This study presents the scientific and methodological foundation of Spain’s first national framework for the ethical management of community cat populations: the Action Plan for the Management of Community Cat Colonies (PACF), launched in 2025 under the mandate of Law 7/2023. This pioneering legislation introduces a standardized, nationwide obligation for trap–neuter–return (TNR)-based management of free-roaming cats, defined as animals living freely, territorially attached, and with limited socialization toward humans. The PACF aims to support municipalities in implementing this mandate through evidence-based strategies that integrate animal welfare, biodiversity protection, and public health objectives. Using standardized data submitted by 1128 municipalities (13.9% of Spain’s total), we estimated a baseline population of 1.81 million community cats distributed across 125,000 colonies. These data were stratified by municipal population size and applied to national census figures to generate a model-ready demographic structure. We then implemented a stochastic simulation using Vortex software to project long-term population dynamics over a 25-year horizon. The model integrated eight demographic–environmental scenarios defined by a combination of urban–rural classification and ecological reproductive potential based on photoperiod and winter temperature. Parameters included reproductive output, mortality, sterilization coverage, abandonment and adoption rates, stochastic catastrophic events, and territorial carrying capacity. Under current sterilization rates (~20%), our projections indicate that Spain’s community cat population could surpass 5 million individuals by 2050, saturating ecological and social thresholds within a decade. In contrast, a differentiated sterilization strategy aligned with territorial reproductive intensity (50% in most areas, 60–70% in high-pressure zones) achieves population stabilization by 2030 at approximately 1.5 million cats, followed by a gradual long-term decline. This scenario prioritizes feasibility while substantially reducing reproductive output, particularly in rural and high-intensity contexts. The PACF combines stratified demographic modeling with spatial sensitivity, offering a flexible framework adaptable to local conditions. It incorporates One Health principles and introduces tools for adaptive management, including digital monitoring platforms and standardized welfare protocols. While ecological impacts were not directly assessed, the proposed demographic stabilization is designed to mitigate population-driven risks to biodiversity and public health without relying on lethal control. By integrating legal mandates, stratified modeling, and realistic intervention goals, this study outlines a replicable and scalable framework for coordinated action across administrative levels. It exemplifies how national policy can be operationalized through data-driven, territorially sensitive planning tools. The findings support the strategic deployment of TNR-based programs across diverse municipal contexts, providing a model for other countries seeking to align animal welfare policy with ecological planning under a multi-level governance perspective. Background: Accurate estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is critical in forensic death investigations. Traditional signs of death—algor mortis, livor mortis, and rigor mortis—are generally reliable only within the first two to three days after death, with their accuracy decreasing as decomposition progresses. This paper presents a systematic review conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, aiming to evaluate and compare current methods for estimating the PMI. Specifically, the study identifies both traditional and modern techniques, analyzes their advantages, limitations, and applicable timeframes, critically synthesizes the literature, and highlights the importance of combining multiple approaches to improve accuracy. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA guidelines. The review included original articles and reviews that evaluated PMI estimation methods (through thanatological signs, entomology, microbial succession, molecular, imaging, and omics approaches). Extracted data included study design, methodology, PMI range, and accuracy information. Out of the 1245 identified records, 50 studies met the inclusion criteria for qualitative synthesis. Results: Emerging methods, such as molecular markers, microbial succession, omics technologies, and advanced imaging show improved accuracy across extended postmortem intervals. RNA degradation methods demonstrated higher accuracy within the first 72 h, while entomology and microbial analysis are more applicable during intermediate and late decomposition stages. Although no single method is universally reliable, combining traditional and modern approaches tailored to case-specific factors improves overall PMI estimation accuracy. Conclusions: This study supports the use of an integrative, multidisciplinary, and evidence-based approach to improve time-since-death estimation. Such a strategy enhances forensic outcomes by enabling more precise PMI estimates in complex or delayed cases, increasing legal reliability, and supporting court-admissible expert testimony based on validated, multi-method protocols. Background: The dual nature of cannabis, as both a promising therapeutic tool and a widely used recreational substance with potential risks, raises important societal controversies, including its unclear impacts regarding mental health. This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of cannabis, addressing (i) its historical context; (ii) its chemical composition and pharmacokinetics; (iii) its pharmacological effects; (iv) its negative impacts on physiological and mental health; (v) its potential use as a drug for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders; (vi) its relationship with the gut microbiome and how this interaction might influence mental functioning; (vii) the pathophysiology, prevalence, comorbidities, and treatment strategies of cannabis use disorder; and (viii) social perspectives on its legalization. Results: Cannabis presents a complex chemical profile and pharmacokinetics that show promise in treating numerous neurological, psychiatric, and psychological conditions. However, its use carries risks, which depend on factors such as compound concentration, dosage, consumption method, frequency of use, and individual vulnerability. Cannabis use disorder seems to be less severe than other substance use disorders, but it still constitutes a significant concern, as its manifestation is not uniform across all users. Conclusions: Cannabis demands a thorough understanding that goes beyond simplistic explanations and prejudices, standing as a plant of substantial clinical significance and highlighting the importance of personalized approaches to its use and increased awareness of how individuals respond to its effects. The environmental impact of milk production, particularly its share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is a topic under investigation in various parts of the world. This paper presents an overview of current knowledge on the carbon footprint (CF) of milk production at the farm level, with a particular focus on technological, environmental and organisational factors affecting emission levels. The analysis is based on a review of, inter alia, 46 peer-reviewed publications and 11 environmental reports, legal acts and databases concerning the CF in different regions and under various production systems. This study identifies the main sources of emissions, including enteric fermentation, manure management, and the production and use of feed and fertiliser. It also demonstrates the significant variability of the CF values, which range, on average, from 0.78 to 3.20 kg CO2 eq kg−1 of milk, determined by the farm scale, nutritional strategies, local environmental and economic determinants, and the methodology applied. Moreover, this study stresses that higher production efficiency and integrated farm management could reduce the CF per milk unit, with further intensification having, however, diminishing effects. The application of life cycle assessment (LCA) methods is essential for a reliable assessment and comparison of the CF between systems. Ultimately, an effective CF reduction requires a comprehensive approach that combines improved nutritional practices, efficient use of resources, and implementation of technological innovations adjusted to regional and farm-specific determinants. The solutions presented in this paper may serve as guidelines for practitioners and decision-makers with regard to reducing GHG emissions. Full article

Autobrewery syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the endogenous fermentation of carbohydrates by gut microbiota, which exceeds the liver’s detoxification capacity and leads to signs and symptoms of acute alcohol intoxication. This condition has significant clinical, social, and legal implications. Beyond the acute effects, the role of excessive endogenous ethanol production in the progression of chronic diseases—particularly liver disease—is still under investigation. In this review, we aim to describe the key clinical features of autobrewery syndrome, identify the main microbial pathogens involved, and explore the potential impact of endogenous ethanol production on the development and progression of chronic liver disease. Although robust data and standardized treatment protocols are currently lacking, we discuss the general principles of management and outline possible therapeutic strategies and future perspectives. Small news media organizations are increasingly reshaping the news media system in Latin America. They are stepping into the role of watchdogs by investigating issues such as corruption scandals that larger outlets sometimes overlook. However, this journalistic work exposes both journalists and their organizations to a range of security threats, including physical violence, legal pressure, and digital attacks. In response, these outlets have developed coping strategies to manage and mitigate such risks. This article presents an exploratory study of the approaches adopted to protect information and data, ensure the safety and well-being of journalists, and maintain organizational continuity. Based on a series of in-depth interviews with leaders of award-winning news organizations for their investigative reporting, the study examines a shift from a competitive newsroom model to a collaborative approach in which information is shared—sometimes across borders—to support investigative reporting and strengthen security practices. We identify strategies implemented by small news organizations to safeguard their journalistic work and propose an integrative model of news safety encompassing the following three areas of security: physical, legal, and digital. This study contributes to the development of the newsafety framework and sheds light on safety practices that support media freedom. Full article

Volcanic islands host exceptional geological features that illustrate complex endogenic processes and interactions with climatic and marine forces, while also being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Despite their scientific, educational, touristic, and aesthetic values, such islands remain underrepresented within the UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp). This study reviews current volcanic island geoparks and evaluates territories with potential for future designation, based on documented geoheritage, geosite inventories, and geoconservation frameworks. Geoparks are categorized according to their dominant narratives—ranging from recent Quaternary volcanism to broader tectonic, sedimentary, and metamorphic histories. Through an analysis of their distribution, management strategies, and integration into territorial planning, this work highlights the challenges that insular territories face, including vulnerability to global environmental change, limited legal protection, and structural inequalities in access to international resources recognition. It concludes that volcanic island geoparks represent strategic platforms for implementing sustainable development models, especially in ecologically and socially fragile contexts. Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) has been identified as one of the most harmful invasive weed species in Europe due to its allergenic pollen and competitive growth in diverse habitats. In the first part of this review [Common Ragweed—Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.: A Review with Special Regards to the Latest Results in Biology and Ecology], its biological characteristics and ecological behavior were described in detail. In the current paper, control strategies are summarized, focusing on integrated weed management adapted to the specific habitat where the species causes damage—arable land, semi-natural vegetation, urban areas, or along linear infrastructures. A range of management methods is reviewed, including agrotechnical, mechanical, physical, thermal, biological, and chemical approaches. Particular attention is given to the spread of herbicide resistance and the need for diversified, habitat-specific interventions. Among biological control options, the potential of Ophraella communa LeSage, a leaf beetle native to North America, is highlighted. Furthermore, innovative technologies such as UAV-assisted weed mapping, site-specific herbicide application, and autonomous weeding robots are discussed as environmentally sustainable tools. The role of legal regulations and pollen monitoring networks—particularly those implemented in Hungary—is also emphasized. By combining traditional and advanced methods within a coordinated framework, effective and ecologically sound ragweed control can be achieved. Full article

The growing urban population has made densification a key focus of urban development. It is crucial to create an urban planning strategy that understands the environmental, social, and economic effects of densification at both the district and city levels. In Switzerland, densification is a legally binding aim to foster housing and jobs within urban boundaries. The challenge is to accommodate population growth while maintaining a high quality of life. Zurich exemplifies this situation, necessitating the accommodation of approximately 25% of the anticipated increase in both the resident population and associated workplaces, as of 2016. This study examined the effects of urban densification on urban forms and microclimates in the Altstetten–Albisrieden district. It developed five densification scenarios based on current urban initiatives and assessed their impacts. Results showed that the current Building and Zoning Plan provides sufficient capacity to accommodate growth. Strategies such as densifying parcels older than fifty years and adding floors to newer buildings were found to minimally impact existing urban forms. Using the SOLWEIG model in the Urban Multi-scale Environmental Predictor (UMEP), this study simulated mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) in the selected urban areas. The results demonstrated that densification reduced daytime average temperatures by 0.60 °C and diurnal averages by 0.23 °C, but increased average nighttime temperatures by 0.38 °C. This highlights the importance of addressing warm nights. The study concludes that well-planned densification can significantly contribute to urban liveability, emphasising the need for thoughtful building design to improve outdoor thermal comfort. The objective of this study is to define groundwater management zones for a complex deformed and fissured Precambrian karst aquifer, which underlies one of the most important agricultural areas in the semi-arid region of Irecê, Bahia, Brazil. It is an unconfined aquifer, hundreds of meters thick, resulting from a large sequence of carbonates piled up by thrust faults during tectonic plate collisions. Groundwater recharge and flow in this aquifer are greatly influenced by karst features, through the high density of sinkholes and vertical wells. Over the past four decades, population and agricultural activities have increased in the region, resulting in unsustainable groundwater withdrawal and, at the same time, water quality degradation. Therefore, it is important to develop legal and environmental management strategies. This work proposes the division of the karst area into three well-defined management zones by mapping karst structures, land use, and urban occupation, as well as the concentrations of chloride and nitrate in the region’s groundwater. Zone 1 in the north possesses the lowest levels of karstification, anthropization, and contamination, while zone 2 in the central region has the highest levels and zone 3 in the south ranging in-between (except for stronger karstification). The delimitation of management zones will contribute to the development and implementation of optimized zone-specific groundwater preservation and restoration strategies. Full article

This study examines the role of public–private partnerships in promoting the sustainable development of travel destinations through a comparative analysis of two emblematic heritage-based hospitality projects: Dar Tantora in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia, and Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Matera, Italy. These case studies were analysed through both architectural–urban and economic–legal perspectives to highlight how public–private partnership models can support heritage conservation, community engagement, and responsible tourism development. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative indicators—such as projected profitability, tourist volume, and employment—with qualitative insights from interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis reveals that while both models prioritise cultural authenticity and adaptive reuse, they differ significantly in funding structures, legal frameworks, and governance dynamics. Dar Tantora exemplifies a top-down, publicly funded model integrated into Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, whereas Sextantio reflects a bottom-up, private initiative rooted in social enterprise. The findings offer insights into how different public–private partnership configurations can foster sustainable tourism development, depending on local context, institutional frameworks, and strategic goals. The study contributes to the broader discourse on regenerative tourism, architectural conservation, and policy-driven heritage reuse. Full article

In the context of wastewater treatment plant optimization, this study presents a novel approach based on a virtual sensor architecture designed to estimate total nitrogen levels in effluent and assess plant performance using an operational indicator. The core of the system is an intelligent agent that integrates real-time sensor data with machine learning models to infer nitrogen dynamics and anticipate deviations from optimal operating conditions. Central to this strategy is the operational nitrogen indicator (ONI), a weighted aggregation of four sub-indicators: legal compliance (Nactual%), the nitrogen dynamic trend (Tnitr%), removal efficiency (Enitr%), and microbial balance (NP%), each of which captures a critical dimension of the nitrogen removal process. The ONI enables the early detection of stress conditions and facilitates adaptive decision-making by quantifying operational status in terms of regulatory thresholds, biological requirements, and dynamic stability. This approach contributes to a shift toward smart wastewater treatment plants, where virtual sensing, autonomous control, and throttling-aware diagnostics converge to improve process efficiency, reduce operational risk, and promote environmental compliance. Against the backdrop of ecological civilization construction and regional coordinated development strategies, functional zone (MFOZ) planning guides national spatial development through differentiated policies. However, a prominent conflict exists between the ecological protection responsibilities and regional development rights in restricted and prohibited development zones, leading to a vicious cycle of “ecological protection → restricted development → poverty exacerbation”. This paper focuses on the synergistic mechanisms between ecological compensation and targeted poverty alleviation. Based on the capability approach and sustainable development goals (SDGs), it analyzes the dialectical relationship between the two in terms of goal coupling, institutional design, and practical pathways. The study finds that ecological compensation can break the “ecological poverty trap” through the internalization of externalities and the enhancement of livelihood capabilities. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including low compensation standards, unbalanced benefit distribution, and insufficient legalization. Through case studies of the compensation reform in the water source area of Southern Shaanxi, China, and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union, this paper proposes the construction of a long-term mechanism integrating differentiated compensation standards, market-based fund integration, legal guarantees, and capability enhancement. The research emphasizes the need for institutional innovation to balance ecological protection and livelihood improvement, promoting a transition from “blood transfusion” compensation to “hematopoietic” development, thereby offering a Chinese solution for global sustainable development. This study discusses the role of organizational pro-environmental behavior in driving sustainable development. Studies of green practices highlight their capacity to achieve ecological goals while delivering economic sustainability with business strategies for sustainable businesses and advancing environmental sustainability law. It also considers how the development of artificial intelligence, resource management, big data analysis, blockchain, and the Internet of Things enables companies to maximize supply efficiency and address evolving environmental regulations and sustainable decision-making. Through digital technology, businesses can facilitate supply chain transparency, adopt circular economy practices, and produce in an equitable and environmentally friendly manner. Additionally, intelligent business management practices, such as effective decision-making and sustainability reporting, enhance compliance with authorities while ensuring long-term profitability from a legal perspective. Integrating business innovation and digital technology within legal entities enhances economic efficiency, reduces operational costs, improves environmental sustainability, reduces paper usage, and lowers the carbon footprint, creating a double-benefit model of long-term resilience. The policymakers’ role in formulating policy structures that lead to green digital innovation is also to ensure that economic development worldwide is harmonized with environmental protection and international governance. Using example studies and empirical research raises awareness about best practices in technology-based sustainability initiatives across industries and nations, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This article examines the level of inconsistency in work, health and safety (WHS) laws across Australia’s mining sector. Despite general efforts towards national harmonisation through model WHS legislation, significant inconsistencies persist because individual states and territories retain primary regulatory control. A critical analysis of each jurisdiction’s legislative framework reveals a fragmented legal landscape. Queensland, especially, exhibits notable divergence. Key findings highlight a considerable variation in legislative approaches to risk management principles and specific obligations. In particular, a disjointed and incremental approach to serious offences such as industrial manslaughter and provisions concerning imputed conduct are evident. These inconsistencies suggest that corporations operating in multiple Australian mining regions must develop a nuanced understanding of the varying WHS requirements in each jurisdiction. This study underscores the need for caution when assessing risk management strategies aimed at preventing serious incidents because the presumption of a harmonised system can be misleading, especially concerning mining-specific legislation.
