This study evaluated the effects of thermal and noise stress on rabbits (90 HYLA hybrids), focusing on physiological responses, production performance, and welfare. Three dietary treatments were compared: a control diet (C), a diet supplemented with milk thistle seed cake (SMT), and a diet containing fermented milk thistle seed cake (FMT). The aim was to assess whether these feed additives could mitigate the adverse effects of environmental stress. Health status was monitored through clinical observation and analysis of biochemical indicators, including enzymes, lipid and protein metabolism markers, and total antioxidant status. Thermal stress at the onset of fattening influenced average daily gain, feed intake, and carcass yield, while dietary intervention modulated these effects. The FMT group demonstrated the lowest feed intake and most efficient feed conversion during later growth stages, but had lower slaughter weight compared with the control. In contrast, rabbits fed the SMT diet achieved the highest slaughter weight and superior growth efficiency. These findings suggest that milk thistle, particularly in combination with probiotic fermentation, can enhance feed utilization, growth performance, and stress resilience in rabbits, contributing to more sustainable and welfare-oriented production systems. Background/Objectives: Early cow’s milk formula (CMF) exposure in the neonatal period has been proposed as a risk factor for cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA), although evidence remains inconsistent. This study evaluated the association between CMF use within the first 72 h and later CMPA. Methods: This retrospective study included 106 CMPA infants and 106 controls. CMPA was diagnosed according to ESPGHAN 2024 guidelines using clinical assessment, a 2–4-week elimination diet, and a supervised oral food challenge. Demographic and feeding data were collected, and logistic regression identified independent predictors. Results: Early CMF exposure was more common in the CMPA group (76% vs. 59%; p = 0.006). Multivariate analysis confirmed early CMF exposure as an independent risk factor (aOR: 2.35; 95% CI: 1.18–4.68). A subgroup with CMF intake limited to the first 72 h followed by exclusive breastfeeding was markedly overrepresented among CMPA cases (47% vs. 12%; p < 0.001). Early CMF exposure did not significantly impact IgE versus non-IgE phenotype distribution. Family history of atopy also remained a strong predictor. Conclusions: Early CMF exposure during the first 72 h and family history of atopy were key risk factors for CMPA. Supporting breastfeeding initiation and avoiding unnecessary early CMF supplementation may help reduce CMPA incidence. Full article

Dairy Intake and Iodine Status in Pregnant and Lactating Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background/Objectives: Despite salt iodization, iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation is re-emerging in many industrialized countries, necessitating an evaluation of the role of dairy in supporting iodine status during these critical periods. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Ten databases were searched through March 2025 using ProQuest Dialog™ (Version 75.0). Study quality was assessed using either the Quality Evaluation for Observational Studies tool or the Risk of Bias 2 tool, depending on study design. Random-effects models were applied, with certainty of evidence rated using the GRADE framework. Publication bias, sensitivity analyses, and subgroup analyses were also performed. Results: Fifty-one publications met the eligibility criteria, including 50 publications of observational studies and 1 publication of a randomized controlled trial (RCT), with most studies conducted on pregnant women. Higher dairy intake was associated with significantly greater urinary iodine concentration (UIC), (23 studies; standardized mean difference: 0.326; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.228, 0.424; p < 0.001; I2 = 57.31%; low-certainty), and significantly lower odds of iodine deficiency (11 studies; odds ratio: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.48, 0.70; p < 0.001; I2 = 0%; moderate-certainty). Associations were stronger in studies conducted during later pregnancy, in higher-quality studies, and when the dairy food was specifically milk. Dairy contributed to ~27% of iodine intake from foods. Breast milk iodine concentration (BMIC) findings were inconsistent, though in one RCT, iodine-fortified milk improved BMIC and UIC. Conclusions: Dairy intake supports adequate iodine status during pregnancy and lactation. Background and Objectives: Effective perioperative pain management remains a key goal of enhanced recovery protocols, especially in minimally invasive urologic surgery, where optimizing comfort while limiting opioid exposure is essential. Intravenous lidocaine has gained attention for its multimodal analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, yet evidence in robotic prostatectomy remains limited. This study evaluated whether intraoperative lidocaine infusion was associated with lower early postoperative pain scores and reduced opioid use in patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. Materials and Methods: A retrospective, single-center analysis was conducted at Pelican Clinical Hospital, Oradea, Romania, including 112 patients operated on between January 2020 and December 2023. All procedures were performed by the same surgical and anesthetic teams using standardized ERAS-based protocols. Patients were divided into two groups: the Lidocaine Group (LG, n = 51), who received a bolus of 1.5 mg/kg lidocaine followed by an infusion of 1.5 mg/kg/h during surgery, and the Control Group (CG, n = 61), who received standard anesthesia without lidocaine. Postoperative pain was measured using the visual analog scale (VAS) at 0, 4, 12, and 24 h, and opioid use was converted into morphine milligram equivalents (MME). Secondary outcomes included time to ambulation, gastrointestinal recovery, oral intake, hospital stay, and complications. Results: Pain intensity was significantly lower in the lidocaine group at 4 h postoperatively (VAS 3.5 ± 1.1 vs. 4.3 ± 1.3; p = 0.01), with similar scores later. Total opioid use was reduced by about 18% in the lidocaine group (25.7 ± 9.4 vs. 31.2 ± 10.5 MME; p = 0.03). Recovery parameters and complication rates were comparable between groups, and no lidocaine-related adverse events were recorded. Conclusions: Intraoperative intravenous lidocaine was associated with lower early postoperative pain scores and reduced opioid requirements after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy without affecting recovery or safety. Its favorable profile and low cost support its inclusion as a practical adjunct in multimodal analgesia within ERAS pathways. Full article

Background/Objectives: Shift work and chronotype influence timing and type of food consumed, yet their combined influence is unclear. This study determined differences between temporal patterns of eating (times of first (FEO), last (LEO), and largest eating occasions (LarEO), duration of eating window (DEW), eating frequency) and nutrient intake of night shift workers on and off shift and the additional influence of chronotype. Methods: Participants (46.6 ± 10.2 years, BMI: 33.9 ± 5.6 kg/m2, male/female: 57/72) completed work/sleep/food diaries, and the Composite Scale of Morningness. Dietary profiles were characterized by day type as follows: morning shift (MS), 1st night shift (1stNS), subsequent night shifts (SNS), 1st day off after night shifts (1stDONS), or other days off (DO). Results: Across day types, there were significant differences in FEO (p < 0.001), LEO (p < 0.001), LarEO (p = 0.025), DEW (p < 0.001), eating frequency (p = 0.003), total energy (p = 0.022), and fibre intake (p < 0.001). Compared to MS, all night shifts had later FEO, LEO, and LarEO; 1stNS had longer DEW and higher fibre but no differences in frequency, energy, and macronutrient intake. Greater morningness was associated with earlier FEO, LEO, LarEO, and lower %energy from fat and saturated fat. Effect of chronotype on temporal eating patterns was not different across day types; there was a significant, positive relationship between morningness and %energy from carbohydrate (%EnergyCHO) on MS (p = 0.004) and 1stDONS (p = 0.040). Conclusions: Dietary habits of night shift workers vary by shift schedule and degree of morningness. Further studies will confirm if shift schedule is more influential than chronotype on shift workers’ dietary habits. Full article

Background: Human milk hyaluronan (HA), a glycosaminoglycan with barrier-protective and immunomodulatory functions, may be influenced by maternal characteristics. The effects of maternal obesity and acute dietary intake on milk HA concentrations remain unclear. Methods: This secondary analysis included 35 lactating mothers (n = 19 normal weight [NW], n = 16 obese [OB]) at 6 weeks postpartum who participated in two separate, but standardized, protocols: (1) Study One, which consisted of hourly milk collections for six hours following a standardized high-fat meal with a sugar-sweetened beverage beginning at 6:00 am, and (2) Study Two, which consisted of daily morning milk collections for seven consecutive days to assess temporal stability (Monday-Sunday). HA concentrations were quantified by an ELISA and analyzed using a mixed-effects and repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: In Study One, postprandial HA concentrations remained stable with no effect of time, BMI, or time × BMI interaction (p > 0.05). In Study Two, HA did not vary significantly by day (p = 0.082) but was higher in OB versus NW mothers (151.9 ± 18.7 vs. 96.5 ± 12.4 ng/mL; p = 0.0396), with the largest difference observed on Day 1 (p = 0.0117). Mean HA values trended upward later in the week (Day 6 and 7), suggesting potential influences of habitual dietary intake or weekend energy patterns. Conclusions: Milk HA concentrations were not altered by acute dietary intake but were consistently higher across multiple days in mothers with obesity. These results indicate that milk HA varies with maternal metabolic status and may also be influenced by habitual dietary patterns, including fluctuations between weekday and weekend intake. A free-ranging 10-month-old male American black bear (Ursus americanus) was presented to a rehabilitation facility in eastern Tennessee for being orphaned and emaciated, and was diagnosed with bile duct stenosis, leading to euthanasia. On initial intake, liver values including gamma-glutamyl transferase, alanine aminotransferase, and serum bile acids were elevated. The cub was treated for intestinal parasites and discharged to a rehabilitation facility for monitoring. Three weeks later, all liver values markedly increased despite improvements in body condition, appetite, and overall energy level. Abdominal ultrasound and dual phase computed tomography confirmed stenosis of the biliary outflow tract with gallbladder dilation and bile ducts in two locations. Surgical treatment and release were not performed due to the lack of clinical follow-up, likelihood of a genetic anomaly, and risk of it being passed to offspring. Necropsy findings further confirmed the bile duct stenosis with chronic regionally extensive fibrosis. The cause of this lesion is hypothesized to be congenital; however, inflammation secondary to a previous infection was not able to be ruled out. This case report documents the presentation and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing a juvenile bear with bile duct stenosis, not previously reported in the literature. Full article

Background/Objectives: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common chronic complication of prematurity, associated with significant morbidity. Nutrition is a key modifiable factor influencing lung growth, repair, and overall development. This review summarizes current evidence on nutritional strategies for BPD prevention and management. Methods: Narrative review was conducted with literature search in major databases using relevant keywords. Results: Early nutritional deficits are strongly associated with BPD. Higher early protein (3.5–4 g/kg/day) and energy intake (>60 kcal/kg/day in the first week, with progressive increases) reduce ventilator dependence. Lipids are essential to achieve caloric goals. Fluid restriction may reduce BPD risk but often results in undernutrition. Nutrient density, rather than fluid volume, is critical. Enteral nutrition, particularly mother’s own milk, consistently reduces BPD risk, whereas formula feeding is linked to higher BPD incidence. In established BPD, nutritional requirements are substantially increased. Feeding is frequently complicated by fluid restriction, gastroesophageal reflux, and poor oral coordination. Management strategies include higher energy intake (130–150 kcal/kg/day), adequate protein provision (3.5–4 g/kg/day), and careful use of lipid-based energy sources. Fortified human milk or enriched preterm formulas are essential, with individualized fortification improving growth. Micronutrient support is critical, and long-term follow-up is required, as post-discharge growth remains vulnerable and predicts later outcomes. Conclusions: Nutritional strategies to mitigate BPD should focus on early optimization of protein and energy intake, prioritization of nutrient density and promotion of human milk feeding. Targeted micronutrient support, individualized fortification and multidisciplinary care are essential to improve pulmonary and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive loss of motor function, which affects mobility and leads to secondary complications, including altered dietary intake due to dysphagia, fatigue, and hypermetabolism, particularly affecting vitamin consumption, which are essential micronutrients for neuromuscular performance. The specific relationship between vitamin intake and muscle activation is not well understood in patients with ALS; thus, it is relevant to identify blood biomarkers that reflect muscle status. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 61 patients with bulbar- or spinal-onset ALS. The dietary intake of B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12, folate, and niacin); vitamins C, A, D, and E; and the B6/protein ratio were assessed using a seven-day dietary record and a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Blood concentrations of butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), albumin, haptoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) were determined. Basal muscle activation was measured using surface electromyography of the biceps brachii, triceps brachii, rectus femoris, and tibialis anterior muscles. Two confirmatory predictive models were developed to evaluate the effects of muscle damage and vitamin intake on muscle strength. Results: Arm muscle activation was negatively predicted by the B6/protein ratio (β = −0.33). Leg activation was positively predicted by vitamin B9 (β = 0.39) and B6/protein (β = 0.17) and negatively predicted by vitamin A (β = −0.24). For biomarkers, albumin (β = 0.18) and PON1 (β = 0.28) positively predicted activation. For legs, albumin predicted activation (β = 0.31), whereas BuChE and haptoglobin predicted negative activation (β = −0.32 and β = −0.15, respectively). Conclusions: Weak associations were observed in patients with ALS: vitamin B9 intake showed a modest association with leg activation, the B6/protein ratio exhibited inconsistent associations across muscle groups, and vitamin A showed a negative association with leg activation. Albumin demonstrated the most consistent association as a potential biomarker of muscle function. These findings are exploratory and require validation in larger, longitudinal studies. Full article

SpuA-Mediated Glycogen Metabolism Modulates Acid Stress Adaptation via Formic Acid and Amino Acid Utilization in Streptococcus pneumoniae

Glycogen metabolism plays a key role in bacterial adaptation. In Streptococcus pneumoniae, the glycogen-degrading enzyme SpuA is widely conserved, but its physiological significance remains unclear. In this study, we investigated how SpuA affects bacterial growth and response to acid stress. We found that the spuA deletion strain (ΔspuA) produced more acidic metabolites under anaerobic conditions than the wild-type strain. In a mouse infection model, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from ΔspuA-infected mice was more acidic on day 1 post-infection, showing a lower bacterial load than wild-type infection—a finding consistent with the early growth delay observed in vitro—but the mutant later exhibited enhanced persistence at 72 h. ΔspuA strains also showed greater tolerance to formic acid and higher intake of serum amyloid A1 (SAA1), which may further contribute to their survival in acidic environments. Transcriptomic analysis revealed reduced utilization of certain amino acids, particularly cysteine, in ΔspuA strains. However, the addition of 0.05% (v/v) formic acid restored amino acid utilization in ΔspuA strains, and co-supplementation with formic acid and cysteine significantly enhanced ΔspuA growth in vitro. These findings suggest that in the absence of SpuA, S. pneumoniae shifts its metabolism toward formic acid production, which may act both as a metabolic signal and a stressor that influences bacterial gene expression. This shift is accompanied by increased expression of tRNAs and growth rescue, suggesting enhanced amino acid utilization capacity. Although our findings reveal a potential link between formic acid metabolism and amino acid utilization through tRNA regulation, further validation using metabolic flux analyses or targeted metabolomics will be required to confirm this relationship. These observations imply a metabolic adaptation that facilitates bacterial growth under low-oxygen, acidic conditions during infection. Background/Objectives: This study evaluated whether personalized nutrition (PN) advice combined with disclosure of genetic information leads to a greater reduction in caffeine consumption than PN advice alone in slow caffeine metabolizers in the short and long terms. Additionally, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) was considered for its potential to improve dietary intake assessment. Methods: In 2019–2021, 94 adults (aged 18–60 years, C allele carriers of rs762551 CYP1A2, consuming ≥ 200 mg/day caffeine), 63% of whom were women, participated in a twenty-week intervention. Participants were randomized to receive PN with genotype information (the intervention group, n = 55) or without it (the control group, n = 39). All participants were advised to limit caffeine intake to 100 mg/day. Caffeine intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and a smartphones application. After three years caffeine intake was reassessed. Results: After the intervention, caffeine consumption decreased (intervention group: 380.69 ± 217.58 to 153.73 ± 98.19 mg/day; control group: 394.44 ± 256.29 to 169.87 ± 85.70 mg/day; p < 0.01), with no group differences (p = 0.41). Three years later, a reduction (p < 0.01) was still observed in the intervention group, but the effect of time x group was insignificant. In total, 63% of the intervention group and 51% of the control group responded to at least three EMA prompts per day for at least three days. Conclusions: PN seems to affect caffeine intake in the long term. However, including genotype information in PN is no more effective than receiving PN recommendations without genetic information. EMA’s effectiveness in large-scale nutritional research may be limited due to the relatively low response rate. Full article

Background/Objectives: Previous studies show that allocating carbohydrates earlier and vegetables/protein later in late-evening meals improves glycemic control in both healthy individuals and those with type 2 diabetes. However, evidence remains insufficient regarding the effects of distributing carbohydrate intake across the day by dividing three regular meals into five smaller meals. Methods: We conducted a randomized, controlled, crossover trial to compare the effects of two dietary patterns: (1) a conventional three-meal pattern with simultaneous intake of all food components, and (2) a five-meal pattern incorporating divided carbohydrate portions and a fixed food order—vegetables first, followed by protein, and then carbohydrates. Eighteen healthy young women consumed the same test meals under both patterns. Glucose fluctuations were monitored using an intermittently continuous glucose monitoring system. Results: The five-meal pattern with food sequencing significantly improved the mean amplitude of glycemic excursions (MAGE; 2.56 ± 0.13 vs. 3.49 ± 0.32 mmol/L, p < 0.01), glucose peak, and incremental area under the glucose curve for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the time above the target glucose range [>7.8 mmol/L; 1.4 ± 0.6 vs. 4.2 ± 1.0%, p < 0.01] compared to the three-meal pattern. Conclusions: These findings suggest that divided carbohydrate intake and food order ameliorates the MAGE in healthy young women. Full article

Background/Objectives: The occurrence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) globally is rising rapidly, largely due to modifiable risk factors such as unhealthy diets. Studies have shown that poor dietary habits are prevalent among university students and may persist in later life, increasing the risk of chronic health conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diet of two different groups of university students, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and United Kingdom (UK), with the aim of identifying areas for intervention to improve overall health and wellbeing. Methods: Detailed 7-day diet diaries were collected from undergraduate university participants in the UAE and UK. Diet diaries were quantitatively assessed using Nutritics software generating reports on mean intakes for energy, macro- and micronutrients. Independent sample t-tests were utilized to compare nutrient intake between cohorts in the two different regions. Results: A total of 158 students participated in this study. Results showed significant differences in intake levels in most macronutrients and micronutrients (p ≤ 0.05). Upon comparison, UK participants consumed diets higher in sugar (+9.4 g/day), saturated fat (+4.2 g/day), cholesterol (+90 mg/day), and sodium (+307 mg/day) compared to their UAE counterparts, placing them at risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Cholesterol intake was oversufficient in both UAE and UK males by 40% and 57%, respectively. In UAE females, there were notable deficiencies in protein intake, omega 3, vitamin D, iron, iodine, and folic acid (p ≤ 0.05), placing them at risk of CVDs, anemia, diabetes, and cancer. Interestingly, both UAE males and females were 100% deficient in dietary vitamin D intake. Conclusions: Nutritional imbalances should be addressed through campus-based nutrition education programs. This study also highlights the importance of dietary guidelines targeted at specific populations accounting for cultural differences. Full article

Background: While the importance of folic acid supplementation during pregnancy in the prevention of neural tube defects in offspring is well established, its potential role in pediatric asthma development remains unclear, with limited evidence to date. Objective: To identify perinatal and environmental factors that modify the association between maternal folic acid intake and pre-adolescent asthma. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of the Healthy Growth Study that consisted of 2332 pre-adolescents (mean age 11 years; asthma n = 451); 50% boys attending elementary schools in Greece. Questionnaires were used to collect data on sociodemographic, perinatal, and environmental characteristics as well as asthma prevalence and maternal folic acid supplementation during pregnancy (trimesters 1, 2, and 3). Logistic regression models explored the association between maternal folic acid supplementation and pre-adolescent asthma, accounting for perinatal and environmental exposures. Results: Adjusted regression models showed that maternal folic acid supplementation during the third trimester was associated with 34% increased odds of pre-adolescent asthma. Stratified analyses per perinatal and environmental factors revealed significantly higher asthma odds with folic acid supplementation during the second and third trimesters among pre-adolescents born < 37 weeks; non-smoking mothers; in pre-adolescents attending schools of low socioeconomic level; and in neighborhoods having less traffic and more parks. Contrastingly, in appropriate for gestational age (AGA), an infant’s first-trimester supplementation increased asthma odds. Conclusions: Maternal folic acid supplementation, particularly in later trimesters, was modestly associated with increased odds of pre-adolescent asthma, modified by perinatal and environmental factors. Future research should explore whether continued folic acid supplementation beyond the first trimester carries differential risks or benefits in asthma. Full article

Background/Objectives: Dietary microstructure affects energy intake. Traditional Universal Eating Monitors (UEMs) offer accuracy but are limited for monitoring diverse diets. We developed the ‘Feeding Table’, a novel UEM that simultaneously tracks intake of up to 12 foods, enabling high-resolution monitoring of eating microstructure for multiple foods simultaneously. Methods: Forty-nine healthy volunteers participated: 15 (10 male, 8 female) in a location preference experiment and 31 (15 male, 16 female) in a standard meal test. The location preference study involved four weekly sessions. Participants received a standardized breakfast based on individual energy needs; lunch intake was measured 3 h later with food items in pseudo-randomized positions. The standard meal test occurred over two consecutive days to assess the Feeding Table’s performance in monitoring eating behavior under standardized conditions. Results: In two consecutive days of standard meal tests, the Feeding Table showed reasonable day-to-day repeatability for energy and macronutrient intake (energy: r = 0.82; fat: r = 0.86; carbohydrate: r = 0.86; protein: r = 0.58). Among the four repeated intake measurements, the results demonstrated high intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs: energy 0.94, protein 0.90, fat 0.90, and carbohydrate 0.93). No significant positional bias was observed (energy: p = 0.07; macronutrients: p = 0.70). Conclusions: The Feeding Table maintains UEM accuracy while enabling multi-food, real-time monitoring of dietary microstructure and food choice, offering enhanced precision for studying eating behaviors.
