Sustainability education has become a global priority in educational systems, aiming to equip learners with the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to address complex environmental and social challenges. This study specifically aims to understand the role of science education in promoting students’ awareness of sustainability and their understanding of the interconnected relationship between humans and the environment, based on the perceptions and practices of primary science teachers in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. A qualitative approach was utilized, which included semi-structured interviews complemented by classroom observations as primary data collection instruments. The targeted participants comprised a purposive sample consisting of forty-nine primary-level science instructors from the Al-Ahsa district, located in eastern Saudi Arabia. Emergent concepts from open and axial coding processes by using grounded theory were developed with the gathered data. Based on the findings, teachers perceive science teaching not only as knowledge delivery but as an opportunity to cultivate critical thinking and nurture eco-friendly actions among pupils. Classroom practices that underscore environmental values and principles of sustainability foster a transformative view of the teacher’s role beyond traditional boundaries. The data also highlighted classroom practices that integrate environmental values and sustainability principles, reflecting a transformative perspective on the teacher’s educational role. This study explores the role of egoistic and altruistic values on green real estate purchase intention among young consumers in Canada aged between 20 and 40 years. In addition, this study examines the mediating effects of pro-environmental self-identity between social consumption motivation and green real estate purchase intention. A quantitative cross-sectional research design with an explanatory nature is employed. A total of 432 participating consumers in Canada, comprising 44% men and 48% women, with a graduate educational background accounting for 46.7%, and the ages between 24 and 35 contributing 75.2%, were part of the study, and the data collection used a survey method with a purposive sampling, followed by a respondent-driven method. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed on the scales used for the study variables. A structural equational model and path analysis were conducted to derive the results, and the relationships were positive and significant. The study results infer the factors contributing to green real estate purchase intention, including altruistic value, egoistic value, social consumption motivation, and pro-environmental self-identity, with pro-environmental self-identity mediating the relationship. This study emphasizes the relevance of consumer values in real estate purchasing decisions, urging developers and marketers to prioritize ethical ideas, sustainable practices, and building a feeling of belonging and social connectedness. Offering eco-friendly amenities and green construction methods might attract clients, but creating a secure area for social interaction is critical. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first to explore the role of egoistic and altruistic values on purchase intention, mainly in the housing and real estate sector, with the target consumers being young consumers in Canada. This study investigates the foundational causes of unsustainability that obstruct efforts to address global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, water crises, and public health deterioration. Using qualitative research with in-depth expert interviews from education, environmental studies, and business, it finds that these global challenges, while visible on the surface, are deeply rooted in worldviews that shape human behavior, societal structures, and policies. Building on this insight, the thematic analysis manifests three interrelated systemic paradigms as the fundamental drivers of unsustainability: a crisis of wholeness, reflected in fragmented identities and collective disorientation; a disconnection from nature, shaped by human-centered perspectives; and the influence of dominant political-economic systems which prioritize growth logics over ecological and social concerns. These paradigms underlie both structural and cognitive barriers to systemic transformation, which influence the design and implementation of education for sustainability. By clarifying a body of knowledge and systemic paradigms regarding unsustainability, this paper calls for transformative education that promotes a holistic, value-based approach, eco-empathy, and critical thinking, aiming to equip future generations with the tools to challenge and transform unsustainable systems. In the context of eco-friendly e-commerce, understanding the psychological and experiential mechanisms that drive consumers’ online purchasing behavior is essential for promoting sustainable platform development. This study aims to fill a critical gap in the literature by examining how social interaction, entertainment, and sales promotion influence consumers’ purchase intentions through the mediating roles of perceived value and immersive flow experience. Grounded in the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S-O-R) theoretical framework, we developed a structural model and conducted an empirical analysis using survey data collected from 438 online shoppers. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS and AMOS through SEM. The results show that social interaction and sales promotion significantly enhance both perceived value and flow experience, which in turn positively influence consumers’ purchase intentions. However, entertainment exhibits a negative and significant effect on perceived value and does not significantly affect flow experience, indicating that hedonic content may not always translate into perceived usefulness or deep engagement. Moreover, the influence of social interaction on flow experience was also found to be negative and significant, suggesting that not all forms of interaction necessarily lead to immersive experiences. These findings highlight the complex psychological dynamics in digital consumption. This study contributes original insights by integrating psychological engagement mechanisms with the goal of digital sustainability, offering practical implications for online retailers aiming to enhance user engagement and platform longevity through experience-driven strategies. This study focuses on the impact of China’s digital economy on sustainable modernization from 2011 to 2021, using provincial panel data for empirical analysis. By applying threshold and mediation models, we find that the digital economy promotes modernization through industrial upgrading (with a mediating effect of 38%) and trade openness (coefficient = 0.234). The research reveals “U-shaped” nonlinear threshold effects at specific levels of digital development (2.218), market efficiency (9.212), and technological progress (12.224). Eastern provinces benefit significantly (coefficient ranging from 0.12 to 0.15 ***), while western regions initially experience some inhibition (coefficient = −0.08 *). Industrial digitalization (coefficient = 0.13 ***) and innovation ecosystems (coefficient = 0.09 ***) play crucial roles in driving eco-efficiency and equity, in line with Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 13. Meanwhile, the impacts of infrastructure (coefficient = 0.07) and industrialization (coefficient = 0.085) are delayed. Economic modernization improves (coefficient = 0.37 ***), yet social modernization declines (coefficient = −0.12 *). This study not only enriches economic theory but also extends the environmental Kuznets curve to the digital economy domain. We propose tiered policy recommendations, including the construction of green digital infrastructure, carbon pricing, and rural digital transformation, which are applicable to China and offer valuable references for emerging economies aiming to achieve inclusive low-carbon growth in the digital era. Future research could further explore the differentiated mechanisms of various digital technologies in the modernization process across different regions and how to optimize policy combinations to better balance digital innovation with sustainable development goals. This article explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital marketing through social and mobile networks and its role in fostering sustainable consumer behavior. AI enhances personalization, sentiment analysis, and campaign automation, reshaping marketing dynamics and enabling brands to engage interactively with users. A quantitative study conducted on 501 social media users evaluates how perceived benefits, risks, trust, transparency, satisfaction, and social norms influence the acceptance of AI-driven marketing tools. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the findings show that social norms and perceived transparency significantly enhance trust in AI, while perceived benefits and satisfaction drive user acceptance; conversely, perceived risks and negative emotions undermine trust. From a sustainability perspective, AI supports the efficient targeting and personalization of eco-conscious content, aligning marketing with environmentally responsible practices. This study contributes to ethical AI and sustainable digital strategies by offering empirical evidence and practical insights for responsible AI integration in marketing. Full article

The demolition of structures generates waste that poses environmental, social, and economic challenges. This study explores the effects of incorporating recycled concrete powder (RCP) into concrete, using it as a cement substitute at levels of 0%, 20%, 25%, and 30%. We evaluated fresh properties like workability and hardened properties such as dry density, water absorption, compressive, flexural, and split tensile strength, along with non-destructive parameters and microstructural features. The study found that substituting 20% of cement with RCP does not significantly impact mechanical properties, while higher substitutions (25% and 30%) have a slightly greater effect. Notably, 20% RCP substitution resulted in a 15–18% reduction in compressive strength over 7 to 28 days. However, it also led to a 20% decrease in CO2 emissions. A numerical analysis using nonlinear finite element analysis for flexural beam simulations further validated these results. Overall, the study promotes sustainable concrete solutions, achieving a balance between strength, environmental impact, and eco-efficiency in construction. Full article

The rapid urbanization of contemporary cities represents one of the most complex challenges of the 21st century, with profound implications for the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of territories. In this context, urban regeneration emerges as a strategic approach to territorial transformation. The complexity of urban dynamics requires the adoption of innovative paradigms and systemic approaches capable of guiding decision-making processes toward eco-sustainable and resilient solutions. This research develops advanced decision support tools for urban regeneration, using the city of Potenza (Italy) as a case study. The main objective is to identify key indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of urban regeneration interventions in advance (ex-ante). The methodology develops a composite economic-financial risk index capable of providing an accurate picture of existing conditions while adapting to the territorial specificities of the analyzed area. This index, which uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique to integrate elementary economic-financial indicators in order to assess the sustainability level of urban redevelopment projects, is able to synthesize complex economic variables into a single parameter of immediate comprehension, strategically guiding investments toward a sustainable urban development model. The analysis of results highlights a peculiar territorial configuration: semi-central areas present the greatest criticalities, while there is a progressive decrease in risk both toward the central core and toward peripheral and extra-urban areas. The study represents a significant methodological contribution to future urban regeneration initiatives at the local level, promoting an integrated vision of sustainable urban development for the benefit of current and future generations. Eco-friendly packaging for functional foods aims to reduce environmental impact while maintaining product integrity and ensuring consumer safety. Both the food industry and consumers must transition toward packaging solutions that are sustainable, biodegradable, and non-toxic. Among the key benefits of using environmentally friendly materials for functional food packaging are their sustainability, growing consumer preference, and regulatory compliance. Functional foods are products that offer health benefits beyond basic nutrition, such as enhancing immunity, improving digestion, or promoting overall well-being. This review emphasizes that the packaging of functional foods using an eco-friendly design approach is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the consumers’ preferences. It included the definition and regulatory framework of functional foods, the bioactivity and health effects of bioactive compounds/microorganisms, packaging requirements and solutions for functional foods, as well as conventional and innovative analytical techniques for bioactive compound analysis. Eco-friendly packaging for functional foods is environmentally vital for waste reduction, socially crucial for meeting conscious demand, and economically sound for driving sustainable innovation and green markets. The link between ESG and financial performance is still under debate. In this study, we explore which aspects of ESG specifically drive market valuations through both systematic and idiosyncratic risk channels. We analyze the impact of the three core ESG pillars, 10 subcategories, and associated controversies on market valuations in the energy sector. This analysis reveals that the environmental factor has a stronger impact (regression coefficient = 0.05) than the governance factor (regression coefficient = 0.003), emphasizing the need to prioritize environmental performance in ESG strategies. The positive coefficients for environmental resource use (0.005) and innovation (0.008) indicate that investments in efficiency and clean technologies are beneficial, while the negative coefficient for emissions (−0.004) underscores the risks associated with poor emissions management. These findings suggest that environmental risks currently outweigh governance risks for the energy sector, reinforcing the importance of aligning governance practices with environmental goals. To maximize ESG effectiveness, energy firms should focus on measurable improvements in resource efficiency, innovation, and emissions reduction and transparently communicate this progress to stakeholders. The evidence suggests that energy firms approach the ESG landscape differently, with sustainability leaders benefiting from higher valuations, particularly when ESG efforts are aligned with core competencies. However, many energy companies under-invest in value-creating environmental initiatives, focusing instead on emission management, which erodes value. While they excel in emission control, they lag in innovation, missing opportunities to enhance valuations. This underscores the potential for ESG risk analysis to improve portfolio performance, as sustainability can both create value and mitigate risks by factoring into valuation equations as both risks and opportunities. This study uniquely contributes to the ESG–financial performance literature by disentangling the specific ESG dimensions that drive market valuations in the energy sector, revealing that value is created not through emission control but through strategic alignment with eco-innovation, governance, and social responsibility. Assessing the ecological environmental quality (EEQ) is crucial for protecting the environment. Dhaka’s rapid, unplanned urbanization, driven by economic and social growth, poses significant eco-environmental challenges. Spatiotemporal ecological and environmental quality changes were assessed using remote sensing based ecological index (RSEI) maps derived from Landsat images (1993, 2003, 2013, and 2023). RSEI was based on four indicators—greenness (NDVI), heat index (LST), dryness (NDBSI), and wetness (LSM). Landsat 5 TM and 8 OLI/TIRS images were processed on Google Earth Engine (GEE), with principal component analysis (PCA) applied to determine RSEI. The findings showed a decline in the overall RSEI (1993–2023), with low- and very low-quality areas increasing by about 39% and high- and very high-quality areas decreasing by 24% of the total area. NDBSI and LST were negatively correlated with RSEI, except in 1993, while NDVI and LSM were generally positive but negative in 1993. The global Moran’s I (0.88–0.93) indicated strong spatial correlation in the distribution of EEQ across Dhaka. LISA cluster maps showed high-high clusters in the northeast and east, while low-low clusters were concentrated in the northwest. This research examines the degradation of ecological conditions over time in Dhaka and provides valuable insights for policymakers to address environmental issues and improve future ecological management. The study examines how design quality, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency affect customer satisfaction in eco-friendly houses in Shanghai, China. Further, it examines how environmental awareness mediates community participation and resident satisfaction. A stratified sampling technique is used to collect the data from 742 eligible respondents in public and private eco-residential complexes. The results show that design, air quality, and energy efficiency improve customer satisfaction. At the same time, community engagement partially mediates these correlations, stressing the importance of social cohesion in enhancing residential area quality. Environmental awareness moderated the effects and boosted the happiness benefits of energy efficiency and indoor air quality. This research uses a comprehensive framework that includes psychological, environmental, and social components to make it stand out. Instead of studying green housing benefits in general, it accomplishes this inside China’s urban sustainability program. The results help policymakers, urban planners, and housing authorities make megacity green housing more desirable and livable. Full article

Lack of green spaces, citizen insecurity, and crime are the primary issues afflicting the Pueblo Libre district. This research aims to propose public spaces that revalue the cultural and historical landscape of Pueblo Libre. The methodology involves a literature review, urban analysis, and climate analysis, incorporating sustainability strategies supported by digital tools (AutoCAD, Revit, and Sketch-Up). The resulting design features an ecological park with vegetation capable of capturing carbon and emitting oxygen, absorbing up to 3544.99 kg of CO2 annually. It also includes installing 26 solar-powered lights to illuminate necessary spaces efficiently and using eco-friendly materials. Additionally, the park incorporates an artificial wetland with a capacity to process 38,500 L of water using plants that remove toxic elements and capture nutrients. In conclusion, the ecological park seeks to revalue the cultural landscape and counteract environmental degradation by creating a green lung that purifies the air, fosters social connectivity, and integrates users with nature, enhancing their quality of life. Thresholds of Sustainability: Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Green Buying Behavior

This study investigates the determinants of eco-buying behavior by drawing from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and considering green consumption values and prosocial attitudes. Using a cross-sectional survey of 436 adults in the UK and employing a two-step analysis with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA), this research examines both sufficient and necessary conditions for sustainable purchasing behavior. The findings reveal that green consumption values and social influence are positively associated with green buying behavior, with green consumption values exerting the strongest influence. Conversely, prosocial attitudes and perceived behavioral control show no significant direct effects, yet age moderates the relationship between prosocial attitudes and green buying behavior. Moreover, NCA identifies green consumption values and perceived behavioral control as necessary conditions at specific thresholds, underscoring their importance in fostering high levels of green buying behavior. Additionally, a logarithmic relationship is observed between green consumption values and green buying behavior, suggesting diminishing returns at higher levels of green consumption values. Notably, the influence of green consumption values on green buying behavior is stronger among older individuals (35+), highlighting age-based differences in sustainable consumption. By integrating both sufficient and necessary conditions, this research addresses the attitude-behavior gap in sustainable consumption, offering novel insights into the roles of intrinsic values and social influences. These findings challenge established constructs like perceived behavioral control and highlight the relevance of advanced analytical methods in sustainable consumer research. The study contributes theoretical insights and practical implications for sustainable marketing strategies targeting value-driven consumers. Full article

One of the most pressing issues confronting modern society is carbon dioxide pollution (CO2). The reliance of social progress on CO2-producing technologies such as power generation, automobiles, and specialized industrial processes exacerbates the problem. Due to this reliance, it is critical to develop solutions to reduce CO2 emissions from these sources. One such solution is carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), which employs chemical methods to prevent CO2 emissions. The irreversibility of current CCS technology is its primary problem. Chitin, chitosan, and their derivatives, which were recovered from local seafood waste, are studied as reversible CO2 capture materials in this study in an effort to lessen this issue. Polysulfone (PSF) blends were employed to lessen chitosan edema, as chitosan’s hydrophilicity reduces its active sorption surface. Blends with only 20% chitosan have the same high sorption capacity as pure chitosan due to decreased swelling. Hydrolysis was used to boost the chitin sorption abilities. The CO2 sorption data were analyzed using an Intelligent Gravimetric Analyzer (IGA), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF) spectroscopy. This study reveals that shrimp shells were the best source of chitin. This research led to the creation of eco-friendly, reversible, and reusable carbon sequestration sorbents. Full article
