In an era where digitalization shapes economic and social landscapes, the intersection of digital skills, ethics, and integrity plays a crucial role in understanding the vulnerability of youth classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). This study explores how risky internet use and digital skill gaps contribute to socio-economic exclusion, integrating a multivariate and spatial approach to assess regional disparities in Europe. This study adopts a systems thinking perspective to explore digital exclusion as an emergent outcome of multiple interrelated subsystems. The research employs logistic regression, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Promax rotation, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to examine the impact of digital behaviors on NEET status. Using Eurostat data aggregated at the country level for the period (2000–2023) across 28 European countries, this study evaluates 24 digital indicators covering social media usage, instant messaging, daily internet access, data protection awareness, and digital literacy levels. The findings reveal that low digital skills significantly increase the likelihood of being NEET, while excessive social media and internet use show mixed effects depending on socio-economic context. A strong negative correlation between digital security practices and NEET status suggests that youths with a higher awareness of online risks are less prone to socio-economic exclusion. The GIS analysis highlights regional disparities, where countries with limited digital access and lower literacy levels exhibit higher NEET rates. Digital exclusion is not merely a technological issue but a multidimensional socio-economic challenge. To reduce the NEET rate, policies must focus on enhancing digital skills, fostering online security awareness, and addressing regional disparities. Integrating GIS methods allows for the identification of territorial clusters with heightened digital vulnerabilities, guiding targeted interventions for improving youth employability in the digital economy. Land urbanization enables a thorough perspective to explore the decoupling of land use environmental efficiency (LUEE) and energy use, thereby supporting the shift into low-carbon land use by emphasizing energy conservation and reducing carbon emissions. This paper first calculates LUEE from 2011 to 2021 by using the EBM-DEA model in China. The geographical detector model is used to examine the driving factors of land use environmental efficiency. The results show the following: (1) China’s LUEE is high in general but shows a clear pattern of spatial differentiation internally, with the highest values in the eastern region represented by Beijing, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, while the central and western regions show lower LUEE because of their irrational industrial structure and lagging green development. (2) Energy consumption, economic development, industrial upgrading, population size, and urban expansion are the driving factors. Their explanatory power for the spatial stratification heterogeneity of land use environmental impacts varies. (3) Urban expansion has the greatest impact on the spatial differentiation of land use environmental effects, while energy consumption also shows significant explanatory strength. In contrast, economic development and population size exhibit relatively weaker explanatory effects. (4) The interaction of the two driving factors has a greater impact on LUEE than their individual effects, and the interaction is a two-factor enhancement. Finally, we make targeted recommendations to help improve land use environmental efficiency. Full article

This paper presents a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) on data-driven approaches in flood forecasting from 2019 to 2024, a period marked by transformative developments in Deep Learning (DL) technologies. Analysing 363 selected studies, this paper provides an overview of the technological evolution in this field, methodological approaches, evaluation practices and geographical distribution of studies. The study revealed that meteorological and hydrological factors constitute approximately 76% of input variables, with rainfall/precipitation and water level measurements forming the core predictive basis. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks emerged as the dominant algorithm (21% of implementations), whilst hybrid and ensemble approaches showed the most dramatic growth (from 2% in 2019 to 10% in 2024). The study also revealed a threefold increase in publications during this period, with significant geographical concentration in East and Southeast Asia (56% of studies), particularly China (36%). Several research gaps were identified, including limited exploration of graph-based approaches for modelling spatial relationships, underutilisation of transfer learning for data-scarce regions, and insufficient uncertainty quantification. This SMS provides researchers and practitioners with actionable insights into current trends, methodological practices, and future directions in data-driven flood forecasting, thereby advancing this critical field for disaster management. The development of the Great Wall National Cultural Park has unleashed the potential for integrating cultural and tourism development along the Great Wall. However, ICH along the Great Wall, a key part of its cultural identity, suffers from low recognition and a mismatch between protection and development efforts. This study analyzes provincial-level and above ICH along Hebei’s Great Wall using geospatial tools and the Geographical Detector model to explore distribution patterns and influencing factors, while Geographically Weighted Regression is utilized to reveal spatial heterogeneity. It tests two hypotheses: (H1) ICH shows a clustered pattern; (H2) economic factors have a greater impact than cultural and natural factors. Key findings show: (1) ICH distribution is numerically balanced north–south but spatially uneven, with dense clusters in the south and scattered patterns in the north. (2) ICH and crafts cluster significantly, while dramatic balladry spreads evenly, and other categories are random. (3) Average annual temperature and precipitation have the greatest impact on ICH distribution, with the factors ranked as: natural > cultural > economic. Multidimensional interactions show significant enhancement effects. (4) Influencing factors vary spatially. Population density, transport, temperature, and traditional villages are positively related to ICH. Elevation, precipitation, tourism, and cultural institutions show mixed effects across regions. These insights support targeted ICH conservation and sustainable development in the Great Wall cultural corridor. Full article

The expanding distribution and geographic range of mosquitoes have potentially contributed to increased flaviviral dissemination and transmission. Despite the growing burden of flaviviral infections, there are no effective antiviral treatments or vaccines, highlighting the need for novel therapeutic targets. Tetraspanins, a superfamily of transmembrane domain glycoproteins involved in cellular organization, signaling, and protein–protein interactions have been recognized as potential mediators of flaviviral infection and transmission. While their roles in vertebrate hosts have been explored, their involvement in flaviviral replication and dissemination within medically important vectors remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the role of arthropod tetraspanins in mosquito cells and extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from cells infected with Zika virus (ZIKV) and dengue virus (serotype 2; DENV2). Among several of the tetraspanins analyzed, only CD151 was significantly upregulated in both mosquito cells and in EVs derived from ZIKV/DENV2-infected cells. RNAi-mediated silencing of CD151 led to a marked reduction in viral burden, suggesting its crucial role in flavivirus replication. Inhibition of EV biogenesis using GW4869 further demonstrated that EV-mediated viral transmission contributes to flavivirus propagation. Additionally, co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence analyses revealed direct interactions between CD151 and ZIKV NS2B and DENV2 capsid proteins. Overall, our findings highlight the functional importance of mosquito CD151 in the replication and transmission of ZIKV and DENV2. This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms of flaviviral infection in mosquitoes and suggests that targeting vector tetraspanins may offer a potential approach to controlling mosquito-borne flaviviruses. Geographical origin authentication of agrifood products is essential for ensuring their quality, preventing fraud, and maintaining consumers’ trust. In this study, we used proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy combined with chemometric methods for the geographical origin characterization of olive drupes and leaves from different Tuscany subregions, where olive oil production is relevant. Single-block approaches were implemented for individual datasets, using principal component analysis (PCA) for data visualization and Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) for sample classification. 1H NMR spectroscopy provided detailed metabolomic profiles, identifying key compounds such as polyphenols and organic acids that contribute to geographical differentiation. EEM fluorescence spectroscopy, in combination with Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC), revealed distinctive fluorescence signatures associated with polyphenolic content. A mid-level data fusion strategy, integrating the common dimensions (ComDim) method, was explored to improve the models’ performance. The results demonstrated that both spectroscopic techniques independently provided valuable insights in terms of geographical characterization, while data fusion further improved the model performances, particularly for olive drupes. Notably, this study represents the first attempt to apply EEM fluorescence for the geographical classification of olive drupes and leaves, highlighting its potential as a complementary tool in geographic origin authentication. The integration of advanced spectroscopic and chemometric methods offers a reliable approach for the differentiation of samples from closely related areas at a subregional level. Full article

Cold seep ecosystems harbor unique microbial communities with potential for producing secondary metabolites. However, the metabolic potential of cold seep microorganisms in the South China Sea remains under-recognized. This study employed both culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches, including 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and metagenomics, to investigate microbial communities and their potential for secondary metabolite production in the South China Sea cold seep. The results indicate microbial composition varied little between two non-reductive sediments but differed significantly from the reductive sediment, primarily due to Planctomycetes and Actinobacteria. Predicting the Secondary Metabolism Potential using Amplicon (PSMPA) predictions revealed 115 strains encoding more than 10 biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), with lower BGC abundance in reductive sediment. Culture-dependent studies showed Firmicutes as the dominant cultivable phylum, with strains from shallow samples encoding fewer BGCs. Metagenomic data confirmed distinct microbial compositions and BGC distributions across sediment types, with cold seep type having a stronger influence than geographic location. Certain BGCs showed strong correlations with sediment depth, reflecting microbial adaptation to nutrient-limited environments. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the metabolic capabilities of South China Sea cold seep microorganisms and reveals key factors influencing their secondary metabolic potential, offering valuable insights for the efficient exploration of cold seep biological resources. The diversity and distribution of medical and veterinary-relevant fungal diseases in Africa underscore the critical need for a multisectoral One Health strategy to enhance cost-effective preparedness and prevention. This review explores the geographic spread and epidemiology of key medical and veterinary fungi, including Emergomyces, Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Cryptococcus, Dermatophytes, Histoplasma, Sporothrix, Talaromyces, Paracoccidioides, Aspergillus, and Malassezia. Evidence indicates that many of these infections remain underdiagnosed and underreported, especially in vulnerable immunocompromised populations, due to limited surveillance, diagnostic capacity, and awareness. The increasing prevalence of these diseases, often in tandem with rising HIV rates and environmental changes, highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Implementing comprehensive, multisectoral interventions—focused on enhancing diagnostic capabilities, public awareness, surveillance, and cross-sector collaboration—is vital for effective prevention and control of these emerging fungal threats in Africa. This paper presents a comprehensive review of research on Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM), focusing on its role as a tool for managing knowledge and supporting conservation practices of Architectural Heritage. While previous review articles and most research works have predominantly addressed geometric modeling—given its significant challenges in the context of historic buildings—this study places greater emphasis on the integration of non-geometric data within the BIM environment. A systematic search was conducted in the Scopus database to extract the 451 relevant publications analyzed in this review, covering the period from 2008 to mid-2024. A bibliometric analysis was first performed to identify trends in publication types, geographic distribution, research focuses, and software usage. The main body of the review then explores three core themes in the development of the information system: the definition of model entities, both semantic and geometric; the data enrichment phase, incorporating historical, diagnostic, monitoring and conservation-related information; and finally, data use and sharing, including on-site applications and interoperability. For each topic, the review highlights and discusses the principal approaches documented in the literature, critically evaluating the advantages and limitations of different information management methods with respect to the distinctive features of the building under analysis and the specific objectives of the information model. This study explores the potential of Intelligent Geographic Information Systems (GISs) in advancing educational practices through the integration of real-time data models. The objective is to investigate how GIS technology can enhance teaching and learning by providing interactive and dynamic learning environments. The research employs a bibliometric analysis based on the Scopus database, covering the period from 2000 to 2024, to identify key trends, the evolution of GIS applications in education, and their pedagogical impact. Findings reveal that GISs, particularly when incorporating real-time data, enable a more immersive learning experience, facilitate data-driven decision-making, and promote student engagement through project-based learning. However, challenges such as the lack of specialized training for educators and limitations in technological infrastructure remain significant barriers to widespread adoption. The study concludes that Intelligent GISs have the potential to transform education by fostering personalized, interdisciplinary learning and enhancing educational management. It emphasizes the need for further research aimed at developing user-friendly systems and addressing ethical concerns to ensure the benefits of GIS technology are accessible to all students. Future studies should examine the long-term effects of GISs on student outcomes and explore their integration into diverse educational contexts. Full article

Spatial association analysis is essential for understanding interdependencies, spatial proximity, and distribution patterns within spatial data. The spatial scale is a key factor that significantly affects the result of spatial association mining. Traditional methods often rely on a fixed distance threshold (bandwidth) to define the scale effect, which can lead to scale sensitivity and discontinuity results. To address these limitations, this study introduces the Fuzzy Geographically Weighted Colocation Quotient (FGWCLQ) method. By integrating fuzzy theory, FGWCLQ replaces binary distance cutoffs with continuous membership functions, providing a more flexible and stable approach to spatial association mining. Using Point of Interest (POI) data from the Beijing urban area, FGWCLQ was applied to explore both intra- and inter-category spatial association patterns among star hotels, transportation facilities, and tourist attractions at different fuzzy neighborhoods. The results indicate that FGWCLQ can reliably discover global prevalent spatial associations among diverse facility types and visualize the spatial heterogeneity at various spatial scales. Compared to the deterministic GWCLQ method, FGWCLQ delivers more stable and robust results across varying spatial scales and generates more continuous association surfaces, which enable clear visualization of hierarchical clustering. Empirical findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the location of star hotels and supporting decision-making in urban planning. The method is available as an open-source Matlab package, providing a practical tool for diverse spatial association investigations. Full article

Background/Objectives: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic autoimmune conditions that impact the physical and psychological well-being of pediatric patients. While previous studies have shown a high prevalence of mental health challenges among youth with chronic conditions, the prevalence of mental health issues in Canadian pediatric patients with JIA and IBD remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of documented mental health disorders and related medication use of youth with JIA or IBD at a tertiary care centre. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of youths aged 12–17 diagnosed with JIA or IBD at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) to understand the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD), eating disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD), adolescent adjustment disorder, suicide attempt/suicide ideation, self-harm behaviour, substance use disorder, and attention deficit disorders (ADD). Results: We reviewed 429 patient charts, including 303 patients with IBD and 126 with JIA. Our findings identified 90 IBD patients and 20 JIA patients who had one or more documented mental health conditions. Proportionately, there was a higher prevalence of mental health conditions among IBD patients (30%) compared to JIA patients (16%). The most frequently observed conditions in both IBD and JIA patients were GAD (63%, 50%), ADD (33%, 35%), and MDD (29%, 15%). Conclusions: These findings highlight the critical need for early mental health screening and integrated care approaches that address both medical and psychosocial needs in adolescents with chronic illnesses. Future research should incorporate prospective study designs, include diverse geographic and demographic populations, and explore targeted interventions to improve mental and physical health outcomes in this vulnerable group. Skipjack tuna constitutes a crucial fishery resource in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) purse seine fishery, with high economic value and exploitation potential. It also serves as an essential subject for studying the interaction between fishery resource dynamics and marine ecosystems, as its resource abundance is significantly influenced by marine environmental factors. Skipjack tuna can be categorized into unassociated schools and associated schools, with the latter being predominant. Overfishing of the associated schools can adversely affect population health and the ecological environment. In-depth exploration of the spatial distribution responses of these two fish schools to environmental variables is significant for the rational development and utilization of tuna resources and for enhancing the sustainability of fishery resources. In sparsely sampled and complex marine environments, geographic similarity methods effectively predict tuna resources by quantifying local fishing ground environmental similarities. This study introduces geographical similarity theory. This study focused on 1° × 1° fishery data (2004–2021) released by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) combined with relevant marine environmental data. We employed Geographical Convergent Cross Mapping (GCCM) to explore significant environmental factors influencing catch and variations in causal intensity and employed a Geographically Optimal Similarity (GOS) model to predict the spatial distribution of catch for the two types of tuna schools. The research findings indicate that the following: (1) Sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), and net primary productivity (NPP) are key factors in GCCM model analysis, significantly influencing the catch of two fish schools. (2) The GOS model exhibits higher prediction accuracy and stability compared to the Generalized Additive Model (GAM) and the Basic Configuration Similarity (BCS) model. R2 values reaching 0.656 and 0.649 for the two types of schools, respectively, suggest that the geographical similarity method has certain applicability and application potential in the spatial prediction of fishery resources. (3) Uncertainty analysis revealed more stable predictions for unassociated schools, with 72.65% of the results falling within the low-uncertainty range (0.00–0.25), compared to 52.65% for associated schools. This study, based on geographical similarity theory, elucidates differential spatial responses of distinct schools to environmental factors and provides a novel approach for fishing ground prediction. It also provides a scientific basis for the dynamic assessment and rational exploitation and utilization of skipjack tuna resources in the Pacific Ocean. Full article

This study explores digital inequality as a socio-spatial phenomenon within the context of smart inclusion, focusing on the Regional Unit of Xanthi, Greece—a region marked by ethno-cultural diversity and pronounced urban–rural contrasts. Using a mixed-methods design, this research integrates secondary quantitative data with qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews, aiming to uncover how spatial, demographic, and cultural variables shape digital engagement. Geographic Information System (GIS) tools are employed to map disparities in internet access and ICT infrastructure, revealing significant gaps linked to geography, education, and economic status. The findings demonstrate that digital inequality is particularly acute in rural, minority, and economically marginalized communities, where limited infrastructure intersects with low digital literacy and socio-economic disadvantage. Interview data further illuminate how residents navigate exclusion, emphasizing generational divides, perceptions of technology, and place-based constraints. By bridging spatial analysis with lived experience, this study advances the conceptualization of digitally inclusive smart regions. It offers policy-relevant insights into how territorial inequality undermines the goals of smart development and proposes context-sensitive interventions to promote equitable digital participation. The case of Xanthi underscores the importance of integrating spatial justice into smart city and regional planning agendas. Full article

Regional Patterns in Weed Composition of Maize Fields in Eastern Hungary: The Balance of Environmental and Agricultural Factors

The primary aim of this study was to explore the influence of abiotic factors on weed development in maize fields, with the goal of informing more effective weed management practices. We focused on identifying key environmental, edaphic, and agricultural variables that contribute to weed infestations, particularly before the application of spring herbicide treatments. Field investigations were conducted from 2018 to 2021 across selected maize-growing regions in Hungary. Over the four-year period, a total of 51 weed species were recorded, with Echinochloa crus-galli, Chenopodium album, Portulaca oleracea, and Hibiscus trionum emerging as the most prevalent taxa. Collectively, these four species accounted for more than half (52%) of the total weed cover. Altogether, the 20 most dominant species contributed 95% of the overall weed coverage. The analysis revealed that weed cover, species richness, and weed diversity were significantly affected by soil properties, nutrient levels, geographic location, and tillage systems. The results confirm that the composition of weed species was influenced by several environmental and management-related factors, including soil parameters, geographical location, annual precipitation, tillage method, and fertilizer application. Environmental factors collectively explained a slightly higher proportion of the variance (13.37%) than farming factors (12.66%) at a 90% significance level. Seasonal dynamics and crop rotation history also played a notable role in species distribution. Nutrient inputs, particularly nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, influenced both species diversity and floristic composition. Deep tillage practices favored the proliferation of perennial species, whereas shallow cultivation tended to promote annual weeds. Overall, the composition of weed vegetation proved to be a valuable indicator of site-specific soil conditions and agricultural practices. These findings underscore the need to tailor weed management strategies to local environmental and soil contexts for sustainable crop production. Full article
