Catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis oils is an important step for producing replacement hydrocarbon-rich liquid biofuels from biomass and can help to advance pyrolysis technology. Catalysts play a pivotal role in influencing the selectivity of chemical reactions leading to the formation of main compounds in the final upgraded liquid products. The present work involved a systematic study of solvent-free catalytic reactions of cyclohexanone in the presence of hydrogen gas at 160 °C for 3 h in a batch reactor. Cyclohexanone can be produced from biomass through the selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived phenolics. Three types of catalysts comprising undoped NbOPO4, 10 wt% NiO/NbOPO4, and 30 wt% NiO/NbOPO4 were studied. Undoped NbOPO4 promoted both aldol condensation and the dehydration of cyclohexanol, producing fused ring aromatic hydrocarbons and hard char. With 30 wt% NiO/NbOPO4, extensive competitive hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol was observed, along with the formation of C6 cyclic hydrocarbons. When compared to NbOPO4 and 30 wt% NiO/NbOPO4, the use of 10 wt% NiO/NbOPO4 produced superior selectivity towards bi-cycloalkanones (i.e., C12) at cyclohexanone conversion of 66.8 ± 1.82%. Overall, the 10 wt% NiO/NbOPO4 catalyst exhibited the best performance towards the production of precursor compounds that can be further hydrodeoxygenated into energy-dense aviation fuel hydrocarbons. Hence, the presence and loading of NiO was able to tune the activity and selectivity of NbOPO4, thereby influencing the final products obtained from the same cyclohexanone feedstock. This study underscores the potential of lignin-derived pyrolysis oils as important renewable feedstocks for producing replacement hydrocarbon solvents or feedstocks and high-density sustainable liquid hydrocarbon fuels via sequential and selective catalytic upgrading. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have shown great potential in the field of soft robotics due to their unique actuation capabilities. Despite the growing number of experimental studies in the soft robotics field, theoretical research remains limited. In this paper, a dynamic model of a bionic arm using an LCE fiber as artificial muscle is established, which exhibits periodic oscillation controlled by periodic illumination. Based on the assumption of linear damping and angular momentum theorem, the dynamics equation of the model oscillation is derived. Then, based on the assumption of linear elasticity model, the periodic spring force of the fiber is given. Subsequently, the evolution equations for the cis number fraction within the fiber are developed, and consequently, the analytical solution for the light-excited strain is derived. Following that, the dynamics equation is numerically solved, and the mechanism of the controllable oscillation is elucidated. Numerical calculations show that the stable oscillation period of the bionic arm depends on the illumination period. When the illumination period aligns with the natural period of the bionic arm, the resonance is formed and the amplitude is the largest. Additionally, the effects of various parameters on forced oscillation are analyzed. The results of numerical studies on the bionic arm can provide theoretical support for the design of micro-machines, bionic devices, soft robots, biomedical devices, and energy harvesters. The geometric design of flow channels in bipolar plates is one of the critical features of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), as it determines the power output of the fuel cell and has a significant impact on its performance and durability. The function of the bipolar plate is to guide the transfer of reactant gases to the gas diffusion layer and catalytic layer inside the PEMFC, while removing unreacted gases and gas–liquid byproducts. Therefore, the design of the bipolar plate flow channel is directly related to the water and thermal management of the PEMFC. In order to improve the comprehensive performance of PEMFCs and ensure their safe and stable operation, it is necessary to design the flow channels in bipolar plates rationally and effectively. This study addresses the limitations of existing bipolar plate flow channels by proposing a new coupling of serpentine and radial channels. The distribution of oxygen, water concentrations, and temperature inside the channel is simulated using the multi-physics simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0. The performance of this novel design is compared with conventional flow channels, with a particular focus on the pressure drop and current density to evaluate changes in the output performance of the PEMFC. The results show that the maximum current density of this novel design is increased by 67.36% and 10.43% compared to straight channel and single serpentine channels, respectively. The main contribution of this research is the innovative design of a new coupling of serpentine and radial channels in bipolar plates, which improves the overall performance of the PEMFC. This study provides theoretical support for the design of bipolar plate flow channels in PEMFCs and holds significant importance for the green development of energy. Full article

This review surveys recent advances and emerging prospects in phase-transfer catalysis (PTC) for fuel desulfurization. In response to increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the removal of sulfur from transportation fuels has become imperative for curbing SOx emissions. Conventional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) operates under severe temperature–pressure conditions and displays limited efficacy toward sterically hindered thiophenic compounds, motivating the exploration of non-hydrogen routes such as oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Within ODS, PTC offers distinctive benefits by shuttling reactants across immiscible phases, thereby enhancing reaction rates and selectivity. In particular, PTC enables efficient migration of organosulfur substrates from the hydrocarbon matrix into an aqueous phase where they are oxidized and subsequently extracted. The review first summarizes the deployment of classic PTC systems—quaternary ammonium salts, crown ethers, and related agents—in ODS operations and then delineates the underlying phase-transfer mechanisms, encompassing reaction-controlled, thermally triggered, photo-responsive, and pH-sensitive cycles. Attention is next directed to a new generation of catalysts, including quaternary-ammonium polyoxometalates, imidazolium-substituted polyoxometalates, and ionic-liquid-based hybrids. Their tailored architectures, catalytic performance, and mechanistic attributes are analyzed comprehensively. By incorporating multifunctional supports or rational structural modifications, these systems deliver superior desulfurization efficiency, product selectivity, and recyclability. Despite such progress, commercial deployment is hindered by the following outstanding issues: long-term catalyst durability, continuous-flow reactor design, and full life-cycle cost optimization. Future research should, therefore, focus on elucidating structure–performance relationships, translating batch protocols into robust continuous processes, and performing rigorous environmental and techno-economic assessments to accelerate the industrial adoption of PTC-enabled desulfurization. Experimental research was conducted to characterize the ignition delay time and combustion performance of non-toxic reactants as a possible replacement for highly toxic fuels, such as hydrazine. The liquid fuel and oxidizer were N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) and white fuming nitric acid (WFNA), respectively. The hypergolic ignition delay of the reactants was determined using 100% TMEDA with either >90% or >99.5% WFNA that was distilled, titrated, and droplet-tested in a laboratory setting while controlling the parameters that affect the quality of the yielded product. It was observed that >90% WFNA had three times longer average ignition delay than >99.5% WFNA with both mixtures producing ignition delay times less than 20 ms. Based upon the demonstrated hypergolic droplet test results, a fluid delivery feed system and hypergolic heavyweight bipropellant rocket engine were designed and fabricated to characterize the combustion efficiency of these non-toxic reactants. The rocket injector and characteristic length differed while operating under similar flow conditions to evaluate combustion efficiency. Results demonstrated similar engine performance between both cases of WFNA with improvements of over 30% in combustion efficiency with increased characteristic length. Vegetable oils are an important alternative to the massive use of fuels and lubricants from non-renewable energy sources. In this study, the physicochemical properties of coconut oil and waste cooking oil are investigated for biofuels and biolubricant applications. A transesterification of both oils was reached, and the transesterified oils were characterized by infrared analysis and gas chromatography. The lubricant performances of these oils have been evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under an ambient atmosphere. Different formulations were developed using graphite particles as solid additive. Each initial and modified oil has been investigated as a base oil and as a liquid additive lubricant. The best friction reduction findings have been obtained for both initial oils as liquid additives, highlighting the key role of triglycerides in influencing tribological performances. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable energy has spurred the exploration of advanced technologies for biodiesel production. This paper investigates the use of Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD)-generated low-temperature plasmas to enhance the conversion of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) into hydrogenated fatty acid methyl esters (H-FAMEs) and other high-value hydrocarbons. A key mechanistic advance is achieved via in situ distillation: at the reactor temperature, unsaturated C18 and C20 FAMEs remain liquid due to their low melting points, while the corresponding saturated C18:0 and C20:0 FAMEs (with melting points of approximately 37–39 °C and 46–47 °C, respectively) solidify and deposit on a glass substrate. This phase separation continuously exposes fresh unsaturated FAME to the plasma, driving further hydrogenation and thereby delivering high overall conversion efficiency. The non-thermal, energy-efficient nature of DBD plasmas offers a promising alternative to conventional high-pressure, high-temperature methods; here, we evaluate the process efficiency, product selectivity, and scalability of this room-temperature, atmospheric-pressure approach and discuss its potential for sustainable fuel-reforming applications. Driven by stringent emission regulations, advanced combustion modes utilizing turbulent jet ignition technology are pivotal for enhancing the performance of marine low-speed natural gas dual-fuel engines. This review focuses on three novel combustion modes, yielding key conclusions: (1) Compared to the conventional DJCDC mode, the TJCDC mode exhibits a significantly higher swirl ratio and turbulence kinetic energy in the main chamber during initial combustion. This promotes natural gas jet development and combustion acceleration, leading to shorter ignition delay, reduced combustion duration, and a combustion center (CA50) positioned closer to the Top Dead Center (TDC), alongside higher peak cylinder pressure and a faster early heat release rate. Energetically, while TJCDC incurs higher heat transfer losses, it benefits from lower exhaust energy and irreversible exergy loss, indicating greater potential for useful work extraction, albeit with slightly higher indicated specific NOx emissions. (2) In the high-compression ratio TJCPC mode, the Liquid Pressurized Natural Gas (LPNG) injection parameters critically impact performance. Delaying the start of injection (SOI) or extending the injection duration degrades premixing uniformity and increases unburned methane (CH4) slip, with the duration effects showing a load dependency. Optimizing both the injection timing and duration is, therefore, essential for emission control. (3) Increasing the excess air ratio delays the combustion phasing in TJCPC (longer ignition delay, extended combustion duration, and retarded CA50). However, this shift positions the heat release more optimally relative to the TDC, resulting in significantly improved indicated thermal efficiency. This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing high-efficiency, low-emission combustion strategies in marine dual-fuel engines. Full article

The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers an energy-saving and environmentally friendly approach to producing hydrocarbon fuels. The use of a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) flow cell has generally improved the rate of CO2RR, while the gas diffusion layer (GDL) remains a significant challenge. In this study, we successfully engineered a novel metal–organic framework (MOF) heterojunction through the controlled coating of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) on ultrathin nickel—metal–organic framework (Ni-MOF) nanosheets. This innovative architecture simultaneously integrates GDL functionality and exposes abundant solid–liquid–gas triple-phase boundaries. The resulting Ni-MOF@ZIF-L heterostructure demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a formate Faradaic efficiency of 92.4% while suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to 6.7%. Through computational modeling of the optimized heterojunction configuration, we further elucidated its competitive adsorption behavior and electronic modulation effects. The experimental and theoretical results demonstrate an improvement in electrochemical CO2 reduction activity with suppressed hydrogen evolution for the heterojunction because of its hydrophobic interface, good electron transfer capability, and high CO2 adsorption at the catalyst interface. This work provides a new insight into the rational design of porous crystalline materials in electrocatalytic CO2RR. Full article

This study investigates the short- and long-run drivers of natural gas consumption in the European Union using an ARDL bounds testing approach. The analysis incorporates GDP per capita, liquid fuel use, and solid fuel use as explanatory variables. Augmented Dickey–Fuller tests confirm mixed integration orders, allowing valid ARDL estimation. The results reveal a statistically significant long-run relationship (cointegration) between gas consumption and the energy–economic system. In the short run, the use of liquid fuel exerts a strong positive influence on gas demand, while the effects of GDP materialise only after a two-year lag. Solid fuels show a delayed substitutive impact, reflecting the ongoing transition from coal. An error correction model confirms rapid convergence to equilibrium, with 77% of deviations corrected within one period. Recursive residual and CUSUM tests indicate structural stability over time. These findings highlight the responsiveness of EU gas demand to both economic and policy signals, offering valuable insights for energy modelling and strategic planning under the European Green Deal. The biomass-to-liquid process is a promising alternative for sustainably meeting the growing demand for liquid fuels. This study focuses on the fabrication, characterization, and performance of a structured iron catalyst for producing hydrocarbons through Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The catalyst was designed to address some drawbacks of conventional supported catalysts, such as low utilization, poor activity, and instability. The experimental investigation involved the manufacturing and characterization of both promoted and unpromoted iron-based catalysts. The performance of the structured iron catalyst was assessed in a fixed-bed reactor under relevant industrial conditions. Notably, the best results were achieved with a syngas ratio typical of the gasification of lignocellulosic biomass, where the catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity and selectivity toward desired hydrocarbon products, including light olefins and long-chain paraffins. The resulting structured catalyst achieved up to 95% CO conversion in a single pass with 5% selectivity for CH4. The results indicate that the developed structured iron catalyst has considerable potential for efficient and sustainable hydrocarbon production via the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. The catalyst’s performance, enhanced stability, and selectivity present promising opportunities for its application in large-scale hydrocarbon synthesis processes. Full article

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are currently considered a key element in the decarbonization of the aviation sector, offering a feasible solution to reduce life cycle greenhouse gas emissions without requiring fundamental changes in aircraft or infrastructure. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of SAFs, including their classification, production technologies, economic aspects, and environmental performance. The analysis covers both currently certified SAF pathways, such as HEFA and FT-SPK, and emerging technologies like alcohol-to-jet and power-to-liquid, assessing their technological maturity, feedstock availability, and scalability. Economic challenges related to high production costs, investment risks, and policy dependencies are discussed, alongside potential mechanisms to support market deployment. Furthermore, the article reviews SAFs’ emission performance, including CO2 and non-CO2 effects, based on existing life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, with an emphasis on variability caused by feedstock type and production method. The findings highlight that, while SAFs can significantly reduce aviation-related emissions compared to fossil jet fuels, the magnitude of benefits depends strongly on supply chain design and sustainability criteria. There are various certified pathways for SAF production, as well as new technologies that can further contribute to the development of the industry. Properly selected biomass sources and production technologies can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to conventional fuels. The implementation of SAFs faces obstacles related to cost, infrastructure, and regulations, which hinder its widespread adoption. The study concludes that although SAFs represent a promising pathway for aviation climate mitigation, substantial scaling efforts, regulatory support, and continued technological innovation are essential to achieve their full potential. This paper presents a techno-economic assessment of liquid hydrogen produced from small modular reactors (SMRs) for maritime applications. Pink hydrogen is examined as a carbon-free alternative to conventional marine fuels, leveraging the zero-emission profile and dispatchable nature of nuclear energy. Using Greece as a case study, the analysis includes both production and transportation costs, along with a sensitivity analysis on key parameters influencing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH), such as SMR and electrolyzer CAPEX, uranium cost, and SMR operational lifetime. Results show that with an SMR CAPEX of 10,000 EUR/kW, the LCOH reaches 6.64 EUR/kg, which is too high to compete with diesel under current market conditions. Economic viability is achieved only if carbon costs rise to 0.387 EUR/kg and diesel prices exceed 0.70 EUR/L. Under these conditions, a manageable deployment of fewer than 1000 units (equivalent to 77 GW) is sufficient to achieve economies of mass production. Conversely, lower carbon and fuel prices require over 10,000 units (770 GW), rendering their establishment impractical. Full article

Climate change resulting from human development necessitates increased land use, food, and energy consumption, underscoring the need for sustainable development. Incorporating various feedstocks into value-added liquid fuels and bioproducts is essential for achieving sustainability. Most biomass consists of cell walls, which serve as a primary carbon source for bioenergy and biorefinery processes. This structure contains a cellulose core, where lignin and hemicelluloses are crosslinked and embedded in a pectin matrix, forming diverse polysaccharide architectures across different species and tissues. Nineteen agro-industrial waste products were analyzed for their potential use in a circular economy. The analysis included cell wall composition, saccharification, and calorific potential. Thermal capacity and degradation were similar among the evaluated wastes. The feedstocks of corn cob, corn straw, soybean husk, and industry paper residue exhibited a higher saccharification capacity despite having lower lignin and uronic acid contents, with cell walls comprising 30% glucose and 60% xylose. Therefore, corn, soybeans, industrial paper residue, and sugarcane are more promising for bioethanol production. Additionally, duckweed, barley, sorghum, wheat, rice, bean, and coffee residues could serve as feedstocks for other by-products in green chemistry, generating valuable products. Our findings show that agro-industrial residues display a variety of polymers that are functional for various applications in different industry sectors. Full article

This study focuses on addressing the issues of water flooding and mass transfer limitations in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) under high current density conditions. A multi-scale gradient pore gas diffusion layer (GDL) is designed to enhance fuel cell performance. The pore structure is precisely controlled using a self-assembled mold, resulting in the fabrication of a GDL with a gradient distribution of pore diameters ranging from 80 to 170 μm. Experimental results indicate that, with the optimized gradient pore GDL, the peak power density of the fuel cell reaches 1.18 W·cm−2, representing a 20% improvement compared to the traditional structure. A mechanism analysis reveals that this structure establishes a concentrated water transport pathway through channels while enabling gas diffusion and transport driven by concentration gradients, thereby achieving the collaborative optimization of gas–liquid transport. This approach offers a novel solution for managing water in PEMFCs operating under high current density conditions, and holds significant implications for advancing the commercialization of PEMFC technology.
