The resource utilization of construction waste and industrial solid waste is a crucial aspect in promoting global urbanization and sustainable development. This study focuses on the preparation of mine backfill materials using construction waste in combination with various industrial solid wastes—ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), phosphorus slag (PS), fly ash–phosphorus slag–phosphogypsum composite (FA-PS-PG), and fly ash–phosphorus slag–β-phosphogypsum composite (FA-PS-βPG)—under different substitution rates (50%, 55%, 60%) as control parameters. A total of 19 mix proportions were investigated, evaluating their slump, dry density, compressive strength, uniaxial compressive stress–strain relationship, micromorphology, and phase composition. The results indicate that, compared to backfill materials prepared with pure cement, the incorporation of industrial solid wastes improves the fluidity of the backfill materials. At 56 days, the constitutive model parameter a increased to varying degrees, while parameter b decreased, indicating enhanced ductility. The compressive strength was consistently higher with PS at all substitution rates. The FA-PS-PG mixture with a 50% substitution rate achieved the highest 56-day compressive strength of 8.02 MPa. These findings can facilitate the application of construction waste and industrial solid waste in mine backfilling projects, delivering economic, environmental, and resource-related benefits. Hydration, Soundness, and Strength of Low Carbon LC3 Mortar Using Waste Brick Powder as a Source of Calcined Clay

The construction industry is responsible for 39% of global CO2 emissions related to energy use, with cement responsible for 5–8% of it. Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3), a ternary blended binder system, offers a low-carbon alternative by partially substituting clinker with calcined clay and limestone. This study investigated the use of waste clay brick powder (WBP), a waste material, as a source of calcined clay in LC3 formulations, addressing both environmental concerns and SCM scarcity. Two LC3 mixtures containing 15% limestone, 5% gypsum, and either 15% or 30% WBP, corresponding to clinker contents of 65% (LC3-65) or 50% (LC3-50), were evaluated against general purpose (GP) cement mortar. Tests included setting time, flowability, soundness, compressive and flexural strengths, drying shrinkage, isothermal calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Isothermal calorimetry showed peak heat flow reductions of 26% and 49% for LC3-65 and LC3-50, respectively, indicating a slower reactivity of LC3. The initial and final setting times of the LC3 mixtures were 10–30 min and 30–60 min longer, respectively, due to the slower hydration kinetics caused by the reduced clinker content. Flowability increased in LC3-50, which is attributed to the lower clinker content and higher water availability. At 7 days, LC3-65 retained 98% of the control’s compressive strength, while LC3-50 showed a 47% reduction. At 28 days, the compressive strengths of mixtures LC3-65 and LC3-50 were 7% and 46% lower than the control, with flexural strength reductions being 8% and 40%, respectively. The porosity calculated from the SEM images was found to be 7%, 11%, and 15% in the control, LC3-65, and LC3-50, respectively. Thus, the reduction in strength is attributed to the slower reaction rate and increased porosity associated with the reduced clinker content in LC3 mixtures. However, the results indicate that the performance of LC3-65 was close to that of the control mix, supporting the viability of WBP as a low-carbon partial replacement of clinker in LC3. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate solid-state fermentation (SSF) as a sustainable approach for the simultaneous detoxification of olive pomace (OP) and the production of industrially relevant enzymes. OP, a semisolid byproduct of olive oil extraction, is rich in lignocellulose and phenolic compounds, which limit its direct reuse due to phytotoxicity. A native strain of Aspergillus sp., isolated from OP, was employed as the biological agent, while grape pomace (GP) was added as a co-substrate to enhance substrate structure. Fermentations were conducted at two scales, Petri dishes (20 g) and a fixed-bed bioreactor (FBR, 2 kg), under controlled conditions (25 °C, 7 days). Key parameters monitored included dry and wet weight loss, pH, color, phenolic content, and enzymatic activity. Significant reductions in color and polyphenol content were achieved, reaching 68% in Petri dishes and 88.1% in the FBR, respectively. In the FBR, simultaneous monitoring of dry and wet weight loss enabled the estimation of fungal biotransformation, revealing a hysteresis phenomenon not previously reported in SSF studies. Enzymes such as xylanase, endopolygalacturonase, cellulase, and tannase exhibited peak activities between 150 and 180 h, with maximum values of 424.6 U·g−1, 153.6 U·g−1, 67.43 U·g−1, and 6.72 U·g−1, respectively. The experimental data for weight loss, enzyme production, and phenolic reduction were accurately described by logistic and first-order models. These findings demonstrate the high metabolic efficiency of the fungal isolate under SSF conditions and support the feasibility of scaling up this process. The proposed strategy offers a low-cost and sustainable solution for OP valorization, aligning with circular economy principles by transforming agro-industrial residues into valuable bioproducts. In this work, lightweight aggregates (LWAs) were prepared from an Italian red clay, pumice scraps, and spent coffee grounds. Chemical and physical characterization was first performed on the raw materials and then on the finished products. By studying the thermal behavior of the materials, the correct firing temperature was evaluated. The obtained aggregates were fired in two different modes: in a rotary kiln and in a static kiln; the influence of the firing processes on the finished products was assessed. This study can be useful for industrially scaling up this process. Firing in a rotary kiln reduced the average diameter of the aggregates (negative expansion index), resulting in a higher compressive strength and dry particle density compared to an aggregate containing only clay. The pH and electrical conductivity values address their use in agronomy without causing problems to crops, while the higher compressive strength, density, and porosity values could allow their use in construction. This study optimizes the production of activated carbons from hydrothermally carbonized (HTC) biomass using potassium hydroxide (KOH) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) as activating agents. A 23 factorial experimental design evaluated the effects of agent-to-precursor ratio, dry impregnation time, and activation duration on mass yield and iodine adsorption capacity. KOH-activated carbons achieved superior iodine numbers (up to 1289 mg/g) but lower mass yields (18–35%), reflecting enhanced porosity at the cost of material loss. Conversely, H3PO4 activation yielded higher mass retention (up to 54.86%) with moderate iodine numbers (up to 1117.3 mg/g), balancing porosity and yield. HTC pretreatment at 190 °C reduced the ash content, thereby enhancing the stability of hydrochar. These findings highlight the trade-offs between adsorption performance and process efficiency, with KOH suited for high-porosity applications (e.g., water purification) and H3PO4 for industrial scalability. The study advances biomass waste valorization, aligning with circular economy principles and offering sustainable solutions for environmental and industrial applications, such as water purification and energy storage. Broth cooking is a traditional pretreatment and ripening strategy for high-commercial-value dehydrated marine food, effectively enhancing its texture and rehydration properties. In this work, we characterized the structural information of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) derived from beef scrap stock and investigated their effects on the texture and rehydration performance of dehydrated abalone. The optical and structural properties of the MRPs were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. These MRPs showed osmosis in abalone processing including pretreatment and drying. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) results revealed that MRP pretreatment improved the moisture migration and physicochemical properties of dehydrated abalone. These findings suggest that MRPs, owing to their high osmotic efficiency and nanoscale size, could serve as promising food additives and potential alternatives to traditional penetrating agents in the food industry, enhancing the rehydration performance of dried seafood and reducing quality deterioration. This study investigates the thermal stability and microstructural evolution of the solid electrolyte medium used in DLyte® dry electropolishing and dry anodizing processes. Samples were thermally aged between 30 °C and 45 °C to simulate Joule heating during industrial operation. Visual and SEM analyses revealed shape deformation and microcrack formation at temperatures above 40 °C, potentially reducing particle packing efficiency and electrolyte performance. Particle size distribution shifted from bimodal to trimodal upon aging, with an overall size reduction of up to 39.5% due to dehydration effects, impacting ionic transport properties. Weight-loss measurements indicated a diffusion-limited dehydration mechanism, stabilizing at 15–16% mass loss. Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed water removal while maintaining the essential sulfonic acid groups responsible for ionic conductivity. In dry anodizing tests on titanium, aged electrolytes enhanced process efficiency, producing TiO2 films with improved optical properties—color and brightness—while preserving thickness and uniformity (~70 nm). The results highlight the need to carefully control thermal exposure to maintain electrolyte integrity and ensure consistent process performance. Full article

The global cement industry remains a significant contributor to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, prompting substantial research efforts toward sustainable construction materials. Lithium slag (LS), a by-product of lithium extraction, has attracted attention as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM). This review synthesizes experimental findings on LS replacement levels, fresh-state behavior, mechanical performance (compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths), time-dependent deformation (shrinkage and creep), and durability (sulfate, acid, abrasion, and thermal) of LS-modified concretes. Statistical analysis identifies an optimal LS dosage of 20–30% (average 24%) for maximizing compressive strength and long-term durability, with 40% as a practical upper limit for tensile and flexural performance. Fresh-state tests show that workability losses at high LS content can be mitigated via superplasticizers. Drying shrinkage and creep strains decrease in a dose-dependent manner with up to 30% LS. High-volume (40%) LS blends achieve up to an 18% gain in 180-day compressive strength and >30% reduction in permeability metrics. Under elevated temperatures, 20% LS mixes retain up to 50% more residual strength than controls. In advanced systems—autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), one-part geopolymers, and recycled aggregate composites—LS further enhances both microstructural densification and durability. In particular, LS emerges as a versatile SCM that optimizes mechanical and durability performance, supports material circularity, and reduces the carbon footprint. Full article

A shallow quaternary sedimentary aquifer within the river alluvial deposits of eastern Uzbekistan is increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities. Despite its essential role in supplying water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes, the aquifer system remains poorly understood. This study employed a three-dimensional MODFLOW-based groundwater flow model to assess climate change impacts on water budget components under the SSP5-8.5 scenario for 2020–2099. Model calibration yielded RMSE values between 0.25 and 0.51 m, indicating satisfactory performance. Simulations revealed that lateral inflows from upstream and side-valley alluvial deposits contribute over 84% of total inflow, while direct recharge from precipitation (averaging 120 mm/year, 24.7% of annual rainfall) and riverbed leakage together account for only 11.4%. Recharge occurs predominantly from November to April, with no recharge from June to August. Under future scenarios, winter recharge may increase by up to 22.7%, while summer recharge could decline by up to 100%. Groundwater storage is projected to decrease by 7.3% to 58.3% compared to 2010–2020, indicating the aquifer’s vulnerability to prolonged dry periods. These findings emphasize the urgent need for adaptive water management strategies and long-term monitoring to ensure sustainable groundwater use under changing climate conditions. Full article

Kefiran, the extracellular polysaccharide produced from the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) bacteria in kefir grains, with its well-documented functional and health-promoting properties, constitutes a promising biopolymer with a variety of possible uses. Its compatibility with other biopolymers, such as milk proteins, and its ability to form standalone cryogels allow it to be utilized for the fabrication of films with improved properties for applications in the food and biomedical–pharmaceutical industries. In the present work, the properties of kefiran films were investigated in the presence of milk proteins (sodium caseinate, native and heat-treated whey proteins, and their mixtures), alongside glycerol (as a plasticizer) and cryo-treatment of the film-forming solution prior to drying. A total of 24 kefiran films were fabricated and studied for their physical (thickness, moisture content, water solubility, color parameters and vapor adsorption), mechanical (tensile strength and elongation at break), and optical properties. Milk proteins increased film thickness, solubility and tensile strength and reduced water vapor adsorption. The hygroscopic effect of glycerol was mitigated in the presence of milk proteins and/or the application of cryo-treatment. Glycerol was the most effective at reducing the films’ opacity. Heat treatment of whey proteins proved to be the most effective in increasing film tensile strength, reducing, at the same time, the elongation at break, while sodium caseinates in combination with cryo-treatment resulted in films with high tensile strength and the highest elongation at break. Cryo-treatment, carried out in the present study through freezing followed by gradual thawing of the film-forming solution, proved to be the most effective factor in decreasing film roughness. Based on our results, proper selection of the film-forming solution composition and its treatment prior to drying can result in kefiran–glycerol films with favorable properties for particular applications. Seafood contamination by heavy metals is a growing public health concern, particularly in regions like Tunisia where seafood is a major dietary component. This study assessed concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the muscle tissue of the red shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris, collected in 2023 from four coastal regions: Bizerte, Monastir, Kerkennah, and Gabes. Metal analysis was conducted using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. This species was chosen due to its ecological and economic importance. The study sites were chosen based on their differing levels of industrial, urban, and agricultural influence, providing a representative overview of regional contamination patterns. Mean concentrations were 1.04 µg/g for Zn, 0.59 µg/g for Cu, 1.56 µg/g for Pb, and 0.21 µg/g for Cd (dry weight). Pb was the most prevalent metal across sites. Statistically significant variation was observed only for Cu (p = 0.0334). All metal concentrations were below international safety limits set by FAO/WHO and the European Union. Compared to similar studies, the levels reported were similar or slightly lower. Human health risk was evaluated using target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) values. For adults, THQ ranged from 5.44 × 10−6 to 8.43 × 10−4, while for children it ranged from 2.40 × 10−5 to 3.72 × 10−3. HI values were also well below 1, indicating negligible non-carcinogenic risk. CR values for Cd and Pb in both adults and children fell within the acceptable risk range (10−6 to <10−4), suggesting no significant carcinogenic concern. This study provides the first field-based dataset on metal contamination in P. longirostris from Tunisia, contributing valuable insights for seafood safety monitoring and public health protection. The poor heat conductivity and high ductility of stainless steel results in poor heat distribution, accelerating tool wear and problematic chip formation. To mitigate these challenges, the implementation of surface texturing has been identified as a beneficial strategy. This study investigates the impact of wave-type texturing patterns, developed on the flank surface of tungsten carbide ceramic tool inserts, on the machinability of AISI 316 stainless steel under dry cutting conditions. In this investigation, chip morphology and surface roughness were used as key indicators of machinability. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted for chip thickness, chip thickness ratio, and surface roughness, while Taguchi mono-objective optimization was applied to chip thickness. The ANOVA results showed that linear models accounted for 71.92%, 83.13%, and 82.86% of the variability in chip thickness, chip thickness ratio, and surface roughness, respectively, indicating a strong fit to the experimental data. Microscopic analysis confirmed a substantial reduction in chip thickness, with a minimum observed value of 457.64 µm. The corresponding average surface roughness Ra value 1.645 µm represented the best finish across all experimental runs, highlighting the relationship between thinner chips and enhanced surface quality. In conclusion, wave textures on the cutting tool’s flank face have the potential to facilitate the dry machining of AISI 316 stainless steel to obtain favorable machinability. Full article

Tomato processing waste (TPW) represents a valuable but underutilized by-product of the food industry with potential for valorization within bioeconomy models. This study investigated the chemical composition, antioxidant profile, and sanitary safety of TPW, analyzing the whole TPW; its fractions (peels and seeds) and oil are obtained from TPW seeds. All samples showed contaminant levels within regulatory limits, confirming their safety for further applications. Various drying methods (air-drying at 70 °C and at 50 °C, lyophilization and vacuum drying) and grinding intensities were evaluated to determine their impact on TPW bioactive compounds retention and organoleptic characteristics. TPW exhibited valuable nutritional properties, particularly high protein and dietary fiber content while TPW oil was characterized with high monounsaturated fatty acid content. Results demonstrated that drying method and particle size significantly influenced the yield of bioactive compound and organoleptic properties, with either lyophilization or vacuum drying and finer milling generally enhancing the recovery of polyphenols, β-carotene, and lycopene and improving color intensity. This research provides the first characterization of the TPW obtained from Croatian indigenous tomato varieties, establishing a scientific foundation for its sustainable valorization and, in broader terms, supporting circular economy objectives and contributing to more resource-efficient food systems. To address the problems of the time consumption, labor intensiveness, easy contamination, uneven drying, and impact on the medicinal efficacy of Fritillaria ussuriensis in the traditional drying method, the hot-air-drying characteristics of Fritillaria ussuriensis were studied. The changes in the moisture ratio and drying rate of Fritillaria ussuriensis under different hot-air-drying conditions (45 °C, 55 °C, 65 °C) were compared and analyzed. Six common mathematical models were used to fit the moisture change law, and it was found that the cubic model was the most suitable for describing the drying characteristics of Fritillaria ussuriensis. The R2 values after fitting under the three temperature conditions were all greater than 0.99, and the maximum was achieved at 45 °C. Based on the principle of hot-air drying, a drying device for Fritillaria ussuriensis with a processing capacity of 15 kg/h was designed. It adopted a thermal circulation structure of inner and outer drying ovens, with the heating chamber separated from the drying chamber. The structural parameters were optimized based on Fluent simulation analysis. After optimization, the temperature of each layer was stable at 338 K ± 2 K, and the pressure field and velocity field were evenly distributed. The drying process parameters of Fritillaria ussuriensis were optimized based on response surface analysis, and the optimal process parameters were obtained as follows: inlet temperature: 338 K (65 °C), inlet air velocity: 3 m/s, and drying time: 10 h. The simulation results showed that the predicted moisture content of Fritillaria ussuriensis under the optimal working conditions was 12.58%, the temperature difference of Fritillaria ussuriensis at different positions was within 0.8 °C, and the humidity deviation was about 1%. A prototype of the drying device was built, and the drying test of Fritillaria ussuriensis was carried out. It was found that the temperature and moisture content of Fritillaria ussuriensis were consistent with the simulation results and met the design requirements, verifying the rationality of the device structure and the reliability of the simulation model. This design can significantly improve the distribution of the internal flow field and temperature field of the drying device, improve the drying quality and production efficiency of Fritillaria ussuriensis, and provide a technical reference for the Chinese herbal medicine-drying industry. Molasses, a by-product of raw sugar production, is widely used as a cost-effective carbon and nutrient source for industrial fermentations, including the production of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Due to the cost and limited availability of molasses, efforts have been made to replace molasses with cheaper and more readily available substrates such as corn syrup. However, the quality of dry yeast drops following the replacement of molasses with corn syrup, despite the same amount of total sugar being provided. Our understanding of how molasses replacement affects yeast physiology, especially during the dehydration step, is limited. Here, we examined changes in gene expression of a strain of baker’s yeast during fermentation with increasing corn syrup to molasses ratios at the transcriptomic level. Our findings revealed that the limited availability of the key metal ions copper, iron, and zinc, as well as sulfur from corn syrup (i) reduced their intracellular storage, (ii) impaired the synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and ergosterol, as evidenced by the decreasing proportions of these important membrane components with higher proportions of corn syrup, and (iii) inactivated oxidative stress response enzymes. Taken together, the molecular and metabolic changes observed suggest a potential reduction in nutrient reserves for fermentation and a possible compromise in cell viability during the drying process, which may ultimately impact the quality of the final dry yeast product. These findings emphasize the importance of precise nutrient supplementation when substituting molasses with cheaper substrates. Full article
