We investigated the spatial structure and colony itinerancy of Audouin’s gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii) adult breeders across multiple breeding sites in the central Mediterranean Sea during 25 years of fieldwork. Using cluster analysis of marked individuals from different years and sites, we identified five spatial breeding units of increasing hierarchical scale—Breeding Sites, Colonies, Districts, Regions and Marine Sectors—which reflect biologically meaningful boundaries beyond simple geographic proximity. To determine the most appropriate scale for monitoring local populations, we applied multievent capture–recapture models and examined variation in survival and site fidelity across these units. Audouin’s gulls frequently change their location at the Breeding Site and Colony levels from one year to another, without apparent survival costs. In contrast, dispersal beyond Districts boundaries was found to be rare and associated with reduced survival rates, indicating that breeding Districts represent the most relevant biological unit for identifying local populations. The survival disadvantage observed in individuals leaving their District likely reflects increased extrinsic mortality in unfamiliar environments and the selective dispersal of lower-quality individuals. Within breeding Districts, birds may benefit from local knowledge and social information, supporting demographic stability and higher fitness. Our findings highlight the value of adopting a District-based framework for long-term monitoring and conservation of this endangered species. At this scale, demographic trends such as population growth or decline emerge more clearly than when assessed at the level of singular colonies. This approach can enhance our understanding of population dynamics in other mobile species and support more effective conservation strategies aligned with natural population structure. Full article

Recent breakthroughs in AI-generated content (AIGC) have transformed video creation, empowering systems to translate text, images, or audio into visually compelling stories. Yet reliable evaluation of these machine-crafted videos remains elusive because quality is governed not only by spatial fidelity within individual frames but also by temporal coherence across frames and precise semantic alignment with the intended message. The foundational role of sensor technologies is critical, as they determine the physical plausibility of AIGC outputs. In this perspective, we argue that multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are poised to become the cornerstone of next-generation video quality assessment (VQA). By jointly encoding cues from multiple modalities such as vision, language, sound, and even depth, the MLLM can leverage its powerful language understanding capabilities to assess the quality of scene composition, motion dynamics, and narrative consistency, overcoming the fragmentation of hand-engineered metrics and the poor generalization ability of CNN-based methods. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive analysis of current methodologies for assessing AIGC video quality, including the evolution of generation models, dataset design, quality dimensions, and evaluation frameworks. We argue that advances in sensor fusion enable MLLMs to combine low-level physical constraints with high-level semantic interpretations, further enhancing the accuracy of visual quality assessment. Crossover trials are specifically designed to evaluate treatment effects within individual participants through within-subject comparisons. In a standard AB/BA crossover trial, participants are randomly allocated to one of two treatment sequences: either the AB sequence (where patients receive treatment A first and then cross over to treatment B after a washout period) or the BA sequence (where patients receive B first and then cross over to A after a washout period). Asymptotic and approximate unconditional test procedures, based on two Wald-type statistics, the likelihood ratio statistic, and the score test statistic for the odds ratio (OR), are developed to evaluate the equality of treatment effects in this trial design. Additionally, confidence intervals for OR are constructed, accompanied by an approximate sample size calculation methodology to control the interval width at a pre-specified precision. Empirical analyses demonstrate that asymptotic test procedures exhibit robust performance in moderate to large sample sizes, though they occasionally yield unsatisfactory type I error rates when the sample size is small. In such cases, approximate unconditional test procedures emerge as a rigorous alternative. All proposed confidence intervals achieve satisfactory coverage probabilities, and the approximate sample size estimation method demonstrates high accuracy, as evidenced by empirical coverage probabilities aligning closely with pre-specified confidence levels under estimated sample sizes. To validate practical utility, two real examples are used to illustrate the proposed methodologies. Full article

Although cranial growth has been extensively explored, forensic and biological anthropology lack a formal incorporation of how cranial growth processes impact the adult phenotype and downstream biological profile estimations. Objectives: This research uses an ontogenetic framework to identify when interlandmark distances (ILDs) stabilize during growth to reach adult levels of variation and to evaluate patterns of cranial sexual size dimorphism. Methods: Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) were conducted on standardized cranial ILDs for 595 individuals from the Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database (SVAD) and the Forensic Data Bank (FDB) aged between birth and 25 years. Cross-Validated R-squared (CVRSq) values evaluated ILD variation explained by age while knot placements identified meaningful changes in ILD growth trajectories. Results: Results reveal the ages at which males and females reach craniometric maturity across splanchnocranium, neurocranium, basicranium and cross-regional ILDs. Changes in growth patterns observed here largely align with growth milestones of integrated soft tissue and skeletal structures as well as developmental milestones like puberty. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the variability in growth by sex and cranial region and move forensic anthropologists towards recognizing cranial growth as a mosaic, continuous process with overlap between subadults and adults rather than consistently approaching subadult and adult research separately. Background/Objectives: BRIGHTLIGHT was the national evaluation of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer services in England. BRIGHTLIGHT results were not available when the most recent healthcare policy (NHSE service specifications for AYA Cancer) for AYA was drafted and therefore did not consider BRIGHTLIGHT findings and recommendations. We describe the co-development and delivery of a Policy Lab to expedite the implementation of the new service specification in the context of BRIGHTLIGHT results, examining the roles of multi-stakeholders to ensure service delivery is optimised to benefit AYA patients. We address the key question, “What is the roadmap for empowering different stakeholders to shape how the AYA service specifications are implemented?”. Methods: A 1-day face-to-face policy lab was facilitated, utilising a unique, user-centric engagement approach by bringing diverse AYA stakeholders together to co-design strategies to translate BRIGHTLIGHT evidence into policy and impact. This was accompanied by an online workshop and prioritisation survey, individual interviews, and an AYA patient workshop. Workshop outputs were analysed thematically and survey data quantitatively. Results: Eighteen professionals and five AYAs attended the face-to-face Policy Lab, 16 surveys were completed, 13 attended the online workshop, three professionals were interviewed, and three AYAs attended the patient workshop. The Policy Lab generated eight national and six local recommendations, which were prioritised into three national priorities: 1. Launching the service specification supported by compelling communication; 2. Harnessing the ideas of young people; and 3. Evaluation of AYA patient outcomes/experiences and establishing a national dashboard of AYA cancer network performance. An animation was created by AYAs to inform local hospitals what matters to them most in the service specification. Conclusions: Policy and research evidence are not always aligned, so when emerging evidence does not support current guidance, further exploration is required. We have shown through multi-stakeholder involvement including young people that it was possible to gain a different interpretation based on current knowledge and context. This additional insight enabled practical recommendations to be identified to support the implementation of the service specification. Full article

This paper presents a numerical simulation study evaluating carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) feasibility for the Turceni Power Plant in Oltenia, Romania, using the nearby depleted Bibești-Bulbuceni gas reservoir. A comprehensive reservoir model was developed using Petrel software, integrating geological and reservoir engineering data for the formations of the Bibești-Bulbuceni structure, which is part of the western Moesian Platform. The static model incorporated realistic petrophysical inputs for the Meotian reservoirs. Dynamic simulations were performed using Eclipse compositional simulator with Peng–Robinson equation of state for a CH4-CO2 system. The model was initialized with natural gas initially in place at 149 bar reservoir pressure, then produced through depletion to 20.85 bar final pressure, achieving 80% recovery factor. CO2 injection simulations modeled a phased 19-well injection program over 25 years, with individual well constraints of 100 bar bottom-hole pressure and 200,000 Sm3/day injection rates. Results demonstrate successful injection of a 60 Mt CO2, with final reservoir pressure reaching 101 bar. The modeling framework validates the technical feasibility of transforming Turceni’s power generation into a net-zero process through CCS implementation. Key limitations include simplified geochemical interactions and relying on historical data with associated uncertainties. This study provides quantitative evidence for CCS viability in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, supporting industrial decarbonization strategies. The strategy not only aligns with the EU’s climate-neutral policy but also enhances local energy security by repurposing existing geological resources. The findings highlight the potential of CCS to bridge the gap between current energy systems and a sustainable, climate-neutral future. Full article

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can modulate cortical excitability in a polarity-specific manner, yet identical protocols often produce inconsistent outcomes across sessions or individuals. This narrative review proposes that much of this variability arises from the brain’s intrinsic temporal landscape. Integrating evidence from chronobiology, sleep research, and non-invasive brain stimulation, we argue that tDCS produces reliable, polarity-specific after-effects only within a circadian–homeostatic “window of efficacy”. On the circadian (Process C) axis, intrinsic alertness, membrane depolarisation, and glutamatergic gain rise in the late biological morning and early evening, whereas pre-dawn phases are marked by reduced excitability and heightened inhibition. On the homeostatic (Process S) axis, consolidated sleep renormalises synaptic weights, widening the capacity for further potentiation, whereas prolonged wakefulness saturates plasticity and can even reverse the usual anodal/cathodal polarity rules. Human stimulation studies mirror this two-process fingerprint: sleep deprivation abolishes anodal long-term-potentiation-like effects and converts cathodal inhibition into facilitation, while stimulating at each participant’s chronotype-aligned (phase-aligned) peak time amplifies and prolongs after-effects even under equal sleep pressure. From these observations we derive practical recommendations: (i) schedule excitatory tDCS after restorative sleep and near the individual wake-maintenance zone; (ii) avoid sessions at high sleep pressure or circadian troughs; (iii) log melatonin phase, chronotype, recent sleep and, where feasible, core temperature; and (iv) consider mild pre-heating or time-restricted feeding as physiological primers. By viewing Borbély’s two-process model and allied metabolic clocks as adjustable knobs for plasticity engineering, this review provides a conceptual scaffold for personalised, time-sensitive tDCS protocols that could improve reproducibility in research and therapeutic gain in the clinic. Disability Certification is an instrument that can contribute to the identification of persons with disabilities who are potential beneficiaries of social protection programmes. In Colombia, the disability certification process was changed in 2020 to include a human rights perspective. However, little information exists on how far the process aligns with the recommendations made by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities or to what extent it provides useful information for the operation of the country’s social protection system. This study aims to analyse how the changes implemented in 2020 have contributed to the identification and determination of persons with disabilities in social protection programmes in Colombia. This research uses an analytical-descriptive design, in which legal documents related to the social protection programme and disability certification were analysed. In addition, we conducted semi-structured interviews in Colombia with people with disabilities, professionals conducting the certification, and with key stakeholders, and we analysed the information using thematic analysis. Colombia changed its certification process in 2020, moving from a capacity-to-work assessment to a process of assessing functioning capacity and participation limitations following the International Classification of Functional Disability and Health. However, the new certification process has not provided an instrument to contribute to determining persons with disabilities who should be prioritised or receive social benefits in Colombia. The certification does not establish the support needs of people with disabilities, does not recommend reasonable adjustments to support their participation in society, and has not been used systematically in social protection programmes. Finally, individuals with disabilities commented that the disability certification is a process that does not open up opportunities to receive social benefits and social transfers, and in most cases, it is an expensive and lengthy process. Disability certification in Colombia is not an instrument that determines the needs of people with disabilities, nor the reasonable accommodations that they require in order to participate in society. In alignment with global educational trends, Australia has adopted a pluralistic approach to initial teacher education (ITE), encompassing traditional university-based programs, employment-integrated models and vocational training routes. This diversification of pathways has emerged as a strategic response to persistent workforce challenges, including chronic shortages, uneven distribution of qualified educators, and limited demographic diversity within the profession. Rather than supplanting conventional ITE models, these alternative pathways serve as complementary options, broadening access and enhancing system responsiveness to evolving societal and educational needs. The rise in non-traditional routes represents a deliberate response to the well-documented global teacher shortage, frequently examined in comparative educational research. Central to their design is a restructuring of traditional program elements, particularly duration and delivery methods, to facilitate more flexible and context-sensitive forms of teacher preparation. Such approaches often create opportunities for individuals who may be excluded from conventional pathways due to socioeconomic constraints, geographic isolation, or non-linear career trajectories. Significantly, the diversity introduced by alternative entry candidates has the potential to enrich school learning environments. These educators often bring a wide range of prior experiences, disciplinary knowledge, and cultural perspectives, contributing to more inclusive and representative teaching practices. The implications for student learning are substantial, particularly in disadvantaged communities where culturally and professionally diverse teachers may enhance engagement and academic outcomes. From a policy perspective, the development of flexible, multifaceted teacher education pathways constitutes a critical component of a sustainable workforce strategy. As demand for qualified teachers intensifies, especially in STEM disciplines and in rural, regional and remote areas, the role of alternative pathways is likely to become increasingly pivotal in achieving broader goals of equity, quality and innovation in teacher preparation. Background: Infectious complications are common after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Clinical guidelines recommend, previous to surgery, prolonged antibiotic regimens in patients with preoperative positive urine cultures to reduce infectious risk. However, such strategies may increase selective pressure and promote antimicrobial resistance. Evidence supporting the use of a single antibiotic dose tailored to culture sensitivity in these cases is limited but emerging. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study including 187 PCNL procedures performed between 2021 and 2023 under an individualized antibiotic prophylaxis protocol. Patients with negative or contaminated urine cultures received a single empirical dose, while those with recent positive cultures received a single dose based on antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Postoperative complications—including fever, sepsis, and a composite outcome—were analyzed through multivariable logistic regression, comparing high- and low-risk patients. Results: A total of 67.9% of procedures were performed in patients meeting at least one high-risk criterion, including a positive preoperative urine culture in 32.1%. The overall incidence of infectious complications was 11.9% (fever 8.7%, sepsis 3.2%), with no significant differences between risk groups. A low concordance was observed between preoperative and intraoperative urine cultures (Spearman = 0.3954). Conclusions: A single preoperative antibiotic dose adjusted to the antibiogram, even in patients with a positive urine culture, was not associated with increased infectious complications. This approach is an initial step that supports a rational and individualized prophylactic strategy aligned with the goals of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). Full article

In the context of promoting sustainable mobility, walking and cycling have been widely recognized for their environmental and health benefits. However, a notable gap often exists between residents’ motivation to engage in these modes and their actual behavior. This study focuses on this motivation–behavior discrepancy and explores how heterogeneous information interventions—within the constraints of the existing built environment—can effectively influence residents’ travel psychology and behavior. Drawing on Protection Motivation Theory, this study aims to uncover the psychological mechanisms behind travel-mode choices and quantify the relative impacts of different types of information interventions. A travel survey was conducted in Yangzhou, China, collecting data from 1052 residents. Cluster analysis was performed using travel psychology data to categorize travel motivations and examine their alignment with actual travel behavior. A random forest model was then employed to assess the effects of individual attributes, travel characteristics, and information intervention attributes on the choice of walking and cycling. The results reveal a significant motivation–behavior gap: while 76% of surveyed residents expressed motivation to walk or cycle, only 30% actually adopted these modes. Based on this, further research shows that informational attributes exhibit a stronger effect in terms of promoting walking and cycling behavior compared to individual attributes and travel characteristics. Among these, health-related information demonstrates the maximum efficacy in areas with well-developed infrastructure. Specifically, health-related information has a greater impact on cycling (21.4%), while environmental information exerts a stronger influence on walking (7.31%). These findings suggest that leveraging information to promote walking and cycling should be more targeted. Full article

Liquid biopsy (LB) has gained attention as a valuable approach for cancer diagnostics, providing a minimally invasive option compared to conventional tissue biopsies and helping to overcome issues related to patient discomfort and procedural invasiveness. Recent advances in biosensor technologies, particularly photonic sensors, have improved the accuracy, speed, and real-time capabilities for detecting circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. Incorporating these tools into clinical practice facilitates more informed therapeutic choices and contributes to tailoring treatments to individual patient profiles. This review highlights the clinical potential of LB, examines technological limitations, and outlines future research directions. Departing from traditional biosensor focused reviews, it adopts a reverse-mapping approach grounded in clinically relevant tumor biomarkers. Specifically, biomarkers associated with prevalent cancers, such as breast, prostate, and lung cancers, serve as the starting point for identifying the most suitable photonic sensing platforms. The analysis underscores the need to align sensor design with the physicochemical properties of each biomarker and the operational requirements of the application. No photonic platform is universally optimal; rather, each exhibits specific strengths depending on performance metrics such as sensitivity, limit of detection, and easy system integration. Within this framework, the review provides a comprehensive assessment of emerging photonic biosensors and outlines key priorities to support their effective clinical translation in cancer diagnostics. The exponential growth of video data across domains such as surveillance, transportation, and healthcare has raised critical challenges in scalability, real-time processing, and privacy preservation. While existing studies have addressed individual aspects of Video Big Data Analytics (VBDA), an integrated, up-to-date perspective remains limited. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of system architectures and enabling technologies in VBDA. It categorizes system architectures into four primary types as follows: centralized, cloud-based infrastructures, edge computing, and hybrid cloud–edge. It also analyzes key enabling technologies, including real-time streaming, scalable distributed processing, intelligent AI models, and advanced storage for managing large-scale multimodal video data. In addition, the study provides a functional taxonomy of core video processing tasks, including object detection, anomaly recognition, and semantic retrieval, and maps these tasks to real-world applications. Based on the survey findings, the paper proposes ViMindXAI, a hybrid AI-driven platform that combines edge and cloud orchestration, adaptive storage, and privacy-aware learning to support scalable and trustworthy video analytics. Our analysis in this survey highlights emerging trends such as the shift toward hybrid cloud–edge architectures, the growing importance of explainable AI and federated learning, and the urgent need for secure and efficient video data management. These findings highlight key directions for designing next-generation VBDA platforms that enhance real-time, data-driven decision-making in domains such as public safety, transportation, and healthcare. These platforms facilitate timely insights, rapid response, and regulatory alignment through scalable and explainable analytics. This work provides a robust conceptual foundation for future research on adaptive and efficient decision-support systems in video-intensive environments. Full article

Measurement of nitric oxide (NO) concentration in exhaled breath (FeNO) is a quantitative, non-invasive, simple, and safe method for assessing airway inflammation. It serves as a complementary tool to other methods for evaluating airway diseases. However, little is known about the typical NO levels in healthy individuals, including individual differences and the influence of measurement timing. Therefore, this study classified measurement times into four periods and statistically analyzed NO levels in healthy individuals. The mean values among groups were compared using repeated measures ANOVA on six participants. The analysis showed large individual variations in NO levels, resulting in no significant difference (p = 0.29). Notably, greater fluctuations were observed in the morning. These findings align with previous studies suggesting the influence of circadian rhythms and the redundancy of repeated measurements. This study highlights the need to consider timing and individual variability when using FeNO as a physiological marker in healthy populations. Full article

An Analysis of the Compatibility Between Popular Carbon Footprint Calculators and the Canadian National Inventory Report

Personal lifestyle choices contribute up to 75% of national emissions and yet the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories included in the National Inventory Report (NIR) of Canada provide limited insight on these choices. Better insight can be found using carbon footprint calculators that estimate individual emissions; however, they vary in regard to their input parameters, output data, and calculation methods. This study assessed five calculators, which are popular with the public, or compatibility with the Canadian NIR. A quantitative scoring matrix was developed to assess the output depth, academic proficiency, and effectiveness of the calculators to inform lifestyle changes, alongside NIR alignment. The results showed that the calculator with the overall highest cumulative score across all the comparative criteria was the one offered by Carbon Footprint Ltd. The other calculators that scored highly include CoolClimate Calculator and Carbon Independent. The potential of the calculators in regard to informing low-carbon lifestyles can be improved through the incorporation of more depth in terms of capturing the purchase information of goods and services and providing detailed secondary information to users, including mitigation strategies and carbon offset options. The main driver of incompatibility between the calculator tools and the NIR was the different approaches taken to the emissions inventory, with the NIR using a territorial framework and the calculators being consumption driven. The outcomes of this study demonstrate a global need for the evolution of NIR structuring to increase its relatability with citizens and for the improved standardization of publicly available tools.
