Dear Colleagues,

In the era of advanced technology and economic development, global society is continuously facing the challenge of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The use of nonrenewable energy sources for household, industrial, and agricultural sectors has escalated pollution emissions. The production systems of developing countries are mainly dependent on the use of traditional energies. For instance, at the domestic level, the use of firewood, charcoal, and animal dung is common. The industrial sector largely uses inefficient energy technology, which not only causes the wasteful use of resources, but also contributes to GHG emissions and the destruction of human health. Similarly, agriculture, directly and indirectly, contributes to more than 10% of global environmental emissions, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, farm mechanization, and the application of synthetic agrochemicals. This Special Issue (SI) focuses on determining the contribution of household, industrial, and agricultural sectors to pollution emissions. Moreover, it aims to find plausible solutions in terms of the adoption of management practices and energy-efficient technologies to decouple the dependency of production systems on nonrenewable energy sources for pollution abatement. In developing countries, limited studies have focused on adopting smart management strategies and energy-efficient technologies for cleaner production. To solve the stated problem, this Special Issue aspires to collect novel studies covering a broad range of topics.

The industrial transfer of heavy industries such as non-metallic mineral manufacturing, metal smelting and manufacturing from the eastern coast of China to the central region is beneficial to the economic development of the central region on the one hand, but increases carbon emissions in the central region on the other hand. In February 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the “14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River”. This indicates that the urban agglomeration of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is an important region for implementing green development in the central area. The spatial and temporal evolution of carbon emissions and influencing factors in this region are the foundation for achieving carbon peaking and the carbon neutrality goal. This paper calculates the total carbon emissions of the cities in the urban agglomeration of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and uses models such as spatial autocorrelation, geographically weighted regression, and Geodetector to explore the spatial–temporal pattern of carbon emissions. The results show the following: (1) The total carbon emissions of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration showed fluctuations during 2010–2020, and the carbon emission reduction effect is unstable. Additionally, the carbon emissions of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River city cluster show obvious spatial variability, but the high carbon emission area is always concentrated in Wuhan, and this remains unchanged. (2) In 2010, 2014 and 2017, population size was the most important factor affecting carbon emission divergence, and in terms of interaction, the interaction between energy intensity and GDP and urbanization is the reason for the increasing carbon emissions. (3) The influence of population size on carbon emissions decreases from north to south, the influence of energy intensity on carbon emissions shows a spread from the most influential region in the northwest to the centre and then to the northeast, and the GDP per capita has little influence on the difference of carbon emissions spatial distribution. We explore the effects of orange oil adjuvant (a kind of spray adjuvant) on the physicochemical properties of acetamiprid (pesticide) when foliage-applied to the surface of pittosporum tobira leaves. The leaf surface was characterized by the OCG (Van Oss–Chaudhury–Good) method, and the relationship between the wetting behavior of various pesticide droplets, including the change in surface free energy (SFE), adhesion force, and adhesion work, is explored to offer insight into the control of the pittosporum tobira psyllid, Edentatipsylla shanghaiensis Li et Chen. Results showed that SFE values for the adaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces were 40.13 mJ/m2 and 37.06 mJ/m2, respectively, while acetamiprid liquids had SFE values of 67.43 mJ/m2 and 63.26 mJ/m2. SFE values of the acetamiprid liquids are greater than that of the leaf surface, and the droplets on the leaves with a smaller adhesion force and lager adhesion work exhibited moderate-to-poor wettability estimated by contact angles. When the concentration of the orange oil adjuvant was between 0.10% and 1.00% above CMC (critical micellar concentration, 0.09%), the SFE values of the acetamiprid liquids were less than that of the leaf surface. The adhesion tension was greatly increased, and the adhesion work decreased by 14.46–28.13%. Meanwhile, droplets on the leaves exhibited good wettability. Field experiments showed that the synergistic effect of acetamiprid against E. shanghaiensis was significantly improved after spraying with orange oil adjuvant at the concentrations 0.10% and 1.0% above CMC. This study demonstrated the use of an orange oil adjuvant with a concentration above CMC to improve the synergistic effect of the insecticide directly through improved leaf wetting, which can provide reference for reducing pesticide dosage and increasing efficiency during the chemical control of pests. The build-up of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is causing warmness in the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in climate change. The transport sector is one of the active causes of GHG emissions and it is imperative to use sustainable transport sources to control climate change. There is a measure that aims to encourage citizens to stop using their own vehicles as their choice of transport and instead opt for joint sustainable mobility during traveling. In this study, a quantitative research method was used and data were collected from a sample of 410 respondents through a questionnaire. Furthermore, this study also took a simulation-based (n = 10,000) sample size of electric rail vehicle data. The data were analyzed using structural equation modelling. The results revealed that sustainable transportation, climate change technologies, and electric rail vehicles reduce climate change in the ecoregions of China. We conclude that sustainable transportation policies could be formulated and implemented to reduce climate change. In response to the research results, it is recommended that, since climate change is a multi-level governance issue, the outdated pyramidal transport industry models must be shifted to a sustainable transportation system model. Feature creep captures the phenomenon that additional features result in product complexity and even decrease the usability of products. According to consumers’ heterogeneous tastes for products’ sophisticated features, we divide them into the low-end segment and the high-end segment. The proportions of the two segments are uninformed as to the manufacturer, but known to the platform. We take into account feature creep, and consider a supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and a platform. The manufacturer decides whether to adopt customization strategy, and the platform decides whether to share its private information. By formulating several sequential game models, we explore both firms’ optimal strategies and then examine the impacts of customization production and information sharing on environmental performance. Our findings reveal that adopting customization strategy can drive the manufacturer to improve its innovation efforts and raise the wholesale price. Additionally, if the low-end consumers’ proportion exceeds the manufacturer’s expectations, this improvement can be enhanced when the platform shares its private information, and vice versa. Furthermore, if the cost that the manufacturer takes to embed various functions in the product is quite small, it is environmentally friendly for the manufacturer to adopt customization strategy. While, if the cost is relatively large, taking customization strategy causes even greater negative effects on the environment. In addition to generating higher profits for both parties, the platform sharing its private information also contributes to lowering the environmental performance in certain conditions. Full article

The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of intellectual property rights (IPR) on green technological innovation in China. The study utilizes a mixed-method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative methods, to provide empirical evidence on the subject matter. According to the findings, IPR protection may have a favorable impact on the green technological innovation (GTI) of firms. According to mechanism testing, the channels by which IPR protection influences businesses’ GTI are research and development (R&D) input and foreign investment entry, whereas the human capital and finance capability of firms can favorably moderate the link between IPR protection and GTI. According to heterogeneity tests, private firms, exporting firms, and firms in industries with a high degree of monopoly are more notable for their promotional effect of IPR protection on the GTI of firms. Traditional energy consumption raises greenhouse gas emissions, which is a major concern in China. Agricultural energy consumption accounts for one third of China’s greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, current patterns of energy consumption on farms are both unsustainable and inadequate since rural communities in emerging nations have limited access to energy sources. This study explores the factors affecting the adoption of renewable energy on farms and examines the effect of such adoption on technical efficiency. The data were collected from 801 farmers selected through a multistage random and purposive sampling method in a face-to-face survey in China. Logistic regression, data envelopment analysis and propensity score matching were used to analyze the data. The descriptive statistics depicted that renewable energy technology was adopted by more than 25% of the total farmers. The logistic regression results depicted that education, farm size, government financial support, perceptions of renewable energy (usefulness, cost effectiveness, environmental friendliness and information availability) and farmer entrepreneurial orientation dimensions (risk-taking, innovativeness and pro-activeness) all significantly affected the adoption of renewable energy technology on farms. Farmers who perceived renewable energy as more useful and cost-effective than conventional energy technology were 1.89 and 2.13 times more likely to adopt it on their farms, respectively. Farmers who perceived renewable energy as more environmentally friendly than traditional energy technology were 1.54 times more likely to use it on their farms. The findings also showed that innovative farmers were 2.24 times more likely to adopt renewable energy technology on their farms. The propensity score matching results showed that the technical efficiency of adopters of renewable energy was 10% higher than that of nonadopters. The study suggests that agriculture must be transformed to fulfill the existing and forthcoming demand for food and energy in an impartial and ecologically sustainable manner. Full article

Enhancing agricultural water use efficiency can support Shaanxi Province’s transition to a sustainable agricultural economy. Using the data envelopment approach (DEA), we evaluated the water use efficiency in agriculture of various cities in the Shaanxi Province of China. Moran’s I and Dagum Gini coefficients were used to reveal spatial and temporal characteristics of agricultural water use efficiency. Furthermore, the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model was used to investigate the effects of the agricultural economy, level of water-saving irrigation, cropping structure, environmental factors, and water supply structure on agricultural water use efficiency. The findings demonstrate that the average agricultural water use efficiency from 2011 to 2020 is low (0.796) in Shaanxi Province. Spatially there is considerable variation in water use efficiency between cities, with some highly efficient and some with very low efficiency. There is a strong negative spatial correlation between cities, with high efficiency cities tending to be adjacent to low efficiency cities. Moreover, the spatial differences in agricultural water use efficiency have increased over time, with the most significant increase within the northern region and between the north and central areas. Each influencing factor has a different impact from year to year and from city to city. Overall, the level of water-saving, the level of agricultural economics, the structure of the water supply, and environmental factors primarily have a negative influence. In contrast, the planting structure primarily has a favorable function. Therefore, to support the coordinated growth of agricultural water use efficiency, Shaanxi Province should improve its city-to-city cooperation and exchange of water use technology and experience, as well as develop differentiated water use measures appropriately for the development of each city according to local conditions. Based on the provincial panel data of China from 2004 to 2020, this paper uses the empirical model of mediating effect to theoretically analyze and empirically test the mechanism of environmental regulation affecting pollution emissions, and the mediating effect of manufacturing technology’s progress. The study of this paper found that the improvement of pollution treatment technology is not the only technical means to reduce the level of pollution emissions. The progress of manufacturing production technology has a crucial role in promoting the reduction of pollution emissions. The high-quality development of the manufacturing industry and the improvement of the production technology level means that pollution emissions can be effectively reduced from the source. At the same time, although environmental regulation can have a significant positive impact on reducing pollution emissions, the progress of manufacturing production technology is a crucial intermediary variable for environmental regulation to promote pollution reduction. The above research conclusions have passed the influence mechanism test of this paper. Through the heterogeneity test, this study also found that in the stage of higher manufacturing development scale and technology level, manufacturing technology progress’ intermediary role as an environmental regulation affecting pollution emissions, is more apparent, and the role of environmental regulation in promoting pollution reduction is more prominent. The degree of effect increases with the improvement of the production technology level of the manufacturing industry. After the robustness test, the research conclusion of this paper is still valid. According to the conclusions of the research, this paper puts forward policy suggestions that should be oriented to promote the upgrade of manufacturing technology, introduce environmental regulation policies, support manufacturing enterprises to increase the innovative application of energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies, and vigorously develop and expand high-tech manufacturing. In recent years, the international environment has changed rapidly, and the uncertainty of the trade environment faced by enterprises has dramatically increased. As a major participant in world trade, the uncertainty of the trade environment has significantly impacted the daily business activities and various behaviors of Chinese manufacturing enterprises. Green technology innovation has also become an important tool for enterprises to enhance their sustainable development ability and improve their ability to cope with changes in the external environment. The change in the trade environment will affect the business development of enterprises. To face the change in the trade environment, enterprises often choose to improve their technology level and increase the added value of their products. In the context of sustainable development, green technology innovation has higher technical strength and is more in line with the requirements of international development, which is strong support for enterprises to cope with the change in the trade environment. However, the current literature is scant on the association between trade uncertainty and green innovation. In this context, this study used the data of Chinese manufacturing listed companies from 2011 to 2020 to empirically analyze the relationship between trade environment uncertainty (UTE) and green technology innovation (GTI) using panel data estimation methods and further explore the related heterogeneity and its impact on sustainable development. The results show that: (1) UTE has a significant positive impact on the GTI of enterprises, and the robustness test verifies these findings. Different kinds of UTE have different effects on enterprise GTI. UTE also has a positive impact on the independent GTI of enterprises. (2) Compared with non-state-owned enterprises, the GTI of state-owned enterprises is more vulnerable to the positive impact of UTE. (3) UTE significantly and negatively impacts enterprises’ business activities and further challenges enterprises’ sustainable development. However, the enterprise’s GTI behavior, especially the substantial GTI, helps mitigate the adverse impact of UTE on the company’s sustainable development. Finally, this paper provides targeted suggestions for enterprises to better cope with UTE and improve their sustainable development capabilities. Full article

The reduction of fertilizer inputs can be considered as an effective policy tool for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 12 and for reaching carbon neutrality. In this study, we examine the impact of the extension of cassava (Manihot sculenta) soil conservation and efficiency (SCE) technology on the cost of chemical fertilizers used by China’s cassava industry. The SCE technology was developed by a Technology Integration and Demonstration (TID) Project of China’s National Key R&D Program, which is an innovative and official channel of agriculture technology extension. Based on data collected from cassava farmers in Guiping, Guangxi, China, the differences-in-differences with propensity score matching (PSM-DID) approach was conducted in this study. We found that farmers participating in the cassava SCE technology project reported a reduction in fertilizer costs per mu (15 mu = 1 ha) of approximately 24.0%. Consequently, the results demonstrate that the government can increase the number of TID projects in order to reduce chemical fertilizer inputs and to encourage the sustainable development of agriculture. Recycling pesticide packaging wastes (PPWs) is important for promoting green development in agriculture and improving the rural ecological environment. However, limited studies have focused on the subsidy, reward, and punishment policies for the recycling of pesticide packaging wastes. Therefore, to fill the research gap, the main aim of this study was to analyze farmers’ preferences for different PPW recycling policies using a choice experiment method. Furthermore, the study identified farmers’ heterogeneous preferences to provide a decision-making base for the governments to formulate PPWs recycling policies. We used a random parameter logit and latent class model to approach study objectives. A well-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 256 vegetable growers from the Hebei province of China. The results found that more than 80% of farmers used less than 30 g (mL) of pesticides, and more than 60% of farmers deeply buried the PPWs. In the study area, farmers preferred subsidy incentive policies and found it hard to accept the higher capacity specifications of pesticide packaging and punitive measures. Moreover, it is confirmed that farmers’ preferences for PPW recycling policies are heterogeneous, and 55.5% of farmers preferred incentive-type policies. Therefore, the government should establish a proper PPW recycling system with a subsidy-based incentive policy. Moreover, local agricultural officers should provide training to the farmers for recycling PPWs. Full article

With the strong development of e-commerce driving the growth of the express delivery industry, the levels of consumption of packaging materials and the pollution of the environment are becoming increasingly severe, which means that coordinated measures need to be taken by the government, enterprises, and the market. To regulate the consumption of packaging materials and control environmental pollution, in this paper, we analyze the current situation regarding packaging pollution in online commodities sales, the urgency of control, the causes of the excessive consumption of packaging materials, and pollution based on the externality theory and combined with the actual situation. Based on international experience, we put forward innovative suggestions regarding system governance in terms of the definition of property rights, financial subsidies, tax incentives, the optimization of the logistics and transportation system, improvements in community waste classification, and other aspects.
