A hybrid wave energy conversion (WEC) system, integrating a backward bent duct buoy (BBDB) with an oscillating buoy (OB) via a flexible mooring chain, is introduced in this study. Unlike existing hybrid WECs, the proposed system dispenses with rigid mechanical linkages and enables flexible offshore deployment. Flared BBDB and buoy models with spherical, cylindrical, and semi-capsule shapes are designed and tested experimentally in a wave flume using both regular and irregular wave conditions. The effects of nozzle ratio (NR), coupling distance, buoy draft, and buoy geometry are systematically examined to investigate the hydrodynamic performance and energy conversion characteristics. It is found that NR at 110 under unidirectional airflow produces an optimal balance between pressure response, free surface displacement, and energy conversion efficiency. Energy extraction is significantly influenced by the coupling distance, with the hybrid system achieving maximum performance at a specific normalized spacing. The semi-capsule buoy improves power extraction ability and expands effective bandwidth due to asymmetric shape and coupled motion. These findings provide valuable insights into the coupling mechanism and geometric optimization for hybrid WECs. Full article

A real-space renormalization group (RG) framework is formulated for classical SO(n) spin models defined on d-dimensional crystal lattices composed of corner-sharing hyper-tetrahedra, a class of geometrically frustrated crystal structures. This includes, as specific instances, the classical Heisenberg model on the kagome and pyrochlore crystals. The approach involves computing the partition function and corresponding order parameters for spin clusters embedded in the crystal, to leading order in symmetry-breaking fields generated by surrounding spins. The crystal geometry plays a central role in determining the scaling relations and the associated critical behavior. To illustrate the efficacy of the method, a reduced manifold of symmetry-allowed ordered states for isotropic nearest-neighbor interactions is analyzed. The RG flow systematically excludes the emergence of a q=0 ordered phase within the antiferromagnetic sector, independently of both the spatial dimensionality of the crystal and the number of spin components. Extensions to incorporate more elaborate crystal-symmetry-induced ordering patterns and fluctuation-driven phenomena—such as order-by-disorder—are also discussed. Full article

Real-Time Foreshock–Aftershock–Swarm Discrimination During the 2025 Seismic Crisis near Santorini Volcano, Greece: Earthquake Statistics and Complex Networks

The advanced determination of the type (foreshock–aftershock–swarm) of an ongoing seismic cluster is quite challenging; only retrospective solutions have thus far been proposed. In the period of January–March 2025, a seismic cluster, recorded between Santorini volcano and Amorgos Island, South Aegean Sea, caused considerable social concern. A rapid increase in both the seismicity rate and the earthquake magnitudes was noted until the mainshock of ML = 5.3 on 10 February; afterwards, activity gradually diminished. Fault-plane solutions indicated SW-NE normal faulting. The epicenters moved with a mean velocity of ~0.72 km/day from SW to NE up to the mainshock area at a distance of ~25 km. Crucial questions publicly emerged during the cluster. Was it a foreshock–aftershock activity or a swarm of possibly volcanic origin? We performed real-time discrimination of the cluster type based on a daily re-evaluation of the space–time–magnitude changes and their significance relative to background seismicity using earthquake statistics and the topological metric betweenness centrality. Our findings were periodically documented during the ongoing cluster starting from the fourth cluster day (2 February 2025), at which point we determined that it was a foreshock and not a case of seismic swarm. The third day after the ML = 5.3 mainshock, a typical aftershock decay was detected. The observed foreshock properties favored a cascade mechanism, likely facilitated by non-volcanic material softening and the likely subdiffusion processes in a dense fault network. This mechanism was possibly combined with an aseismic nucleation process if transient geodetic deformation was present. No significant aftershock expansion towards the NE was noted, possibly due to the presence of a geometrical fault barrier east of the Anydros Ridge. The 2025 activity offered an excellent opportunity to investigate deciphering the type of ongoing seismicity cluster for real-time discrimination between foreshocks, aftershocks, and swarms. We extend the theory of splits in finite metric spaces to infinite ones. Within this more general framework, we investigate the class of spaces having metrics that are integer-valued and totally split-decomposable, as well as the polyhedral complex structure of their injective hulls. For this class, we provide a characterization for the injective hull to be combinatorially equivalent to a CAT(0) cube complex. Intermediate results include the generalization of the decomposition theory introduced by Bandelt and Dress in 1992 as well as results on the tight span of totally split-decomposable metric spaces proved by Huber, Koolen, and Moulton in 2006. Next, using results of Lang from 2013, we obtain proper actions on CAT(0) cube complexes for finitely generated groups endowed with a totally split-decomposable word metric and for which the associated splits satisfy a simple combinatorial property. In the case of Gromov hyperbolic groups, the obtained action is both proper aand co-compact. Finally, we obtain as an application that injective hulls of odd cycles are cell complexes isomorphic to CAT(0) cube complexes. Full article

Line laser measurement, as a typical method of laser triangulation, makes the acquisition of 3D tooth-surface data more accurate, efficient, and informative. Thus, a line laser 3D measurement model of gears is established, and a specialized polyhedral artifact with specific geometric features is invented to determine the pose parameters of the line laser sensor in measuring space. Based on this, a single-spindle gear-measuring instrument is developed and a series of experimental studies are conducted for gears with different module and flank directions in this instrument, including profile deviation, helix deviation, pitch deviation, topological deviation, etc. A comparative experiment with traditional contact measurement methods validates the correctness of the methods mentioned in this paper for the accurate evaluation of tested gears. In further research, the mining and utilization of big data obtained from the line laser 3D measurement of gears will be an important topic. Full article

This study aims to clarify the nonlinear pressure loss patterns of the pneumatic system in a pneumatic seeder under varying pipeline structures and airflow parameters, and to develop a rapid prediction equation for the main pipe’s pressure loss. The studied multi-branch pipeline system consists of a main pipe, a header, and ten branch pipes. The main pipe is vertically installed at the center of the header in a straight-line configuration. The ten branch pipes are symmetrically and evenly spaced along the axial direction of the header, distributed on both sides of the main pipe. The outlet directions of the branch pipes are arranged in a 180° orientation opposite to the inlet direction of the main pipe, forming a symmetric multi-branch configuration. Firstly, this study investigated the flow characteristics within the multi-branch pipeline of the pneumatic system and elaborated on the mechanism of flow division in the pipeline. The key geometric factors affecting airflow were identified. Secondly, from a microscopic perspective, CFD simulations were employed to analyze the fundamental causes of pressure loss in the multi-branch pipeline system. Finally, from a macroscopic perspective, a dimensional analysis method was used to establish an empirical equation describing the relationship between the pressure loss (P) and several influencing factors, including the air density (ρ), air’s dynamic viscosity (μ), closed-end length of the header (Δl), branch pipe 1’s flow rate (Q), main pipe’s inner diameter (D), header’s inner diameter (γ), branch pipe’s inner diameter (d), and the spacing of the branch pipe (δ). The results of the bench tests indicate that when 0.0018 m3·s−1Q ≤ 0.0045 m3·s−1, 0.0272 m < d ≤ 0.036 m, 0.225 m < δ ≤ 0.26 m, 0.057 m ≤ γ ≤ 0.0814 m, and 0.0426 m ≤ D ≤ 0.0536 m, the prediction accuracy of the empirical equation can be controlled within 10%. Therefore, the equation provides a reference for the structural design and optimization of pneumatic seeders’ multi-branch pipelines. Full article

A multi-objective optimal trajectory planning method is proposed for manipulators in this paper to enhance motion efficiency and to reduce component wear while ensuring motion smoothness. The trajectory is initially interpolated in the joint space by using quintic non-uniform B-splines with virtual points, achieving the C4 continuity of joint motion and satisfying dynamic, kinematic, geometric, synchronization, and boundary constraints. The interpolation reformulates the trajectory planning problem into an optimization problem, where the time intervals between desired adjacent waypoints serve as variables. Travelling time and the integral of the squared jerk along the entire trajectories comprise the multi-objective functions. A constrained multi-objective dream optimization algorithm is designed to solve the time–jerk optimal trajectory planning problem and generate Pareto solutions for optimized trajectories. Simulations conducted on 6-DOF manipulators validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method in comparison with existing typical trajectory planning methods. Full article

In this paper, we develop a geometric formulation of datasets. The key novel idea is to formulate a dataset to be a fuzzy topological measure space as a global object and equip the space with an atlas of local charts using graphs of fuzzy linear logical functions. We call such a space a logifold. In applications, the charts are constructed by machine learning with neural network models. We implement the logifold formulation to find fuzzy domains of a dataset and to improve accuracy in data classification problems. Full article

In this study, theorems and proofs related to spherical and focal curves are presented in the BCV-Sasakian space. An approximate solution to the differential equation characterizing spherical curves in the BCV-Sasakian manifold M3 is obtained using the Taylor matrix collocation method. The general equations of canal and tubular surfaces are provided within this geometric framework. Additionally, the curvature properties of the tubular surface constructed around a non-vertex focal curve are computed and analyzed. All of these results are presented for the first time in the literature within the context of the BCV-Sasakian geometry. Thus, this study makes a substantial contribution to the differential geometry of contact metric manifolds by extending classical concepts into a more generalized and complex geometric structure. The Furuta pendulum is a well-known benchmark in the field of underactuated mechanical systems due to its reduced number of control inputs compared to its degrees of freedom, and richly nonlinear behavior. This work addresses the challenge of accurately modeling and controlling such a system without relying on traditional linearization techniques. In contrast to the common approach based on Lagrangian analytical modeling and state–space linearization, we propose a methodology that integrates a high-fidelity multibody model developed in Simscape Multibody (MATLAB), capturing the complete nonlinear dynamics of the system. The multibody model includes all geometric, inertial, and joint parameters of the physical hardware and interfaces directly with Simulink, enabling realistic simulation and control integration. To validate the physical fidelity of the multibody model, we perform a frequency-domain analysis of the pendulum’s natural free response. The dominant vibration frequency extracted from the simulation is compared with the theoretical prediction, demonstrating accurate capture of the system’s inertial and dynamic properties. This validation strategy strengthens the reliability of the model as a digital twin. The classical analytical formulation is provided to validate the simulation model and serve as a comparative framework. This dual modeling strategy allows for benchmarking control strategies against a trustworthy nonlinear digital twin of the Furuta pendulum. Preliminary experimental results using a physical prototype validate the feasibility of the proposed approach and set the foundation for future work in advanced nonlinear control design using the multibody representation as a digital validation tool. Three-dimensional (3D) radar imaging is essential for target detection and measurement of scattering characteristics. Cylindrical scanning, a prevalent spatial sampling technique, provides benefits in engineering applications and has been extensively utilized for assessing the radar stealth capabilities of large aircraft. Traditional cylindrical scanning generally utilizes highly sampled full-coverage techniques, leading to an excessive quantity of sampling points and diminished image efficiency, constraining its use for quick detection applications. This work presents an efficient 3D sampling strategy that integrates vertical linear scanning with horizontal rotating motion to overcome these restrictions. A joint angle–space sampling model is developed, and geometric constraints are implemented to enhance the scanning trajectory. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to conventional techniques, the proposed method achieves a 94% reduction in the scanning duration while maintaining a peak sidelobe level ratio (PSLR) of 12 dB. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that 3D imaging may be accomplished solely by a “V”-shaped trajectory, efficiently determining the minimal possible sampling aperture. This approach offers novel insights and theoretical backing for the advancement of high-efficiency, low-redundancy 3D radar imaging systems. Full article

Localization of mobile robots is crucial for deploying robots in real-world applications such as search and rescue missions. This work aims to develop an accurate localization system applicable to swarm robots equipped only with low-cost monocular vision sensors and visual markers. The system is designed to operate in fully open spaces, without landmarks or support from positioning infrastructures. To achieve this, we propose a localization method based on equilateral triangular formations. By leveraging the geometric properties of equilateral triangles, the accurate two-dimensional position of each participating robot is estimated using one-dimensional lateral distance information between robots, which can be reliably and accurately obtained with a low-cost monocular vision sensor. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate that, as travel time increases, the positioning error of the proposed method becomes significantly smaller than that of a conventional dead-reckoning system, another low-cost localization approach applicable to open environments. This study employs a force element analysis to investigate vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of three side-by-side circular cylinders at Reynolds number Re = 100, mass ratio m* = 10, spacing ratios S/D = 3–6, and reduced velocities Ur = 2–14. The lift and drag forces are decomposed into three physical components: volume vorticity force, surface vorticity force, and surface acceleration force. The present work systematically examines varying S/D and Ur effects on vibration amplitudes, frequencies, phase relationships, and transitions between distinct vortex-shedding patterns. By quantitative force decomposition, underlying physical mechanisms governing VIV in the triple-cylinder system are elucidated, including vortex dynamics, inter-cylinder interference, and flow structures. Results indicate that when S/D < 4, cylinders exhibit “multi-frequency” vibration responses. When S/D > 4, the “lock-in” region broadens, and the wake structure approaches the patterns of an isolated single cylinder; in addition, the trajectories of cylinders become more regularized. The forces acting on the central cylinder present characteristics of stochastic synchronization, significantly different from those observed in two-cylinder systems. The results can advance the understanding of complex interactions between hydrodynamic and structural dynamic forces under different geometric parameters that govern VIV response characteristics of marine structures. Nomadic heritage villages constitute significant material cultural heritage. Under China’s cultural revitalization and rural development strategies, these villages face spatial degradation driven by tourism and urbanization. Current research predominantly employs isolated analytical approaches—space syntax often overlooks social dynamics while social network analysis (SNA) overlooks physical interfaces—hindering the development of holistic solutions for socio-spatial resilience. This study proposes a multi-scale integrated assessment framework combining social network analysis (SNA) and space syntax to systematically evaluate public space structures in traditional nomadic villages of Xinjiang. The framework provides scientific evidence for optimizing public space design in these villages, facilitating harmonious coexistence between spatial functionality and cultural values. Focusing on three heritage villages—representing compact, linear, and dispersed morphologies—the research employs a hierarchical “village-street-node” analytical model to dissect spatial configurations and their socio-functional dynamics. Key findings include the following: Compact villages exhibit high central clustering but excessive concentration, necessitating strategies to enhance network resilience and peripheral connectivity. Linear villages demonstrate weak systemic linkages, requiring “segment-connection point supplementation” interventions to mitigate structural elongation. Dispersed villages maintain moderate network density but face challenges in visual integration and centrality, demanding targeted activation of key intersections to improve regional cohesion. By merging SNA’s social attributes with space syntax’s geometric precision, this framework bridges a methodological gap, offering comprehensive spatial optimization solutions. Practical recommendations include culturally embedded placemaking, adaptive reuse of transitional spaces, and thematic zoning to balance heritage conservation with tourism needs. Analyzing Xinjiang’s unique spatial–social interactions provides innovative insights for sustainable heritage village planning and replicable solutions for comparable global cases. Full article
