Fiber-reinforced composites are gaining more importance across different fields such as aeronautics, automotives, high-performance sporting equipment, etc., where decreasing weight while improving mechanical properties of polymers is fundamental. This article explores the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced polyester composite materials, highlighting their advantages and applications in various industrial fields. Usually, composite materials consist of a polyester matrix reinforced with different types of fibers, such as glass, carbon, or Kevlar, which provide superior mechanical characteristics. This study analyzed the tensile strength, bending resistance, and resilience of glass fiber composites, emphasizing the importance of proper fiber selection and manufacturing processes. These materials stand out for their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and are widely used in the fabrication of tanks in various industries. Experimental results demonstrated tensile strength (Rm) around 115 MPa, Shore D hardness values of 88 units, and impact toughness (resilience) of 2.7 J/cm2. Based on the composite materials’ behavior in testing, the article further offers practical recommendations for the effective deployment of these composites in the fabrication of various types of industrial reservoirs. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites exhibit significant advantages over conventional structural webbing materials, including lightweight and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the localized compression performance of the proposed GFRP grid web–concrete composite beam through experimental and numerical analyses. Three specimen groups with variable shear-span ratios (λ = 1.43, 1.77) and local stiffener specimens were designed to assess their localized compressive behavior. Experimental results reveal that a 19.2% reduction in shear-span ratio enhances ultimate load capacity by 22.93% and improves stiffness by 66.85%, with additional performance gains of 77.53% in strength and 94.29% in stiffness achieved through local stiffener implementation. In addition, finite element (FE) analysis demonstrated a strong correlation with experimental results, showing less than 5% deviation in ultimate load predictions while accurately predicting stress distributions and failure modes. FE parametric analysis showed that increasing the grid thickness and decreasing the grid spacing within a reasonable range can considerably enhance the localized compression performance. The proposed analytical model, based on Winkler elastic foundation theory, predicts ultimate compression capacities within 10% of both the experimental and numerical results. However, the GFRP grid strength adjustment factor βg should be further refined through additional experiments and numerical analyses to improve reliability. Full article

This study aims to clarify the longitudinal flexural cracking characteristics in hogging moment regions and propose a practical calculation method for the cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity for a steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite deck structure. The longitudinal flexural behavior of two steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite beams in the hogging moment region is determined through a three-point loading test method. Their failure modes and mechanisms, crack propagation and distribution characteristics are analyzed considering the influence of the reinforcement ratio. The variation of the law of mid-span displacement, maximum crack width, strains and interface slip with load are discussed. Calculation methods for the cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of steel–GFRP strips–UHPC composite beams are proposed. The results show that with the increase of the reinforcement ratio, the cracking load and ultimate bending capacity are improved by 11.1% and 6.0%, respectively. However, the development of cracks is inhibited, as the crack width, average crack spacing and strain of the reinforcement bars are reduced as the reinforcement ratio increases. The maximum crack width changes linearly with the load as it is less than 0.2 mm. The theoretical cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of the composite beams considering the tensile contribution of UHPC achieve good agreement with the experimental values. Full article

The construction industry is exploring alternatives to traditional steel reinforcement in concrete due to steel’s corrosion vulnerability. Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) and Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP), known for their high tensile strength and corrosion resistance, are viable options. This study evaluates the flexural performance of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP, BFRP, and hybrid systems combining these materials with steel, following ACI 440.1R-15 guidelines. Twelve beams were assessed under three-point bending to compare their flexural strength, ductility, and failure modes against steel reinforcement. The results indicate that GFRP and BFRP beams achieve 8% and 12% higher ultimate load capacities but 38% and 58% lower deflections at failure than steel, respectively. Hybrid reinforcements enhance both load capacity and deflection performance (7% to 17% higher load with 11% to 58% lower deflection). However, GFRP and BFRP beams show reduced energy absorption, suggesting that hybrid systems could better support critical applications like seismic and impact-prone structures by improving ductility and load handling. In addition, BFRP beams predominantly failed due to debonding and concrete crushing, while GFRP beams failed due to bar rupture, reflecting key differences in their flexural failure mechanisms. This study focuses on the influence of prolonged ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the mechanical properties and surface microstructure of glass fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) and basalt fiber-reinforced plastics (BFRPs), which are widely used in construction and transport infrastructure. The relevance of the research lies in the need to improve the reliability of composite materials under extended exposure to harsh climatic conditions. Experimental tests were conducted in a laboratory UV chamber over 2000 h, simulating accelerated weathering. Mechanical properties were evaluated using three-point bending, while surface conditions were assessed via profilometry and microscopy. It was shown that GFRPs exhibit a significant reduction in flexural strength—down to 59–64% of their original value—accompanied by increased surface roughness and microdefect depth. The degradation mechanism of GFRPs is attributed to the photochemical breakdown of the polymer matrix, involving free radical generation, bond scission, and oxidative processes. To verify these mechanisms, FTIR spectroscopy was employed, which enabled the identification of structural changes in the polymer phase and the detection of mass loss associated with matrix decomposition. In contrast, BFRP retained up to 95% of their initial strength, demonstrating high resistance to UV-induced aging. This is attributed to the shielding effect of basalt fibers and their ability to retain moisture in microcavities, which slows the progress of photo-destructive processes. Comparison with results from natural exposure tests under extreme climatic conditions (Yakutsk) confirmed the reliability of the accelerated aging model used in the laboratory. Full article

Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars are becoming increasingly common in structural engineering applications due to their superior material properties, mainly their resistance to corrosion due to their metallic nature in comparison to steel reinforcement and their improved durability in alkaline environments compared to CFRP and BFRP reinforcement. However, GFRP bars also suffer from a few limitations. One of the main issues that affects the performance of GFRP reinforcing bars is their bond with concrete, which may differ from the bond between traditional steel bars and concrete. However, despite the wide attention of researchers, there has not been a critical review of the recent research progress on bond behavior between GFRP bars and concrete. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of research on bond in GFRP-reinforced concrete in an attempt to systematize the existing scientific knowledge. The study summarizes experimental investigations that directly measure bond strength and investigates the different factors that influence it. Additionally, an overview of the analytical and empirical models used to simulate bond behavior is then presented. The findings indicate the dependence of the bond on several factors that include bar diameter, bar surface, concrete strength, and embedment length. Additionally, it was concluded that both traditional and more recent bond models do not explicitly account for the effect of different factors, which highlights the need for improved bond models that do not require calibration with experimental tests. Natural-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites are gaining increasing interest as lightweight, sustainable alternatives for various packaging and applications. This study investigates the effect of filler addition sequence on the mechanical, morphological, thermal, and dynamic mechanical properties of PP-based composites reinforced with graphite nanoplatelets (GnP) and kenaf fiber (KF). Two filler incorporation sequences were evaluated: GnP/KF/PP (GnP initially mixed with KF before PP addition) and GnP/PP/KF (KF added after mixing GnP with PP). The GnP/KF/PP composite exhibited superior mechanical properties, with tensile strength and flexural strength increasing by up to 25% compared to the control, while GnP/PP/KF showed a 13% improvement. SEM analyses revealed that initial mixing of GnP with KF significantly improved filler dispersion and interfacial bonding, enhancing stress transfer within the composite. XRD and DSC analyses showed reduced crystallinity and lower crystallization temperatures in the addition of KF due to restricted polymer chain mobility. Thermal stability assessed by TGA indicated minimal differences between the composites regardless of filler sequence. DMA results demonstrated a significantly higher storage modulus and enhanced elastic response in the addition of KF, alongside a slight decrease in glass transition temperature (Tg). The results emphasize the importance of optimizing filler addition sequences to enhance mechanical performance, confirming the potential of these composites in sustainable packaging and structural automotive applications. Increased concern for human health and the environment has pushed various industries to adopt new approaches towards satisfying modern regulations. Strategies to achieve these approaches include utilizing lightweight materials, repurposing waste materials, and substituting synthetic polymers with bio-based counterparts. This study investigates the effects of treated fly ash (C) and bio-based polyamide 10.10 (PA10) on the thermal, morphological, and mechanical properties of glass fiber (GF)-reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6). Our main objective was to develop a composite that would allow for the partial replacement of glass fiber in reinforced polyamide 6 composites (PA6-30G) while maintaining a favorable balance of mechanical properties. Composites processed via melt processing demonstrated enhanced mechanical properties compared to PA6-30G. Notably, significant improvements were observed in impact strength and tensile strain at break. The addition of PA10 resulted in increases of 18% in impact strength and 35% in tensile strain relative to PA6-30G. Complementary, structural and morphological analyses confirmed strong interfacial interactions within the composite matrix. These findings indicate that a PA6/PA10 hybrid composite may represent a viable alternative material for potential automotive applications. Full article

Flying wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are an interesting flight configuration, considering its benefits over aerodynamic, structural and added stealth aspects. The existing configurations are thoroughly studied from the literature survey and useful observations with respect to design and analysis are obtained. The proposed design method includes distinct calculations of the UAV and modelling using 3D experience. The created innovative models are simulated with the help of computational fluid dynamics techniques in ANSYS Fluent to obtain the aerodynamic parameters such as forces, pressure and velocity. The optimization process continues to add more desired modifications to the model, to finalize the best design of flying wing frame for the chosen application and mission profile. In total, nine models are developed starting with the base model, then leading to the conventional, advanced and nature inspired configurations such as the falcon and dragonfly models, as it has an added advantage of producing high maneuverability and lift. Following this, fluid structure interaction analysis has been performed for the best performing configurations, resulting in the determination of variations in the structural behavior with the imposition of advanced composite materials, namely, boron, Kevlar, glass and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers. In addition to this, a hybrid material is designed by combining two composites that resulted in superior material performance when imposed. Control dynamic study is performed for the maneuvers planned as per mission profile, to ensure stability during flight. All the resulting parameters obtained are compared with one another to choose the best frame of the flying wing body, along with the optimum material to be utilized for future analysis and development. This paper outlines a structural qualification process to assess the use of newly developed high-modulus (HM) glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars with headed ends in the joint between concrete bridge barriers and decks. The main goals of the study are to evaluate the structural performance of GFRP-reinforced TL-5 barrier–deck systems under transverse loading and to determine the pullout capacity of GFRP anchorage systems for both new construction and retrofit applications. The research is divided into two phases. In the first phase, six full-scale Test-Level 5 (TL-5) barrier wall–deck specimens, divided into three systems, were constructed and tested up to failure. The first system used headed-end GFRP bars to connect the barrier wall to a non-deformable thick deck slab. The second system was similar to the first but had a deck slab overhang for improved anchorage. The third system utilized postinstalled GFRP bars in a non-deformable thick deck slab, bonded with a commercial epoxy adhesive as a solution for deteriorated barrier replacement. The second phase involves an experimental program to evaluate the pullout strength of the GFRP bar anchorage in normal-strength concrete. The experimental results from the tested specimens were then compared to the factored applied moments in existing literature based on traffic loads in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. Experimental results confirmed that GFRP-reinforced TL-5 barrier–deck systems exceeded factored design moments, with capacity-to-demand ratios above 1.38 (above 1.17 with the inclusion of an environmental reduction factor of 0.85). A 195 mm embedment length proved sufficient for both pre- and postinstalled bars. Headed-end GFRP bars improved pullout strength compared to straight-end bars, especially when bonded. Failure modes occurred at high loads, demonstrating structural integrity. Postinstalled bars bonded with epoxy performed comparably to preinstalled bars. A design equation for the barrier resistance due to a diagonal concrete crack at the barrier–deck corner was developed and validated using experimental findings. This equation offers a conservative and safe design approach for evaluating barrier–deck anchorage. Full article

This study investigates the thermal performance of 23 different mortar types, each containing different mixes, properties, and additives. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to collect experimental data on the thermal properties of these mortars, which were then used in a numerical analysis through thermal finite element modeling. The results showed that all mortar types contributed to reducing the internal temperature of structural steel and reinforced concrete elements, with performance primarily influenced by key factors such as the mortar’s thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and coating thickness. In particular, the mortar with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) as a slag substitute and the mortar with expanded perlite replacing sand showed the highest thermal protection and achieved a temperature reduction on the order of 100%. In contrast, mortars containing 30% vermiculite or 15% light expanded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a sand substitute showed the lowest thermal performance. Full article

With the growing need for lightweight, durable, and high-performance structures, additively manufactured (AM) polymer composite structures have captured significant attention in the engineering community. These structures offer considerable advantages in various dynamic engineering sectors including automotive, aviation, and military. Thus, this investigation emphasizes the numerical analysis of the dynamic properties and vibration control of AM polylactic acid (PLA) composite structures reinforced with continuous glass fibers (CGFR-PLA) and carbon fibers (CCFR-PLA), with 0°–0° and 0°–90° layer orientations. The findings of this numerical study are compared and validated against earlier published experimental results. Initially, the numerical models were created using the Abaqus CAE 2024, replicating the actual experimental models. The numerical bending modal frequency of each numerical model is determined, and the 0°–0° oriented models exhibited considerably higher values compared to the corresponding 0°–90° models. Significant differences were noted between the numerical and experimental values in the higher modes, mainly due to existence of voids and misalignment in the actual models that were not considered in numerical models. Following this, a numerical amplitude frequency response (AFR) analysis was conducted to observe vibration amplitude variations as a function of frequency. The AFR numerical results demonstrated consistent trends with the experimental results despite differences between the absolute values of both scenarios. Afterwards, vibration amplitude control analysis was performed under the influence of a macro fiber composite (MFC) actuator. The findings from both numerical and experimental cases revealed that vibration control was noticeably higher in 0°–0° oriented structures compared to 0°–90° structures. Experimental models demonstrated higher vibration control effectiveness than the corresponding numerical models. Although significant differences between the numerical and experimental vibration response values were observed in each composite structure, the numerical results exhibited consistent trends with the experiments. This article provides an in-depth review of selected technical chains, with particular emphasis on link chains and their load transmission mechanisms. It explores structural and functional characteristics, highlighting how chain geometry affects stress distribution, fatigue life, and performance under various loading conditions. The study includes a detailed classification of chains by type, material, and application, ranging from steel-based lifting and transport chains to lightweight, corrosion-resistant polymer types. Manufacturing methods and connection techniques are also discussed, underscoring the importance of proper assembly for mechanical reliability. Special attention is given to the role of materials, particularly the emergence of polymer composites reinforced with glass or carbon fibers, which offer promising alternatives to conventional metals. Although such composites exhibit advantageous properties—such as low weight, corrosion resistance, and energy efficiency—their application remains limited, insufficient load-bearing capacity, and the absence of standardized design guidelines. The review identifies critical knowledge gaps in the field, especially concerning shaping, dimensioning, and normative requirements for polymer-based load-bearing chains. It also highlights the lack of focused research on chain-specific geometries and the need for numerical simulations to optimize link design. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of developing sustainable, durable, and standardized chain systems—particularly those utilizing recycled or novel materials—to meet both technical demands and environmental goals. This work supports future innovation in the design of advanced chain structures and provides a foundation for expanding the use of high-performance composites in civil and urban engineering applications. Long-Term Durability of CFRP Strips Used in Infrastructure Rehabilitation

Prefabricated unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite strips are extensively used as a means of infrastructure rehabilitation through adhesive bonding to the external surface of structural concrete elements. Most data to date are from laboratory tests ranging from a few months to 1–2 years providing an insufficient dataset for prediction of long-term durability. This investigation focuses on the assessment of the response of three different prefabricated CFRP systems exposed to water, seawater, and alkaline solutions for 5 years of immersion in deionized water conducted at three temperatures of 23, 37.8 and 60 °C, all well below the glass transition temperature levels. Overall response is characterized through tensile and short beam shear (SBS) testing at periodic intervals. It is noted that while the three systems are similar, with the dominant mechanisms of deterioration being related to matrix plasticization followed by fiber–matrix debonding with levels of matrix and interface deterioration being accelerated at elevated temperatures, their baseline characteristics and distributions are different emphasizing the need for greater standardization. While tensile modulus does not degrade appreciably over the 5-year period of exposure with final levels of deterioration being between 7.3 and 11.9%, both tensile strength and SBS strength degrade substantially with increasing levels based on temperature and time of immersion. Levels of tensile strength retention can be as low as 61.8–66.6% when immersed in deionized water at 60 °C, those for SBS strength can be 38.4–48.7% at the same immersion condition for the three FRP systems. Differences due to solution type are wider in the short-term and start approaching asymptotic levels within FRP systems at longer periods of exposure. The very high levels of deterioration in SBS strength indicate the breakdown of the materials at the fiber–matrix bond and interfacial levels. It is shown that the level of deterioration exceeds that presumed through design thresholds set by specific codes/standards and that new safety factors are warranted in addition to expanding the set of characteristics studied to include SBS or similar interface-level tests. Alkali solutions are also shown to have the highest deteriorative effects with deionized water having the least. Simple equations are developed to enable extrapolation of test data to predict long term durability and to develop design thresholds based on expectations of service life with an environmental factor of between 0.56 and 0.69 for a 50-year expected service life. Doping Carbon Coating on Glass Fiber to Enhance Its Reinforcing Potential in a Polymer Matrix

This research investigates a novel hybrid E-glass fiber coated with a thin amorphous carbon (coke) layer, referred to as GF@C, designed to enhance the affinity of fiber with a polymer matrix. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), an engineering thermoplastic, was selected as the matrix to form the composite. The carbon coating was produced by pyrolyzing a lubricant oil (Lo) layer applied to the glass fiber strands. To promote the formation of graphite crystallites during carbonization, a small amount (x wt.% of Lo) of coronene (Cor) was added to Lo as a dopant. The resulting doped fibers, denoted GF@CLo-Cor(x%), were embedded in ABS at 70 wt.%, leading to significant improvements in mechanical properties. At the optimal doping level (x = 5), the composite achieved a Young’s modulus of 1.02 GPa and a tensile strength of 6.96 MPa, substantially higher than the 0.4 GPa and 3.81 MPa observed for the composite with the pristine GF. This enhancement is attributed to a distribution of graphite crystallites and their graphitization extent in the carbon coating, which improves interfacial bonding and increases chain entanglement. Additionally, GF@CLo-Cor(x%)–ABS composites (x = 0 and 5) exhibit significantly higher dielectric constant–temperature profiles than GF–ABS, attributed to the formation of diverse chain adsorption states on the C-coating.
