The increasing depletion of fossil fuels and their environmental impact have led to the development of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. By combining fuel cells with batteries, these vehicles offer greater efficiency and zero emissions. However, their energy management remains a challenge requiring advanced strategies. This paper presents a comparative study of two developed energy management strategies: a deterministic rule-based approach and a fuzzy logic approach. The proposed system consists of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the primary energy source and a lithium-ion battery as the secondary source. A comprehensive model of the hybrid powertrain is developed to evaluate energy distribution and system behaviour. The control system includes a model predictive control (MPC) method for fuel cell current regulation and a PI controller to maintain DC bus voltage stability. The proposed strategies are evaluated under standard driving cycles (UDDS and NEDC) using a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. Key performance indicators such as fuel efficiency, hydrogen consumption, battery state-of-charge, and voltage stability are examined to assess the effectiveness of each approach. Simulation results demonstrate that the deterministic strategy offers a structured and computationally efficient solution, while the fuzzy logic approach provides greater adaptability to dynamic driving conditions, leading to improved overall energy efficiency. These findings highlight the critical role of advanced control strategies in improving FCHEV performance and offer valuable insights for future developments in hybrid-vehicle energy management. Due to climate change, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly growing and drawing researchers interest. Driving conditions like mountainous roads, slick surfaces, and rough terrains illuminate the vehicles inherent nonlinearities. Under such scenarios, the behavior of power sources (fuel cell, battery, and super-capacitor), power processing units (converters), and power consuming units (traction motors) deviates from nominal operation. The increasing demand for FCHEVs necessitates control systems capable of handling nonlinear dynamics, while ensuring robust, precise energy distribution among fuel cells, batteries, and super-capacitors. This paper presents a DSMC strategy enhanced with Robust Uniform Exact Differentiators for FCHEV energy management. To optimally tune DSMC parameters, reduce chattering, and address the limitations of conventional methods, a hybrid metaheuristic framework is proposed. This framework integrates moth flame optimization (MFO) with the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) and Fractal Heritage Evolution, implemented through three spiral-based variants: MFOGSAPSO-A (Archimedean), MFOGSAPSO-H (Hyperbolic), and MFOGSAPSO-L (Logarithmic). Control laws are optimized using the Integral of Time-weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) criterion. Among the variants, MFOGSAPSO-L shows the best overall performance with the lowest ITAE for the fuel cell (56.38), battery (57.48), super-capacitor (62.83), and DC bus voltage (4741.60). MFOGSAPSO-A offers the most accurate transient response with minimum RMSE and MAE FC (0.005712, 0.000602), battery (0.004879, 0.000488), SC (0.002145, 0.000623), DC voltage (0.232815, 0.058991), and speed (0.030990, 0.010998)—outperforming MFOGSAPSO, GSA, and PSO. MFOGSAPSO-L further reduces the ITAE for fuel cell tracking by up to 29% over GSA and improves control smoothness. PSO performs moderately but lags under transient conditions. Simulation results conducted under EUDC validate the effectiveness of the MFOGSAPSO-based DSMC framework, confirming its superior tracking, faster convergence, and stable voltage control under transients making it a robust and high-performance solution for FCHEV. This study evaluates four hybrid infrastructure scenarios for supporting battery electric buses (BEBs) and fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs), analyzing different combinations of grid power, solar energy, battery storage, and fuel cell systems. A multi-stage framework—comprising energy demand forecasting, infrastructure capacity planning, and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) evaluation incorporating total cost of ownership (TCO), carbon emissions, and energy resilience—was developed and applied to a real-world transit depot. The results highlight critical trade-offs between financial, environmental, and operational objectives. The limited rooftop solar configuration, integrating solar energy through a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA), emerges as the most cost-effective near-term solution. Offsite solar with onsite large-scale battery storage and offsite solar with fuel cell integration achieve greater sustainability and resilience, but they face substantial cost barriers. The analysis underscores the importance of balancing investment, emissions reduction, and resilience in planning zero-emission bus fleets. Full article

When power system equipment fails due to disasters, resulting in the isolation of parts of the network, the loads within the isolated system cannot be guaranteed a continuous power supply. However, for critical loads—such as hospitals or data centers—continuous power supply is of utmost importance. While distributed energy resources (DERs) within the network can supply power to some loads, outages may lead to compensation and fairness issues regarding the unsupplied loads. In response, this study proposes a methodology to determine the appropriate power contract price for key customers by estimating the unsupplied power demand for critical loads in isolated networks and incorporating both outage compensation costs and voltage stability penalties. The microgrid under consideration comprises DERs—including electric vehicles (EVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), photovoltaic (PV) plants, and wind turbine (WT) plants—as well as controllable resources such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hydrogen energy storage systems (HESS). It serves both residential load clusters and critical loads associated with social infrastructure. The proposed methodology is structured in two stages. In normal operating conditions, optimal scheduling is simulated using second-order conic programming (SOCP). In the event of a fault, mixed-integer SOCP (MISOCP) is employed to determine the optimal load shedding strategy. A case study is conducted using the IEEE 123 bus test node system to simulate the outage compensation cost calculation and voltage penalty assessment processes. Based on this analysis, a contract price for key customers that considers both disaster-induced outages and voltage impacts is presented. Full article

We propose a coordinated control strategy for off-grid 10 kV wind–solar–hydrogen energy storage DC microgrid systems based on hybrid energy storage and controllable loads to improve their stability and accommodation level. First, mathematical models of each unit are established based on the operating characteristics of wind turbines, photovoltaic (PV) units, alkaline electrolyzers, fuel cells, and lithium batteries. Second, on the side of the electro-hydrogen hybrid energy storage DC/DC converter, the traditional dual-loop control is improved by proposing a control scheme combining an extended state observer with adaptive backstepping control (ESO-adaptive backstepping). On the load demand side, an electric spring incorporating adaptive fuzzy control (AFC) is introduced to adjust and compensate for the voltage. Finally, an actual case analysis is conducted using data from the Ningbo Cixi hydrogen–electric coupling DC microgrid demonstration project. The results demonstrate that the control method proposed in this study significantly outperforms the traditional double closed-loop control method. Specifically, the proposed method reduces the bus voltage fluctuation range in the presence of load disturbances by 24.07% and decreases the stabilization time by 56.92%. Additionally, the efficiency of the hydrogen fuel cell is enhanced by 31.88%. This control method can be applied to 10 kV DC microgrid systems with distributed energy resources. It aims to reduce the fluctuation amplitude of the DC bus voltage and enhance the system’s ability to withstand transient impact events. Full article

With the increasing adoption of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, it is essential to achieve carbon neutrality. However, several shortcomings, including their intermittence, pose significant challenges to the stability of the electrical grid. This study explores hydrogen-based technologies, such as fuel cells and water electrolysis systems, as an effective solution to improve frequency stability and address the problems of power grid reliability. Using power system analysis programs, modeling and simulations performed on IEEE-25 Bus and Jeju Island systems demonstrate the potential of these technologies to mitigate reductions, reduce transmission constraints, and stabilize frequencies. The results show that hydrogen-based systems are important factors enabling sustainable energy transition. Full article

In addition to the widely recognized benefits of reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment, the authors believe that bus electrification has potential advantages in enhancing driving safety, improving passenger comfort, and reducing driver fatigue—areas that have not yet been sufficiently studied and emphasized. Safety and comfort are fundamental objectives in the continuous development of transportation systems. They are directly and closely related to both passengers and drivers and are among the top priorities when individuals choose their mode of transportation. Therefore, these aspects deserve broader and more in-depth attention and research. This study aims to identify the potential advantages of route bus electrification in terms of safety and comfort. The results of a passive experiment on the speed profile of buses operating on actual routes are presented here. Firstly, we focus on the acceleration/deceleration at the starting/stopping stops, specifically for regular-route buses, and obtain the following information: I. Starting acceleration from a bus stop is particularly strong in the second half of the acceleration process, being suitable for motor-driven vehicles. II. The features of the stopping deceleration at a bus stop are “high intensity” and “low dispersion”, with the latter enabling the refinement of regenerative settings and significantly lowering electricity economy during electrification. And we compare the speed profile of an electric bus with those of a diesel bus and obtain the following information: III. Motor-driven vehicles offer the advantages of “high acceleration performance” and “no gear shifting”, making them particularly suitable for the high-intensity acceleration required when route buses depart from stations. This not only simplifies driving operations but also enhances lane-changing safety. And by calculating and analyzing the jerk amount, we could quantitatively demonstrate the comfortable driving experience while riding on this type of bus where there is no shock due to gear shifting. IV. While the “high acceleration performance” of motor-driven vehicles produces “individual differences in the speed change patterns”, this does not translate to “individual differences in electricity consumption”, owing to the characteristics of this type of vehicle. With engine-driven vehicles, measures such as “slow acceleration” and “shift up early” are strongly encouraged to realize eco-driving, and any driving style that deviates from these measures is avoided. However, with motor-driven vehicles, the driver does not need to be too concerned about the speed change patterns during acceleration. This characteristic also suggests a benefit in terms of the electrification of buses. Full article

In order to smooth the fluctuation of photovoltaic (PV) power affected by irradiation conditions, weaken the frequent disturbance to the distribution network, and, thus, enhance its acceptance to PV, a fuel cell/supercapacitor hybrid energy storage device (FSHESS) is configured on the DC side of a grid-connected PV system, which is combined with the PV unit to form a hybrid PV power generation system, i.e., the PV-FSHESS. Based on the analysis of the electrical characteristics of the FC and the SC, an improved low-pass filtering method based on rules and considering the state of charge constraint of the SC is proposed for the power allocation of the FSHESS. With respect to the problem of DC-bus voltage stabilization, a modified variable speed integral nonlinear PI controller is presented for the purpose of overcoming the following disadvantages: (i) the ordinary PI controller cannot adaptively adjust the cumulative speed of the integral term in line with the deviation, which may cause large overshoot and oscillation; and (ii) the conventional variable speed integral controller has more parameters, which increases the difficulty of parameter tuning. The simulation verification is carried out under different operating conditions of PV output power and load demands, and the results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. Hydrogen (H2) offers a green medium for storing the excess from renewables production instead of dumping it, thus being crucial to decarbonisation efforts. Hydrogen also offers a storage medium for the grid’s cheap electricity to be used during grid peak demand or grid power cutoffs. Funded by the Scottish Government’s Emerging Energy Technologies, this paper presents the design and performance analysis of a hydrogen uninterruptible power supply (H2GEN) for Cygnas Solutions Ltd., which is intended to enable continuity of supply in the residential sector while eradicating the need for environmentally and health risky lead–acid batteries and diesel generator backup. This paper presents the design, optimal sizing and analysis of two H2Gen architectures, one powered by the grid alone and the other powered by both the grid and a renewable (PV) source. By developing a model of each architecture in the HOMER space and using residential location weather data, the home yearly load–demand profile, and the grid yearly power outages profile in the developed models, the optimal sizing of each H2Gen design was realised by minimising the costs while ensuring the H2Gen meets the home power demand during grid outages To enable HOMER to optimise its selection, the sizes, technical specifications and costs of all the market-available H2GEN components were added in the HOMER search space. Moreover, the developed models were also used in assessing the sensitivity of the simulation outputs to several changes in the modelled system design and settings. Using a residential home with frequent power outages in New Delhi, India as a case study, it was found that the optimal sizing of H2Gen Architecture 1 is comprised of a 2 kW electrolyser, a 0.2 kg type-I tank, and a 2 kW water-cooled fuel cell directly connected to the AC bus, offering an operational lifetime of 14.3 years. It was also found that the optimal sizing of Architecture 2 is comprised of a 1 kV PV utilised with the same 2 kW electrolyser, 0.2 kg type-I tank and 2 kW water-cooled fuel cell connected to the AC bus. While the second design was found to have a higher capital cost due to the added PV, it offered a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly architecture, which contributes to the ongoing energy transition. This paper further investigated the capacity expansion of each H2GEN architecture to meet higher load demands or increased grid power outages. From the analysis of the simulation results, it has been concluded that the most feasible and cost-effective H2GEN system expansion for meeting increased power demands or increased grid outages can be realised by using the developed models for optimally sizing the expanded H2Gen on a case-by-case basis because the increase in these profiles is highly time-dependent (for example, an increased load demand or increased grid outage in the morning can be met by the PV, while in the evening, it must be met by the H2GEN). Finally, this paper investigated the impact of other environmental variables, such as the temperature and relative humidity, on the H2GEN’s performance and provided further insights into increasing the overall system efficiency and cost benefit through utilising the H2GEN’s exhaust heat in the home space for heating/cooling and selling the electrolyser exhaust’s O2 as a commodity. Separate DC-DC converters for each energy source are typically configured in fuel-cell hybrid vehicles. This results in a complex control structure of the powertrain system, low energy density of the converter, and high cost due to the large number of components. Conducting research on DC-DC converters with good energy flow management and high integration is a trend to solve such problems. Based on the analysis of the basic functional structure of the converter, this paper designs a buffering unit circuit with energy collection and distribution functions and appropriately connects it with the pulse unit circuit of the converter. Through device optimization reuse and power transmission path integration, a class of non-isolated four-port DC-DC converters is constructed, which consists of an auxiliary energy charging module, input energy source control module, braking energy feedback module and forward bootstrap boost circuit. This converter has two bi-directional ports, a uni-directional input and a bi-directional output, for separate connection to the power batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and DC bus. It can adapt to the fluctuation of the vehicle’s driving condition while achieving dynamic and flexible regulation of power flow and can flexibly allocate power according to the load current and voltage level of energy. It can realize a total of 14 operation modes, including six output power supply operation modes, five auxiliary power charging operation modes, and three braking energy regeneration operation modes. Furthermore, the mathematical model of this converter is constructed using the state-average method and the small-signal modeling method in order to achieve the responsiveness and stability of switching multiple operating modalities. The PI control parameters are optimized using the particle swarm optimization algorithm to achieve optimized control of the converter. The simulation system is set up using MATLAB R2024a to verify that the proposed converter topology and algorithm can dynamically allocate appropriate current paths to manipulate the power flow under various operating conditions, effectively improving the utilization rate and efficiency of energy. The converter has the characteristics of high gain and high power density, which is suitable for three-energy fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. Full article

The integration of electrolyzers and fuel cells can cause voltage fluctuations within microgrids if not properly scheduled. Therefore, controlling voltage and reactive power becomes crucial to mitigate the impact of fluctuating voltage levels, ensuring system stability and preventing damage to equipment. This paper, therefore, seeks to enhance voltage and reactive power control within reconfigurable microgrids in the presence of innovative power-to-hydrogen technologies via electrolyzers and hydrogen-to-power through fuel cells. Specifically, it focuses on the simultaneous coordination of an electrolyzer, hydrogen storage, and a fuel cell alongside on-load tap changers, smart photovoltaic inverters, renewable energy sources, diesel generators, and electric vehicle aggregation within the microgrid system. Additionally, dynamic network reconfiguration is employed to enhance microgrid flexibility and improve the overall system adaptability. Given the inherent unpredictability linked to resources, the unscented transformation method is employed to account for these uncertainties in the proposed voltage and reactive power management. Finally, the model is formulated as a convex optimization problem and is solved through GUROBI version 11, which leads to having a time-efficient model with high accuracy. To assess the effectiveness of the model, it is eventually examined on a modified 33-bus microgrid in several cases. Through the results of the under-study microgrid, the developed model is a great remedy for the simultaneous operation of diverse resources in reconfigurable microgrids with a flatter voltage profile across the microgrid. With the continuous improvement of battery energy density and converter power density, as well as the miniaturization and lightweighting of related airborne electrical equipment, all-electric aircraft with hybrid power supply systems provide more trade-off space and possibilities for the design of future aircraft. It is indispensable to search for a more valuable topology and apply it to airborne power supply. This paper proposes an airborne high-gain unidirectional DC-DC converter suitable for between low-voltage unit and high-voltage bus, which consists of interleaved magnetic integrated switched coupled inductor units and improved switch capacitor units. This paper first analyzes the steady-state operating characteristics under different modes; the new topology has higher voltage gain and lower stress. Secondly, in response to the challenges of high efficiency and high power density, we propose a magnetic integration design method and comprehensive experimental scheme based on the EIE-type magnetic core structure. This successfully integrates multiple discrete inductors into a single magnetic core. Furthermore, based on the comprehensive consideration of steady-state, transient performance and power density, the general design criteria for a high-gain switched coupled inductor are summarized through the equivalent mathematical model of reverse flux coupling. Additionally, by adjusting the coupling coefficient, the converter can achieve zero-voltage switching under light load conditions, demonstrating versatility and scalability and better meeting the application requirements of electric aircraft. The proposed prototype can provide voltage gain in the range of 12–22 times the input voltage gain by varying the input voltage from a 12–24 V fuel cell. The comprehensive performance of the converter, including steady-state, transient, and efficiency, was tested under D < 0.5 and D > 0.5. The experimental results show that the proposed converter possesses advantages such as high gain and low stress, a high dynamic response and low ripple, and high efficiency and high power density, which can provide a more advantageous DC-DC converter solution for airborne hybrid power supply systems. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are among the devices that have emerged in recent years. To provide electricity to the electric motors, they use a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the primary energy source and a secondary source consisting of an energy storage system (battery or supercapacitors). The addition of these sources to the motors and accessories of a vehicle requires the association of static converters to condition the different power sources. In addition, a high-efficiency and enhanced-reliability power converter is essential to connect the PEMFC to the vehicle’s DC bus. This paper proposes a robust feedback controller for a four-phase interleaved boost converter used with PEMFC. The proposed controller has double loops based on a state-feedback controller, and an inner loop which translates the differential equation of the system into a state representation by linearization around its operation points. The reference current is generated by state feedback in the outer loop; the state variable is defined by using a change variable. The strong robustness and highly dynamic characteristics of the proposed controller are demonstrated through its performance in terms of output voltage, source current, and settling time. The findings indicate that the proposed controller achieves a response time of 20 ms, resulting in an over 50% improvement compared to the controllers referenced in the literature. Additionally, it reduces both current and voltage ripple, keeping them each below 10%. Further, the controller gains synthesis is validated using the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) technique as well as boundary conditions, and its robustness is verified, taking into account the uncertainty of various operating conditions and discrepancies in circuit components. A double-loop super-twisting sliding mode controller, a backstepping control algorithm, and a PI controller are selected for comparison and discussion. Subsequently, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is evaluated through simulation with the parameters of a 500 W fuel cell system. Full article

To combat global warming, many industrialized countries have announced plans to ban vehicles powered by fossil fuel in the near future. In alignment with this global initiative, many countries across the globe are committed to decarbonizing their public transportation sector, which significantly contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions. A promising strategy to achieve this goal is the adoption of electric buses, specifically battery electric buses and fuel cell electric buses. Each technology offers distinct advantages and drawbacks, making the decision-making process complex. This research aims to answer two critical questions: What is the optimal choice for decarbonizing the bus transportation sector—electric battery buses or fuel cell electric buses? And what are the best energy carrier pathways for charging or refueling these buses? We propose a methodological framework based on multi-criteria decision-making to address these questions comprehensively. This framework utilizes the entropy weighting and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methodologies to rank alternative bus technologies along with energy carrier pathways. The framework evaluates a range of criteria, including economic viability, energy demand, and environmental aspects. To illustrate the framework, we considered Qatar as a case study. Our results indicate that, with respect to economic viability and energy consumption, the operation of battery electric buses is favored over fuel cell electric buses, regardless of the energy pathway utilized during both the energy production and bus operation phases. However, from an environmental perspective, operating both bus alternatives using energy from green sources provides superior performance compared to when these buses are powered by natural gas sources. This paper presents a comprehensive review of scientific papers and market reports analyzing the economic competitiveness of fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) with respect to their conventional alternatives via the total cost of ownership (TCO) methodology. We discussed the variables and data taken into account and compared the resulting outcomes by year and geographical areas. It emerged that FCBs are not currently cost competitive. The decreasing trend in acquisition and fuel costs, however, indicates potential for future competitiveness. We find that the current TCO literature on FCEBs presents several areas of uncertainty and weakness. Potential improvements can be achieved by: (i) extending the geographic coverage to Asian and African developing countries; (ii) making use of real-world data instead of simulated data, in particular, concerning acquisition costs, hydrogen costs under different pathways, fuel efficiency, and maintenance costs; (iii) clarifying the role of infrastructural costs; (iv) exploring the existence of economies of scale at fleet level; (v) distinguishing among different bus sizes.
