The dispersion behavior of ceramic particles in aluminum alloys during rapid solidification critically affects the resulting microstructure and mechanical performance. In this study, we investigated the nucleation and growth of Al3(Sc,Zr) on TiB2 surfaces in a 2TiB2/Al–8Ni–0.6Sc–0.1Zr alloy, fabricated via wedge-shaped copper mold casting and laser surface remelting. Thermodynamic calculations were employed to optimize alloy composition, ensuring sufficient nucleation driving force under rapid solidification conditions. The results show that the formation of Al3(Sc,Zr)/TiB2 composite interfaces is highly dependent on cooling rate and plays a pivotal role in promoting uniform TiB2 dispersion. At an optimal cooling rate (~1200 °C/s), Al3(Sc,Zr) nucleates heterogeneously on TiB2, forming core–shell structures and enhancing particle engulfment into the α-Al matrix. Orientation relationship analysis reveals a preferred (111)α-Al//(0001)TiB2 alignment in Sc/Zr-containing samples. A classical nucleation model quantitatively explains the observed trends and reveals the critical cooling-rate window for composite interface formation. This work provides a mechanistic foundation for designing high-performance aluminum-based composites with uniformly dispersed reinforcements for additive manufacturing applications. Full article

In this study, a novel direct laser beam turning (DLBT) approach is proposed for the precision machining of AISI 308L austenitic stainless steel, which eliminates the need for cutting tools and thereby eradicates tool wear and vibration-induced surface irregularities. A nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG fiber laser (λ = 1064 nm, spot size = 0.05 mm) was used, and Ø1.6 mm × 20 mm cylindrical rods were processed under ambient conditions without auxiliary cooling. The experimental framework systematically evaluated the influence of scanning speed, pulse frequency, and the number of laser passes on dimensional accuracy and material removal efficiency. The results indicate that a maximum diameter reduction of 0.271 mm was achieved at a scanning speed of 3200 mm/s and 50 kHz, whereas 0.195 mm was attained at 6400 mm/s and 200 kHz. A robust second-order polynomial correlation (R2 = 0.99) was established between diameter reduction and the number of passes, revealing the high predictability of the process. Crucially, when the scanning speed was doubled, the effective fluence was halved, considerably influencing the ablation characteristics. Despite the low fluence, evidence of material evaporation at elevated frequencies due to the incubation effect underscores the complex photothermal dynamics governing the process. This work constitutes the first comprehensive quantification of pass-dependent diameter modulation in DLBT and introduces a transformative, noncontact micromachining strategy for hard-to-machine alloys. The demonstrated precision, repeatability, and thermal control position DLBT as a promising candidate for next-generation manufacturing of high-performance miniaturized components. Full article

This study proposes a laser texturing method to optimize adhesion and minimize residual stresses in CVD diamond films deposited on tungsten carbide (WC-Co). WC-5.8 wt% Co substrates were textured with quadrangular pyramidal patterns (35 µm) using a 1064 nm nanosecond-pulsed laser, followed by chemical treatment (Murakami’s solution + aqua regia) to remove surface cobalt. Diamond films were grown via HFCVD and characterized by Raman spectroscopy, EDS, and Rockwell indentation. The results demonstrate that pyramidal texturing increased the surface area by a factor of 58, promoting effective mechanical interlocking and reducing compressive stresses to −1.4 GPa. Indentation tests revealed suppression of interfacial cracks, with propagation paths deflected toward textured regions. The pyramidal geometry exhibited superior cutting post-deposition cooling time for stress relief from 3 to 1 h. These findings highlight the potential of laser texturing for high-performance machining tool applications. Full article

As manufacturing demands for challenging-to-machine metallic materials continue to evolve, the performance of cutting tools has emerged as a critical limiting factor. The synergistic application of micro-texture and coating in cutting tools can improve various properties. For the processing of existing micro-texture, because of the fast cooling and heating processing method of laser, there are defects such as remelted layer stacking and micro-cracks on the surface after processing. This study introduces a preheating-assisted technology aimed at optimizing the milling performance of textured coated tools. A milling test platform was established to evaluate the performance of these tools on titanium alloys under thermally assisted conditions. The face-centered cubic response surface methodology, as part of the central composite design (CCD) experimental framework, was employed to investigate the interaction effects of micro-texture preparation parameters and thermal assistance temperature on milling performance. The findings indicate a significant correlation between thermal assistance temperature and tool milling performance, suggesting that an appropriately selected thermal assistance temperature can enhance both the milling efficiency of the tool and the surface quality of the titanium alloy. Utilizing the response surface methodology, a multi-objective optimization of the textured coating tool-preparation process was conducted, resulting in the following optimized parameters: laser power of 45 W, scanning speed of 1576 mm/s, the number of scans was 7, micro-texture spacing of 130 μm, micro-texture diameter of 30 μm, and a heat-assisted temperature of 675.15 K. Finally, the experimental platform of optimization results is built, which proves that the optimization results are accurate and reliable, and provides theoretical basis and technical support for the preparation process of textured coating tools. It is of great significance to realize high-precision and high-quality machining of difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium alloy. Full article

The continuous casting of Ti-Nb microalloyed steel was simulated with high temperature confocal laser scanning microscopy (HTCLSM). Evolution of the sample surface morphology was observed in-situ, during cooling conditions chosen to represent different locations in a cast slab. Calculations with a thermodynamics model of carbonitride precipitate formation agreed with the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis that fine reliefs observed on the sample surface were actually caused by interior precipitation of (Ti,Nb)(C,N). Precipitation and the resulting reliefs changed with location beneath the slab surface, simulated casting speed, and steel composition. With the same casting speed and steel composition, reliefs in the simulated slab surface sample appeared earlier and were larger than in the slab center. With increased casting speed, reliefs were observed later and decreased in size. With increased titanium or niobium content, reliefs appeared earlier and increased in number. TEM measurement showed that the precipitate diameters were mainly smaller than 4 nm, with a few between 4 and 8 nm. The property of surface reliefs observed via HTCLSM correlated qualitatively with the number and size of internal precipitates measured with TEM, showing this to be an effective tool for indirectly characterizing nanoscale secondary phase precipitation inside the sample. The Erentaolegai silver deposit is located within the Derbugan metallogenic belt in the eastern segment of the Central Asia–Mongolia giant orogenic belt. The ore bodies are primarily hosted in the volcanic rocks of the Middle Jurassic Tamulangou Formation of the Mesozoic. The mineralization process of the deposit is divided into three stages: Stage I: Pyrite–Quartz Stage; Stage II: Sulfide–Quartz Stage; Stage III: Quartz–Manganese Carbonate Stage. This paper discusses the ore-forming fluids, ore-forming materials, and deposit genesis of the Erentaolegai silver deposits using fluid inclusions microthermometry, laser Raman spectroscopy, and H-O-S isotope analyses. Fluid inclusion microthermometry and laser Raman spectroscopy analyses indicate that the Erentaolegai silver deposit contains exclusively fluid-rich two-phase fluid inclusions, all of which belong to the H2O-NaCl system. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in the three stages (from early to late) ranged from 257 to 311 °C, 228 to 280 °C, and 194 to 238 °C, corresponding to salinities of 1.91 to 7.86 wt%, 2.07 to 5.41 wt%, and 0.70–3.55 wt% NaCl equivalent, densities of 0.75 to 0.83 g/cm−3, 0.80 to 0.86 g/cm−3 and 0.85 to 0.89 g/cm−3. The mineralization pressure ranged from 12.2 to 29.5 MPa, and the mineralization depth was 0.41 to 0.98 km, indicating low-pressure and shallow-depth mineralization conditions. H-O isotope results indicate that the ore-forming fluid is a mixture of magmatic fluids and meteoric water, with meteoric contribution dominating in the late stage. The δ34S values of metallic sulfides ranged from −1.8 to +4.0‰, indicating that the metallogenic material of the Erentaolegai silver deposit was dominated by a deep magmatic source. This study concludes that meteoric water mixing and subsequent fluid cooling served as the primary mechanism for silver mineral precipitation. The Erentaolegai silver deposit is classified as a low-sulfidation epithermal silver deposit. Full article

This study focuses on S32654 super austenitic stainless steel (SASS) and systematically characterizes the morphology of the sigma (σ) phase and the segregation behavior of alloying elements in its as-cast microstructure. High-temperature confocal scanning laser microscopy (HT-CSLM) was employed to investigate the effect of the rare earth element yttrium (Y) on the solidification microstructure and σ phase precipitation behavior of SASS. The results show that the microstructure of SASS consists of austenite dendrites and interdendritic eutectoid structures. The eutectoid structures mainly comprise the σ phase and the γ2 phase, exhibiting lamellar or honeycomb-like morphologies. Regarding elemental distribution, molybdenum displays a “concave” distribution pattern within the dendrites, with lower concentrations at the center and higher concentrations at the sides; when Mo locally exceeds beyond a certain threshold, it easily induces the formation of eutectoid structures. Mo is the most significant segregating element, with a segregation ratio as high as 1.69. The formation mechanism of the σ phase is attributed to the solid-state phase transformation of austenite (γ → γ2 + σ). In the late stages of solidification, the concentration of chromium and Mo in the residual liquid phase increases, and due to insufficient diffusion, there are significant compositional differences between the interdendritic regions and the matrix. The enriched Cr and Mo cause the interdendritic austenite to become supersaturated, leading to solid-state phase transformation during subsequent cooling, thereby promoting σ phase precipitation. The overall phase transformation process can be summarized as L → L + γ → γ → γ + γ2 + σ. Y microalloying has a significant influence on the solidification process. The addition of Y increases the nucleation temperature of austenite, raises nucleation density, and refines the solidification microstructure. However, Y addition also leads to an increased amount of eutectoid structures. This is primarily because Y broadens the solidification temperature range of the alloy and prolongs grain growth perio, which aggravates the microsegregation of elements such as Cr and Mo. Moreover, Y raises the initial precipitation temperature of the σ phase and enhances atomic diffusion during solidification, further promoting σ phase precipitation during the subsequent eutectoid transformation. Fabrication of Micro-Holes with High Aspect Ratios in Cf/SiC Composites Using Coaxial Waterjet-Assisted Nanosecond Laser Drilling

In the present study, the coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling of micro-holes in Cf/SiC composites, coupled with nanosecond laser drilling in air for fabricating micro-holes with high aspect ratios, were investigated. The surface morphology, reaction products, and micro-hole shapes were thoroughly examined. The results reveal that, for the coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling of micro-holes in the Cf/SiC composite, the increasing of waterjet velocity enhances the material removal rate and micro-hole depth, but reduces the micro-hole diameter and taper angle. The coaxial waterjet isolates the laser-ablated region and cools down the corresponding region rapidly, leading to the formation of a mixture of SiC, SiO2, and Si on the surface. As the coaxial waterjet velocity increases, the morphology of residual surface products changes from a net-like structure to individual spheres. Coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling, with a waterjet velocity of 9.61 m/s, achieves micro-holes with a good balance between efficiency and quality. For the fabrication of micro-holes with a high aspect ratio in Cf/SiC composites, micro-holes fabricated by nanosecond laser drilling in air exhibit obvious taper features, which should be ascribed to the combined effects of spattering slag, plasma, and energy dissipation. The application of coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling on micro-holes fabricated by laser drilling in air effectively expands the hole diameter. The fabricated micro-holes have very small taper angles, with clean wall surfaces and almost no reaction products. This approach, combining nanosecond laser drilling in air followed by coaxial waterjet-assisted nanosecond laser drilling, offers a promising technique for fabricating high-quality micro-holes with high aspect ratios in Cf/SiC composites. Thermomechanical processing has a significant impact on the porosity and mechanical properties of AISI 316L stainless steel produced by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). This work evaluated the effect of three heat treatment conditions: as-built (HT0), annealed at 650 °C for 3 h with air cooling (HT1), and annealed at 1050 °C for 1 h followed by water quenching (HT2), combined with cold and hot rolling at different strain levels. The most pronounced improvement was observed after 20% hot rolling followed by water quenching (HR + WQ), which reduced porosity to 0.05% and yielded the most spherical pores, with a circularity factor (fcircle) of 0.90 and an aspect ratio (AsR) of 1.57. At elevated temperatures, the matrix becomes more pliable, which promotes pore closure and helps reduce stress concentrations. On the other hand, applying heat treatment without causing deformation resulted in the pores growing and increasing porosity in the build direction. The fractography supported these findings, showing a transition from brittle to more ductile fracture surfaces. Heat treatment combined with plastic deformation effectively reduced internal defects and improved both structural integrity and strength. Full article

The unique structures and properties of natural organisms provide abundant inspiration for surface modification research in materials science. In this paper, the tribological advantages of radial ribs found on shell surfaces were combined with laser cladding to address challenges in material surface strengthening. Laser cladding technology was used to fabricate bionic units on the surface of 20CrMnTi steel. The alloy powder consisted of a Ni-based alloy with added WC particles. The influence of laser power (1.0 kW–3.0 kW) on the dimensions, microstructure, hardness, surface roughness, and tribological properties of the bionic units was investigated to enhance the tribological performance of the Ni60/WC bionic unit. The microstructure, phase composition, hardness, and tribological behavior of the bionic units were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a microhardness tester, and a wear tester. Experimental results show that the dimensions of the bionic units increased with laser power. However, beyond a certain threshold, the growth rate of the width and height gradually slowed due to heat conduction and edge cooling effects. The microstructure primarily consisted of equiaxed and dendritic crystals, with grain refinement observed at higher laser powers. The addition of WC resulted in average hardness values of 791 HV0.2, 819 HV0.2, 835 HV0.2, and 848 HV0.2 across the samples. This enhancement in hardness was attributed to dispersion strengthening and grain refinement. Increasing the laser power also reduced the surface roughness of the bionic units, though excessively high laser power led to a roughness increase. The presence of WC altered the wear mechanism of the bionic units. Compared to the wear observed in the N60 sample, the wear amount of the WC-containing samples decreased by 73.7%, 142.1%, 157.5%, and 263.1%, respectively. Hard WC particles played a decisive role in enhancing tribological performance of the bionic unit. Full article

Laser cladding, a cutting-edge surface modification technique for metals, offers a novel approach to enhancing the wear and corrosion resistance of substrates due to its rapid heating and cooling capabilities, precise control over coating thickness and dilution rates, and non-contact processing characteristics. However, disparities in the physical properties between the coating material and the substrate, coupled with the improper utilization of process parameters, can lead to coating defects, thereby compromising the quality of the coating. This paper examines the effects of material systems and process parameters on laser cladding composite coatings and shows that cracking is mainly caused by thermal and residual stresses. This article summarizes the methods for crack improvement and prevention in five aspects: the selection of processes in the preparation stage, the application of auxiliary fields in the cladding process, heat treatment technology, the use of auxiliary software, and the search for new processes and new structural materials. Finally, the future development trends of laser cladding technology are presented. Full article

The Polish Free-Electron Laser (PolFEL), which is currently under construction in the National Centre for Nuclear Research in Świerk near Warsaw, will comprise an electron gun and from four to six cryomodules, each accommodating two nine-cell TESLA RF superconducting resonant cavities. To cool the superconducting resonant cavities, the cryomodules will be supplied with superfluid helium at a temperature of 2 K. Other requirements regarding the cooling power of PolFEL result from the need to cool the power couplers for the accelerating cryomodules (5 K) and thermal shields, which limit the heat inleaks due to radiation (40–80 K). The machine will utilize several thermodynamic states of helium, including two-phase superfluid helium, supercritical helium, and low-pressure helium vapours. Supercritical helium will be supplied from a cryoplant by a cryogenic distribution system (CDS)—transfer line and valve boxes—where it will be thermodynamically transformed into a superfluid state. This article presents the architecture of the CDS, discusses several design solutions that could have been decided on with the use of second law analysis, and presents the design methodology of the chosen CDS elements. Given the exceptional capabilities of femtosecond laser processing in achieving high-precision ablation for air-film cooling hole fabrication on turbine blades, it is imperative to develop an advanced monitoring methodology that enables real-time feedback control to automatically terminate the laser upon complete penetration detection, thereby effectively preventing backside damage. To tackle this issue, a spectrum-domain coherent imaging technique has been developed. This innovative approach adapts the fundamental principle of fiber-based Michelson interferometry by integrating the air-film hole into a sample arm configuration. A broadband super-luminescent diode with a 830 nm central wavelength and a 26 nm spectral bandwidth serves as the coherence-optimized illumination source. An optimal normalized reflectivity of 0.2 is established to maintain stable interference fringe visibility throughout the drilling process. The system achieves a depth resolution of 11.7 μm through Fourier transform analysis of dynamic interference patterns. With customized optical path design specifically engineered for through-hole-drilling applications, the technique demonstrates exceptional sensitivity, maintaining detection capability even under ultralow reflectivity conditions (0.001%) at the hole bottom. Plasma generation during laser processing is investigated, with plasma density measurements providing optical thickness data for real-time compensation of depth measurement deviations. The demonstrated system represents an advancement in non-destructive in-process monitoring for high-precision laser machining applications. Full article

Er:YAG Laser Applications for Debonding Different Ceramic Restorations: An In Vitro Study

Background and Objectives: Conventional methods for removing cemented fixed prosthetic restorations (FPRs) are unreliable and lead to unsatisfactory outcomes. At their best, they allow the tooth to be saved at the expense of a laborious process that also wears down rotating tools and handpieces and occasionally results in abutment fractures. Restorations are nearly never reusable in any of these situations. Erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium-chromium yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) lasers casafely and effectively remove FPRs, according to scientific studiesre. This study sets out to examine the impact of Er:YAG laser radiation on the debonding of different ceramic restorations, comparing the behavior of various ceramic prosthetic restoration types under laser radiation action and evaluating the integrity of prosthetic restorations and dental surfaces exposed to laser radiation. Materials and Methods: The study included a total of 16 removed teeth, each prepared on opposite surfaces as abutments.y. Based on the previously defined groups, four types of ceramic restorations were included in the study: feldspathic (F), lithium disilicates (LD), layered zirconia (LZ), and monolithic zirconia (MZ). The thickness of the prosthetic restorations was measured at three points, and two different materials were used for cementation. The Er:YAG Fotona StarWalker MaQX laser was used to debond the ceramic FPR at a distance of 10 mm using an R14 sapphire tip with 275 mJ, 20 Hz, 5.5 W, with air cooling (setting 1 of 9) and water. After debonding, the debonded surface was visualized under electron microscopy. Results: A total of 23 ceramic FPRs were debonded, of which 12 were intact and the others fractured into two or three pieces. The electron microscopy images showed that debonding took place without causing any harm to the tooth structure. The various restoration types had the following success rates: 100% for the LZ and F groups, 87% for the LD group, and 0% for the MZ group. In terms of cement type, debonding ceramic FPRs cemented with RELYX was successful 75% of the time, compared to Variolink DC’s 69% success rate. Conclusions: In summary, the majority of ceramic prosthetic restorations can be successfully and conservatively debonded with Er:YAG radiation. Full article

The rapid growth of the machining market and advancements in additive manufacturing (AM) present new opportunities for innovative tool designs. This preliminary study proposes a design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) approach to redesign a milling cutter head in 17-4 PH stainless steel by integrating topology optimization (TO) and internal coolant channel optimization, enabled by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). An industrial eight-insert milling cutting tool was reimagined with conformal cooling channels and a lightweight topology-optimized structure. The design process considered LPBF constraints and was iteratively refined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) to validate fluid flow and structural performance. The optimized milling head achieved approximately 10% weight reduction while improving stiffness (reducing maximum deformation under load from 160 μm to 151 μm) and providing enhanced coolant distribution to the cutting inserts. The results demonstrate that combining TO with internal channel design can yield a high-performance and lightweight milling tool that leverages the freedom of additive manufacturing. As proof of concept, this integrated CFD–FEA validation approach under DfAM guidelines highlights a promising pathway toward superior cutting tool designs for industrial applications. Full article
