Background/Objectives: Cancer is a complex disease that affects patients’ nutritional and psychological status. This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of patients diagnosed with lung and gastrointestinal system cancers and evaluate its association with anthropometric measurements, nutrient intake, and psychological symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 180 patients with lung and gastrointestinal system cancers. Data were collected face-to-face by a questionnaire that included the Subjective Global Assessment-(SGA), Cachexia Assessment Criteria, 24 h Food Consumption Record, and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised-(SCL-90-R). Some anthropometric measurements were collected. Results: Body Mass Index (BMI) was found to be significantly lower (p < 0.001) in SGA-B (moderately malnourished) and SGA-C (severely malnourished) compared to those in SGA-A (well-nourished). The calf circumference was significantly lower (p = 0.002) in SGA-C compared to those in SGA-A and SGA-B. The mean SGA scores were found to be higher in cachexia-diagnosed participants (p < 0.001). The energy intake of SGA-C was significantly lower than SGA-A and SGA-B (p < 0.001). In addition, the energy intake of SGA-B was lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). The protein intake of SGA-C was lower than SGA-A and SGA-B (p < 0.001). The protein intake of SGA-B was lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). Regarding the intake of vitamins A, C, E, B1, and B6 and carotene, folate, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc, SGA-B and SGA-C were significantly lower than SGA-A (p < 0.001). Additionally, only phobic anxiety was found to be significantly higher in SGA-B than in SGA-A (p:0.024). Conclusions: As the level of malnutrition increased, a reduction in some nutrient intake and anthropometric measurements was observed. No significant difference was found in any psychological symptoms except phobic anxiety. With this in mind, it is important that every cancer patient, regardless of the stage of the disease, is referred to a dietitian from the time of diagnosis. Full article

Background/Objectives: Enterococci, particularly Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, are Gram-positive cocci that can cause severe infections in hospitalized patients. The rise of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-variable enterococci (VVE) poses significant challenges in healthcare settings due to their resistance to multiple antibiotics. Methods: We conducted a point prevalence survey (PPS) to assess the prevalence of VRE and VVE colonization in hospitalized patients. Rectal swabs were collected from 160 patients and analyzed using molecular assays (MAs) and culture. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and core-genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) were performed to identify the genetic diversity. Results: Of the 160 rectal swabs collected, 54 (33.7%) tested positive for the vanA and/or vanB genes. Culture-based methods identified 47 positive samples (29.3%); of these, 44 isolates were identified as E. faecium and 3 as E. faecalis. Based on the resistance profiles, 35 isolates (74.5%) were classified as VRE, while 12 (25.5%) were classified as VVE. WGS and cgMLST analyses identified seven clusters of E. faecium, with sequence type (ST) 80 being the most prevalent. Various resistance genes and virulence factors were identified, and this study also highlighted intra- and inter-ward transmission of VRE strains. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the potential for virulence and resistance of both the VRE and VVE strains, and they highlight the importance of effective infection control measures to prevent their spread. VVE in particular should be carefully monitored as they often escape detection. Integrating molecular data with clinical information will hopefully enhance our ability to predict and prevent future VRE infections. Full article

Background: With China’s rapidly aging population, frailty has become a growing concern among older adults. Physical activity (PA) is known to mitigate frailty-related decline, yet few studies have examined these associations longitudinally. Methods: Using five waves (2011–2020) of CHARLS data, we analyzed Chinese adults aged 60+ to assess the association between frailty—measured by a frailty index (FI)—and PA across various types (light, moderate, vigorous, total, and leisure). A generalized linear mixed-effects model was used, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors. Results: All PA types were significantly associated with lower odds of concurrent frailty, including light (OR = 0.37), moderate (OR = 0.37), vigorous (OR = 0.40), total (OR = 0.23), and leisure PA (OR = 0.56). Lagged PA also predicted reduced frailty risk over time, except for light PA. Conclusion: Regular PA is linked to a lower risk of frailty among older Chinese adults. These findings underscore the importance of sustained PA as a strategy to promote healthy aging and inform public health interventions for this population. Full article

The impact of Oedema Disease produced by Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) in swine is increasing in some production countries due to increasing limitations on treatment with antimicrobials and zinc oxide, either because of the increased prevalence of multi-resistant strains or because of legal restrictions. The main pathological effect of Shiga toxin 2e is represented by damage to the endothelial cells of the blood vessel walls, leading to liquid extravasation and oedema formation in multiple tissues. These oedemas are generally easily identifiable in acute clinical cases. However, disease caused by Shiga toxin can occur without any externally visible oedema in the pigs, as observed in the subclinical presentation of Oedema Disease. It also causes productive losses, so it is important to identify and/or diagnose cases to set up control measures in order to optimize production and health. This article includes a comprehensive review of lesions and signs caused by Shiga toxin toxicosis in pigs, as well as other insights about the aetiology and epidemiology of STEC in pigs, and the effect of Shiga toxin recombinant toxoid vaccines in reducing these clinical and subclinical signs under field conditions. The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Among Adults in the United States

Background/Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease. It has known multifactorial pathophysiology, but the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on the rising prevalence of MASLD is poorly understood. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study to examine the influence of SDOH on MASLD using nationwide data from the 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study. Methods: We identified participants with MASLD based on liver ultrasound-based controlled attenuation parameter measurements consistent with diagnostic guidelines. We then used logistic regression models to examine associations between SDOH variables and MASLD, with a pre-specified focus on education and income, sequentially adjusting for sociodemographic factors, medical comorbidities, and other SDOH. Results: Our study found that higher education (odds ratio [OR] 0.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.62–0.97, p = 0.024) but not higher income (OR 1.12, 95% CI 0.91–1.37, p = 0.3) was associated with lower odds of MASLD in multivariable adjusted models. We also identified a significant interaction between education level and food security, as well as interactions between food security and other significant SDOH. In the stratified analyses, higher education was significantly associated with lower odds of MASLD among participants with food security (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.55–0.91, p = 0.007) but not among those with food insecurity (OR 1.26, 95% CI 0.76–2.11, p = 0.4). Conclusions: Our findings identify the potential impact of SDOH on odds of MASLD and suggest increased importance of food security relative to other SDOH. Full article

The present study analyzes individual differences in the facilitative processing of grammatical gender by heritage speakers of Spanish, asking whether these differences correlate with lexical proficiency. Results from an eye-tracking study in the Visual World Paradigm replicate prior findings that, as a group, heritage speakers of Spanish show facilitative processing of gender. Importantly, in a follow-up within-group analysis, we test whether three measures of lexical proficiency—oral picture-naming, verbal fluency, and LexTALE—predict individual performance. We find that lexical proficiency, as measured by LexTALE, predicts overall word recognition; however, we observe no effects of the other measures and no evidence that lexical proficiency modulates the strength of the facilitative effect. Our results highlight the importance of carefully selecting tools for proficiency assessment in experimental studies involving heritage speakers, underscoring that the absence of evidence for an effect of proficiency based on a single measure should not be taken as evidence of absence. Gender Differences in Visual Information Perception Ability: A Signal Detection Theory Approach

The accurate perception of visual stimuli in human–machine systems is crucial for improving system safety, usability, and task performance. The widespread adoption of digital technology has significantly increased the importance of visual interfaces and information. Therefore, it is essential to design visual interfaces and information with user characteristics in mind to ensure accurate perception of visual information. This study employed the Cognitive Perceptual Assessment for Driving (CPAD) to evaluate and compare gender differences in the ability to perceive visual signals within complex visual stimuli. The experimental setup included a computer with CPAD installed, along with a touch monitor, mouse, joystick, and keyboard. The participants included 11 male and 20 female students, with an average age of 22 for males and 21 for females. Prior to the experiment, participants were instructed to determine whether a signal stimulus was present: if a square, presented as the signal, was included in the visual stimulus, they moved the joystick to the left; otherwise, they moved it to the right. Each participant performed a total of 40 trials. The entire experiment was recorded on video to measure overall response times. The experiment measured the number of correct detections of signal presence, response times, the number of misses (failing to detect the signal when present), and false alarms (detecting the signal when absent). The analysis of experimental data revealed no significant differences in perceptual ability or response times for visual stimuli between genders. However, males demonstrated slightly superior perceptual ability and marginally shorter response times compared to females. Analyses of sensitivity and response bias, based on signal detection theory, also indicated a slightly higher perceptual ability in males. In conclusion, although these differences were not statistically significant, males demonstrated a slightly better perception ability for visual stimuli. The findings of this study can inform the design of information, user interfaces, and visual displays in human–machine systems, particularly in light of the recent trend of increased female participation in the industrial sector. Future research will focus on diverse types of visual information to further validate these findings. Full article

Morphine is an opioid extracted from the poppy plant and highly effective for moderate to severe pain management. Development of techniques to measure the concentration of this highly addictive drug in various matrices is very important. This work was aimed at the development of a sensitive electrochemical method for detection of morphine in wastewater. Molecularly imprinted (MIP) electrodes were made by the electro-polymerization process using pyrrole as a monomer. Electro-polymerization was performed on glassy carbon electrodes in the presence of morphine before the extraction of the entrapped morphine molecules. Various techniques were employed to monitor the polymerization and response of the fabricated electrodes toward morphine. These techniques included Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The morphine concentration was determined using SWV and CV by measuring the change in the redox peak current of [Fe(CN)6]−3/−4. These MIP electrode sensors were used to analyze morphine concentrations between 0 and 80.0 nM solution. The SWV showed a wider linear response region than CV. The detection limit using SWV was found to be 1.9 nM, while using CV, the detection limit was 2.75 nM. This MIP electrode sensor exhibited specificity when other closely related molecules were included and hence has potential as a cheap alternative technique for analysis of morphine. Full article

Consilience in Causation: Causal Emergence Is Found Across Measures of Causation

Causation is fundamentally important to science, and yet our understanding of causation is spread out across disparate fields, with different measures of causation having been proposed in philosophy, statistics, psychology, and other areas. Here we examined over a dozen popular measures of causation, all independently developed and widely used, originating in different fields. We identify a high degree of consilience, in that measures are often very similar, or indeed often rediscovered. This is because, we show, measures of causation are based on a small set of related “causal primitives”: sufficiency and necessity, or alternatively, determinism and degeneracy. These primitives are ways of capturing the degree of uncertainty inherent in causal relationships. In turn, these results help us understand the phenomenon whereby macroscales can reduce the uncertainty in causal relationships, leading to stronger causes at macroscales—an outcome known as “causal emergence”. First identified using the effective information and later the integrated information in model systems, causal emergence has been found in real data across the sciences since. But is it simply a quirk of these original measures? Using a simple model system, we demonstrate how the consilience of causation guarantees that causal emergence is commonly found in causal measures, identifying instances across all measures analyzed. This finding sets the mathematical understanding of emergence on firmer ground, opening the door for the detection of natural scales of causal interaction in complex systems, as well as assisting with scientific modeling and experimental interventions. With the expansion of muskmelon cultivation, manual pollination is increasingly inadequate for sustaining industry development. Therefore, the development of automatic pollination robots holds significant importance in improving pollination efficiency and reducing labor dependency. Accurate flower detection and localization is a key technology for enabling automated pollination robots. In this study, the YOLO-MDL model was developed as an enhancement of YOLOv7 to achieve real-time detection and localization of muskmelon flowers. This approach adds a Coordinate Attention (CA) module to focus on relevant channel information and a Contextual Transformer (CoT) module to leverage contextual relationships among input tokens, enhancing the model’s visual representation. The pollination robot converts the 2D coordinates into 3D coordinates using a depth camera and conducts experiments on real-time detection and localization of muskmelon flowers in a greenhouse. The YOLO-MDL model was deployed in ROS to control a robotic arm for automatic pollination, verifying the accuracy of flower detection and measurement localization errors. The results indicate that the YOLO-MDL model enhances AP and F1 scores by 3.3% and 1.8%, respectively, compared to the original model. It achieves AP and F1 scores of 91.2% and 85.1%, demonstrating a clear advantage in accuracy over other models. In the localization experiments, smaller errors were revealed in all three directions. The RMSE values were 0.36 mm for the X-axis, 1.26 mm for the Y-axis, and 3.87 mm for the Z-axis. The YOLO-MDL model proposed in this study demonstrates strong performance in detecting and localizing muskmelon flowers. Based on this model, the robot can execute more precise automatic pollination and provide technical support for the future deployment of automatic pollination robots in muskmelon cultivation. Line laser measurement, as a typical method of laser triangulation, makes the acquisition of 3D tooth-surface data more accurate, efficient, and informative. Thus, a line laser 3D measurement model of gears is established, and a specialized polyhedral artifact with specific geometric features is invented to determine the pose parameters of the line laser sensor in measuring space. Based on this, a single-spindle gear-measuring instrument is developed and a series of experimental studies are conducted for gears with different module and flank directions in this instrument, including profile deviation, helix deviation, pitch deviation, topological deviation, etc. A comparative experiment with traditional contact measurement methods validates the correctness of the methods mentioned in this paper for the accurate evaluation of tested gears. In further research, the mining and utilization of big data obtained from the line laser 3D measurement of gears will be an important topic. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented economic disruptions, raising critical questions about the resilience and adaptability of macroeconomic productivity across countries. This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on macroeconomic efficiency and productivity dynamics in 37 OECD countries using quarterly data from 2018Q1 to 2024Q4. By employing a Slack-Based Measure Data Envelopment Analysis (SBM-DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI), we decompose total factor productivity (TFP) into efficiency change (EC) and technological change (TC) across three periods: pre-pandemic, during-pandemic, and post-pandemic. Our framework incorporates both desirable (GDP) and undesirable outputs (inflation, unemployment, housing price inflation, and interest rate distortions), offering a multidimensional view of macroeconomic efficiency. Results show broad but uneven productivity gains, with technological progress proving more resilient than efficiency during the pandemic. Post-COVID recovery trajectories diverged, reflecting differences in structural adaptability and innovation capacity. Regression analysis reveals that stringent lockdowns in 2020 were associated with lower productivity in 2023–2024, while more adaptive policies in 2021 supported long-term technological gains. These findings highlight the importance of aligning crisis response with forward-looking economic strategies and demonstrate the value of DEA-based methods for evaluating macroeconomic performance beyond GDP. Background/Objectives: Sprinting is a fundamental locomotor skill and a key indicator of lower limb strength and anaerobic power in early childhood. The aim of the study was to examine possible differences in the step kinematic parameters and their contribution to sprint speed between children with different patterns of speed development. Methods: 65 prepubescent male and female track athletes (33 males and 32 females; 6.9 ± 0.8 years old) were examined in a maximal 15 m short sprint running test, where photocells measured time for each 5 m segment. At the last 5 m segment, step length, frequency, and velocity were evaluated via a video analysis method. The symmetry angle was calculated for the examined step kinematic parameters. Results: Based on the speed at the final 5 m segment of the test, two groups were identified, the maximum sprint phase (MAX) and the acceleration phase (ACC) group. Speed was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in ACC in the final 5 m segment, while there was a significant (p < 0.05) interrelationship between step length and frequency in ACC but not in MAX. No other differences were observed. Conclusions: The difference observed in the interrelationship between speed and step kinematic parameters between ACC and MAX highlights the importance of identifying the speed development pattern to apply individualized training stimuli for the optimization of training that can lead to better conditioning and wellbeing of children involved in sports with requirements for short-sprint actions. Modeling the Historical and Future Potential Global Distribution of the Pepper Weevil Anthonomus eugenii Using the Ensemble Approach

The pepper weevil Anthonomus eugenii is a devastating pest native to Central America that can cause severe damage to over 35 pepper varieties. Global trade in peppers has significantly increased the risk of its spread and expansion. Moreover, future climate change may add more uncertainty to its distribution, resulting in considerable ecological and economic damage globally. Therefore, we employed an ensemble model combining Random Forests and CLIMEX to predict the potential global distribution of A. eugenii in historical and future climate scenarios. The results indicated that the maximum temperature of the warmest month is an important variable affecting global A. eugenii distribution. Under the historical climate scenario, the potential global distribution of A. eugenii is concentrated in the Midwestern and Southern United States, Central America, the La Plata Plain, parts of the Brazilian Plateau, the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts, sub-Saharan Africa, Northern and Southern China, Southern India, Indochina Peninsula, and coastal area in Eastern Australia. Under future climate scenarios, suitable areas in the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and China, are projected to expand toward higher latitudes. In China, the number of highly suitable areas is expected to increase significantly, mainly in the south and north. Contrastingly, suitable areas in Central America, northern South America, the Brazilian Plateau, India, and the Indochina Peninsula will become less suitable. The total land area suitable for A. eugenii under historical and future low- and high-emission climate scenarios accounted for 73.12, 66.82, and 75.97% of the global land area (except for Antarctica), respectively. The high-suitability areas identified by both models decreased by 19.05 and 35.02% under low- and high-emission scenarios, respectively. Building on these findings, we inferred the future expansion trends of A. eugenii globally. Furthermore, we provide early warning of A. eugenii invasion and a scientific basis for its spread and outbreak, facilitating the development of effective quarantine and control measures. Biomarker Correlations in PTSD: IL-18, IRE1, pERK, and ATF6 via Courtauld Emotional Control Scale (CECS)

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic mental health condition resulting from exposure to traumatic events. It is associated with long-term neurobiological changes and disturbances in emotional regulation. Understanding the sociodemographic profiles, biomarkers, and emotional control in patients with PTSD helps to better comprehend the impact of the disorder on the body and its clinical course. An analysis of biomarkers such as Interleukin-18 (IL-18), Inositol-Requiring Enzyme 1 (IRE1), Phosphorylated Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase (pERK), and Activating Transcription Factor–6 (ATF-6) in PTSD patients with varying durations of illness (≤5 years and >5 years) and a control group without PTSD revealed significant differences. Patients with recently diagnosed PTSD (≤5 years) showed markedly elevated levels of inflammatory and cellular stress markers, indicating an intense neuroinflammatory response during the acute phase of the disorder. In the chronic PTSD group (>5 years), the levels of these biomarkers were lower than in the recently diagnosed group, but still significantly higher than in the control group. An opposite trend was observed regarding the suppression of negative emotions, as measured by the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale (CECS): individuals with chronic PTSD exhibited a significantly greater suppression of anger, depression, and anxiety than those with recent PTSD or healthy controls. Correlations between biomarkers were strongest in individuals with chronic PTSD, suggesting a persistent neuroinflammatory dysfunction. However, the relationships between biomarkers and emotional suppression varied depending on the stage of PTSD. These findings highlight the critical role of PTSD duration in shaping the neurobiological and emotional mechanisms of the disorder, which may have important implications for therapeutic strategies and patient monitoring.
