The green renovation of existing residential buildings is a key way for the construction industry to achieve sustainable development and the dual carbon goals of China, which makes it urgent to make collaborative decisions among multiple stakeholders. However, because of divergent interests and risk perceptions among governments, energy service companies (ESCOs), and owners, the implementation of green renovation is hindered by numerous obstacles. In this study, we integrated prospect theory and evolutionary game theory by incorporating core prospect-theory parameters such as loss aversion and perceived value sensitivity, and developed a psychologically informed tripartite evolutionary game model. The objective was to provide a theoretical foundation and analytical framework for collaborative governance among stakeholders. Numerical simulations were conducted to validate the model’s effectiveness and explore how government regulation intensity, subsidy policies, market competition, and individual psychological factors influence the system’s evolutionary dynamics. The findings indicate that (1) government regulation and subsidy policies play central guiding roles in the early stages of green renovation, but the effectiveness has clear limitations; (2) ESCOs are most sensitive to policy incentives and market competition, and moderately increasing their risk costs can effectively deter opportunistic behavior associated with low-quality renovation; (3) owners’ willingness to participate is primarily influenced by expected returns and perceived renovation risks, while economic incentives alone have limited impact; and (4) the evolutionary outcomes are highly sensitive to parameters from prospect theory, The system’s evolutionary outcomes are highly sensitive to prospect theory parameters. High levels of loss aversion (λ) and loss sensitivity (β) tend to drive the system into a suboptimal equilibrium characterized by insufficient demand, while high gain sensitivity (α) serves as a key driving force for the system’s evolution toward the ideal equilibrium. This study offers theoretical support for optimizing green renovation policies for existing residential buildings in China and provides practical recommendations for improving market competition mechanisms, thereby promoting the healthy development of the green renovation market. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented economic disruptions, raising critical questions about the resilience and adaptability of macroeconomic productivity across countries. This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on macroeconomic efficiency and productivity dynamics in 37 OECD countries using quarterly data from 2018Q1 to 2024Q4. By employing a Slack-Based Measure Data Envelopment Analysis (SBM-DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI), we decompose total factor productivity (TFP) into efficiency change (EC) and technological change (TC) across three periods: pre-pandemic, during-pandemic, and post-pandemic. Our framework incorporates both desirable (GDP) and undesirable outputs (inflation, unemployment, housing price inflation, and interest rate distortions), offering a multidimensional view of macroeconomic efficiency. Results show broad but uneven productivity gains, with technological progress proving more resilient than efficiency during the pandemic. Post-COVID recovery trajectories diverged, reflecting differences in structural adaptability and innovation capacity. Regression analysis reveals that stringent lockdowns in 2020 were associated with lower productivity in 2023–2024, while more adaptive policies in 2021 supported long-term technological gains. These findings highlight the importance of aligning crisis response with forward-looking economic strategies and demonstrate the value of DEA-based methods for evaluating macroeconomic performance beyond GDP. Despite decades of intense interest and investment in cognitive science, there remains a not only incomplete but also highly inconsistent body of evidence regarding how adult brains recover from even the most focal injuries associated with stroke. In this paper, I provide a broad narrative review of the studies of post-stroke aphasia recovery that have sought to identify the mechanisms of language recovery through longitudinal functional imaging. I start with studies that used functional imaging in groups of neurotypical individuals that have revealed areas of the brain that are reliably activated by language tasks and are functionally connected, referred to here as the “language network.” I then review group studies in which functional imaging data were averaged across groups of people with post-stroke aphasia to characterize the neurobiology of recovery. These group studies of post-stroke aphasia have yielded very different results and have led to conflicting conclusions. Subsequently, I examine results of studies of single subjects that have employed longitudinal functional imaging to identify mechanisms of language recovery. Together, these single subject studies make it clear that mechanisms of neural recovery are far from uniform, even in people with very similar lesions and time since stroke. On this basis, I argue that it is not justifiable to average functional imaging data across individuals with post-stroke aphasia to draw meaningful insights into how brain networks change to support language recovery. Each individual’s brain networks change over time, but in divergent ways that depend on the extent of disruption to the normal language network, interventions to facilitate recovery, the health of the intact brain, and other variables yet to be identified. While averaging results across participants with post-stroke aphasia might be able to identify certain changes in the networks that are correlated with specific language gains, uncovering the range of mechanisms and dynamics of language recovery after stroke requires longitudinal imaging of individuals. Semantic communication has attracted considerable interest due to its potential to support emerging human-centric services, such as holographic communications, extended reality (XR), and human-machine interactions. Different from traditional communication systems that focus on minimizing the symbol-level distortion (e.g., bit error rate, signal-to-noise ratio, etc.), semantic communication targets at delivering the intended meaning at the destination user which is often quantified by various statistical divergences, often referred to as the semantic distances. Currently, there still lacks a unified framework to quantify the rate-distortion tradeoff for semantic communication with different task-specific semantic distance measures. To tackle this problem, we propose the task-specific rate-distortion theory for semantic communication where different task-specific statistic divergence metrics can be considered. To investigate the impact of different semantic distance measures on the achievable rate, we consider two popular tasks, classification and signal generation. We present the closed-form expressions of the semantic rate-distortion functions for these two different tasks and compare their performance under various scenarios. Extensive experimental results are presented to verify our theoretical results. Full article

Expatriates and missionaries in China played a significant role in the development and transformation of Chinese architecture in the Late Qing period. However, a systematic comparison of their discourses and proposals on Chinese architecture has been hindered by a lack of historical literature and the complexities of fragmented data and methodologies. This article examines and compares the two most influential non-native newspapers: The North-China Daily News in English, edited by expatriates, and The Review of the Times in Chinese, founded by missionaries. By analyzing these two groups’ discourses and narratives on Chinese architecture, the study explores their similarities and distinctions, revealing the characteristics, strategies, attitudes, interests, and opinions of expatriates, missionaries, and non-missionaries in China on the transmission and transformation of architecture knowledge. The research highlights differences in their preferences for specific text types, subjects, and themes on Chinese architecture, as well as their attitudes toward native and foreign architecture, professional education, and architecture regulations in individual and official spheres. Despite these differences, overlapping characteristics and proposals existed among the three groups. The study further investigates the underlying reasons and mechanisms for their similar or divergent mindsets and behavioral patterns, drawing on human responsive psychology rather than relying on postcolonial or cultural theories. The real estate market significantly influences individual lives, corporate decisions, and national economic sustainability. Therefore, constructing a data-driven, interpretable real estate market prediction model is essential. It can clarify each factor’s role in housing prices and transactions, offering a scientific basis for market regulation and enterprise investment decisions. This study comprehensively measures the evolution trends of the real estate markets in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, China, from 2003 to 2022 through three dimensions. Then, various machine learning methods and interpretability methods like SHAP values are used to explore the impact of supply, demand, policies, and expectations on the real estate market of China’s first-tier cities. The results reveal the following: (1) In terms of commercial housing sales area, adequate housing supply, robust medical services, and high population density boost the sales area, while demand for small units reflects buyers’ balance between affordability and education. (2) In terms of commercial housing average sales price, growth is driven by education investment, population density, and income, with loan interest rates serving as a stabilizing tool. (3) In terms of commercial housing sales amount, educational expenditure, general public budget expenditure, and real estate development investment amount drive revenue, while the five-year loan benchmark interest rate is the primary inhibitory factor. These findings highlight the divergent impacts of supply, demand, policy, and expectation factors across different market dimensions, offering critical insights for enterprise investment strategies. Adaptive radiations are characterized by increases in rates of lineage and trait evolution, typically due to the opening of new ecological opportunities such as may follow from dispersal to a new region or the evolution of a trait that allows exploitation of new niches. This results in clades that have accumulated unusually high biological diversity within a relatively short evolutionary timespan and hence the phenomenon has attracted longstanding interest amongst evolutionary biologists. Natricidae is a family of snakes with a primarily Old World distribution but which have colonized the New World on a single occasion. This dispersal event coincides with an increased speciation rate that has led to a species-rich New World clade. Herein, we take a phylogenetic comparative approach to investigate a likely adaptive radiation of New World natricids. We first confirmed previously reported findings of a single origin (providing new ecological opportunity) coinciding with a burst of lineage diversification. We then estimate the rates of evolution for three ecologically important traits (body size and broad categories of diet and habitat) separately for New World and Old World natricids. Of these three traits, our results provide evidence that only transition rates between terrestrial and (semi-)aquatic habitats are higher in the New World clade. Taken together, this supports a scenario of an adaptive radiation in natricids primarily associated with differentiation by habitat as the clade spread across the New World following its arrival there. Considering other adaptive radiations alongside our evidence for Natricidae, we propose the hypothesis that there is a common distinction between spatially constrained ‘island’ adaptive radiations (which often diverge along trophic axes) and continental adaptive radiations, which diverge as the clade spreads across a larger spatial scale and adapts to different habitats. As an important part of green building, green housing (GH) has become a strategic priority in many countries. However, the market share of GH remains limited due to conflicting interests and divergent strategic choices among stakeholders. To address this challenge, various low-carbon policy tools, such as financial subsidies (FS), carbon taxes (CT), and carbon emissions trading (CET), have been introduced. Despite these efforts, the influence of low-carbon policies on stakeholders’ strategies remains inadequately understood. This study aims to bridge this research gap by constructing an evolutionary game model that incorporates the government, developers, and consumers while considering relevant policy factors. The model identifies evolutionary stable strategies (ESS) for each stakeholder. Then, based on MATLAB 2021b, several simulations are carried out for initial, development, mature, and stable stage. The simulation results show the dynamic changes in stakeholder behavior over time. This study also analyzes how key parameters affect the system’s evolution and puts forward suggestions from each stakeholder’s perspective. The results show that (1) consumer subsidies are more effective than those for developers. (2) Subsidies for developers cause more significant financial pressure on governments than subsidies for consumers. (3) The CET policy helps developers adopt GH more quickly. (4) Proper CT promotes developers to make greener choices. (5) Reducing the difference between green and traditional housing supports the stable development of the GHM. This study offers theoretical insights to guide stakeholder decision-making and provides practical recommendations for government aiming to play a role in fostering GHM development. Full article

Background/Objectives: Major Depression (MD) is a common disorder that has significant social and economic impacts. Approximately 30% of all MD patients are refractory to common treatments, representing a major obstacle to managing the impacts of depression. One potential explanation for the incomplete treatment efficacy in MD is a substantial divergence in the mechanisms and brain networks involved in different subtypes of the disorder. The aim of this study was to identify novel brain regional targets for MD clinical screening using a gene-informed approach. Methods: A new analysis pipeline, called “Analysis Tool for Local Association of Neuronal Transcript Expression” (ATLANTE), was generated and validated. The pipeline identifies brain regions based on the shared high expression of user-generated gene lists; in this study, the pipeline was applied to discover brain regions that may be significant to MD. Results: Nine discrete brain regions of interest to MD were identified, including the temporal pole, anterior transverse temporal gyrus (Heschl’s gyrus), olfactory tubercle, ventral tegmental area, postcentral gyrus, CA1 of the hippocampus, olfactory area, perirhinal gyrus, and posterior insular cortex. The application of network and clustering analyses identified genes of special importance, including, most notably, PRKN. Conclusions: This study provides two major insights. The first is that several brain regions have unique MD-associated genetic architectures, indicating a potential explanation for subtype-specific dysfunction. The second insight is that the PRKN gene, which is strongly associated with Parkinson’s disease, is a key player amongst the MD-associated genes. These findings reveal novel targets for the clinical screening of depression and reinforce a mechanistic connection between MD and Parkinson’s disease. Full article

The awareness of global warming has boosted research on methods to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Livestock buildings, although essential for food production, represent a sustainability challenge due to their high maintenance energy costs, GHG emissions, and impact on the environment and rural landscapes. Since the environment, cultural heritage, and community identity deserve protection, research trends and current knowledge on livestock buildings, building sustainability, energy efficiency strategies, and landscape management were investigated using the Web of Science and Scopus search tools (2005–2025). Research on these topics was found to be uneven, with limited focus on livestock buildings compared to food production and animal welfare, and significant interest in eco-sustainable building materials. A total of 96 articles were selected after evaluating over 5400 records. The analysis revealed a lack of universally accepted definitions for building design strategies and their rare application to livestock facilities, where passive solutions and insulation prevailed. The application of renewable energy was rare and limited to rural buildings, as was the application of sustainable building materials to livestock, agriculture, and vernacular buildings. Conversely, increased attention was paid to the definition and classification of vernacular architecture features aimed at enhancing existing buildings and mitigating or facilitating the landscape integration of those that diverge most from them. Although not exhaustive, this review identified some knowledge gaps. More efforts are needed to reduce environmental impacts and meet the milestones set by international agreements. Research on building materials could benefit from collaboration with experts in cultural heritage conservation because of their command of traditional materials, durability-enhancing methods, and biodeterioration. This numerical study addressed the multi-objective optimization of a rocket-type Pulse Detonation Engine nozzle. The Pulse Detonation Engine consisted of a constant length, constant diameter cylindrical section plus a nozzle that could be either convergent, divergent, or convergent–divergent. The space of five design variables contained: equivalence ratio of the H2-Air mixture, convergent contraction ratio, divergent expansion ratio, dimensionless nozzle length, and convergent to divergent length ratio. The unsteady Euler-type numerical solver was quasi-one-dimensional with variable cross-sectional area. Chemistry was simulated by means of a one-step global reaction. The solver was used to generate three coarse five-dimensional data tensors that contained: specific impulse based on fuel, total impulse, and nozzle surface area, for each configuration. The tensors were decomposed using the High Order singular Value Decomposition technique. The eigenvectors of the decompositions were used to generate continuous descriptions of the data tensors. A genetic algorithm plus a Gradient Method optimization algorithm acted on the densified data tensors. Five different objective functions were considered that involved specific impulse based on fuel, total impulse, and nozzle surface area either separately or in doublets/triplets. The results obtained were discussed, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in terms of the different objective functions. Design guidelines were provided that could be of interest in the growing area of Pulse Detonation Engine engineering applications. Full article

As the largest carbon emitter globally, China has formally adopted dual-carbon targets of achieving a carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Urban renewal, as an essential approach to promoting sustainable urban development, plays a critical role in realizing dual-carbon targets. However, carbon emission reduction in urban renewal involves multiple stakeholders with divergent interests, significantly hindering the effective achievement of emission reduction goals. In this context, this paper innovatively selects the government, developers, and construction enterprises as game subjects and constructs an evolutionary game model of the three parties’ participation in carbon emission reduction from the perspective of carbon trading. Through simulation analysis, it explores the impacts of government subsidies, penalty mechanisms, additional benefits, and carbon trading on stakeholder decision-making. The findings indicate the following: (1) The emission reduction process in urban renewal follows an evolutionary pattern of the initial, growth, and mature stages. (2) Sensitivity analysis demonstrates that government subsidies and penalty mechanisms play important roles. (3) Additional benefits serve as intrinsic motivation for developers and construction enterprises to reduce emissions, while a well-developed carbon trading market provides additional incentives and benefit pathways for stakeholders. By integrating urban renewal with carbon trading for the first time, this study aims to enhance stakeholders’ engagement in emission reduction and provide practical reference suggestions, thereby contributing to sustainable urban development. Canine circovirus (CanineCV) is an emerging virus of interest in both domestic and wild carnivores that is scarcely reported in southeastern Europe. This study examined the presence, genetic diversity, and evolutionary characteristics of CanineCV in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and golden jackals (Canis aureus) from northwestern Serbia, a region marked by expanding mesopredator populations overlapping with human habitats. Out of 98 sampled animals, circoviral DNA was detected in 31.6%. Jackals were mostly positive for CanineCV genotype 4, while genotype 5, associated with wild carnivores, was dominant in foxes. Mixed genotype 4/genotype 5 infections were only found in jackals. Phylogenetic and haplotype analyses indicated that most jackal-derived CanineCV strains clustered along sequences from Europe, Africa, and the Americas, while genotype 5 sequences grouped separately from other genotype representatives. A recombinant strain was identified as a divergent lineage, and several sequences showed evidence of recombination between Rep and Cap genes. Despite Cap protein amino acid differences, purifying selection dominated, suggesting functional constraints on viral evolution. The results indicate that jackals may act as recombination hotspots and bridging hosts between viral lineages. This study provides insight into the molecular epidemiology of CanineCV in the Balkans, highlighting the importance of ongoing surveillance. Full article

The microorganisms of mariculture sediments are key to regulating and maintaining their ecosystem balance and have garnered research interest. Although the microbial composition and functional potential of mariculture sediments have been extensively explored in the past, the effects of long-term aquaculture on microbial communities and functional genes have been scarcely studied. Sediment samples from mariculture ponds with durations of 1 year, 6 years, and 10 years were collected in this study. A high-throughput metagenomic analysis was then conducted. The results showed that the sediments fermented for 1 year had the highest α-diversity, creating conditions for the divergence of functional microbial communities. Due to nutrient competition, long-term fermentation led to a decrease in both diversity and functional redundancy. Key functional groups exhibited different temporal succession patterns. In addition, long-term fermentation, especially fermentation over 10 years, resulted in significant differentiation of functional genes, particularly those related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism. This study reveals the distribution pattern of the microbiome during the natural fermentation process and its temporal coupling relationship with the functions of the pond ecosystem. It clarifies the dynamic evolution of functional genes, providing a theoretical basis for the sustainable management of mariculture. Full article

Rethinking Tax Systems: How Heterogeneous Tax Mix Shapes Income Inequality in European OECD Economies

Divergences in tax policies are evident among European OECD economies, due to varying priorities of efficiency vs. equity, influenced by the forms of direct vs. indirect taxation. The special interest of this paper is to identify how different tax forms (direct—corporate and personal income taxes (CIT, PIT); and indirect—value added tax (VAT)) affect inequality in European OECD economies in the period 2003–2020. Using heterogeneous non-stationary panel models and the (Pooled) Mean Group (PMG/MG) methods of estimation, a long-run negative relationship between direct tax forms (CIT, PIT) and the Gini coefficient was discovered, meaning that utilizing progressive direct tax forms resulted in more equity. The error-correction terms are heterogeneous, showing that developed economies decrease income inequality by using direct taxes more efficiently than emerging European OECD economies. The short-run statistically significant relationships between VAT and the Gini coefficient are discovered, meaning that certain European OECD economies effectively use VAT revenue to achieve greater equity in society. This study demonstrates that the use of indirect tax forms may be beneficial in terms of collecting more tax revenues, and that using them for redistributive programs can reduce inequality while maintaining economic efficiency.
