Maintaining the required relative humidity values in the vehicle cabin is an important HVAC task, along with considerations related to the temperature, velocity, air pressure and noise. Deviation from the optimal values worsens the psycho-physiological state of the driver and affects the energy efficiency of the train. In this study, a model of liquid film formation on and removal from various cabin surfaces was constructed using the fundamental Navier–Stokes hydrodynamic equations. A special transport model based on the liquid vapor diffusion equation was used to simulate the air environment inside the cabin. The evaporation and condensation of surface films were simulated using the Euler film model, which directly considers liquid–gas and gas–liquid transitions. Numerical results were obtained using the RANS equations and a turbulence model by means of the finite volume method in Ansys CFD. Conjugate fields of temperature, velocity and moisture concentration were constructed for various time intervals, and the dependence values for the film thicknesses on various surfaces relative to time were determined. The verification was conducted in comparison with the experimental data, based on the protocol for measuring the microclimate indicators in workplaces, as applied to the train cabin: the average ranges encompassed temperature changes from 11% to 18%, and relative humidity ranges from 16% to 26%. Comparison with the results of other studies, without considering the phase transition and condensation, shows that, for the warm mode, the average air temperature in the cabin with condensation is 12.5% lower than without condensation, which is related to the process of liquid evaporation from the heated walls. The difference in temperature values for the model with and without condensation ranged from −12.5% to +4.9%. We demonstrate that, with an effective mode of removing condensate film from the window surface, including recirculation modes, the energy consumption of the climate control system improves significantly, but this requires a more accurate consideration of thermodynamic parameters and relative humidity. Thus, considering the moisture condensation model reveals that this variable can significantly affect other parameters of the microclimate in cabins: in particular, the temperature. This means that it should be considered in the numerical modeling, along with the basic heat transfer equations. Full article

This study examines the performance of two diffuser configurations—a trumpet-shaped and a semi-diagonal design—for application in micro gas turbine engines, aiming to assess their suitability in terms of efficiency and operational flexibility. Both diffusers were initially evaluated using steady-state CFD simulations with the k-omega SST turbulence model, followed by experimental testing on an actual engine across the start-up sequence from idle to 70% of nominal speed. Performance was mapped over four constant-speed lines for each configuration. Results showed that the trumpet-shaped diffuser offered a greater choke margin but suffered from increased aerodynamic losses, whereas the semi-diagonal diffuser demonstrated higher efficiency but required closer alignment with the target operating point. The k-omega SST model showed strong predictive accuracy, with 5.13% agreement across all instrumented parameters for all investigated speed lines. These findings suggest that while the trumpet diffuser provides better stability, the semi-diagonal design is more efficient when properly targeted. Future work will focus on extending the analysis to higher speed ranges and transient regimes using harmonic balance CFD methods and enhanced data acquisition techniques. Full article

Atmospheric climate science lacks the capacity to integrate thermodynamics with the gravitational potential of air in a classical quantum theory. To what extent can we identify Carnot’s ideal heat engine cycle in reversible isothermal and isentropic phases between dual temperatures partitioning heat flow with coupled work processes in the atmosphere? Using statistical action mechanics to describe Carnot’s cycle, the maximum rate of work possible can be integrated for the working gases as equal to variations in the absolute Gibbs energy, estimated as sustaining field quanta consistent with Carnot’s definition of heat as caloric. His treatise of 1824 even gave equations expressing work potential as a function of differences in temperature and the logarithm of the change in density and volume. Second, Carnot’s mechanical principle of cooling caused by gas dilation or warming by compression can be applied to tropospheric heat–work cycles in anticyclones and cyclones. Third, the virial theorem of Lagrange and Clausius based on least action predicts a more accurate temperature gradient with altitude near 6.5–6.9 °C per km, requiring that the Gibbs rotational quantum energies of gas molecules exchange reversibly with gravitational potential. This predicts a diminished role for the radiative transfer of energy from the atmosphere to the surface, in contrast to the Trenberth global radiative budget of ≈330 watts per square metre as downwelling radiation. The spectral absorptivity of greenhouse gas for surface radiation into the troposphere enables thermal recycling, sustaining air masses in Lagrangian action. This obviates the current paradigm of cooling with altitude by adiabatic expansion. The virial-action theorem must also control non-reversible heat–work Carnot cycles, with turbulent friction raising the surface temperature. Dissipative surface warming raises the surface pressure by heating, sustaining the weight of the atmosphere to varying altitudes according to latitude and seasonal angles of insolation. New predictions for experimental testing are now emerging from this virial-action hypothesis for climate, linking vortical energy potential with convective and turbulent exchanges of work and heat, proposed as the efficient cause setting the thermal temperature of surface materials. Driven by stringent emission regulations, advanced combustion modes utilizing turbulent jet ignition technology are pivotal for enhancing the performance of marine low-speed natural gas dual-fuel engines. This review focuses on three novel combustion modes, yielding key conclusions: (1) Compared to the conventional DJCDC mode, the TJCDC mode exhibits a significantly higher swirl ratio and turbulence kinetic energy in the main chamber during initial combustion. This promotes natural gas jet development and combustion acceleration, leading to shorter ignition delay, reduced combustion duration, and a combustion center (CA50) positioned closer to the Top Dead Center (TDC), alongside higher peak cylinder pressure and a faster early heat release rate. Energetically, while TJCDC incurs higher heat transfer losses, it benefits from lower exhaust energy and irreversible exergy loss, indicating greater potential for useful work extraction, albeit with slightly higher indicated specific NOx emissions. (2) In the high-compression ratio TJCPC mode, the Liquid Pressurized Natural Gas (LPNG) injection parameters critically impact performance. Delaying the start of injection (SOI) or extending the injection duration degrades premixing uniformity and increases unburned methane (CH4) slip, with the duration effects showing a load dependency. Optimizing both the injection timing and duration is, therefore, essential for emission control. (3) Increasing the excess air ratio delays the combustion phasing in TJCPC (longer ignition delay, extended combustion duration, and retarded CA50). However, this shift positions the heat release more optimally relative to the TDC, resulting in significantly improved indicated thermal efficiency. This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing high-efficiency, low-emission combustion strategies in marine dual-fuel engines. Full article

Electricity markets in Europe have undergone major changes in the last decade, mainly due to the increasing share of variable renewable energy sources (RES), changing demand patterns, and geopolitical factors—particularly the war in Ukraine, tensions over energy imports, and disruptions in natural gas supplies. These changes have led to increased electricity price volatility, reducing the reliability of traditional forecasting tools. This research analyses the potential of static and adaptive linear regression as electricity price forecasting tools in the context of three countries with different energy mixes: Germany, France and the Czech Republic. The static regression approach was compared with an adaptive approach based on incremental model updates at monthly intervals. Testing was carried out in three different scenarios combining stable and turbulent market periods. The quantitative results showed that the adaptive model achieved a lower MAE and RMSE, especially when trained on data from high-volatility periods. However, models trained under turbulent conditions performed poorly in stable environments due to a shift in market dynamics. The results supported several of the hypotheses formulated and demonstrated the need for localised, flexible and continuously updated forecasting. Limitations of the adaptive approach and suggestions for future research, including changing the length of training windows and the use of seasonal models, are also discussed. The research confirms that modern markets require adaptive analytical approaches that account for changing RES dynamics and country specificities. Full article

With growing reliance on hydraulic fracturing to develop tight oil and gas reservoirs characterized by low porosity and permeability, optimizing proppant transport and placement has become critical to sustaining fracture conductivity and production. However, how fracture geometry influences proppant distribution under varying field conditions remains insufficiently understood. This study employed computational fluid dynamics to investigate proppant transport and placement in hydraulic fractures of which the aperture tapers linearly along their length. Four taper rate models (δ = 0, 1/1500, 1/750, and 1/500) were analyzed under a range of operational parameters: injection velocities (1.38–3.24 m/s), sand concentrations (2–8%), proppant particle sizes (0.21–0.85 mm), and proppant densities (1760–3200 kg/m3). Equilibrium proppant pack height was adopted as the key metric for pack morphology. The results show that increasing injection rate and taper rate both serve to lower pack heights and enhance downstream transport, while a higher sand concentration, larger particle size, and greater density tend to raise pack heights and promote more stable pack geometries. In tapering fractures, higher δ values amplify flow acceleration and turbulence, yielding flatter, “table-top” proppant distributions and extended placement lengths. Fine, low-density proppants more readily penetrate to the fracture tip, whereas coarse or dense particles form taller inlet packs but can still be carried farther under high taper conditions. These findings offer quantitative guidance for optimizing fracture geometry, injection parameters, and proppant design to improve conductivity and reduce sand-plugging risk in tight formations. These insights address the challenge of achieving effective proppant placement in complex fractures and provide quantitative guidance for tailoring fracture geometry, injection parameters, and proppant properties to improve conductivity and mitigate sand plugging risks in tight formations. Efficient water heating is essential for wool-washing processes, which demand temperatures above 70 °C. To meet this requirement sustainably, a parabolic trough solar concentrator system is proposed in this paper as an alternative to conventional natural gas systems. The design centers on a water pool constructed from bricks reinforced with an internal steel layer, enhancing heat exchange efficiency. Also, various synthetic oils were analyzed as heat transfer fluids (HTFs) within an immersed heat exchanger, such as Thermia B oil, Heat Transfer Oil 32, biphasic oil, and Therminol vp1 oil. Numerical simulations were performed using ANSYS CFX v19.2 software with the k-ε turbulence model to evaluate the thermal performance and temperature distribution. The results demonstrate the superior efficiency of the solar-powered system, with the steel-reinforced pool achieving optimal water temperatures between 78 °C and 85 °C, exceeding the required threshold for industrial wool washing. Among the various synthetic oils analyzed, Thermia B emerged as the most effective heat transfer fluid, maintaining water temperatures in the range of 75 °C to 85 °C. This superior thermal performance is attributed to its high thermal conductivity and reduced heat loss, ensuring consistent and optimal heat distribution for the wool-washing process. Full article

As an emerging energy-saving approach, bio-inspired drag reduction technology has become a key research direction for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This study introduces the latest research progress on bio-inspired microstructured surfaces in the field of underwater drag reduction, focusing on analyzing the drag reduction mechanism, preparation process, and application effect of the three major technological paths; namely, bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces, bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces, and bio-inspired modified coatings. Bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces can significantly reduce the wall shear stress by regulating the flow characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer through microstructure design. Bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces form stable gas–liquid interfaces through the construction of micro-nanostructures and reduce frictional resistance by utilizing the slip boundary effect. Bio-inspired modified coatings, on the other hand, realize the synergistic function of drag reduction and antifouling through targeted chemical modification of materials and design of micro-nanostructures. Although these technologies have made significant progress in drag reduction performance, their engineering applications still face bottlenecks such as manufacturing process complexity, gas layer stability, and durability. Future research should focus on the analysis of drag reduction mechanisms and optimization of material properties under multi-physical field coupling conditions, the development of efficient and low-cost manufacturing processes, and the enhancement of surface stability and adaptability through dynamic self-healing coatings and smart response materials. It is hoped that the latest research status of bio-inspired drag reduction technology reviewed in this study provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for the sustainable development and energy-saving design of ships and underwater vehicles. To address the difficulty of locating small-hole leaks in buried natural gas pipelines, this study conducted a comprehensive theoretical and numerical analysis of the acoustic characteristics associated with such leakage events. A coupled flow–acoustic simulation framework was developed, integrating gas compressibility via the realizable k-ε and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence models, the Peng–Robinson equation of state, a broadband noise source model, and the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy. The effects of pipeline operating pressure (2–10 MPa), leakage hole diameter (1–6 mm), soil type (sandy, loam, and clay), and leakage orientation on the flow field, acoustic source behavior, and sound field distribution were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the leakage hole size and soil medium exert significant influence on both flow dynamics and acoustic propagation, while the pipeline pressure mainly affects the strength of the acoustic source. The leakage direction was found to have only a minor impact on the overall results. The leakage noise is primarily composed of dipole sources arising from gas–solid interactions and quadrupole sources generated by turbulent flow, with the frequency spectrum concentrated in the low-frequency range of 0–500 Hz. This research elucidates the acoustic characteristics of pipeline leakage under various conditions and provides a theoretical foundation for optimal sensor deployment and accurate localization in buried pipeline leak detection systems. The spray evaporation process in the boiler desuperheater involves complex droplet behaviors and fluid–thermal coupling, and its temperature distribution characteristics greatly affect the performance and safety of industrial processes. To better understand the process characteristics and develop the optimal desuperheater design, computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) was applied to numerically investigate the flow and thermal characteristics. The Eulerian–Lagrangian approach was used to describe the two-phase flow characteristics. Both primary and secondary droplet breakup, the coupling effect of gas–liquid and stochastic collision and coalescence of droplets were considered in the model. The plain-orifice atomizer model was applied to simulate the atomization process. The numerical model was validated with the plant data. The spray tube structure was found to greatly affect the flow pattern, resulting in the uneven velocity distribution, significant temperature difference, and local reverse flow downstream of the orifices. The velocity and temperature distributions tend to be more uniform due to the complete evaporation and turbulent mixing. Smaller orifices are beneficial for generating smaller-sized droplets, thereby promoting the mass and heat transfer between the steam and droplets. Under the same operating conditions, the desuperheating range of cases with 21, 15, and 9 orifices is 33.7 K, 32.0 K, and 29.8 K, respectively, indicating that the desuperheater with more orifices (i.e., with smaller orifices) shows better desuperheating ability. Additionally, a venturi-type desuperheater was numerically studied and compared with the straight liner case. By contrast, discernible differences in velocity and temperature distribution characteristics can be observed in the venturi case. The desuperheating range of the venturi and straight liner cases is 38.1 K and 35.4 K, respectively. The velocity acceleration through the venturi throat facilitates the droplet breakup and improves mixing, thereby achieving better desuperheating ability and temperature uniformity. Based on the investigation of the spray evaporation process, the complex droplet behaviors and fluid–thermal coupling characteristics in an industrial boiler desuperheater under high temperature and high pressure can be better understood, and effective guidance for the process and design optimizations can be provided. Mine ventilation systems are critical for ensuring operational safety, yet air leakage remains a pervasive challenge, leading to energy inefficiency and heightened safety risks. Traditional tracer gas methods, while effective in simple networks, exhibit significant errors in complex multi-entry systems due to static empirical parameters and environmental interference. This study proposes an integrated methodology that combines multi-path airflow analysis with dynamic longitudinal dispersion coefficient correction to enhance the accuracy of air leakage detection. Utilizing sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as the tracer gas, a phased release protocol with temporal isolation was implemented across five strategic points in a coal mine ventilation network. High-precision detectors (Bruel & Kiaer 1302) and the MIVENA system enabled synchronized data acquisition and 3D network modeling. Theoretical models were dynamically calibrated using field-measured airflow velocities and dispersion coefficients. The results revealed three deviation patterns between simulated and measured tracer peaks: Class A deviation showed 98.5% alignment in single-path scenarios, Class B deviation highlighted localized velocity anomalies from Venturi effects, and Class C deviation identified recirculation vortices due to abrupt cross-sectional changes. Simulation accuracy improved from 70% to over 95% after introducing wind speed and dispersion adjustment coefficients, resolving concealed leakage pathways between critical nodes and key nodes. The study demonstrates that the dynamic correction of dispersion coefficients and multi-path decomposition effectively mitigates errors caused by turbulence and geometric irregularities. This approach provides a robust framework for optimizing ventilation systems, reducing invalid airflow losses, and advancing intelligent ventilation management through real-time monitoring integration. The Generation of Wind Velocity via Scale Invariant Gibbs Free Energy: Turbulence Drives the General Circulation

The mechanism for the upscale deposition of energy into the atmosphere from molecules and photons up to organized wind systems is examined. This analysis rests on the statistical multifractal analysis of airborne observations. The results show that the persistence of molecular velocity after collision in breaking the continuous translational symmetry of an equilibrated gas is causative. The symmetry breaking may be caused by excited photofragments with the associated persistence of molecular velocity after collision, interaction with condensed phase surfaces (solid or liquid), or, in a scaling environment, an adjacent scale having a different velocity and temperature. The relationship of these factors for the solution to the Navier–Stokes equation in an atmospheric context is considered. The scale invariant version of Gibbs free energy, carried by the most energetic molecules, enables the acceleration of organized flow (winds) from the smallest planetary scales by virtue of the nonlinearity of the mechanism, subject to dissipation by the more numerous average molecules maintaining an operational temperature via infrared radiation to the cold sink of space. The fastest moving molecules also affect the transfer of infrared radiation because their higher kinetic energy and the associated more-energetic collisions contribute more to the far wings of the spectral lines, where the collisional displacement from the central energy level gap is greatest and the lines are less self-absorbed. The relationship of events at these scales to macroscopic variables such as the thermal wind equation and its components will be considered in the Discussion section. An attempt is made to synthesize the mechanisms by which winds are generated and sustained, on all scales, by appealing to published works since 2003. This synthesis produces a view of the general circulation that includes thermodynamics and the defining role of turbulence in driving it. Full article

In high-pressure thermal power systems, corrosion-induced wall thinning in steam pipelines poses a significant threat to operational safety and efficiency. This study investigates the effects of gas–liquid two-phase flow on corrosion-induced wall thinning in pipe bends of high-pressure heaters in power plants, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms of void fraction and inner wall surface roughness. Research reveals that an increased void fraction significantly enhances flow turbulence and centrifugal effects, resulting in elevated pressure and Discrete Phase Model (DPM) concentration at the bend, thereby intensifying erosion phenomena. Simultaneously, the turbulence generated by bubble collapse at the bend promotes the accumulation and detachment of corrosion products, maintaining a cyclic process of erosion and corrosion that accelerates wall thinning. Furthermore, the increased surface roughness of the inner bend wall exacerbates the corrosion process. The rough surface alters local flow characteristics, leading to changes in pressure distribution and DPM concentration accumulation points, subsequently accelerating corrosion progression. Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses reveal changes in the chemical composition and microstructural characteristics of corrosion products. The results indicate that the porous structure of oxide films fails to effectively protect against corrosive media, while bubble impact forces damage the oxide films, exposing fresh metal surfaces and further accelerating the corrosion process. Comprehensive analysis demonstrates that the interaction between void fraction and surface roughness significantly intensifies wall thinning, particularly under conditions of high void fraction and high roughness, where pressure and DPM concentration at the bend may reach extreme values, further increasing corrosion risk. Therefore, optimization of void fraction and surface roughness, along with the application of corrosion-resistant materials and surface treatment technologies, should be considered in pipeline design and operation to mitigate corrosion risks. Influence of Thermal Inertia on Dynamic Characteristics of Gas Turbine Impeller Components

Gas turbines in land-based microgrids and shipboard-isolated power grids frequently face operational challenges, such as the startup and shutdown of high-power equipment and sudden load fluctuations, which significantly impact their performance. To examine the dynamic behavior of gas turbines under transitional operating conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulation is employed to create a model of the gas turbine rotor, incorporating thermal inertia, which is then analyzed in conjunction with three-dimensional finite element methods. The governing equations of the flow field are discretized, providing results for the flow and temperature fields throughout the entire flow path. A hybrid approach, combining temperature differences and heat flux density, is applied to set the thermal boundary conditions for the walls, with the turbine’s operational state determined based on the direction of heat transfer. Additionally, mesh division techniques and turbulence models are selected based on the geometric dimensions and operating conditions of the compressor and turbine. The simulation results reveal that thermal inertia induces a shift in the dynamic characteristics of the rotor components. Under the same heat transfer conditions, variations in rotational speed have a minimal impact on the shift in the characteristic curve. The working fluid temperature inside the compressor components is lower, with a smaller temperature difference from the wall, resulting in less intense heat transfer compared to the turbine components. Overall, heat transfer accounts for only about 0.1% of the total enthalpy at the inlet. When heat exchange occurs between the working fluid and the walls, around 6–15% of the exchanged heat is converted into changes in technical work, with this percentage increasing as the temperature difference rises. A significant portion of energy losses in industrial systems arises from the inefficient use of high-temperature exhaust gases, emphasizing the need for enhanced heat recovery strategies. This study aims to improve energy efficiency by examining the effects of radiation-intensifying inserts on combined radiative and convective heat transfer in flue-gas heated channels. A systematic literature review revealed a research gap in understanding the interaction between these mechanisms in flue-gas heat exchangers. To address this, analytical calculations were conducted for two geometries: a radiation-intensifying plate between parallel plates and the same insert in a circular pipe. The analysis covered a range of gas-flue and wall temperatures (560–1460 K and 303–393 K, respectively), flow velocities, and spectral emissivity values. Key performance metrics included Reynolds and Nusselt numbers to assess flow resistance and heat transfer. Results indicated that flue-gas temperature has the most significant effect on total rate of heat transfer, and the insert significantly enhanced radiative heat transfer by over 60%, increasing flow resistance. A local Nusselt number minimum at a length-to-diameter ratio of approximately 26 suggested transitional flow behavior. These results provide valuable insights for the design of high-temperature heat exchangers, with future work planned to validate the findings experimentally. Full article
