To mitigate persistent urban–rural disparities and facilitate comprehensive rural development, the Chinese government institutionalized the Rural Revitalization Strategy. This national policy framework systematically addresses five critical domains of rural development: (1) industrial revitalization, (2) talent revitalization, (3) organizational capacity building, (4) cultural heritage preservation, and (5) ecological conservation. Among them, talent cultivation serves as both a fundamental objective and critical resource for the sustainable rural economic transformation. However, the existing research and practice have disproportionately emphasized industrial and ecological aspects, largely neglecting the acute talent shortage. This study bridges this gap by adopting a population mobility lens to categorize young talent types contributing to Chinese rural economic transformation and analyze their mobility trajectories and resource exchange dynamics. Drawing on an integrated theoretical framework combining Push–Pull Theory and Existence–Relatedness–Growth Theory, as well as empirical evidences from Yuan Village in Shaanxi Province, this research has four key findings. First, there are three distinct young talent categories that have emerged in Chinese rural economic transformation: urban-to-rural young talents, native young talents, and rural-to-rural young talents. It is noteworthy that the rural-to-rural young talent represents a novel flow pattern that can expand our conventional understandings of Chinese population mobility. Second, differential push–pull factors shape each category’s migration decisions, subsequently influenced by their existence needs, social relatedness, and growth requirements as outlined in ERG Theory. Third, through heterogeneous resource exchanges with villagers, committees, and communities, these talents negotiate their positions and satisfy their expectations within the rural socio-economic system. Fourth, unmet exchange expectations may precipitate talent outflow, which will further pose sustainability challenges to revitalization efforts. Additionally, the long-term impacts of the intensified social interactions between talent groups and local residents, as well as their generalizability, require further examination. Full article

Industrial building renovation is a sustainable strategy to preserve urban heritage while meeting modern needs. However, how interior material scenes affect users’ emotions, thermal perception, and functional preferences remains underexplored in adaptive reuse contexts. This study used virtual reality (VR) to examine four common material scenes—wood, concrete, red brick, and white-painted surfaces—within industrial renovation settings. A total of 159 participants experienced four Lumion-rendered VR environments and rated them on thermal perception (visual warmth, thermal sensation, comfort), emotional response (arousal, pleasure, restoration), and functional preference. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlation. Wood and red brick scenes were associated with warm visuals; wood scenes received the highest ratings for thermal comfort and pleasure, white-painted scenes for restoration and arousal, and concrete scenes, the lowest scores overall. Functional preferences varied by space: white-painted and concrete scenes were most preferred in study/work settings, wood in social spaces, wood and red brick in rest areas, and concrete in exhibition spaces. By isolating material variables in VR, this study offers a novel empirical approach and practical guidance for material selection in adaptive reuse to enhance user comfort, emotional well-being, and spatial functionality in industrial heritage renovations. Traditional type I sourdoughs are being rediscovered and increasingly used in artisanal and industrial bakeries due to the unique taste and texture, potential health benefits, and longer shelf life they confer on to baked products. These unique properties are attributed to the diverse microbial communities of sourdough, comprising both yeasts and bacteria. The traditional preservation method for type I sourdough (i.e., continuous backslopping) may lead, over time, to taxonomic and functional rearrangements of its microbial communities. Consequently, significant deviations in the characteristics of baked products can occur. In this context, this review aims to summarize the recent literature on the long-term preservation and maintenance strategies for type I sourdough and highlight the essential role that microbial biological resource centers (mBRCs) could play in the preservation and sharing of sourdough microbiomes. Specifically, the identification of appropriate preservation methods, implementation of well-defined access and benefit-sharing protocols, and development of microbiome-specific datasets, should be encouraged within the context of mBRCs. These infrastructures are expected to play a pivotal role in preserving the microbiota of fermented foods, serving as a crucial element for innovation and the safeguarding of traditional foods and culinary heritage. Masonry industrial buildings, common in the 19th and 20th centuries, represent a significant architectural typology. These structures are crucial to the study of industrial archeology, which focuses on preserving and revitalizing historical industrial heritage. Often left neglected and deteriorating, they hold great potential for adaptive reuse, transforming into vibrant cultural, commercial, or residential spaces through well-planned restoration and consolidation efforts. This paper explores a case study of such industrial architecture: a decommissioned factory near Naples. The complex consists of multiple structures with vertical supports made of yellow tuff stone and roofs framed by wooden trusses. To improve the building’s seismic resilience, a comprehensive analysis was conducted, encompassing its historical, geometric, and structural characteristics. Using advanced computer software, the factory was modelled with a macro-element approach, allowing for a detailed assessment of its seismic vulnerability. This approach facilitated both a global analysis of the building’s overall behaviour and the identification of potential local collapse mechanisms. Non-linear analyses revealed a critical lack of seismic safety, particularly in the Y direction, with significant out-of-plane collapse risk due to weak connections among walls. Based on these findings, a restoration and consolidation plan was developed to enhance the structural integrity of the building and to ensure its long-term safety and functionality. This plan incorporated metal tie rods, masonry strengthening through injections, and roof reconstruction. The proposed interventions not only address immediate seismic risks but also contribute to the broader goal of preserving this industrial architectural heritage. This study introduces a novel multidisciplinary methodology—integrating seismic analysis, traditional retrofit techniques, and sustainable reuse—specifically tailored to the rarely addressed typology of masonry industrial structures. By transforming the factory into a functional urban space, the project presents a replicable model for preserving industrial heritage within contemporary cityscapes. Full article

Urban expansion in coastal areas involves infrastructure development, industrial growth, and mining activities. These coastal environments face various environmental and geological hazards that require geo-engineers to devise solutions. An integrated geophysical approach aims to address such complex challenges as sea level rise, sea water intrusion, shoreline erosion, landslides and previous anthropogenic activity in coastal settings. In this study, the proposed methodology involves the systematic application of geophysical methods (FDEM, 3D GPR, 3D ERT, seismic), starting with a broad-scale survey and then proceeding to a localized exploration, in order to identify lithostratigraphy, bedrock depth, sea water intrusion and detect anthropogenic buried features. The critical aspect is to leverage the unique strengths and limitations of each method within the coastal environment, so as to derive valuable insights for survey design (extension and orientation of measurements) and data interpretation. The coastal zone of Throrikos valley, Attica, Greece, serves as the test site of our geophysical investigation methodology. The planning of the geophysical survey included three phases: The application of frequency-domain electromagnetic (FDEM) and 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods followed by a 3D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey and finally, using the seismic refraction tomography (SRT) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW). The FDEM method confirmed the geomorphological study findings by revealing the paleo-coastline, superficial layers of coarse material deposits and sea water preferential flow due to the presence of anthropogenic buried features. Subsequently, the 3D GPR survey was able to offer greater detail in detecting the remains of an old marble pier inland and top layer relief of coarse material deposits. The 3D ERT measurements, deployed in a U-shaped grid, successfully identified the anthropogenic feature, mapped sea water intrusion, and revealed possible impermeable formation connected to the bedrock. ERT results cannot clearly discriminate between limestone or deposits, as sea water intrusion lowers resistivity values in both formations. Finally, SRT, in combination with MASW, clearly resolves this dilemma identifying the lithostratigraphy and bedrock top relief. The findings provide critical input for engineering decisions related to foundation planning, construction feasibility, and preservation of coastal infrastructure. The methodology supports risk-informed design and sustainable development in areas with both natural and cultural heritage sensitivity. The applied approach aims to provide a complete information package to the modern engineer when faced with specific challenges in coastal settings. Full article

Chinese lacquer, a historically significant bio-based coating, has garnered increasing attention in sustainable materials research due to its outstanding corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and environmental friendliness. Its curing process relies on the laccase-catalyzed oxidation and polymerization of urushiol to form a dense lacquer film. However, the stringent temperature and humidity requirements (20–30 °C, 70–80% humidity) and a curing period that can extend over several weeks severely constrain its industrial application. Recent studies have significantly enhanced the curing efficiency through strategies such as pre-polymerization control, metal ion catalysis (e.g., Cu2+ reducing drying time to just one day), and nanomaterial modification (e.g., nano-Al2O3 increasing film hardness to 6H). Nevertheless, challenges remain, including the sensitivity of laccase activity to environmental fluctuations, the trade-off between accelerated curing and film performance, and issues related to toxic pigments and VOC emissions. Future developments should integrate enzyme engineering (e.g., directed evolution to broaden laccase tolerance), intelligent catalytic systems (e.g., photo-enzyme synergy), and green technologies (e.g., UV curing), complemented by multiscale modeling and circular design strategies, to drive the innovative applications of Chinese lacquer in high-end fields such as aerospace sealing and cultural heritage preservation. Traditional fermented foods are appreciated worldwide for their cultural significance and health-promoting properties. However, traditional fermentation production suffers from many obstacles such as microbial variability, varying quality, and lack of scalability. The implementation of smart fermentation technologies, including biosensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), hold the key to the optimization of microbial process control, enhance product consistency, and improve production efficiency. This review summarizes modern developments in real-time microbial monitoring, IoT, AI, and ML tailored to traditional fermented foods. Despite significant technical advancements, challenges related to high costs, the absence of standardized frameworks, and access restrictions for small producers remain substantial limitations. This review proposed a future direction prioritizing modular, scalable solutions, open-source innovation, and environmental sustainability. In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), smart fermentation technologies advance sustainable industry through innovation and serve as a critical bridge between traditional craftsmanship and Industry 4.0, fostering inclusive development while preserving microbial biodiversity and cultural heritage. This article addresses the issue of historical heritage revitalization using the example of a tavern. The concept presented in this study constitutes an attempt to establish a connection between the community’s tangible historical legacy and the green space that both highlights and reinforces its significance. The Tatary district in Lublin includes areas along Mełgiewska Street, Zadębie III, and the village of Hajdów. It is a residential and industrial district with landmarks such as the Graff Manor and the Krauze Brothers’ Mill. Since the Middle Ages, a crossing existed here at the narrowing of the Bystrzyca River valley, where major communication routes from Lithuania to Łęczna and from Ruthenia to Mełgiew intersected. Located in this area, the Red Inn has one of the oldest culinary traditions in Lublin, dating back to the 16th century. The building is listed in the register of monuments under number A/268. The revitalization of this currently non-operational inn should focus on restoring the building to preserve its original character and historical value while adapting it to modern standards. The inn and its surroundings have been subjected to field analyses on multiple research levels, culminating in a land development project. A key element of the plantings here are native species that support biodiversity. Full article

As a crucial component of cultural heritage, industrial heritage possesses considerable cultural, historical, and economic significance. The key challenge for industrial heritage sites is to foster eco-conscious actions among visitors while boosting tourism spending. Based on the S-O-R theory, we constructed a relationship model between authenticity, place attachment and environmental responsibility behavior through structural equation modeling and tested it with the survey data of tourists in Maoming open-pit mine ecological park. Findings reveal that both the object-related authenticity and the existential authenticity of the experience enhance the sense of reliance and belonging to the place, with the former also directly promoting visitors’ eco-conscious actions. In contrast, experiential authenticity does not exert a direct effect on eco-conscious actions. The sense of place reliance and identity are found to be significantly and positively linked to eco-conscious behavior. Furthermore, place reliance and identity act as intermediaries in the relationship between object authenticity, experiential authenticity, and eco-conscious behavior, serving as a sequential mediating factor. The study suggests strategies such as augmenting financial support to preserve the authenticity of the site, prioritizing the enhancement of infrastructure and the creation of cultural offerings to elicit emotional responses, and reinforcing emotional bonds to encourage eco-conscious actions. In response to the global goal of carbon neutrality, the tourism industry faces mounting pressure to reduce emissions. Characteristic towns that rely on traditional, high-emission models urgently require low-carbon tourism transformation strategies to meet environmental targets while preserving cultural heritage and economic vitality. This study investigates the low-carbon transition pathways of tourism in characteristic towns, using the three-dimensional impact mechanism of tourists, residents, and enterprises as a conceptual entry point. Drawing on empirical research conducted in Zhouzhuang and Tongli—two ancient towns in Suzhou—the study identifies key drivers and barriers to the development of low-carbon tourism. Results indicate that the overall low-carbon transformation score for Suzhou’s characteristic towns is 63.3, suggesting a moderate level of progress. Specifically, Zhouzhuang scored 66.9, while Tongli lagged behind at 57.6, highlighting notable disparities in transition efforts. The study applies multi-agent game theory and system dynamics to analyze the interactive mechanisms among tourists, residents, and enterprises in the low-carbon transition. Our findings reveal that tourists’ low-carbon consumption behaviors, residents’ environmental awareness, and enterprises’ green investments significantly influence the transition process. Further analysis using a chain mediation model shows that policy support positively affects low-carbon outcomes by promoting enterprise investment and influencing resident behavior. The study’s innovation lies in its development of an integrated analytical framework that captures the dynamic interplay among multiple stakeholders, offering a comprehensive perspective on low-carbon tourism transformation in characteristic towns. This study contributes to the sustainable tourism literature and provides valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners working toward carbon neutrality in tourism destinations. Full article

This paper argues for a paradigm shift in heritage conservation—one that integrates affective connections, digital technologies, and circular economy principles to respond to the complex realities of urban transformation. Using the case of the Dennys Lascelles Wool Store in Geelong, this position paper contends that current preservation models, rooted in the Authoritative Heritage Discourse (AHD), are inadequate for addressing the nuanced value of industrial heritage, particularly when physical structures are altered or lost. The demolition of the Wool Store’s iconic bow truss structure exemplifies the tension between rapid urban development and heritage conservation. While the physical element has been removed, the site’s cultural and emotional resonance persists, underscoring the role of affect in shaping collective memory and place identity. This paper positions affect as a critical component of heritage discourse—one that expands beyond materiality to include sensory and emotional dimensions often overlooked by institutional frameworks. Digital heritage technologies offer powerful tools to document, represent, and interpret both tangible and intangible aspects of cultural heritage. In the case of the Wool Store, these tools not only preserve what has been lost but also invite public engagement and reinterpretation. However, preservation should not end with digital replication. A circular economy approach calls for the adaptive reuse of remaining structures, allowing historic sites to evolve functionally while retaining their significance. Full article

Pakistan, a country with a rich cultural heritage and diverse products, enacted the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act 2020 to comply with the WTO’s TRIPS Agreement, which defines GIs as signs linking products to their geographic origin based on unique qualities or reputation. This legal framework aims to protect local products, promote exports, and drive economic growth. To date, Pakistan has 10 registered and 65 notified GIs. This study critically examines Pakistan’s GI framework, highlighting gaps in legislation, enforcement, institutional capacity, and stakeholder awareness. It assesses Pakistan’s alignment with international standards (e.g., the EU model) and explores how GIs can foster sustainable rural development, cultural preservation, and economic growth. As a governance tool, GIs ensure equitable benefit-sharing, enhance market competitiveness, and promote eco-friendly traditional practices. The findings reveal that addressing policy weaknesses and strengthening institutional mechanisms could unlock the full socio-economic potential of GIs, contributing to sustainable industrialization and rural uplift. Aligning Pakistan’s GI framework with global best practices would not only protect indigenous products but also boost their international recognition, reduce poverty, and advance sustainable development goals. The Effects of Repeated Kurome Treatment on Chinese Lacquer and Its Film Properties

This study systematically investigates the effects of repeated Kurome treatment—a physical modification method combining mechanical stirring and oxidative regulation—on the processing characteristics and film properties of Chinese lacquer (urushi). By subjecting raw lacquer to 1–4 cycles of hydration–dehydration (KL1–KL4), the researchers observed a significant increase in viscosity (from 12,688 to 16,468 mPa·s) and a dramatic reduction in curing time (from 74 h to just 3.6 h), driven by deep oxidation of urushiol and quinone-mediated crosslinking, as confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The Kurome treatment enabled controlled darkening (L* value decreased from 29.31 to 26.89) while maintaining stable hue and gloss (88.96–90.96 GU), with no adverse effects on abrasion resistance (mass loss of 0.126–0.150 g/100 r) or adhesion (9.58–9.75 MPa). The reduced transparency of the KL3/KL4 films is associated with a densified polymer network, a feature that may benefit protective coatings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed the formation of uniform, defect-free surfaces across all treatment groups. Among them, the KL2 group (viscosity of 14,630 mPa·s, curing time of 9.2 h) exhibited the most favorable balance for industrial applications. This study establishes Kurome technology as a low-carbon, additive-free strategy that enhances the processability of Chinese lacquer while preserving its traditional craftsmanship standards, offering scientific support for its sustainable use in modern coatings and cultural heritage conservation. The north of Portugal and Porto, a city recognised as a World Heritage Site, stand out for their rich historical trajectory, fostering a continuous increase in tourists over the past decade. This distinction has played a crucial role in acknowledging cultural and landscape heritage while promoting a heightened flow of visitors to the region. Portuguese gastronomy is a key factor in the growth of this tourism industry. It is a living tradition passed down through generations, deeply rooted in regional history and practices, where the residents play a vital role as custodians of these customs and traditions. The primary aim of this article is to analyse residents’ perceptions from the North of Portugal regarding the recognition of gastronomy as a cultural heritage and its role as a tool for tourism development. To achieve this aim, structured questionnaires were distributed to residents using an approach in popular urban tourism areas of Porto between May and October 2022, resulting in 262 valid responses. The findings reveal that participants consider it essential to preserve traditional dishes and ensure their transmission across generations. Regarding tourism, most respondents concur that it positively contributes to the preservation of traditional gastronomy, valuing it as an integral part of cultural heritage. Full article

Revitalizing Inner Areas Through Thematic Cultural Routes and Multifaceted Tourism Experiences

Cultural tourism can act as a driver for inner area development, bringing about a range of socio-economic benefits through economic stimulation, quality of life improvement, and cultural heritage preservation. Inner territories, set apart by geographic marginality and low population density, hold a rich cultural and environmental heritage that, however, remains off the radar and left behind. Guided by the principles of endogenous local development, this article seeks to contribute to the existing body of research by proposing potential strategies for local growth rooted in cultural tourism. From this perspective, we identified the Basilicata region (Southern Italy) as a proper test area. The region is rich in archaeological, monumental and museum evidence, but is characterized, except in a few areas, by a low rate of tourist turnout. Through a replicable, comprehensive, and flexible methodology—drawing on bibliographic research, analysis of archaeological, archival, erudite and antiquarian sources, and carrying out field surveys—the different points of interest in the region have been brought together under specific cultural themes. Results include the design of three detailed routes (Via Herculia, Frederick II’s, and St Michael’s cultural routes) useful for three different types of tourism (sustainable, emotional, and accessible). Possible scenarios for valorization and fruition are also proposed, paying particular attention to digital technologies. Thus, this research aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 11 promoting cultural heritage valorization and preservation, shoring up economic revitalization, stepping up community engagement, and pushing forward environmentally friendly tourism practices. Research findings can attract the interest of a wide range of stakeholders such as tourism professionals, local authorities, cultural and creative industries, local communities and entrepreneurs, as well as academics and researchers. The methodological approach can be considered for the valorization and tourist enjoyment of inner areas in other countries, with particular focus on those falling within the Mediterranean region which is rich in cultural heritage, environmental value, and socio-economic potential.
