Social media has become a vital communication tool for higher education institutions (HEIs) to reach larger targets, attract followers, and engage with diverse audiences. This study conducted a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 4148 Facebook posts from 16 public and private HEIs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The aim of the study is to evaluate users’ engagement through their reactions to various post characteristics, including format, language, and content type. The posts generated 177,022 emotes, 17,269 shares, and 8374 comments. The results showed that images are an efficient format for boosting interaction, whereas plain text posts did not generate high engagement. The English language was more conducive for generating shares, while Arabic-language posts generated more emotes and likes. The comparative analysis results showed that private HEIs are more active on their Facebook pages than public HEIs. The content analysis suggested that student-related posts generate the highest level of engagement, while announcements and faculty- and research-related posts drive the lowest levels of engagement. These results offer valuable insights into how HEIs can optimize their social media strategies to enhance user engagement. Full article

Mediating Impact of Intranasal Oxytocin on the Interaction Between Irritability and Reactive Aggression in Youth with Severe Irritability

Objective: Irritability and reactive aggression are transdiagnostic features that are predictive of adverse long-term outcomes. This investigation examined whether intranasal oxytocin administration impacts the interaction between irritability and reactive aggression, and whether these effects can be detected at a neural level via a facial expression processing task during functional MRI (fMRI). Methods: In this study, 40 children and adolescents with severe irritability and psychiatric diagnoses of disruptive mood and behavioral disorders were assigned to either intranasal oxytocin or placebo administration over a 3-week period in a randomized, double-blind trial (ClinicalTrials, NCT02824627). Clinical measures and fMRI during a facial expression processing task were collected pre- and post-intervention. Brain regions sensitive to oxytocin administration were determined using whole-brain statistical analyses, with post hoc analyses to determine whether changes in the neural activity mediated the relationship between changes in irritability and reactive aggression across the intervention period. Results: Youth who received intranasal oxytocin administration exhibited significant decreases in irritability and reactive aggression compared to their counterparts in the placebo group. Further, oxytocin administration was associated with significant increases in neural activity in the right superior prefrontal cortex, which fully mediated the relationship between improvements in irritability and improvements in reactive aggression. Conclusions: Intranasal oxytocin significantly reduced irritability and reactive aggression in youth, as well as neural activity in the prefrontal cortex, such that increases in the cortical activity fully mediated the relationship between changes in irritability and reactive aggression. Taken together, these findings may reflect oxytocin-related enhancements in emotional regulation in youth with severe irritability, a potential therapeutic mechanism for mitigating reactive aggression. This study assessed whether COVID-19 pandemic experiences were associated with excessive alcohol use during the first year of the pandemic in Iowa, a heavy-drinking midwestern US state. We analyzed survey data from 4047 adult residents of Iowa collected in August 2020, focusing on three pandemic-related stressors (e.g., emotional reactions to the pandemic; disruption of daily activities; and financial hardship) and salient social support. Using multiple logistic regression, we tested correlates of increased drinking, heavy drinking, and binge drinking, controlling for demographic characteristics and health status. We found that nearly half (47.6%) of respondents did not change their drinking compared to before the pandemic; however, 12.4% of respondents reported increasing their drinking and 5.3% reported decreasing their drinking. Emotional reactions to the pandemic and disruption of daily activities were associated with higher odds of increased drinking, and rurality was associated with lower odds of increased drinking. No pandemic-related stressor was associated with heavy or binge drinking, but social support was associated with lower odds of binge drinking. Thus, we concluded that some pandemic-related stressors may explain increased drinking but not heavy or binge drinking. Understanding the nuances of alcohol use can inform preventive interventions, policy decisions, and preparations for future catastrophic events. Full article

This study used the Q methodology to examine how Korean science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students perceive the experience of reading classical texts and how such experiences relate to their overall well-being. We developed 31 statements for the Q-sorting process and collected data from 39 undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The analysis identified three distinct perception types: type 1—exploratory type, which broadens thinking through diverse perspectives, type 2—experience type, which shares achievement and enjoyment through reading together, and type 3—insight type, which seeks universal values and truth. These findings suggest that, for science and engineering students, reading classics offers a multidimensional experience—encompassing intellectual expansion, relational engagement, and philosophical reflection—beyond conventional academic activities. In particular, the therapeutic dimension of reading, as discussed in bibliotherapy, has emerged as a mechanism that supports self-reflection and emotional resilience. Although each type approached classical reading differently, the participants demonstrated varied perceptions that reflect dimensions of well-being, such as emotional awareness, relational connection, and self-reflection, as expressed through the Q-sorting of pre-defined statements. Based on these results, this study concludes that classical reading can function as a significant mechanism for promoting well-being, offering new directions and practical implications for classical reading education. Purpose: To investigate the impact of mental fatigue on the shooting accuracy and movement timing in the instep kick of Asian high-level soccer players. Methods: Eight male collegiate soccer players (age 22.00 ± 0.93 years) were tested before and after mental fatigue induction. Mental fatigue was induced via a 30 min Stroop task. The effectiveness of fatigue induction was assessed using heart rate variability (HRV), a visual analog scale (VAS), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). Shooting performance was evaluated before and after mental fatigue using the Loughborough Soccer Shooting Test (LSST) and by evaluating timing by means of high-speed imaging. Results: Following mental fatigue induction, HRV decreased. Subjects’ motivation (VAS) to exercise significantly decreased (p < 0.001), while VAS mental fatigue level (p < 0.001) and mental effort level (p < 0.002) significantly increased. Significant differences were observed after completing the Stroop task for ABQ Emotional/Physical Exhaustion (p < 0.007), Reduced Sense of Accomplishment (p < 0.007), Sport Devaluation (p < 0.006), and overall burnout level (p < 0.002). LSST showed that the subjects’ left foot test scores (−4.13, p < 0.013), right foot test scores (−3, p < 0.001), and total scores (−3.16, p < 0.001) significantly decreased. Although movement times increased slightly after fatigue, they did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Mental fatigue significantly impairs the shooting accuracy of collegiate soccer players, as evidenced by decreased LSST scores. However, it has no significant effect on event duration during shooting execution. Mental fatigue affected decision-making but not shooting movement timing. More cognitively challenging tasks are more affected by mental fatigue. Full article

Background and Objectives: With the widespread integration of digital media into daily life, social media addiction (SMA) has become a growing concern for university students’ mental health. Based on attachment theory, this study examined how attachment anxiety and avoidance influence SMA through fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and loneliness. Methods: A sample of 400 Chinese university students completed the 16-item short version of the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR), the 8-item Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNE), the 6-item Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale–Short Form (RULS-6), and the 6-item Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). Using the PROCESS macro (Model 6), a chained mediation model was tested. Results: Attachment anxiety positively predicts SMA (β = 0.42); the chained mediation pathway through FNE and loneliness accounts for ab = 0.06 of this effect, alongside additional single-mediator paths. In contrast, attachment avoidance shows a weaker total effect (β = −0.08) and a small negative chained mediation effect (ab = −0.02), offset by opposing single-mediator paths via FNE (negative) and loneliness (positive), resulting in a nonsignificant total indirect effect. Discussion: These findings suggest that in the Chinese cultural context, where social evaluation and belonging are emphasized, insecure attachment may heighten emotional reliance on social media. This study elucidates the socio-emotional mechanisms underlying SMA and extends the application of attachment theory to the digital media environment. Full article

Despite extensive research on early childhood education (ECE) quality at the preschool level, toddler settings remain comparatively understudied, particularly in Chile and Latin America. Research suggests that quality ECE strengthens child development, while low-quality services can be harmful. ECE quality comprises structural features like ratios and classroom resources, and process features related to interactions within classrooms. This study examines how process and structural quality indicators are related in nurseries serving disadvantaged backgrounds. Data were collected from 51 Chilean urban classrooms serving children aged 12–24 months. Classrooms were evaluated using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) for toddlers, questionnaires, and checklists. Latent Profile Analysis identified process quality patterns, while multinomial regression examined associations with structural quality indicators. The results revealed low-to-moderate process quality across classrooms (M = 4.78 for Emotional and Behavioral Support; M = 2.35 for Engaged Support for Learning), with three distinct quality clusters emerging. Marginally significant differences were found between high- and low-performing clusters regarding classroom space (p = 0.06), number of toys (p = 0.08), and staff educational credentials (p = 0.01–0.07). No significant differences emerged for group sizes or adult-to-child ratios, which are heavily regulated in Chile. These findings underscore the need to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms ensuring all children access quality ECE. Full article

Background/Objectives: Impairment in self-awareness (ISA) is one of the common consequences of an acquired brain injury (ABI) and is associated with anosodiaphoria. Collectively, these co-occurring neuropsychological disorders pose significant obstacles in the neurorehabilitation of moderate-to-severe ABI patients. Individuals who recover from ISA may present with anxiety and/or depression as adaptive reactions to the ABI, along with related functional disabilities. The present study investigated whether the level of metacognitive self-awareness (SA) is associated with the presence of anxiety and depression, apathy, or anosodiaphoria in patients with moderate-to-severe ABI. It aimed also at investigating the possible relationship between the severity of disability and both psycho-emotional diseases and the presence of PTSD symptoms in patients with high metacognitive SA. Methods: Sixty patients with moderate-to-severe ABI and different levels of metacognitive SA completed a series of questionnaires, which assessed their self-reported metacognitive SA, anosodiaphoria, anxiety and depression, apathy, and PTSD symptoms. Results: Low-metacognitive-SA patients showed lower levels of anxiety and depression and higher anosodiaphoria than high-metacognitive-SA patients. Patients with high metacognitive SA and high levels of disability showed significant higher states of anxiety and PTSD symptoms than patients with high metacognitive SA and low levels of disability. Conclusions: The neurorehabilitation of individuals with moderate to severe ABI should address, in particular, the complex interaction between ISA and anxiety and depression in patients during the rehabilitation process. Background/Objective: Nursing and non-nursing students experience high stress levels, making them susceptible to mental health issues. This study compared stress, anxiety, and depression between these two groups after 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it explored the relationship between perceived helplessness, self-efficacy, and symptoms of mental stress and strain resulting from challenging internship conditions for nursing students. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 154 nursing students (mean age = 22.43 years) and 291 non-nursing students (mean age = 27.7 years). Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), and a questionnaire on mental stress and strain. Results: Nursing students reported significantly higher scores in the DASS-21 subscales depression (ηp2 = 0.016) and anxiety (ηp2 = 0.037), and global stress (PSS-10; ηp2 = 0.029) compared to non-nursing students, but no significant difference on the DASS-21 Stress subscale. The observed group differences in the present study may be partially attributed to group differences in demographic factors. Helplessness correlated strongly with nearly all scales of mental stress and strain during internships (all p’s < 0.001), while self-efficacy showed a strong negative correlation with non-occupational difficulties, health impairment, and emotional problems (all p’s < 0.001). Conclusions: Nursing students experience elevated depression, anxiety, and perceived stress levels compared to non-nursing students. Stronger feelings of helplessness and lower confidence in their ability to overcome challenges were strongly correlated with mental stress and strain during clinical training. Targeted interventions such as cognitive behavioral training and stress management should be integrated into nursing curricula to enhance resilience and coping strategies. Full article

The presence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in modern working and living environments is growing rapidly. The data collected in such environments enable us to model users’ behaviour and consequently identify and authenticate them. However, these data may contain information about the user’s current activity, emotional state, or other aspects that are not relevant for authentication. In this work, we employ adversarial deep learning techniques to remove privacy-revealing information from the data while keeping the authentication performance levels almost intact. Furthermore, we develop and apply various techniques to offload the computationally weak edge devices that are part of the machine learning pipeline at training and inference time. Our experiments, conducted on two multimodal IoT datasets, show that P2ESA can be efficiently deployed and trained, and with user identification rates of between 75.85% and 93.31% (c.f. 6.67% baseline), can represent a promising support solution for authentication, while simultaneously fully obfuscating sensitive information. Employee turnover remains a critical challenge for organizations, prompting an examination of how leadership approaches influence employees’ intentions to leave. This study investigates the impact of transformational leadership on turnover intention, focusing on emotional exhaustion and creativity as potential mediators. The study employs a quantitative design grounded in leadership and organizational psychology theory and surveys 182 professionals working in the information technology sector across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Structural equation modeling reveals that transformational leadership reduces turnover intention by alleviating emotional exhaustion, highlighting the importance of psychological well-being in employee retention. While transformational leadership enhances employee creativity, creativity did not significantly mediate turnover intention in this context. These findings suggest that strategies that foster engagement and reduce burnout in knowledge-intensive industries can strengthen organizational commitment and improve retention. This study contributes to the understanding of behavioral mechanisms linking leadership to employee outcomes and offers actionable insights for modern organizations aiming to address turnover through supportive, empowering leadership practices. Additional mediators and contextual variables should be explored in further research. Full article

Background/Objectives: Dry eye (DE) can cause persistent eye rubbing, contributing to keratoconus (KC) development and progression. Both keratoconus (KC) and dry eye (DE) significantly impact patients’ functional and emotional well-being, with KC patients exhibiting a higher prevalence of DE symptoms and signs. This study examined whether functional (KEPAQ-F) and emotional (KEPAQ-E) quality of life, assessed by the Keratoconus End-Points Assessment Questionnaire, differ when influenced by symptoms and clinical signs of general DE versus meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in KC patients. Methods: Volunteers with KC (ages 18–70) underwent DE and MGD assessments, completing OSDI, MGD (MGDQ), and KEPAQ questionnaires. Clinical measures included NITBUT, Schirmer, and meibography. Pearson correlations and path analysis assessed relationships between DE and MGD symptoms and KEPAQ-F/E. Results: Forty-five KC participants (mean age: 45 ± 13, range: 20–69 years, 25 males) were enrolled; 22 (49%) had DE, and 15 (33%) had MGD. Significant correlations were observed between KEPAQ-E (2.9 ± 3.0 Logit) and KEPAQ-F (1.7 ± 3.0 Logit) scores with OSDI (26.5 ± 26.7) and MGDQ (3.3 ± 2.2) scores, and all Belin outcome measures A-D for all participants. In participants with diagnosed dry eye, KEPAQ E and F were also significantly correlated with loss of meibomian glands in the lower eyelids (R = −0.44, p = 0.04). Path analysis showed both DE and MGD were negatively correlated with lower KEPAQ-E and KEPAQ-F scores, with DE symptoms were more influential (p < 0.05). The model explained 42% of the KEPAQ-E variance and 41% of the KEPAQ-F variance. Conclusions: Emotional and functional quality of life in KC is significantly and negatively related to DE and MGD symptoms, with DE symptoms exhibiting a greater impact. Furthermore, greater loss of meibomian glands in the lower eyelids is significantly associated with reduced emotional and functional KEPAQ scores in DE patients. These results underscore the critical importance of evaluating DE in KC to improve patient-reported outcomes. Full article

Despite the extensive evidence supporting the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation, differences in results may be due to the influence of cognitive and non-cognitive aspects in people with dementia. The aim of this systematic review is to identify the most reliable variables in forecasting the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation in people with mild to moderate dementia. According to PRISMA guidelines, the research was conducted using five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, APA PsycInfo), considering randomized controlled trials. A total of six studies were included. Different aspects moderating the gain resulting from cognitive intervention were collected and assessed in terms of demographic, cognitive, emotional, social, and quality of life parameters. People with dementia benefit more from cognitive intervention if they are female, if they have a low formal education level, a low baseline level of cognitive function, and lower depressive symptoms, and if caregivers actively participate in sessions. Quality of life, if low at baseline, also seems to improve following CST intervention. A deeper understanding of the cognitive and non-cognitive aspects ensuring improvement after cognitive stimulation may guide future research to develop more personalized interventions. Full article

Background: Rapid urbanization has intensified the challenges of freight transport, particularly in last-mile (LM) delivery, leading to rising costs and environmental externalities. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising innovation to address these issues. While much of the existing literature emphasizes business and operational perspectives, this study focuses on the acceptance of AVs from the standpoint of e-consumers—individuals who make purchases via digital platforms—in an emerging market context. Methods: Grounded in an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), which is specifically suited to consumer-focused technology adoption research, this study incorporates five constructs tailored to AV adoption. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to survey data collected from 304 e-consumers in Northeast Brazil. Results: The findings reveal that performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, and environmental awareness exert significant positive effects on acceptance and intention to use AVs for LM delivery. Social influence shows a weaker, yet still positive, impact. Importantly, price sensitivity exhibits a minimal effect, suggesting that while consumers are generally cost-conscious, perceived value may outweigh price concerns in early adoption stages. Conclusions: These results offer valuable insights for policymakers and logistics providers aiming to implement consumer-oriented, cost-effective AV solutions in LM delivery, particularly in emerging economies. The findings emphasize the need for strategies that highlight the practical, emotional, and environmental benefits of AVs to foster market acceptance. Full article

Passion, Motivation, and Subjective Well-Being in Sport for People with Disabilities

Objective: Considering the absence of research testing the entire sequence of passion, behavioral regulation, and subjective well-being (SWB), this study aimed to analyze the hypothetical causal relationships between the variables of a model that integrates the Dualistic Passion Model (DMP) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in order to understand the impact of harmonious passion (HP) and obsessive passion (OP) and the regulation of motivation on the SWB of elite athletes with disability. Method: This study includes 143 elite athletes from national adapted sports (36 female; 107 male) aged between 15 and 59 (M = 29.21; SD = 10.45). Weekly training sessions ranged from 1 to 12 (M = 4.52; SD = 2.71), and the years of competitive practice ranged from 1 to 28 (M = 5.55; SD = 6.98). Data were collected using valid and reliable questionnaires for the study population and analyzed using structural equation analysis. The following results were identified: a positive and a significant effect between OP and self-determination motivation (SDM); a positive but not a significant effect between OP and non-self-determination motivation (NSDM); a significant effect between SDM and SWL and SDM and positive affect (PA); and, finally, a positive but non-significant effect between SDM and negative affect (NA). In contrast, there is a positive and significant effect between HP and SDM; a negative and significant effect between HP and NSDM; a positive but non-significant effect between NSDM and SWL; a negative and significant effect between NSDM and PA; and, finally, a positive and significant effect between NSDM and NA. Conclusions: The perception of passion regarding sport can be a positive predictor of SDM, which, in turn, can influence levels of SWB, both from a cognitive point of view (SWL) and from an emotional point of view (PA). This reinforces the positive effect of the self-determination behavior in adapted sport on SWB and its contribution to health and quality of life in people with disabilities. Full article
