Elasticity is a well-established field within mathematical physics, yet new formulations can provide deeper insight and computational advantages. This study explores the geometry of two- and three-dimensional elastic curves using the formalism of geometric algebra, offering a unified and coordinate-free approach. This work systematically derives the Frenet, Darboux, and Bishop frames within the three-dimensional geometric algebra and employs them to integrate the elastica equation. A concise Lagrangian formulation of the problem is introduced, enabling the identification of Noetherian, conserved, multi-vector moments associated with the elastic system. A particularly compact form of the elastica equation emerges when expressed in the Bishop frame, revealing structural simplifications and making the equations more amenable to analysis. Ultimately, the geometric algebra perspective uncovers a natural correspondence between the theory of free elastic curves and classical beam models, showing how constrained theories, such as Euler–Bernoulli and Kirchhoff beam formulations, arise as special cases. These results not only clarify foundational aspects of elasticity theory but also provide a framework for future applications in continuum mechanics and geometric modeling. Full article

To our knowledge, no magnetic B2 phase in the Al–Mn system of near-equiatomic compositions has been reported so far. Here, we investigate the structural and magnetic characteristics of Al45Mn41.8X13.2 (X = Fe, Co or Ni) alloys. We demonstrate that adding 13.2 atomic percent magnetic 3d metal to AlMn stabilizes a ferromagnetic B2 structure, where Al and X occupy different sublattices. We employ density functional theory calculations and experimental characterizations to underscore the role of the late 3d metals for the phase stability of the quasi-ordered ternary systems. We show that these alloys possess large local magnetic moments primarily due to Mn atoms partitioned to the Al-free sublattice. The revealed magneto-chemical effect opens alternative routes for tailoring the magnetic properties of B2 intermetallic compounds for various magnetic applications. Full article

The existence of fault zones in high-intensity earthquake areas has a serious impact on engineering structures, and the longitudinal response of tunnels crossing faults needs further in-depth research. To analyze the tangential contact effect between the surrounding rock and the tunnel lining, and the axial deformation characteristics of the tunnel structure, tangential foundation springs were introduced and a theoretical model for the longitudinal response of the tunnel under fault dislocation was established. Firstly, the tunnel was simplified as a finite-length beam. The normal and tangential springs were taken to represent the interaction between the soil and the lining. The fault’s free-field displacement was applied at the end of the normal foundation spring to simulate fault dislocation, and the differential equation for the longitudinal response of the tunnel structure was obtained. The analytical solution of the structural response was obtained using the Green’s function method. Then, the three-dimensional finite difference method was used to verify the effectiveness of the analytical model in this paper. The results show that the tangential contact effect between the surrounding rock and the lining has a significant impact on the longitudinal response of the tunnel structure. Ignoring this effect leads to an error of up to 35.33% in the peak value of the structural bending moment. Finally, the influences of the width of the fault zone, the soil stiffness of the fault zone, and the stiffness of the tunnel lining on the longitudinal response of the tunnel were explored. As the fault width increases, the internal force of the tunnel structure decreases. Increasing the lining concrete grade leads to an increase in the internal force of the structure. The increase in the elastic modulus of the surrounding rock in the fault area reduces the bending moment and shear force of the structure and increases the axial force. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for the anti-dislocation design of tunnels crossing faults. Full article

Channels with three standard symmetrical sections and one asymmetric section are mounted as cantilever beams with the web oriented vertically. A classical solution to the analysis of stress in each thin-walled cantilever channel is provided using the principle of wall shear flow superposition. The latter is coupled with a further superposition between axial stress arising from bending and from the constraint placed on free warping imposed at the fixed end. Closed solutions for design are tabulated for the net shear stress and the net axial stress at points around any section within the length. Stress distributions thus derived serve as a benchmark structure for alternative numerical solutions and for experimental investigations. The conversion of the transverse free end-loading applied to a thin-walled cantilever channel into the shear and axial stress that it must bear is outlined. It is shown that the point at which this loading is applied within the cross-section is crucial to this stress conversion. When a single force is applied to an arbitrary point at the free-end section, three loading effects arise generally: bending, flexural shear and torsion. The analysis of each effect requires that this force’s components are resolved to align with the section’s principal axes. These forces are then considered in reference to its centroid and to its shear centre. This shows that axial stress arises directly from bending and from the constraint imposed on free warping at the fixed end. Shear stress arises from flexural shear and also from torsion with a load offset from the shear centre. When the three actions are combined, the net stresses of each action are considered within the ability of the structure to resist collapse from plasticity and buckling. The novelty herein refers to the presentation of the shear flow calculations within a thin wall as they arise from an end load offset from the shear centre. It is shown how the principle of superposition can be applied to individual shear flow and axial stress distributions arising from flexural bending, shear and torsion. Therein, the new concept of a ‘trans-moment’ appears from the transfer in moments from their axes through centroid G to parallel axes through shear centre E. The trans-moment complements the static equilibrium condition, in which a shift in transverse force components from G to E is accompanied by torsion and bending about the flexural axis through E. In order to explore the essence of the anticoccidiosis of anticoccidial drugs under bioelectric currents, the intermolecular double-proton transfer and conformational transformation of 4-pyridone-3-carboxylic acid were investigated by quantum chemistry calculations (at the M06-2X/6-311++G**, M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ and CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ levels) and finite temperature string (FTS) under external electric fields. The solvent effect of H2O on the double-proton transfer was evaluated by the integral equation formalism polarized continuum model. The results indicate that the influences of the external electric fields along the direction of the dipole moment on double-proton transfer are significant. The corresponding products are controlled by the direction of the external electric field. Due to the first-order Stark effect, some good linear relationships form between the changes of the structures, atoms in molecules (AIMs) results, surface electrostatic potentials, barriers of the transition state, and the external electric field strengths. From the gas to solvent phase, the barrier heights increased. The spatial order parameters (ϕ, ψ) of the conformational transformation could be quickly converged through the umbrella sampling and parameter averaging, and thus the free-energy landscape for the conformational transformation was obtained. Under the external electric field, there is competition between the double-proton transfer and conformational transformation. The external electric field greatly affects the cooperativity transfer, while it has little effect on the conformational transformation. This study is helpful in the selection and updating of anticoccidial drugs. Full article

This paper proposes a speed-adaptive autonomous driving path-tracking framework based on the soft actor–critic (SAC) and pure pursuit (PP) methods, named the SACPP controller. The framework first analyzes the obstacles around the vehicle and plans an obstacle-free reference path with the minimum curvature using the hybrid A* algorithm. Next, based on the generated reference path, the current state of the vehicle, and the vehicle motor energy efficiency diagram, the optimal speed is calculated in real time, and the vehicle dynamics preview point at the future moment—specifically, the look-ahead distance—is predicted. This process relies on the learning of the SAC network structure. Finally, PP is used to generate the front wheel angle control value by combining the current speed and the predicted preview point. In the second layer, we carefully designed the evaluation function in the tracking process based on the uncertainties and performance requirements that may occur during vehicle driving. This design ensures that the autonomous vehicle can not only quickly and accurately track the path, but also effectively avoid surrounding obstacles, while keeping the motor running in the high-efficiency range, thereby reducing energy loss. In addition, since the entire framework uses a lightweight network structure and a geometry-based method to generate the front wheel angle, the computational load is significantly reduced, and computing resources are saved. The actual running results on the i7 CPU show that the control cycle of the control framework exceeds 100 Hz. Full article

The intentional yaw offset of wind turbines has shown potential to redirect wakes, enhancing overall plant power production, but it may increase fatigue loading on turbine components. This study analyzed fatigue loads on the NREL 5 MW reference wind turbine under varying yaw offsets using blade element momentum theory, dynamic blade element momentum, and the converging Lagrange filaments vortex method, all implemented in OpenFAST. Simulations employed yaw angles from −40° to 40°, with turbulent inflow generated by TurbSim, an OpenFAST tool for realistic wind conditions. Fatigue loads were calculated according to IEC 61400-1 design load case 1.2 standards, using thirty simulations per yaw angle across five wind speed bins. Damage equivalent load was evaluated via rainflow counting, Miner’s rule, and Goodman correction. Results showed that the free vortex method, by modeling unsteady aerodynamic forces, yielded distinct differences in damage equivalent load compared to the blade element method in yawed conditions. The free vortex method predicted lower damage equivalent load for the low-speed shaft bending moment at negative yaw offsets, attributed to its improved handling of unsteady effects that reduce load variations. Conversely, for yaw offsets above 20°, the free vortex method indicated higher damage equivalent for low-speed shaft torque, reflecting its accurate capture of dynamic inflow and unsteady loading. These findings highlight the critical role of unsteady aerodynamics in fatigue load predictions and demonstrate the free vortex method’s value within OpenFAST for realistic damage equivalent load estimates in yawed turbines. The results emphasize the need to incorporate unsteady aerodynamic models like the free vortex method to accurately assess yaw offset impacts on wind turbine component fatigue. Full article

The integration of tilted photovoltaic strings on large, flat roofs, typical of industrial and commercial buildings, raises complex design challenges, particularly regarding wind-induced loads. This study presents a comprehensive wind tunnel investigation aimed at evaluating the aerodynamic effects on rooftop PV strings under various representative configurations and the correlation between characteristic geometric parameters such as tilt angle, bottom clearance, row spacing, and wind direction. Following a literature review, a detailed 1:10 scaled model with geometric adjustment capabilities was developed and eventually tested in a boundary-layer wind tunnel. High-resolution pressure measurements were processed to derive force and moment resultants normalised by reference wind pressure. Envelopes of force/moment resultants are presented for each representative geometric configuration and for each wind exposure angle. The results present severe variations in local wind actions, particularly significant at the strings’ free ends and for oblique wind angles. The severe underestimation of local wind loads by standard codes is discussed. The findings underline the importance of detailed wind-load assessment for both new constructions and retrofits, suggesting that reliance solely on code provisions might result in unsafe designs. A variational formulation and variationally consistent boundary conditions were derived for a coupled system of two boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), with the piezoelectric and surface effects taken into account in the formulation. The coupling between the nanotubes was defined in terms of Winkler and Pasternak interlayers. The equations governing the vibrations of the coupled system were expressed as a system of four partial differential equations based on nonlocal elastic theory. After deriving the variational principle for the double BNNT system, Hamilton’s principle was expressed in terms of potential and kinetic energies. Next, the differential equations for the free vibration case were presented and the variational form for this case was derived. The Rayleigh quotient was formulated for the vibration frequency, which indicated that piezoelectric and surface effects led to higher vibration frequencies. Next, the variationally consistent boundary conditions were formulated in terms of moment and shear force expressions. It was observed that the presence of the Pasternak interlayer between the nanotubes led to coupled boundary conditions when a shear force and/or a moment was specified at the boundaries. Full article

In the modern corporation, understanding sustainable cost management practices is essential for promoting economic resilience and resource efficiency. This study investigates how ownership structures influence the behavior of selling, and general and administrative (SG&A) costs during periods of sales fluctuations in South Korean firms, with particular attention to Chaebols. Drawing upon agency theory and corporate governance perspectives, we examine whether proxies for agency costs, namely, free cash flow, asset utilization ratios, and operating expense ratios, explain variations in SG&A cost responses to changes in revenue. Utilizing a panel dataset of 4279 firm-year observations from KOSPI-listed companies over the period 2011–2021, we employ Pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Fixed Effects, Random Effects, and Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimations to model SG&A cost behavior. The analysis incorporates regression-based interaction terms that capture asymmetric cost adjustments during sales declines, commonly referred to as cost stickiness. Our findings indicate that firms with concentrated ownership, such as Chaebols, exhibit significantly lower SG&A cost stickiness, reflecting stronger financial discipline and more efficient resource allocation. In contrast, firms with dispersed ownership demonstrate more pronounced cost stickiness, consistent with governance frictions and managerial discretion. These results emphasize the moderating role of ownership structure in cost behavior and highlight its implications for sustainable corporate governance. Our study contributes to the literature on cost management and financial sustainability by offering empirical insights from a distinctive institutional setting. Policy recommendations include enhancing internal controls, promoting transparent cost practices, and encouraging shareholder oversight to reinforce long-term efficiency. Full article

Tunnel lining structures, which are subjected to the combined effects of water and soil pressure as well as a water-rich erosion environment, undergo a corrosion-induced damage and degradation process in the reinforced concrete, gradually leading to structural failure and a significant decline in service performance. By introducing the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) and the concrete damage plastic model (CDP), a three-dimensional numerical model of the tunnel lining structure in mining method tunnels was established. This model takes into account the multiple effects caused by steel reinforcement corrosion, including the degradation of the reinforcement’s performance, the loss of an effective concrete cross section, and the deterioration of the bond between the steel reinforcement and the concrete. Through this model, the deformation, internal forces, damage evolution, and degradation characteristics of the structure under the effects of the surrounding rock water–soil pressure and steel reinforcement corrosion are identified. The simulation results reveal the following: (1) Corrosion leads to a reduction in the stiffness of the lining structure, exacerbating its deformation. For example, under high water pressure conditions, the displacement at the vault of the lining before and after corrosion is 4.31 mm and 7.14 mm, respectively, with an additional displacement increase of 65.7% due to corrosion. (2) The reinforced concrete lining structure, which is affected by the surrounding rock loads and expansion due to steel reinforcement corrosion, experiences progressive degradation, resulting in a redistribution of internal forces within the structure. The overall axial force in the lining slightly increases, while the bending moment at the vault, spandrel, and invert decreases and the bending moment at the hance and arch foot increases. (3) The damage range of the tunnel lining structure continuously increases as corrosion progresses, with significant differences between the surrounding rock side and the free face side. Among the various parts of the lining, the vault exhibits the greatest damage depth and the widest cracks. (4) Water pressure significantly impacts the internal forces and crack width of the lining structure. As the water level drops, both the bending moment and the axial force diminish, while the damage range and crack width increase, with crack width increasing by 15.1% under low water pressure conditions. In this study, a correction procedure for ship mass and its longitudinal location of center of gravity suitable for a simulation environment is proposed in OpenFOAM v6.0. The concept is implemented ensuring static equilibrium and an approximately zero-pitch moment on the ship before the simulation. The viscous flow field around the ship in calm water is simulated using the VOF (Volume of Fluid) free surface two-phase and SST (Shear Stress Transport) kω turbulence models. Using static mesh, the resistance error of medium and fine grids is 4%, on average, against the experimental value. As the sinkage and trim are predicted using dynamic mesh, the increasing ship’s resistance causes larger errors, except for the container ship. Through the proposed correction, the ship’s vertical motions are significantly improved, and the resistance error decreases for the dynamic simulation. For the container ship, the error of resistance and motion achieved is less than 1%. The sinkage and trim errors improve tremendously for the tanker and bulk carrier, and the resistance errors are reduced slightly, by less than 3%. In the end, the detailed flow field is analyzed, as well as the ship wave-making pattern and the nominal wake velocity distribution, and these are compared with the measurement data available. The characteristics of the flow phenomena are successfully modeled. The resistance value for each hull form satisfies the requirement of Verification and Validation, and the uncertainty values are estimated. Full article

This study introduces the truncated (u,v)-half-normal distribution, a novel probability model defined on the bounded interval (u,v), with parameters σ and b. This distribution is designed to model processes with restricted domains, ensuring realistic and analytically tractable outcomes. Some key properties of the proposed model, including its cumulative distribution function, probability density function, survival function, hazard rate, and moments, are derived and analyzed. Parameter estimation of σ and b is achieved through a hybrid approach, combining maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) for σ and a likelihood-free-inspired technique for b. A sensitivity analysis highlighting the dependence of σ on b, and an optimal estimation algorithm is proposed. The proposed model is applied to two real-world data sets, where it demonstrates superior performance over some existing models based on goodness-of-fit criteria, such as the known AIC, BIC, CAIC, KS, AD, and CvM statistics. The results emphasize the model’s flexibility and robustness for practical applications in modeling data with bounded support. Full article

The loads of a model tilt-proprotor with a gimbaled hub were measured in the wind tunnel of CHRDI, operating at 90°, 80°, 70°, 60°, and 45° inclination angles to represent the rotor loads of helicopter and transient flight modes. The flap, lead-lag moments, and pitch rod forces were measured. A comprehensive model was established with both linear inflow and free-wake non-linear inflow models. It is shown that there is a better correlation of alternating flap bending moments between test data and linear inflow model predicted values for the helicopter mode and a good correlation between measured data and free-wake predicted values for transition modes. The static moments are well captured by all inflow models at high thrust coefficients, while they fail to reflect the flap bending direction of the blade root at low thrust coefficients. Neither of the inflow models captured higher harmonics of the blade flap bending moments. The measured 2/rev harmonics of the lag bending moments lie between the linear inflow model and the free wake model predicted values. The current model with no dynamic stall model failed to capture the oscillating loads of the pitch rod. Full article

Background/Objectives: A 43-year-old male presented with neurological symptoms and asymptomatic cardiac dysfunction, left ventricular hypertrophy, and impaired global longitudinal strain with apical sparing, associated with elevated NT-proBNP. Methods: Multimodality imaging (bone scintigraphy and cardiac magnetic resonance) revealed cardiac amyloid deposition. Genetic testing confirmed variant transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) with mixed phenotype. Results: Treatment with tafamidis 20 mg for stage I polyneuropathy, available at that moment, was initiated with good neurological outcome. Three years later, cardiac function deteriorated, following a moderate COVID-19 infection, with heart failure symptoms and reduced ventricular and atrial functions. For progressive ATTR cardiomyopathy, we intensified therapy to tafamidis free acid 61 mg, associated with SGLT2 inhibitor, spironolactone, and furosemide with subsequent improvements of symptoms and stabilization of imaging findings. Conclusions: This case emphasizes the importance of multimodal imaging in early detection, monitoring, and guiding individualized management in ATTR cardiomyopathy. Full article
