Background/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate sociodemographic factors, features of the acute infection, and post-infection health status in survivors of COVID-19, assessing their association with post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS). Methods: A multidisciplinary public clinic in Brazil assessed COVID-19 survivors between June 2020 and February 2022. Patients were classified as having PACS or subacute infection (SI). Data on the history of the acute infection, current symptoms, physical examination, and laboratory findings were collected and analyzed using multivariate models with PACS as the outcome. Results: Among the 113 participants, 63.71% were diagnosed with PACS at a median of 130 days (IQR: 53–196) following acute symptom onset. Admission to the intensive care unit was more frequent among individuals with PACS than those with SI (83.3% vs. 65.0% respectively; p = 0.037). Symptoms significantly more prevalent in the PACS group when compared to the SI cohort included hair loss (44.4% vs. 17.1% respectively; p = 0.004), lower limb paresthesia (34.7% vs. 9.8% respectively; p = 0.003), and slow thinking speed (28.2% vs. 0.0% respectively; p < 0.001). Logistic regression revealed that only the time interval between the onset of acute symptoms and the clinical evaluation was independently associated with a PACS diagnosis (β = 0.057; 95% CI: 1.03–1.08; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Patients with PACS had a higher frequency of intensive care unit admission compared to those with subacute infection. However, in the multivariate analysis, the severity of the acute infection did not predict the final diagnosis of PACS, which was associated only with the time elapsed since symptom onset. A wide range of strategies have been developed to modulate dysfunctional brain activities. This narrative review provides a comparative analysis of biophysical, genetic, and biological neuromodulation approaches with an emphasis on their known or unknown molecular targets and translational potential. The review incorporates data from both preclinical and clinical studies covering deep brain stimulation, transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation, focused ultrasound, chemogenetics, optogenetics, magnetogenetics, and toxin-based neuromodulation. Each method was assessed based on specificity, safety, reversibility, and mechanistic clarity. Biophysical methods are widely used in clinical practice but often rely on empirical outcomes due to undefined molecular targets. Genetic tools offer cell-type precision in experimental systems but face translational barriers related to delivery and safety. Biological agents, such as botulinum neurotoxins, provide long-lasting yet reversible inhibition via well-characterized molecular pathways. However, they require stereotaxic injections and remain invasive. To overcome individual limitations and improve targeting, delivery, and efficacy, there is a growing interest in the synthesis of multiple approaches. This review highlights a critical gap in the mechanistic understanding of commonly used methods. Addressing this gap by identifying molecular targets may help to improve therapeutic precision. This concise review could be valuable for researchers looking to enter the evolving field of the neuromodulation of brain function. Full article

Protective Efficacy of Lactobacillus plantarum Postbiotic beLP-K in a Dexamethasone-Induced Sarcopenia Model

Sarcopenia is characterized by a reduction in muscle function and skeletal muscle mass relative to that of healthy individuals. In older adults and those who are less resistant to sarcopenia, glucocorticoid secretion or accumulation during treatment exacerbates muscle protein degradation, potentially causing sarcopenia. This study assessed the preventive effects and mechanisms of heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum postbiotic beLP-K (beLP-K) against dexamethasone (DEX)-induced sarcopenia in C2C12 myotubes and Sprague-Dawley rats. The administration of beLP-K did not induce cytotoxicity and mitigated cell damage caused by DEX. Furthermore, beLP-K significantly reduced the expression of forkhead box O3 α (FoxO3α), muscle atrophy f-box (MAFbx)/atrogin-1, and muscle RING-finger protein-1 (MuRF1), which are associated with muscle protein degradation. DEX induced weight loss in rats; however, in the beLP-K group, weight gain was observed. Micro-computed tomography analysis revealed that beLP-K increased muscle mass, correlating with weight and grip strength. beLP-K alleviated the DEX-induced reduction in grip strength and increased the mass of hind leg muscles. The correlation between beLP-K administration and increased muscle mass was associated with decreased expression levels of muscle degradation-related proteins such as MAFbx/atrogin-1 and MuRF1. Therefore, beLP-K may serve as a treatment for sarcopenia or as functional food material. Full article

In the globalizing world, raising individuals equipped with 21st-century skills is very important for the economic development of countries. Educational practices that support 21st-century skills are also gaining importance. In this context, STEM education, an interdisciplinary educational practice that develops 21st-century skills, emerges. STEM education aims to contribute to sustainable development by training individuals equipped with 21st-century skills and competencies. In a globalizing world, countries must set sustainable development goals to gain a foothold in the global market. In today’s world, where artificial intelligence also shows itself in every area of human life, it is possible to discuss the importance of artificial intelligence-supported STEM education. This study aims to reveal the educational needs of primary school teachers regarding artificial intelligence-supported STEM education. The study was conducted according to the phenomenological design, and the data were collected using a semi-structured interview form and literature review techniques. The thematic analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. According to the research results obtained from the findings of the study, teachers need training on 21st-century skills, interdisciplinary thinking, technology integration into courses, and artificial intelligence practices in courses to develop their knowledge and skills in the context of artificial intelligence-supported STEM education. Background: Genetic polymorphisms in the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene may contribute to individual susceptibility to periodontal disease. A meta-analysis assessed the association between three COX-2 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) namely, −765 G/C (rs20417), −1195 G/A (rs689466), and 8473 T/C (rs5275), and the risk of CP. Methods: Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search of five electronic databases and additional sources. The eligible studies were observational (case–control or cohort) with genotypic data comparing individuals with periodontal disease and periodontally healthy controls. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS), and the certainty of evidence was evaluated via the GRADE framework. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated under dominant genetic models. Results: Seven studies (n = 1467 participants) met the inclusion criteria. No eligible studies evaluated the 8473 T/C SNP. The meta-analysis of the −765 G/C variant revealed a significant association with periodontal disease (OR = 1.61; 95% CI: 1.12–2.32, p = 0.03; I2 = 0%). For the −1195 G/A variant, the pooled OR was 1.86 (95% CI: 1.00–3.43, p = 0.05; I2 = 35%), suggesting a borderline significant association. The certainty of evidence was graded as moderate for −765 G/C and low for −1195 G/A. Conclusions: The COX-2 −765 G/C polymorphism is significantly associated with increased CP risk, while the −1195 G/A variant shows a potential, though less certain, link. Larger, high-quality studies using standardized classifications are needed to confirm these associations. Full article

Cultured meat is emerging as a sustainable alternative to conventional animal agriculture, with scaffolds playing a central role in supporting cellular attachment, growth, and tissue maturation. This review focuses on the development of gel-based hybrid biomaterials that meet the dual requirements of biocompatibility and food safety. We explore recent advances in the use of naturally derived gel-forming polymers such as gelatin, chitosan, cellulose, alginate, and plant-based proteins as the structural backbone for edible scaffolds. Particular attention is given to the integration of food-grade functional additives into hydrogel-based scaffolds. These include nanocellulose, dietary fibers, modified starches, polyphenols, and enzymatic crosslinkers such as transglutaminase, which enhance mechanical stability, rheological properties, and cell-guidance capabilities. Rather than focusing on fabrication methods or individual case studies, this review emphasizes the material-centric design strategies for building scalable, printable, and digestible gel scaffolds suitable for cultured meat production. By systemically evaluating the role of each component in structural reinforcement and biological interaction, this work provides a comprehensive frame work for designing next-generation edible scaffold systems. Nonetheless, the field continues to face challenges, including structural optimization, regulatory validation, and scale-up, which are critical for future implementation. Ultimately, hybrid gel-based scaffolds are positioned as a foundational technology for advancing the functionality, manufacturability, and consumer readiness of cultured meat products, distinguishing this work from previous reviews. Unlike previous reviews that have focused primarily on fabrication techniques or tissue engineering applications, this review provides a uniquely food-centric perspective by systematically evaluating the compositional design of hybrid hydrogel-based scaffolds with edibility, scalability, and consumer acceptance in mind. Through a comparative analysis of food-safe additives and naturally derived biopolymers, this review establishes a framework that bridges biomaterials science and food engineering to advance the practical realization of cultured meat products. Background: Breast reconstruction post-mastectomy has increasingly emphasized the importance of sensory restoration. This study aimed to evaluate the comparative efficacy of anterior versus lateral cutaneous intercostal nerve branches in neurotization during abdominal-based autologous breast reconstruction. Methods: Through a systematic literature search and meta-analysis, we reviewed studies published between January 2003 and August 2023. Our methods involved categorizing studies based on the nerve branch used, extracting relevant data, and conducting a quality assessment. To determine the difference in the magnitude of sensory recovery, a meta-analysis was conducted to pool the effect sizes (mean differences) from individual studies. Given the potential for heterogeneity across studies, a random-effects model was employed using the DerSimonian and Laird method. Subgroup analysis was then performed to separately evaluate the effect sizes for the anterior and lateral groups. Results: We identified five studies for the anterior group and five studies for the lateral group. The anterior group included a total of 225 non-neurotized and 240 neurotized breasts, while the lateral group consisted of 62 non-neurotized and 51 neurotized breasts. The anterior group exhibited superior sensory recovery compared to the lateral group (p = 0.08 for the common effect model). The result was borderline significant, suggesting a trend towards a difference between the two groups. In terms of patient-reported outcomes, the anterior group provided data, while the lateral group lacked such data, underscoring a potential research gap. Conclusions: Results indicated a trend favoring the anterior cutaneous branch, with studies showing improved sensory outcomes and patient satisfaction. However, the choice between the two should be individualized, considering the patient’s unique needs and the surgeon’s expertise. Full article

Elucidating the coexistence mechanisms of rapidly diverging species has long been a challenge in evolutionary biology. Genome-wide polymorphic loci are expected to provide insights into the speciation processes of these closely related species. This study focused on seven Chinese sclerophyllous oaks, represented by Quercus spinosa, Quercus aquifolioides, Quercus rehderiana, Quercus guyavifolia, Quercus monimotricha, Quercus semecarpifolia, and Quercus senescens, employing 27,592 single-nucleotide polymorphisms to examine their phylogenetic relationships at the genomic level. Combined with genetic structure analysis, phylogenetic trees revealed that the genetic clustering of individuals was influenced by both geographic distance and ancestral genetic components. Furthermore, this study confirmed the existence of reticulate evolutionary relationships among the species. Frequent gene flow and introgression within the seven species were primarily responsible for the ambiguous interspecies boundaries, with hybridization serving as a major driver of reticulate evolution. Additionally, the seven species exhibited distinct differences in niche occupancy. By reconstructing the climatic adaptability of ancestral taxonomic units, we found that the climatic tolerance of each species displayed differential responses to 19 climatic factors. Consequently, ecological niche differentiation and variations in habitat adaptation contributed to the preservation of species boundaries. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the speciation processes in rapidly diverging genera and underscores the significance of both genetic and ecological factors in the formation and maintenance of species boundaries. Response Mechanisms of Vegetation Productivity to Water Variability in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas of China: A Decoupling Analysis of Soil Moisture and Precipitation

Arid and semi-arid areas serve a critical regulatory function within the global carbon cycle. Understanding the response mechanisms of vegetation productivity to variations in moisture availability represents a fundamental scientific challenge in elucidating terrestrial carbon dynamics. This study systematically disentangled the respective influences of summer surface soil moisture (RSM) and precipitation (PRE) on gross primary productivity (GPP) across arid and semi-arid regions of China from 2000 to 2022. Utilizing GPP datasets alongside correlation analysis, ridge regression, and data binning techniques, the investigation yielded several key findings: (1) Both GPP and RSM exhibited significant upward trends within the study area, whereas precipitation showed no statistically significant trend; notably, GPP demonstrated the highest rate of increase at 0.455 Cg m−2 a−1. (2) Decoupling analysis indicated a coupled relationship between RSM and PRE; however, their individual effects on GPP were not merely a consequence of this coupling. Controlling for evapotranspiration and root-zone soil moisture interference, the analysis revealed that under conditions of elevated RSM, the average increase in summer–autumn GPP (SAGPP) was 0.249, significantly surpassing the increase observed under high-PRE conditions (−0.088). Areas dominated by RSM accounted for 62.13% of the total study region. Furthermore, examination of the aridity gradient demonstrated that the predominance of RSM intensified with increasing aridity, reaching its peak influence in extremely arid zones. This research provides a quantitative assessment of the differential impacts of RSM and PRE on vegetation productivity in China’s arid and semi-arid areas, thereby offering a vital theoretical foundation for improving predictions of terrestrial carbon sink dynamics under future climate change scenarios. Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease that can greatly affect quality of life in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Nutritional supplements are increasingly used for KOA due to their low risk, but direct comparative evidence on their efficacy and safety remains scarce. This study aimed to systematically compare the effectiveness and safety of seven common nutritional supplements for KOA. Methods: A systematic review and network meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Embase, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were searched through December 2024 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating use of eggshell membrane, vitamin D, Boswellia, curcumin, ginger, krill oil, or collagen, versus placebo, in adults with KOA. Primary outcomes included changes in scores for WOMAC pain, stiffness and function, and pain visual analog scale (VAS). Adverse events were also assessed. Bayesian network meta-analyses estimated ranking probabilities for each intervention. Results: In total, 39 RCTs (42 studies; 4599 patients) were included. Compared with placebo, Boswellia showed significant improvements in WOMAC pain (mean difference [MD] = 10.58, 95% CI: 6.45 to 14.78, p < 0.05), stiffness (MD = 9.47, 95% CI: 6.39 254 to 12.74, p < 0.05), function (MD = 14.00, 95% CI: 7.74 to 20.21, p < 0.05), and VAS pain (MD = 17.26, 95% CI: 8.06 to 26.52, p < 0.05). Curcumin, collagen, ginger, and krill oil also demonstrated benefits in some outcomes. No supplement was associated with increased adverse events compared to placebo. Bayesian rankings indicated Boswellia had the highest probability of being most effective for pain and stiffness, with krill oil and curcumin showing potential for function improvement. Conclusions: Nutritional supplements, particularly Boswellia, appear to be effective and well-tolerated for improving KOA symptoms and function. These results suggest that certain supplements may be useful as part of non-pharmacological KOA management. Monitoring the activity index of animals is crucial for assessing their welfare and behavior patterns. However, traditional methods for calculating the activity index, such as pixel intensity differencing of entire frames, are found to suffer from significant interference and noise, leading to inaccurate results. These classical approaches also do not support group or individual tracking in a user-friendly way, and no open-access platform exists for non-technical researchers. This study introduces an open-source web-based platform that allows researchers to calculate the activity index from top-view videos by selecting individual or group animals. It integrates Segment Anything Model2 (SAM2), a promptable deep learning segmentation model, to track animals without additional training or annotation. The platform accurately tracked Cobb 500 male broilers from weeks 1 to 7 with a 100% success rate, IoU of 92.21% ± 0.012, precision of 93.87% ± 0.019, recall of 98.15% ± 0.011, and F1 score of 95.94% ± 0.006, based on 1157 chickens. Statistical analysis showed that tracking 80% of birds in week 1, 60% in week 4, and 40% in week 7 was sufficient (r ≥ 0.90; p ≤ 0.048) to represent the group activity in respective ages. This platform offers a practical, accessible solution for activity tracking, supporting animal behavior analytics with minimal effort. Full article

Effectiveness of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine in Extended Age Groups: A Real-World Analysis Based on the Korean HPV Cohort Study

Background/Objectives: This study evaluated the real-world effectiveness of prophylactic Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Korean women aged over 26 years, focusing on its impact on persistent HPV infection and disease progression. Methods: This multicenter prospective study analyzed data from the Korea HPV Cohort (2010–2021). After applying exclusion criteria, the final analytical cohort included 1,231 women aged ≥ 27 years with cytologic findings of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance/low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and HPV infection. Propensity score matching was used to compare vaccinated (n = 340) and unvaccinated (n = 891) participants. After matching, 273 vaccinated and 273 unvaccinated individuals were included in the final analysis. The primary outcomes were persistent HPV infection and progression to biopsy-confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+). Logistic and Cox regression models were employed, with additional age-stratified analyses. Results: Among women aged 27–39 years, vaccination was significantly associated with a 54% reduction in the odds of persistent HPV infection (odds ratio = 0.46; 95% CI: 0.22–0.96; p = 0.040). In the full cohort, vaccinated participants had a 62% lower risk of progression to CIN2+ compared with unvaccinated participants (hazard ratio = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.18–0.81; p = 0.011). Body mass index had a notable impact on HPV persistence in HPV 16/18 genotype groups. Conclusions: HPV vaccination effectively reduced persistent infection and progression to CIN2+ in Korean women, particularly those vaccinated before age 40. These findings support the age-extended HPV vaccination policies in South Korea. Full article

Maintaining well integrity is essential in the oil and gas industry to prevent environmental hazards, operational risks, and economic losses. Cement bond log (CBL) tools are essential in evaluating cement bonding and ensuring wellbore stability. This study presents a patent landscape review of CBL technologies, based on 3473 patent documents from the Lens.org database. After eliminating duplicates and irrelevant entries, 167 granted patents were selected for in-depth analysis. These were categorized by technology type (wave, electrical, radiation, neutron, and other tools) and by material focus (formation, casing, cement, and borehole fluid). The findings reveal a dominant focus on formation evaluation (59.9%) and a growing reliance on wave-based (22.2%) and other advanced tools (25.1%), indicating a shift toward high-precision diagnostics. Geographically, 75% of granted patents were filed through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and 97.6% were held by companies, underscoring the dominance of corporate innovation and the minimal presence of academia and individuals. The review also identifies notable patents that reflect significant technical innovations and discusses their role in advancing diagnostic capabilities. These insights emphasize the need for broader collaboration and targeted research to advance well integrity technologies in line with industry goals for operational performance and safety. Lexicon-Based Random Substitute and Word-Variant Voting Models for Detecting Textual Adversarial Attacks

Adversarial attacks in Natural Language Processing (NLP) present a critical challenge, particularly in sentiment analysis, where subtle input modifications can significantly alter model predictions. In search of more robust defenses against adversarial attacks on sentimental analysis, this research work introduces two novel defense mechanisms: the Lexicon-Based Random Substitute Model (LRSM) and the Word-Variant Voting Model (WVVM). LRSM employs randomized substitutions from a dataset-specific lexicon to generate diverse input variations, disrupting adversarial strategies by introducing unpredictability. Unlike traditional defenses requiring synonym dictionaries or precomputed semantic relationships, LRSM directly substitutes words with random lexicon alternatives, reducing overhead while maintaining robustness. Notably, LRSM not only neutralizes adversarial perturbations but occasionally surpasses the original accuracy by correcting inherent model misclassifications. Building on LRSM, WVVM integrates LRSM, Frequency-Guided Word Substitution (FGWS), and Synonym Random Substitution and Voting (RS&V) in an ensemble framework that adaptively combines their outputs. Logistic Regression (LR) emerged as the optimal ensemble configuration, leveraging its regularization parameters to balance the contributions of individual defenses. WVVM consistently outperformed standalone defenses, demonstrating superior restored accuracy and F1 scores across adversarial scenarios. The proposed defenses were evaluated on two well-known sentiment analysis benchmarks: the IMDB Sentiment Dataset and the Yelp Polarity Dataset. The IMDB dataset, comprising 50,000 labeled movie reviews, and the Yelp Polarity dataset, containing labeled business reviews, provided diverse linguistic challenges for assessing adversarial robustness. Both datasets were tested using 4000 adversarial examples generated by established attacks, including Probability Weighted Word Saliency, TextFooler, and BERT-based Adversarial Examples. WVVM and LRSM demonstrated superior performance in restoring accuracy and F1 scores across both datasets, with WVVM excelling through its ensemble learning framework. LRSM improved restored accuracy from 75.66% to 83.7% when compared to the second-best individual model, RS&V, while the Support Vector Classifier WVVM variation further improved restored accuracy to 93.17%. Logistic Regression WVVM achieved an F1 score of 86.26% compared to 76.80% for RS&V. These findings establish LRSM and WVVM as robust frameworks for defending against adversarial text attacks in sentiment analysis. Full article

Schistosoma mansoni infection is associated with hepatic inflammation and fibrosis, but its systemic metabolic effects remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate changes in the serum lipidomic profile associated with S. mansoni infection and parasite load in individuals from an endemic area. This cross-sectional analysis was nested within a longitudinal cohort study conducted in northeastern Brazil. Parasitological diagnosis and quantification were performed using the Kato–Katz technique. A total of 45 individuals were selected and divided into three groups: high parasite load (HL), low parasite load (LL), and uninfected controls (NegE). Serum samples were analyzed using mass-spectrometry-based lipidomics. The most abundant lipid subclasses across all groups were phosphatidylcholines (PC), triacylglycerols (TAG), and phosphatidylethanolamines (PE). However, individuals in the HL group exhibited distinct lipidomic profiles, with increased levels of specific phosphatidylinositols (PI) and reduced levels of certain TAG species compared to the NegE group. These changes may reflect host–parasite interactions and immune–metabolic alterations driven by intense infection. Our findings suggest that S. mansoni infection, particularly at higher parasite burdens, can influence the host’s serum lipid profile and may contribute to metabolic disturbances in endemic populations.
