We review the general formalism of duality rotations for N-extended (super)conformal gauge multiplets of arbitrary (super)spin in four dimensions, with N0. Self-dual models for a vector field (N=0) and for N=1 and N=2 vector supermultiplets are naturally formulated on general (super)gravity backgrounds. For all other (super)spin values, the corresponding self-dual systems are realised on arbitrary conformally flat backgrounds. Every U(1) duality-invariant model is demonstrated to be self-dual with respect to a Legendre transformation. Methods are described to generate such self-dual models, including superconformal ones. We show that every model for self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics admits a higher-spin extension. Throughout this review, we make use of the formalism of conformal (super)space, which is the geometric setting to describe the gauge theory of the (super)conformal group. Full article

In this study, we investigate the properties of a thin accretion disk around a static spherically symmetric black hole in 4D Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet gravity, with an additional coupling constant, α, appearing in the spacetime metric. Using the Novikov–Thorne accretion disk model, we examine the thermal properties of the disk, finding that increasing α reduces the energy, angular momentum, and effective potential of a test particle orbiting the black hole. We demonstrate that α can mimic the spin of a Kerr black hole in general relativity up to a 0.23 M for the maximum value of α. Our analysis of the thermal radiation flux shows that larger α values increase the flux and shift its maximum towards the central black hole, while far from the black hole, the solution recovers the Schwarzschild limit. The impact of α on the radiative efficiency of the disk is weak but can slightly alter it. Assuming black-body radiation, we observe that the disk’s temperature peaks near its inner edge and is higher for larger α values. Lastly, the electromagnetic spectra reveal that the disk’s luminosity is lower in Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet gravity compared to general relativity, with the peak luminosity shifting toward higher frequencies, corresponding to the soft X-ray band as α increases. The Moyal-Higher-Spin (MHS) formalism, involving fields dependent on spacetime and auxiliary coordinates, is an approach to studying higher-spin (HS)-like models. To determine the particle content of the MHS model of the Yang–Mills type, we calculate the quartic Casimir operator for on-shell MHS fields, finding it to be generally non-vanishing, indicative of infinite/continuous spin degrees of freedom. We propose an on-shell basis for these infinite/continuous spin states. Additionally, we analyse the content of a massive MHS model. Full article

Accreting stellar-mass black holes represent unique laboratories for studying matter and radiation under the influence of extreme gravity. They are highly variable sources going through different accretion states, showing various components in their X-ray spectra from the thermal emission of the accretion disc dominating in the soft state to the up-scattered Comptonisation component from an X-ray corona in the hard state. X-ray polarisation measurements are particularly sensitive to the geometry of the X-ray scatterings and can thus constrain the orientation and relative positions of the innermost components of these systems. The IXPE mission has observed about a dozen stellar-mass black holes with masses up to 20 solar masses in X-ray binaries with different orientations and in various accretion states. The low-inclination sources in soft states have shown a low fraction of polarisation. On the other hand, several sources in soft and hard states have revealed X-ray polarisation higher than expected, which poses significant challenges for theoretical interpretation, with 4U 1630–47 being one of the most puzzling sources. IXPE has measured the spin of three black holes via the measurement of their polarisation properties in the soft emission state. In each of the three cases, the new results agree with the constraints from the spectral observations. The polarisation observations of the black hole X-ray transient Swift J1727.8–1613 across its entire outburst has revealed that the soft-state polarisation is much weaker than the hard-state polarisation. Remarkably, the observations furthermore show that the polarisation of the bright hard state and that of the 100 times less luminous dim hard state are identical within the accuracy of the measurement. For sources with a radio jet, the electric field polarisation tends to align with the radio jet, indicating the equatorial geometry of the X-ray corona, e.g., in the case of Cyg X–1. In the unique case of Cyg X–3, where the polarisation is perpendicular to the radio jet, the IXPE observations reveal the presence and geometry of obscuring material hiding this object from our direct view. The polarisation measurements acquired by the IXPE mission during its first 2.5 years have provided unprecedented insights into the geometry and physical processes of accreting stellar-mass black holes, challenging existing theoretical models and offering new avenues for understanding these extreme systems. Micro-Doppler time–frequency analysis has been regarded as an important parameter extraction method for conical micro-motion objects. However, the micro-Doppler effect caused by micro-motion can modulate the frequency of lidar echo, leading to coupling between structure and micro-motion parameters. Therefore, it is difficult to extract parameters for micro-motion cones. We propose a new method for parameter extraction by combining the range profile of a micro-motion cone and the micro-Doppler time–frequency spectrum. This method can effectively decouple and accurately extract the structure and the micro-motion parameters of cones. Compared with traditional time–frequency analysis methods, the accuracy of parameter extraction is higher, and the information is richer. Firstly, the range profile of the micro-motion cone was obtained by using an FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) lidar based on simulation. Secondly, quantitative analysis was conducted on the edge features of the range profile and the micro-Doppler time–frequency spectrum. Finally, the parameters of the micro-motion cone were extracted based on the proposed decoupling parameter extraction method. The results show that our method can effectively extract the cone height, the base radius, the precession angle, the spin frequency, and the gravity center height within the range of a lidar LOS (line of sight) angle from 20° to 65°. The average absolute percentage error can reach below 10%. The method proposed in this paper not only enriches the detection information regarding micro-motion cones, but also improves the accuracy of parameter extraction and establishes a foundation for classification and recognition. It provides a new technical approach for laser micro-Doppler detection in accurate recognition. Full article

In a previous work, we introduced, in the context of gravitational wave science, an initial study on an automated domain-decomposition approach for a reduced basis through hp-greedy refinement. The approach constructs local reduced bases of lower dimensionality than global ones, with the same or higher accuracy. These “light” local bases should imply both faster evaluations when predicting new waveforms and faster data analysis, particularly faster statistical inference (the forward and inverse problems, respectively). In this approach, however, we have previously found important dependence on several hyperparameters, which do not appear in a global reduced basis. This naturally leads to the problem of hyperparameter optimization (HPO), which is the subject of this paper. Here, we compare the efficiency of the Bayesian approach against grid and random searches, which are two order of magnitude slower. Then, we tackle the problem of HPO through Bayesian optimization. We find that, for the cases studied here of gravitational waves from the collision of two spinning but non-precessing black holes, for the same accuracy, local hp-greedy reduced bases with HPO have a lower dimensionality of up to 4×, depending on the desired accuracy. This factor should directly translate into a parameter estimation speedup in the context of reduced order quadratures, for instance. Such acceleration might help in the near real-time requirements for electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences. The code developed for this project is available open source from public repositories. This paper is an invited contribution to the Special Issue “Recent Advances in Gravity: A Themed Issue in Honor of Prof. Jorge Pullin on his 60th Anniversary”. Full article

Considering rotation-induced centrifugal stiffening, spin softening, and Coriolis effects, the reduced dynamic model of a rotating blade with a dovetail fixture is established in the ANSYS environment via the fixed-interface method for higher computational efficiency and lower memory consumption. Then some parameters such as rotating speed, friction factor, and stator blade number affecting the nonlinear vibration responses of the system under the combined actions of aerodynamic force, centrifugal force, and gravity are elaborately discussed. The results show that: (1) the contact-induced nonlinearity between the tenon and the mortise mainly results in the frequency multiplications of the aerodynamic excitation frequency; (2) a larger friction factor results in a lower magnitude of contact pressure and a higher resonance frequency, while a larger stator blade number results in a lower magnitude of the uniform and continuous contact pressure distribution; (3) the excitation of the resonant mode caused by the aerodynamic force is primarily characterized by the first-order bending mode of the system. The ability of bumblebee gravity models to explain dark energy, which is the phenomenon responsible for the universe’s observed accelerated expansion, is one of their most significant applications. An effect that causes faster expansion can be linked to how much the Lorentz symmetry of our universe is violated. Moreover, since we do not know what generates dark energy, the bumblebee gravity theory seems highly plausible. By utilizing the physical changes happening around a rotating bumblebee black hole (RBBH), we aim to obtain more specific details about the bumblebee black hole’s spacetime and our universe. However, as researched in the literature, slow-spinning RBBH (SRBBH) spacetime, which has a higher accuracy, will be considered instead of general RBBH. To this end, we first employ the Rindler–Ishak method (RIM), which enables us to study how light is bent in the vicinity of a gravitational lens. We evaluate the deflection angle of null geodesics in the equatorial plane of the SRBBH spacetime. Then, we use astrophysical data to see the effect of the Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) parameter on the bending angle of light for numerous astrophysical stars and black holes. We also acquire the analytical greybody factors (GFs) and quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the SRBBH. Finally, we visualize and discuss the results obtained in the conclusion section. Full article

Gravitational waves radiated during binary black hole coalescence are a perfect probe for studying the characteristics of strong gravity. Advanced techniques for creating numerical relativity substitute models for eccentric binary black hole systems are presumed to be crucial in existing and anticipated gravitational wave detectors. The imprint on the observation data of the gravitational wave emitted by the binary coalescence enhances two-body system studies. The aim of this study is to present an overview of the change in characteristic behaviors of hierarchical massive astrophysical objects merger, which are the databank of the early universe. We present results from numerical relativity simulations of an equal-mass and unequal mass nonspinning inspiral binary-black-hole system in the Post-Newtonian framework. We also consider the time evolution of eccentricity for an initial eccentric system. The eccentric Post-Newtonian equations are expanded in the form of the frequency related variable x=(Mω)2/3. The model is restricted to the (2, 2) spin-weighted spherical harmonic modes. We conclude that for higher eccentricity as well as mass ratio, there is higher oscillation in orbital radius and in eccentricity. Full article

Higher-spin diffeomorphisms are to higher-order differential operators what diffeomorphisms are to vector fields. Their rigorous definition is a challenging mathematical problem which might predate a better understanding of higher-spin symmetries and interactions. Several yes-go and no-go results on higher-spin diffeomorphisms are collected from the mathematical literature in order to propose a generalisation of the algebra of differential operators on which higher-spin diffeomorphisms are well-defined. Continuing the study of the Moyal Higher Spin Yang–Mills theory started in our previous paper we provide a detailed discussion of matter coupling and the corresponding tree-level amplitudes. We also start the investigation of the spectrum by expanding the master fields in terms of ordinary spacetime fields. We note that the spectrum can be consistent with unitarity while still preserving Lorentz covariance, albeit not in the usual way, but by employing an infinite-dimensional unitary representation of the Lorentz group. Scalar-tensor theories of gravity provide an intriguing and compelling approach to the dark energy problem. They have received increased attention in recent years thanks to a wealth of developments both in the theoretical and experimental sides. The class of models known as “degenerate” provide a particularly interesting proposal. These theories extend general relativity by a single degree of freedom, despite their equations of motion being higher than second order, a virtue made possible by the existence of an additional constraint that removes the would-be instability associated to a ghost. This note presents a brief overview of the problem of matter coupling in degenerate scalar-tensor theories. It has been remarked that the presence of matter fields minimally coupled to the metric tensor can obstruct the degeneracy constraint, thus impairing the consistency of the theory. We explain through some illustrative examples the precise ways in which the extra degree of freedom may reappear. This occurs in the Hamiltonian language through a loss of constraints, which may happen either when the kinetic matrix is not block-diagonal in the presence of matter fields, or when the matter sector itself has constraints. We next turn to the more physically relevant case of fermionic matter, and show that spin-1/2 fermions evade these issues and can thus be consistently coupled to degenerate theories of scalar-tensor gravity. The gravity model developed in the series of papers (Arbuzov et al. 2009; 2010), (Pervushin et al. 2012) is revisited. The model is based on the Ogievetsky theorem, which specifies the structure of the general coordinate transformation group. The theorem is implemented in the context of the Noether theorem with the use of the nonlinear representation technique. The canonical quantization is performed with the use of reparametrization-invariant time and Arnowitt– Deser–Misner foliation techniques. Basic quantum features of the models are discussed. We review various methods for finding exact solutions of higher spin theory in four dimensions, and survey the known exact solutions of (non)minimal Vasiliev’s equations. These include instanton-like and black hole-like solutions in (A)dS and Kleinian spacetimes. A perturbative construction of solutions with the symmetries of a domain wall is also described. Furthermore, we review two proposed perturbative schemes: one based on perturbative treatment of the twistor space field equations followed by inverting Fronsdal kinetic terms using standard Green’s functions; and an alternative scheme based on solving the twistor space field equations exactly followed by introducing the spacetime dependence using perturbatively defined gauge functions. Motivated by the need to provide a higher spin invariant characterization of the exact solutions, aspects of a proposal for a geometric description of Vasiliev’s equation involving an infinite dimensional generalization of anti de Sitter space are revisited and improved.
