Amid China’s national strategic prioritization of the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle and accelerated territorial spatial planning, this study deciphered the synergistic evolution of Land Use Intensity (LUI) and Balance Degree of Land Use Structure (BDLUS) during rapid urbanization. Leveraging 1 km grid units and integrating emerging spatiotemporal hotspot analysis, BFAST, and geographic detectors, we systematically analyzed spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of LUI, BDLUS, and their Coupling Coordination Degree (CCD) from 2000 to 2022. Key findings: (1) LUI strongly correlated with economic growth, with core areas reaching high-intensity development (average > 2.96) versus ecologically constrained marginal zones (<2.42), marked by abrupt changes during 2011–2014; (2) BDLUS improvements covered 82.22% of the study area, driven by the Yangtze River Economic Belt strategy (21.96% hotspot concentration), yet structural imbalance persisted in transitional zones (18.81% cold spots); (3) CCD exhibited center-edge dichotomy, contrasting high-value cores (CCD > 0.68) with ecologically sensitive edges (9.80% cold spots), peaking in regulatory shifts around 2010; (4) terrain constraints and intensified human activities (the interaction effect between nighttime lighting and population density increased by 219.49% after 2020) jointly governed coupling mechanisms, with urbanization and industrial transition becoming dominant drivers. This research advances an “intensity–structure–coordination” framework and elucidates “dual-core resonance” dynamics, offering theoretical foundations for spatial optimization and ecological civilization. With the global economic restructuring and the consequent population mobility, urban shrinkage has become a common phenomenon. The Qinling–Daba Mountains, a zone with a key ecological function in China, have long experienced population decline and functional degradation. Clarifying the dynamics and influencing factors of urban shrinkage plays a vital role in supporting the sustainable development of the region. This study, using permanent resident population growth rates and nighttime light data, classified cities in the region into four spatial patterns: expansion–growth, intensive growth, expansion–shrinkage, and intensive shrinkage. It further examined the spatial characteristics of shrinkage across four periods (2005–2010, 2010–2015, 2015–2020, and 2020–2022). A Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model was applied to examine core influencing factors and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The results indicated the following: (1) The dominant pattern of urban shrinkage in the Qinling–Daba Mountains shifted from expansion–growth to expansion–shrinkage, highlighting the paradox of population decline alongside continued spatial expansion. (2) Three critical indicators significantly influenced urban shrinkage: the number of students enrolled in general secondary schools (X5), the per capita disposable income of urban residents (X7), and the number of commercial and residential service facilities (X12), with their effects exhibiting significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Temporally, X12 was the most influential factor in 2005 and 2010, while in 2015, 2020, and 2022, X5 and X7 became the dominant factors. Spatially, X7 significantly affected both eastern and western areas; X5’s influence was most pronounced in the west; and X12 had the greatest impact in the east. This study explored the patterns and underlying drivers of urban shrinkage in underdeveloped areas, aiming to inform sustainable development practices in regions facing comparable challenges. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have rapidly grown into different essential applications, including surveillance, disaster response, agriculture, and urban monitoring. However, for UAVS to steer safely and autonomously, the ability to detect obstacles and nearby aircraft remains crucial, especially under hard environmental conditions. This study comprehensively analyzes the recent landscape of obstacle and aircraft detection techniques tailored for UAVs acting in difficult scenarios such as fog, rain, smoke, low light, motion blur, and disorderly environments. It starts with a detailed discussion of key detection challenges and continues with an evaluation of different sensor types, from RGB and infrared cameras to LiDAR, radar, sonar, and event-based vision sensors. Both classical computer vision methods and deep learning-based detection techniques are examined in particular, highlighting their performance strengths and limitations under degraded sensing conditions. The paper additionally offers an overview of suitable UAV-specific datasets and the evaluation metrics generally used to evaluate detection systems. Finally, the paper examines open problems and coming research directions, emphasising the demand for lightweight, adaptive, and weather-resilient detection systems appropriate for real-time onboard processing. This study aims to guide students and engineers towards developing stronger and intelligent detection systems for next-generation UAV operations. Full article

Simulation has become a pivotal tool in the design, analysis, and optimization of the built environment, and has been widely adopted by professionals in architecture, engineering, and urban planning. These techniques enable stakeholders to test hypotheses, evaluate design alternatives, and predict performance outcomes prior to construction. Applications span energy consumption, airflow, thermal comfort, lighting, structural behavior, and human interactions within buildings and urban contexts. This study maps the scientific landscape of simulation research in the built environment through a bibliometric analysis of 12,220 publications indexed in Scopus. Using VOSviewer 1.6.20, it conducted citation and keyword co-occurrence analyses to identify key research themes, leading countries and journals, and central publications in the field. The analysis revealed seven primary thematic clusters: (1) human-focused simulation, (2) building-scale energy performance simulation, (3) urban-scale energy performance simulation, (4) sustainable design and simulation, (5) indoor environmental quality simulation, (6) building aerodynamics simulation, and (7) computing in building simulation. By synthesizing these trends and domains, this study provides an overview of the field, facilitating greater accessibility to the simulation literature and informing future interdisciplinary research and practice in the built environment. Understanding groundwater and surface water interaction is critical for managing water resources, particularly in water-stressed and rapidly urbanizing areas, such as many parts of Africa. A survey was conducted of borehole, spring, seep and river water radon, δ2H, δ18O and field parameters in the Jukskei River catchment, Johannesburg. Average values of electrical conductivity (EC) were 274 and 411 μS·cm−1 for groundwater and surface water, and similarly for radon, 37,000 and 1100 Bq·m−3, with a groundwater high of 196,000 Bq·m−3 associated with a structural lineament. High radon was a good indicator of baseflow, highest at the end of the rainy season (March) and lowest at the end of the dry season (September), with the FINIFLUX model computing groundwater inflow as 2.5–4.7 L·m−1s−1. High EC was a poorer indicator of baseflow, also considering the possibility of wastewater with high EC, typical in urban areas. Groundwater δ2H and δ18O values are spread widely, suggesting recharge from both normal and unusual rainfall periods. A slight shift from the local meteoric water line indicates light evaporation during recharge. Surface water δ2H and δ18O is clustered, pointing to regular groundwater input along the stream, supporting the findings from radon. Given the importance of groundwater, further study using the same parameters or additional analytes is advisable in the urban area of Johannesburg or other cities. Full article

In light of the increasing frequency and intensity of natural phenomena, whether climatic or telluric, the relevance of multi-risk assessment approaches has become an important issue for understanding and estimating the impacts of disasters on complex socioeconomic systems. Two aspects contribute to the worsening of this situation. First, climate change has heightened the incidence and, in conjunction, the seriousness of geohazards that often occur with each other. Second, the complexity of these impacts on societies is drastically exacerbated by the interconnections between urban areas, industrial sites, power or water networks, and vulnerable ecosystems. In front of the recent research on this problem, and the necessity to figure out the best scientific positioning to address it, we propose, through this review analysis, to revisit existing literature on multi-risk assessment methodologies. By this means, we emphasize the new recent research frameworks able to produce determinant advances. Our selection corpus identifies pertinent scientific publications from various sources, including personal bibliographic databases, but also OpenAlex outputs and Web of Science contents. We evaluated these works from different criteria and key findings, using indicators inspired by the PRISMA bibliometric method. Through this comprehensive analysis of recent advances in multi-risk assessment approaches, we highlight main issues that the scientific community should address in the coming years, we identify the different kinds of geohazards concerned, the way to integrate them in a multi-risk approach, and the characteristics of the presented case studies. The results underscore the urgency of developing robust, adaptable methodologies, effectively able to capture the complexities of multi-risk scenarios. This challenge should be at the basis of the keys and solutions contributing to more resilient socioeconomic systems. Full article

Accurate and robust spatial perception is fundamental for dynamic 3D city modeling and urban environmental sensing. High-resolution remote sensing data, particularly LiDAR point clouds, are pivotal for these tasks due to their lighting invariance and precise geometric information. However, processing and aligning sequential LiDAR point clouds in complex urban environments presents significant challenges: traditional point-based or feature-matching methods are often sensitive to urban dynamics (e.g., moving vehicles and pedestrians) and struggle to establish reliable correspondences. While deep learning offers solutions, current approaches for point cloud alignment exhibit key limitations: self-supervised losses often neglect inherent alignment uncertainties, and supervised methods require costly pixel-level correspondence annotations. To address these challenges, we propose UnMinkLO-Net, an end-to-end self-supervised LiDAR odometry framework. Our method is as follows: (1) we efficiently encode 3D point cloud structures using voxel-based sparse convolution, and (2) we model inherent alignment uncertainty via covariance matrices, enabling novel self-supervised loss based on uncertainty modeling. Extensive evaluations on the KITTI urban dataset demonstrate UnMinkLO-Net’s effectiveness in achieving highly accurate point cloud registration. Our self-supervised approach, eliminating the need for manual annotations, provides a powerful foundation for processing and analyzing LiDAR data within multi-sensor urban sensing frameworks. What Determines Carbon Emissions of Multimodal Travel? Insights from Interpretable Machine Learning on Mobility Trajectory Data

Understanding the carbon emissions of multimodal travel—comprising walking, metro, bus, cycling, and ride-hailing—is essential for promoting sustainable urban mobility. However, most existing studies focus on single-mode travel, while underlying spatiotemporal and behavioral determinants remain insufficiently explored due to the lack of fine-grained data and interpretable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a novel integration of high-frequency, real-world mobility trajectory data with interpretable machine learning to systematically identify the key drivers of carbon emissions at the individual trip level. Firstly, multimodal travel chains are reconstructed using continuous GPS trajectory data collected in Beijing. Secondly, a model based on Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) is developed to quantify trip-level CO2 emissions. Thirdly, four interpretable machine learning models based on gradient boosting—XGBoost, GBDT, LightGBM, and CatBoost—are trained using transportation and built environment features to model the relationship between CO2 emissions and a set of explanatory variables; finally, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are used to interpret the model outputs, revealing key determinants and their non-linear interaction effects. The results show that transportation-related features account for 75.1% of the explained variance in emissions, with bus usage being the most influential single factor (contributing 22.6%). Built environment features explain the remaining 24.9%. The PDP analysis reveals that substantial emission reductions occur only when the shares of bus, metro, and cycling surpass threshold levels of approximately 40%, 40%, and 30%, respectively. Additionally, travel carbon emissions are minimized when trip origins and destinations are located within a 10 to 11 km radius of the central business district (CBD). This study advances the field by establishing a scalable, interpretable, and behaviorally grounded framework to assess carbon emissions from multimodal travel, providing actionable insights for low-carbon transport planning and policy design. The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

Dark skies, a vital natural and cultural resource, have been increasingly threatened by light pollution due to rapid urbanization, leading to ecological degradation and biodiversity loss. As a key strategy for sustainable regional development, dark sky parks (DSPs) not only preserve nocturnal environments but also enhance livability by balancing urban expansion and ecological conservation. This study develops a novel framework for evaluating DSP suitability, integrating ecological and socio-economic dimensions, including the resource base (e.g., nighttime light levels, meteorological conditions, and air quality) and development conditions (e.g., population density, transportation accessibility, and tourism infrastructure). Using the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a case study, we employ Delphi expert consultation, GIS spatial analysis, and multi-criteria decision-making to identify optimal DSP locations and prioritize conservation zones. Our key findings reveal the following: (1) spatial heterogeneity in suitability, with high-potential zones being concentrated in the GBA’s northeastern, central–western, and southern regions; (2) ecosystem advantages of forests, wetlands, and high-elevation areas for minimizing light pollution; (3) coastal and island regions as ideal DSP sites due to the low light interference and high ecotourism potential. By bridging environmental assessments and spatial planning, this study provides a replicable model for DSP site selection, offering policymakers actionable insights to integrate dark sky preservation into sustainable urban–regional development strategies. Our results underscore the importance of DSPs in fostering ecological resilience, nighttime tourism, and regional livability, contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable landscape planning in high-urbanization contexts. The use of multimodal data can effectively compensate for the lack of temporal resolution in streetscape imagery-based studies and achieve hourly refinement in the study of street walkability dynamics. Exploring the 24 h dynamic pattern of urban street walkability and its diurnal variation characteristics is a crucial step in understanding and responding to the accelerated urban metabolism. Aiming at the shortcomings of existing studies, which are mostly limited to static assessment or only at coarse time scales, this study integrates multimodal data such as streetscape images, remote sensing images of nighttime lights, and text-described crowd activity information and introduces a novel approach to enhance the simulation of pedestrian perception through a visual–textual multimodal deep learning model. A baseline model for dynamic assessment of walkability with street as a spatial unit and hour as a time granularity is generated. In order to deeply explore the dynamic regulation mechanism of street walkability under the influence of diurnal shift, the 24 h dynamic score of walkability is calculated, and the quantification system of walkability diurnal change characteristics is further proposed. The results of spatio-temporal cluster analysis and quantitative calculations show that the intensity of economic activities and pedestrian experience significantly shape the diurnal pattern of walkability, e.g., urban high-energy areas (e.g., along the riverside) show unique nocturnal activity characteristics and abnormal recovery speeds during the dawn transition. This study fills the gap in the study of hourly street dynamics at the micro-scale, and its multimodal assessment framework and dynamic quantitative index system provide important references for future urban spatial dynamics planning. Urban areas are responsible for most of Europe’s energy demand and emissions and urgently require building retrofits to meet climate neutrality goals. This study evaluates the energy efficiency potential of three public school buildings in western Macedonia, Greece—a cold-climate region with high heating needs. The buildings, constructed between 1986 and 2003, exhibited poor insulation, outdated electromechanical systems, and inefficient lighting, resulting in high oil consumption and low energy ratings. A robust methodology is applied, combining detailed on-site energy audits, thermophysical diagnostics based on U-value calculations, and a techno-economic assessment utilizing Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and SWOT analysis. The study evaluates a series of retrofit measures, including ceiling insulation, high-efficiency lighting replacements, and boiler modernization, against both technical performance criteria and financial viability. Results indicate that ceiling insulation and lighting system upgrades yield positive economic returns, while wall and floor insulation measures remain financially unattractive without external subsidies. The findings are further validated through sensitivity analysis and policy scenario modeling, revealing how targeted investments, especially when supported by public funding schemes, can maximize energy savings and emissions reductions. The study concludes that selective implementation of cost-effective measures, supported by public grants, can achieve energy targets, improve indoor environments, and serve as a replicable model of targeted retrofits across the region, though reliance on external funding and high upfront costs pose challenges. The Effects of Natural and Social Factors on Surface Temperature in a Typical Cold-Region City of the Northern Temperate Zone: A Case Study of Changchun, China

Land cover, topography, precipitation, and socio-economic factors exert both direct and indirect influences on urban land surface temperatures. Within the broader context of global climate change, these influences are magnified by the escalating intensity of the urban heat island effect. However, the interplay and underlying mechanisms of natural and socio-economic determinants of land surface temperatures remain inadequately explored, particularly in the context of cold-region cities located in the northern temperate zone of China. This study focuses on Changchun City, employing multispectral remote sensing imagery to derive and spatially map the distribution of land surface temperatures and topographic attributes. Through comprehensive analysis, the research identifies the principal drivers of temperature variations and delineates their seasonal dynamics. The findings indicate that population density, night-time light intensity, land use, GDP (Gross Domestic Product), relief, and elevation exhibit positive correlations with land surface temperature, whereas slope demonstrates a negative correlation. Among natural factors, the correlations of slope, relief, and elevation with land surface temperature are comparatively weak, with determination coefficients (R2) consistently below 0.15. In contrast, socio-economic factors exert a more pronounced influence, ranked as follows: population density (R2 = 0.4316) > GDP (R2 = 0.2493) > night-time light intensity (R2 = 0.1626). The overall hierarchy of the impact of individual factors on the temperature model, from strongest to weakest, is as follows: population, night-time light intensity, land use, GDP, slope, relief, and elevation. In examining Changchun and analogous cold-region cities within the northern temperate zone, the research underscores that socio-economic factors substantially outweigh natural determinants in shaping urban land surface temperatures. Notably, human activities catalyzed by population growth emerge as the most influential factor, profoundly reshaping the urban thermal landscape. These activities not only directly escalate anthropogenic heat emissions, but also alter land cover compositions, thereby undermining natural cooling mechanisms and exacerbating the urban heat island phenomenon. Urban expansion will squeeze the green space system and cause ecological fragmentation. The question of how to expand cities more scientifically and build eco-cities has become an important topic of sustainable urban construction. This paper takes Shanghai as a research case. A deep neural network combined with an attention mechanism model measures the comprehensive level of the built environment and green space pattern of urbanization and quantitatively analyzes the coordinated relationship between the two using the coupled degree of coordination model. Subsequently, the K-Means clustering model was used for spatial clustering to determine the governance and construction directions for different spatial areas and was, finally, combined with the LightGBM model plus SHAP to analyze the importance and threshold effect of the indicators on the degree of coupled coordination. The results of the study show that (1) the core area of the city shows a high state of coordination, indicating that Shanghai has a better green space construction in the central city, but the periphery shows different imbalances; (2) three different kinds of areas are identified, and different governance measures as well as the direction of urbanization are proposed according to the characteristics of the different areas; and (3) this study finds that the structural indicators of the built environment, such as Average Compactness, Weighted Average Height, and Land Use Diversity, have a significant influence on the coupling coordination degree and have different response thresholds. The results of the study provide theoretical support for regional governance and suggestions for the direction of urban expansion for sustainable urbanization. Full article

Traffic crashes represent a major challenge for road safety, public health, and mobility management in complex urban environments, particularly in metropolitan areas characterized by intense traffic flows, high population density, and strong commuter dynamics. The development of short-term traffic crash prediction models represents a fundamental line of analysis in road safety research within the scientific community. Among these efforts, macro-level modeling plays a key role by enabling the analysis of the spatiotemporal relationships between diverse factors at an aggregated zonal scale. However, in cities like Bogotá, predicting short-term traffic crashes remains challenging due to the complexity of these spatiotemporal dynamics, underscoring the need for models that more effectively integrate spatial and temporal data. This paper presents a strategy based on deep learning techniques to predict short-term spatiotemporal traffic crashes in Bogotá using 2019 data on socioeconomic, land use, mobility, weather, lighting, and crash records across TMAU and TAZ zones. The results showed that the strategy performed with a model called SpatioConvGru-Net with top performance at the TMAU level, achieving R2 = 0.983, MSE = 0.017, and MAPE = 5.5%. Its hybrid design captured spatiotemporal patterns better than CNN, LSTM, and others. Performance improved at the TAZ level using transfer learning. Full article
