The transportation sector is a major consumer of primary energy and is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable transportation requires identifying and quantifying factors influencing transport-related CO2 emissions. This research aims to establish an adaptable, precise, and transparent forecasting structure for transport CO2 emissions of the United States. For this reason, we proposed a multi-stage method that incorporates explainable Machine Learning (ML) and Feature Selection (FS), guaranteeing interpretability in comparison to conventional black-box models. Due to high multicollinearity among 24 initial variables, hierarchical feature clustering and multi-step FS were applied, resulting in five key predictors: Total Primary Energy Imports (TPEI), Total Fossil Fuels Consumed (FFT), Annual Vehicle Miles Traveled (AVMT), Air Passengers-Domestic and International (APDI), and Unemployment Rate (UR). Four ML methods—Support Vector Regression, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, ElasticNet, and Multilayer Perceptron—were employed, with ElasticNet outperforming the others with RMSE = 45.53, MAE = 30.6, and MAPE = 0.016. SHAP analysis revealed AVMT, FFT, and APDI as the top contributors to CO2 emissions. This framework aids policymakers in making informed decisions and setting precise investments. Full article

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article

Over recent decades, phase-change materials (PCMs) have gained prominence as latent-heat thermal energy storage systems in building envelopes because of their high energy density. However, only PCMs that complete a full daily charge–discharge cycle can deliver meaningful energy and carbon-emission savings. This simulation study introduces a methodology that simultaneously optimizes PCM integration for storage efficiency, indoor thermal comfort, and energy savings. Two new indicators are proposed: overall storage efficiency (ECn), which consolidates heating and cooling-efficiency ratios into a single value, and the performance factor (PF), which quantifies the PCM’s effectiveness in maintaining thermal comfort. Using EnergyPlus v8.9 coupled with DesignBuilder, a residential ASHRAE 90.1 mid-rise apartment was modeled in six warm-temperate (Cfb) European cities for the summer period from June 1 to August 31. Four paraffin PCMs (RT-22/25/28/31 HC, 20 mm thickness) were tested under natural and controlled ventilation strategies, with windows opening 50% when outdoor air was at least 2 °C cooler than indoors. Simulation outputs were validated against experimental cubicle data, yielding a mean absolute indoor temperature error ≤ 4.5%, well within the ±5% tolerance commonly accepted for building thermal simulations. The optimum configuration—RT-25 HC with temperature-controlled ventilation—achieved PF = 1.0 (100% comfort compliance) in all six cities and delivered summer cooling-energy savings of up to 3376 kWh in Paris, the highest among the locations studied. Carbon-emission reductions reached 2254 kg CO2-e year−1, and static payback periods remained below the assumed 50-year building life at a per kg PCM cost of USD 1. The ECn–PF framework, therefore, provides a transparent basis for selecting cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-carbon PCM solutions in warm-temperate buildings. Full article

Marine biofouling significantly impacts the performance and longevity of polymer-based marine structures, particularly those designed for hydrodynamic applications such as Vortex-Induced Vibration suppression systems. Traditional antifouling solutions rely on copper-based multilayer coatings, which present challenges including mechanical vulnerability (e.g., chipping and scratching), high material and labor demands, and environmental concerns such as volatile organic compound emissions and copper leaching. Recent developments in material science have introduced an alternative system involving the direct incorporation of copper oxide (Cu2O) into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during the molding process. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two antifouling integration methods—System 1 (traditional coating-based) and System 2 (Cu2O-impregnated HDPE)—evaluating their environmental impact across production, application, use, and end-of-life stages. The functional unit used for this study was 1 square meter for a time period of five years. Using ISO 14040-compliant methodology and data from Ecoinvent and OpenLCA, three impact categories were assessed: global warming potential (GWP), cumulative energy demand (CED), and marine aquatic ecotoxicity Potential (MAETP). The results indicate that System 2 outperforms System 1 in GWP (4.42 vs. 5.65 kg CO2-eq), CED (75.3 vs. 91.0 MJ-eq), and MAETP (327,002 vs. 469,929 kg 1,4-DCB-eq) per functional unit over a five-year lifespan, indicating a 21.8%, 17.3%, and 30.4% reduction in the key impact factors, respectively. These results suggest that direct Cu2O incorporation offers a more environmentally sustainable and mechanically resilient antifouling strategy, supporting the potential of embedded antifouling systems to shift industry practices toward more sustainable marine infrastructure. The stretch film production is highly energy intensive. The components of the technological line are powered by electrical energy, and the heat is used to change the physical state of the raw material (granules). The raw material is poured into FCR (the first calender roller). To solidify the liquid raw material, the calendar must be cooled. The low-temperature heat, treated as waste heat, has dissipated in the atmosphere. Technological innovations were proposed: (a) the raw material comprises raw material (primary) and up to 80% recyclate (waste originating mainly from agriculture), (b) the use of low-temperature waste heat (the cooling of FCR in the process of foil stretch production). A heat recovery line based on two compressor heat pumps (HP, hydraulically coupled) was designed. The waste heat (by low-temperature HP) was transformed into high-temperature heat (by high-temperature HP) and used to prepare the raw material. The proposed technological line enables the management of difficult-to-manage post-production waste (i.e., agriculture and other economic sectors). It reduces energy consumption and raw materials from non-renewable sources (CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions are reducing). It implements a closed-loop economy based on renewable energy sources (according to the European Green Deal). Full article

The fatigue resistance of cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term durability of pavement structures. However, limited cementitious material (CM) content often leads to high packing voids, which significantly compromise fatigue performance. Existing studies have rarely explored the coupled mechanism between pore structure and fatigue behavior, especially in the context of solid-waste-based CMs. In this study, a cost-effective alkali-activated sludge gasification slag (ASS) was proposed as a sustainable CM substitute for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in CSM. A dual evaluation approach combining cross-sectional image analysis and fatigue loading tests was employed to reveal the effect pathway of void structure optimization on fatigue resistance. The results showed that ASS exhibited excellent cementitious reactivity, forming highly polymerized C-A-S-H/C-S-H gels that contributed to a denser microstructure and superior mechanical performance. At a 6% binder dosage, the void ratio of ASS–CSM was reduced to 30%, 3% lower than that of OPC–CSM. The 28-day unconfined compressive strength and compressive resilient modulus reached 5.7 MPa and 1183 MPa, representing improvements of 35.7% and 4.1% compared to those of OPC. Under cyclic loading, the ASS system achieved higher energy absorption and more uniform stress distribution, effectively suppressing fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Moreover, the production cost and carbon emissions of ASS were 249.52 CNY/t and 174.51 kg CO2e/t—reductions of 10.9% and 76.2% relative to those of OPC, respectively. These findings demonstrate that ASS not only improves fatigue performance through pore structure refinement but also offers significant economic and environmental advantages, providing a theoretical foundation for the large-scale application of solid-waste-based binders in pavement engineering. Renewable energy stands as a pivotal solution to environmental concerns, prompting substantial research and development endeavors to promote its adoption and enhance energy efficiency. Despite the recognized environmental superiority of renewable energy systems, there is a lack of globally standardized indicators specifically focused on renewable energy efficiency. This study aims to develop and apply a non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) indicator, termed the Renewable Energy Indicator (REI), to measure environmental performance at the national level and to identify differences in renewable energy efficiency across countries grouped by development status and income level. The REI incorporates new factors such as agricultural methane emissions (thousand metric tons of CO2 equivalent), PM2.5 air pollution exposure (µg/m3), and aspects related to electricity, including consumption (as % of total final energy consumption), production from renewable sources, excluding hydroelectric (kWh), and accessibility in rural and urban areas (% of population with access), aligning with the emerging paradigm outlined by the United Nations. By segmenting the REI into global, developmental, and income group classifications, this study conducts the Mann–Whitney U test and the Kruskal–Wallis H tests to identify variations in renewable energy efficiency among different country groups. Our findings reveal top-performing countries globally, highlighting both developed (e.g., Sweden) and developing nations (e.g., Costa Rica, Sri Lanka). Central and North European countries demonstrate high efficiency, while those facing political and economic instability perform poorly. Agricultural-dependent nations like Australia and Argentina exhibit lower REI due to significant methane emissions. Disparities between developed and developing markets underscore the importance of understanding distinct socio-economic dynamics for effective policy formulation. Comparative analysis across income groups informs specific strategies tailored to each category. Full article

The generation of fine coal particles during mining and processing presents significant environmental and logistical challenges, particularly in coal-dependent, developing countries like South Africa (SA). This review critically evaluates the technical viability of fine coal briquetting as a sustainable waste-to-energy solution within a SA context, while drawing from global best practices and comparative benchmarks. It examines abundant feedstocks that can be used for valorization strategies, including fine coal and agricultural biomass residues. Furthermore, binder types, manufacturing parameters, and quality optimization strategies that influence briquette performance are assessed. The co-densification of fine coal with biomass offers a means to enhance combustion efficiency, reduce dust emissions, and convert low-value waste into a high-calorific, manageable fuel. Attention is also given to briquette testing standards (i.e., South African Bureau of Standards, ASTM International, and International Organization of Standardization) and end-use applications across domestic, industrial, and off-grid settings. Moreover, the review explores socio-economic implications, including rural job creation, energy poverty alleviation, and the potential role of briquetting in SA’s ‘Just Energy Transition’ (JET). This paper uniquely integrates technical analysis with policy relevance, rural energy needs, and practical challenges specific to South Africa, while offering a structured framework for bio-coal briquetting adoption in developing countries. While technical and economic barriers remain, such as binder costs and feedstock variability, the integration of briquetting into circular economy frameworks represents a promising path toward cleaner, decentralized energy and coal waste valorization. Air pollution caused by CO2 emissions has become a global issue of vital importance, posing irreversible risks to health and life when concentration of CO2 becomes too high. This study aims to estimate the CO2 emissions and carbon footprint of the public transport bus fleet in Bucharest, with a comparative analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by diesel and electric buses of the Bucharest Public Transport Company (STB S.A.) in the period 2021–2024, after the modernization of the fleet through the introduction of 130 hybrid buses and 58 electric buses. In 2024, the introduction of electric buses and the reduction in diesel bus mileage reduced GHG emissions by almost 13% compared to 2023, saving over 11 kilotons of CO2e. There was also a 2.68% reduction in the specific carbon footprint compared to the previous year, which is clear evidence of the potential of electric vehicles in achieving decarbonization targets. We have also developed two strategies, one for 2025 and one for the period 2025–2030, replacing the aging fleet with electric vehicles. This demonstrates the relevance of electric transport integrated into the sustainable development strategy for urban mobility systems and alignment with European standards, including improving air quality and living standards. Background: This paper proposes a conceptual framework for a multifunctional mobility hub (MMH) that co-locates shared e-mobility services, urban logistics, and charging/storage infrastructure within a single site. Aimed at high-density European cities, the MMH model addresses current gaps in both research and practice, where multimodal mobility services, logistics, and energy are rarely planned in an integrated manner. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was applied, including a systematic literature review (PRISMA), expert interviews, case studies, and a stakeholder workshop, to identify synergies across fleet types and operational domains. Results: The analysis reveals key design principles for MMHs, such as interoperable charging, the functional separation of passenger and freight flows, and modular, scalable infrastructure adapted to urban constraints. Conclusions: The MMH serves as a preliminary concept for planning next-generation mobility stations. It offers qualitative insights for urban planners, operators, and policymakers into how multifunctional hubs may support lower emissions, more efficient operations, and shared infrastructure use. While hospital meals are designed to meet the nutritional requirements associated with illness or surgery, competing priorities often take precedence over food quality, contributing to poor patient satisfaction, in-hospital malnutrition, and high food waste. The environmental impacts of hospital food services are a less well-characterized dimension of this complex problem. A prospective cohort study of patients admitted for select abdominal surgeries between June and October 2021 was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Canada. Greenhouse gas emissions and land-use impacts associated with all food items served were estimated, and patient food waste was weighed for each meal. Patients’ experience of hospital food was measured at discharge. Nutrition was assessed by comparing measured oral intake to minimum caloric and protein requirements. On average, food served in hospital resulted in 3.75 kg CO2e/patient/day and 6.44 m2/patient/day. Average food waste was 0.88–1.39 kg/patient/day (37.5–58.9% of food served). Patients met their caloric and protein requirements on 9.8% and 14.8% of days in hospital, respectively. For patient satisfaction, 75% of overall scores were lower than the industry benchmark, and food quality scores were inversely correlated with quantities of food wasted. Redesigning inpatient food offerings to feature high-quality, low-emissions meals could lessen their environmental impacts while improving patient nutritional status and experience. Full article

This study investigates the impact of hydrogen supplementation on the performance, efficiency, and emissions of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, with a specific focus on knock phenomena. A Nissan HR16DE engine was modified to operate in a dual-fuel mode using gasoline (E95) and high-purity hydrogen. Hydrogen was injected via secondary manifold injectors and managed through a reprogrammable MoTeC ECU, allowing precise control of ignition timing and fuel delivery. Experiments were conducted across various engine speeds and loads, with hydrogen mass fractions ranging from 0% to 30%. Results showed that increasing hydrogen content enhanced combustion intensity, thermal efficiency, and stability. Brake specific fuel consumption decreased by up to 43.4%, while brake thermal efficiency improved by 2–3%. CO, HC, and CO2 emissions were significantly reduced. However, NOx emissions increased with higher hydrogen concentrations due to elevated combustion temperatures. Knock tendency was effectively mitigated by retarding ignition timing, ensuring peak in-cylinder pressure occurred at 14–15° CAD aTDC. These findings demonstrate the potential of hydrogen supplementation to reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions in spark ignition engines, while highlighting the importance of precise combustion control to address challenges such as knock and NOx formation. The Homology of Atmospheric Pollutants and Carbon Emissions in Industrial Parks: A Case Study in North China

Industrial parks are well-known as a critical intervention point for global carbon emission reductions due to the high carbon emissions emitted. Conducting carbon accounting research in these parks can provide more precise foundational data for carbon reduction initiatives, promoting low-carbon industrial park development. However, industrial parks, positioned as non-independent accounting units between provincial and industry levels, face severe challenges due to ambiguous boundaries, complex accounting entities, and data selection difficulties that significantly impact the carbon accounting accuracy. This study employed the IPCC emission factor method for industrial parks, taking its management structure as the accounting boundary. Additionally, we constructed a carbon accounting method and representation system by considering the carbon emission flow path and integrating the correlation between pollutant and carbon emissions. By categorizing carbon emissions into five groups, this study obtained emissions from fuel combustion (E1), industrial processes (E2), purchased/sold electricity (E3), purchased/sold heat (E4), and carbon-sequestering products (E5). Between 2016 and 2021, the industrial park’s carbon emissions fell from 15.0783 to 6.7152 million tons, while the intensity dropped from 4.86 to 1.91 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per CNY 10,000. The park achieved dual control targets for the total carbon emissions and intensity, with E2 being the main reduction source (70% of total). Meanwhile, total atmospheric pollutants decreased from 9466.19 to 1736.70 tons, with C25 and C26 industries contributing over 99%. In particular, C26 achieved significant reductions in nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), aiding pollution mitigation. A strong positive correlation was found between pollutants and carbon emissions, especially in C26, SO2 (0.77), and NOx (0.89), suggesting NOx as a more suitable carbon emission indicator during chemical production. These findings offer a theoretical framework for using pollutant monitoring to characterize carbon emissions and support decision-making for sustainable industrial development. Full article

Transitioning to sustainable energy systems is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially in remote industrial operations where diesel generators remain the dominant power source. This study examines the feasibility of integrating a redox flow battery (RFB) storage system to optimize wind energy utilization at the Raglan mining site in northern Canada, with the goal of reducing diesel dependency, enhancing grid stability, and improving energy security. To evaluate the effectiveness of this hybrid system, a MATLAB R2024b-based simulation model was developed, incorporating wind energy forecasting, load demand analysis, and economic feasibility assessments across multiple storage and wind penetration scenarios. Results indicate that deploying 12 additional E-115 wind turbines combined with a 20 MW/160 MWh redox flow battery system could lead to diesel savings of up to 63.98%, reducing CO2 emissions by 68,000 tonnes annually. However, the study also highlights a key economic challenge: the high Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) of CAD (Canadian dollars) 7831/MWh, which remains a barrier to large-scale implementation. For the scenario with high diesel economy, the LCOS was found to be CAD 6110/MWh, and the corresponding LCOE was CAD 590/MWh. While RFB integration improves system reliability, its economic viability depends on key factors, including reductions in electrolyte costs, advancements in operational efficiency, and supportive policy frameworks. This study presents a comprehensive methodology for evaluating energy storage in off-grid industrial sites and identifies key challenges in scaling up renewable energy adoption for remote mining operations. A core tertiary wastewater reactive filtration technology, where continuously renewed hydrous ferric oxide coated sand is created in an upflow continuous backwash filter, has been adopted in about 100 water resource recovery facilities in several countries. Primarily focused on ultralow phosphorus discharge requirements to address nutrient pollution impacts and harmful algae blooms, the technology has also demonstrated the capacity to address high-efficiency removals of Hg, As, Zn, N, and other pollutants of concern, in addition to water quality needs met by common sand filtration, including total suspended solids. Recent work has demonstrated the capability of an additive iron–ozone catalytic oxidation process to the core reactive filtration technology platform to address micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals. Most recently, direct injection of frangible biochar into the reactive sand filter bed as a consumable reagent demonstrates a novel biochar water treatment technology in a platform that yields dose-dependent carbon negativity. In this work, the reactive filtration technology performance is reviewed from field pilot-scale to full-scale installation scenarios for nutrient removal and recovery applications. We also review the potential of the technology for nutrient recovery with the addition of biochar and micropollutant destructive removal with catalytic oxidation. Research exploration of this reactive filtration technology includes life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic assessment to evaluate the environmental and economic impacts of this advanced water treatment technology. A recent LCA study of a pilot-scale field research and full-scale municipal system with over 2200 inventory elements shows a dose-dependent carbon negativity when biochar is injected into the process stream of reactive filtration. In this study, LCA demonstrates that reactive filtration has the potential as a negative emissions technology with −1.21 kg CO2e/m3, where the negative contribution from the dosed biochar is −1.53 kg CO2e/m3. In this biochar water treatment configuration, the system not only effectively removes pollutants from wastewater but also contributes to carbon sequestration and nutrient recovery for agriculture, making it a potentially valuable approach for sustainable water treatment.
