Lotus corniculatus L. is a valuable fodder legume, recognized for its ecological adaptability and high potential for production and fodder quality. In this study, 18 genotypes collected from wild flora were analyzed to highlight genetic variability and facilitate the selection of genotypes with superior potential. The collection area was in the western part of Romania and featured a diverse topography, including parts of the Banat Plain, the Banat Hills, and the Southern and Western Carpathians. The genotypes selected from the wild flora were cultivated and evaluated for morpho-productive and forage quality traits, including pod weight, average number of seeds/pods, green mass production, and protein percentage. PCA highlighted the main components explaining the variability, and K-means clustering allowed for the identification of groups of genotypes with similar performances. ANOVA showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) for all traits analyzed. According to the results, genotypes LV-LC-3, LV-LC-4, LV-LC-6, and LV-LC-16 showed high productive potential and were highlighted as the most valuable for advancing in the breeding program. The moderate relationships between traits confirm the importance of integrated selection. The identified genetic variability and selected genotypes support the implementation of effective breeding strategies to obtain high-performance Lotus corniculatus L., adapted to local soil and climate conditions and with a superior forage yield. Leaves, the main by-product of lingonberry harvesting, can be effectively used as a functional feed additive due to their health-promoting properties. This study evaluated the effects of lingonberry leaf (LL) supplementation on rumen fermentation, protozoal populations, and gastrointestinal morphology in sheep. Eight one-year-old Polish Mountain Sheep ewes (mean body weight: 33 kg) were allocated to a control (basal diet; forage-to-concentrate ratio 60:40) or an experimental group (basal diet + 9.30 g/kg DM dried LLs) in a completely randomised design (n = 4 per group) over 34 days. Both diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous. LL additive significantly reduced Isotrichidae protozoal counts (p < 0.001) and ruminal pectinolytic activity (p = 0.043), without altering short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) or methane concentrations (p > 0.1). Histological analyses showed increased ruminal papilla width and surface area (p < 0.001) and decreased duodenal villus height and muscular layer thickness (p < 0.01). Inflammatory lesions (reddish foci) were identified in the liver in both groups. These findings demonstrate that LL supplementation affected specific protozoal population, fibrolytic activity, and gastrointestinal morphology. Further study on a larger number of animals is recommended to validate the effects and assess the safety and efficacy of LLs as a dietary additive in ruminant nutrition. Full article

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly adopted in urban settings to restore ecological functions and enhance biodiversity. This study evaluates the effects of NbS interventions on bird, insect, and plant communities in the Cavalum Valley urban green area, Penafiel (northern Portugal). Over a three-year period, systematic field surveys assessed changes in species richness, abundance, and ecological indicators following actions such as riparian restoration, afforestation, habitat diversification, and invasive species removal. Results revealed a marked increase in bird overall abundance from 538 to 941 individuals and in average pollinator population size from 9.25 to 12.20. Plant diversity also improved, with a rise in native and RELAPE-listed species (5.23%). Functional group analyses underscored the importance of vegetative structure in supporting varied foraging and nesting behaviours. These findings highlight the effectiveness of integrated NbS in enhancing biodiversity and ecological resilience in urban landscapes while reinforcing the need for long-term monitoring to guide adaptive management and conservation planning. Future work could evaluate ecological resilience thresholds and community participation in citizen science monitoring. Full article

Modified nano-clays, alone or combined with probiotics, may offer a novel and sustainable approach to improve ruminal fermentation and mitigate CH4 emissions in high-fiber diets. This study evaluated the properties and effects of modified nano-bentonite (MNB), with or without yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), compared to natural bentonite (NB) and monensin, using the in vitro gas production (GP) technique. The substrate used was a basal diet composed primarily of forage (Trifolium alexandrinum clover) in a 70:30 forage-to-concentrate ratio. The treatments were a control group receiving the basal diet without additives; a monensin-added diet containing 40 mg/kg of dry matter (DM); a yeast-added diet with Saccharomyces cerevisiae at 2 × 108 CFU/g of DM; a NB clay-added diet at 5 g/kg of DM; and MNB diets added at two levels (0.5 g/kg of DM (MNBLow) and 1 g/kg of DM (MNBHigh)), with or without S. cerevisiae. MNB showed a smaller particle size and improved properties, such as higher conductivity, surface area, and cation exchange capacity, than NB. Sulfur and related functional groups were detected only in MNB. No differences were observed in total GP, while both the monensin diet and the MNBHigh-with-yeast diet significantly reduced CH4 emissions compared to the control (p < 0.05). The MNBHigh-without-yeast combination significantly (p < 0.05) reduced hemicellulose degradation, as well as total protozoal counts, including Isotricha and Epidinium spp. (p < 0.05), compared to the control. Ammonia levels did not differ significantly among treatments, while NB and MNBHigh diets tended to have (p = 0.063) the highest short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations. These findings suggest the potential modulatory effects of yeast and MNB on rumen fermentation dynamics and CH4 mitigation. Full article

The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of two dietary regimens, characterized by different forage-to-concentrate ratios, on feed intake, milk yield and composition, as well as economic and environmental sustainability in lactating buffalo cows. Group H was fed a high-forage diet, while Group L was fed a diet with a lower forage-to-concentrate ratio. Despite a lower energy value (Unit for Feed Lactation: UFL 0.89 vs. 0.91), the diet of group H met the animals’ nutritional requirements, with similar dry matter intake (DMI) and body condition scores observed in both groups. While there was no significant difference in milk yield, protein, and lactose, group H exhibited significantly higher milk fat content and an enhanced fatty acid profile, characterized by increased oleic acid, conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids have been linked to potential health benefits in humans, including anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and anticarcinogenic effects. From an economic perspective, the H group’s diet was found to be more cost-effective, resulting in EUR 0.46 savings per head per day and a higher yield of mozzarella cheese. From an environmental perspective, the high-forage diet reduced reliance on imported concentrates and irrigation-dependent crops, aligning with sustainable development goals. In conclusion, increasing the forage content in buffalo diets has been demonstrated to support animal performance, improve milk quality, reduce environmental impact, and enhance economic returns for producers. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with organic oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil (OEO) on the rumen microbial population, with a focus on methanogenic archaea, in lactating dairy goats. A total of nine age-matched goats (mean body weight 49 ± 1.8 kg) were assigned to three experimental groups (n = 3 per group) in a completely randomized design. All animals were fed a basal diet consisting of a corn-based concentrate and a forage mix composed of alfalfa hay, wheat straw and corn silage. Group 1 was the control group while Groups 2 and 3 received an OEO supplement at dosages of 1 mL/day and 2 mL/day per animal, respectively, incorporated into the concentrate feed. Rumen fluid samples were collected on days 15, 30 and 45 of the feeding trial and their microbial profile was assessed using NGS analysis. The results demonstrated a reduction in the relative abundance of methanobacteria in both OEO-supplemented groups compared to the control group. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between feeding groups and days of sampling. These findings suggest that OEO has the potential to modulate the rumen microbiome by reducing methane-producing archaeal populations. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with OEO may serve as a natural strategy to mitigate enteric methane emissions in Alpine dairy goats. Full article

Rumen microbiota and metabolites play important roles in energy metabolism and immune regulation in the host. However, the underlying mechanisms of their interaction with the host to regulate yak plateau adaptation remain unknown. In this study, the effects of altitude on the rumen microbiome, metabolome, and fermentation parameters of yaks were analyzed. The fiber content of pasture grasses increased with altitude, while crude protein content was significantly higher at an altitude of 2800 m (T2800) compared to an altitude of 4500 m (T4500) (p < 0.05). The acetic acid, propionic acid, and volatile fatty acids of yaks in the T4500 group were significantly higher than in the T2800 group (p < 0.05). Simpson’s index of rumen microorganisms in the T4500 group of yaks was significantly higher than in T2800 and T3500 yaks. The relative abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and Succiniclasticum was significantly higher in T4500 than in T2800, while Prevotella and Streptococcus were more abundant in T2800 than in T4500. Rumen metabolomics analyses revealed that yak rumen metabolites at different altitudes were influenced by forage and altitude, mainly affecting energy metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis (such as purine and glycerophospholipid metabolism). In summary, altitude may influence rumen microbes and metabolites through pasture nutrient composition. Full article

As a typical agricultural waste, the resource utilization of corn stover (CS) plays a crucial role in the coordinated optimization of ecological and economic benefits. In order to enhance the utilization of CS resources, Lentilactobacillus (L.) buchneri (LB) and different proportions of Artemisia argyi (AA) were added to CS to investigate the impact of additives on the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of corn stover silage (CSS). This study revealed that the separate addition of AA or LB in CS effectively improved the silage quality and aerobic stability. Specifically, LB exhibited the lowest pH value of 3.72 at 90 d of fermentation, while the NH3-N content was 0.07 g/kg DM during the anaerobic fermentation stage and 0.19 g/kg DM during the aerobic exposure stage (p < 0.05). Mixing 30% AA increased the lactic acid content, lowered the pH, maintained a higher relative abundance of Lactobacillus, and reduced mycotoxin levels. In terms of aerobic stability, all AA-treated groups demonstrated superior performance compared to the LB treatment. Additionally, it was observed, that in the 30% AA group, Candida exhibited the highest relative abundance. Importantly, the addition of AA upregulated carbohydrate metabolism and lipid metabolism during the ensiling process, and their relative abundances remained high during aerobic exposure. Fully utilizing CS resources as feed to provide fiber and nutrients for ruminants can not only reduce the pressure on forage demand but meet the development needs of “grain-saving” animal husbandry, which is conducive to solving the contradictions of “human–animal competition for food” and “human animal competition for land”. Many life history traits show predictable patterns at broad biogeographical scales, yet much less is known about how behavioural traits vary across such gradients. In this study, I investigated global variation in foraging group size within a large, cosmopolitan avian family—the pigeons—and assessed the roles of climate and predation in shaping these patterns. I compiled data from the literature for species occurring across a range of latitudes, altitudes, and habitats (islands v. continents) and analyzed the data within a phylogenetic framework that accounted for both biogeographical and ecological drivers of group size. Foraging group size increased with latitude among continental species but did not follow these trends on islands, where groups were generally smaller. Group size also increased at higher elevations. Among the climatic variables examined, annual temperature variation emerged as the strongest latitudinal predictor: greater temperature variability was associated with larger group sizes in continental species, but not in island species. The number of predators within a species’ breeding range showed no significant relationship with group size. These findings suggest that climatic variability, rather than number of predators, is a key driver of foraging group size in pigeons at the biogeographical scale. Full article

Among various plants, corn is the primary host damaged by Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). After long-term regional colonization, its larvae feed on sweet waxy corn and fresh corn for extended periods. A question arises: Does long-term feeding on different corn varieties affect their rhythms? Currently, there are no reports addressing these issues. To facilitate the formulation of effective prevention and control measures, Zhengdan 958 and Zhenghuangnuo were selected as representative varieties of normal and sweet waxy corn, respectively, for laboratory experiments. S. frugiperda were fed the leaves of these two corn types over nine consecutive generations, thereby establishing distinct S. frugiperda strains associated with each corn variety. Additionally, a strain fed an artificial diet served as the control group. Through a comparative analysis of the emergence, movement, nutritional foraging, dormancy, mating, and oviposition behaviors of adult fall armyworms from different populations, differences in the six behavioral peak times among the strains were identified. RT-qPCR analysis indicated significant differences in the expression levels of four circadian clock genes across different populations and tissues of the fall armyworm. Feeding on different host plants influenced the expression of circadian clock genes and their associated behavioral rhythms. Our study showed that sweet corn is more conducive to pupation, mating, and oviposition. Because of these differences in adult insect rhythms, sweet corn may have an impact on the reproduction of fall armyworms in the Huang–Huai–Hai corn-planting region. Full article

In the Gulf of California, seabirds carry heavy loads to feed their chicks, making their takeoff capacity crucial for foraging. While some studies explore this, few consider the lift force, induced power, or aerobic vs. anaerobic performance. Moreover, the differences between individuals—such as size or sex—remain largely unexamined, leaving gaps in the understanding of seabird flight efficiency. In this work, the load capacity during takeoff of the Least Storm-Petrel (LSP) and the Black Storm-Petrel (BSP) in Isla Partida Norte, Gulf of California, was analyzed. Forty-nine individuals of the Least Storm-Petrel group and 23 of the Black Storm-Petrel group were evaluated. In both species, the carrying capacity was found to be independent of individual size, but the Least Storm-Petrel managed to take off with a higher proportion of its total mass than the Black Storm-Petrel. Although smaller, LSPs lift more than BSPs, and environmental factors like El Niño also influence seabird performance. This study found that both storm-petrel species were smaller and lighter than previously reported; yet, LSPs carried relatively heavier loads than BSPs. Although BSPs had higher absolute values for mass and lift, LSPs were more energy-efficient. The muscle mass proportions were similar and typical for takeoff. No significant sex-based differences were found. Both species used aerobic and anaerobic takeoff, with anaerobic flight likely being more efficient. Full article

The development of wireless technology and the desire to improve communication electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of various frequencies have become common across the honey bee’s foraging landscape. There has been discussion for many years about the possible impact of electromagnetic fields on living organisms. Artificial radio fields emit frequencies ranging from 100 kHz to 300 GHz. The presented research aimed to demonstrate the influence of the radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) with a frequency of 900 MHz on the behavior of honey bees in laboratory conditions. For this experiment, we used wooden cages to house honey bee workers immediately after they emerged. Bee workers were divided into control and experimental groups. Bees in the control group were not exposed to RF fields, while the experimental groups were exposed to 900 MHz electromagnetic fields of different intensities and durations of exposure. Bees’ behavior was analyzed with an appropriate computer program. Behavioral analysis of bees was performed immediately after exposure and seven days after exposure. Our research has shown that the radio field (900 MHz) affects the behavior of bees compared to the control group, although not all results are statistically significant. Effect of Mixed Lactic Acid Bacteria on Silage Quality and In Vitro Digestibility of 16 Oat Forage Varieties in Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

The production of artificial planted forage is important for the development of animal husbandry in the Qinghai–-Tibet Plateau, and oat forage is one of the main artificial planted forages in the area. However, the suitable oat varieties for harvesting and preparing silage feed in this region are still unclear. To investigate suitable oat forage varieties for silage production and the potential feeding value of different oat forage varieties, 16 oat forage varieties planted in Qinghai Province were selected in this experiment. These oat forages were subjected to two treatments: a group with no inoculants (CK) and a group with self-selected lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculants (IN). After 90 days of ensiling, silage quality and in vitro digestibility of the 16 oat forage varieties were determined. The results showed that all oat forage varieties ferment well after ensiling (pH < 4), the CK group had a silage pH range of 3.62–3.95, and the IN group had a silage pH range of 3.68–3.83. Tianyan No.1, Qingtian No.2, and Tianyan No.3 were in the top three in RFV and RFQ rankings in the CK group, while Qinghai 444, Tianyan No.1, and Tianyan No.3 were in the lead in GI rankings. Tianyan No.1, Qingtian No.2, and Everleaf 126 were in the lead in RFV and RFQ rankings in the IN group, while Qinghai 444, Titan, and Tianyan No.1 were in the top three in GI rankings. The dry matter digestibility and 72 h cumulative gas production of the IN group were higher than that of the CK group (p < 0.05). Based on principal component analysis and membership function comprehensive evaluation, Tianyan No.1, Qinghai 444, and Tianyan No.3 ranked the top three, demonstrating that these three oat forage varieties are suitable for silage processing in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau region. Spider Web DNA Metabarcoding Provides Improved Insight into the Prey Capture Ability of the Web-Building Spider Tetragnatha keyserlingi Simon (Araneae: Tetragnathidae)

Spiders play a crucial role as predators in terrestrial ecosystems, particularly in controlling insect populations. Tetragnatha keyserlingi Simon (Araneae: Tetragnathidae) is a dominant species in rice field ecosystems, where it builds webs amidst rice clusters to capture prey. Despite its known predation on major rice pests like rice planthoppers, comprehensive field reports on its prey composition are scarce. Herein, we performed a field investigation to explore the population dynamic relationships between T. keyserlingi and major rice pests. Additionally, we employed DNA metabarcoding to analyze the prey spectrum of this spider from both the spider’s opisthosoma and its web. The results showed that the population dynamics of T. keyserlingi and Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) displayed synchrony. Dietary DNA metabarcoding analysis revealed that, compared with the opisthosoma, DNA extracted from spider webs exhibited a higher abundance of prey reads and yielded a higher diversity of identified prey species. Phytophagous pests were the dominant prey group identified in both sample types. In web samples, the most abundant prey reads were from Chironomidae, followed by Delphacidae, Ceratopogonidae, Aleyrodidae, Muscidae, Coenagrionidae, and other prey families. Notably, Delphacidae constituted the predominant prey reads identified from the spider’s opisthosoma, and the corresponding positive rate for Delphacidae was 86.7%. These results indicate that the web of T. keyserlingi can capture a diverse range of prey in rice fields. Among the prey captured by the spider web, rice planthoppers appear to be a primary dietary component of T. keyserlingi, emphasizing its potential as a biocontrol agent for rice planthoppers in integrated pest management strategies. Leveraging spider web DNA metabarcoding enhances our understanding of T. keyserlingi’s prey capture ability, as the residual prey DNA in webs provides critical insights into the foraging dynamics and ecological interactions of web-building spiders. Comprehensive Assessment of Alfalfa Aluminum Stress Resistance Using Growth and Physiological Trait Analysis

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is an important perennial leguminous forage; however, its high sensitivity to aluminum (Al) stress severely restricts its cultivation in regions with acidic soil. Therefore, this study conducted an integrated assessment of Al stress tolerance by performing systematic evaluations of 11 growth and physiological parameters across 30 alfalfa cultivars under Al stress, and calculated the Al tolerance coefficients based on these parameters. The results revealed that Al stress markedly inhibited root growth and biomass accumulation in alfalfa, thereby triggering increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in roots across most cultivars, the scope of increase is 0.19–183.07%. Moreover, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) increased by 7.50–121.44%, 2.50–135.89%, and 3.84–70.01%, respectively. Based on the comprehensive evaluation value (D) obtained via principal component analysis and membership function, the 30 alfalfa cultivars were categorized into four distinct groups: 4 highly Al-tolerant cultivars, 11 moderately high-Al-tolerant cultivars, 9 moderately low-Al-tolerant cultivars, and 6 low-Al-tolerant cultivars. Stepwise linear regression analysis identified root elongation rate, root-to-shoot ratio, root volume, SOD, MDA, CAT, root dry weight, POD, and root length as pivotal indicators for predicting and evaluating Al stress tolerance in alfalfa cultivars. The qRT-PCR analysis showed dynamic changes in ABC transporter gene expression in alfalfa roots over time under aluminum stress. Therefore, this study comprehensively evaluated Al tolerance by systematically investigating the morphophysiological effects of Al stress across 30 alfalfa cultivars using principal component analysis (PCA), membership function, and hierarchical clustering analysis. It provides a practical solution for expanding alfalfa planting in acid soil and improving feed production in acidic environments. Full article
