The prospects for long-distance space flights are becoming increasingly realistic, and one of the key factors for their implementation is the creation of sustainable systems for producing food on site. Therefore, the aim of our work is to assess the prospects for using millet in biological life support systems and to create predictive models of yield components for automating plant cultivation control. The study found that stress from hypergravity (800 g, 1200 g, 2000 g, and 3000 g) in the early stages of millet germination does not affect seedlings or yield. In a closed system, millet yield reached 0.31 kg/m2, the weight of 1000 seeds was 8.61 g, and the yield index was 0.06. The paper describes 40 quantitative traits, including six leaf and trichome traits and nine grain traits from the lower, middle and upper parts of the inflorescence. The compiled predictive regression equations allow predicting the accumulation of biomass in seedlings on the 10th and 20th days of cultivation, as well as the weight of 1000 seeds, the number of productive inflorescences, the total above-ground mass, and the number and weight of grains per plant. These equations open up opportunities for the development of computer vision and high-speed plant phenotyping programs that will allow automatic correction of the plant cultivation process and modeling of the required yield. Predicting biomass yield will also be useful in assessing the load on the waste-free processing system for plant waste at planetary stations. Full article

Congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSSs) are often associated with life-threatening systemic complications, which may be detected by identifying hypergalactosemia in newborn screening (NBS). However, diagnosing CPSS at an early stage is not easy. The purpose of this study was to predict CPSS early using screening values and general blood tests. The medical records of 153 patients with hypergalactosemia who underwent NBS in Saitama Prefecture between 1 December 1997 and 31 October 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. We provided the final diagnosis of the analyzed patients. Of the 153 patients, 44 (29%) were in the CPSS group and 83 (54%) were in the transient galactosemia group. Using the initial screening items and the six blood test items, we attempted to extract a CPSS group from the transient galactosemia group. Finally, a model for CPSS prediction was established. From multiple logistic regression analysis, filtered blood galactose-1 phosphate/galactose, serum total bile acid, and ammonia were adopted as explanatory variables for the prediction model. If the cut-off value for predicted disease probability value (P) was >0.357, CPSS was identified with 86.4% sensitivity (95%CI 72.6–94.8%) and 81.9% specificity (95%CI 72.0–89.5%). This predictive model might allow prediction of CPSS and early intervention. Full article

Machining chromium–nickel alloy steel is challenging due to its material properties, such as high strength and toughness. These properties often lead to tool damage and degradation of tool life, which overall impacts the production time, cost, and quality of the product. Therefore, it is essential to investigate early signs of tool damage to determine the effective machining conditions for chromium–nickel alloy steel, thereby increasing tool life and improving product quality. In this study, the early signs of tool wear were observed in a physical vapor deposition (PVD) carbide-coated tool (Seco Tools, Björnbacksvägen, Sweden) during the machining of X5CrNi18-10 steel under both dry and wet conditions. A finish turning operation was performed on the outer diameter (OD) of the workpiece with a 0.4 mm nose radius tool. At the early stage, the tool was examined from the functional side (f–side) and the passive side (p–side). The results indicate that dry machining leads to increased coating removal, more heat generation, and visible damage, such as pits and surface scratches. By comparison, wet machining helps reduce heat and wear, thereby improving tool life and machining quality. These findings suggest that a coolant must be used when machining chromium–nickel alloy steel with a PVD carbide-coated tool. Full article

Background: The long-term clinical and laboratory results of a 33-year follow-up of a Greek family with abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) are described. Case Report: The patients (two brothers and their sister, aged 57, 49, and 62 years, respectively) are still alive, being under close surveillance. In two of the three patients, diarrhea appeared in early infancy, while in the third, it appeared during adolescence. CNS symptomatology worsened after the second decade of life. At the same time, night blindness appeared in the advanced stages of the disease, resulting in almost complete loss of vision in one of the male patients and severe impairment in the other. The diagnosis was based on the clinical picture, ophthalmological findings, serum lipid estimations, and presence of peripheral acanthocytosis. All patients exhibited typical serum lipidemic profile, ophthalmological findings, and acanthocytes in the peripheral blood. During the follow-up period, strict dietary modifications were applied, including the substitution of fat with medium-chain triglycerides (MCT oil). After 33 years since the initial diagnosis, all patients are alive without any sign of liver dysfunction despite continuous use of MCT oil. However, symptoms from the central nervous system and vision impairment worsened. Conclusion: The course of these patients suggests that the application of a modified diet, including MCT oil, along with close surveillance, could prolong the survival of patients without significant side effects from the liver. To study the effect of cold plasma (CP) on the refrigerator shelf life of coconut water, microorganism growth and diversity and physicochemical properties were investigated. Results indicated that CP treatment did not cause significant color changes in coconut water, with turbidity remaining lower than the control even after 6 days of storage. Enzymatic activity analysis revealed reduced polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) levels in treated samples. Specifically, the 12 s CP treatment resulted in the lowest antioxidant capacity values: 15.77 Fe2+/g for ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 37.15% for DPPH radical scavenging, and 39.51% for ABTS+ radical scavenging. Microbial enumeration showed that extended CP treatment effectively inhibited the growth of total viable counts, psychrophilic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, and yeast. High-throughput sequencing identified Leuconostoc, Carnobacterium, and Lactobacillus as the dominant bacterial genera. During storage, Carnobacterium was the primary genus in the early stage, while Leuconostoc emerged as the dominant genus by the end of the storage period. In summary, CP as an effective non-thermal technology was able to maintain quality and antioxidant capacity, inhibit microbial growth, and delay the spoilage in coconut water to help extend the refrigerated shelf life of the product. Background: Faced with the profound impact of major infectious diseases on public life and economic development, humans have long sought to understand disease transmission and intervention strategies. To better explore the impact of individuals’ different coping behaviors—triggered by changes in their psychological security due to public information and external environmental changes—on the spread to infectious diseases, the model will place greater emphasis on quantifying psychological factors to make it more aligned with real-world situations. Methods: To better understand the interplay between information dissemination and disease transmission, we propose a two-layer network model that incorporates psychological safety factors. Results: Our model reveals key insights into disease transmission dynamics: (1) active defense behaviors help reduce both disease spread and information diffusion; (2) passive resistance behaviors expand disease transmission and may trigger recurrence but enhance information spread; (3) high-timeliness, low-fuzziness information reduces the peak of the initial infection but does not significantly curb overall disease spread, and the rapid dissemination of disease-related information is most effective in limiting the early stages of transmission; and (4) community structures in information networks can effectively curb the spread of infectious diseases. Conclusions: These findings offer valuable theoretical support for public health strategies and disease prevention after government information release. Full article

The movement towards low-emission and sustainable building practices has driven increased use of natural, carbon-based materials such as wood. While these materials offer significant environmental advantages, their inherent flammability introduces new challenges for timber building safety. Despite advancements in fire protection standards and building regulations, the risk of fire incidents—whether from technical failure, human error, or intentional acts—remains. The rapid detection of fire onset is crucial for safeguarding human life, animal welfare, and valuable assets. This study investigates the potential of monitoring fire precursor gases emitted inside building structures during pre-ignition and early combustion stages. The research also examines the sensitivity and effectiveness of commercial smoke detectors compared with custom sensor arrays in detecting these emissions. A representative structural sample was constructed and subjected to a controlled fire scenario in a laboratory setting, providing insights into the integration of gas sensing technologies for enhanced fire resilience in sustainable building systems. The integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes is becoming increasingly important for enhancing the environmental performance of construction projects. This scoping review examines how LCA methods and environmental data are currently integrated into BIM workflows, focusing on automation, data standardization, and visualization strategies. We selected 43 peer-reviewed studies (January 2010–May 2025) via structured searches in five major academic databases. The review identifies five main types of BIM–LCA integration workflows; the most common approach involves exporting quantity data from BIM models to external LCA tools. More recent studies explore the use of artificial intelligence for improving automation and accuracy in data mapping between BIM objects and LCA databases. Key challenges include inconsistent levels of data granularity, a lack of harmonized EPD formats, and limited interoperability between BIM and LCA software environments. Visualization methods such as color-coded 3D models are used to support early-stage decision-making, although uncertainty representation remains limited. To address these issues, future research should focus on standardizing EPD data structures, enriching BIM objects with validated environmental information, and developing explainable AI solutions for automated classification and matching. These advancements would improve the reliability and usability of LCA in BIM-based design, contributing to more informed decisions in sustainable construction. Full article

Background/Objectives: Melanoma is an aggressive type of skin cancer that poses serious health risks if not detected in its early stages. Although early diagnosis enables effective treatment, delays can result in life-threatening consequences. Traditional diagnostic processes predominantly rely on the subjective expertise of dermatologists, which can lead to variability and time inefficiencies. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for automated systems that can accurately classify melanoma lesions and retrieve visually similar cases to support clinical decision-making. Methods: This study proposes a transfer learning (TL)-based deep learning (DL) framework for the classification of melanoma images and the enhancement of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems. Pre-trained models including DenseNet121, InceptionV3, Vision Transformer (ViT), and Xception were employed to extract deep feature representations. These features were integrated using a weighted fusion strategy and classified through an Ensemble learning approach designed to capitalize on the complementary strengths of the individual models. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated using classification accuracy and mean Average Precision (mAP) metrics. Results: Experimental evaluations demonstrated that the proposed Ensemble model significantly outperformed each standalone model in both classification and retrieval tasks. The Ensemble approach achieved a classification accuracy of 95.25%. In the CBIR task, the system attained a mean Average Precision (mAP) score of 0.9538, indicating high retrieval effectiveness. The performance gains were attributed to the synergistic integration of features from diverse model architectures through the ensemble and fusion strategies. Conclusions: The findings underscore the effectiveness of TL-based DL models in automating melanoma image classification and enhancing CBIR systems. The integration of deep features from multiple pre-trained models using an Ensemble approach not only improved accuracy but also demonstrated robustness in feature generalization. This approach holds promise for integration into clinical workflows, offering improved diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in the early detection of melanoma. Full article

Anthropometry and the Risk of Breast Cancer in Moroccan Women: A Large Multicentric Case-Control Study

Although evidence suggests adiposity as a modifiable risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer (BC), its association with premenopausal BC remains uncertain. This potential differential relationship for menopausal status has been insufficiently investigated in the Moroccan population due to limited data. This study aims to assess the relationship between various indicators of adiposity and the risk of BC among Moroccan women by menopausal status. A multicenter case-control study was conducted in Morocco between December 2019 and August 2023, including 1400 incident BC cases and 1400 matched controls. Detailed measures of adiposity and self-reported measures from different life stages were collected. Unconditional logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the association between body size indicators and the risk of BC, adjusting for a range of known risk factors for BC. Higher waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) were associated with an increased risk of BC in both pre- (p-trend < 0.001 for both WC and HC) and post-menopausal women (p-trend < 0.001 for WC, 0.002 for HC). Current body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 increased the risk of postmenopausal BC (p-trend = 0.012). Among postmenopausal women, higher weight at age 20 was positively associated with BC risk (p-trend < 0.001), while, weight at age 30 was significantly associated with increased BC risk in both pre- (p-trend = 0.008) and post-menopausal women (p-trend = 0.028). Interestingly, weight gain since age 20 was inversely associated with BC risk in postmenopausal women in the adjusted model (p-trend = 0.006). Young-adult BMI observed a significant increased trend with BC risk in both pre- (p-trend = 0.008) and post-menopausal women (p-trend < 0.001). In premenopausal women, larger body shape during childhood and early adulthood was positively associated with BC risk (p-trend = 0.01 and = 0.011, respectively). In postmenopausal women, larger childhood and adolescent body silhouettes were also associated with increased BC risk (p-trend = 0.045 and 0.047, respectively). These results suggest that anthropometric factors may have different associations with pre- and post-menopausal BC among Moroccan women. This underscores the importance of conducting large prospective studies to better understand these findings and explore their links to different molecular subtypes of BC. Full article

Background/Objectives: A growing body of literature has demonstrated that living with food insecurity (FI) increases risk for mental health concerns in addition to nutritional deficits (e.g., suboptimal micronutrient consumption, excessive macronutrient consumption, malnutrition). Yet, research is needed to improve our understanding of subpopulations potentially at increased risk for mental health concerns when living in the context of FI. The current study examined psychosocial health across women of different developmental life stages all living with FI. Methods: Female clients of a large, urban food bank (N = 680) living with FI completed measures of mental health and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a cross-sectional design conducted on site at the food bank. Results: Consistent with past research, FI severity was correlated with poorer psychosocial health across all variables. A multivariate analysis of covariance compared women living with FI across 4 developmental life stages (young adult, early midlife, late midlife, and older adult; age range = 18–94 years), controlling for FI severity and race/ethnicity, on outcomes related to mental health and HRQOL. Women in early and late midlife reported higher anxiety, eating disorder symptoms, and eating-related psychosocial impairment than younger and older women. Conclusions: The mental health toll of living with FI is profound; midlife may comprise a developmental period of increased vulnerability to experience this mental health burden of living with FI for women. Thus, efforts are needed to develop innovative pathways for interventions to support the mental health of midlife women living with FI, likely involving multi-level and/or multicomponent approaches to resource access. Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent malignancy in women worldwide. Despite most cases being diagnosed in the early stages, patients typically require a multimodal treatment approach. This typically involves a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, systemic treatments (including chemotherapy or immunotherapy), targeted therapy, and endocrine therapy, depending on the disease subtype and the risk of recurrence. Moreover, patients with BC and germline mutations in the breast cancer genes 1 or 2 (BRCA1/BRCA2), (gBRCAm), who are typically young women, often require more aggressive therapeutic interventions. These mutations present unique characteristics that necessitate a distinct treatment approach, potentially influencing the side effect profiles of patients with BC. Regardless of the clear benefit observed with these treatments in terms of reduced recurrence and mortality rates, long-term, treatment-related adverse events occur that negatively affect the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of BC survivors. Thus, long-term adverse events need to be factored into the treatment decision algorithm of patients with early BC (eBC). Physical, functional, emotional, and psychosocial adverse events can occur and represent a significant concern and a challenge for clinicians, patients, and their families. This review article provides an overview of the various long-term adverse events that patients with eBC may experience, including their associated risk factors, as well as management and prevention strategies. We also explore the evidence of the long-term impact of treatment on the HRQoL of patients with gBRCAm. By providing a comprehensive overview of current evidence and recommendations regarding patients’ HRQoL, we aim to equip clinicians with scientific and clinical knowledge and provide guidance to optimize care and improve long-term outcomes. Chilling injury (CI) frequently occurs in postharvest flat peach fruit during cold storage, leading to quality deterioration and a reduced shelf life. Therefore, investigating the key factors involved in alleviating CI and developing effective preservatives are vital scientific issues for the industry. 2,4-Epibrassinolide (EBR) is a crucial endogenous hormone involved in plant response to both biological and environmental stressors. At present, most studies focus on the mechanisms of mitigating CI using a single concentration of EBR treatment, while few studies focus on the effects varying EBR concentrations have on CI. The purpose of this research is to explore the effects of varying concentrations of EBR on the postharvest quality and cold resistance of peach fruit, thereby establishing a basis for refining a technical framework of environmentally sustainable strategies to mitigate postharvest CI. The results show that EBR treatment effectively inhibits the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) by maintaining the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), thereby delaying the internal browning process of postharvest peaches. In addition, EBR treatment reduced the consumption of total phenolics by inhibiting the activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL). Experimental results identify that 5 μmol L−1 EBR treatment emerged as the most effective concentration for maintaining core postharvest quality attributes. It significantly delayed the decrease in firmness, reduced weight loss, effectively inhibited the production of H2O2 and O2·, particularly during the early storage period, strongly restrained the activity of PAL, and maintained lower rot rates and internal browning indexes. While the 15 μmol L−1 EBR treatment enhanced antioxidant activity, increased total phenolic content at certain stages, and maintained higher soluble solids and acid content, its effects on key physical quality parameters, like firmness and weight loss, were less pronounced compared to the 5 μmol L−1 treatment. Vulvar carcinoma is the fourth most common gynecological cancer, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most frequent type. Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is a precursor lesion and is strongly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This paper presents two patients in their sixth decade of life, the first diagnosed with VIN 3 (carcinoma in situ) and the second with stage IA keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. Both patients had HPV infection; immunohistochemistry confirmed HPV-dependent VIN3 in the first case, while the second patient had a pre-existing HPV high-risk 53 infection. Both patients underwent partial vulvectomy, with the second also having bilateral inguinal–femoral lymph node dissection, which showed no lymph node invasion. The first patient had a histopathological result of VIN 3 with clear margins. The second patient underwent adjuvant radiotherapy following restaging pathology. Both are showing favorable postoperative progress. Conclusions. The early diagnosis of vulvar neoplasms enables less radical but effective surgeries, balancing oncologic control with quality of life. A multidisciplinary approach is essential for adjusting treatments, improving both clinical outcomes and patient well-being. Full article

An EF1 tornado struck Nansha District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, on 28 July 2024. To explore the dynamic and thermodynamic changes during the tornado’s life cycle, high-resolution spatiotemporal data from Foshan’s X-band phased-array radar and the direct wind field synthesis algorithm were used to reconstruct the 3D wind field. The dynamics and 3D structure of the tornado were analysed, with a new parameter, vorticity volume (VV), introduced to study its variation. The observation results indicate that the tornado moved roughly from south to north. During the tornado’s early stage (00:10–00:20 UTC), arc-shaped and annular echoes emerged and positive vorticity increased (peaking at 0.042 s−1). Based on the tornado’s movement direction, the right side of the vortex centre was divergent, while the left side was convergent, whereas the vorticity area and volume continued to grow centrally. During the mature stage (00:23–00:25 UTC), the echo intensity weakened and, at 00:24, the vorticity reached its peak and touched the ground, with the vorticity area and volume also reaching their peaks at the same time. During the dissipation stage (00:25–00:30 UTC), the vorticity and echo features faded and the vorticity area and volume also declined rapidly. The analysis showed that the vorticity volume effectively reflects the tornado’s life cycle, enhancing the understanding of the dynamic and thermodynamic processes during the tornado’s development.
