Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate baseline health measurements among transitional housing residents (n = 29) participating in an 8-week pilot wellness intervention. Methods: Researchers measured anthropometrics, body composition, muscular strength, cardiovascular indicators, physical activity, diet quality, and health-related perceptions. Researchers analyzed data using descriptive statistics and conventional content analysis. Results: Most participants were male, White, and food insecure. Mean BMI (31.8 ± 8.6 kg/m2), waist-to-hip ratio (1.0 ± 0.1 males, 0.9 ± 0.1 females), body fat percentage (25.8 ± 6.1% males, 40.5 ± 9.4% females), blood pressure (131.8 ± 17.9/85.2 ± 13.3 mmHg), and daily step counts exceeded recommended levels. Absolute grip strength (77.1 ± 19.4 kg males, 53.0 ± 15.7 kg females) and perceived general health were below reference standards. The Healthy Eating Index-2020 score (39.7/100) indicated low diet quality. Common barriers to healthy eating were financial constraints (29.6%) and limited cooking/storage facilities (29.6%), as well as to exercise, physical impediments (14.8%). Conclusions: Residents living in transitional housing have less favorable body composition, diet, and grip strength measures, putting them at risk for negative health outcomes. Wellness interventions aimed at promoting improved health-related outcomes while addressing common barriers to proper diet and exercise among transitional housing residents are warranted. Purpose: This study investigates the test–retest reliability of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and integrated object positioning during bimanual box lifting tasks in children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP), using the Activities of Daily Living Test and Training Device (ADL-TTD). Materials and Methods: Utilizing an explorative cross-sectional design, the study recruited 47 children with USCP. The ADL-TTD, equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for precise object positioning, measured MVC, and object position in 3D space in a cross-sectional measurement containing two measurements in a fixed time period. Results: The findings demonstrated good test–retest reliability for MVC, with an ICCagreement of 0.95 for the mean MVC value. Additionally, good reliability was observed for object positioning in different directions measured with an IMU, with ICCagreement ranging from 0.82 to 0.86 degrees. Regarding the standard error of measurement (SEM), the SEMagreement for the mean MVC value was 5.94 kg, while the SEMagreement for object positioning was 1.48, 5.39, and 3.43 degrees, respectively. Conclusions: These results indicate that the ADL-TTD demonstrates good test–retest reliability for both MVC and object positioning, making it a valuable tool for analyzing this population in cross-sectional research by providing reliable measures of task-oriented strength and object manipulation. However, the relatively high SEMagreement, particularly in MVC, suggests that caution is needed when using this tool for repeated testing over time. This pioneering approach could significantly contribute to tailored assessment and training for children with USCP, highlighting the importance of integrating task-specific strength and positional accuracy into therapeutic interventions. “More than Hunger”: Experiences of Food Insecurity Among South Asian International Graduate Students at a U.S. University

Background/Objectives: International students pursuing higher education in the United States face unique challenges that increase their risk of food insecurity, including limited financial resources, employment restrictions, and cultural barriers. While food insecurity among domestic students has been widely studied, limited research focuses on the lived experiences of international graduate students. This study explores the challenges, perceptions, and coping strategies related to food insecurity among international graduate students at a large public university in North Texas. Methods: This qualitative, ethnographic study involved 20 semi-structured interviews with international graduate students who were clients of the university’s food pantry. Participants were recruited using purposive convenience sampling. Interviews focused on students’ experiences with food access, financial constraints, campus resources, and cultural food preferences. Data were analyzed using thematic coding in MAXQDA. Two standardized food insecurity measures—the USDA and FAO scales—were also administered and analyzed using SPSS. Results: Findings revealed that 85% of participants experienced limited access to nutritious and culturally appropriate foods, with 70% reporting hunger due to financial constraints. Themes included lack of cooking skills, limited campus food options, difficulty accessing familiar groceries, and limited job opportunities. Students expressed that food insecurity significantly impacted their physical health, mental well-being, and social lives, though many continued to prioritize academics over personal nourishment. Conclusions: Food insecurity among international graduate students is multifaceted, shaped by financial, cultural, and institutional barriers. Addressing this issue requires culturally sensitive interventions, improved access to diverse food options, tailored student support services, and institutional efforts to better understand and meet the needs of international students. Background: Despite growing interest in the literature on Parkinson’s disease (PD) on cognitive functioning, financial incompetence—a crucial aspect of daily living—and its modulation susceptibility by PD treatment regimens remains relatively understudied. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize existing evidence on how PD treatments affect financial capacity, assessing both direct financial competence and cognitive or behavioral proxies of financial decision-making. Methods: A comprehensive literature search according to PRISMA protocol was conducted across major biomedical databases, supplemented by gray literature and manual reference list checks. Eligible studies assessed financial capacity directly or indirectly through cognitive proxies (e.g., executive function, decision-making) or financial risk behaviors (e.g., impulse control disorders). Two separate meta-analyses were performed. Heterogeneity (I2), publication bias (Egger’s test), and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess robustness. Results: Twenty-three studies met inclusion criteria. One study directly measured financial capacity and was analyzed narratively, reporting diminished competence in patients on levodopa therapy. A meta-analysis of cognitive proxies (10 studies) showed a moderate effect size (Hedges’ g = 0.70, 95% CI [0.45, 0.92], p < 0.001), indicating that PD treatments negatively affect executive function and financial decision-making. A second meta-analysis of impulse control and financial risk behaviors (12 studies) revealed a larger effect size (Hedges’ g = 0.98, 95% CI [0.75, 1.22], p < 0.001), strongly linking dopamine agonists to increased financial risk-taking. Moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 45.8–60.5%) and potential publication bias (Egger’s test p = 0.027) were noted. Conclusions: These findings suggest that PD treatments negatively impact financial decision-making both directly and indirectly through cognitive and behavioral pathways. Integrating financial decision-making assessments into PD care, particularly for patients on dopamine agonists, is recommended. Future research should prioritize longitudinal studies and standardized neuropsychological measures to guide clinical practice and optimize patient outcomes. Full article

Ensuring a sustainable and healthy human environment in university dormitories is essential for students’ learning, living, and overall health and well-being. To address this need, we carried out a series of systematic field measurements of the noise levels at 30 dormitories in three representative major urban universities in a major provincial capital city in China and designed and implemented a comprehensive questionnaire and surveyed 1005 students about their perceptions of their acoustic environment. We proposed and applied a sustainability–health-oriented, multidimensional assessment framework to assess the acoustic environment of the dormitories and student responses to natural sound, technological sounds, and human-made sounds. Using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach combined with the field measurements and student surveys, we identified three categories and six factors on student health and well-being for assessing the acoustic environment of university dormitories. The field data indicated that noise levels at most of the measurement points exceeded the recommended or regulatory thresholds. Higher noise impacts were observed in early mornings and evenings, primarily due to traffic noise and indoor activities. Natural sounds (e.g., wind, birdsong, water flow) were highly valued by students for their positive effect on the students’ pleasantness and satisfaction. Conversely, human and technological sounds (traffic noise, construction noise, and indoor noise from student activities) were deemed highly disturbing. Gender differences were evident in the assessment of the acoustic environment, with male students generally reporting higher levels of the pleasantness and preference for natural sounds compared to female students. Educational backgrounds showed no significant influence on sound perceptions. The findings highlight the need for providing actionable guidelines for dormitory ecological design, such as integrating vertical greening in dormitory design, water features, and biodiversity planting to introduce natural soundscapes, in parallel with developing campus activity standards and lifestyle during noise-sensitive periods. The multidimensional assessment framework will drive a sustainable human–ecology–sound symbiosis in university dormitories, and the category and factor scales to be employed and actions to improve the level of student health and well-being, thus, providing a reference for both research and practice for sustainable cities and communities. The Atlantic Diet (AD) is based on traditional dietary patterns in Galicia (northwestern Spain) and northern Portugal and is known for its health benefits. The AD focuses on fresh, local, and seasonal foods, especially fish, seafood, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fruit, olive oil, and a moderate consumption of wine. However, it has received less attention from researchers than other dietary patterns. The present study had two main objectives: (i) to evaluate the dietary habits of a Galician population in relation to the AD and (ii) to create a numerical index to measure adherence to the AD. In 2022, a validated food frequency questionnaire was administered to 500 healthy adults living in Galicia. The data on participants’ dietary habits showed notable deviations from the ideal AD, especially regarding consumption of fruits, grains, and seafood. However, an adequate intake of legumes and nuts was observed, along with a reduction in the consumption of processed foods (except among younger participants) relative to that revealed in previous surveys. To assess adherence to the diet, statistical and chemometric analyses were applied, leading to the development of a new index: the Atlantic Diet Scale (ADS). The ADS was compared with three existing tools and proved to be a simple, flexible, and effective method for assessing dietary adherence based on optimal intake levels across food groups. When applied to dietary data, the ADS yielded adherence levels similar to two of the three traditional methods, with some differences relative to the third. These findings highlight the need for standardized evaluation tools, including clear definitions of food groups and consistent scoring systems, to better assess and promote adherence to the Atlantic Diet. This paper describes a novel wearable personal uroflowmeter and its use to log urine leakage episodes in women. Consisting of a miniature flow rate sensor attached under the urethral meatus, it recorded both urine flow rate and volume during activities of daily living. The sensor communicated with a determining unit incorporating a microcontroller and an inertial measurement unit worn at the waist, facilitating the post-hoc determination of which activities and changes in pose caused leakage. Six women participated in a feasibility study performed in a clinical setting. The results indicate that the uroflowmeter was 97.5% accurate in assessing micturition flow compared to gold standard uroflowmetry and leakage measurements. The system also provides subject-specific information on the relationship between physical activity and urine leakage, thereby eliminating errors due to missing data and recall bias in bladder leakage diaries and circumventing the limitations of office-based uroflowmeters. Background/Objectives: Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used indicator of children’s nutritional status and helps identify risks of being underweight and overweight during development. Understanding how BMI classifications evolve over time is crucial for early intervention and public health planning. This study aimed to determine the scope and direction of changes in BMI classification among children between the ages of 6 and 10. Methods: This longitudinal study included 1026 children (497 boys and 529 girls) from Gdansk, Poland. Standardized anthropometric measurements were collected at ages 6 and 10. BMI was calculated and classified using international reference systems (IOTF and OLAF). BMI classification changes were analyzed using rank transformations and Pearson correlation coefficients (p < 0.05) to explore relationships between body measurements. Results: Most children (76.51%) retained their BMI classifications over the four-year period. However, 23.49% experienced changes, with boys more often moving to a higher BMI category (15.29%) and girls more frequently shifting to a lower category (14.03%). The prevalence of children classified as living with obesity declined between ages 6 and 10, while both overweight and underweight classifications slightly increased. Strong correlations were observed between somatic features and BMI at both ages. Conclusions: The stability of BMI classification over time underscores the importance of early identification and sustained monitoring of nutritional status. The sex-specific patterns observed highlight the importance of targeted health promotion strategies. In this context, incorporating dietary interventions—such as promoting balanced meals and reducing unhealthy food intake—could play a significant role in maintaining healthy BMI trajectories and preventing both obesity and undernutrition during childhood. Considerable amounts of research have discussed “No Excuses” charter schools preparing traditionally disadvantaged students for higher education. Yet, no scholarly work has identified or investigated U.S. academically intensive charter schools (AICS) that were founded to enable students to excel academically as much as their abilities and efforts allow. Here, we offer an exploratory study of AICS, defining them, describing the lived experience of an AICS principal, presenting the first national data comparing AICS campus and student characteristics to those of other charter schools, and assessing whether, nationally, AICS succeed on their own terms, with relatively high academic achievements. The data indicate that AICS resemble other charter schools in terms of measurable campus and student characteristics. Standardized, NAEP-adjusted Z-scores reveal that AICS consistently outperform other charter and district schools in literacy and mathematics across demographic groups, with differences expanding after the COVID-19 pandemic. We end with limitations and suggestions for future research. Full article

Westernization of traditional diets has been implicated in the rising burden of overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes, especially in developing countries. In recent times, diet therapy is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of diabetes care. This study assessed the effect of diet therapy on body composition, antioxidant nutrient intake, and glycemic status in individuals living with type 2 diabetes (ILWT2D). In this prospective observational cohort study, 45 ILWT2D who were receiving diet therapy (personalized dietary counseling) in addition to standard medical treatment (intervention group) were compared with 45 ILWT2D receiving only standard medical treatment (comparator group). Antioxidant micronutrient intake was assessed using a 24-h dietary recall. Body composition indices, including body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (%BF), and visceral fat (VF), were assessed. Participants’ fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) levels, and blood pressure (BP) were measured. All measurements were performed before and after a three-month period. There were significant improvements in BMI (27.8 ± 6.0 kg/m2 vs. 26.9 ± 5.5 kg/m2, p = 0.003), %BF (37.8 ± 11.9% vs. 35.5 ± 10.5%, p < 0.001), visceral fat (9.8 ± 3.4 vs. 9.1 ± 3.2, p < 0.001), systolic BP (136.9 ± 19.9 mmHg vs. 124.6 ± 13.0 mmHg, p < 0.001), FBG (8.8 ± 2.8 mmol/L vs. 6.7 ± 1.5 mmol/L, p < 0.001), and HbA1c (7.3 ± 1.0% vs. 6.4 ± 0.8%, p < 0.001) in the intervention group from baseline to endline, but not in the comparator group. In contrast, %BF increased within the comparator group (39.9 ± 7.8 vs. 40.7 ± 7.4; p = 0.029). Vitamin A intake increased significantly (227.5 ± 184.3 µg vs. 318.8 ± 274.7 µg, p = 0.038) within the intervention group but not in the comparator group (174.9 ± 154.3 µg, 193.7 ± 101.4 µg, p = 0.54). There were no significant changes in zinc, copper, selenium, and vitamin C intakes (p > 0.05) in the intervention group from the baseline to endline, unlike those in the comparator group who showed a significant increase in the intake of these nutrients. There was a significant increase in vitamin A intake among the ILWT2D who received dietary counseling as an intervention compared to those who did not. Additionally, the ILWT2D who received dietary counseling had significant improvements in their body composition (BMI, body fat, and visceral fat) and systolic blood pressure, compared to those who did not. The ILWT2D who received the intervention had significantly better glycemic control (FBG and HbA1c) than their counterparts who did not. Thus, this study suggests the potential of diet therapy as a viable non-pharmacological treatment approach for individuals living with type 2 diabetes. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the fluoride content and other key physicochemical properties in commercially available black tea infusions, with a focus on tea form and geographic origin, in order to assess their contribution to total dietary fluoride intake. Methods: A total of 121 black tea samples were analyzed, including 66 loose-leaf, 42 bags, and 13 pyramid-bag teas. Infusions were prepared using standardized brewing protocols. Fluoride concentrations were determined with an ion-selective electrode, while the pH, buffer capacity, titratable acidity, calcium, and inorganic phosphorus were also measured. Statistical analysis included ANOVA, Tukey post hoc tests, and Pearson correlation analysis. Results: Fluoride content varied significantly by tea form and origin. Infusion of tea bags exhibited the highest fluoride, calcium, and acidity levels, while loose-leaf teas had the lowest. Teas from Africa contained approximately twice as much fluoride as those from Central or East Asia. Significant correlations between fluoride, calcium, and phosphorus were observed, particularly in tea-bag infusions, suggesting processing influences mineral release. Conclusions: Black tea, particularly in bag form and sourced from African regions, may significantly contribute to daily fluoride intake. Given the potential to exceed recommended fluoride thresholds, especially in individuals consuming multiple cups daily or living in fluoridated areas, these findings underscore the importance of consumer awareness and possible product labeling to guide safe consumption. Objectives: To evaluate the reproducibility of measurements of breech progression angle (BPA) by transperineal ultrasound (US) before and after its standardization by applying an image-based checklist. Methods: Eighteen 3-dimensional (3D) volumes of transperineal US from women at 36–40 weeks of gestation with a singleton fetus in breech presentation were provided to eight operators from four maternity units in Spain and Italy. All operators measured the BPA using 3D US volume processing software, and interobserver reproducibility was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Following an online live review of all measurements by the operators, and the identification of sources of disagreement, an image-based scoring system for BPA measurement was collaboratively developed. The checklist included the following: (1) acquisition in the midsagittal plane, avoiding the posterior shadow of the pubic ramus; (2) visualization of the complete “almond-shaped” pubic symphysis; (3) drawing a first line along the longitudinal axis of the symphysis, dividing it equally; (4) extending this line to the inferior edge of the bone; and (5) drawing a second line tangentially from the lower edge of the symphysis to the lowest recognizable fetal part. The BPA measurements were then repeated using this checklist, and reproducibility was reassessed. Results: Eighteen volumes were analyzed by the eight operators, achieving a moderate reproducibility (ICC: 0.70, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.48 to 0.86). A score was developed to include a series of landmarks for the appropriate assessment of BPA. Subsequently, the same eighteen volumes were reassessed using the new score, resulting in improved reproducibility (ICC: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.66 to 0.92). Conclusions: The measurement of BPA is feasible and reproducible when using a standardized image-based score. Full article

Enabling gender equality through the empowerment of women to fully participate in modern society is one of the most critical steps toward sustainable development. However, recent UN reports indicate that the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have jeopardized the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 5 by 2030 in many countries worldwide, including Iceland, which has consistently been ranked as a global leader in gender equality. The main objective of this qualitative study is to examine the gendered impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic by exploring women’s lived experiences during the crisis and its aftermath across the primary domains of gender equality—personal and social. The study is based on 72 in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted in the Northeastern Region of Iceland (Norðurland eystra) in 2022–2023, utilizing both strength-based and deficit analyses. The findings from the study indicate that, despite high government gender equality standards and support programs, as well as the considerable resilience demonstrated by women during the pandemic crisis, women in Iceland continue to encounter significant constraints to empowerment in achieving genuine gender equality within the personal and social domains. The study outcomes suggest that the further integration of a gender-responsive approach into policy development is crucial for the implementation of more comprehensive, nuanced, and locally adaptive gender equality measures. Advancing such policies will not only strengthen Iceland’s position as a global leader in gender equality but also contribute to its long-term social sustainability. Full article

As an emerging e-commerce model, live streaming e-commerce integrates instant interaction, content marketing, and online sales to bring consumers a new shopping experience. However, there are many risks in the process of live e-commerce transactions. Identifying key risk factors and implementing targeted control measures are crucial for promoting the sustainable and healthy development of live streaming e-commerce. This paper firstly constructs a business model of live streaming e-commerce transactions according to the transaction scenario and summarizes 24 risk factors from the three dimensions of live streaming e-commerce platforms, merchants, and anchors based on relevant national standards and other relevant literature. Secondly, the Delphi method is employed to modify and optimize the initial risk factors. On this basis, the social network model of risk factors is constructed to determine the influence relationship among risk factors. By calculating the degree centrality, factor types are segmented, and key risk factors as well as influence paths are identified. Finally, corresponding countermeasures and suggestions are proposed. The results indicate that Credit Evaluation System Perfection, Service Evaluation System Perfection, Qualification Audit Mechanism Perfection, Dispute Complaint Handling Channels Perfection, Risk Identification Mechanism Perfection, Platform Qualification, Merchant Qualification, and Merchant Credit are the critical risk factors affecting live streaming e-commerce transactions. In teacher education research, the primary source of data used to measure teachers’ reflective skills are written reflection products, which are often collected in the context of field experiences following specific structural guidelines (e.g., portfolio texts). However, it is unclear how appropriate written products are for this purpose, considering teachers’ everyday professional lives, in which reflection is a mostly verbal, highly self-directed process depending on the teachers’ level of expertise. Therefore, in our study, we analyzed how teachers’ free, unstructured reflections differ from reflections structured by model-based reflection prompts. In an exploratory qualitative research design with theoretical sampling, a total of 22 prospective teachers at four different levels of expertise were asked to reflect on two standardized fictitious vignettes using a think-aloud approach. For the first vignette, participants reflected in an unstructured way. For the second vignette, the reflection was structured using simple model-based reflection prompts. On average, the participants showed a significantly better reflective performance in the structured condition, but no significant differences in relation to the level of expertise were observed. The results contribute to a better understanding of the validity of typical reflections used in teacher education as an indicator of reflective practice in the professional field. Full article
