In recent years, the rapid development of the agricultural product e-commerce and logistics industry has generated a large amount of express packaging waste. The way in which to promote the reuse of express packaging and reduce carbon emissions has become an important issue, and the current research on consumers’ willingness to express packaging recycling is still in its infancy. This study, based on the theory of Extended Planned Behavior, constructed a factor model observing the influence of consumers’ willingness to participate in the e-commerce of agricultural products’ recyclable packaging recovery. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling to process and analyze 659 questionnaire data, the results show that policy promotion and perceived benefits had the highest degree of positive influence on recycling willingness, and there was a relatively weak positive effect of packaging performance and subjective norm on consumers’ willingness to recycle in terms of packaging performance and the subject norm of recycling willingness. The attitude towards recycling had the smallest impact on the willingness to recycle. Therefore, in order to promote the production and use of recyclable packaging, government policies should be strengthened, and consumers’ perceived benefits and subjective norm should be improved, as well as the packaging performance of recyclable packaging. This study provides new insights into Chinese consumers’ participation in the recycling and promotion of recyclable packaging for e-commerce agricultural products. Full article

Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is a synthetic plastic known for its excellent physicochemical properties and a wide range of applications in packaging, coatings, foaming, and agriculture. In medicine, its versatility allows it to function as a scaffold for drug delivery, sutures, implants, tissue engineering, and 3D printing. In addition to its biocompatibility, PCL’s most notable characteristic is its biodegradability. However, this property is affected by temperature, microbial activity, and environmental conditions, which means PCL can sometimes remain in nature for long periods. This review shows that various types of microorganisms can efficiently degrade PCL, including different strains of Pseudomonas spp., Streptomyces spp., Alcaligenes faecalis, and fungi like Aspergillus oryzae, Fusarium spp., Rhizopus delemar, and Thermomyces lanuginosus. These microorganisms produce enzymes such as lipases, esterases, and cutinases that break down PCL into smaller molecules that act as substrates. The review also examines the phylogenetic diversity of organisms capable of biodegrading PCL, the biochemical pathways involved in this process, and specific aspects of the genetic framework responsible for the expression of the enzymes that facilitate degradation. Targeted research on microbial PCL biodegradation and its practical applications could significantly aid in reducing and managing plastic waste on a global ecological scale. Full article

Scale management has become an essential form of modern agricultural production. However, it is still unclear how farm size influences farmers’ pesticide packaging waste recycling behavior (FPPWRB). Based on the data from the China Rural Revitalization Survey 2020, this study quantitatively explores the impact of farm size on FPPWRB. This study found that (1) the ratio for FPPWRB is low, with only about 41.7% of the sample farmers expressing participation in recycling. (2) The empirical results show that for every 1% increase in farm size, the probability of FPPWRB increases by 3.59%. (3) Farmers in urban suburbs or younger farmers are more inclined to FPPWRB. (4) Farm size can improve FPPWRB by enhancing farmers’ environmental cognition levels. The research in this study provides insights into the improper disposal of pesticide packaging waste and offers references for formulating policies related to the resource utilization of pesticide packaging waste. Thus, the findings of this study can help provide a reference for the introduction of policies to manage pesticide packaging waste, which, in turn, can help promote sustainable agricultural development. Pullulan is a high-value polysaccharide produced through the fermentation of Aureobasidium pullulans. It has significant applications in the fields of food, medicine, environmental science, and packaging. However, the yield, molecular weight, and other characteristics of pullulan can vary depending on the fermentation substrate used. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the underlying causes of these variations at the molecular level. In this study, we first investigated the morphological differences in A. pullulans YQ65 when cultured in YPD and PDA media. The results indicated that different culture media significantly influence the primary cell morphology of A. pullulans YQ65, which in turn affects the synthesis of secondary metabolites. Subsequently, we employed different culture media to ferment pullulan and examined the variations in pullulan yield, molecular weight, and biomass. Moreover, FTIR and thermodynamic stability tests were conducted to analyze the differences among pullulans across different culture media. Finally, transcriptome analysis revealed that A. pullulans YQ65, when cultured in YPD and PDA media, regulates its growth and metabolism through the expression of key genes that are involved in pathways such as the proteasome, oxidative phosphorylation, metabolism of various secondary metabolites, fatty acid anabolism, carbon metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. The transcriptome results were further validated by assessing the expression of specific genes. This study enhances the understanding of the fermentation differences observed with different substrates in A. pullulans and provides valuable insights for optimizing culture substrates. Additionally, it offers guidance for utilizing agricultural and forestry processing waste, as well as food processing by-products, to produce pullulan cost-effectively in the future. Full article

The global concern about the use of disposable plastics has fed the research on sustainable packaging for food products. Among the virtuous materials, chitosan emerges as a valid alternative to conventional polyethylene films because of its abundance in nature. In this work, a novel film for food wrapping was developed by exploiting shellfish waste according to a vision of circular economy. Compared to previous studies, here, novel ingredients, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), fibroin, and essential oils, were used in a synergistic combination to functionally postpone cheese deterioration. The fermentative procedure applied for the obtainment of chitin contributes to filling the existing gap in the literature, since the majority of studies are based on the chemical pathways that dramatically impact the environment. After pretreatment, the shrimp shell waste (SSW) was fermented through two bacterial strains, namely Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis. A deacetylation step in an alkaline environment transformed chitin into chitosan, yielding 78.88 g/kg SWW. Four different film formulations were prepared, all containing chitosan with other ingredients added in order of decreasing complexity from the A to D groups. The novel films were tested with regard to their physico-mechanical and antioxidant properties, including the tensile strength (12.10–23.25 MPa), the elongation at break (27.91–46.12%), the hardness (52–71 Shore A), the film thickness (308–309 μm), and the radical scavenging activity (16.11–76.56%). The performance as a cling film was tested on two groups of cheese samples: the control (CTR), wrapped in conventional polyethylene (PE) film; treated (TRT), wrapped in the chitofilm formulation deemed best for its mechanical properties. The volatiles entrapped into the headspace were investigated by means of the SPME-GC technique. The results varied across soft, Camembert, and semi-hard cheeses, indicating a growing abundance of volatiles during the conservation of cheese. The bacterial growth trends for mesophilic, enterobacteriaceae, and lactic acid bacteria were expressed as the mean colony forming units (CFU)/mL for each type of cheese at different sampling times (day 2, day 8, and day 22): the highest load was quantified as 8.2 × 106 CFU/mL at day 22 in the CTR Camembert cheese. The TRT samples generally exhibited inhibitory activity comparable to or lower than that observed in the CTR samples. The sensory analysis revealed distinctions in cheese taste between the TRT and CTR groups. Full article

The use of express packaging and its recycling produces large amounts of carbon dioxide. In order to achieve China’s “dual carbon” goal, this study adopted a literature research method to explore the idea of intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets. Based on the current design and use of intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets, new ideas for their improvement are proposed. This study also explored methods for improving people’s willingness to use intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets through experimental research and quantitative analysis. The results show that a reward mechanism has a significant effect on people’s willingness to use intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets. Of the two types of rewards, immediate rewards, compared to delayed rewards, can further increase people’s use of intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets. Gain and loss trade-offs play a mediating role between a reward mechanism and people’s willingness to use it, and consumers make that choice after weighing up the advantages and disadvantages. If consumers feel that it is worthwhile to protect the environment, in terms of the rewards they obtain compared to the time and effort they have to spend using intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets, and that the gain outweighs the loss, they will be inclined to use this system. Environmental responsibility plays a moderating role in mediating the trade-off between gains and losses. In the context of low environmental responsibility, cash rewards lead to greater gain and loss trade-offs compared to point rewards, while in the context of high environmental responsibility, there is no difference between cash rewards and point rewards. This study provides ideas for the design and promotion of the use of intelligent express packaging recycling cabinets, with the goal of effectively improving the recycling rate of express packaging waste. Leasing has proven to be a business model that is perfectly suited to the circular economy. It significantly contributes to sustainable development by enabling the reuse of machinery and equipment after each lease period and by including preventive maintenance and overhauls within and between lease terms. This helps to extend the life cycle of equipment, promote value recovery, and reduce waste. This paper examines an imperfect preventive maintenance (PM) strategy applied to equipment rented under the terms of “free leasing”. In free leasing, the lessor makes the equipment available to the customer for a specified period of time without charging rent. In return, the customer is required to purchase the equipment’s consumables exclusively from the lessor. The lessor is also responsible for the maintenance of the equipment at the customer’s premises. The greater the quantity of consumables used by the customer, the more the equipment will deteriorate. Consequently, the lessor must be able to determine the most effective approach to preventive maintenance, ensuring that it aligns with the customer’s planned usage rate while maximizing profit. This work proposes a PM strategy to be adopted by the lessor during the free lease period. This strategy involves the performance of imperfect PM actions just before the start of the lease period and then periodically. Different packages of preventive actions can be applied each time, with each package having a different cost depending on the level of effectiveness in terms of rejuvenating the equipment. Minimal repairs are performed in the event of equipment failure. The decision variables are the PM period to be adopted and the maintenance efficiency level to be chosen for each preventive intervention. The objective is to determine, for a given customer with an estimated consumption rate profile of consumables, the optimal values of these decision variables so that the lessor maximizes their profit. A mathematical model is developed to express the lessor’s average profit over each lease period. A solution procedure is developed for small instances of the problem, and an Artificial Bee Colony algorithm is implemented for larger instances. A numerical example and a sensitivity analysis are presented. Full article

The pollution from waste plastic express packages (WPEPs), especially microplastic (MP) fragments, caused by the blowout development of the express delivery industry has attracted widespread attention. On account of the variety of additives, strong complexity, and high diversity of plastic express packages (PEPs), the multi-class classification of WPEPs is a typical large-class-number classification (LCNC). The traceability and identification of microplastic fragments from WPEPs is very challenging. An effective chemometric method for large-class-number classification would be very beneficial for the comprehensive treatment of WPEP pollution through the recycling and reuse of waste plastic express packages, including microplastic fragments and plastic debris. Rather than using the traditional one-against-one (OAO) and one-against-all (OAA) dichotomies, an exhaustive and parallel half-against-half (EPHAH) decomposition, which overcomes the defects of the OAO’s classifier learning limitations and the OAA’s data proportion imbalance, is proposed for feature selection. EPHAH analysis, combined with partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) for large-class-number classification, was performed on 750 microplastic fragments of polyethylene WPEPs from 10 major courier companies using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. After the removal of abnormal samples through robust principal component analysis (RPCA), the root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) value for the model was reduced to 0.01, which was 21.5% lower than that including the abnormal samples. The best models of PLS-DA were obtained using SNV combined with SG-17 smoothing and 2D (SNV+SG-17+2D); the latent variables (LVs), the error rates of Monte Carlo cross-validation (ERMCCVs), and the final classification accuracies were 6.35, 0.155, and 88.67% for OAO-PLSDA; 5.37, 0.103, and 87.33% for OAA-PLSDA; and 3.12, 0.054, and 96.00% for EPHAH-PLSDA. The results showed that the EPHAH strategy can completely learn the complex LCNC decision boundaries for 10 classes, effectively break the tie problem, and greatly improve the voting resolution, thereby demonstrating significant superiority to both the OAO and OAA strategies in terms of classification accuracy. Meanwhile, PLS-DA further maximized the covariance and data interpretation abilities between the potential variables and categories of microplastic debris, thereby establishing an ideal performance identification model with a recognition rate of 96.00%. The environmental, economic, and energy problems of the modern world motivate the development of alternative fuel technologies. Multifuel technology can help reduce the carbon footprint and waste from the raw materials sector as well as slow down the depletion of energy resources. However, there are limitations to the active use of multifuel mixtures in real power plants and engines because they are difficult to spray in combustion chambers and require secondary atomization. Droplet micro-explosion seems the most promising secondary atomization technology in terms of its integral characteristics. This review paper outlines the most interesting approaches to modeling micro-explosions using in-house computer codes and commercial software packages. A physical model of a droplet micro-explosion based on experimental data was analyzed to highlight the schemes and mathematical expressions describing the critical conditions of parent droplet atomization. Approaches are presented that can predict the number, sizes, velocities, and trajectories of emerging child droplets. We also list the empirical data necessary for developing advanced fragmentation models. Finally, we outline the main growth areas for micro-explosion models catering for the needs of spray technology. Full article

The increasing number of disposable packaging boxes has caused a huge waste of resources and environmental problems. In order to promote the effective use of sustainable express packaging, this study builds a reverse network of recyclable express packaging boxes for e-commerce businesses with self-established logistics. Considering the uncertainties of demand, return rate, retention rate and recovery rate, a stochastic programming model is proposed to determine the location of collection points and recovery centers in the supply chain network, as well as the flow of recycling boxes, with the objective of minimizing the total cost. Furthermore, an improved priority-based tabu search algorithm is proposed to solve the model. The feasibility and operability of the model are verified via a benchmark function experiment and numerical experiment. This study provides important support for the sustainable development of the express delivery industry and helps to protect the environment. Full article

The rapid development of e-commerce has brought about a sharp increase in the demand for express packaging materials, which in turn has led to problems such as resource waste and environmental pollution. Under the target of “dual carbon”, the urgency and importance of effective classification and recycling of express packaging waste cannot be ignored. Based on the unified theory of technology acceptance and use (UTAUT) model and the characteristics of express packaging, this study selected performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and perceived value as core variables, and gender, age and frequency as moderating variables, and established a structural equation through survey and analysis to study the factors influencing consumers’ willingness to recycle express packaging. The results of the study showed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and perceived value had a significant positive effect on consumers’ willingness to classify. Classification willingness had a significant positive effect on consumers’ classification behavior. In addition to directly influencing classification intention, performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence also have mediating effects. In addition, gender played a moderating role in the effects of performance expectancy and social influence on classification intention. Based on the findings, this study proposes targeted measures to promote the green and healthy development of the express delivery industry. Full article

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a yet incurable rare genetic disease that affects the skeletal and cardiac muscles, leading to progressive muscle wasting and premature death. DMD is caused by the lack of dystrophin, a muscle protein essential for the biochemical support and integrity of muscle fibers. Gene replacement strategies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) employing the adeno-associated virus (AAV) face the challenge imposed by the limited packaging capacity of AAV, only allowing the accommodation of a short version of dystrophin (µDys) that is still far removed from correcting human disease. The need to develop strategies leading to the expression of a best performing dystrophin variant led to only few studies reporting on the use of dual vectors, but none reported on a method to assess in vivo transgene reconstitution efficiency, the degree of which directly affects the use of safe AAV dosing. We report here on the generation of a dual AAV vector approach for the expression of a larger dystrophin version (quasidystrophin) based on homologous recombination, and the development of a methodology employing a strategic droplet digital PCR design, to determine the recombination efficiency as well as the occurrence of unwanted concatemerization events or aberrant expression from the single vectors. We demonstrated that, upon systemic delivery in the dystrophic D2.B10-Dmdmdx/J (DBA2mdx) mice, our dual AAV approach led to high transgene reconstitution efficiency and negligible Inverted Terminal Repeats (ITR)-dependent concatemerization, with consequent remarkable protein restoration in muscles and improvement of muscle pathology. This evidence supports the suitability of our system for gene therapy application and the potential of this methodology to assess and improve the feasibility for therapeutic translation of multiple vector approaches. Trade-Off Analyses of Food Loss and Waste Reduction and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Food Supply Chains

Food losses and waste (FLW) reduction and mitigating climate impact in food chains are priorities in achieving sustainable development goals. However, many FLW-reducing interventions induce additional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, for example, from energy, fuel, or packaging. The net effect of such interventions (expressed in GHG emissions per unit of food available for consumption) is not obvious, as is illustrated in a number of case studies. We recommend that in the decision to take on FLW-reducing interventions, the trade-offs on sustainability impacts (such as GHG emissions) are taken into consideration. Since FLW induce demand and extra operations in all stages along a supply chain, adequate representation of cumulative GHG emissions along the production and supply chain, including ‘hidden parts’ of the chain, is required, which is challenging in full LCA studies. As a workaround, the case studies in this paper are based on a generic tool, the Agro-Chain greenhouse gas Emission (ACE) calculator that includes metrics and data for common food product categories and supply chain typologies. The calculator represents the structure of a generic (fresh food) supply chain and offers data sets for, amongst others, crop GHG emission factors and FLW in different stages of the production and distribution chain. Through scenario calculations with different chain parameters (describing pre and post-intervention scenarios), the net effects of an intervention on GHG emissions and FLW per unit of food sold to the consumer can be compared with little effort. In the case studies, interventions at the production stage as well as in post-harvest operations, are analyzed. Results show that post-harvest activities (especially FLW) contribute substantially to the carbon footprint of supplied food products. The FLW-reducing interventions are considered to induce additional GHG emissions. In most case studies, FLW-reducing interventions lower total GHG associated with a unit of food supplied to a client or consumer. However, in one case study, the extra emissions due to the intervention were higher than the prevented emission from lowering food losses. Consequently, in the latter case, the intervention is not an effective GHG emission reduction intervention. Full article

Optimal Design of Reverse Logistics Recycling Network for Express Packaging Considering Carbon Emissions

With the development of China’s express delivery industry, the number of express packaging has proliferated, leading to many problems such as environmental pollution and resource waste. In this paper, the process of reverse logistics network design for express packaging recycling is given as an example in the M region, and a four-level network containing primary recycling nodes, recycling centers, processing centers, and terminals is established. A candidate node selection model based on the K-means algorithm is constructed to cluster by distance from 535 courier outlets to select 15 candidate nodes of recycling centers and processing centers. A node selection model based on the NSGA-II algorithm is constructed to identify recycling centers and processing centers from 15 candidate nodes with minimizing total cost and carbon emission as the objective function, and a set of Pareto solution sets containing 43 solutions is obtained. According to the distribution of the solution set, the 43 solutions are classified into I, II, and III categories. The results indicate that the solutions corresponding to Class I and Class II solutions can be selected when the recycling system gives priority to cost, Class II and Class III solutions can be selected when the recycling system gives priority to environmental benefits, and Class III solutions can be selected when the society-wide recycling system has developed to a certain extent. In addition, this paper also randomly selects a sample solution from each of the three types of solution sets, conducts coding interpretation for site selection, vehicle selection, and treatment technology selection, and gives an example design scheme. With the strong development of e-commerce driving the growth of the express delivery industry, the levels of consumption of packaging materials and the pollution of the environment are becoming increasingly severe, which means that coordinated measures need to be taken by the government, enterprises, and the market. To regulate the consumption of packaging materials and control environmental pollution, in this paper, we analyze the current situation regarding packaging pollution in online commodities sales, the urgency of control, the causes of the excessive consumption of packaging materials, and pollution based on the externality theory and combined with the actual situation. Based on international experience, we put forward innovative suggestions regarding system governance in terms of the definition of property rights, financial subsidies, tax incentives, the optimization of the logistics and transportation system, improvements in community waste classification, and other aspects.
