Temperature is a key physiological indicator of plant health, influenced by factors including water status, disease and developmental stage. Monitoring changes in multiple factors is helpful for early diagnosis of plant growth. However, there are a variety of complex light interference phenomena in the greenhouse, so traditional detection methods cannot meet effective online monitoring of strawberry health status without manual intervention. Therefore, this paper proposes a leaf soft-sensing method based on a thermal infrared imaging sensor and adaptive image screening Internet of Things system, with additional sensors to realize indirect and rapid monitoring of the health status of a large range of strawberries. Firstly, a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model is established by analyzing the environmental interference terms from the other sensors. Secondly, through the relationship between plant physiological metabolism and canopy temperature, a growth model is established to predict the growth period of strawberries based on canopy temperature. Finally, by deploying environmental sensors and solar height sensors, the image acquisition node is activated when the environmental interference is less than the specified value and the acquisition is completed. The results showed that the accuracy of this multiple sensors system was 86.9%, which is 30% higher than the traditional model and 4.28% higher than the latest advanced model. It makes it possible to quickly and accurately assess the health status of plants by a single factor without in-person manual intervention, and provides an important indication of the early, undetectable state of strawberry disease, based on remote operation. Radio frequency (RF)-based wireless systems are broadly used in communication systems such as mobile networks, satellite links, and monitoring applications. These systems offer outstanding advantages over wired systems, particularly in terms of ease of installation. However, researchers are looking for safer alternatives as a result of worries about possible health problems connected to high-frequency radiofrequency transmission. Using the visible light spectrum is one promising approach; three cutting-edge technologies are emerging in this regard: Optical Camera Communication (OCC), Light Fidelity (Li-Fi), and Visible Light Communication (VLC). In this paper, we propose a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) modulation technology for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, utilizing an LED array and time-domain on-off keying (OOK). The proposed system is compatible with both rolling shutter and global shutter cameras, including commercially available models such as CCTV, webcams, and smart cameras, commonly deployed in buildings and industrial environments. Despite the compact size of the LED array, we demonstrate that, by optimizing parameters such as exposure time, camera focal length, and channel coding, our system can achieve up to 20 communication links over a 20 m distance with low bit error rate. The evolution of Industry 4.0 and the emerging paradigm of Industry 5.0 have introduced disruptive technologies that are reshaping modern manufacturing environments. Among these, Digital Twin (DT) and Industrial Metaverse (IM) technologies are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). However, a comprehensive understanding of how these technologies integrate to support OHS in manufacturing remains limited. This study systematically explores the transformative role of DT and IM in creating immersive, intelligent, and human-centric safety ecosystems. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 75 peer-reviewed studies from the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases was conducted. The review identifies key enabling technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Extended Reality (XR), Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Collaborative Robots (COBOTS), and highlights their applications in real-time monitoring, immersive safety training, and predictive hazard mitigation. A conceptual framework is proposed, illustrating a synergistic digital ecosystem that integrates predictive analytics, real-time monitoring, and immersive training to enhance the OHS. The findings highlight both the transformative benefits and the key adoption challenges of these technologies, including technical complexities, data security, privacy, ethical concerns, and organizational resistance. This study provides a foundational framework for future research and practical implementation in Industry 5.0. Full article

End-users in a decision-oriented Internet of Things (IoT) healthcare system are often left in the dark regarding critical security information necessary for making informed decisions about potential risks. This is partly due to the lack of transparency and system security awareness end-users have in such systems. To empower end-users and enhance their cybersecurity situational awareness, it is imperative to thoroughly document and report the runtime security controls in place, as well as the security-relevant aspects of the devices they rely on, while the need for better transparency is obvious, it remains uncertain whether current systems offer adequate security metadata for end-users and how future designs can be improved to ensure better visibility into the security measures implemented. To address this gap, we conducted table-top exercises with ten security and ICT experts to evaluate a typical IoT-Health scenario. These exercises revealed the critical role of security metadata, identified the available ones to be presented to users, and suggested potential enhancements that could be integrated into system design. We present our observations from the exercises, highlighting experts’ valuable suggestions, concerns, and views, backed by our in-depth analysis. Moreover, as a proof-of-concept of our study, we simulated three relevant use cases to detect cyber risks. This comprehensive analysis underscores critical considerations that can significantly improve future system protocols, ensuring end-users are better equipped to navigate and mitigate security risks effectively. Honey bees play a vital role in ecosystem stability, and the need to monitor colony health has driven the development of IoT-based systems in beekeeping, with recent studies exploring both empirical and machine learning approaches to detect and analyze key hive conditions. In this study, we present an IoT-based system that leverages sensors to record and analyze the acoustic signals produced within a beehive. The captured audio data is transmitted to the cloud, where it is converted into mel-spectrogram representations for analysis. We explore multiple data pre-processing strategies and machine learning (ML) models, assessing their effectiveness in classifying queenless states. To evaluate model generalization, we apply transfer learning (TL) techniques across datasets collected from different hives. Additionally, we implement the feature extraction process and deploy the pre-trained ML model on a deep edge IoT device (Arduino Zero). We examine both memory consumption and execution time. The results indicate that the selected feature extraction method and ML model, which were identified through extensive experimentation, are sufficiently lightweight to operate within the device’s memory constraints. Furthermore, the execution time confirms the feasibility of real-time queenless state detection in edge-based applications. Full article

This study addresses the problem of agricultural waste utilization and nutrition for older adults by developing a food product based on a circular design approach. Pineapple core was used to produce a clean-label dietary powder without chemical or enzymatic treatment, relying on repeated rinsing and hot-air drying. The development process followed a structured analysis of physical, chemical, and sensory properties. The powder contained 83.46 g/100 g dietary fiber, 0° Brix sugar, pH 4.72, low water activity (aw < 0.45), and no detectable heavy metals or microbial contamination. Sensory evaluation by expert panelists confirmed that the product was acceptable in appearance, aroma, and texture, particularly for older adults. These results demonstrate the feasibility and safety of valorizing agri-waste into functional ingredients. The process was guided by the Transformative Circular Product Blueprint, which integrates clean-label processing, IoT-enabled solar drying, and decentralized production. This model supports traceability, low energy use, and adaptation at the community scale. This study contributes to sustainable food innovation and aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Terahertz (THz) communications and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) hold the potential to energize battery-less Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices while enabling multi-gigabit data transmission. However, severe path loss, blockages, and rectifier nonlinearity significantly hinder both throughput and harvested energy. Additionally, high-power THz beams pose safety concerns by potentially exceeding specific absorption rate (SAR) limits. We propose a sensing-adaptive power-focusing (APF) framework in which a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) embeds low-rate THz sensors. Real-time backscatter measurements construct a spatial map used for the joint optimisation of (i) RIS phase configurations, (ii) multi-tone SWIPT waveforms, and (iii) nonlinear power-splitting ratios. A weighted MMSE inner loop maximizes the data rate, while an outer alternating optimisation applies semidefinite relaxation to enforce passive-element constraints and SAR compliance. Full-stack simulations at 0.3 THz with 20 GHz bandwidth and up to 256 RIS elements show that APF (i) improves the rate–energy Pareto frontier by 30–75% over recent adaptive baselines; (ii) achieves a 150% gain in harvested energy and a 440 Mbps peak per-user rate; (iii) reduces energy-efficiency variance by half while maintaining a Jain fairness index of 0.999;; and (iv) caps SAR at 1.6 W/kg, which is 20% below the IEEE C95.1 safety threshold. The algorithm converges in seven iterations and executes within <3 ms on a Cortex-A78 processor, ensuring compliance with real-time 6G control budgets. The proposed architecture supports sustainable THz-powered networks for smart factories, digital-twin logistics, wire-free extended reality (XR), and low-maintenance structural health monitors, combining high-capacity communication, safe wireless power transfer, and carbon-aware operation for future 6G cyber–physical systems. The air quality within urban public transport is a critical determinant of passenger health. In the crowded and poorly ventilated cabins of Almaty’s metro, buses, and trolleybuses, concentrations of CO2 and PM2.5 often accumulate, elevating the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This study investigates the air quality along three of the city’s busiest transport corridors, analyzing how the concentrations of CO2, PM2.5, and PM10, as well as the temperature and relative humidity, fluctuate with the passenger density and time of day. Continuous measurements were collected using the Tynys mobile IoT device, which was bench-calibrated against a commercial reference sensor. Several machine learning models (logistic regression, decision tree, XGBoost, and random forest) were trained on synchronized environmental and occupancy data, with the XGBoost model achieving the highest predictive accuracy at 91.25%. Our analysis confirms that passenger occupancy is the primary driver of in-cabin pollution and that these machine learning models effectively capture the nonlinear relationships among environmental variables. Since the surveyed routes serve Almaty’s most densely populated districts, improving the ventilation on these lines is of immediate importance to public health. Furthermore, the high-temporal-resolution data revealed short-term pollution spikes that correspond with peak ridership, advancing the current understanding of exposure risks in transit. These findings highlight the urgent need to combine real-time monitoring with ventilation upgrades. They also demonstrate the practical value of using low-cost IoT technologies and data-driven analytics to safeguard public health in urban mobility systems. Full article

Smart home technology enhances the quality of life, particularly with respect to in-home care and health monitoring. While video-based methods provide accurate behavior analysis, privacy concerns drive interest in non-visual alternatives. This study proposes a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-enabled indoor positioning and behavior recognition system, integrating machine learning techniques to support sustainable and privacy-preserving health monitoring. Key optimizations include: (1) a vertically mounted Data Collection Unit (DCU) for improved height positioning, (2) synchronized data collection to reduce discrepancies, (3) Kalman filtering to smooth RSSI signals, and (4) AI-based RSSI analysis for enhanced behavior recognition. Experiments in a real home environment used a smart wristband to assess BLE signal variations across different activities (standing, sitting, lying down). The results show that the proposed system reliably tracks user locations and identifies behavior patterns. This research supports elderly care, remote health monitoring, and non-invasive behavior analysis, providing a privacy-preserving solution for smart healthcare applications. Full article

Earthen flood protection structures are planned and constructed with an expected service life of several decades while being exposed to environmental impacts that may lead to structural or hydraulic failure. Current maintenance procedures involve only repairing external damage, leaving internal processes contributing to structural damage often undetected. Through structural health monitoring (SHM), structural deficits can be detected before visible damage occurs. To improve maintenance workflows and support predictive maintenance of dikes, this paper reports on the integration of digital twin concepts with SHM strategies, referred to as “digital-twin-based SHM”. A digital twin concept, including a standard-compliant building information model, is proposed and implemented in terms of a digital twin environment. For integrating monitoring and sensor data into the digital twin environment, a customized webform is designed. A communication protocol links preprocessed sensor data stored on a server with the digital twin environment, enabling model-based visualization and contextualization of the sensor data. As will be shown in this paper, a digital twin environment is set up and managed in the context of SHM in compliance with technical standards and using well-established software tools. In conclusion, digital-twin-based SHM, as proposed in this paper, has proven to advance predictive maintenance of dikes, contributing to the resilience of critical infrastructure against environmental impacts. Air quality monitoring systems based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology are critical for addressing environmental and public health challenges, but their energy efficiency poses a significant challenge to their autonomous and scalable deployment. This study investigates strategies to enhance the energy efficiency of IoT-based air quality monitoring systems. A comprehensive analysis of sensor types, data transmission protocols, and system architectures was conducted, focusing on their energy consumption. An energy-efficient system was designed using the Smart Air sensor, Zigbee gateway, and Mini UPS, with its performance evaluated through daily energy consumption, backup operation time, and annual energy use. An integrated efficiency index (IEI) was introduced to compare sensor models based on functionality, energy efficiency, and cost. The proposed system achieves a daily energy consumption of 72 W·h, supports up to 10 h of autonomous operation during outages, and consumes 26.28 kW·h annually. The IEI analysis identified the Ajax LifeQuality as the most energy-efficient sensor, while Smart Air offers a cost-effective alternative with broader functionality. The proposed architecture and IEI provide a scalable and sustainable framework for IoT air quality monitoring, with potential applications in smart cities and residential settings. Future research should explore renewable energy integration and predictive energy management. Full article

Timely and accurate identification of plant diseases is critical to mitigating crop losses and enhancing yield in precision agriculture. This paper proposes AgriFusionNet, a lightweight and efficient deep learning model designed to diagnose plant diseases using multimodal data sources. The framework integrates RGB and multispectral drone imagery with IoT-based environmental sensor data (e.g., temperature, humidity, soil moisture), recorded over six months across multiple agricultural zones. Built on the EfficientNetV2-B4 backbone, AgriFusionNet incorporates Fused-MBConv blocks and Swish activation to improve gradient flow, capture fine-grained disease patterns, and reduce inference latency. The model was evaluated using a comprehensive dataset composed of real-world and benchmarked samples, showing superior performance with 94.3% classification accuracy, 28.5 ms inference time, and a 30% reduction in model parameters compared to state-of-the-art models such as Vision Transformers and InceptionV4. Extensive comparisons with both traditional machine learning and advanced deep learning methods underscore its robustness, generalization, and suitability for deployment on edge devices. Ablation studies and confusion matrix analyses further confirm its diagnostic precision, even in visually ambiguous cases. The proposed framework offers a scalable, practical solution for real-time crop health monitoring, contributing toward smart and sustainable agricultural ecosystems. Full article

The rising demand for sustainable aquaculture necessitates innovative solutions to environmental and operational challenges. Biofloc technology (BFT) has emerged as an effective method, leveraging microbial communities to enhance water quality, reduce feed costs, and improve fish health. However, traditional BFT systems are susceptible to water quality fluctuations, demanding precise monitoring and control. This review explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in smart BFT systems, highlighting their capacity to automate processes, optimize resource utilization, and boost system performance. IoT devices facilitate real-time monitoring, while AI-driven analytics provide actionable insights for predictive management. We present a comparative analysis of AI models, such as LSTM, Random Forest, and SVM, for various aquaculture prediction tasks, emphasizing the importance of performance metrics like RMSE and MAE. Furthermore, we discuss the environmental and economic impacts, including quantitative case studies on cost reduction and productivity increases. This paper also addresses critical aspects of AI model reliability, interpretability (SHAP/LIME), uncertainty quantification, and failure mode analysis, advocating for robust testing protocols and human-in-the-loop systems. By addressing these challenges and exploring future opportunities, this article underscores the transformative potential of AI and IoT in advancing BFT for sustainable aquaculture practices, offering a pathway to more resilient and efficient food production. Proper nutrition is a fundamental aspect to maintaining overall health and well-being, influencing both physical and social aspects of human life; an unbalanced or inadequate diet can lead to various nutritional deficiencies and chronic health conditions. In today’s fast-paced world, monitoring nutritional intake has become increasingly important, particularly for those with specific dietary needs. While smartphone-based applications using image recognition have simplified food tracking, they still rely heavily on user interaction and raise concerns about practicality and privacy. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel, compact spectroscopic sensing platform for automatic beverage recognition. The system utilizes the AS7265x commercial sensor to capture the spectral signature of beverages, combined with a K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) machine learning algorithm for classification. The approach is designed for integration into everyday objects, such as smart glasses or cups, offering a noninvasive and user-friendly alternative to manual tracking. Through optimization of both the sensor configuration and KNN parameters, we identified a reduced set of four wavelengths that achieves over 96% classification accuracy across a diverse range of common beverages. This demonstrates the potential for embedding accurate, low-power, and cost-efficient sensors into Internet of Things (IoT) devices for real-time nutritional monitoring, reducing the need for user input while enhancing accessibility and usability. Air pollution poses a growing threat to public health and the environment, highlighting the need for continuous and precise urban air quality monitoring. The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate an autonomous air quality monitoring platform developed by the University of Ruse, “Angel Kanchev”, under Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (project BG-RRP-2.013-0001), co-financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU initiative. The system, based on Libelium’s mobile sensor technology, was installed at a height of two meters on the university campus near Rodina Boulevard and operated continuously from 1 March 2024 to 30 March 2025. Every 15 min, it recorded concentrations of CO, CO2, NO2, SO2, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, along with meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, and pressure), transmitting the data via GSM to a cloud-based database. Analyses included a distributional assessment, Spearman rank correlations, Kruskal–Wallis tests with Dunn–Sidak post hoc comparisons, and k-means clustering to identify temporal and meteorological patterns in pollutant levels. The results indicate the high operational stability of the system and reveal characteristic pollution profiles associated with time of day, weather conditions, and seasonal variation. The findings confirm the value of combining calibrated IoT systems with advanced statistical methods to support data-driven air quality management and the development of predictive environmental models.
