Plant-derived sweet proteins are promising low-calorie natural sweeteners that may reduce dietary sugar intake and prevent non-communicable diseases. Although seven have been identified—thaumatin, miraculin, monellin, mabinlin, brazzein, pentadin, and curculin (neoculin)—only thaumatin is currently approved as a food additive. The development of others requires comprehensive safety assessments, particularly regarding allergenicity. This systematic review aims to investigate and synthesize allergenicity assessment methods (in silico, in vitro, in vivo, and clinical) applied to these seven sweet proteins. The literature searches were conducted following PRISMA guidelines across Scopus, PubMed, and Wiley Online Library databases, up to 30 November 2025, with no time restrictions. The risk of bias in selected studies was evaluated using GRADE. After the selection process, 14 out of 2634 studies met the inclusion criteria. Thaumatin, miraculin, monellin, and brazzein emerged as the most extensively studied proteins. In silico approaches (sequence and structural homology) and in vitro assays (digestibility and cell-based methods) were the most commonly employed methods. In contrast, in vivo studies (animal models) and clinical evaluations (skin prick tests, oral food challenges) were rarely reported. Allergenicity studies on pentadin, mabinlin, and curculin (neoculin) are limited, indicating a research gap that requires further study to support regulatory approval and consumer acceptance. Purpose: This study provides a critical examination of the literature on applying artificial intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) in restaurant settings and related foodservice operations. It focuses on how AI and XE influence consumer nutrition awareness and decision-making about food choices, and their implications for customer satisfaction, loyalty, and service delivery in foodservice environments. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopts a systematic literature review (SLR) approach following the PRISMA method. An initial search identified over 3900 academic papers published between 2016 and 2025. Studies were selected on the basis of predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 26 peer-reviewed articles were analyzed. The review provides a conceptual synthesis and develops propositions for practical applications and future research directions. Findings: The review reveals a shift from static systems that rely on optimization, toward adaptive and user-centered solutions that are behavior-oriented. AI applications predominate in the case of calorie tracking, personalized recommendations, and menu planning. Though deployment of XR technologies (e.g., AR and VR) is less prevalent, they offer potential for immersive, and real-time interventions. A key distinction emerges between studies demonstrating empirical effectiveness (e.g., improved understanding and healthier choices) and those focused on technical and/or conceptual developments. To date, there has been limited validation of behavioral impacts in foodservice settings. Originality: This study offers a theory-informed conceptualization of AI and XR applications in restaurant and foodservice contexts by integrating three perspectives: hospitality (menus and dining experience), nutrition (dietary awareness and healthier choices), and human–technology interaction (technology acceptance and user engagement). The study reconceptualizes AI- and XR-enabled systems as behavioral intervention tools and outlines a focused research agenda for advancing nutritional communication in foodservice environments. This study examines the roles of startup hubs within the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) and their implications for cultural innovation and tourism in European cities. Despite the growing importance of CCIs in urban development and destination branding, few studies have explored the organisational, social and communicative dynamics of cultural startup hubs. To address this gap, a comparative mixed-methods approach is applied to analyse 91 incubated startups in three European hubs: 104factory (Paris, France), Makerversity (London, UK) and A Lab (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). This study integrates structural variables (sustainability and institutionalisation), social variables (gender representation in leadership) and communication variables (activity and engagement on Instagram). The results reveal distinct organisational models, from highly institutionalised structures to more flexible, community-oriented approaches, with notable differences in terms of sustainability and gender distribution. In terms of communication, greater engagement is associated with content focused on community, identity and collective creativity, rather than promotional strategies. These findings highlight the role of startup hubs as hybrid intermediaries that not only support cultural entrepreneurship, but also contribute to the symbolic positioning and tourist appeal of the cities in which they are located. This study offers theoretical and practical insights for the development of more inclusive, sustainable and effectively communicative cultural ecosystems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a multisystemic disease with overlapping metabolic, renal, and cardiovascular effects. Within the Diabetic@ project, which aims to characterize individuals with T2DM using real-world data extracted from electronic health records (EHRs), this substudy sought to develop a predictive model for two-year heart failure (HF) risk. Methods: Multicenter, retrospective study including T2DM individuals across eight Spanish hospitals (2013–2018). Data were extracted exclusively from EHRs’ unstructured free text using clinical natural language processing (cNLP) and mapped to SNOMED CT. At inclusion, individuals were categorized as having or not prevalent HF (pHF). Predictive modeling was performed in non-pHF to assess two-year risk of developing HF, termed incident HF (iHF). Logistic regression (LR), decision trees, random forest, and XGBoost were compared, selecting for accuracy and interpretability. Results: Of 588,756 individuals with T2DM, 84,197 (14.3%) had pHF. Among non-pHF, 353,371 (60%) were used for model development (90.7% training, 9.3% validation). iHF occurred in 13.6% of the training set and 11.4% of the validation set. Ischemic heart disease was present in 16.2% overall, 37.9% in pHF, and 12.6% in non-pHF. Glycosylated hemoglobin data was rarely reported (<15%). LR achieved the best performance (AUC-ROC 0.73) using 27 predictors. Reduced 12- and clinically refined 9-predictor models performed similarly, with the latter implemented in a web-based tool. Conclusions: Unstructured data from EHRs enabled development of a two-year HF risk model for individuals with T2DM, underscoring the potential of cNLP for risk stratification across the cardiovascular–renal–metabolic spectrum. Hungarian teachers’ reform priorities remain insufficiently mapped, despite their central role in shaping feasible, evidence-based educational change. In a cross-sectional study with 1254 kindergarten, primary, and secondary teachers across Hungary (May 2025), we elicited and analyzed open-ended written responses in which participants identified their top three required reforms. Responses were segmented and coded into 18 mutually exclusive categories via a validated codebook, and prevalence was calculated using respondent-normalized weights. We then examined demographic, well-being, and personality correlates of reform priorities using χ2 tests, Mann–Whitney tests, and multivariable logistic models with Benjamini–Hochberg false discovery correction. Teachers most frequently prioritized competency development and pedagogical reform, followed by curriculum flexibility and system governance. Reform priorities were not random: female teachers were substantially more likely to prioritize inclusion and SEN support, while male teachers more often prioritized governance and depoliticization; older age predicted governance priorities. Lower educational system satisfaction robustly predicted prioritizing curriculum reform, autonomy, and governance restructuring, and anxiety and depression were positively related to curriculum concerns. Conscientiousness predicted prioritizing salary and material recognition. The results indicate that teachers’ reform demands function as systematic, psychologically grounded signals that can guide more targeted, teacher-centerd educational policy in Hungary. Full article

This paper provides a systematic review of recent applications of NLP methods for analyzing traffic crash reports, with a focus on estimating crash severity, crash duration, and crash causation. The review covers prior research using probabilistic topic modeling methods such as LDA, STM, and hierarchical Dirichlet processes in addition to research using transformer-based language models, which include encoder-based models like BERT and PubMedBERT as well as decoder-based models like GPT, GPT2, ChatGPT, GPT-3, and LLaMA. The review starts with a systematic literature selection process with predefined inclusion criteria. We categorize the reviewed studies into the following application areas: crash severity prediction, risk factor identification in crashes, and road safety analysis. The results show several complementary advantages of using different NLP techniques to achieve different analytical goals. Topic models allow for interpretable and exploratory pattern discovery, while encoder models are well-suited for structured prediction problems. Decoder models have the additional flexibility to perform zero-shot and few-shot reasoning, which makes them useful for reasoning about under-sampled or under-reported data. Across the literature, hybrid methods that combine text and structured data outperform individual methods in terms of prediction accuracy and broad applicability. Challenges across the literature include class imbalance, lack of standardization in preprocessing and evaluation methods, and the tradeoff between prediction accuracy and interpretability of prediction models. These findings highlight the importance of aligning model selection with data availability and operational constraints, pointing toward future research directions in hybrid modeling frameworks, standardized evaluation protocols, and real-world deployment of NLP-driven traffic safety systems. Introduction: This systematic review examines the association between ultraprocessed food (UPF) intake and cognitive and executive function in adults. Given the global rise in overweight and obesity and the increasing consumption of UPFs, understanding their potential impact on brain health is of growing importance. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, EBSCO, and Scopus databases following PRISMA guidelines. Fourteen studies met inclusion criteria, encompassing cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental designs. Risk of bias was assessed using the National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment Tool. Results: The majority of studies (78.5%) reported a significant association between higher UPF consumption and poorer cognitive outcomes, including deficits in memory, executive function, and global cognition. Longitudinal studies consistently demonstrated that increased UPF intake is linked to accelerated cognitive decline and a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, particularly in middle-aged and older adults. In contrast, cross-sectional findings were more heterogeneous, and evidence in younger populations remains limited and inconclusive. Conclusions: Overall, the findings suggest that high UPF consumption may be a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. However, methodological variability and the predominance of observational studies highlight the need for further longitudinal and experimental research to clarify causal mechanisms. Full article

A recurring question in contemporary society is: How can one survive on a single income? Escalating socioeconomic challenges worldwide are pushing many households beyond their financial comfort zones. As a coping strategy, many individuals have adopted side hustles, income-generating activities pursued alongside full-time employment. However, a crucial question arises: do side hustles come at the expense of primary employment, particularly in terms of employee commitment and workplace loyalty? This study examined the moderating role of work–life integration in the relationship between side hustles, employee commitment, and workplace attachment. The unit of analysis consisted of academic and support staff at South African higher education institutions. Primary data were collected through a survey of a stratified random sample of 300 employees, and the data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The findings support that side hustles offer meaningful opportunities to enhance individual livelihoods by mitigating the impact of declining income levels. Moreover, the results indicate that flexible work arrangements are critical for employees engaged in hustle, as such flexibility strengthens organisational commitment and workplace attachment. The study recommends adopting a humanistic management approach that promotes boundaryless jobs, thereby fostering employee commitment and workplace attachment through an inclusive, supportive, and empowering work environment. The Agglomeration Scale Within Urban Agglomerations and Energy Intensity: Empirical Evidence from China

Urban agglomerations have become the dominant spatial platform of urbanization, regional coordination, and economic transformation in China. Yet whether the expansion of agglomeration scale at the urban-agglomeration level alleviates or intensifies energy use remains insufficiently understood. Extending the scale of analysis from individual cities to integrated urban agglomerations, this study investigates 64 cities in four major Chinese urban agglomerations, including Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and Chengdu–Chongqing, over the period 2006–2023. Using panel data models, this study examines the impact of the scale agglomeration within urban agglomeration on urban energy intensity. The results show that the overall agglomeration scale generated by urban agglomeration formation significantly suppresses energy intensity while indicating a robust energy-saving effect: every 10% increase in agglomeration scale is associated with a decline of approximately 0.0893 million tons of standard coal per CNY 100 million of GDP. This finding remains stable after addressing endogeneity concerns and performing a series of robustness checks. Mechanism analyses further suggest that this effect operates primarily through talent agglomeration, technological progress, and public transportation expansion. In addition, the energy-saving effect is more pronounced in smaller cities, cities with lower administrative rank, cities with weaker factor mobility, and cities characterized by poorer air quality but stronger public environmental attention. These findings contribute to the literature on urban agglomeration and green development by showing that the agglomeration scale within urban agglomerations can generate inclusive energy-efficiency gains, especially for relatively disadvantaged cities, thereby offering important implications for spatial governance and low-carbon transition in rapidly urbanizing economies. This study examined a maker-based approach to sustainable digital education in physical education (PE) through a laser-shooting program implemented over a three-year period (2022–2024). While prior studies have largely focused on short-term maker-based PE interventions, less is known about how such practices are refined, stabilized, and diffused across school contexts over time. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from lesson plans, instructional artifacts, implementation records, field notes, and semi-structured interviews with five PE teachers, and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings suggest that, according to teachers’ accounts and classroom documentation, the program was perceived to reduce barriers to participation, diversify student roles, and improve instructional feasibility in indoor PE settings. Over time, the program evolved into a stable and adaptable instructional approach aligned with sustainable digital education, integrating physical computing into embodied learning environments. Diffusion occurred through teacher agency within informal professional networks and institutional training contexts. These findings highlight the potential of maker-based PE as a sustainable digital education approach that may support context-responsive participation, instructional adaptability, and professionally scalable innovation in school PE, with possible relevance for inclusive physical education contexts. This study investigates the rapid, often uncontrolled urban expansion in Khenchela, a medium-sized city in Algeria’s eastern High Plains, and its profound environmental repercussions amid semi-arid fragility. Drawing on sustainable urban development and resilience frameworks, it dissects pressures such as green space reduction (from 45 ha in 1998 to 33 ha in 2023, dropping per capita from 6.1 m2 to 3 m2 below WHO standards), water scarcity with 35% leakage losses waste mismanagement, informal settlements on hazardous lands, air/soil pollution, and climate vulnerabilities like heat waves and flooding. Employing a mixed-methods approach documentary analysis of (MPLUUP, LUP and MDP) plans, GIS cartography of spatial evolution (2000–2025), statistical demographics, field observations, and institutional critiques, the research exposes governance gaps: fragmented coordination, weak ecological integration, and resource shortages. It reveals socio-spatial disparities across functional zones, underscoring the need for adaptive, participatory strategies that promote polycentric and compact urban forms, enhanced biodiversity, efficient infrastructure, and inclusive governance to strengthen urban resilience. Background/Objectives: Adults with intellectual disability are known to experience complex health needs, including an elevated presence of chronic conditions. Cardiovascular risk factors are a concern, yet the evidence base is fragmented, and the scope and focus of current research are not well understood. Methods: We conducted a scoping review to map the existing evidence on cardiovascular risk factors among adults with intellectual disability. The review included studies reporting on risk factor prevalence as well as participant characteristics (ethnicity, living arrangements, age, sex, and type of disability). Cardiovascular-related outcomes were extracted to clarify the health disparities documented in this population. Results: Searches of seven databases for studies published from 2013 onward yielded 15,598records, of which 85 met the inclusion criteria. Evidence was dominated by cross-sectional studies, with a few randomized controlled trials. Hypertension, Type 2 diabetes and obesity were commonly reported. Patterns appeared to reflect lifestyle, medication effects, genetic syndromes—particularly Down syndrome and Prader–Willi syndrome—and the severity of the disability. A notable share of the studies originated from the United Kingdom and the United States. Findings reveal a complex cardiovascular risk profile, emphasizing the need for tailored prevention and management. Conclusions: Adults with intellectual disability face a substantial burden of cardiovascular risk factors. Evidence on effective interventions remains limited, highlighting a need for targeted, evidence-informed approaches to improve cardiovascular health and long-term outcomes. Full article

Digital Citizenship and Community Belonging Among University Students: The Mediating Role of Sustainable Education

The intersection of digital citizenship, sustainable education, and community belonging represents an emerging yet underexplored area of inquiry, particularly within Arab higher education contexts where institutional digitalization is accelerating alongside distinct sociocultural expectations around academic identity. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of sustainable education in the relationship between digital citizenship and community belonging among Egyptian university students. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed with a main sample of 819 university students. Participants completed three validated instruments: the Revised Digital Citizenship Scale, the Sustainable Education Scale, and the Where I Belong Survey. Mediation analysis was conducted using Hayes’ PROCESS macro with 5000 bootstrap resamples. Results reveal that digital citizenship is significantly and positively associated with both sustainable education and community belonging. Sustainable education, in turn, significantly predicts community belonging after controlling for digital citizenship, with the indirect effect accounting for approximately 38% of the total effect, consistent with partial mediation. These findings demonstrate that responsible digital engagement is associated with community belonging not only directly but also in a pattern statistically consistent with partial mediation through sustainability-oriented values including equity, inclusiveness, and democratic participation. These findings suggest theoretically informed directions for future intervention design, wherein integrating sustainable education principles into digital learning environments may warrant empirical investigation as a potential approach to cultivating ethically grounded, socially cohesive academic communities. Predictors of First Anti-TNF Treatment Failure in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Single-Center Cohort Study

Introduction: Despite proven efficacy of anti-TNF agents in inflammatory bowel disease, primary non-response affects up to one-third of patients, while secondary loss of response occurs at 13–21% per patient-year, often requiring dose optimization or switching to alternative advanced therapies. Methods: The present single-center cohort study at the University Hospital of Ioannina included biologic-naïve patients receiving anti-TNF therapy as their first biologic treatment. First anti-TNF treatment failure was defined as discontinuation due to persistent IBD activity despite maximal dose optimization (infliximab 10 mg/kg every 4 weeks, adalimumab 40 mg weekly). Patients with measurable anti-drug antibodies prior to anti-TNF dose intensification or discontinuation were excluded. Of 528 anti-TNF-treated patients, 286 (173 with CD, 113 with UC) met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final statistical analysis. Results: Anti-TNF failure occurred in 32.7% of Crohn’s (CD) and 32.9% of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. Multivariable Cox regression identified complicated phenotype (stricturing or/and penetrating CD; HR = 1.9, p = 0.032) and concomitant corticosteroid use at anti-TNF initiation (HR = 2.03, p = 0.012) as independent predictors of anti-TNF failure in CD. Age at CD diagnosis showed a trend for statistical significance (HR = 1.02, p = 0.061), and after stratification, age at diagnosis ≥ 40 years conferred higher risk (HR = 1.93, p = 0.016), alongside persistent effects of complicated phenotype (HR = 1.83, p = 0.027) and corticosteroid use (HR = 2.01, p = 0.013). In UC patients, female sex predicted anti-TNF failure (HR = 2.13, p = 0.025). IBD-related bowel resection occurred in 26.6% of patients with CD and in 5.3% of patients with UC. Conclusions: Anti-TNF failure remains common despite optimization. Identifying immunogenicity-independent predictors may enable personalized treatment strategies and improve outcomes. Full article

Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a non-pharmacological intervention for managing pain and anxiety during medical procedures. This study presents a systematic review with complementary bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature on the clinical effectiveness of VR in healthcare settings. A structured search was conducted across five databases (Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE), identifying 627 records, of which 26 studies met the inclusion criteria. Data were extracted on study design, population, type of intervention, and clinical outcomes related to pain and anxiety. Most included studies reported reductions in perceived pain and/or anxiety when VR was used as an adjunctive intervention, particularly in pediatric and procedural contexts. However, findings were heterogeneous in terms of study design, VR modalities, and outcome measures, limiting quantitative synthesis. The bibliometric analysis indicates growing research interest, with a strong focus on clinical outcomes, while evidence related to implementation and healthcare system integration remains limited. Overall, VR appears to be a promising complementary tool for improving patient experience during medical procedures. However, further high-quality studies with standardized methodologies are needed to establish its effectiveness and facilitate future meta-analyses. Full article
