Phase Engineering of Cu2S via Ce2S3 Incorporation: Achieving Enhanced Thermal Stability and Mechanical Properties

Cu2S has wide-ranging applications in the energy field, particularly as electrode materials and components of energy storage devices. However, the migration of copper ions is prone to component segregation and copper precipitation, impairing long-term thermal stability and service performance. Ce2S3 not only possesses the unique 4f electron layer structure of Ce but also has high thermal stability and chemical inertness. Here, we report for the first time that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of Cu2S can be significantly enhanced by introducing the dispersed phase Ce2S3. Thermogravimetry—differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) results show that the addition of 6 wt% Ce2S3 improves the thermal stability of Cu2S sintered at 400 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the crystal structure of Cu2S gradually transforms to tetragonal Cu1.96S and orthorhombic Cu1.8S phase at 400 °C with the increase of Ce2S3 addition. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that the particle size gradually decreased with the increase of Ce2S3 amount, indicating that the Ce2S3 addition increased the reactivity. The Ce content in Cu2S increased gradually with the increase of Ce2S3 amount at 400–600 °C. The 7 wt% Ce2S3-Cu2S exhibits paramagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 1.2 µB/Ce. UV-Vis analysis indicates that the addition of Ce2S3 can reduce the optical energy gap and enrich the band structure of Cu2S. With increasing addition of Ce2S3 and rising sintering temperature, the density of Ce2S3-Cu2S gradually increases, and the hardness of Ce2S3-Cu2S increases by 52.5% at 400 °C and by 34.2% at 600 °C. The friction test results show that an appropriate addition amount of Ce2S3 can increase the friction coefficients of Cu2S. Ce2S3 modification offers a novel strategy to simultaneously enhance the structural and service stability of Cu2S by regulating Cu ion diffusion and suppressing compositional fluctuations. Foamed concrete has been widely applied in construction engineering; however, the performance requirements vary across different structural components. Its production typically involves a substantial consumption of cement, which imposes both environmental and economic burdens. Therefore, this study examined foamed concrete with dry apparent densities of 500–1000 kg/m3, in which cement was partially replaced (0–30%) by recycled powder from construction and demolition waste. Macroscopic performance was evaluated through drying shrinkage, compressive strength, softening coefficient, carbonation coefficient, and thermal conductivity, while microstructural analysis was conducted to clarify the underlying mechanisms. The results indicate that the internal composition of the recycled powder primarily consists of SiO2, CaCO3, and C-S-H gel. When recycled powder is used to replace cement, the microstructure of the resulting paste gradually deteriorates compared to that of the control group without recycled powder, and a significant amount of inert SiO2 is introduced. As the replacement ratio of recycled powder increases, the compressive strength of foamed concrete across various density grades exhibits a gradual decline. Notably, when the replacement ratio reaches 30%, the reduction in mechanical performance becomes more substantial. However, the incorporation of recycled powder can effectively mitigate the drying shrinkage of foamed concrete. Moreover, the incorporation of recycled powder exerts minimal influence on the thermal conductivity and porosity of foamed concrete, demonstrating its favorable compatibility and potential for application in foamed concrete systems. Tribological performance is critical for the longevity and efficiency of machined components in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and biomedical. This study investigates whether electrical discharge machining recast layers can serve as a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to conventional tungsten inert gas cladding coatings for enhancing surface properties. The samples were prepared using electrical discharge machining and tungsten inert gas cladding. For electrical discharge machining, various combinations of electrical and non-electrical parameters were applied using Taguchi’s L18 orthogonal array. Similarly, tungsten inert gas cladding coatings were prepared using a suitable combination of current, voltage, powder size, and speed. The samples were characterized using, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, microhardness testing, tribological testing, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and profilometry. The electrical discharge machining recast layers exhibited superior tribological performance compared to tungsten inert gas cladding coatings. This improvement is attributed to the formation of carbides, such as TiC and Ti6C3.75. The coefficient of friction and specific wear rate were reduced by 11.11% and 1.57%, respectively, while microhardness increased by 10.93%. Abrasive wear was identified as the predominant wear mechanism. This study systematically compares electrical discharge machining recast layers with tungsten inert gas cladding coatings. The findings suggest that optimized electrical discharge machining recast layers can serve as effective coatings, offering cost and time savings. Full article

In the practical physical structure of the electromagnetic inerter–spring–damper (EM–ISD) suspension, parasitic damping inevitably coexists with the mechanical inerter effect. To investigate the intrinsic influence of this parasitic effect on the suspension system’s performance, this study first establishes a quarter-vehicle dynamic model that incorporates parasitic damping, based on the actual configuration of the EM–ISD suspension. Subsequently, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to optimize the key suspension parameters, with the objective of enhancing its comprehensive performance. The optimized parameters are then utilized to systematically analyze the dynamic characteristics of the suspension under the influence of parasitic damping. The results indicate that, compared to an ideal model that neglects parasitic damping, an increase in the parasitic damping coefficient leads to a deterioration in the root mean square (RMS) value of body acceleration, while concurrently reducing the RMS values of the suspension working space and dynamic tire load. However, by incorporating parasitic damping into the design considerations during the optimization phase, its adverse impact on ride comfort can be effectively mitigated. Compared with a traditional passive suspension, the optimized EM–ISD suspension, which accounts for parasitic damping, demonstrates superior performance. Specifically, the RMS values of body acceleration and suspension working space are significantly reduced by 11.1% and 17.6%, respectively, thereby effectively improving the vehicle’s ride comfort and handling stability. To address the adverse effects of Tuned Inertia Dampers (TIDs) on track slab vibrations while controlling high-frequency rail vibrations, a hybrid Finite Element-Statistical Energy Analysis (FE-SEA) method is developed for modeling the vehicle-track-bridge coupled system. Short-wavelength track irregularities are introduced as high-frequency excitation, and the accuracy and efficiency of this method are validated by comparison with the traditional finite element method (FEM). A vibration control model for track-bridge structures incorporating TIDs is designed, and the effects of the TID’s inertance, stiffness, and damping coefficients on the vertical acceleration responses of the rail and track slab are investigated in detail. The study reveals that although TIDs effectively reduce rail vibrations, they may induce adverse effects on track slab vibrations. Using the vibration acceleration amplitudes of both the rail and track slab as dual control objectives, a multi-objective optimization model is established, and the TID’s optimal parameters are determined using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The results show that the optimized TID parameters reduce rail acceleration amplitudes by 16.43% and improve the control efficiency by 12.45%, while also addressing the negative effects on track slab vibration. The track slab’s vibration acceleration is reduced by 5.47%, and the vertical displacement and acceleration of the vehicle body are reduced by 14.22% and 47.5%, respectively, thereby enhancing passenger comfort. This study provides new insights and theoretical guidance for vibration control analysis in vehicle-track-bridge coupled systems. Full article

Hub motor-driven vehicles (HMDVs) suffer from poor handling and stability due to an increased unsprung mass and unbalanced radial electromagnetic forces. Although traditional ground-hook control reduces the dynamic tire load, it severely worsens the body acceleration. This paper presents a generalized ground-hook control strategy based on impedance transfer functions to address the parameter redundancy in structural methods. A quarter-vehicle model with a switched reluctance motor wheel hub drive was used to study different orders of generalized ground-hook impedance transfer function control strategies for dynamic inertial suspension. An enhanced fish swarm parameter optimization method identified the optimal solutions for different structural orders. Analyses showed that the third-order control strategy optimized the body acceleration by 2%, reduced the dynamic tire load by 8%, and decreased the suspension working space by 22%. This strategy also substantially lowered the power spectral density for the body acceleration and dynamic tire load in the low-frequency band of 1.2 Hz. Additionally, it balanced computational complexity and performance, having slightly higher complexity than lower-order methods but much less than higher-order structures, meeting real-time constraints. To address time-domain deviations from generalized ground-hook control in semi-active systems, a dynamic compensation strategy was proposed: eight topological structures were created by modifying the spring–damper structure. A deviation correction mechanism was devised based on the frequency-domain coupling characteristics between the wheel speed and suspension relative velocity. For ride comfort and road-friendliness, a dual-frequency control criterion was introduced: in the low-frequency range, energy transfer suppression and phase synchronization locking were realized by constraining the ground-hook damping coefficient or inertance coefficient, while in the high-frequency range, the inertia-dominant characteristic was enhanced, and dynamic phase adaptation was permitted to mitigate road excitations. The results show that only the T0 and T5 structures met dynamic constraints across the frequency spectrum. Time-domain simulations showed that the deviation between the T5 structure and the third-order generalized ground-hook impedance model was relatively small, outperforming traditional and T0 structures, validating the model’s superior adaptability in high-order semi-active suspension. As autogenous and thermal strains are significantly high in alkali-activated pastes, it becomes necessary to investigate ways to reduce these. This research studies how the volume changes of pastes made from slag activated by alkalis can be mitigated by substituting part of the slag with limestone filler and how this impacts the properties of the material, including autogenous strains, thermal strains, heat flow, compressive strength, and workability. The first part investigates how the different substitution rates impact the compressive strength and workability. The substitution rates of 15% and 30% emerged as the most optimal with a maximal reduction in the compressive strength of 23%. Five compositions were consequently investigated in the second part of the study. Isothermal calorimetry revealed that the limestone filler was probably not entirely inert and showed the effect of dilution, which is linked to the increase in the solution-to-binder ratio when the substitution rate increases. The autogenous shrinkage decreased when substituting 15% of the slag, while higher autogenous shrinkage was obtained when 30% was substituted. In addition, its rate of development was reduced. Finally, the coefficient of thermal expansion was generally slightly reduced and delayed when slag was substituted. Full article

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have emerged as a focal point in advanced carbon materials research due to exceptional tribological properties, including ultralow friction coefficient, exceptional wear resistance, ultrahigh hardness, and chemical inertness. Deposition of DLC coatings on metal components represents an innovative solution to enhance wear resistance in engineering applications. However, suboptimal adhesion strength between coatings and substrates, coupled with inherent material limitations, critically compromises the tribological performance. This review systematically examines recent advances in improving the wear resistance of DLC-coated metal components. First, the fundamental wear mechanisms governing both metallic substrates and DLC coatings under service conditions are elucidated. Next, three pivotal technologies, substrate material treatment/strengthening, coating structure design, and elemental doping, all demonstrating significant efficacy in wear resistance enhancement, are critically analyzed. Furthermore, a comparative assessment of these techniques reveals the synergistic potential in hybrid approaches. Finally, a concise summary of the outlook is presented. Full article

h-BN spherical nanoparticles, known as white graphene, have good anti-wear properties, long service life, chemical inertness, and stability, which provide superior lubricating performance as a solid additive item to nanofluids. However, the poor dispersion stability of h-BN nanoparticles in nanofluids is a bottleneck that restricts their application. Currently, to prepare h-BN nanofluids with good dispersion stability, a cold plasma (CP) modification of h-BN nanoparticles is proposed in this study. In this research, h-BN nanofluid with added surfactant (SNL), CP-modified h-BN nanofluid with N2 as the working gas (CP(N2)NL), and CP-modified h-BN nanofluid with O2 as the working gas (CP(O2)NL) were prepared, separately. The mechanism of the dispersion stability of CP-modified h-BN nanofluid was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the performance of CP-modified nanofluid was analyzed based on static observation of nanofluid, kinematic viscosity, and heat transfer properties. Finally, friction and wear experiments were conducted to further analyze the tribological performance of h-BN nanofluids based on the coefficient of friction, 3D surface morphology, surface roughness (Sa), scratches, and micro-morphology. The results show that CP-modified h-BN nanofluid has excellent dispersed suspension stability and can be statically placed for more than 336 h. The CP-modified h-BN nanofluid showed stable friction-reducing, anti-wear, and heat transfer performance, in which the coefficient of friction of h-BN nanofluid was about 0.66 before and after 24 h of settling. The Sa value of the sample was reduced by 31.6–49.2% in comparison with pure cottonseed oil (CO). Full article

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is a widespread welding process used in the industry for high-quality joints. However, this welding process suffers from lower productivity. Activated Tungsten Inert Gas (ATIG) is a variant of the TIG that aims to increase the depth penetration capability of conventional TIG welding. This is achieved by applying a thin coating of activating flux material onto the workpiece surface before welding. This work investigates the effect of the thermophysical properties of individual metallic oxide fluxes on 316L stainless steel weld morphology. Four levels of current intensity (120, 150, 180, 200 A) are considered. The weld speed up to 15 cm/min and arc length of 2 mm are maintained constant. Thirteen oxides were tested under various levels of current intensity in addition to multiple thermophysical properties combinations, and the depth penetration (D) and the aspect ratio (R) were recorded. This process has provided 52 combinations (13 oxides * 4 currents). Based on the numerical observations, linear and nonlinear models for describing the effect of the thermophysical parameters on the weld characteristics were tuned using a particle swarm optimization algorithm. While the linear model provided good prediction accuracy, the nonlinear exponential model outperformed the linear one for the depth yielding a mean absolute percentage error of 17%, a coefficient of determination of 0.8266, and a root mean square error of 0.9665 mm. The inverse optimization process, where the depth penetration ranged from 1.5 mm to 12 mm, thus covering a large spectrum of industries, the automotive, power plants, and construction industries, was solved to determine the envelopes’ lower and upper limits of optimal oxide thermophysical properties. The results that allowed the design of the fluxes to be used in advance were promising since they provided the oxide designer with the numerical ranges of the oxide components to achieve the targeted depths. Future directions of this work can be built around investigating additional nonlinear models, including saturation and dead-zone, to efficiently estimate the effect of the thermophysical properties on the welding process of other materials. The tribological behavior of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) coatings was systematically investigated under various controlled gas environments in a vacuum chamber. A hemispherical steel pin was slid cyclically over a MoS2-coated steel disk, prepared via high-speed powder spraying. The study measured both dynamic and static friction coefficients under different gaseous atmospheres, including high vacuum, helium, argon, dry air, and water vapor. In high vacuum (10−5 Pa), an ultra-low dynamic friction coefficient (µ ≈ 0.01) was observed, while increasing values were recorded with helium (µ ≈ 0.03), argon (µ ≈ 0.04), dry air (µ ≈ 0.17), and water vapor (µ ≈ 0.30). Static friction coefficients followed a similar trend, decreasing significantly upon evacuation of water vapor or injection of inert gases. Surface analyses revealed that friction in vacuum or inert gases promoted smooth wear tracks and basal plane alignment of MoS2 crystallites, while exposure to water vapor led to rougher, more disordered wear surfaces. Mass spectrometry and energetic modeling of physisorption interactions provided further insights into gas–solid interfacial mechanisms. These results demonstrate that the tribological performance of MoS2 coatings is highly sensitive to the surrounding gas environment, with inert and vacuum conditions favoring low friction through enhanced basal plane orientation and minimal gas–surface interactions. In contrast, water vapor disrupts this structure, increasing friction and surface degradation. Understanding these interactions is crucial for optimizing MoS2-based lubrication systems in varying atmospheric or sealed environments. Full article

Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) mixtures often face challenges in the fresh state, which are typically addressed using high Portland cement (PC) content or chemical admixtures, obstructing sustainability efforts in the construction industry. Therefore, this study employs advanced mixed design techniques, specifically particle packing models (PPMs), to proportion eco-efficient FRC mixtures with reduced cement content (<300 kg/m3) while achieving desirable fresh and hardened state properties. Twelve low-cement (LC) FRC mixtures, containing limestone filler (LF) as an inert material and a partial replacement for PC, were designed with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.64, incorporating two fiber types (polypropylene and steel) at varying contents (0.5% and 1.0% by volume) and lengths (38 mm and 50 mm). PPM-designed mixtures used two coefficients of distribution (q-factors: 0.21 and 0.26) and were evaluated for fresh (VeBe time, slump, and rheology) and hardened (compressive strength and flexural performance) state properties. Results show that PPM-designed FRC mixtures achieved up to 70% higher compressive strength and up to 64% greater flexural capacity compared to conventional mixes (i.e., American Concrete Institute—ACI), despite using 20% less cement. Additionally, PPM mixtures exhibited higher VeBe times (up to 24 s) and yield stress, reflecting improved packing density, while demonstrating shear-thinning behavior for practical applications (i.e., pumped or vibrated concrete). Finally, the findings demonstrate that PPMs enable the development of eco-efficient, low-cement FRC mixtures with similar or improved hardened state performance and reduced environmental impact. The paper focuses on material characterization and technology properties of a new Ti-12Al-42Nb spherical powder alloy for additive manufacturing of personal medical implants. The electrode induction melting inert gas atomization (EIGA) method was used to produce the powder alloy. The powder sphericity coefficient (PSC) was 1.02. Image J software was used to calculate the spherical degree by processing images sets from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM). SEM of particles cross-sections indicated internal thermal-induced porosity (TIP) with a 2.3 μm pore diameter. Particle size distribution was in the range from 15.72 μm (d10) to 64.48 μm (d100) as measured by laser particle analyzer. It was indicated that flowability and powder bulk density were 196 sec and 2.79 g/cm3, respectively. XRD analysis confirmed the beta phase of the powder alloy with no additional phases. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry confirmed the alloyed composition. Reducing and oxidative melting methods of analysis showed a slight amount of impurities: oxygen (0.0087 wt.%), nitrogen (0.03 wt.%), hydrogen (0.0012 wt.%), sulfur (0.0016 wt.%), and carbon (0.022 wt.%). Simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) was performed to indicate weight growth and losses and thermal effects in argon, nitrogen, and air as well as the oxidation of Al2O3, TiO2, and Nb2O5 on the surface layer of Ti-12Al-42Nb powder alloy particles. Different phase transformations of γAl2O3  θAl2O3  αAl2O3 and TiO2 rutile TiO2 anatase phase transformation were detected by STA in the oxidative layer. Full article

Inerter dampers are effectively employed to mitigate and dampen structural vibrations in slender or high-rise buildings. The simple viscous inerter damper, with a viscous dashpot placed in series with an inerter, is designed to create resonant vibration damping, although the damper itself is without an internal resonance. The apparent resonant behavior is instead obtained by increasing the damper inertance until the two lowest modes of the considered building model interact, whereafter the viscous coefficient is adjusted until the desired response mitigation is achieved. The present modal interaction tuning requires that the reduced-order single-mode dynamic model of the building includes both inertia and flexibility from the (other) modes otherwise discarded by the model reduction. While the inertia correction adjusts the modal mass of the inerter damper, the corresponding flexibility introduces the apparent damper stiffness that creates the desired damper resonance. Thus, the accurate representation of other modes is essential for the design and resonant tuning of the simple viscous inerter damper. The resonant damper performance by the non-resonant viscous inerter damper is illustrated by a numerical example with a 20-story building model, for which the desired resonant modal interaction requires an inertance of almost ten times the entire translational building mass. This study utilized passive acoustic emissions from a fluidized bed containing spherical inert ABS particles, captured by an external piezoelectric microphone, to monitor fluidization agitation intensity. Acoustic signals were recorded during fluidization profiles achieved under air velocities ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 m/s and during the drying of water or maltodextrin aqueous solution (1:5 w/w) introduced as droplets. Analyzing audio features like waveforms, the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) revealed changes corresponding to the agitation intensity of the particles. The MFCC coefficients were input into a three-layer artificial neural network (ANN) to predict fluidization dynamics based on air velocity, liquid flow rate, and drying time. The ANN efficiently learned from the data, achieving high predictive accuracy (R2 > 0.8) after 15 epochs of training, showcasing the robustness of MFCC coefficients for modeling. This approach highlights that the application of passive acoustic signals and neural networks allows for real-time monitoring of fluidization behavior during drying processes. Full article
