The metaverse is a multidimensional reality space that represents the evolving interface between humans, digital systems, and spatial computing. This research aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of metaverse definitions and architectural frameworks through the analysis of academic literature. A systematic literature review of 103 peer-reviewed studies was conducted, from which 33 explicit definitions and 25 architectural models were selected for detailed analysis. A mixed-methods qualitative approach was employed, combining a systematic literature analysis, word frequency analysis, and a thematic analysis to develop an expanded conceptual and architectural understanding. The analysis of 33 definitions revealed eight recurring conceptual themes, which were synthesised into five overarching categories: conceptual and linguistic constructs, spatial-environmental design, technological orientation, economic and governance systems, and social and human interaction. A total of 25 studies proposing architectural models are categorised into three thematic groups: technology-based, domain-based and layered architectures. A significant contribution of this study is the categorisation and comparative evaluation of foundational architectural models, specifically the extensively referenced three-, four-, and five-layer frameworks. The findings are structured around two primary areas of focus: the conceptual definition and the comparative analysis of established metaverse architecture models, focusing on a set of well-established models that exhibit conceptual clarity, structural coherence, and widespread acceptance in the literature. This integrated methodological approach not only offers a dual-perspective analysis that bridges conceptualisation and system design but also introduces an analytical framework that supports future standardisation and governance discussions. The convergence of blockchain and metaverse technologies is poised to redefine how Global Value Chains (GVCs) create, capture, and distribute value, yet scholarly insight into their joint impact remains scattered. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to clarify where, how, and under what conditions blockchain-enabled transparency and metaverse-enabled immersion enhance GVC performance. A systematic literature review (SLR), conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, screened 300 articles from ABI Global, Business Source Premier, and Web of Science records, yielding 65 peer-reviewed articles for in-depth analysis. The corpus was coded thematically and mapped against three theoretical lenses: transaction cost theory, resource-based view, and network/ecosystem perspectives. Key findings reveal the following: 1. digital twins anchored in immersive platforms reduce planning cycles by up to 30% and enable real-time, cross-border supply chain reconfiguration; 2. tokenized assets, micro-transactions, and decentralized finance (DeFi) are spawning new revenue models but simultaneously shift tax triggers and compliance burdens; 3. cross-chain protocols are critical for scalable trust, yet regulatory fragmentation—exemplified by divergent EU, U.S., and APAC rules—creates non-trivial coordination costs; and 4. traditional IB theories require extension to account for digital-capability orchestration, emerging cost centers (licensing, reserve backing, data audits), and metaverse-driven network effects. Based on these insights, this study recommends that managers adopt phased licensing and geo-aware tax engines, embed region-specific compliance flags in smart-contract metadata, and pilot digital-twin initiatives in sandbox-friendly jurisdictions. Policymakers are urged to accelerate work on interoperability and reporting standards to prevent systemic bottlenecks. Finally, researchers should pursue multi-case and longitudinal studies measuring the financial and ESG outcomes of integrated blockchain–metaverse deployments. By synthesizing disparate streams and articulating a forward agenda, this review provides a conceptual bridge for international business scholarship and a practical roadmap for firms navigating the next wave of digital GVC transformation. The “metaverse city” is defined as an immersive, interactive, and experiential digital environment that replicates or reinvents elements of physical cities, inserting them into an alternative reality. This concept involves transposing the urban, social, and cultural aspects of real cities into the metaverse, thus creating new ways of interacting with and experiencing urban space. Thus, it is not necessarily a digital replica of a physical city; however, it is invariably distinguished by its immersive nature, offering users a sensory and interactive experience. This concept goes beyond the mere digital replication of a city, evolving into a multifaceted space that integrates urban, social, cultural, and technological elements. It is shaped by digital interactions mediated by social actors (users), whose relationships in the metaverse are influenced by the power dynamics occurring in the virtual environment, much like in physical cities. The metaverse city is not merely an extension of the physical city; rather, it is a digital construct that enables alternative ways of living and relating to urban space. Consequently, it is a dynamic and ever-evolving construct, contingent on the active engagement of multiple social actors and their interactions for its consolidation. without the strategic involvement of diverse social actors, the identity and practices that characterize this contemporary urban entity—made possible by emerging technologies—risk losing their viability. As the concept of the Metaverse evolves, virtual reality (VR) plays a pivotal role in creating immersive, socially interactive environments that form the backbone of this interconnected digital universe. However, VR technology often faces significant challenges, including hardware limitations, platform incompatibilities, and difficulties supporting seamless multiplayer experiences. VR streaming offers a potential solution by offloading computational tasks to remote servers, enabling high-quality VR experiences on lower-end devices and enhancing accessibility to a broader audience. In this paper, we present Loka, a versatile and extensible VR streaming framework designed to address these challenges, providing the necessary infrastructure to support social interactions and real-time collaboration in virtual environments—the key components of the Metaverse. Loka is built on Unity Engine and WebRTC, enabling seamless cross-platform VR experiences without the need for device-specific SDKs. It also supports real-time integration of custom sensory data streams, such as motion capture and physiological signals from IoT devices, which can enhance user interaction and personalization in virtual environments, as well as provide a more convenient accessible platform for research. Furthermore, Loka’s native multiplayer and multicasting capabilities facilitate collaborative and interactive social experiences, aligning with the core goals of the Metaverse. By leveraging cloud-based rendering with low-latency streaming, Loka allows users to engage in immersive VR environments on a wide range of devices, without requiring high-end hardware. Its modular architecture ensures extensibility, allowing researchers and developers to integrate new data types and experimental setups more easily. With its ability to set up immersive VR scenes to support social interaction and handle complex virtual environments, we believe the proposed work can be leveraged to foster the development and research of the Metaverse. The “Metaverse Territorial Brand” integrates core and interconnected elements into a virtual, interactional, experiential, and immersive space known as the metaverse. This type of brand encompasses the connection with immersive territories that may or may not be digital twins of real territories. It also encompasses two interconnected physical scales: the territorial and the regional, involved in another type of emerging territorial scale, known as the metaversal scale. Therefore, the “Metaverse Territorial Brand” is a digital-immersive extension of the territorial brand of physical territories, encompassing specific geographical and cultural aspects, but directed to the metaverse environment. This brand is a symbolic digital construction, but also a multifaceted one that incorporates discursive and visual elements, articulated by the social actors of the immersive territory, aiming to create a specific and distinct identity for a space in the metaverse. When talking about social actors in the metaverse (users), we highlight that this set of actors may or may not be the same as the physical territory. It is also important to highlight that both the territorial brand directed to physical territories and the “Metaverse Territorial Brand” are formed from the power relations of a given set of social actors. Therefore, without the strategic intention of a plurality of social actors that stimulate these relationships, there is no type of territorial brand involved. Full article

The metaverse, which amalgamates physical and virtual realms for diverse social activities, has been the focus of extensive application development by organizations, research institutes, and companies. However, these applications are often isolated, employing distinct authentication methods across platforms. Achieving interoperable authentication is crucial for when avatars traverse different metaverses to mitigate security concerns like impersonation, mutual authentication, replay, and server spoofing. To address these issues, we propose a blockchain-enabled secure and interoperable authentication scheme. This mechanism uniquely identifies users in the physical world as well as avatars, facilitating seamless navigation across verses. Our proposal is substantiated through informal security analyses, employing automated verification of internet security protocols and applications (AVISPA), the real-or-random (ROR) model, and Burrows–Abadi–Needham (BAN) logic and showcasing effectiveness against a broad spectrum of security threats. Comparative assessments against similar schemes demonstrate our solution’s superiority in terms of communication costs, computation costs, and security features. Consequently, our blockchain-enabled, interoperable, and secure authentication scheme stands as a robust solution for ensuring security in metaverse environments. Full article

Cross-chain transaction technologies have greatly promoted the scalability of cryptocurrencies, which then facilitates the development of Metaverse applications. However, existing solutions rely heavily on centralized middleware (notary) or smart contracts. These schemes lack privacy considerations, and users’ cross-chain transactions are easy to master by other parties. Some signature-based payment schemes have good privacy but do not support multi-party cross-chain protocols or rely heavily on some time assumptions. The uncertainty of user behavior makes it difficult to design a secure multi-party cross-chain protocol. To solve these problems, we investigate how to design a secure multi-party cross-chain transaction protocol with offline tolerance. We propose a new signature algorithm called the pre-adaptor signature scheme, an extension of the adaptor signature scheme. The pre-adaptor signature scheme combines the multi-signature and adaptor signature schemes, which can realize the secret transmission channel between multiple parties. To provide offline tolerance, we encode our protocol into the P2SH script. Our protocol provides better privacy due to no dependence on smart contracts. The performance evaluation was conducted with ten participants. For each participant of our cross-chain protocol, the initialization and execution process can be performed in 3 milliseconds and with 6 k bytes of communication overhead at most. The cost increases linearly with the increase in the number of participants. Full article

Various software environments have been developed in the past to create digital twins of single cells or a digital twin of a factory. Each environment has its own strengths and weaknesses and has been designed with a specific focus. The environments that are able to holistically simulate complete factories are limited in terms of the modelling details required for the analysis of single manufacturing cells (e.g., manufacturer-independence of the individual digital twins) and their ability for virtual commissioning. This paper presents three options for realising a virtual commissioning of linked cells using a 3D integration platform with NVIDIA Omniverse, consisting of two different digital models fused into a combined model, also representing material flow. First, with a source/sink solution and unidirectional connector controlled by OPC UA; secondly, with a bidirectional connector, developed in the course of this elaboration, and an extension of the 3D integration platform controlled by Apache Kafka; thirdly, with a bidirectional connector and using only an extension of the 3D integration platform. The research demonstrates that virtually commissioning multiple linked digital twins from different manufacturers in a 3D platform with material flow makes a significant contribution to the industrial metaverse. In the rapidly emerging era of untact (“contact-free”) technologies, the requirement for three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments utilized in virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR) and the metaverse has seen significant growth, owing to their extensive application across various domains. Current research focuses on the automatic transfer of the style of rendering images within a 3D virtual environment using artificial intelligence, which aims to minimize human intervention. However, the prevalent studies on rendering-based 3D environment-style transfers have certain inherent limitations. First, the training of a style transfer network dedicated to 3D virtual environments demands considerable style image data. These data must align with viewpoints that closely resemble those of the virtual environment. Second, there was noticeable inconsistency within the 3D structures. Predominant studies often neglect 3D scene geometry information instead of relying solely on 2D input image features. Finally, style adaptation fails to accommodate the unique characteristics inherent in each object. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach: a neural rendering-based 3D scene-style conversion technique. This methodology employs semantic nearest-neighbor feature matching, thereby facilitating the transfer of style within a 3D scene while considering the distinctive characteristics of each object, even when employing a single style image. The neural radiance field enables the network to comprehend the geometric information of a 3D scene in relation to its viewpoint. Subsequently, it transfers style features by employing the unique features of a single style image via semantic nearest-neighbor feature matching. In an empirical context, our proposed semantic 3D scene style transfer method was applied to 3D scene style transfers for both interior and exterior environments. This application utilizes the replica, 3DFront, and Tanks and Temples datasets for testing. The results illustrate that the proposed methodology surpasses existing style transfer techniques in terms of maintaining 3D viewpoint consistency, style uniformity, and semantic coherence.
