With deep coal mining in China, high in situ stress frequently causes severe floor deformation, bolt-cable support failure, and excessive floor heave, which critically threaten mine safety. In this study, we use physical experiments, numerical simulation, and theoretical analysis to explore how hydraulic fractures with different azimuth angles affect stress transfer in roadways under floor dynamic pressure. Prefabricated fractures simulate weak planes induced by hydraulic fracturing. Uniaxial compression tests and PFC2D fluid–solid coupling simulations analyze mechanical properties, failure modes, acoustic emission behavior, and stress distribution. Results show that fracture azimuth significantly controls rock damage and failure modes. As the angle increases from 0° to 90°, failure changes from gradual degradation to sudden instability. Peak strength first decreases then increases, reaching the minimum at 22.5°, while roadway damage is minimal at 45°. Small-angle fractures lead to shear failure with clear precursors, and large-angle fractures cause sudden tensile failure. Hydraulic fractures form directional stress-relief zones and enable effective stress transfer and pressure relief. The results support parameter optimization of hydraulic fracturing and stability control for deep roadways under floor dynamic pressure. Full article

Waste tire disposal and high-ground-stress soft rock roadway instability are pressing global challenges. This study develops sustainable rubber granule concrete (RGC) using waste tire rubber as a key component, aiming to realize waste valorization and floor heave control. RGC’s mechanical properties (uniaxial/triaxial compression, compressibility, ductility) were systematically tested, and its pressure relief mechanism was validated via finite element analysis (ABAQUS/FLAC) and 60-day field monitoring. Results show that RGC with optimal parameters (12% rubber content, 3–4 GPa elastic modulus, 250–350 mm thickness) achieves 64% bottom stress reduction and >40% displacement control. The material’s excellent energy absorption and flexibility address the brittleness of conventional concrete, ensuring stable support in high-stress environments. This work provides a sustainable, cost-effective concrete modification strategy, bridging waste recycling and geotechnical engineering, with broad implications for low-intensity, high-toughness material applications. Aiming at the difficult problem of floor heave control in deep coal mine roadways, this paper took the 1224 transportation roadway of Shuguang Coal Mine in Shanxi as the engineering background and carried out the first underground industrial test of floor-slotting pressure relief technology by using special slotting equipment. The aim is to reveal the energy transfer law of the floor rock mass during slotting pressure relief and clarify its inherent connection with stress redistribution and floor heave deformation control. The research adopts a combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and field tests to systematically explore the energy accumulation characteristics of the floor and the induced mechanism of floor heave. Results show that the maximum energy accumulated in the floor after roadway excavation reaches 6.0 × 105 J, which is the fundamental cause of floor heave. After optimizing the slotting parameters (depth 2.5 m, width 0.2 m), numerical simulation indicates that the surrounding rock stress concentration zone migrates to the deep part, the energy peak shifts down by 2.5 m, the floor plastic zone expands, and the range of the high-energy zone shrinks. Field test results show that the floor heave amount decreases from 30 cm to 20 cm, with a reduction rate of 33%. This study reveals the synergistic mechanism of “energy transfer–stress regulation–deformation control”, verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of the slotting pressure relief technology in the floor heave control of deep, high-stress roadways, and provides a guarantee for the safe and efficient advancement of the working face. The principal difficulty in studying the physico-mechanical and filtration-capacity properties of coals and host rocks under laboratory conditions using core samples lies in reproducing natural thermodynamic conditions characteristic of in situ depths. To address this issue, specialized equipment and methodologies for transferring measurement results are employed, including the Hoek–Brown failure criterion, the structural weakening coefficient, and the development of thermodynamic models. The reliability and accuracy of such measurements are determined by the degree of conformity between the adopted laboratory conditions and natural in situ conditions, the number of samples representing different lithological varieties, and the adequacy of sampling procedures ensuring representativeness. Particular challenges arise when sampling cleated and fractured coals formed under natural stress–strain conditions and contain methane, which significantly influences their physical properties. These difficulties are especially pronounced in prepared-for-mining high-gas-content coal seams of the Karaganda Basin at depths of approximately 700 m, where obtaining representative samples is technically complicated. Reliable values of the physico-mechanical properties of the coal–rock mass are essential for geomechanical calculations aimed at ensuring safe mining of high-gas-content seams through risk assessment of geodynamic phenomena, particularly in zones of geological disturbances, floor heave, and roof collapse. In this context, the use of a comprehensive suite of geophysical logging data from exploration boreholes makes it possible to obtain continuous, high-precision information on physico-mechanical and filtration-capacity properties. These methods are particularly important for characterizing the coal–rock mass in operating mines, since the natural state of host rocks and prepared coal seams is altered due to stress relief caused by mine workings, preliminary degasification measures, and hydraulic fracturing. The problem addressed is the need for reliable assessment of rock and coal seam parameters under natural thermodynamic stress–strain conditions, taking into account lithological composition, structural heterogeneity, fracture development, stratigraphic differentiation, and gas saturation. The aim of this study is to ensure efficient and safe coal extraction based on geomechanical calculations utilizing physico-mechanical and filtration-capacity properties of host rocks and gas-bearing coal seams, whether prepared for mining or not yet extracted. The research methods are based on an integrated complex of geophysical logging of exploration wells, specialized software tools, and statistical processing techniques to identify patterns in physico-mechanical and filtration-capacity properties of host rocks and coal seams under natural stress–strain conditions, as well as to determine the nature of changes in these properties within coal seams and roof and floor rocks in prepared mining areas. The physico-mechanical and filtration-capacity properties of host rocks and coals from the Lenin and Kazakhstanskaya mines were determined. Regularities governing the application of these parameters to coals of different formations and depths were established; fracture orientations and characteristics were evaluated; and relationships between changes in coal seam parameters and gas content were identified. A comprehensive methodological framework for studying the physical and capacity properties of the coal–rock mass under natural thermodynamic conditions has been developed. Its primary application is the investigation of coal seams prepared for mining to support geomechanical calculations for efficient and safe coal extraction, the implementation of degasification measures for high-gas-content seams, and the assessment of gas-dynamic risks based on the character of variations in physical parameters. Severe floor heave in gate roadways under high-intensity longwall mining is primarily controlled by mining-induced stress redistribution. Abutment pressure is preferentially transferred through the coal pillar into the floor, accelerating floor instability. From the perspective of symmetry, mining disturbance breaks the original mechanical symmetry of the coal pillar–roadway system, resulting in asymmetric stress concentration and uneven floor heave. In this study, field monitoring and FLAC3D simulations were conducted for the 12 Upper 301 panel in the Buertai Coal Mine. The objectives were to quantify the sensitivity of coal-pillar loading and floor-heave response under stress redistribution, and to derive implications for pressure-relief design. Field monitoring indicates strong disturbance and large deformation: the maximum roof–floor and rib-to-rib convergences reached 1095 mm and 452 mm, respectively, accompanied by continuous growth of coal-pillar stress during mining. Numerical results show that increasing coal-pillar width enhances stress-bearing capacity and promotes a more symmetric stress distribution, thereby suppressing floor heave. In contrast, increasing the mining advance rate aggravates stress-field asymmetry and intensifies floor uplift. Greater burial depth further strengthens stress concentration and amplifies asymmetric deformation. Based on these findings, a roof-cutting pressure-relief scheme was optimized. This scheme aims to relieve and re-route the asymmetrically transmitted pillar loading. The optimal design adopts a roof-cutting length of 75 m and an angle of 30°, which reconstructs a more symmetric stress-transfer path; reduces the peak side abutment pressure to 8.72 MPa; and limits floor heave to 134.4 mm (control rate: 88.4%). Field application confirms the effectiveness of the proposed symmetry-based pressure-relief design. Full article

China’s roof-cutting and pressure relief gob-side entry retaining (RCPR-GER) technology provides an efficient non-pillar mining solution that significantly enhances coal recovery. This paper presents a systematic review of the technological progress in Chinese coal mines from 2011 to 2023, based on an analysis of 1038 publications from CNKI, EI, and Web of Science using VOS viewer and Origin software. Four main technical approaches are examined: gob-side entry retaining without roadside filling, with roadside filling, with roof-cutting and pressure relief, and hybrid methods. Five key roof-cutting techniques are evaluated: dense drilling, high-pressure water-jet slotting, hydraulic fracturing, blasting, presplitting, and roof water injection softening. Successful applications have been documented in coal seams with thicknesses of 1.6–6.15 m and burial depths of 92–1037 m, demonstrating wide adaptability. The roof-cutting short-beam theory underpins the mechanism, which reduces roadway deformation, shortens the cantilever beam length, and alters stress transfer paths. Compared to previous reviews on general gob-side entry retaining, this study offers a dedicated synthesis and comparative analysis of RCPR-GER technologies, establishing a selection framework grounded in geological compatibility and engineering practice. Future research should focus on adaptive parameter design for deep hard composite roofs, quantitative modeling of passive roof-cutting effects, optimization of cutting timing and orientation, and floor-heave control technologies to extend applications under complex geological conditions. To support intelligent and sustainable mine engineering, this geotechnics-based study integrates laboratory testing, three-dimensional numerical simulation, and field monitoring to optimize roadway support and improve resource efficiency. This study investigates the geotechnical behavior of the surrounding rock in coalmine roadways under single-face unloading conditions, aiming to provide theoretical and practical support for surrounding rock control in underground coal mining. Excavation of the roadway creates a free surface, leading to unloading, which makes timely support crucial for preventing instability. True-triaxial single-face unloading tests and mechanical tests on hole-containing coal specimens show that the coal exhibits four characteristic stages, namely fissure compaction (closure), elastic deformation, yielding, and residual strength. Under a confining stress of 4 MPa, the peak strength of Coal Seam No. 3 in the true-triaxial single-face unloading test reached 32.4 MPa, whereas the peak strength of the hole-containing coal specimen was only 17.1 MPa, and failure occurred as instantaneous global instability with an “X”-shaped conjugate shear pattern. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize the roadway’s surrounding rock control scheme, indicating that increasing the bolt length increases the proportion of the load carried by the rock bolts while reducing the load borne by the cable bolts. In addition, advance abutment pressure increases the forces in the support system and amplifies deformation of the solid rib, coal-pillar rib, and roof; roadway surface convergence is dominated by floor heave. During layered mining of extra-thick coal seams in deep rock-burst-prone mines, a thick bottom coal layer facilitates the accumulation of elastic strain energy in the floor strata. This stored energy may be released under mining-induced disturbances during retreat, thereby triggering rock-burst events. To mitigate floor energy accumulation at the lower-slice working face of extra-thick coal seams, previous studies have primarily adopted floor blasting for pressure relief. However, conventional blasting is often associated with poor energy utilization and limited controllability of the pressure-relief range, which hampers achieving the intended relief performance. Accordingly, this study proposes a shaped charge blasting scheme to reduce floor energy accumulation. ANSYS/LS-DYNA simulations and UDEC-based energy analyses, together with theoretical analysis and field validation, were conducted to clarify the mechanism of directional fracture propagation and the evolution of floor elastic energy before and after blasting. The results showed that the synergistic effects of the high-velocity jet and quasi-static pressure in shaped charge blasting generated a through-going fracture aligned with the maximum horizontal principal stress. This fracture effectively segmented the high-stress region in the floor and increased the maximum fracture length along the shaped charge direction to 10–13 times that achieved by conventional blasting. UDEC simulations and theoretical analysis indicated that the peak elastic energy in the floor was reduced by up to 54.08% after shaped charge blasting. Field measurements further showed that shaped charge blasting limited the maximum roadway floor heave to 300 mm and reduced floor deformation by 35–42% compared with the case without pressure relief. Overall, shaped charge blasting effectively blocks stress-transfer pathways and improves energy dissipation efficiency, providing theoretical support and a practical technical paradigm for safe and efficient mining of deep extra-thick coal seams. With the depletion of shallow coal resources, deep extra-thick coal seam mining has become vital for energy security, yet fully mechanized top-coal caving (FMTC) goaf-side roadways face severe challenges of excessive advanced deformation and intense strata behavior. To address this gap, this study took the 4301 tailgate of a coal mine in Shaanxi province as the engineering background, integrating field investigation, theoretical analysis, FLAC3D numerical simulation, and industrial tests. Guided by the key stratum theory, we systematically analyzed the influence of overlying key strata fracture on strata pressure. The results show three key strata: near-field secondary key strata (KS1, KS2) with “vertical O-X” fracturing and far-field main key stratum (MKS) with “horizontal O-X” fracturing. The radial extrusion force from MKS rotational blocks is the core cause of 200 m range advanced deformation. A collaborative control scheme of near-field key strata directional fracturing roof-cutting pressure relief and high-strength bolt-cable support was proposed. Industrial verification indicates roadway deformation was significantly reduced, with roof subsidence, floor heave, and rib convergence controlled within safe engineering limits. This study fills the gap of insufficient research on far-field key strata’s impact, providing a reliable technical solution for similar extra-thick coal seam FMTC goaf-side roadway surrounding rock control. Maintaining the stability of the mine roadway is of paramount importance, as it is critical in ensuring the daily operational continuity, personnel safety, long-term economic viability, and sustainability of the entire mining operation. Significant instability can trigger serious disruptions—such as production stoppages, equipment damage, and severe safety incidents—which ultimately compromise the project’s financial returns and future prospects. Therefore, the proactive assessment and rigorous control of roadway stability constitute a foundational element of successful and sustainable resource extraction. In China, thick and extra-thick coal seams constitute over 44% of the total recoverable coal reserves. Consequently, their safe and efficient extraction is considered vital in guaranteeing energy security and enhancing the efficiency of resource utilization. The surrounding rock of gob-side roadways in typical coal seams is often fractured due to high ground stress, intensive mining disturbances, and overhanging goaf roofs. Consequently, asymmetric failure patterns such as bolt failure, steel belt tearing, anchor cable fracture, and shoulder corner convergence are common in these entries, which pose a serious threat to mine safety and sustainable mining operations. This deformation and failure process is associated with several parameters, including the coal seam thickness, mining technology, and surrounding rock properties, and can lead to engineering hazards such as roof subsidence, rib spalling, and floor heave. This study proposes countermeasures against asymmetric deformation affecting gob-side entries under intensive mining pressure during the fully mechanized caving of extra-thick coal seams. This research selects the 8110 working face of a representative coal mine as the case study. Through integrated field investigation and engineering analysis, the principal factors governing entry stability are identified, and effective control strategies are subsequently proposed. An elastic foundation beam model is developed, and the corresponding deflection differential equation is formulated. The deflection and stress distributions of the immediate roof beam are thereby determined. A systematic analysis of the asymmetric deformation mechanism and its principal influencing factors is conducted using the control variable method. A support approach employing a mechanical constant-resistance single prop (MCRSP) has been developed and validated through practical application. The findings demonstrate that the frequently observed asymmetric deformation in gob-side entries is primarily induced by the combined effect of the working face’s front abutment pressure and the lateral pressure originating from the neighboring goaf area. It is found that parameters including the immediate roof thickness, roadway span, and its peak stress have a significant influence on entry convergence. Under both primary and secondary mining conditions, the maximum subsidence shows an inverse relationship with the immediate roof thickness, while exhibiting a positive correlation with both the roadway span and the peak stress. Based on the theoretical analysis, an advanced support scheme, which centers on the application of an MCRSP, is designed. Field monitoring data confirm that the peak roof subsidence and two-side closure are successfully limited to 663 mm and 428 mm, respectively. This support method leads to a notable reduction in roof separation and surrounding rock deformation, thereby establishing a theoretical and technical foundation for the green and safe mining of deep extra-thick coal seams. In response to ground pressure problems such as an abnormal increase in working face support resistance and severe roadway floor heave induced by the lateral composite structure of the multi-layer thick and hard roof in the 11,223 working face of Xiaojihan Coal Mine, based on the triangle area slip theory, this study reveals that the lateral triangle area forms a composite structure of “cantilever beam + masonry beam”. The stress transfer and unloading mechanism of the high- and low-position thick and hard rock stratum fracturing was clarified. A technical scheme is proposed and implemented to weaken the high- and low-position thick and hard rock strata through horizontal Long Directional Borehole synergistic fracturing and optimize stress transfer. The results show that (1) the lateral overlying rock forms a triangular slip area under the clamping of the cantilever and masonry beam structures. This composite structure is the main reason for the increase in the support resistance at the end of the working face and the stress concentration of the roadway surrounding rock. (2) The influence law that the load of the triangular slip area is mainly influenced by the length of the broken block, and the breaking angle was clarified. The distribution characteristics of the load in the lateral triangle area under the fracturing of thick and hard rock strata at different horizons are mastered. When the length of the key block is reduced by 40%, the supporting force F1 of the rock mass below the broken block on it is reduced by 62.5%, and the supporting force F2 and the frictional force F3 of the end part on the broken area of the triangle area are reduced by 34.6%. (3) The fracturing of high- and low-position thick and hard rock strata can collaboratively weaken the stress accumulation at high and low positions. Fracturing the low-position thick and hard rock strata can cut off the low-position “cantilever beam” structure, and fracturing the high-position thick and hard rock strata at the same time can transfer the load of the “masonry beam”. Through simulation, it is seen that the stress peaks at the end of the working face and the roadway surrounding rock during synergistic fracturing are, respectively, reduced by 12.2% and 28.9%. (4) An industrial test of directional drilling hydraulic fracturing of lateral thick and hard rock strata is carried out, achieving the regulation effect that the average value of the support resistance at the end of the cycle is reduced from 27.2 MPa to 22.7 MPa, and the floor heave amount of the reused roadway is reduced by 62.3%. The research results can provide a reference for the advanced treatment of the strong ground pressure area of the multi-layer thick and hard roof. Full article

To address the challenge of simulating shear failure in anchor bolts within FLAC3D, a shear failure criterion, Fs(i)Fsmax(i), is proposed based on the PILE structural element. Through secondary development using the FISH programming language, a modified mechanical model of the PILE element is established and integrated into the FLAC3D-FISH framework. Comparative analyses are conducted on shear tests of bolt shafts and on anchor bolt support performance under coal–rock interface slip conditions, using both the original PILE model and the modified mechanical model. The results demonstrate that the shear load–displacement curve of the modified PILE model clearly reflects shear failure characteristics, satisfying a quantitative shear failure criterion. Upon failure, both the shear force and axial force of the structural element at the failure point drop abruptly to zero, enabling effective simulation of shear failure in anchor bolts within the FLAC3D environment. Using the modified model, the distribution of principal stress differences in the surrounding rock after roadway excavation is analyzed. Based on this, the concept of a stress-bearing ring in the surrounding rock is introduced. The reinforcing effects of bolt length, spacing, and ultimate load capacity on the stress-bearing ring in weak and fractured surrounding rock are investigated. The findings reveal that: (1) shear failure initiates in bolt shafts near the coal–rock interfaces, occurring earlier near the coal–floor interface than near the coal–roof interface; (2) the stress-bearing ring in weak and fractured surrounding rock shows a discontinuous and uneven distribution. However, with support improvements—such as increasing bolt length, reducing spacing, and enhancing failure load—the surrounding rock gradually forms a continuous stress-bearing ring with more uniform thickness and stress distribution, migrating inward toward the roadway surface. Close-distance coal seam mining in Danhou coal mine has caused serious deformation in the underlying soft rock roadways. The mechanism of this type of deformation is explored through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, and corresponding control measures are proposed. Firstly, the mechanical model of abutment stress transfer along the underlying rock stratum is established, and the analytical solution of abutment stress at any point of the underlying rock stratum is derived. Secondly, the impact of upper working face mining on the underlying soft rock roadway is investigated through numerical simulation. Subsequently, the stress distribution characteristics of the surrounding rock of the rectangular roadway and straight- wall arch roadway are compared and analyzed. Finally, a support scheme for the underlying soft rock roadway is presented and implemented in engineering practice. Field engineering application results demonstrate that, after the combined support of high-strength bolts and grouting, the average deformation on both sides of the roadway is reduced by 63.4%, and the average floor heave is decreased by 93%. This indicates that the technology effectively controls the deformation of the surrounding rock in soft rock roadways during close-distance coal seam mining. Full article

Under deep, high-intensity mining conditions, a high mineral pressure develops at the working face, which can easily cause floor heave deformation of the roadway. In this paper, with the geological conditions of Buertai coal mine as the background, through on-site monitoring and numerical simulation, the mechanism of strong dynamic pressure roadway floor heave is clarified and a cooperative control method for roadway floor heave deformation is proposed. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The overall strength of the floor of this strong dynamic pressure roadway is low, which can easily cause roadway floor heave, and on-site multivariate monitoring of the mine pressure is carried out, which clarifies the evolution law of the mine pressure of the mining roadway and along-the-airway roadway. (2) Combined with FLAC3D numerical simulation software, we analyze the influence of coal seam depth and floor lithology on the stability of the roadway floor and find that both have a significant influence on the stability of the roadway. Under the condition of high-intensity mining, the floor will deteriorate gradually, forming a wide range of floor heave areas. (3) Based on the deformation and damage mechanism of the roadway floor, a synergistic control method of “roof cutting and pressure relief + floor anchor injection” is proposed and various technical parameters are designed. An optimized design scheme is designed for the control of floor heave in Buertai coal mine. Full article

To elucidate evolutionary characteristics of the surrounding rock failure mechanism in a double-roadway layout, this work is grounded on in the research context of the Jinjitan Coal Mine, focusing on the deformation and failure mechanisms of double roadways. This paper addresses the issue of resource wastage resulting from the excessive dimensions of coal pillars in prior periods by employing a research methodology that integrates theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and field monitoring to systematically examine the movement characteristics of overlying rock in the working face. On that basis, the size of coal pillar is optimized. The advance’s stress transfer law and deformation distribution characteristics of the return air roadway and transport roadway are studied. The cause of the asymmetric deformation of roadway retention is explained. A differentiated design is conducted on the support parameters of double-roadway bolts and cables under strong dynamic pressure conditions. The study indicates that a 16 m coal pillar results in an 8 m elastic zone at its center, balancing stability with optimal resource extraction. In the basic top-sloping double-block conjugate masonry beam structure, the differing stress levels between the top working face’s transport roadway and the lower working face’s return air roadway are primarily due to the varied placements of key blocks. In the return air roadway, floor heave deformation is managed using locking anchor rods, while roof subsidence is controlled with a constant group of large deformation anchor cables. The displacement of surrounding rock increases under the influence of both leading and lagging pressures from the previous working face, although the change is minimal. There is a significant correlation between roadway deformation and support parameters and coal pillar size. With a 16 m coal pillar, differential support of the double roadway lowers the return air roadway deformation by 30%, which improves the mining rate and effectively controls the deformation of the roadway.
