To solve the problem of traditional engineering drilling rig propulsion systems being difficult to adapt to complex working conditions due to their bulky structure and poor load adaptability, this study proposes a new type of mechanical hydraulic composite electro-hydraulic proportional propulsion system. The system innovatively adopts a composite design of parallel hydraulic cylinders and movable pulley groups in mechanical structure, aiming to achieve system lightweighting through displacement multiplication effect. In terms of control strategy, a fuzzy adaptive PID controller based on position feedback was designed to improve the dynamic tracking performance and robustness of the system under nonlinear time-varying loads. The study established a multi physics domain mathematical model of the system and conducted joint simulation using AMESim and MATLAB/Simulink to deeply verify the overall performance of the proposed scheme. The simulation results show that the mechanical structure can stably achieve a 2:1 displacement multiplication effect, providing a feasible path for shortening the system size. Compared with traditional PID control, the proposed fuzzy adaptive PID control strategy significantly improves the positioning accuracy of the system. The maximum tracking errors of the master and slave hydraulic cylinders are reduced from 6.3 mm and 10.4 mm to 2.3 mm and 5.6 mm, respectively, and the accuracy is improved by 63.49% and 46.15%, providing theoretical support and technical reference for the design of engineering drilling rig propulsion control systems. Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) strategies are gaining increasingly more traction in almost every field of engineering, offering stakeholders advanced capabilities in system monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance. Primary flight control actuators are safety-critical elements within aircraft flight control systems (FCSs), and currently, they are mainly based on Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) or Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators (EHSAs). Despite the widespread diffusion of PHM methodologies, the application of these technologies for EHAs is still somewhat limited, and the available information is often restricted to the industrial sector. To fill this gap, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art EHA PHM strategies for aerospace applications, as well as their limitations and further developments through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). An objective and clear methodology, combined with the use of attractive and informative graphics, guides the reader towards a thorough investigation of the state of the art, as well as the challenges in the field that limit a wider implementation. It is deemed that the information presented in this review will be useful for new researchers and industry engineers as it provides indications for conducting research in this specific and still not very investigated sector. An electro-hydraulic servo loading system for a pavement mechanical properties test device was designed. The simulation analysis and test results showed that the PID control met the design requirements, but the output’s maximum error did not. Therefore, a fast terminal sliding mode control strategy with an extended state observer (ESO) was proposed. A tracking differentiator was constructed to obtain smooth differential signals from the input signals. The order of the system was reduced by considering the third and higher orders of the system as the total disturbance, and the states and the total disturbance of the system were estimated using the ESO. The fast terminal sliding mode control achieved fast convergence of the system within a limited time. The simulation results showed that the proposed control strategy improved the system accuracy and anti-disturbance ability, and system control performance was optimized. Full article

This paper presents some of the most significant findings in the design of a hydraulic servomechanism for flight controls, which were primarily achieved by the first author during his activity in an aviation institute. These results are grouped into four main topics. The first one outlines a classical theory, from the 1950s–1970s, of the analysis of nonlinear automatic systems and namely the issue of absolute stability. The uninformed public may be misled by the adjective “absolute”. This is not a “maximalist” solution of stability but rather highlights in the system of equations a nonlinear function that describes, for the case of hydraulic servomechanisms, the flow-control dependence in the distributor spool. This function is odd, and it is therefore located in quadrants 1 and 3. The decision regarding stability is made within the so-called Lurie problem and is materialized by a matrix inequality, called the Lefschetz condition, which must be satisfied by the parameters of the electrohydraulic servomechanism and also by the components of the control feedback vector. Another approach starts from a classical theorem of V. M. Popov, extended in a stochastic framework by T. Morozan and I. Ursu, which ends with the description of the local and global spool valve flow-control characteristics that ensure stability in the large with respect to bounded perturbations for the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism. We add that a conjecture regarding the more pronounced flexibility of mathematical models in relation to mathematical instruments (theories) was used. Furthermore, the second topic concerns, the importance of the impedance characteristic of the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism in preventing flutter of the flight controls is emphasized. Impedance, also called dynamic stiffness, is defined as the ratio, in a dynamic regime, between the output exerted force (at the actuator rod of the servomechanism) and the displacement induced by this force under the assumption of a blocked input. It is demonstrated in the paper that there are two forms of the impedance function: one that favors the appearance of flutter and another that allows for flutter damping. It is interesting to note that these theoretical considerations were established in the institute’s reports some time before their introduction in the Aviation Regulation AvP.970. However, it was precisely the absence of the impedance criterion in the regulation at the appropriate time that ultimately led, by chance or not, to a disaster: the crash of a prototype due to tailplane flutter. A third topic shows how an important problem in the theory of automatic systems of the 1970s–1980s, namely the robust synthesis of the servomechanism, is formulated, applied and solved in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In general, the solution of a robust servomechanism problem consists of two distinct components: a servo-compensator, in fact an internal model of the exogenous dynamics, and a stabilizing compensator. These components are adapted in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In addition to the classical case mentioned above, a synthesis problem of an anti-windup (anti-saturation) compensator is formulated and solved. The fourth topic, and the last one presented in detail, is the synthesis of a fuzzy supervised neurocontrol (FSNC) for the position tracking of an electrohydraulic servomechanism, with experimental validation, in the laboratory, of this control law. The neurocontrol module is designed using a single-layered perceptron architecture. Neurocontrol is in principle optimal, but it is not free from saturation. To this end, in order to counteract saturation, a Mamdani-type fuzzy logic was developed, which takes control when neurocontrol has saturated. It returns to neurocontrol when it returns to normal, respectively, when saturation is eliminated. What distinguishes this FSNC law is its simplicity and efficiency and especially the fact that against quite a few opponents in the field, it still works very well on quite complicated physical systems. Finally, a brief section reviews some recent works by the authors, in which current approaches to hydraulic servomechanisms are presented: the backstepping control synthesis technique, input delay treated with Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals, and critical stability treated with Lyapunov–Malkin theory. Fuel electro-hydraulic servo valves are core components in the fuel control system of aero-engines, and their performance directly affects thrust regulation and power output precision. Due to the combustibility of the working medium in fuel systems and the lack of effective circulation filtration, the retention of micron-sized particles within the valve gap can lead to valve spool jamming, which is a critical reliability issue. This study, based on fractal theory and the liquid–solid two-phase flow model, proposes a parametric model for non-ideal surface valve gaps and analyzes the dynamics of particles subjected to drag, lift, and buoyant forces on rough surfaces. By numerically analyzing flow field models with different roughness levels and comparing them with an ideal smooth gap model, the migration characteristics of particles were studied. To verify the accuracy of the model, an upscaled experimental setup was built based on similarity theory, and PIV experiments were conducted for validation. Experimental results show that the particle release position and valve surface roughness significantly affect particle migration time. The weight of the release position on particle migration time is 63%, while the impact of valve surface roughness is 37%. In models with different roughness levels, the particle migration time increases more rapidly for roughness values greater than Ra0.4, while for values less than Ra0.4, the increase in migration time is slower. Furthermore, the study reveals that particle migration trajectories are independent of flow velocity, with velocity only affecting particle migration time. This research provides theoretical support for enhancing the reliability of fuel electro-hydraulic servo valves and offers a new perspective for the design of highly reliable hydraulic components. Electric forklifts are increasingly adopted in industrial environments due to their energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and lower operating noise compared to combustion alternatives. This paper presents a novel methodology for estimating the transported load weight in electric forklifts based on the output power signal of the DC–DC converter driving the electro-hydraulic lifting system. The proposed method leverages non-intrusive measurements of voltage and current to compute the lifting power, lifting speed, and energy, also allowing the computation of the lifting efficiency. The analysis confirmed that lifting energy is not linearly correlated with transported weight but lifting efficiency can be reasonably approximated as a function of lifting power and lifting speed, subsequently allowing the estimation of the transported mass. Experimental validation using 53 lifting events demonstrated that the methodology can estimate load weight with a reasonable mean absolute percentage error of 10.6% and 6.4% when using linear or multivariable regression analysis, respectively. These results demonstrate that the approach is sufficiently accurate for practical applications such as triggering load warnings when the estimated mass exceeds predefined safety thresholds. This study investigates the external load and positional constraints’ impact on the accuracy and performance of an autonomous adaptive electrohydraulic actuator with pump control intended for mobile equipment. An actuator simulation model was developed in the MATLAB/Simulink (version R2021A) environment, and a full-scale experimental setup was constructed to validate this model. Various motion trajectories under different load conditions were analyzed to evaluate discrepancies between simulated and experimental results and to identify key performance characteristics across operational modes. The results demonstrate that the simulation model adequately replicates the actuator’s dynamic behavior, although deviations emerge under high-load conditions. Notably, in the absence of external load, the static positioning error does not exceed 0.025 mm (0.05% of the 50 mm target value), while under the maximum load of 8000 N, the error increases to 0.075 mm (0.15% of the 50 mm target value). These limitations are primarily due to current constraints imposed by the actuator’s power supply capacity (up to 300 W at 24 V), which restrict pressure buildup rates under heavy loads. Nevertheless, the proposed control system exhibits robustness to load variations and ensures positioning accuracy within acceptable limits, demonstrating its practical suitability for mobile machinery applications. The developed simulation model also serves as a valuable tool for control system tuning and testing in the absence of a physical prototype. Full article

Pulsed Power Plasma Stimulation (3PS) represents a promising and environmentally favorable alternative to conventional well stimulation techniques for enhancing subsurface permeability. This comprehensive review tracks the evolution of plasma-based rock stimulation, offering insights from key laboratory, numerical, and field-scale studies. The review begins with foundational electrohydraulic discharge concepts and progresses through the evolution of Pulsed Arc Electrohydraulic Discharge (PAED) and the more advanced 3PS systems. High-voltage, ultrafast plasma discharges generate mechanical shockwaves and localized thermal effects that result in complex fracture networks, particularly in tight and crystalline formations. Compared to conventional well stimulation techniques, 3PS reduces water use, avoids chemical additives, and minimizes induced seismicity. Laboratory studies demonstrate significant improvements in permeability, porosity, and fracture intensity, while field trials show an increase in production from oil, gas, and geothermal wells. However, 3PS faces some limitations such as short stimulation radii and logistical constraints in wireline-based delivery systems. Emerging technologies like plasma-assisted drilling and hybrid PDC–plasma tools offer promising integration pathways. Overall, 3PS provides a practical, scalable, low-impact stimulation approach with broad applicability across energy sectors, especially in environmentally sensitive or water-scarce regions. To advance the construction of intelligent mining, electro-hydraulic digital control technology has emerged as a critical direction for the digital transformation of mining machinery. This study proposes a digital control scheme based on the pressure state of the system and the operating state of the actuator. The scheme utilises a novel convergence rate sliding film position control method to regulate the system pressure in real time by controlling the pilot valve, which is driven by a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Moreover, a prototype of an incremental digital pressure control valve was developed for high-pressure, high water-based working conditions. A simulation model of the valve was established using AMESim/Simulink, and dynamic characteristics under various operating conditions were analyzed. The relative error between simulated and experimental pressure results remained within ±4.7%. Finally, a multi-parameter optimization was conducted using a genetic algorithm. The results demonstrate that the optimized digital pressure control valve achieved a stabilized inlet pressure within 44.8 ms, with a pressure overshoot of 4.1% and a response time of 20.1 ms, exhibiting excellent real-time dynamic pressure regulation capabilities. This study provides a theoretical foundation and practical reference for comprehensive research on pressure control in underground emulsion pump stations. Full article

With the further implementation and development of the Western Development Strategy, studying the mechanical behavior and deformation characteristics of deep-buried tunnels in layered hard rock under high ground stress conditions holds considerable engineering significance. To study the mechanical properties and long-term deformation and failure characteristics of different bedding stratified rocks, this research employed an MTS815 electro-hydraulic servo rock testing system and a French TOP rheometer. Triaxial compression tests, rheological property tests, and long-term cyclic and unloading tests were conducted on shale samples under varying confining pressures and bedding angles. The results indicate that (1) under triaxial compression, shale demonstrates pronounced anisotropic behavior. When the confining pressure is constant, the peak strength of the rock sample exhibits a “U”-shaped variation with the bedding angle (its minimum value at 60°). For a fixed bedding angle, the peak strength of the rock sample progressively increases as the confining pressure rises. (2) The mode of shale failure varies with the angle: at 0°, shale exhibits conjugate shear failure; at 30°, shear slip failure along the bedding is controlled by the bedding weak plane; at 60° and 90°, failure occurs through the bedding. (3) During the creep process of layered shale, brittle failure characteristics are evident, with microcracks within the sample gradually failing at stress concentration points. The decelerated and stable creep stages are prominent; while the accelerated creep stage is less noticeable, the creep rate increases with increasing stress level. (4) Under low confining pressure, the peak strength during cyclic loading and unloading creep processes is lower than that of conventional triaxial tests when the bedding plane dip angles are 0° and 30°, which is the opposite at 60° and 90°. (5) In the cyclic loading and unloading process, Poisson’s ratio gradually increases, whereas the elastic modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus gradually decrease. Full article

The instability of mine roadways is significantly influenced by the coupled effects of groundwater seepage and non-uniform loading. These interactions often induce localized plastic deformation and progressive failure, particularly in the roof and sidewall regions. Seepage elevates pore water pressure and deteriorates the mechanical properties of the rock mass, while non-uniform loading leads to stress concentration. The combined effect facilitates the propagation of microcracks and the formation of shear zones, ultimately resulting in localized instability. This initial damage disrupts the mechanical equilibrium and can evolve into severe geohazards, including roof collapse, water inrush, and rockburst. Therefore, understanding the damage and failure mechanisms of mine roadways at the mesoscale, under the combined influence of stress heterogeneity and hydraulic weakening, is of critical importance based on laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. However, the large scale of in situ roadway structures imposes significant constraints on full-scale physical modeling due to limitations in laboratory space and loading capacity. To address these challenges, a straight-wall circular arch roadway was adopted as the geometric prototype, with a total height of 4 m (2 m for the straight wall and 2 m for the arch), a base width of 4 m, and an arch radius of 2 m. Scaled physical models were fabricated based on geometric similarity principles, using defect-bearing sandstone specimens with dimensions of 100 mm × 30 mm × 100 mm (length × width × height) and pore-type defects measuring 40 mm × 20 mm × 20 mm (base × wall height × arch radius), to replicate the stress distribution and deformation behavior of the prototype. Uniaxial compression tests on water-saturated sandstone specimens were performed using a TAW-2000 electro-hydraulic servo testing system. The failure process was continuously monitored through acoustic emission (AE) techniques and static strain acquisition systems. Concurrently, FLAC3D 6.0 numerical simulations were employed to analyze the evolution of internal stress fields and the spatial distribution of plastic zones in saturated sandstone containing pore defects. Experimental results indicate that under non-uniform loading, the stress–strain curves of saturated sandstone with pore-type defects typically exhibit four distinct deformation stages. The extent of crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence is strongly correlated with the magnitude and heterogeneity of localized stress concentrations. AE parameters, including ringing counts and peak frequencies, reveal pronounced spatial partitioning. The internal stress field exhibits an overall banded pattern, with localized variations induced by stress anisotropy. Numerical simulation results further show that shear failure zones tend to cluster regionally, while tensile failure zones are more evenly distributed. Additionally, the stress field configuration at the specimen crown significantly influences the dispersion characteristics of the stress–strain response. These findings offer valuable theoretical insights and practical guidance for surrounding rock control, early warning systems, and reinforcement strategies in water-infiltrated mine roadways subjected to non-uniform loading conditions. To enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions in public transportation systems, this study proposes a novel electro-hydraulic energy-regenerative suspension system for urban buses. A comprehensive co-simulation framework was established to evaluate system performance. Targeting ride comfort and energy regeneration performance as dual optimization objectives, we conducted systematic parameter analysis through design-of-experiments methodology to identify critical structural parameters. To streamline multi-objective optimization processes, a particle swarm optimization–back propagation (PSO-BP) neural network surrogate model was developed to approximate the complex co-simulation system. Subsequent non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) implementation enabled effective multi-objective optimization of key suspension parameters. Comparative simulations revealed that the optimized configuration achieves the following: (1) maintains ride comfort within human perception thresholds despite slight performance reduction, (2) enhances energy recovery efficiency, and (3) improves roll stability characteristics. These findings demonstrate the proposed system’s capability to balance passenger comfort with energy conservation and safety requirements. Full article

An electro-hydraulic servo system based on network control technology has the advantages of remote control, modularisation, and resource sharing. However, the electro-hydraulic servo system itself has the characteristics of strong nonlinearity and parameter uncertainty, combined with the limited communication bandwidth of the network control system, which leads to a poor control effect and limits its application. To solve the above problems, an event-triggered mechanism is introduced to filter redundant data and conserve the communication bandwidth, while a backstepping sliding mode control strategy integrating this event-triggered mechanism with a jamming observer is proposed. A model-based disturbance observer is designed to mitigate external interference effects on system control performance while enhancing robustness and disturbance response capabilities. The global stability of the closed-loop system is analysed using Lyapunov stability theory. The experimental results show that the system displacement tracking error of the controller designed in this paper can reach ±0.001 rad, and the system can reach stability in about 0.5 s. At the same time, it can significantly reduce the amount of data transmission, which effectively solves the problem of the network bandwidth limitation. Full article

To improve the dynamic response, linearity, and control accuracy of the YYSCT-250-3 tractor multi-circuit hydraulic output power tester, this study develops a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-tuned fuzzy-proportional–integral–derivative (Fuzzy-PID) control strategy. By modulating the actuator-driven ball valve’s rotation angle (0–90°) in the proportional flow valve, the controller uses both the flow rate error and its rate of change between the setpoint and the flow meter feedback as fuzzy inputs to adjust the PID outputs. A detailed mathematical model of the electro-hydraulic proportional flow system is established, incorporating hydraulic resistance torque on the ball valve spool and friction coefficients to enhance accuracy. Through MATLAB/Simulink (R2022a) simulations, the PSO algorithm optimizes the fuzzy membership functions and PID gains, yielding faster response, reduced overshoot, and minimal steady-state error. The optimized controller achieved relative steady-state flow errors within ±1.0% and absolute flow control errors within ±0.5 L/min, significantly outperforming the traditional PID controller. These results demonstrate that the PSO-optimized Fuzzy-PID approach effectively addresses the flow control challenges of the YYSCT-250-3, enhancing both testing efficiency and precision. This work provides a robust theoretical framework and practical reference for rapid, high-precision flow control in multi-channel hydraulic power testing. Full article

Hydrostatic transmissions are essential in applications demanding variable torque and speed, such as mining and agricultural machinery, due to their compact design, high power-to-weight ratio, and efficient variable speed control. Despite these advantages, their inherent nonlinearities and susceptibility to parametric uncertainties pose significant challenges for precise motion control. This study presents a comparative analysis of classical PID and robust H-infinity controllers for regulating the speed of hydraulic motors under varying torsional loads. A linearized uncertain system model is developed using upper Linear Fractional Transformations (LFTs) to capture key parametric uncertainties. A simplified H-infinity controller is designed to robustly manage system dynamics, particularly addressing phase lags induced by uncertain loads. Simulation results demonstrate that the H-infinity controller offers superior performance over the PID controller in terms of stability, disturbance rejection, and robustness to load fluctuations. This work contributes a practically viable robust control solution for improving the reliability and precision of electro-hydraulic systems, particularly in demanding, real-world environments.
