Sustainable mobility is undergoing a profound transformation driven by emerging technologies, increasingly stringent government regulations, and rising societal expectations, challenging traditional mobility models and fostering the emergence of new collaborative ecosystems. Actors from diverse sectors are converging to co-create innovative solutions that support a more sustainable mobility paradigm. Given the novelty of this phenomenon, this study proposes a theory-based taxonomy of innovation ecosystem initiatives for sustainable mobility. To this end, an exploratory literature review was conducted on 760 peer-reviewed articles published over the past twenty years, linking publications on innovation ecosystems with those on sustainable mobility. Topic analysis, performed using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), identified ten key themes. These themes were then grouped into three main categories during an expert roundtable: smart transportation systems, sustainable mobility planning, and logistics optimization. Furthermore, the analysis of author networks reveals a segmented and specialized collaborative structure, characterized by strong cohesion within thematic groups but limited connectivity between them. This fragmentation reinforces thematic concentration while limiting inter-domain interactions. Overall, the proposed taxonomy offers a structured framework for better understanding and supporting the design, coordination, and orchestration of innovation ecosystems in sustainable mobility. Regional development increasingly occurs under conditions of uncertainty, complexity, and accelerating socio-economic change, creating a need for adaptive approaches that support learning and transformation. Although Living Labs have gained prominence as environments for co-creation and experimentation, their broader systemic role in regional development remains insufficiently theorized. This article addresses this gap by conceptualizing Living Labs as adaptive intermediary structures embedded within Regional Innovation Systems that facilitate social transformation in peripheral regions. The study adopts a conceptual research design based on integrative theory synthesis, combining insights from Living Lab research, Regional Innovation Systems theory, complex adaptive systems theory, and behavioural approaches to adaptation and institutional learning. The resulting framework identifies four interconnected components: external transformation pressures, Living Lab mechanisms (co-creation, experimentation, stakeholder coordination, and knowledge exchange), feedback processes (trust-building, learning, absorptive capacity, and institutional adaptation), and regional transformation outcomes. The analysis suggests that Living Labs contribute to regional resilience, innovation capacity, adaptive governance, social inclusion, and socio-economic development through feedback-driven learning and adaptation processes. Rather than functioning solely as innovation platforms, Living Labs are interpreted as adaptive intermediary structures that connect experimentation with systemic transformation. The article advances Living Lab scholarship by providing a systems-oriented framework and formulates theoretical propositions that can guide future empirical research on regional adaptation and transformation. Despite substantial AI technology investment, many firms fail to translate isolated AI applications into integrated capabilities that deliver strategic returns and drive business model changes. Grounded in service-dominant logic (SDL), this study proposes and empirically tests a theoretical framework that positions AI capability (AIC) as a key antecedent in the nomological network of business model innovation (BMI). Drawing on a three-wave, two-week-interval longitudinal survey of 193 Chinese digital-intensive firms across IT, technical services, and digital leasing industries, and employing PLS-SEM, we examine associations among focal constructs, specifically, the mediating role of customer responsiveness (CR) and the moderating effect of digital organizational culture (DOC). This design mitigates common method bias and establishes temporal causal ordering. Empirical results indicate that AIC positively relates to BMI both directly and indirectly through CR, and that DOC significantly enhances the indirect effect of AIC on BMI via CR, particularly under high levels of AI-enabled sensing and interpretation. However, causal inference is limited by the cross-sectional nature of the data and self-reported measures. This study makes three key theoretical contributions. First, we identify CR as a market-oriented mechanism linking AIC to BMI, shifting focus from prior internal efficiency-focused mechanisms to customer-centric value co-creation. Second, we extend SDL to the AI context by clarifying how DOC shapes the strategic transformation of ambiguous probabilistic AI outputs into market-oriented actions. Third, we introduce DOC as an internal boundary condition for AIC, complementing prior research on external environmental moderators. These findings provide actionable guidance for managers seeking to unlock the strategic value of AI investments. Findings reflect statistical associations rather than confirmed causal effects, and results are based on perceptual survey data from Chinese digital firms. Full article

Stroke-related upper-limb impairment is a leading cause of long-term disability, and immersive virtual reality (IVR) has emerged as a promising tool to enhance rehabilitation intensity and engagement. However, the effectiveness of IVR systems depends not only on technological features but also on how they are designed with end-user involvement. This narrative review examines co-design approaches used in the development of IVR systems for upper-limb stroke rehabilitation and evaluates how stakeholders contribute to system design and outcomes. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore, and studies involving IVR upper-limb rehabilitation with participatory, user-centered, or human-centered design were included. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies demonstrated intermediate levels of participation, with seven classified as Level 4 (Collaborate), three as Level 3 (Involve), one as Level 2 (Consult), one as Level 1 (Inform), and one as Level 5 (Co-create). Common design principles included task-specific training, gamification, personalization, adaptive difficulty, meaningful activities, and clinician involvement. Despite positive findings regarding usability, motivation, and acceptability, most studies remained at feasibility or prototype stages, with limited evidence of clinical effectiveness. Recurring barriers included technological complexity, fatigue, cognitive demands, infrastructure limitations, and challenges in clinical integration. Overall, co-design is increasingly incorporated into IVR stroke rehabilitation development. However, sustained stakeholder partnership throughout the innovation lifecycle remains uncommon. Future research should prioritize longitudinal co-design processes and rigorous clinical evaluation to support the translation of IVR systems into routine rehabilitation practice. Full article

This study investigates how community engagement and outreach programs can serve as a vehicle for knowledge co-production between higher educational institutions (HEIs) and industry in developing economies. Despite growing calls for collaboration between HEIs and industry, the existing literature remains policy-driven and largely instrumental, offering a limited understanding of how engagement practices are socially constructed, negotiated, and experienced by diverse stakeholders. There is limited qualitative research on how community voices are integrated into co-creation processes and how these interactions shape sustainable development in emerging economies. The research methodology for the study was developed using the research onion, and an interpretivist research philosophy was adopted. The study employed an inductive research approach to explore actors’ lived experiences and the meanings attached to engagement practices and collected data through in-depth interviews. Participants in the study included representatives from HEIs, industry, and community stakeholders across selected sectors of the economy, and the data were analysed thematically to capture patterns of interactions, power relations, and knowledge and exchange processes underpinning co-production. The study revealed that effective community engagement goes beyond formal partnerships to encompass building lasting relationships which are characterised by trust, mutual learning, and context adaptation. Further, the study also showed that power asymmetries, institutional pressures, and resource constraints have restricted real co-production, resulting in symbolic rather than real engagement. Nevertheless, the use of inclusive and reflective approaches has been shown to foster locally acceptable and essential innovative interventions that can improve sustainable development. The study therefore recommends embedding participatory frameworks within HEIs and industry collaborations to strengthen institutional support for inclusive engagement and to reorient policies towards community-centred knowledge systems. This study, therefore, contributes to the body of knowledge by enhancing theoretical and practical understanding of sustainable higher education–industry collaboration in developing economies by promoting an understanding of engagement as a co-production process. The Mediterranean region faces severe water scarcity exacerbated by climate change. The reuse of treated industrial wastewater for industrial processes or agricultural irrigation offers a sustainable mitigation strategy, yet its implementation is hindered by low social acceptance and institutional fragmentation. This study aims to enhance treated wastewater reuse (TWWR) uptake within the textile and pharmaceutical sectors in Türkiye and Tunisia through structured stakeholder engagement, hydrological modelling, simulation, and co-design of preferred strategies. Data were collected from regional water authorities, industries, farmers, and civil society, chosen based on their influence, interest, and capacity regarding integrated water management. A Participatory Adaptive Planning framework was applied across three co-designed workshops per site, and interviews. Data were charted using the Natural Assurance Schemes Business Canvas and a conceptual visual support framework. Stakeholders identified key barriers, including legislative gaps in Türkiye and financial capabilities and farmer reluctance in Tunisia. Through the conceptual visual support framework, holistic strategies combining TWWR, water savings, urban treated wastewater quality improvement by tertiary treatment, desalination, and Managed Aquifer Recharge were co-created, simulated and ranked. Technological innovation in wastewater treatment is insufficient without robust “social readiness”. Participatory governance effectively aligns environmental engineering solutions with societal needs, establishing a foundation for resilient and integrated water management action plans. Full article

The Circular Economy (CE) offers an alternative to the traditional “take–make–dispose” model and is increasingly important in hospitality due to the sector’s high resource consumption. This systematic review analyzes 159 studies published between 1995 and 2024, sourced from ABI, BSP, and WoS, and consolidates scattered knowledge on CE practices in hotels. It outlines five strategies for transitioning to CE: energy efficiency, renewable energy, water management, waste reduction, and carbon footprint reduction. These are supported by green procurement, local supply chains, eco-certifications, and regenerative branding, all of which help hotels fulfill stakeholder expectations and support local economies. Guest engagement—through nudges, incentives, co-creation, and digital tools for monitoring and feedback—is becoming increasingly important. The review shows that CE adoption is driven by internal factors such as leadership, staff training, culture, and resources, as well as external factors such as regulation, institutional pressure, and consumer demand for authenticity. Effective collaboration among managers, staff, suppliers, policymakers, and certifiers is essential for achieving systemic adoption. CE is moving from operational efficiency to broad innovation benefiting the environment, economy, and society, despite financial, regulatory, and behavioral challenges. Future research should prioritize establishing measurement standards, addressing scalability issues, and evaluating the global effectiveness of implementation. Full article

Background/Objectives: The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare field continues to deepen, with the development paradigm gradually shifting from technology-driven innovation to design-driven innovation towards “human-centered artificial intelligence (HCAI).” This aims to bridge the potential of AI technology with actual clinical needs and improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. However, it still faces challenges such as insufficient integration of theoretical frameworks, complex implementation challenges, and an imperfect ethical governance mechanism. Methods: This article presents a systematic narrative review about the philosophical and ethical foundations of HCAI related literature, analyzes the specific clinical application models recorded in the literature, integrates key theories related to implementation science, human–machine collaboration, and explainable AI(XAI), and constructs a multidimensional comprehensive analysis framework for HCAI in the medical field. Results: The study shows that design-driven innovation is the key to bridging the gap between the potential of AI technology and practical medical applications; the successful implementation of “human-centered artificial intelligence” relies on interdisciplinary collaboration, stakeholder co-creation, and ethical considerations throughout the entire lifecycle; Among them, human-centered design ensures that technology meets real needs; Implementation Science guarantees innovation can effectively integrate into complex medical environments; explainable AI technology is the cornerstone of establishing clinical trust; the strategic governance framework sets boundaries and tracks for the healthy development of the entire ecosystem. Conclusions: Beyond summarizing existing research findings, this study proposes targeted design frameworks and trade-off strategies for key technical and practical dilemmas of HCAI. It also clarifies the contextual boundaries of existing empirical results, provides a differentiated operational path for the implementation of HCAI, as well as a clear direction and important reference for academic research and future practical applications of human-centered AI medicine. The purpose of this research is to explore how entrepreneurs utilize their entrepreneurial mindset when incorporating activities directed towards sustainability or circularity into their small- and medium-sized enterprises. Two hypotheses are tested in the research. These are operationalized by understanding how internal and external influences affect the entrepreneurs’ perceptions and decision-making, which includes business models, innovation, customers, suppliers, products, services and processes, which can lead to sustainable value, planetary health or sustainable transitions. The methodological approach is a quantitative research method with a questionnaire sent to entrepreneurs in Swedish small- and medium-sized enterprises during the period from March 2025 to November 2025, wherein a total of 64 answers were provided. The findings show that the entrepreneurial mindset is positively related to external activities with customers and suppliers. These findings imply that external influences from customers and suppliers can support sustainability-oriented entrepreneurship. By highlighting how the entrepreneurial mindset relates to internal and external influences, the originality of the study contributes to the understanding of opportunities for small- and medium-sized enterprises to co-create value that supports sustainability, circularity and planetary health. Moreover, a positive relationship between internal influences and external influences is novel in this research and demands more attention in the future. Full article

Considering the high user engagement and collaborative content creation in the digital cultural industry, we explore how digital platform capabilities (DPCs) enable value co-creation in corporate innovation ecosystems (VCC-CIE). Drawing on dynamic capability theory and survey data from 504 employees of Chinese digital cultural enterprises, we analyze the impact of DPCs on VCC-CIE. DPCs were found to positively affect VCC-CIE, with organizational structural agility (OSA) and business model innovation (BMI) serving as mediators. Furthermore, digital business intensity (DBI) not only positively moderates the direct relationship between DPCs and VCC-CIE but also significantly moderates the mediating role of OSA, creating a moderated mediation model. This research advances our understanding of value co-creation in the digital age. Practically, it reveals that digital cultural enterprises can boost VCC-CIE by enhancing their DPCs, improving OSA, and adopting BMI. Full article

Social Innovation (SI) has emerged as a strategic paradigm for addressing systemic challenges in highly uncertain environments. However, its practice still reveals epistemological fragmentation that risks reducing SI to welfare-oriented approaches. This article presents a critical and constructive analysis aimed at mitigating the “methodological myopia” that persists in social impact assessment. Through a systematic literature review and a qualitative case study in the Antofagasta Region (Chile), the article argues that the scientific validity of SI depends on longitudinal, multidimensional, and territorially grounded evaluative frameworks. The study examines the relationship between SI and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a source of methodological rigor, improving traceability and auditability while supporting the scaling of interventions. In response to techno-utopian forms of determinism, the article proposes an ethical and participatory governance framework based on the Multi-Helix model, integrating academia, the public sector, private enterprise, and civil society in the co-creation of public value. The findings suggest that the institutionalization of SI through AI must move beyond procedural efficiency to foster structural transformation. In Antofagasta, this AI-supported certification architecture is already operational within the Regional Innovation Strategy (ERI) 2022–2028 through the executed FIC-R 2023 project on Social Innovation Certification. The Antofagasta experience is therefore presented as an illustrative case of territorial governance, offering transferable principles for other Global South contexts rather than a directly replicable model. By constructing a system dynamics (SD) model of how mission-oriented innovation consortia empower the development of future industries, this study reveals the internal causal structure and dynamic evolution mechanism of the system in the process of multi-actor collaborative innovation. The results show that, throughout the simulation period, innovation consortia exert a sustained positive enabling effect on the development of future industries, mainly reflected in the expansion of industrial market demand, the accumulation of core technology breakthroughs, and the increase in the added value of the future industrial chain. Value co-creation intensity, patent resource complementarity, and technological adaptability jointly constitute the key mechanisms through which innovation consortia empower future industries. These mechanisms are coupled through multiple feedback paths, thereby maintaining the continuous evolutionary momentum of the system. From a system dynamics perspective, this study characterizes the dynamic interaction process and nonlinear evolutionary features between innovation consortia and future industry development, enriches the relevant theoretical framework, and provides a dynamic simulation basis for policy design related to future industries. Smart city mobility is increasingly governed by a techno-solutionist logic that prizes data, automation, and efficiency, often at the expense of public trust, social legitimacy, and lived experience. This article argues that the fate of a mobility transition appears to depend less on the sophistication of the technology than on the pace and posture of change. Building on the CalmMobility framework and on Weiser and Brown’s concept of calm technology, it develops the idea of calm smart mobility—a human-paced, options-first approach in which innovation enters everyday life gradually and with credible alternatives already in place, so that residents are not asked to continuously adapt. The framework’s three pillars (Comprehensiveness; Pacing–Sequencing–Inclusion; Future-Readiness) are mapped onto four recurring challenges of smart mobility (Policy Layering, Affective Mismatch, Governance Silos, and the Future-Readiness Gap) and then used as a descriptive analytical lens to characterize seven documented implementations across economic, spatial, mass-transit, service, and platform interventions and four world regions: the Stockholm congestion charge, the London ULEZ expansion, the Barcelona superblocks, Bogotá’s TransMilenio bus rapid transit and Ciclovía, Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon restoration and bus reform, Helsinki’s Whim Mobility-as-a-Service, and Sidewalk Toronto. Presented through a comparison table, a positioning map, and adoption trajectories rather than rankings, the characterization suggests that the provision of alternatives, the sequencing and pace of change, and the genuineness of co-creation are more closely associated with smooth adoption than the type of instrument deployed. The article is conceptual and framework-building. The cases illustrate and probe the framework instead of validating it, and a testable central hypothesis is specified for future empirical work. Calm smart mobility is offered as a transferable, citizen-centred logic for guiding smart city mobility transitions at a human pace. Full article

The article frames the co-design activities developed in Phase 3 of the DeinSite project, aimed at promoting product innovation in traditional craft districts through dialogue between young designers, artisans, museums, and SMEs in Southern Italy. It introduces the DeinSite Co-Design Framework, a replicable methodological model integrating three complementary types of co-design–Open, Participatory, and Prototype-Led Co-Design–that guide the entire design process, from field research to co-creation to digital experimentation. Within this framework, the article delves into the Manus Maris workshop, focused on cameo and coral, a key sector of Campania’s productive activity. The workshop interprets the marine environment as a creative, cultural, and productive ecosystem, inspiring new narratives and formal languages that combine artisanal memory and technological innovation. Through collaborative activities, physical–digital prototyping, and an intergenerational exchange between designers and craftsmen, Manus Maris has generated experimental jewellery collections reinterpreting the local tangible and intangible heritage. The findings highlight the framework’s potential as a tool for activating systemic innovation in Southern Italy’s artisanal districts, enhancing museums as cultural and production hubs and promoting new synergies between tradition and contemporary design. The proposed model is a transferable methodology, useful for regenerating “Handmade in Italy” supply chains and constructing territorial ecosystems oriented towards innovation, sustainability, and international competitiveness. Background: Population ageing has increased the burden of geriatric syndromes among older adults with cardiovascular disease, where frailty is associated with adverse outcomes, including hospitalization, functional decline, and mortality. Digital technologies and Living Lab approaches offer new opportunities for the early detection, prevention, and monitoring of these conditions through user-centred innovation and stakeholder collaboration. Our purpose is to review the role of technology in the detection, prevention, and monitoring of geriatric syndromes in older adults with cardiovascular disease and to explore the potential of the Living Lab model for developing and implementing innovative solutions in geriatric care. Materials and Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and ScienceDirect. Eleven studies were included. Evidence on physical, cognitive, psycho-emotional, and social frailty, as well as technology-enabled assessment and monitoring approaches, was synthesized. Results: Digital technologies, including wearable sensors, telemonitoring platforms, mobile health applications, machine-learning models, and digital phenotyping tools, supported the early identification and monitoring of frailty, fall risk, cognitive decline, depressive symptoms, and functional deterioration. Technology-assisted interventions improved physical and cognitive performance and promoted social engagement. The Living Lab model facilitated the co-creation, evaluation, and validation of technologies in real-world settings, enhancing usability, acceptability, and implementation in clinical practice. Conclusions: Technology-supported assessment and monitoring can improve the management of geriatric syndromes in older adults with cardiovascular disease. Living Labs provide a valuable framework for the user-centred development and integration of these innovations, supporting personalized and proactive care strategies that promote healthy ageing.
