained by reductions over time in radiation doses, avoidance of radiation during pregnancy, and/or by inadequate statistical power to detect small increases in risk, rather than a lack of causal association. Evidence is mixed or conflicting for an association between childhood cancer and maternal obesity, birth order, cesarean/instrumental delivery, and prenatal exposure to diagnostic medical radiation. Evidence is weak or absent for associations between childhood cancer and multiple gestations or assisted reproductive therapies, as well as prenatal exposure to hormones other than DES, and medications. Background: Western dietary patterns worldwide are increasingly dominated by energy-dense, nutrient-deficient industrial foods, often identified as ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Such products may have detrimental health implications, particularly if nutritionally inadequate. This study aimed to examine the intake of unhealthy UPFs among children and adolescents from five Mediterranean countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Egypt, and Lebanon) involved in the DELICIOUS project and to assess the association with dietary quality indicators. Methods: A survey was conducted with a sample of 2011 parents of children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years to evaluate their dietary habits. Diet quality was assessed using the Youth Healthy Eating Index (Y-HEI), the KIDMED index to determine adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and compliance with national dietary guidelines. Results: Increased UPF consumption was not inherently associated with healthy or unhealthy specific food groups, although children and adolescents who consumed UPF daily were less likely to exhibit high overall diet quality and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. In all five countries, greater UPF intake was associated with poorer compliance with dietary recommendations concerning fats, sweets, meat, and legumes. Conclusions: Increased UPF consumption among Mediterranean children and adolescents is associated with an unhealthy dietary pattern, possibly marked by a high intake of fats, sweets, and meat, and a low consumption of legumes. Background/Objectives: Traditional dietary screeners face significant limitations: they rely on subjective self-reporting, average intake estimates, and are influenced by a participant’s awareness of being observed—each of which can distort results. These factors reduce both accuracy and reproducibility. The Guide Against Age-Related Disease (GARD) addresses these issues by applying Assembly Theory to objectively quantify food and food behavior (FFB) complexity. This study aims to validate the GARD as a structured, bias-resistant tool for dietary assessment in clinical and research settings. Methods: The GARD survey was administered in an internal medicine clinic within a suburban hospital system in the southeastern U.S. The tool assessed six daily eating windows, scoring high-complexity FFBs (e.g., fresh plants, social eating, fasting) as +1 and low-complexity FFBs (e.g., ultra-processed foods, refined ingredients, distracted eating) as –1. To minimize bias, patients were unaware of scoring criteria and reported only what they ate the previous day, avoiding broad averages. A computer algorithm then scored responses based on complexity, independent of dietary guidelines. Internal (face, convergent, and discriminant) validity was assessed using Spearman rho correlations. Results: Face validation showed high inter-rater agreement using predefined Assembly Index (Ai) and Copy Number (Ni) thresholds. Positive correlations were found between high-complexity diets and behaviors (rho = 0.533–0.565, p < 0.001), while opposing constructs showed moderate negative correlations (rho = –0.363 to −0.425, p < 0.05). GARD scores aligned with established diet patterns: Mediterranean diets averaged +22; Standard American Diet averaged −10. Full article

Background/Objectives: Recent studies linked a diet rich in ultra-processed foods (UPFs) with depression and diabetes. Although common risk factors, such as aging, are defined for both diseases, how UPFs are associated with the bidirectional relationship between them is not known. This study aimed to investigate whether UPF intake modifies the association between depression and diabetes within the Brazilian adult population. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis utilized data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey, involving over 87,000 adults (aged 18–92 years). Participants provided self-reported data on diabetes and depression diagnoses, dietary habits (assessed by qualitative FFQ), as well as demographic, and socioeconomic variables. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations, employing two classification methods—UPF1 and UPF2—based on different thresholds of weekly consumption, for high/low UPF intake. Analyses were stratified by age groups to identify variations in associations. Results: There was a significant association between depression and diabetes, especially among participants with high UPF consumption. Models adjusted by demographic characteristics, as well as meat and vegetable consumptions, demonstrated elevated odds ratios (ORs) for diabetes among individuals with depression consuming high levels of UPF, compared to those with a low UPF intake (OR: 1.258; 95% CI: 1.064–1.489 for UPF1 and OR: 1.251; 95% CI: 1.059–1.478 for UPF2). Stratified analysis by age further amplified these findings, with younger individuals showing notably stronger associations (non-old adult group OR: 1.596; 95% CI: 1.127–2.260 for UPF1, and OR: 6.726; 95% CI: 2.625–17.233 for UPF2). Conclusions: These findings suggest that high UPF intake may influence the relationship between depression and diabetes, especially in younger adults. Future longitudinal studies are warranted to establish causality, investigate underlying biological mechanisms, and examine whether improving overall nutrient intake through dietary interventions can reduce the co-occurrence of depression and diabetes. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining the host’s metabolism and can influence the host’s productivity. Both dietary composition and gender have distinct effects on the composition of the gut microbiota. Therefore, to investigate the differences in the structure and function of the gut microbiota between female and male goats, we analyzed their fecal microbiota and metabolites when fed a 10% crude protein diet at four different energy levels—7.01, 8.33, 9.66, and 10.98 MJ/kg DM. Four non-pregnant female and four male Leizhou goats (all 8 months of age) were used in the experiment, with an average body weight of 10.3 ± 0.8 kg for females and 13.6 ± 1.1 kg for males (mean ± SD). The animals were assigned to two separate 4 × 4 Latin square designs according to their gender, each consisting of four treatments and four 28-day periods, including 25 days of a dietary adaptation period and 3 days of fecal sample collection per period. The data were analyzed using the SAS statistical package and Pearson’s correlation analysis. The dominant phyla for all samples were Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, regardless of dietary energy levels or gender. Among fecal bacteria, unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae was the dominant genus in the female goats, and Oscillospiraceae_UCG-005 was the dominant genus in the male goats. The relative abundance of unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae (p < 0.001), Bacteroides (p = 0.007), norank_f_Ruminococcaceae (p = 0.024), Mediterraneibacter (p = 0.001), and norank_f_Muribaculaceae (p = 0.008) was greater in the female goats than in the male goats. In contrast, the relative abundance of Oscillospiraceae_UCG-005 (p < 0.001), Ruminococcus (p = 0.035), Monoglobus (p = 0.006), Oscillospiraceae-NK4A214_group (p = 0.008), norank_f_F082 (p < 0.001), and Prevotellaceae_UCG-003 (p < 0.001) was lower in the female goats than in the male goats. The volcano plot showed that there were 153, 171, 171, and 183 differential metabolites between the female and male goats at dietary energy levels of 7.01, 8.33, 9.66, and 10.98 MJ/kg DM, respectively. Numerous correlations were observed between differential metabolites and microflora genera. We concluded that the non-pregnant female and male goats exhibited distinct metabolic abilities when consuming a 10% crude protein diet at four different energy levels. Interestingly, in the female and male goats, the fecal microbiota also showed some differing responses to the energy levels. These results provide a gender-based reference for formulating low-protein dietary strategies for 8-month-old Leizhou goats. Full article

The Gut Mycobiome and Nutritional Status in Paediatric Phenylketonuria: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study

Background: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a metabolic disorder managed through a strict, lifelong low-phenylalanine diet, which may influence gut microbiome dynamics. While gut bacterial alterations in PKU are increasingly investigated, the fungal community (mycobiome) remains largely unexplored. This study compared gut mycobiome composition and dietary profiles of paediatric PKU patients and healthy controls, stratified by age (<10 and 10–18 years). Methods: Stool samples from 20 children (10 PKU, 10 controls) were analysed using ITS1/ITS2 amplicon sequencing. Nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index percentiles (Polish standards), and nutrient intake was evaluated from three-day dietary records compared to national reference values. Correlations between fungal taxa and dietary factors were explored. Results: Although alpha diversity did not differ significantly, beta diversity and LEfSe analyses revealed distinct fungal profiles between PKU patients and controls, indicating a trend toward group separation (PERMANOVA: F = 1.54646, p = 0.09; ANOVA: p = 0.0609). PKU patients showed increased Eurotiales (p = 0.029), Aspergillaceae (p = 0.029), and Penicillium (p = 0.11) and decreased Physalacriaceae (0% vs. 5.84% in controls) and Malassezia (p = 0.13). Spearman’s analysis showed significant correlations between Geotrichum and intake of protein (ρ = 0.55, p = 0.0127) and phenylalanine (ρ = 0.70, p = 0.0005). Conclusions: Dietary treatment in PKU is associated with age-dependent shifts in the gut mycobiome, notably increasing the abundance of taxa such as Eurotiales, Aspergillaceae, and Penicillium, involved in carbohydrate/lipid metabolism and mucosal inflammation. These findings highlight the potential of gut fungi as nutritional and clinical biomarkers in PKU. Full article

Retinal degeneration is associated with dietary factors and environmental light exposure. This study investigated the effects of a high-fructose high-fat (HFHF) diet on susceptibility to blue light (BL)-induced retinal damage. Male ICR mice were randomized into three groups: control, BL alone, and BL plus HFHF diet (BL + HFHF). The BL + HFHF group consumed the HFHF diet for 40 weeks, followed by 8 weeks of low-intensity BL exposure (465 nm, 37.7 lux, 0.8 μW/cm2) for 6 h daily. The BL group underwent the same BL exposure while kept on a standard diet. Histopathological analysis showed that, under BL exposure, the HFHF diet significantly reduced the number of photoreceptor nuclei and the thickness of the outer nuclear layer and inner/outer segments compared to the BL group (p < 0.05). While BL exposure alone caused oxidative DNA damage, rhodopsin loss, and Müller cell activation, the combination with an HFHF diet significantly amplified the oxidative DNA damage and Müller cell activation. Moreover, the HFHF diet increased blood–retinal barrier permeability and triggered apoptosis under BL exposure. Mechanistically, the BL + HFHF group exhibited increased retinal advanced glycated end product (AGE) deposition, accompanied by the activation of the receptor for AGE (RAGE), NFκB, and the NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent IL-1β pathway. In conclusion, this study underscores that unhealthy dietary factors, particularly those high in fructose and fat, may intensify the hazard of BL and adversely impact visual health. Full article

Background/Objectives: Obesity, a major risk factor for cardiometabolic traits, is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic studies have identified multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with obesity and related traits. This study aimed to examine the association between genetic risk score (GRS) and obesity-associated traits, while incorporating SNPs with established gene–diet interactions to explore their potential role in precision nutrition (PN) strategies. Methods: A total of 4279 participants were stratified into low- and intermediate-/high-GRS groups based on 18 SNPs linked to obesity and cardiometabolic traits. This study followed a case–control design, where cases included individuals with overweight/obesity, T2DM-positive (+), or CVD-positive (+) individuals and controls, which comprised individuals free of these traits. Logistic regression area under the curve (AUC) models were used to assess the predictive power of the GRS and traditional risk factors on BMI, T2DM and CVD. Results: Individuals in the intermediate-/high-GRS group had higher odds of being overweight or obese (OR = 1.23, CI: 1.03–1.48, p = 0.02), presenting as T2DM+ (OR = 1.56, CI: 1.03–2.49, p = 0.03) and exhibiting CVD-related traits (OR = 1.56, CI: 1.25–1.95, p < 0.0001), compared to the low-GRS group. The GRS was the second most predictive factor after age for BMI (AUC = 0.515; 95% CI: 0.462–0.538). The GRS also demonstrated a predictive power of 0.528 (95% CI: 0.508–0.564) for CVD and 0.548 (95% CI: 0.440–0.605) for T2DM. Conclusions: This study supports the potential utility of the GRS in assessing obesity and cardiometabolic risk, while emphasizing the potential of PN approaches in modulating genetic susceptibility. Incorporating gene–diet interactions provides actionable insights for personalized dietary strategies. Future research should integrate multiple gene–diet and gene–gene interactions to enhance risk prediction and targeted interventions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with rising incidence in younger adults. Unhealthy diets high in red and processed meat and low in fiber are key modifiable risk factors, highlighting the need for preventive nutritional strategies targeting CRC through dietary interventions. Methods: A one-day sample diet for colorectal cancer prevention, consisting of fiber-rich meals excluding red meat and incorporating whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and lean protein alternatives (such as fish and poultry), was developed. Its acceptability was assessed in a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire among healthy Romanian adults aged 18–50, with a total of 395 included participants. Results: Of the 395 respondents meeting the inclusion criteria (aged 18–50, no cancer or chronic gastrointestinal disorders), 63.5% were females, predominantly urban (90.1%), and highly educated. Mean age was 32.4 years; mean BMI was 25.07 kg/m2. The proposed colorectal cancer-preventive diet was rated as “quite attractive” and “very attractive” by 74.9% of participants. All meals received high ratings, with dinner and the first snack being most favored. Most respondents (77.2%) found the diet satisfying and the satiety level and energy adequate, and 90.4% were willing to adopt it at least a few times per week. Financial accessibility was affirmed by 77.2% of the respondents. However, 61.8% reported difficulty eliminating red meat consumption. Female participants rated the diet significantly more attractive than males did (p = 0.041). Willingness to adopt the diet strongly correlated with higher acceptability (p < 0.0001), while BMI and education level showed no significant effect. Conclusions: The proposed colorectal cancer-preventive diet was well accepted by Romanian adults aged 18–50, with higher receptivity among women and those with higher education; willingness to adopt the diet at least a few days per week was high, especially among those psychologically ready for dietary change, while key barriers included red meat reduction and perceived cost, underscoring the need for gender-sensitive, culturally adapted interventions and further research on long-term adherence and clinical impact. Background: Prematurely born newborns with low birth weight constitute a group of patients who require special care from the first days of life. Prematurity and low birth weight affect about 13.4 million infants. Risk factors include placental disorders but also factors related to the mother, such as smoking, alcohol drinking, drug use, malnutrition, or certain diseases. It is imperative to educate women of reproductive age (15–49) about the basic factors influencing embryonic development, such as oral health, diet, medicine intake, and harmful habits. Even though most women are aware of the negative impact of harmful habits on the fetus, still too little attention is paid to oral health in pregnant women. Poor oral health may influence the well-being of the future mother, as well as of the child. Therefore, women of reproductive age and those who are pregnant must have adequate knowledge on this subject. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of Polish women of reproductive age (15–49) regarding oral health during pregnancy, including the impact of dental treatment, oral hygiene, and maternal oral conditions on pregnancy outcomes and the health of the newborn. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 508 women, in the reproductive age, whose age ranged from 18 to 49 years old. The surveys were conducted from April 2020 to November 2020. The questionnaire was originally developed based on the available literature and consisted of seven sections: basic information, general health and habits, pregnancy status and dental care, knowledge of treatment options during pregnancy, oral health status and its association with the risk of preterm birth, prematurity and the child’s oral health, and breastfeeding and oral development. Results: After excluding incomplete questionnaires, a total of 499 questionnaires were included in the analysis. Women participating in the study had a fairly good understanding of the impact of oral health on the fetus and the role of breastfeeding in the development of the stomatognathic system (from 50% to 70% correct answers). However, even though most respondents had completed higher education (344/68.94%), their knowledge of oral health, preterm birth, and low birth weight was very limited (including the impact of inflammation on the intrauterine development of the child or bacteria and transfer across the placenta). In these sections, the percentage of correct answers ranged from less than 20% to 50%. When analyzing knowledge by age, education, number of births, and place of residence, the highest levels of knowledge were observed among respondents with higher education, particularly those aged 27–32. Conclusions: Respondents had a fairly good understanding of the general impact of oral health during pregnancy and recognition of the importance of breastfeeding for infants. However, their knowledge about the impact of bacteria and inflammation in the mother’s oral cavity on prematurity and low birth weight was limited. Therefore, educating women of reproductive age and pregnant women on this topic is essential, as it may help reduce the adverse consequences of prematurity. Full article

Background: Childhood obesity is a significant public health issue linked to poor diet, low physical activity, and limited access to supportive environments. Green schoolyards may promote physical activity and improve health outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of the Green Healthy Primary School of the Future (GHPSF) intervention—greening schoolyards—on children’s BMI z-scores, waist circumference, and hip circumference over 18 months, and compared these effects to those observed in the earlier Healthy Primary School of the Future (HPSF) initiative. Methods: This longitudinal quasi-experimental study included two intervention and two control schools in Limburg, a province both in the Netherlands and Belgium. Children aged 8–12 years (n = 159) were assessed at baseline, 12 months, and 18 months for anthropometric outcomes. Linear mixed models were used to estimate intervention effects over time, adjusting for sex, age, country, and socioeconomic background. Standardized effect sizes (ESs) were calculated. Results: The intervention group showed a greater reduction in BMI z-scores at 12 months (ES = −0.15, p = 0.084), though this was not statistically significant. Waist circumference increased in both groups, but less so in the intervention group, at 12 months (ES = −0.23, p = 0.057) and 18 months (ES = −0.13, p = 0.235). Hip circumference and waist–hip ratio changes were minimal and non-significant. GHPSF effect sizes were comparable to or greater than those from the HPSF initiative. Conclusions: Though not statistically significant, trends suggest that greening schoolyards may support favorable changes in anthropometric outcomes. Further research with larger samples and longer follow-up is recommended. Full article
