Optically transparent polyimide (PI) films with good atomic oxygen (AO) resistance have been paid extensive attention as thermal controls, optical substrates for solar cells or other components for low Earth orbit (LEO) space applications. However, for common PI films, it is usually quite difficult to achieve both high optical transparency and AO resistance and maintain the intrinsic thermal stability of the PI films at the same time. In the current work, we aimed to achieve the target by using the copolymerization methodology using the fluorinated dianhydride 9,9-bis(trifluoromethyl)xanthene-2,3,6,7-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (6FCDA), the fluorinated diamine 2,2-bis [4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane (BDAF) and the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-containing diamine N-[(heptaisobutyl-POSS)propyl]-3,5-diaminobenzamide (DABA-POSS) as the starting materials. The fluoro-containing monomers were used to endow the PI films with good optical and thermal properties, while the silicon-containing monomer was used to improve the AO resistance of the afforded PI films. Thus, the 6FCDA-based PI copolymers, including 6FCPI-1, 6FCPI-2 and 6FCPI-3, were prepared using a two-step chemical imidization procedure, respectively. For comparison, the analogous PIs, including 6FPI-1, 6FPI-2 and 6FPI-3, were correspondingly developed according to the same procedure except that 6FCDA was replaced by 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Two referenced PI homopolymers were prepared from BDAF and 6FDA (PI-ref1) and 6FCDA (PI-ref2), respectively. The experimental results indicated that a good balance among thermal stability, optical transparency, and AO resistance was achieved by the 6FCDA-PI films. For example, the 6FCDA-PI films exhibited good thermal stability with glass transition temperatures (Tg) up to 297.3 °C, good optical transparency with an optical transmittance at a wavelength of 450 nm (T450) higher than 62% and good AO resistance with the erosion yield (Ey) as low as 1.7 × 10−25 cm3/atom at an AO irradiation fluence of 5.0 × 1020 atoms/cm2. The developed 6FCDA-PI films might find various applications in aerospace as solar sails, thermal control blankets, optical components and other functional materials. Full article

Preparation of hydrophobic coatings is still a challenge for researchers in various fields of science. One of the easiest ways consists of the use of special modifiers. However, usually such modifiers are poorly compatible with organic polymeric matrixes, which leads to segregation of modifiers and deterioration of coating properties. In this work, we have synthesized a number of organosilicon copolymers and studied their compatibility with epoxy matrix and hydrophobic efficiency. It was shown that the increase of phenyl-containing units leads to increase of compatibility but decreases hydrophobic efficiency. Addition of small amounts of such modifiers into commercial epoxy paint material can lead to an increase of contact angle of the final coating from 63 to 87° without deterioration of other physico-mechanical properties. These results open new perspectives in preparation of organosilicon hydrophobic modifiers with directed properties for fields of application such as paints and coating materials. Full article

This work unfolds functionalized ABSs composed of FILs ([C2C1Im][C4F9SO3] and [N1112(OH)][C4F9SO3]), mere fluoro-containing ILs ([C2C1Im][CF3SO3] and [C4C1Im][CF3SO3]), known globular protein stabilizers (sucrose and [N1112(OH)][C4F9SO3]), low-molecular-weight carbohydrate (glucose), and even high-charge density salt (K3PO4). The ternary phase diagrams were determined, stressing that FILs highly increased the ability for ABS formation. The functionalized ABSs (FILs vs. mere fluoro-containing ILs) were used to extract lysozyme (Lys). The ABSs’ biphasic regions were screened in terms of protein biocompatibility, analyzing the impact of ABS phase-forming components in Lys by UV-VIS spectrophotometry, CD spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, DSC, and enzyme assay. Lys partition behavior was characterized in terms of extraction efficiency (% EE). The structure, stability, and function of Lys were maintained or improved throughout the extraction step, as evaluated by CD spectroscopy, DSC, enzyme assay, and SDS-PAGE. Overall, FIL-based ABSs are more versatile and amenable to being tuned by the adequate choice of the phase-forming components and selecting the enriched phase. Binding studies between Lys and ABS phase-forming components were attained by MST, demonstrating the strong interaction between Lys and FILs aggregates. Two of the FIL-based ABSs (30 %wt [C2C1Im][C4F9SO3] + 2 %wt K3PO4 and 30 %wt [C2C1Im][C4F9SO3] + 25 %wt sucrose) allowed the simultaneous purification of Lys and BSA in a single ABS extraction step with high yield (extraction efficiency up to 100%) for both proteins. The purity of both recovered proteins was validated by SDS-PAGE analysis. Even with a high-charge density salt, the FIL-based ABSs developed in this work seem more amenable to be tuned. Lys and BSA were purified through selective partition to opposite phases in a single FIL-based ABS extraction step. FIL-based ABSs are proposed as an improved extraction step for proteins, based on their biocompatibility, customizable properties, and selectivity. Full article

The FDA has approved several drugs based on the fluorinated nucleoside pharmacophore, and numerous drugs are currently in clinical trials. Fluorine-containing nucleos(t)ides offer significant antiviral and anticancer activity. The insertion of a fluorine atom, either in the base or sugar of nucleos(t)ides, alters its electronic and steric parameters and transforms the lipophilicity, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacokinetic properties of these moieties. The fluorine atom restricts the oxidative metabolism of drugs and provides enzymatic metabolic stability towards the glycosidic bond of the nucleos(t)ide. The incorporation of fluorine also demonstrates additional hydrogen bonding interactions in receptors with enhanced biological profiles. The present article discusses the synthetic methodology and antiviral activities of FDA-approved drugs and ongoing fluoro-containing nucleos(t)ide drug candidates in clinical trials. Full article

Interferon alpha-2b (IFN-α2b) is an essential cytokine widely used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C and hairy cell leukemia, and serum albumin is the most abundant plasma protein with numerous physiological functions. Effective single-step aqueous biphasic system (ABS) extraction for the simultaneous purification of IFN-α2b and BSA (serum albumin protein) was developed in this work. Effects of the ionic liquid (IL)-based ABS functionalization, fluorinated ILs (FILs; [C2C1Im][C4F9SO3] and [N1112(OH)][C4F9SO3]) vs. mere fluoro-containing IL ([C4C1Im][CF3SO3]), in combination with sucrose or [N1112(OH)][H2PO4] (well-known globular protein stabilizers), or high-charge-density salt K3PO4 were investigated. The effects of phase pH, phase water content (%wt), phase composition (%wt), and phase volume ratio were investigated. The phase pH was found to have a significant effect on IFN-α2b and BSA partition. Experimental results show that simultaneous single-step purification was achieved with a high yield (extraction efficiency up to 100%) for both proteins and a purification factor of IFN-α2b high in the enriched IFN-α2b phase (up to 23.22) and low in the BSA-enriched phase (down to 0.00). SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the purity of both recovered proteins. The stability and structure of IFN-α2b and BSA were preserved or even improved (FIL-rich phase) during the purification step, as evaluated by CD spectroscopy and DSC. Binding studies of IFN-α2b and BSA with the ABS phase-forming components were assessed by MST, showing the strong interaction between FILs aggregates and both proteins. In view of their biocompatibility, customizable properties, and selectivity, FIL-based ABSs are suggested as an improved purification step that could facilitate the development of biologics. Colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) films with good atomic oxygen (AO) resistance and high thermal endurance are highly required in low earth orbit (LEO) space exploration. Conventional CPI films based on fluoro-containing 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) have been widely used in space applications. However, the AO erosion yields and glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the 6FDA-based CPI films have to be modified in order to meet the severe serving environments. In the current work, novel CPI films based on a multi-ring fluoro-containing 9,9-bis(trifluoromethyl)xanthene-2,3,6,7-tetracarboxylicdianhydride (6FCDA) monomer were developed. In order to enhance the AO resistance of the derived CPI film, a phosphorus-containing aromatic diamine, 2,5-bis[(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]diphenylphosphine oxide (BADPO) was used to polymerize with the dianhydride to create the organo-soluble resin. Then, two phosphorus-containing CPI films (PPI), including PPI-1 (6FDA-BADPO) and PPI-2 (6FCDA-BADPO) were prepared by thermally curing of the PPI solutions at elevated temperatures. The PPI films maintained good optical transparency with transmittance values over 80% at a wavelength of 450 nm. PPI-2 exhibited a Tg value of 311.0 °C by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, which was 46.7 °C higher than that of the PPI-1 counterpart (Tg = 264.3 °C). In addition, the PPI-2 film showed a coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CTE) value of 41.7 × 10−6/K in the range of 50~250 °C, which was apparently lower than that of the PPI-1 sample (CTE = 49.2 × 10−6/K). Lastly, both of the two PPI films exhibited good AO resistance with the erosion yields (Ey) of 6.99 × 10−25 cm3/atom for PPI-1 and 7.23 × 10−25 cm3/atom for PPI-2 at an exposure flux of 5.0 × 1020 atoms/cm2. The Ey values of the current PPI films were obviously lower than that of the standard polyimide (PI) film based on pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA) (Ey = 3.0 × 10−24 cm3/atom). Light-colored and transparent polyimide (PI) films with good high-temperature dimensional stability are highly desired for advanced optoelectronic applications. However, in practice, the simultaneous achievement of good optical and thermal properties in one PI film is usually difficult due to the inter-conflicting molecular design of the polymers. In the present work, a series of PI-SiO2 nanocomposite films (ABTFCPI) were developed based on the PI matrix derived from hydrogenated pyromellitic anhydride (HPMDA) and an aromatic diamine containing benzanilide and trifluoromethyl substituents in the structure, 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-bis [4-(4-aminobenzamide)]biphenyl (ABTFMB). The inorganic SiO2 fillers were incorporated into the nanocomposite films in the form of colloidal nanoparticles dispersed in the good solvent of N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) for the PI matrix. The derived ABTFCPI nanocomposite films showed good film-forming ability, flexible and tough nature, good optical transparency, and good thermal properties with loading amounts of SiO2 up to 30 wt% in the system. The ABTFCPI-30 film with a SiO2 content of 30 wt% in the film showed an optical transmittance of 79.6% at the wavelength of 400 nm (T400) with a thickness of 25 μm, yellow index (b*) of 2.15, and 5% weight loss temperatures (T5%) of 491 °C, which are all comparable to those the pristine ABTFCPI-0 matrix without filler (T400 = 81.8%; b* = 1.77; T5% = 492 °C). Meanwhile, the ABTFCPI-30 film exhibited obviously enhanced high-temperature dimensional stability with linear coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of 25.4 × 10−6/K in the temperature range of 50 to 250 °C, which is much lower than that of the AMTFCPI-0 film (CTE = 32.7 × 10−6/K). For this purpose, a multi-component copolymerization methodology was performed from a fluoro-containing dianhydride, 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), a rigid dianhydride, 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), and a fluoro-containing diamine, 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-bis [4-(4-amino-3-methyl)benzamide]biphenyl (MABTFMB). One homopolymer, FPI-1 (6FDA-MABTFMB), and five copolymers, FPI-2~FPI-6, containing the BPDA units from 10 mol% to 50 mol% in the dianhydride moieties, were prepared, respectively. The derived PI resins showed good solubility in the polar aprotic solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The flexible PI films obtained by the solution casting procedure showed good optical properties with the transmittances higher than 74.0% at the wavelength of 450 nm. The PI films exhibited excellent thermal properties, including 5% weight loss temperatures (T5%) over 510 °C, together with glass transition temperatures (Tg) over 350.0 °C according to the peak temperatures of the loss modulus in dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) measurements. The FPI-6 film also showed the lowest linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value of 23.4 × 10−6/K from 50 to 250 °C according to the thermomechanical analysis (TMA) measurements, which was obviously lower than that of FPI-1 (CTE = 30.6 × 10−6/K). Negative photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) with the photo-patterned ability via the photocrosslinking reactions induced by the i-line (365 nm) and h-line (426 nm) emitting wavelengths in high-pressure mercury lamps have been paid increasing attention in semiconductor fabrication, optical fiber communications, and other advanced optoelectronic areas. In the current work, in view of the optical and thermo-mechanical disadvantages of the currently used negative PSPIs, such as the intrinsically photosensitive or auto-photosensitive systems derived from 3,3’,4,4’-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and the ortho-alkyl- substituted aromatic diamines, a series of modified negative PSPIs with the enhanced optical transparency in the wavelength of 365~436 nm and apparently reduced coefficients of linear thermal expansion (CTE) were developed. For this purpose, a specific aromatic diamine with both of trifluoromethyl and benzanilide units in the molecular structures, 2,2’-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4’-bis[4-(4-amino-3-methyl)benzamide]biphenyl (MABTFMB) was copolymerized with BTDA and the standard 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethyl-4,4’-diaminodiphenylmethane (TMMDA) diamine via a two-step chemical imidization procedure. As compared with the pristine PI-1 (BTDA-TMMDA) system, the new-developed fluoro-containing PSPI systems (FPI-2~FPI-7) exhibited the same-level solubility in polar aprotic solvents, including N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and N,N- dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The FPI films cast from the corresponding FPI solutions in NMP showed the optical transmittances of 78.3–81.3% at the wavelength of 436 nm (T436, h-line), which were much higher than that of the PI-1 (T436 = 60.9%). The FPI films showed the CTE values in the range of 40.7 × 10−6/K to 54.0 × 10−6/K in the temperature range of 50 to 250 °C, which were obviously lower than that of PI-1 (CTE = 56.5 × 10−6/K). At last, the photosensitivity of the FPI systems was maintained and the micro-pattern with the line width of 10 μm could be clearly obtained via the standard photolithography process of FPI-7 with the molar ratio of 50% for MABTFMB in the diamine moiety. Polymeric nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) with both high whiteness and high thermal and ultraviolet (UV) stability are highly desired as reflectors for ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) devices. In the current work, a semi-alicyclic and fluoro-containing polyimide (PI) NFM with potential application in such kinds of circumstances was successfully fabricated from the organo-soluble PI resin solution via a one-step electrospinning procedure. In order to achieve the target, a semi-alicyclic PI resin was first designed and synthesized from an alicyclic dianhydride, 3,4-dicarboxy-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-decahydro-1-naphthalenesuccinic dianhydride (or hydrogenated tetralin dianhydride, HTDA), and a fluoro-containing diamine, 2,2-bis[4-(4-amino-phenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane (BDAF), via an imidization procedure. The derived PI (HTDA-BDAF) resin possessed a number-average molecular weight (Mn) higher than 33,000 g/mol and was highly soluble in polar aprotic solvents, such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The electrospinning solution was prepared by dissolving the PI resin in DMAc at a solid content of 25–35 wt%. For comparison, the conventional high-whiteness polystyrene (PS) NFM was prepared according to a similar electrospinning procedure. The thermal and UV stability of the derived PI and PS NFMs were investigated by exposure under the UV-LED (wavelength: 365 nm) irradiation. Various thermal evaluation results indicated that the developed PI (HTDA-BDAF) NFM could maintain both the high reflectance and high whiteness at elevated temperatures. For example, after thermal treatment at 200 °C for 1 h in air, the PI (HTDA-BDAF) NFM exhibited a reflectance at a wavelength of 457 nm (R457) of 89.0%, which was comparable to that of the pristine PI NMF (R457 = 90.2%). The PI (HTDA-BDAF) NFM exhibited a whiteness index (WI) of 90.88, which was also close to that of the pristine sample (WI = 91.22). However, for the PS NFM counterpart, the R457 value decreased from the pristine 88.4% to 18.1% after thermal treatment at 150 °C for 1 h, and the sample became transparent. The PI NFM maintained good optical and mechanical properties during the high dose (2670 J/cm2) of UV exposure, while the properties of the PS NFM apparently deteriorated under the same UV aging. In this article, a simple synthesis method was applied to form a branch and tendril structure using hydroxyl-terminated silicone sol modified silica nanoparticles at high temperature, followed by mixing with fluoro-containing polyacrylate emulsion (PFA) to obtained a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-SiO2/PFA hybrid coating. The hydrophobic performance of the PDMS-SiO2/PFA coating was further enhanced through the synergistic action of Si-O and F group. The obtained coating has a similar surface structure of lotus leaf and the contact angle can reach 142.2 ± 2.4°. The PDMS-SiO2/PFA coating could delay the formation of frost crystal and the growth of frost layer. The defrosting droplets were difficult to adhere on the coating and could be easily rolled off for long frosting and defrosting cycles, which indicates the potential application of this coating in the field of frost suppression. The rapid development of advanced high-frequency mobile communication techniques has advanced urgent requirements for polymer materials with high-temperature resistance and good dielectric properties, including low dielectric constants (low-Dk) and low dielectric dissipation factors (low-Df). The relatively poor dielectric properties of common polymer candidates, such as standard polyimides (PIs) greatly limited their application in high-frequency areas. In the current work, benzoxazole units were successfully incorporated into the molecular structures of the fluoro-containing PIs to afford the poly(imide-benzoxazole) (PIBO) nano-fibrous membranes (NFMs) via electrospinning fabrication. First, the PI NFMs were prepared by the electrospinning procedure from organo-soluble PI resins derived from 2,2′-bis(3,4-dicarboxy-phenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and aromatic diamines containing ortho-hydroxy-substituted benzamide units, including 2,2-bis[3-(4-aminobenzamide)-4-hydroxylphenyl]hexafluoropropane (p6FAHP) and 2,2-bis[3-(3-aminobenzamide)-4-hydroxyphenyl]hexafluoropropane (m6FAHP). Then, the PI NFMs were thermally dehydrated at 350 °C in nitrogen to afford the PIBO NFMs. The average fiber diameters (dav) for the PIBO NFMs were 1225 nm for PIBO-1 derived from PI-1 (6FDA-p6FAHP) precursor and 816 nm for PIBO-2 derived from PI-2 (6FDA-m6FAHP). The derived PIBO NFMs showed good thermal stability with the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) over 310 °C and the 5% weight loss temperatures (T5%) higher than 500 °C in nitrogen. The PIBO NFMs showed low dielectric features with the Dk value of 1.64 for PIBO-1 and 1.82 for PIBO-2 at the frequency of 1 MHz, respectively. The Df values were in the range of 0.010~0.018 for the PIBO NFMs. Full article
