Clinical and animal studies suggest that multiple brain systems are involved in mediating reward-motivated and related emotional behavior including the consumption of commonly used drugs and palatable food, and there is evidence that the repeated ingestion of or exposure to these rewarding substances may in turn stimulate these brain systems to produce an overconsumption of these substances along with co-occurring emotional disturbances. To understand this positive feedback loop, this review focuses on a specific population of hypothalamic peptide neurons expressing melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), which are positively related to dopamine reward and project to forebrain areas that mediate this behavior. It also examines neurons expressing the peptide hypocretin/orexin (HCRT) that are anatomically and functionally linked to MCH neurons and the molecular systems within these peptide neurons that stimulate their development and ultimately affect behavior. This report first describes evidence in animals that exposure in adults and during adolescence to rewarding substances, such as the drugs alcohol, nicotine and cocaine and palatable fat-rich food, stimulates the expression of MCH as well as HCRT and their intracellular molecular systems. It also increases reward-seeking and emotional behavior, leading to excess consumption and abuse of these substances and neurological conditions, completing this positive feedback loop. Next, this review focuses on the model involving embryonic exposure to these rewarding substances. In addition to revealing a similar positive feedback circuit, this model greatly advances our understanding of the diverse changes that occur in these neuropeptide/molecular systems in the embryo and how they relate, perhaps causally, to the disturbances in behavior early in life that predict a later increased risk of developing substance use disorders. Studies using this model demonstrate in animals that embryonic exposure to these rewarding substances, in addition to stimulating the expression of peptide neurons, increases the intracellular molecular systems in neuroprogenitor cells that promote their development. It also alters the morphology, migration, location and neurochemical profile of the peptide neurons and causes them to develop aberrant neuronal projections to forebrain structures. Moreover, it produces disturbances in behavior at a young age, which are sex-dependent and occur in females more than in males, that can be directly linked to the neuropeptide/molecular changes in the embryo and predict the development of behavioral disorders later in life. These results supporting the close relationship between the brain and behavior are consistent with clinical studies, showing females to be more vulnerable than males to developing substance use disorders with co-occurring emotional conditions and female offspring to respond more adversely than male offspring to prenatal exposure to rewarding substances. It is concluded that the continued consumption of or exposure to rewarding substances at any stage of life can, through such peptide brain systems, significantly increase an individual’s vulnerability to developing neurological disorders such as substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, or cognitive impairments. The quality of life (QoL) perception has been studied in neurological diseases; however, there is limited information linking brain morphological characteristics, QoL, and cognition. Human behavior and perception are associated with specific brain areas that interact through diffuse electrochemical networking. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the brain region volume (BRV) correlation with the scores of Rand’s 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and cognitive domains (memory and dementia status). We analyzed data from 420 adult participants in the Maracaibo Aging Study (MAS). Principal component analysis with oblimin axis rotation was used to gather redundant information from brain parcels and SF-36 domains. Canonical correlation was used to analyze the relationships between SF-36 domains and BRV (adjusted for intracranial cavity), as well as sex, age, education, obesity, and hypertension. The average age (±SD) of subjects was 56 ± 11.5 years; 71% were female; 39% were obese; 12% had diabetes, 52% hypertension, and 7% dementia. No sex-related differences were found in memory and orientation scores, but women had lower QoL scores. The 1st and 2nd canonical correlation roots support the association of SF-36 domains (except social functioning and role emotional) and total brain volume, frontal lobe volume, frontal pole, lateral orbital lobe, cerebellar, and entorhinal areas. Other variables, including age, dementia, memory score, and systolic blood pressure, had a significant influence. The results of this study demonstrate significant correlations between BRV and SF-36 components, adjusted for covariates. The frontal lobe and insula were associated with the mental health component; the lateral-orbital frontal lobe and entorhinal area were correlated with the physical component. Full article

Addressing climate change requires not only knowledge but also psychological resilience. This study examined whether integrating Mental Mode Management (MMM) self-regulation training with climate education improves pro-environmental outcomes and emotional responses to climate change. In a randomised 2 × 2 design, 44 participants were assigned to either a control group (CG; n = 21), which received a six-week climate education programme, or an experimental group (MMM; n = 23), which received the same education plus MMM training. Pro-environmental attitudes, behaviours, carbon emissions, climate change anxiety, mindfulness, and executive functions were assessed at baseline and post-intervention. A follow-up was also conducted six months later. Both groups showed increased pro-environmental attitudes post-intervention (η2 = 0.3) and reduced food-related emissions (η2 = 0.107). No changes were observed in pro-environmental behaviour scores or global carbon footprint. While neither intervention affected overall climate anxiety or cognitive impairment, functional impairment increased in the CG and decreased in the MMM group (η2 = 0.177), with mindfulness facet acting with awareness moderating this effect. These findings contribute to sustainability research by showing that integrating climate education with psychological training enhances environmental awareness and fosters emotionally resilient engagement with climate challenges, supporting individual-level contributions to broader sustainability goals. This study explores key factors influencing Aging-in-Place Attachment (AiPA) among older adults in Macau’s high-density community spaces, emphasizing interactions between the built environment, behavior, and psychology. A multidimensional framework evaluates environmental, behavioral, human-factor, and psychological contributions. A mixed-methods, multisource approach was employed. This study measured spatial characteristics of nine public spaces, conducted systematic behavioral observations, and collected questionnaire data on place attachment and aging intentions. Eye-tracking and galvanic skin response (GSR) captured visual attention and emotional arousal. Hierarchical regression analysis tested the explanatory power of each variable group, supplemented by semi-structured interviews for qualitative depth. The results showed that the physical environment had a limited direct impact but served as a critical foundation. Behavioral variables increased explanatory power (~15%), emphasizing community engagement. Human-factor data added ~4%, indicating that sensory and habitual interactions strengthen bonds. Psychological factors contributed most (~59%), confirming AiPA as a multidimensional construct shaped primarily by emotional and social connections, supported by physical and behavioral contexts. In Macau’s dense urban context, older adults’ desire to age in place is mainly driven by emotional connection and social participation, with spatial design serving as an enabler. Effective age-friendly strategies must extend beyond infrastructure upgrades to cultivate belonging and interaction. This study advances environmental gerontology and architecture theory by explaining the mechanisms of attachment in later life. Future work should explore how physical spaces foster psychological well-being and examine emerging factors such as digital and intergenerational engagement. Full article

Emotion recognition by wearable devices is essential for advancing emotion-aware human–computer interaction in real life. Earphones have the potential to naturally capture brain activity and its lateralization, which is associated with emotion. In this study, we newly introduced tympanic membrane temperature (TMT), previously used as an index of lateralized brain activation, for earphone-based emotion recognition. We developed custom earphones to measure bilateral TMT and conducted two experiments consisting of emotion induction by autobiographical recall and scenario imagination. Using features derived from the right–left TMT difference, we trained classifiers for both four-class discrete emotion and valence (positive vs. negative) classification tasks. The classifiers achieved 36.2% and 42.5% accuracy for four-class classification and 72.5% and 68.8% accuracy for binary classification, respectively, in the two experiments, confirmed by leave-one-participant-out cross-validation. Notably, consistent improvement in accuracy was specific to models utilizing right–left TMT and not observed in models utilizing the right–left wrist skin temperature. These findings suggest that lateralization in TMT provides unique information about emotional state, making it valuable for emotion recognition. With the ease of measurement by earphones, TMT has significant potential for real-world application of emotion recognition. Full article

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition characterised by emotional instability, impulsivity, interpersonal dysfunction, and self-injurious behaviours. Despite growing clinical interest, the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying these symptoms are still not fully understood. This review aims to summarise findings from neuroimaging, psychophysiological, and neurodevelopmental studies in order to clarify the neurobiological and physiological basis of BPD, with a particular focus on emotional dysregulation and implications for the treatment of adolescents. Methods: A narrative review was conducted, integrating results from longitudinal neurodevelopmental studies, functional and structural neuroimaging research (e.g. FMRI and PET), and psychophysiological assessments (e.g., heart rate variability and cortisol reactivity). Studies were selected based on their contribution to understanding the neural correlates of BPD symptom dimensions, particularly emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, interpersonal dysfunction, and self-harm. Results: Findings suggest that early reductions in amygdala volume, as early as age 13 predict later BPD symptoms. Hyperactivity of the amygdala, combined with hypoactivity in the prefrontal cortex, underlies deficits in emotion regulation. Orbitofrontal abnormalities correlate with impulsivity, while disruptions in the default mode network and oxytocin signaling are related to interpersonal dysfunction. Self-injurious behaviour appears to serve a neuropsychological function in regulating emotional pain and trauma-related arousal. This is linked to disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and structural brain alterations. The Unified Protocol for Adolescents (UP-A) was more effective to Mentalization-Based Therapy for Adolescents (MBT-A) at reducing emotional dysregulation compared, though challenges in treating identity disturbance and relational difficulties remain. Discussion: The reviewed evidence suggests that BPD has its in early neurodevelopmental vulnerability and is sustained by maladaptive neurophysiological processes. Emotional dysregulation emerges as a central transdiagnostic mechanism. Self-harm may serve as a strategy for regulating emotions in response to trauma-related neural dysregulation. These findings advocate for the integration of neuroscience into psychotherapeutic practice, including the application of neuromodulation techniques and psychophysiological monitoring. Conclusions: A comprehensive understanding of BPD requires a neuropsychologically informed framework. Personalised treatment approaches combining pharmacotherapy, brain-based interventions, and developmentally adapted psychotherapies—particularly DBT, psychodynamic therapy, and trauma-informed care—are essential. Future research should prioritise interdisciplinary, longitudinal studies to further bridge the gap between neurobiological findings and clinical innovation. Full article

Focusing on the legend of Phaedra and Hippolytus as developed in Euripides and Seneca and especially in Racine’s Phèdre and taking into account as well its further development in works by Camillo Boito, Luchino Visconti, and Yukio Mishima, I make the following arguments: (1) Contrary to many theologians and philosophers of love, a pathological form of love that issues in murder and suicide should not be regarded as unworthy of serious attention. Racine’s tragedy provides a catharsis for universal experiences of unrequited love and jealousy, a major human phenomenon. (2) Contrary to Paul Valéry, Phèdre’s love cannot be called merely animal, since the analytical insight she develops into her morbid passion carries tremendous moral force and lies at the origin of the European psychological novel, as launched by Madame de La Fayette a year later. (3) Contrary to François Mauriac, even if she is a heroine of desire or concupiscence rather than of “true love” (in contrast to the relatively innocent affections of Hippolyte and Aricie), the incredible beauty of her language resists such an easy categorization. (4) Study of concrete presentations of “love” in literature confirms that the meaning and use of this word is marked by an irreducible pluralism. Philosophical and theological analysis of love has to come to terms with this. (5) The role of a work of art, in crystallizing archetypical emotions and situations in a way that carries authority, is to provide the middle ground between the abstractions of philosophy on the one hand and the uncontrollable diversity of the empirical on the other. Even psychologies or sociologies of love, which claim to be close to the concrete data, need to be anchored in and corrected by the special concrete vision that only great literature can bring. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in early childhood may increase the risk of emotional behavioral problems (EBPs); however, few studies have explored the longitudinal effect of ACEs in early childhood on later EBPs and their underlying mechanisms. This study examined the serial mediating role of psychological resilience (PR) and problematic media use (PMU) in the relationship between ACEs in early childhood and EBPs. Participants included 534 three-year-old children (mean age of 33.29 years, SD = 3.97) and their parents from Wuhu, China. The parents completed online questionnaires measuring children’s ACEs, PR, and demographic information in September 2022 (Time 1), children’s PMU in September 2023 (Time 2), and EBPs in September 2024 (Time 3). Macro Process 6 was used to test the serial mediating effects of PR and PMU. A total of 5000 bootstrap samples were used to estimate the 95% confidence intervals. The results revealed that ACEs in early childhood did not directly predict EPBs. PR (b = 0.132 (95% CI [0.051, 0.221])) mediated the relationship between ACEs and children’s EBPs. PR and PMU also played a serial mediating role in the association of ACEs and children’s EBPs (b = 0.026, 95% CI [0.008, 0.054]). Our findings highlight the importance of improving PR and addressing PMU when designing interventions targeting Chinese preschoolers exposed to ACEs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Emotional interactions between mothers and children are essential for later developmental outcomes such as children’s health, social competence, and language skills. However, an observational assessment of such interactions cannot reveal how mothers perceive their relationships with their children. Therefore, in this study, we translated and validated the Japanese version of the Emotional Availability Self-Report (EA-SR-J) and examined its factor structure, reliability, and validity. Methods: The participants were 739 Japanese mothers with children aged from 1 month to 5 years and 11 months. Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed 19 items and four factors (Affect Quality, Hostility, Mutual Attunement, and Child Involvement with Parent) for the EA-SR-J. However, Intrusiveness was removed, and some items were assigned to different factors compared with the original scale. Cronbach’s alpha of each subscale ranged from 0.81 to 0.88, indicating sufficient internal consistency. The convergent validity of the scale was confirmed with expected correlations with variables related to attachment and child-rearing style. Discriminant validity was confirmed by group differences in variables related to children’s autism spectrum disorder symptoms and mothers’ depression symptoms. Conclusions: Although the EA-SR-J contains fewer items than the original scale, with the Intrusiveness item removed, it remains a reliable and valid tool. Further studies using the Emotional Availability Scale based on observation are needed in the future. Full article

Background: Spiritual care is vital for the holistic well-being of hospitalized cancer patients, addressing their emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs. This study addresses gaps in the relevant literature by evaluating spiritual perspectives among Peruvian oncology patients, offering culturally grounded insights that can inform nursing practice and healthcare management. The main objective of this research was to measure the overall level of Spiritual Perspective among hospitalized oncology patients using the Spiritual Perspective Scale (SPS) developed by Pamela Reed in 1987, which reflects early aspects of spirituality later integrated into her broader Spiritual Perspective theory. Materials and methods: This study aimed to evaluate the perceived levels of Spiritual Perspective among oncology patients in a hospital setting. Adopting a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design, data were gathered from 137 patients at a national hospital in Lima, Peru. Results: The majority of participants were older adults, with a high school education, and predominantly single. Findings revealed that most patients experienced moderate levels of Spiritual Perspective, spiritual practices, and beliefs. Patients commonly practiced prayer, meditation, and spiritual reading. Beliefs centered on a higher power and forgiveness. Essential support networks also provided emotional aid, complementing spiritual care. Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of spiritual care in nursing for oncology patients. Findings advance understanding of spirituality in illness and support interventions to improve patient outcomes. Full article

Although the influence of individual differences on decision-making under risk has been widely examined, there is no clear consensus yet as to how to explain this process considering both young and older adults. Methods: A total of 40 subjects (20 young adults and 20 older adults) participated in the present study. The young adults were aged 18–35 years (M = 23.25, SD = 2.59). The older adults were aged 65–70 years (M = 68.50, SD = 4.01). Participants completed the Risk Propensity Scale, the Sensation-Seeking Scale, the Test of Self-Conscious Affect, and the Prisoner’s Dilemma Game. Results: The results indicated that the groups showed different behaviors in sensation-seeking (p < 0.001, pη2 = 0.14). The older group showed a larger propensity to seek recreational activities and unconventional behaviors than the younger group (p < 0.0001, d = 0.78; p = 0.001, d = 0.75). Also, the older adults demonstrated a greater inclination toward pride (p < 0.01, d = 0.78), whereas younger adults exhibited a stronger tendency towards shame (p < 0.01, d = 0.76). Conclusions: These data suggest a shift in risk preferences as individuals age, potentially influenced by a variety of psychological, social, and experiential factors. The applications of this study can support psychological well-being, productivity, and quality of life in later adulthood. Full article

Masticatory Muscle Pain and Associated Complaints—An Analysis of the Frequency and Coexistence of Symptoms Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background/Objectives: Chronic stress has an undeniable effect in generating emotional disorders and physiological changes. It results in excessive muscle tension throughout the body, also in the masticatory system. A situation of chronic stress was the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this paper was to assess the prevalence of specific masticatory pain symptoms, their severity, and the co-occurrence of associated symptoms (otological symptoms and headaches) in patients diagnosed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 202 patients were divided into two groups: Group A (mean age of 36.46; F = 64; and M = 37) and B (mean age of 26.04; F = 70; and M = 31) included patients who presented for the study before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. The Oral Behaviours Checklist (OBC) questionnaire was used: patients with result ≥2 scores in the OBC were evaluated by DC/TMD. To evaluate the intensity of pain in masticatory structures, the elements of the RDC-TMD questionnaire were used. Otologic symptoms and headaches were assessed as coexisted complaints. Results: A significant increase in pain occurrence was observed in Group B mainly for masseter muscles (p < 0.0001), temporalis (p = 0.0044), and medial pterygoid muscles (p = 0.0153). A significantly more frequent reporting of pain/tenderness was observed among men in most of the evaluated muscles. For the lateral pterygoid muscles, changes in palpation pain did not reach statistical significance. There was a statistically significant difference in the intensity of pain in the temporomandibular joint area between both the entire groups A and B (p = 0.000152), as well as between women in Group A and B (p = 0.006453) and men in the study groups (p = 0.007990). An increase in the incidence of headaches was observed among men in Group B (Group A with 40.6% vs. Group B with 67.3%). The most commonly reported otological symptom in both groups was ear pain and/or discomfort in the preauricular region, with the frequency of otological symptoms being higher in Group B. Conclusions: (1) The COVID-19 pandemic affected the incidence and severity of masticatory muscle pain and associated complaints. (2) A decrease in the age of patients reporting complaints of masticatory mm pain was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. (3) An increase in the frequency of headaches was observed in the male group during the pan-demic, while in women there was an increase in palpation tenderness of masticatory muscles. Full article

Background/Objectives: Early care and education programs promote children’s social–emotional development, predicting later school success. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened an existing youth mental health crisis and increased teacher stress. Therefore, we applied an infant and early childhood mental health consultation model, Jump Start Plus COVID Support (JS+CS), aiming to decrease behavioral problems in children post-pandemic. Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial compared JS+CS to an active control, Healthy Caregivers–Healthy Children (HC2), at 30 ECE centers in low-income areas in South Florida. Participants were not blinded to group assignment. Teachers reported on children’s social–emotional development at baseline and post-intervention using the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. We assessed whether teacher stress, classroom practices, and self-efficacy mediated the relationship between JS+CS and child outcomes. We also explored whether baseline behavior problems moderated JS+CS effects on child protective factors, relative to HC2. Results: Direct group-by-time differences between JS+CS and HC2 were limited. However, JS+CS demonstrated significant within-group improvements in teacher-reported child protective factors, behavior support practices, and classroom safety practices. Classroom safety practices consistently mediated positive changes in child behaviors, including the DECA total protective factor score and subdomains of initiative and self-regulation. Additionally, teacher perceptions of behavior support mediated gains in child attachment. Conclusions: JS+CS shows promise in building protective systems around children through intentional support for teachers, underscoring the value of whole-child, whole-environment approaches in early intervention. Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to severe functional decline and death, imposing significant physical, emotional, and ethical burdens on patients and healthcare providers. With no curative treatment, ALS care depends on the early and sustained integration of palliative care to address complex and evolving needs. Nurses play a pivotal role in this process, yet their lived experiences remain underexplored. This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on nurses’ experiences in ALS care, with a focus on emotional, ethical, and palliative dimensions. Methods: A meta-synthesis of qualitative studies was conducted using Sandelowski and Barroso’s four-step method. A systematic search across five databases identified eight studies exploring nurses’ experiences with ALS care. Thematic synthesis was applied to extract overarching patterns. Results: Three core themes emerged: (1) Relational Dimension: From challenges to empathy and Trust and mistrust—emphasizing communication barriers and the value of relational trust; (2) Care Dimension: Competence, Palliative care needs, and Rewarding complexity—highlighting the emotional demands of care, the need for timely palliative integration, and the professional meaning derived from ALS care; (3) Ethical Dimension: Medical interventionism and Patient-centered values—exploring dilemmas around life-sustaining treatments, patient autonomy, and end-of-life decisions. Conclusion: Nurses in ALS care face complex emotional and ethical challenges that call for strong institutional support and palliative training. Enhancing palliative care integration from diagnosis, alongside targeted education and psychological support, is crucial to improving care quality and sustaining the well-being of both patients and nurses. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease, and multiple sclerosis, are characterized by progressive loss of neuronal structure and function, leading to severe cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments. They pose a significant and growing challenge due to their rising prevalence and impact on global health systems. The societal and emotional toll on patients, caregivers, and healthcare infrastructures is considerable. While significant progress has been made in elucidating the pathological hallmarks of these disorders, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Increasing evidence implicates oligodendrocytes and their progenitors—oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs)—in the pathogenesis of several NDs, beyond their traditionally recognized role in demyelinating conditions such as MS. Oligodendrocytes are essential for axonal myelination, metabolic support, and neural circuit modulation in the central nervous system. Disruptions in oligodendrocyte function and myelin integrity—manifesting as demyelination, hypomyelination, or dysmyelination—have been associated with disease progression in various neurodegenerative contexts. This review consolidates recent findings on the role of OPCs in NDs, explores the concept of myelin plasticity, and discusses therapeutic strategies targeting oligodendrocyte dysfunction. By highlighting emerging research in oligodendrocyte biology, this review aims to provide a short overview of its relevance to neurodegenerative disease progression and potential therapeutic advances.
