Influence of Heat Treatment on Precipitate and Microstructure of 38CrMoAl Steel

To address the central cracking problem in continuous casting slabs of 38CrMoAl steel, high-temperature tensile tests were performed using a Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator to characterize the hot ductility of the steel within the temperature range of 600–1200 °C. The phase transformation behavior was computationally analyzed via the Thermo-Calc software, while the microstructure, fracture morphology, and precipitate characteristics were systematically investigated using a metallographic microscope (MM), a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally, the effects of different holding times and cooling rates on the microstructure and precipitates of 38CrMoAl steel were also studied. The results show that the third brittle temperature region of 38CrMoAl steel is 645–1009 °C, and the fracture mechanisms can be classified into three types: (I) in the α single-phase region, the thickness of intergranular proeutectoid ferrite increases with rising temperature, leading to reduced hot ductility; (II) in the γ single-phase region, the average size of precipitates increases while the number density decreases with increasing temperature, thereby improving hot ductility; and (III) in the α + γ two-phase region, the precipitation of proeutectoid ferrite promotes crack propagation and the dense distribution of precipitates at grain boundaries causes stress concentration, further deteriorating hot ductility. Heat treatment experiments indicate that the microstructures of the specimen transformed under water cooling, air cooling, and furnace cooling conditions as follows: martensite + proeutectoid ferrite → bainite + ferrite → ferrite. The average size of precipitates first decreased, then increased, and finally decreased again with increasing holding time, while the number density exhibited the opposite trend. Therefore, when the holding time was the same, reducing the cooling rate could increase the average size of the precipitates and decrease their number density, thereby improving the hot ductility of 38CrMoAl steel. This study investigates the wear performance of 20CrMnTi steel, a commonly used material for spiral bevel gears, after heat treatment, with a focus on the microstructural evolution and wear behavior in both the surface and gradient direction of the carburized layer. The results show that the microstructure composition in the gradient direction of the carburized layer gradually transitions from martensite and residual austenite to a martensite–bainite mixed structure, and eventually transforms to fully bainitic in the matrix. With the extension of carburizing time, both the effective carburized layer depth and the hardened layer depth significantly increase. Wear track morphology analysis reveals that the wear track depth gradually becomes shallower and narrower, and the wear rate increases significantly with increasing load. However, the friction coefficient shows little sensitivity to changes in carburizing time and load. Further investigations show that as the carburized layer depth increases, the carbon concentration and hardness of the samples gradually decrease, resulting in an increase in the average wear rate and a progressive worsening of wear severity. After the wear tests, different depths of plowing grooves, spalling, and fish-scale-like features were observed in the wear regions. Additionally, with the increase in load and carburized layer depth, both the width and depth of the wear tracks significantly increased. The research results provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the surface carburizing process of 20CrMnTi steel and improving its wear resistance. Full article

The article presents a comprehensive review of key issues and challenges related to enhancing the durability of hot forging tools. It discusses modern strategies aimed at increasing tool life, including modifications to tool materials, heat treatment, surface engineering, tool and die design, die geometry, tribological conditions, and lubrication. The review is based on extensive literature data, including recent publications and the authors’ own research, which has been implemented under industrial conditions at the modern forging facility in Forge Plant “Glinik” (Poland). The study introduces original design and technological solutions, such as an innovative concept for manufacturing forging dies from alloy structural steels with welded impressions, replacing traditional hot-work tool steel dies. It also proposes a zonal hardfacing approach, which involves applying welds with different chemical compositions to specific surface zones of the die impressions, selected according to the dominant wear mechanisms in each zone. General guidelines for selecting hardfacing material compositions are also provided. Additionally, the article presents technological processes for die production and regeneration. The importance and application of computer simulations of forging processes are emphasized, particularly in predicting wear mechanisms and intensity, as well as in optimizing tool and forging geometry. This study investigates the mechanical, tribological, and electrochemical behaviour of a novel precipitation-hardenable martensitic alloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The alloy was specifically engineered with an optimised composition, free from cobalt and molybdenum, and featuring reduced nickel content (7 wt.%) and 8 wt.% chromium. It has been developed as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional maraging steels, while maintaining high mechanical strength and a refined microstructure tailored to the steep thermal gradients inherent to the SLM process. Several ageing heat treatments were assessed to evaluate their influence on microstructure, hardness, tensile strength, retained austenite content, dislocation density, as well as wear behaviour (pin-on-disc test) and corrosion resistance (polarisation curves in 3.5%NaCl). The results indicate that ageing at 540 °C for 2 h offers an optimal combination of hardness (550–560 HV), tensile strength (~1700 MPa), microstructural stability, and wear resistance, with a 90% improvement compared to the as-built condition. In contrast, ageing at 600 °C for 1 h enhances ductility and corrosion resistance (Rp = 462.2 kΩ; Ecorr = –111.8 mV), at the expense of a higher fraction of reverted austenite (~34%) and reduced hardness (450 HV). This study demonstrates that the mechanical, surface, and electrochemical performance of this novel SLM-produced alloy can be effectively tailored through controlled thermal treatments, offering promising opportunities for demanding applications requiring a customised balance of strength, durability, and corrosion behaviour. 430 stainless steel exhibits soft magnetic properties, excellent formability, and corrosion resistance, making it widely used in industrial applications. This study investigates the effects of different cold working rates on the properties of 430 stainless steel subjected to various magnetic annealing atmospheres (F-1.5Si, F-1.5Si-10%, F-1.5Si-40%, F-1.5Si-10% (MA), F-1.5Si-40% (MA), F-1.5Si-10% (H2), and F-1.5Si-40% (H2)). The results indicate that increasing the cold working rate improves the material’s mechanical properties; however, it negatively impacts its magnetic and corrosion resistance properties. Additionally, the magnetic annealing process improves the mechanical properties, while atmospheric magnetic annealing optimizes the overall magnetic performance. In contrast, magnetic annealing in a hydrogen atmosphere does not enhance the magnetic properties as effectively as atmospheric magnetic annealing. Still, it promotes the formation of a protective layer, preserving the mechanical properties and providing better corrosion resistance. Furthermore, regardless of whether magnetic annealing is conducted in an atmospheric or hydrogen environment, materials with 10% cold work rate (F-1.5Si-10% (MA) and F-1.5Si-10% (H2)) exhibit the lowest coercive force (286 and 293 A/m in the 10 Hz test condition), making them ideal for electromagnetic applications. This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies concerning laser heat treatment (LHT) of structural and tool steels, with particular attention to the 21NiCrMo2 steel used for carburized gear wheels. Analysis includes the influence of critical laser processing conditions—including power output, motion speed, spot size, and focusing distance—on surface microhardness, hardening depth, and microstructure development. The findings indicate that the energy density is the dominant factor that affects the outcomes of LHT. Optimal results, in the form of a high surface microhardness and a sufficient depth of hardening, were achieved within the energy density range of 80–130 J/mm2, allowing for martensitic transformation while avoiding defects such as melting or cracking. At densities below 50 J/mm2, incomplete hardening occurred with minimal microhardness improvement. On the contrary, densities exceeding 150–180 J/mm2 caused surface overheating and degradation. For carburized 21NiCrMo2 steel, the most effective parameters included 450–1050 W laser power, 1.7–2.5 mm/s scanning speed, and 2.0–2.3 mm beam diameter. The review confirms that process control through energy-based parameters allows for reliable prediction and optimization of LHT for industrial applications, particularly in components exposed to cyclic loads. A novel stainless steel with high Mn and Mo content (much higher than traditional stainless steel), designated CH241SS, was developed as a potential replacement for Cr-Mo-V alloy steel in the cold forging applications of precision industry. Through carbon reduction in an environmentally friendly manner and a two-stage heat treatment process, the hardness of as-cast CH241 was tailored from HRC 37 to HRC 29, thereby meeting the industrial specifications of cold-forged steel (≤HRC 30). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-cast microstructure revealed the presence of a small amount of ferrite, martensite, austenite, and alloy carbides. After heat treatment, CH241 exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite with dispersed Cr(Ni-Mo) alloy carbides. The CH241 alloy demonstrated excellent high-temperature stability. No noticeable softening occurred after 72 h for the second-stage heat treatment. Based on the mechanical and room-temperature tensile fatigue properties of CH241-F (forging material) and CH241-ST (soft-tough heat treatment), it was demonstrated that the CH241 stainless steel was superior to the traditional stainless steel 4xx in terms of strength and fatigue life. Therefore, CH241 stainless steel can be introduced into cold forging and can be used in precision fatigue application. The relevant data include composition design and heat treatment properties. This study is an important milestone in assisting the upgrading of the vehicle and aerospace industries. Full article

Sanicro 25 (X7NiCrWCuCoNb25-23-3-3-2) steel is specifically designed for use in superheater components within the latest generation of conventional power plants. These power plants operate under conditions often referred to as super-ultra-supercritical, with steam parameters that can reach up to 30 MPa and temperatures of 653 °C for fresh steam and 672 °C for reheated steam. While last-generation supercritical power plants still rely on fossil fuels, they represent a significant step forward in more sustainable energy production. The most sophisticated facilities of this kind can achieve thermodynamic efficiencies exceeding 47%. This study aimed to conduct a detailed analysis of the initial precipitation processes occurring in Sanicro 25 steel within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. The temperature of 700 °C corresponds to the operational conditions of this material, particularly in secondary steam superheaters in thermal power plants that operate under ultra-supercritical parameters. Understanding precipitation processes is crucial for optimizing mechanical performance, particularly in terms of long-term strength and creep resistance. To accurately assess the microstructural changes that occur during the early stages of service, a digital twin approach was employed, which included CALPHAD simulations and experimental heat treatments. Experimental annealing tests were conducted in air within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. Precipitation behavior was simulated using the Thermo-Calc 2025a with Dictra software package. The results from Prisma simulations correlated well with the experimental data related to the kinetics of phase transformations; however, it was noted that the predicted sizes of the precipitates were generally smaller than those observed in experiments. Additionally, computational limitations were encountered during some simulations due to the complexity arising from the numerous alloying elements present in Sanicro 25 steel. The microstructural evolution was investigated using various methods, including light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Full article

This study investigated the influence of various annealing treatments on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of 20MnCr5 steel in a 3.5% NaCl solution. A combination of microstructural analysis, hardness testing, and electrochemical techniques was used to comprehensively characterize each condition. To enhance data interpretability, a correlation analysis was performed and visualized through a correlation diagram, enabling statistical assessment of the relationships between grain features, phase distribution, mechanical properties, and corrosion indicators. The results demonstrated that corrosion resistance in 20MnCr5 steel is not governed by a single parameter but by the interplay between grain size, morphology, and phase balance. Excessive pearlite content or coarse, irregular grains were consistently associated with higher corrosion rates and lower electrochemical stability. In contrast, a moderate phase ratio and equiaxed grain structure, achieved through normalization, resulted in better corrosion resistance, confirmed by the highest polarization resistance and lowest corrosion current density values among all samples. Although increased grain refinement improved the hardness, it did not always correlate with a better corrosion performance, especially when morphological uniformity was lacking. This highlights the importance of balancing mechanical and corrosion properties through carefully controlled thermal processing. Full article

To improve the low-temperature impact toughness of Q235B steel, this paper adopts a heat treatment method combining quenching and spheroidizing annealing to enhance its microstructure and properties and conducts a detailed analysis of the evolution of the microstructure of Q235 steel under the spheroidizing annealing process. The results show that spheroidizing annealing at 700 °C has a significant spheroidizing effect on the pearlite structure: after 6 h of annealing, the room-temperature tensile strength reaches 522 MPa, the elongation is 31.28%, and the impact energy is 323.14 J; as the impact temperature decreases, the impact toughness of Q235B steel decreases, but the impact energy can still remain at 291.62 J under service conditions of −20 °C. This is attributed to the spherical cementite formed by spheroidizing annealing, which has better dispersibility and can reduce stress concentration, thereby improving the low-temperature impact toughness. AISI 347H stainless steel is widely used in high-temperature environments due to its excellent creep strength and oxidation resistance; however, its corrosion performance remains highly sensitive to thermal oxidation, and the effects of thermal history on its passive film stability are not yet fully understood. This study addresses this knowledge gap by systematically investigating the influence of solution treatment on the corrosion and oxidation resistance of AISI 347H stainless steel. The specimens were subjected to solution heat treatment at 1050 °C, followed by air cooling, and then evaluated through electrochemical testing, high-temperature oxidation experiments at 550 °C, and multiscale surface characterization techniques. The solution treatment refined the austenitic microstructure by dissolving coarse Nb-rich precipitates, as confirmed by SEM and EBSD, and improved passive film integrity. The stabilizing effect of Nb also played a critical role in suppressing sensitization, thereby enhancing resistance to intergranular attack. Electrochemical measurements and EIS analysis revealed a lower corrosion current density and higher charge transfer resistance in the treated samples, indicating enhanced passivation behavior. ToF-SIMS depth profiling and oxide thickness analysis confirmed a slower parabolic oxide growth rate and reduced oxidation rate constant in the solution-treated condition. At 550 °C, oxidation was suppressed by the formation of compact, Cr-rich scales with dual-distributed Nb oxides, effectively limiting diffusion pathways and stabilizing the protective layer. These findings demonstrate that solution treatment is an effective strategy to improve the long-term corrosion and oxidation performance of AISI 347H stainless steel in harsh service environments. This study provides a combined numerical and analytical investigation of fatigue crack growth in compact tension specimens made of 42CrMo4 steel. Through simulations in ANSYS Workbench (SMART Crack Growth module) and numerical modeling in MATLAB, the model is validated by comparing its results with the standard ASTM E399 and Paris’ law relationships. The effect of heat treatments and loading on crack growth rate was investigated. The results confirm the model’s applicability in predicting fatigue behavior in the linear–elastic region. The phase transformations of Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) M4 steel were studied during heat treatments using a CALPHAD-based method. The calculated results were compared with experimental observations. The optimum austenitizing temperature was determined to be about 1120 °C using Thermo-Calc software (2024b). Air-cooling and quenching treatments led to the formation of martensite with a hardness of 63–65 Rockwell C (HRC). The annealing treatment promoted the formation of the equilibrium ferrite and carbide phases and resulted in a hardness of 24 HRC. These findings with regard to phases and microconstituents are in agreement with the predictions derived from a Thermo-Calc-calculated time–temperature–transformation diagram at 1120 °C. Additionally, the primary carbides, MC and M6C, which formed prior to the heat treatment and had a minor influence on the quenched hardness. In contrast, the tempering process primarily led to the formation of fine secondary M6C carbides, which hardened the tempered martensite to 57 HRC. The present work demonstrates the application of a CALPHAD-based methodology to the design and microstructural analysis of tool steels. Full article

An approach for the formation of intermetallic coatings on the titanium surface based on titanium aluminides is proposed. The approach involves producing a layered steel-aluminum-titanium metal composite via explosive welding, followed by heat treatment to form a diffusion zone at the steel–aluminum interface with a thickness of more than 30 μm, sufficient for the spontaneous separation of the steel layer. As a result, an aluminum layer approximately 0.3 mm thick remains on the titanium surface. Subsequent heating at temperatures of 700–850 °C, below the allotropic transformation temperature of titanium, results in the transformation of the aluminum layer into titanium aluminides. The formation of the intermetallic coating structure occurs as a result of the upward transportation of TiAl3 fragments separated from the reaction zone by circulating melt flows. With increasing heat treatment time, these fragments become separated by the Al2O3 oxide phase. Full article

This study presents a numerical model for analyzing fatigue crack growth in 42CrMo4 steel pivot bolts under different heat treatments and service loads. The finite element method (FEM) in the ANSYS Workbench environment (version 2019R1) (SMART Crack Growth), along with algorithms based on Paris’s law implemented in MATLAB (version R2016a), was used. The results highlight the significant influence of heat treatment on fatigue resistance and serve as a basis for optimizing design parameters and improving the durability of the structural components.
